boy that's a toughie!

I love classic rock, but im a huge fan of the melancholy celtic music too. I love today's country music---the country sound and sentiments mixed with pop/rock (heard the new song by reba yet?). I also love the alternative rock type stuff (am listening to oasis right now). sooooooooo much good stuff!

im looking forward to the nap im just about to take, an old friend coming into town soon to spend a few weeks, and for the story/action in the book im reading (the girl with the dragon tattoo) to pick it up a little bit!

I really don't like it when people ask how are you because it is a pointless disingenuous question. You are not going to really tell them how you are and they don't really want to know. Also I don't like it when you are sitting in some public setting and someone asks "Can I sit there?" Of course you cannot actually stop them even if you said no they could still sit there.

10-14-2015, 03:08 PM
just a handful of days ago I finished the last book in the twilight series, breaking dawn, and over the past handful of months, ive seen the movies too.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and though there is nothing necessarily outstanding in the writing itself, I think the author did a great job in the story line. ive mentioned this elsewhere, the tension she creates by the mixing of the characters in her new world, was absolutely wonderful. and the resolutions are very well thought out.

the series is so much more than a romance and it deals with timeless issues I think so many of us find attractive in literature. ive become a fan.

theres a scene right at the very end of the first movie that has become one of my all time favorite movie scenes.

you know an interesting aspect of your question muse---i like the james fenimore cooper leatherstocking books, and the order of publication of the books is different than the chronologies of the stories themselves.

Tyrion Cheddar
10-14-2015, 04:45 PM
Self-examination, or self-recrimination, or self-destruction, take your pick. The book I'm thinking of is Steppenwolf and the character Harry Haller, the protagonist. It is a story of a man out of time, in that he is the product of an older world, one that is swiftly passing out of being, and being replaced by a wholly strange (to him) and repugnant new one. In addition, Haller is nearing the end of his life, and worn out by a lifetime of his own internal struggles, and a great loss. The story can be seen as epitaph, suicide note, and, as was author Hermann Hesse's wont, an inward journey to revelation and self-discovery. This is a book to put at the top of anyone's reading list.

When the Oculus Rift comes out next year, which will appear first: software enabling you to take a complete virtual journey through the Metropolitan Museum of Art, standing in front of some of the world's greatest paintings, sculptures and tapestries as if you were physically there, or Disney's Virtual Hannah Montana Experience?

tyrion, "Steppenwolf" was recently the answer to a final jeopardy question and the answer was such that it was clear the book was very praiseworthy. I have the book, maybe when I finish the one im on now (ender's game), i'll give it a shot. i like what you've described.

as I cant really see parents buying it for their 14 yr old girls, im going to have to go with more adult and redeeming, so sure, the metropolitan museum of art. although im leaning towards something, whatever it is, more dynamic and interactive.

I imagine though, if the marketers are smart, the initial product will come with a package that's pretty broad and inclusive.

muse do you mean that from the perspective of that you wanted vampires to remain in the realm of "dark" and/or "evil?"

troyia--I came late to the twilight phenomenon and have become a big fan.

im going to put forth one of my all time favorite books as the most obscure only because its relatively old (1857) and I think that even most people who are into literature have never heard of it, much less read it. tom brown's schooldays by Thomas hughes.

what widely acclaimed/well-praised famous book did you loathe?

Dark Muse
11-11-2015, 10:16 PM
muse do you mean that from the perspective of that you wanted vampires to remain in the realm of "dark" and/or "evil?"

That is part of it, my vampires don't necessarily always have to be pure evil but still I like them to be on the darker side. But also I don't like how mainstream and cliche the Twilight popularity made vampires. They have become too conventional.

Kind of like what Pirates of the Caribbean movies did to pirates (though I admit I loved those movies) I was annoyed with seeing skull and cross bones everywhere and everyone wearing them.

That is a tough one loathe is a strong word but the first one that comes to mind when I saw the question was Lolita. I don't know if I would really go as far to say I loathed the book, but I don't quite get what everyone loves so much about it or sees in it. It seemed like the sort of think I should like, but really the narrative style just didn't do anything for me and there were moments when I just found the story boring.

What is the longest book you have read?

hmm, not that im necessarily trying to talk you into giving the series a chance muse, but, with little exception (the cullens and their "cousins") the rest of the vampires in the story are all kinds of dark.

I particularly liked the romance between the two main characters and the tensions they had to face and resolve given their very different worlds. I went into it a bit reluctantly and found myself, despite myself, liking Edward. I thought, I cant do this, im supposed to hate vampires!

I wonder if Lolita is overrated? it might be easy for me to say because im not literarily formally educated, but I wonder if so much of the appeal is just the taboo of the story itself?

for my part, I hated moby dick, and a catcher in the rye.

I answered that question before and I think I might have overestimated my answer---the internet's telling me that tom Clancy's sum of all fears is 928 pages...maybe it just felt like it was 1100! laughs...

do you sing along and/or sometimes dance to music that's playing when no one's around?

I hate to sound consistently contradictory but I am not much one for romances and YA romances I tend to find particularly nauseating. I think my biased against the book is too strong for me to overcome if I did try and read it. When I first heard about it because of my love for vampires I was interested, but than I heard about it to death, and Twilight fans ruined my blog (That is a whole other story).

Catcher in the Rye is one of my personal favorite but a lot of people cannot stand it. Moby Dick I liked way more than I had ever thought I would.

The Mummy I also really liked a lot. With the whole zombie thing mummies are really kind of out these days (and I know her book was written before the zombie boom) but I really like it when people do new stuff with mummies and she always has such an original take on legendary monsters.

hidden talent? probably not, but I used to do this fun little thing in class with students and most of them couldn't replicate it, at least after a short time period---set a quarter on the edge of a table, with ~1/4 of the quarter hanging over the side. with your palm down, place your finger tips directly underneath the quarter, flip it up and catch it immediately. "immediately" will be reckoned by the simultaneousness of catching the quarter and your closed fist resting on the table where the quarter had previously sat.

on a more useful note, im good with maps, direction, geographical orientation, etc. and of course the all important knowing how much water to cook how much pasta (as opposed to wasting water) and how much sauce to be heating up at the same time!

What is your favourite movie music - not sth you'd necessarily listen without the movie, just sth that works very well in the movie?

bounty
11-16-2015, 06:46 PM
muse---I think troyia is reading great Gatsby and liking it. I believe I just read that in the "what are you reading now" thread.

I took a music and the film course in college and ever since then, I think I consciously pay attention to the music in the movie and how it jibes with the scene and how its making me feel.

three movies come to mind in terms of background instrumental soundtracks---one is the last of the mohicans (my celtic/folk bent showing), the star wars movies (the music accompanies and contrasts luke and darth vader really well) and kill bill. there are at least three outstanding music choices for scenes in that movie---one is when O-Ren Ishii and her bodyguards are entering the house of blues (tomoyasu hotei's battle without honor or humanity), the next when Beatrix first confronts O-Ren Ishii (ennio moricone's death rides a horse) and lastly when the two of them square off in a sword duel to santa esmerelda's don't let me be misunderstood. that particular scene (the opening parts of it) is amongst my favorite in all of movies.

on other hand, I recently watched guardians of the galaxy and thought the use of the old 70/80s tunes that the main character loved and listened to throughout the movie was exceptionally well done.

and I thoroughly enjoy rock of ages and will watch scenes from that over and over and over...but that's maybe a different question.

there are aspects of college teaching and coaching that are just wonderful so im tempted to say that, but my goodness that temptation is relatively quickly destroyed by so many instances of problem students and administrators that too often make it stressful bordering on miserable.

I think a particular slice of teaching I experienced stands in contrast to what I wrote above---being a grad assistant and teaching classes while being a student at the same time.

I also worked cross-country and track & field camps for 7 summers and loved that...

oh wait---! I also worked in aquatics for years and apart from the aforementioned "administration", I absolutely loved teaching swimming to kids, water exercise to adults, and lifeguard training to high school and college students.

yayy, thank you muse!

its sacrifice by zella day, yellow flicker beat by lorde, and you make me wanna die by the pretty reckless. I look forward to hearing.

hmm, that's a toughie---three come to mind, the maze runner, star trek into darkness, and x-men the days of future past. can I have a three way tie?

oh no, wait! the fault in our stars!

what movie do you like so much that youd watch it again and again pretty much every time it on tv?

Dark Muse

You Make Me Wanna Die hands down blew the other two out of the water for me.

I have to admit the one movie I will watch anytime I see it on tv is Jaws.

What book have you reread the most?

I'm pretty sure I read The Outsiders and Dear Enemy more than twice. Since I've been keeping track I've reread 1000 years of Solitude twice.

.did you see it papayhed? and if so, did you like it?

I did see it. I liked it. It is reminiscent of the original 3 but the parallels were starting to be a bit much.

i really appreciate that you guys listened to those songs thank you...

papayahed im not surprised to hear you say you like the pretty reckless song better---its got a bit of a metal feel to it. you might like some of their either music; its so much more so.

muse i think i answered a question like that before and i hope my answers somewhat consistent. ive read tom brown's schooldays ~6-7 times (i really have lost count).

i imagine i'll see the new star wars sometime---just not in the theaters i guess.

every time the sandlot is on tv, i watch it, and cry at the ending...

i would go to Antarctica----but whats the kicker of the question? the flying there, or the being there? id enjoy being there, but i think i don't want to fly there, or for that matter, take a boat there either. can i just wake up and be there? laughs....

if you are watching a movie that youre not really liking all that much, will you finish it, or no?

papayahed

Depends. Recently I skipped an afternoon of work and went to the movies. I did not plan wisely and the only half appealing movie was The Last Witch Hunter. I was ready to leave about a quarter way through but I talked myself into staying because I skipped work and darn it I was going to watch a movie. Next time I will check whats playing first before I actually tell them I have a Dr. appointment.

Have you ever done Karaoke and what song(s) are your favorite to perform?

Hawkman
01-11-2016, 10:51 AM
Not Karaoke, but I do sing and play live. Favourites tend to be folky numbers because they don't require the production values you need to do more boppy stuff, and they're suitable to perform solo. I do a bit of blues and bluegrass as well. I really like performing "Dustbowl Children," "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda," The Four Loom weaver," and a couple of Nickleback numbers, "Rockstar" and "Trying not to Love You." Both good songs. Paul Metser's, "Farewell to the Gold," is another favourite, but there are many others. For instrumentals, jigs are good because people tend to join in.

bounty
01-19-2016, 10:54 AM
well certainly all of them, even the ones im relatively good at, but pragmatically, im going to go with gardening, and investing.

this is going to be a challenging, and interactive one, I hope someone will indulge me, im finding it fascinating:

i don't have the musical knowledge to ask this as expertly as possible but im going to try. i suspect most people, when they are listening to music, sing along, or play air drums, etc.

i find myself wondering if in any given song though, when there is so much going on at once, including the singing, and the percussion (but all the other things as well too), we shift back and forth between parts, or if we stay on one part, and which part we default too (if its something other than the singing) or if you had to pick one part, which would it be and are you good enough to stay on it? or maybe you see yourself as the conductor, instructing and cueing all the parts?

so not a specific question, but rather a general area conglomeration of them.

by way of answering, so i have some context to understand your answer, could you use john newman's "love me again (remix)" please? (if there is an ep version, go with that one) that's the tune that's got me thinking this way...i absolutely love the song and im all over the map with it!

i recently watched the host, a movie made from the first in a series of novels by Stephanie meyer, the twilight author. pretty intriguing at first, got a little annoying throughout, but ultimately won me over by the end. I wouldn't give it a rip-roaring endorsement, but I would recommend it to certain people.

going to put my question again.

I listened to it and it doesn't move me to sing or listen more than once. If I may use the Gladys Knight classic Midnight Train to Georgia. I sing all parts of that song. The lead, the back up, everything. Until i'm out of breath. I'm not an air guitar or air drummer, except on Shout at the Devil by Motley Crue.

It only made me cry figuratively, I didn't really cry. It was a 31 hour audiobook and perhaps the worst story I have ever listened to. Who told Neal that it was okay for him to break the golden rule of writing; show, don't tell. Of the 31 hours, I would reckon 15 of those hours were dedicated to exposition. It was mind-numbing.

It has taken years to get over the terror, but I am now able to give occasional talks and lessons as assigned. When I was in 1-12 grades (I missed K for some reason) I took sick days when having to give book reports and the like and never made them up. I'm still working on "Talking Head" syndrome when giving lessons, and keeping my head raised when speaking from a prepared talk (no teleprompters).

A poem I wrote about the subject:

Jelly Legs

It happened on what started as a normal Sabbath Day
A Councilor out prowling the Ward for His prey
Through the corridors in his dark suit and tie
Searching for me, though I knew not, nor why
I had but adjourned from the Sunday school class
To spend a penny, washed up, then alas
Exiting the room our eyes met and locked
Now it's three weeks later: Time to give a talk

I starting using a VPN this week and just today I had to change my VPN settings or pages wouldn't load (Europe works so far). What is your favorite orchestral wind instrument ?

Benjy

For me, it`s the horn or French horn (especially when playing in an orchestra). I like its use most in the 19th century symphonies and piano concertos. It has some great moments, for example, in Bruckner`s 4th symphony.

Which 5 books would you take with you on a deserted island?

Well, probably the Dostoyevsky novels we were discussing because they were meant to be read over and over, and since there is always something new to learn from them. For the fifth one, it's a cliche (but then so is the question), but probably Tolstoy's War and Peace for the same reasons.

Which 10 books would you take with you on a deserted Island?

Pompey Bum
05-16-2018, 05:42 PM
Well, the old joke answer is that you would only need one: Elementary Shipbuilding. But okay, in addition to the five novels I mentioned earlier, I would take Journey to the West, the Bible, Tom Jones, Vanity Fair, and (if it's not cheating) the Complete Works of Shakespeare. But no Dickens. He's great but way too judgmental to take to a deserted island. I'd hang myself from the coconut tree on the first day.

What is your favorite book of the dystopian genre ?

Benjy
05-19-2018, 07:33 AM
Well, I havent' read much of this genre. Besides some hardly known German books (mostly by Andreas Schlüter), the only one on Wikipedia's dystopian literature list that I had entirely read was "That Hideous Strength" (C.S. Lewis). So I take that one, although towards the end it became more and more confusing and disappointing to me, though always with a lot of suspense.
