Summary Chapter 39

Emma enjoyed her conversation with Mr. Knightley. She is glad that his opinion of the Eltons is low and his favor of Harriet is higher.

Harriet seems to be cured of her infatuation for Mr. Elton.

The next day, Emma sees Frank Churchill holding a shaken Harriet, who soon faints. Harriet had been attacked by a bunch of gypsies. Frank had come along and rescued her.

Emma decides there are forces drawing Frank and Harriet together, but she vows not to interfere.

The gypsies run off before law enforcement catches them. Mr. Woodhouse is upset by the tale.
