Summary Chapter 24

The streets are deserted near the end of the day. The few stragglers are going about their business and not paying attention to others or to their surroundings.

Miles asks the constable to let Edward escape. The constable refuses, but Miles mentions that he overheard the conversation about the pig the constable had with the woman. The constable committed a crime and can hang for it.

The constable claims it was just a joke. Miles says he broke the law, and the penalty is death. He doubts the judge will see it as a joke. The constable promises to restore the pig to the woman and allow Edward to escape.
