Would you take the time to educate yourself about Bi Polar/Manic Depressive Disorder in order to help understand someone who is going through this or just shun the person as if they were rabid?
LadyWentworth
10-22-2007, 12:43 AM
If the person is close to me, I definitely would like to try and understand what the person is going through. I have a family member that is what they called a "textbook case" with OCD. I definitely found out more about it and got to understand it better. How else would I be able to completely understand the person I am dealing with on a daily basis? So, of course I would.
Why would someone shun a person for such a reason as the above question?
Oniw17
10-22-2007, 03:34 AM
They are easily stressed like most people. This is probably because they weren't disciplied enough as a child.
Why does everyone insist that life is crazy when I see nothing that I haven't come to expect and anticipate in my daily life?

I'm only 47. How would I know?
Why do people blame everything on how a kid was disiplined? If partents try to displine kids, people complain that they are "wrecking their creativity." If they do not they are "raising the next generation of psychos." If you try the middle road, you are "to wishy-washy to have kids." Give me a break! http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l108/AbsalomKane/Smilies/Grr.gif
packersfan
10-22-2007, 07:54 PM
Most people like to blame things on their parents, either by their disipline or lack or disipline. Then they can relate to others and therefore like to blame all parents for all kids "imperfections". Does that make sense?
Do you think parents should disipline their children or not or somewhat in the middle?
BulletproofDork
10-22-2007, 08:01 PM
They should definitely disipline their children, but to a certain age, me thinks. I'm only twelve, and my parents spanked me when I was younger, but now a stern reprimand hurts just as much.
Same question.
Oniw17
10-22-2007, 08:28 PM
Not disciplining children?! That's crazy! Everyone should discipline their kids(I don't only mean spanking, the corner is incredibly effective)...When they don't, they usually end up claiming that the reason their kids keep getting suspended from school is because they have ADHD and getting them medicated later(I've seen this more than once). Of course, there should be a difference between the way you discipline a 5 year old and an 8 year old, and if your kid has no mental problems, they shouldn't need to be disciplined after they're 10(If they were raised right). It doesn't stunt individualism in the least bit(I'm the weirdest and most abnormal person I know and I was disciplined when I was young).
Same question.---
Shalot
10-22-2007, 09:00 PM
yes parents should discipline their kids. this questions reminds me of the stories in the media about Alec Baldwin's voicemail he left to his daughter. She had done something and he was upset with her for it and he left her a voice mail about it. The media got a hold of it and were talking about his parenting skills...
I was thinking (and I don't even have kids) that the kid probably deserved it. All he did was yell at her. It's not like he beat her with a shovel. If parents can't teach their children right and wrong through discipline, then who will? It certainly won't be the teachers at school, because all they want to do is defile the poor kids.
I was listening to This American Life (yes another NPR program - NPR Rules!) and that week it was about kids and discipline and the narrator said something along the lines of "Kids are sociopaths until they are disciplined out of it"
That is not a direct quote because I can't remember exactly what he said, but it's true. Kids need to be taught effectively how to function in society and they need to be called down when they do something inappropriate. You can't just call it ADD or accuse their parents of mistreatment. I guess some people have different ideas about what is inappropriate discipline.
Me personally, I think some kids just needs spankings.
Do you remember getting disciplined and/or spanked for something and how does that make you feel?
Shurtugal
10-22-2007, 09:09 PM
i've been spanked... well when i did get spanked i didn't like it. but i've looked around and seen what some people turn out to be. and i know what i could have turned out to be. so now i am thankful.

Why can't we put place more importance on both and less on mediocracy and conformity(that's my answer and my question)?
Bakiryu
10-23-2007, 11:16 PM
we're human beings, that means low intelligence and too much conformity.

When it comes to grades, believe it or not, I am sometimes passive towards that, and I end up hating myself for feeling that way.
How would you react if you were stuck in the same situation as I?
Pendragon
10-26-2007, 10:33 AM
Well, I used to be fairly passive myself-- after all, I had to work my way through high school and then walk two miles home in all sorts of weather, no bookbag, so taking my books home was out. When I returned to school in an attemp to get off disability, even though I had been out of school 20 years, I decided a B was unacceptable. Mainly, I grant you, because I knew people didn't think I could do it. I did. Unfortunately, the job pressure just sent me back into worse times. I think it a phase we go through.
Would you set a goal like "A "B" is an unacceptable grade?"
Oniw17
10-26-2007, 10:13 PM
More like "not knowing x or being able to solve x problem is unacceptable", or "x person being better than me in any way whatsoever is unacceptable" or "not being able to complete x task is something I have to change." My main goal is to continue to surpress social anxiety, and sadly, that will be my no.1 goal, probably until I die.

why can some people read in the car and others get car sick if they read in the car and why does Sprite but not Sierra Mist help with naseau?
AdoreroDio
10-28-2007, 11:54 PM
I 'm not sure about the reading in the car thing- it's not something passed on for sure, I mean my mom and brother get sick is they do but I don't. Maybe it has something to do with childhood- if you were always sturdy and not used to movement a lot then ,maybe you do get sick but if you were used to swaying or not being sturdy than you subconsciously are already used to being focused around movement and not getting sick. but then again that is a theory I just made up so it prolly has a lot of errors. Who really knows?
As for the Sprite and Sierra Mist , no idea. Pick a bottle of each up and compare the ingredients, what's the difference?
What was your favorite year of school and why?

When feeling melancholy, what music do you listen to?
AimusSage
11-01-2007, 04:03 PM
Classical music, Mozart's requiem for one is very good and puts the whole melancholy in perspective.
I also have some great movie soundtracks.
Radiohead
Pink Floyd always manages to lift my spirits.
Muse.
So much more though, just the tip of the iceberg.
What is it that makes people feel melancholy?
Chava

I'm melancholic when i'm confused or really tired, because then I can't think positive.

Chava! It's an all ages forum! :eek2: ;)
And playing football also pleases me. As does a good concert by a good band, quite a lot pleases me actually. But it's all derived from selfish interest, which displeases me, so I think it all balances out in the end. :D

well someone has to tell call him on his lying. I would probably try to come up with some other creative way to get him to stop that didn't involve him getting upset and cutting off all contact. Just because it's good for him, and just because he may get mad and even though he may appreciate it later, his pride or embarrassment may keep him from speaking to you at all later.

At least once, maybe more. My brother would have bled to death if I hadn't carried him down the hill on the run, got him in the car after grabbing the insurence card from mom, and broke every driving law in the book getting him to the hospital. He had ripped an artery in his knee.
I stepped between a man and another who was threatening to kill him once in a mental hospital. The guy could bench press nearly 400 lb. so I knew he could kill us both with bare hands. I could read death in his eyes. He had had the back of his skull crushed in an accident as a kid, and he had a tendency to go violent without warning. He backed down out of respect for me, but stated that if the bleep-of-a-bleep crossed him again, nobody would stop him from killing him. This got him locked in the rubber room.
No bragging, any other person would have done the same, I'm sure.
