Should you give money to charities that promote a religious view that you don’t agree with?
Isagel
07-26-2004, 06:53 AM
I do not know if I want to say that you should not do it. I probably would not, though. I think it is important to know what the money is used for, and that it´s my responsibility to try and find out what I´m supporting. There are alot of nonreligious charities.

What will the next trend in art be? (more realistic/more abstract? portraits/still life? ... )
Kiwi Shelf

Do you think proper use of interpunction is important?
Monica
08-21-2004, 01:29 PM
interpunction is very important. it allows the writer to express his/her emotions, thoughts etc. if used improperly it can be misleading. we had this example on our english classes:
"Panda - eats, shoots and leaves." :)
what is your favourite name? does a name influence our character?
poehee99
08-22-2004, 07:01 AM
depends on what name you have, really. That's probably a strange answer but what I mean is that people who have christian names usually get a name which has a meaning. In that way there are names that are favourite over others but that's just because of the meaning of the name. I don't think a name can influence our character, because I believe a character is built in the flow of life (?) sorry i only have the dutch quotation here and I can't find the original one. it's a quote by Goethe.
What i mean is that you become someone in life. in my oppinion you are not born with a "completed" character.

What book most depressed you?
poehee99
08-23-2004, 08:18 AM
well I am a fan of books of conspiracy theories so those sometimes depress me when I think that some could actually be true. but a book I just read depressed me most. It's called The Bible code by Michael Drosnin. The book claims that all events in the past, present and future can be read in the original(?) text of the bible. There is a special computer program that searches for certain combinations in the text. I must say that i don't believe in destiny as such that you don't have any influence over your future and that everything you do has been set up. But the thing is: the computerprogram has filtered events as the murder of jfk, the rise of hitler, the murder of rabin, earthquake's and other stuff with the right names of the murderers or the right dates, so that's scarry and then when I read that the biblecode expects a nuclear war in 2006 it depressed me, for what if it's right?
poehee99
08-23-2004, 08:23 AM
FYI: Michael Drosnin is, or has been, a journalist for Washington post and Wall street journal. His book is a research into the phenomenon of the code, not a religious text trying to glorify or justify the bible.

You mean like in Back to the Future II, when he takes back the sports results for the next sixty years? Well, I'll start with that (for the next 19 years, that is). And how about stock quotes too, while I'm at it (I know these aren't physical, but information pays the most). Then the next few major advancements in computer technology after 1985...I'm running out of ideas here, I'm not that creative. A cell phone, just so they can skip the whole boxy-looking phase and go straight to small and sleek. I'm trying to get off the technology track and think of maybe a pop culture item that would fetch a good price in 1985, but I wasn't actually alive then. Somebody else help with the last two?
But I do want to ask a question: I am very curious to know, are you ticklish?

Hey, what about a question?
I'm extremely ticklish too, which kind of bothered me, because I always thought that my husband wasn't so I had to resort to pinching to defend myself. It took a year and a half, but I figured it out, so I can save him from getting bruises all over his arms
Do you torture yourself by taking on too much work?
Isagel
08-26-2004, 09:34 AM
Oh, yes.
I´m working on not doing that. But it´s really hard!
Do you exercise - and how?
Hmm, that's a point of controversy in my house. My husband used to do triatholons and always says how much we need to go running together. But everytime we do, he goes too fast and I get frustrated and don't want to go again. But I find if I go by myself at my own pace, I'm okay. So, I guess, when I have the time, I run. (He hasn't done a race in a long time anyway, so he can't really talk!)

how is it we have so few coping skills in western civ?
atiguhya padma
09-09-2004, 11:28 AM
In Western European countries like Spain and Italy, there is still a very strong family setup, so that in times of crisis, the family all pull together and help out. In the UK, this was really eroded away when the populace began to migrate from rural to urban areas, during the Ind. Rev. In the US, a mobile workforce, long work hours, wage inequality, and other economic factors tend to mean that family cohesion is difficult, and as a result there is far more marriage breakdown, child abuse and street crime than might be expected in other Western areas. So my answer to your question is: it is not really like that all over Western civilization, and where it is, the best that can be done is to change those factors that dissolve the family setup (political rhetoric and tough crime legislation is not the answer IMO)

This guy, we'll call him "Jeff" at work complained that he thought his cubicle was getting smaller (which it wasn't). So we decided to make it smaller, every couple of days we would inch the cubicle walls closer together, we made up a calender and sold days for a dollar and whichever day Jeff noticed - that person would win the money. Jeff is notorious for being oblivious to his surroundings at one point he leaned back in his chair and hit his head on the file cabinet half the people in the room had to leave as not to laugh in his face. Anyways we had to give the guy the money because he made though the whole calender without noticing. The last day he was on the phone and a couple people got on either side of his file cabinets and pushed them so the file cabinets blocked him in his cube then we gave him the money and told him the whole story.

Why are some mobile phone ringtones called "polyphonic" ringtones, when they are obviously not?
Miss Darcy
02-22-2005, 04:40 AM
But they are, they "consist of more than one line of sound", which is the (musical) meaning of polyphony. Or
"Music with two or more independent melodic parts sounded together."
Well that would be stretching it a little but the "more than one line", which is written in my musical reference book (not sure which one but one of them)...
So they're polyphonic as opposed to monophonic, which is (dull, dreary, monotonous) with only ONE line of sound.

To those beneath, does the world apear differently to different people?
Yes, most definitely. A plethora of philosophies that an average person theorizes, in my opinion, suggests ideas of multiple means to one end, differences in morals/ethics, and even in Berkelian, Cartesian, Kantian, and Locke-based existential meditations: "the perception of reality is subjective."
Or, if you only ask of "seeing" the world differently, yes, especially, as some people require vision aides (i.e. glasses, contact lenses) to perceive equally what another sees. ;)
