They start digging that night. They don’t make much progress. Tom realizes it is going too slow. He decides to use picks, but if anyone asks, they’ll say they used case knives. Huck himself says he doesn’t care about doing things properly. He wants to do things that get results. They make more progress with picks.
They break in the next night. Jim says Silas and Sally have been kind to him. Tom tells Jim what he is supposed to do with the rope ladder and shirt. Jim doesn’t understand why it is necessary, but he goes along with it.
The next day, Tom promises to make Nat (the servant who guards Jim) a witch pie to protect him. However, this is just a ruse to sneak a rope ladder to Jim.
