only 8 milions people in NY,Virgil? I read about 20. Does that include the outskirts? Please tell me, I'm confused.

Well, I've been to just about most of the major cities. My family is actually from a town near Avellino. So I've been over a few times. Is New york like a Europewan city? I don't know. It does have lots of culture, but being 8 million people makes it different from any city I know. The shear size of it, and of course the skyscrapers, makes it different. Lot of people of Italian ethnicity here though. :) Like me. :D

Hi Virgil

I've read somewhere that the number almost dubles because of the visitors that enter the city every day. It that true?

I've been to London once and i have been amazed how many people were there ....... so different from the city/country i live in.

Hi
This is my first post. I'm from near London in the UK, was hoping to find a forum of short story writers, to share work and interests and Google came up with this.

Not had a chance to read all intros yet as kids are squalling in front of tv right now, but spotted Tiresias mention Steve Earle. I love his music.

Right now reading The Wind Up Bird, Japanese short stories in translation and love them.

Hope to get to know you all in time.

Do you mean to ask if NY doubles in population during from visitors? We have 8 million inhabitants; doubling would mean that it would go to 16 million. I know we get a lot of tourists, but that is more than I can imagine. No I don't think it doubles. But they say the hotels are always full.

Hi everyone! My name is Ricksea, but you can call me Rick if you would like. This is my first post, and from what I have read this seems to be an excellant forum. I am currently a high school student and am planning to major in English in college. Literature is my life, and my dream is to become a professional textbook editor. It may seem like a dull career to most, but you will find that I am not a boring person at all. I hope I have fun here!

Speaking as some whose qualifications are in business and finance and dealing with scientists and engineers for a living, can I pass on my highest accolade for your chosen career path!

There will always be sufficient attraction, thanks to fame, money and lifestyle, in "professional" careers - doctors, lawyers, scientists and engineers, but there can never be enough people to whom literature is a vocation. I salute you.

Hello. I've shipwrecked (not accidentally) on to this forum from another. I already recognize some names, which is interesting. Although I've disguised myself. Haha. :)

I'm a graduate student in Comparative Literature, and I study primarily West African literature in French. But I'm really here to talk about everything else I love to read, because I need a break from my academic life once in a while. Some of my favorite authors are Barbara Kingsolver, Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie, John Irving, and George R.R. Martin.

Guess that's it for now. :)

Hello everyone. I was hoping someone could help me out. My name is Kimmy. I just registered for the first time on this site tonight and created a profile. I have no clue how to even post anything or contact anyone. I'm wanting to post something on this book by H.G. Wells called The War of the Worlds. I'm not wanting to post this to anyone in particular, but practically anyone whose read this book. I just got done reading the book for school, and I have these sheets with questions I need to have answered from the book. There were 3 questions I was having a hard time with. I was hoping anyone whose read the book could try to answer any of these questions for me. I'd really appreciate it. I know this probably isn't the right site for this, but I need help asap!! My project is due soon and I don't understand it!! My 3 questions I need help answering for this are:

1. What historical disaster does the narrator refer to in the book?

2. When the martians died, where was the message sent to first?

3. What technology was gained from the martians?

If anyone whose read this book can help me out, please let me know!! I don't know how this works or if anyone will even see this. If this is how it works, then please send me messages or respond to this somehow. Thank you so much to anyone who helps me out :-) I feel really stupid.

Hi gymgirl! Welcome to the forum. :)

These are some really good books you have mentioned over here. I would especially recommend you Jane Eyre, Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and A Tale of Two Cities. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is also a fine and a short read. I have read some of the Tales from the Arabian Nights. Well, their Urdu translation and they were enjoyable. :)

Have fun!

I haven't logged on to this forum since I signed up in 2005. I'm sure I never introduced myself. I am a middle-aged teacher of teenagers. I work in a one-room high school, teaching all subjects. I have a mathematics and biology ( BS in Wildlife Biology, minor in math; MS in Range Management)background from college, but fell in love with teaching. Literature has become a passion, especially sharing good literature with my students. Other that my work and my family (husband, three grown sons) my loves are my Basset Hound, Annabelle; my goose, Edith; my two Guinea pigs, Lucille and Rosie, and my flock of laying hens. Books, kids, animals - that's about it. My dream is to have a couple of Scottish highland cattle and a small flock of sheep. Oh yeah, I am a compulisve knitter.

Nice to meet you all. :)

Well, hello everybody. I'm 17, a junior in high school and can't wait to be done with it. I Love to read, I always have. I just finished reading "A Streecar Named Desire". I usually hate reading plays, but I liked this one. I just saw the movie too--loved it. (But I'm a sucker for vivien leigh...and hot young marlon brando). I play tennis, snowboard, try to run...don't have enough motivation, though I wish I did.
Jack Kerouac is my hero; I love the beat age. On the Road, Naked Lunch, Howl and some other Ginsberg poems, and half of the Dharma Bums are all I've read so far.
I have no idea what I want to do when I get out of high school. Go to college for sure. The only other thing I know is that I do NOT want to be in debt afterwards like my sister is. I want to be able to be free afterwards. I pretty much just want to travel around, live in Paris, Rio, anywhere, and write. Thats pretty much my passon. So there you go, me in a nutshell.

Hi, Wow there are some really interesting people on here. I joined to try and find some answers for my daughter about a Leonid Andreyev play called The Serpents Tale ( We have no idea what the character is talking about. Do you ?). Anyway I am glad I did. I like to read a variety of genres and authors but my favourites would be Kurt Vonnegut and Gabrielle Garcia Marquez. (did I spell that correctly) Nothing alike I know, but for me it is not about the style more how the book makes me feel.
About me
1. australian
2. Mother and wife
3. love holidays
Nothing exciting but I am happy with life.;)

@tyeness: I am currently into Amy Tan's The Kitchen God's Wife. I must say I am still overwhelmed with the story and I find it hard to finish it! The sufferings and hardship portrayed there... o.o

I'm actually a grad student going for my MA in literature, but it's hard to find support at my school and additionally, my mother is unwell so I'm staying home a lot to care for her and completing my MA in the meantime. I'd like to connect with others who are also interested in lit. I'm trying to learn more about literary theory, too - I feel woefully inadequate in that area. My current favorite author is Flannery O'Connor but that seems to change from month to month. Whatever I'm currently reading is usually my favorite at the moment. :)

My name is Patricia, I'm eighteen years old and at college in East London. I am going to university next year to study English Literature combined with either Philosophy or Law.

I don't like introductions because I feel that no matter how hard you may try you will never find the right words to express yourself in the way that you want to. I hope that you wont take this as too much of a first impression and instead get to know me better.

I found this site while I was researching Metaphysical Poetry (which I absolutely love) and this is where I found the most help. Thank you!

I hope to get to know loads of new people here and to share my ever growing love for Literature.

Pleased to meet you xxx

05-21-2007, 02:12 PM
Greetings! I'm not very good with introductions, but I'll give it my best shot. Here it goes:
My name is Erik Eliot. I'm twenty years old and I reside in southern California. I attend Mt. Sac community college right now and studying to be an English major. I will be transferring to Whittier college in about two semesters (4 year university). I work at Barnes and Noble as a bookseller and I really enjoy the atmosphere. My passion is writing and it will always be. I've grown up reading and writing since I can remember, and there's absolutely no better feeling to me that getting consumed in a book by the fireplace or writing until four in the morning.
My favorite author by far is Aldous Huxley. I've read almost all of his books/essays and I can't possibly fathom his writing technique and how ahead of his time he was. I also really enjoy the philosophy of Friedrich Nitsche. I love his writing style and the subjects he write about. Finally, when it comes to poetry I am obsessed with T.S Eliot. Even though an abundance of readers say that "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" is their favorite poem by him, I have to have the same opinion. The way the poem flows almost flawlessly and more amazing, is the fact that he wrote that poem when he was only twenty (phenomenal). I also enjoy Sylvia Plath, William Carlos Williams, Akiane, Ezra Pound, W.S. Merwin, Dylan Thomas, and countless others.
I think I'm rambling on a bit too much so I'm going to wrap it up like a present. I just found this forum last night and I was too tired to fully browse through its entirety so here I am. I glad that there is a forum dedicated to literature and I can't wait to meet new people who have the same interests as I do. So feel free to message me anytime and say hello or anything you would like. Thanks for reading this and have a fantastic day!

Hi All...

Just briefly, my parents named me "Aleyn" after the character in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales!

It took me until my late 40's to find out any more than that but wow - Once I found Chaucer in the original english well, I was hooked by the language.

My other love is Science Fiction, not Fantasy, the hard core stuff from the likes of Edgar Rice Burroughs and E E Doc Smith.

Just a BTW, it would be nice to hear if anyone else has the first name "Aleyn", with that particular spelling!

Regards, Aleyn AKA Sir Chaucer

PS, I'm at LE652QH, UK and more or less stuck to my computer chair with disability so, if anyone is just round the corner from me, drop me a line OK?

Hello everyone. I have to say that this site is turning out to be a great find. I am going to be 50 in May 07, soooo, that's a lot of fun right there. I love to read non fiction and current events. My hobbies include, cooking, playing and building guitars, horticulture, sceince, mathmatics, birdwatching, astronomy...I am married with one son and almost all my family on my side is dead, just me and a couple of brothers left and really one of them is kind of a pain. I own my own business, hand carved picture frames and I've fired all my employees sooo, it's just me now. Hope to have a conversation with other lovers of the written word, or I may just rant. See ya out there.

Hey everyone!
Just thought I would introduce myself - this is my first post so I figured that it would be a good place to start!
I live in the South East of England. I'm 17, and am currently studying for my A Levels in English Literature (of course!), History, RS, and Maths. I'm a bit of a self-confessed boffin, so I love college as I enjoy learning (have done for as long as I can remember!).
Literature and history are my passions - I have a real thirst for understanding more about them - hence joining the forum!
My hobbies include salsa dancing (not very well I might add!), listening to music (mainly indie rock), and being a typical teenager and socialising with my friends. I work at a restaurant as a waitress at the weekends.
I really enjoy reading. I am sure that I have not read as much as many people on the forum, but out of the books that I have read, I have really loved analysing them.
One of the books that has had one of the most profound effects on me, is 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte. I have been studying it for my English Literature course, and I found that there is so much within it that I can relate to. The feminist and class issues conveyed were so before their time, and relationships and emotions that Jane experiences can be related to those in real life.
So anyway, I will stop rambling now, and try to work my way around this site!

Hello everyone! I wanted to start out by saying that I am an avid reader. I have always loved classics though Shakespeare intimidated me until the past year or so in school (I'm an English Lit major so of course I encounter his work on a regular basis) I have also fallen in love with several 20th century writers that I had honestly never heard of. My last term paper was written about Kate Chopin's The Storm and I am now reading The Awakening. I do enjoy modern novels but am more comfortable curling up with Hemingway or Chaucer or Bronte (insert sister here).
Other than reading, I enjoy writing (poetry and fiction), listening to music, spending time with my son and my fiance, and playing with my goofy black lab, Kaya.

Greetings everyone, I have signed up mostly because I do not read much, similar to the poster above. I'm 16, and I'm not very educated, I hope to clear that up, both grammar wise (I'm foreign, too), and book wise. Forums often help me become more knowledgeable in a subject, so, here I am.

Among school books, my favorites are Slaughterhouse Five, Fahrenheit 451, Catcher in the Rye. Otherwise, I read mostly sci-fi authors, like Clifford Saimak and Issac Asimov. I am hoping to read more of classic books, though.

And a cookie to whoever knows where my nick originated from. :D

Ciao.
For many moons I've been looking for a good lit forum with people like me who love to read and discuss books. So this is very exciting.
I don't have any favorite author: I haven't read enough.
As far as novels are concerned, my favorite favorites are A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court, The Count of Monte Cristo, Notre Dame de Paris, The Gates of Zion, A Daughter of Zion, David Copperfield, 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Prydain Cycle, The Angel's Command, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
But perhaps the best novels have yet to be written.

Greetings! I am a going-to-be librarian and Internet geek. I actually found this forum through a project for work, where I'm looking for short stories either in the public domain or that I could track down the authors for and request permission to use the story for a puzzle/storytelling fundraiser event...
My favorite authors are Diana Wynne Jones, Terry Pratchett, Shannon Hale, Neil Gaiman, Vivian Vande Velde, Robin McKinley, Patricia C. Wrede, Patricia A. McKillip, Holly Black, and Charlaine Harris... to name but a few.
Aside from reading books, web comics, comic books, graphic novels, and a few choice blogs, my hobbies include playing online games, learning the electric bass, and web organizational tools (ex. Flickr, LibraryThing, 43 Things, etc.).
I look forward to exploring this site thoroughly! :D

Hello, I've been a member for some time now, but spent it contributing to threads- it's an addiction.

I'm a twenty-five year old college student. I just completed the first semester of a psychology major, which will lead to a career in psychiatry and neurology.

I've had an inactive interest in writing until the beginning of this year. I'm a fan of Hemingway and Borges. And thanks to suggestions from this forum, I'm readin Light in August ... wow! I didn't k now what could satisfy me after reading Waiting for Godot, but this did nicely.

I read Sanctuary earlier this year and concluded that Faulkner is a
powerhouse. I'm reading Molloy next, but can't wait to return to Faulkner- The sound and the Fury or As I Lay Dying ... I'm thinking Knight's Gambit ... but, Wild Palms, Absolam Absolam and Go Down Moses all sound good- so many, so, so many.

I don't know about what particular user name you are talking about, but it's all about interpretation.

hey!

I am a Czech student and I am looking for someone who knows or teaches the American literature. I have to write quite a big work and I need to read some of the English speaking writers (British / American - I prefer this). As I will have to read a lot of his / her work, I need it to be short stories if possible. And an easy language to understand, like Kate Chopin, or Sherwood Anderson.

My knowledge about the American authors is not so wide so I would very appreciate any advice.

Thank you.

Welcome Kvetinka. I like that name by the way. It has a very nice sound to it. What particular era of American writers are you looking for? I would say that Ernest Hemmingway is not so difficult to read for a foreign student. If you would prefer a female writer, perhaps you might want to try Edith Wharton. What kind of work is your project?

Hello All,

I'm very glad I happened upon this site. I'm a college student (will be a soph) and I'm trying to decide what to do with my life, or at least my years spent at school. The initial plan was to be an English/French double major as these subjects come most naturally. Otherwise, there's philosophy, psychology, mathematics, and environmental studies which also divert me. My courses in literature this year greatly disheartened me. I hope to use this summer and this site to decide if my passion for literature can be reinvigorated. My gut says yes, and I think it's already begun.

This semester I studied almost exclusively British modern poetry. It was rather draining. My favorite poem I studied was Eliot's "The Journey of the Magi." I just finished reading The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, and it made me very happy. Anyone have anything to say about this book or Ms. Stein? I was disappointed to see she doesn't have a thread devoted to her.

I love the word assonance, and also finding it at play within poetry.

Alrighty, there's my intro. I'm off to explore other threads.

06-07-2007, 07:05 AM
Sooo nice to hear from someone a word addressed to me, thanks! I think that I do not have any specific era of American writers on mind but I would like it to be modern. Well, let´s see if I can make myself clear. I will have the example of E. Hemmingway - he does not seem to me as someone easy to read, it has got quite a lot of words from a particular background (marine talk, medical talk) and I would spend a lot of time looking up everything that would be necessary to understand it well. Neither the subject of war or fishing attracts my attention.
Please do not take this bad. It is not a critics. I myself, I am just trying to make clear what I am looking for.

Anyway, I will have a look on that female one you told me, E.W.

My project is supposed to be done on 40 pages. It should concern the work of an English writing author. And they want to make me think, the teachers, to come up with my own thoughts, with something provocative. You see, I need to find something I can be inspired by to deal with this extreme amount of pages.

if better, contact me on: [email protected]

Thanks for your help!

BTW: this nick name, i just grabbed something that I happend to think about. There are another places to post the explanation of a nick name, so shortly: "little flower" in Czech.

Have advanced degrees in nursing from 3 different universities, but nursing isn't my only interest. I'm "into" computers, woodworking (less now that I'm disabled), politics (don't get me started, I'm ***very*** conservative), and visiting with my virtual friends on various fora, although I seldom post much.

Greetings all you fellow travellers in the universe of literature!

I have enjoyed following some of the threads here in the forum for a little while: The thread dedicated to reading and discussing D.H. Lawrence's collected short stories one at a time is a tour de force; very interesting to read for the personal insights, and an inspiration to undertake a personal reading of Lawrence's short stories. The book of the month project is also a wonderful idea, and I hope to be able to participate in the future -- Wilde is up next, is he?!

As to me, I do not know that there is so very much to tell. Like many before me, and around here, I live a quiet life of desperation. Film, literature and music are the things that keep me sane and propel me through life. Unfortunately I have no personal friends or acquaintances, who share these passions. So, the internet it is -- how fortunate that there are places like this forum, and how really sad that it in many ways is the only recourse to meet and discuss something as central to life as literature.

I am a young Dane (who is perhaps not so young any longer), who has chosen to reside in Sweden. My years so far have been scattered across the Western hemisphere -- Germany, Virginia, Denmark, Chicago, Michigan, Bruxelles, very briefly London, and now Malmö. As far back as I can remember, I have always had a love affair, if not with literature as such, then at least with the written word, the telling of stories. At 15 I discovered "literature," at 25 I was convinced that I would eventually make my way through all of world literature (for a while I was a little like the young girl in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, who is going through the card file at the library, and reading everything in alphabetical order), a dream-ambition that I gradually abandoned over the next decade. And now, I just read...

As mentioned, film is another great passion of mine, and I have been a fairly active member of www.criterionforum.org for the past year. Finding that I have enjoyed that experience, and actually learned a lot, I decided to find a similar forum dedicated to literature. That is really the story so far. I look forward to being a member here, and sometimes hopefully contributing something to the discussion.

Hello there! I am so exited I found this site!

I am afraid I am horrible with this forum format. I have recently been accepted into an online program for Writing and Literature and need to improve my posting skills. That would be the first reason I began searching for a literature site the other of course is because I love books.

I noticed that a few of my postings appeared in some very odd places… I think I may have discovered why – I was not watching the dates and it seems I may have posted a couple replies to old messages – yet they showed up at the end of the thread. Like I said I am new to this so please bear with me.

Here is my introduction. I am a mother and soon to be a grandmother (September). I am a custodian at a small college. I have also been attending classes there on a part-time basis and quite frankly I am tired of the slow progress, hence the transfer to an online college where I will keep a full course load. I originally majored in English with the intent to become a high school teacher; however I decided I would prefer a college setting.

My hobbies are cake decorating, drawing, watercolor painting, bird-watching, gardening (not the edible type) though I hope to create one someday, and of course reading.

I enjoy the tranquility of my back-yard bird habitat. I can boast that on one occasion I was blessed with the presence of the following birds: A Rose-Breasted Grossbeak, Yellow-Bellied Woodpecker, Nuthatch, a pair of Cardinals, three Mourning Doves, several Wrens, many Hummingbirds and Gold Finches, and an Indigo Bunting.

I love to learn anything new. I am also a do-it-yourselfer… which is good since my husband drives a semi and is only home one day a week.

Well there it is. If you see one of my postings and it seems out of place please understand. I will improve.

Hello All!

Like Stefanie, I'm horrible with this forum format, so you've been forewarned.

My name is Christopher and I'm 24 years old. I was born in Toronto, Ontario and now reside in Kitchener, Ontario. I've travelled quite a bit over the years having driven across Canada and some parts of the United States, and I even lived in British Columbia for about 5 years.

I'm fairly active and run and work out a lot. I'm also planning to run a 10k Marathon in September. I believe it's got something to do with Octoberfest but I'll admit I don't know too much about it. I also like to write short stories and do draw occasionally.

I've only recently started reading for leisure again after about 6 or 7 years, and I still find it's much more enjoyable than sitting in front of the TV.

Most recently I finished The Great Gatsby & Death of a Salesman, both which were immensely enjoyable. Last night I ordered Ulysses by James Joyce and Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, so I'm looking forward to those.

Anyway, I'm happy to be here, this seems like a very friendly community. :)

Ciao,

Christopher

HEY GUYS,
WELCOME TO OUR WORLD OF LITERATURE!!

I am not new, yet this is the first time I introduce myself to the forum!
I am Syrian. I love this forum coz it is multinational and coz it has always sth new to offer! I graduated from Damascus University last year and got a license in English literature. I am in the very first stages of doing my MA which is going to be on British drama. I am going to focus on the theatre of the absurd. I have just finished reading The Gift of The Gorgon by Peter Shaffer. I advise u to read it. I write poems; I have few of them in this forum.
I love Nietzsche, kafka, beckett, Shaffer, woolf, krestiva and many others.

I am an avid reader, writer, and teacher. I am a huge public library advocate and I am always on the prowl for great reads! I often find that I am reading a book that was written and popular years ago...please excuse me in advance if my posts seem dated! I am also usually on the library's 'most wanted' list for overdue books- I have ownership issues. (Did you know that library fines are now added to credit reports?) I intend to read your posts and learn from y'all. (Southern gal!) Thank you for this opportunity.

Hello everyone. Well, I've been here and gone off and on over the last couple of years or so and it has just hit me that I don't think I've ever posted and introduction during that entire time. So, for all who have been here for so long, sorry that was very rude of me. In my defense I seem to have trouble keeping my online activities strait. Most of my time is spent doing my courses for college. I've spent the last 4 years obtaining my marketing degree and am now completing one of my final two classes.
There isn't too much to know about me. I enjoy reading, writing, painting, quilting, cooking, and just about any other artistic pursuit I can think of. That said, I have very little time to do any of this. I'm a mother to two children and a wife so life is quite full. My son is now 4 years old and my daughter is just 9 months. Life is busy, but my time here is some of the only time I take for myself each day. I'm always trying to find new books and authors to read, but I'm also a fan of the classics. I love to discuss Shakespeare and I try to make time to look at some of what everyone is writing. For me this is my release. I can be part of discussions about my favorite stories, but I can also post my own story I am working on for critique. Though very rough, I am optimistic about the final outcome. I am currently laying out a real timeline and charater listing for my story Jump Awry, and even more fervently hoping for inspiration for a better title. I find little time to really put my ideas on paper, so my additions will generally be short and not as frequent as I would like. I am enjoying the writing process, though, since it has been years since I was bitten by my muse. I just need to find the time to lay the story out in note format, and then I can worry about the true writing of it. I find ideas are like momories and easily lost if you don't keep a record.
I hope to meet all of you in the near future and look foward to future discussions.

I am definitely not your typical subscriber, and my primary attributes would seem at first to be an oxymoron - an engineering computer science teacher who is a fundamentalist Christian. Yet, the more I study scripture, the more obvious it becomes to me that these two views are completely compatible. Just to clarify: my interpretation of "fundamentalist" is one who believes that the Bible in its original textual form is absolute truth, the result of mens' writing under the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, that same Holy Spirit is present in the world today, and continues to reveal truth to those who would hear Him.

Being a newbe to this world, if we need a separate conversation on this topic, you might have to show me where to look.

Hm, I am just a wonderer who hopes to find others as I- nothing less. AT least here, I can express who I am- in the real world, I am mocked. haha, Mocking encourages me, yet some real encouragement would truly do better. I also enjoy encouraging others and help them become better at what they love- to write and read!

I am new to this network and I was happy when I found this place on the internet where people fond of books and reading just like myself can meet and know each other. My name is Mounir, I am a 50 ys old male working and living in Alexandria, Egypt. I am a psychiatrist and I am fond of reading and knowing about all the world cultures, literature, history, mythology, history of ideas and philosophy. I am also naturally interested in books about psychology, psychiatry and psychotherapy. I am also fond of classical music whether oriental or western, long walks, cats, and a bit of cooking !

At present I am reading again all the works of Naguib Mahfouz, last week I finished "A begining and an end", one of his earliest novels. Last year and this year I also read some works by Henrik Ibsen, I especially liked "The Wild Duck" and "Doll's House". At the same time I am reading several collections of short stories: works by Maupassant, "Exemplary Tales" by Cervantes, and a collection by the Russian writer, actor and cinema director Vasily Shukshin.

Best wishes to everybody :)

Hi
I just registered at this Literature Network Forums and wish to say hi.
Unfortunately, you will probably notice that I will not be a very interesting partner and precious adviser as I have to admit I am french and have only a poor english language usage. I am not at all involved into high litterature studies or works , and am only a ordinary book reader .
What do I do there , you might then ask ?
Well , I happen to read books in english just to try keeping a practice and also books of english/american writers in french .
I recently read Jane Eyre of C Bronte (in french) , and really liked that book . It was a long time I had not enjoyed such a novel . I loved it so much , that I read just then after Wuthering Heigts , then again Jane Eyre , but this time in English ( I help myself with the french version ) , Wide Sagasso Sea , and finally C. Bronte by E. Gaskell . Going on the net , I try to learn more about the Bronte sisters and on that site I found the most interesting discussions and information than anywhere else .
So , I decided to register . I may not be able to add much value , but I may keep practicing , reading english and learning from all of you.

Just a quick hello to everyone at this forum.
I have been reading a few pieces and so far really like what I see. I would love for you to read my work and make comments positive negative whatever, it doesn't matter to me, its all good.

Poetry for me is the most personal of all artforms since the Poet paints impressions and emotions in langauge every one can understand. This poem describes a lot about me, in fact my ? (not quite sure what she is yet) says its almost to personal you decide, but this is a small picture of my life

SONG FROM AN UNFINISHED LIFE

This is
As bright
As my darkness gets

There
Are no stars
Are there in my blue eyes tonight?

The city street lights
Which I thought
I left behind me long ago
When I moved away from Hell’s Kitchen
Three years before the Twin Towers fell down
I had quit working at the Palm

Although, I miss the friendship
I also stopped drinking two X Guinness
Followed by Bushmill’s Black Label shooters at Kevin’s
Across from the China Club next to McDuffy’s

Yet, still
The lights
Reflected
In the broken glass ground into
The street to make the blackness of the streets
Turn all glittery as if they were paved with
Diamonds

To save money on recycling
Sometimes
They
Aren't bright enough
For me to see
Through the
Usual night blindness
I never had before I turned 35 or so

Headlights flashing
The honking of a horn behind me
Sounds like
A man bludgeoning his wife to death with an axe
That’s a line from I play I did
In another life and two degrees ago

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing
Neon signs
BUzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzinnnnnnnggggggggggg
Dying out at the end of the word
Just buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzedddddd
Flickered out
Like a burned out firefly caught
In the window of the liquor store
Where I used to buy cheap wine and return the empties
For five cents which then was
Equal
Only to the occasional emotional cocaine fueled flare-up

I have always wanted
To render down the night sky
Until
It’s fats and juices boiled
Down
To lovely flavorable clear stock like Gordon Ramsey would have made
If he had the time

Invisible

Just thoughts
While
Sitting for ten minutes or was it 20,
Somehow it always feels longer
When
Waiting
Under
The never ending glare of a red traffic light
With it’s endless, Endless
Metronomic single tone
Rhythmic pinging to let the deaf know the light had changed
Or like when you need to change the battery in a dying smoke alarm

On 50th and 8th
Where Siberia used to be
Under the streets and out of sight within the bowels of the subway system
SO, the worker bees could not see us come stumbling out
Into the blaring light of day
Eyes red from stale cigarette smoke
Bleeding dry cracked nostrils from thick lines
Cut on the ancient Addams Family pinball machine

I always forget to
Wait for the left arrow to turn green

I
Often find myself wishing

I could be like the stars
And
Disappear completely
From view
Whenever I don’t feel far enough from
The ugly side of my past one hundred and two lives

I know
In a crowd
I can be most conspicuous
With my skin translucent
Smooth like marble
With not a mark or a line
The immense physical and moral presence; defiant
Yet, never without conscience

Amazingly long delicate fingers, finger nails almost clear
Due to the anemic lack of blood
And feet that do not make a sound

The very mirror of patient misery
Soft-voiced and so so sooooooooooo very human
Unable to read minds, or to levitate

A new kind of night creature who hovers
In deep shadows at the Avery Fisher Hall or
In the alley behind the Royal Opera House
Just to listen to the whispering notes of
Mozart’s last piercing irresistible song

I am long past questing for God
Or seeking out true humanity or the Devil
Or Truth
Or even love

Once there was someone who thought it
Sweet
I would read the poetry of Keats by the light of just one candle
So as not to disturb her sleep

Or once when I was found standing
In the rain on a slick downtown street right outside the Angelique
Watching through the store window the young actor
As Romeo kissed his tender loving Juliet
On a television screen some salesman forgot to turn off

I once had a soul
That may have been beautiful beyond description
As immortal as Lucifer
To bad I was
Compelled to do cruel things

As, a tormented outsider
Always ready, to transcend gender
To speak from my heart or soul about different matters
Of life and death
Of Love,
Of loneliness
Of guilt and
Of pain, yes of pain, bitter pain I’ve tasted over and over
Until I learned to love the flavor and couldn’t live without it

With self-imposed charm, humor, and invincible innocence
Which at the time
Maybe I should have cherished more
All of my beloved heroes
I brought
Alive to carry
All my guilt and suffering

When I walked these same silent streets so long ago
In my fine black evening clothes
High frilled collars
High cut boots
With sweeping waistcoat that dear sweet Silkie once designed for me
When
I was someone else

So even
As, the light changes
From red to green
I alone
Again blaze
Out of the city towards the expressway to the road

I have to take home

Down Jericho Turnpike
In my deep green GM
With the Northern Irish sticker
Which was once on my American Classic motorcycle
When I rode it through the thin roads of Antrim

To rush past the slow burning fires
Of the dying Bar-B-Que crowd at Queen’s Bay Beach

Past
The densely-packed Target shopping center
That sometimes gives hope and
Meaning to late night shoppers like myself
Who can’t stomach the food at Applebees
And
Who like me
Found themselves
Craving a very rare and bloody steak with sizzling hot fried onions at 5 am

I Love to drive into
That long lasting ever night
That always seems to lie and burn before me
I know my cell phone will ring
To fill my heart with false hopes and searing
Because I can not admit I love
Long before I ever reach my home
Before
I pour myself
A fine old Port or ice cold whiskey I keep for special nights such as these
When I can’t sleep

And gently lift myself into that solitary abyss of sleep
That awaits my gentle fall
With a little help from Seroquel

I guess this
Is as bright as my darkness is going to get
Since I am
Forever trapped in my little corner of hell
From where I can see heaven just beyond the curtain
I find I can not reach through

It's easy to understand
Why I,
An overly thinking and somewhat irrational emotional man
Feels nausea while
Contemplating
The spinning of the whole world on it’s slanted axis

By confronting all the brute facts of my own existence

In all of my hideous, bloody juicy half undead glory
I find the taste of my own heart horrid but it is my heart
A taste of my own fetid emptiness
Which is always waiting
To be fed
In the bottomless pit
Of ego where
I once saw the curse of Tantalus
And
Knew once and for all

I am the biggest fraud of all
A Romantic who can not fall in Love
While all my words seem to paint
A picture of that which is always unattainable

and

The sweet searing scarring pain of regret
I missed the prize
I feel you wish
You'd never won the face of beauty
That bewitched and ultimately betrays the wildflower
That I saw spring up with ease
from the dunghill in the back garden
Where only weeds and dandelions once grew

Somewhere I think, As Artists,
We have all lost our sight
Because of it’s roots are to deep

I always try to remind myself, not to or
Don't make that mistake again and again and again
Yet somehow I always remember to hold my nose
To bear in mind what lies beneath the surface

I thought I remembered where
Old Nicky-boy used to sit always
Vigilant at the side door
Waiting for me to come home with a fresh bone from my kitchen

Now
Like me
He curses and squints at the harsh light
Of a single 40-watt bulb which stares into the stale
Cold void that leads downstairs to the place or cave where I dwell
Beneath the sounds
Of tiny footsteps, running,
A television playing loudly to cover the sounds of lovemaking
On the couch

This is
Where there is no sun that stares
Back, glaring

I know I haven't eaten yet today
In almost 24 hours or maybe it was more
I forget the last time I was home,
The last time I was truly home
And it’s my stomach that's growling
Just as my heart does now
Yearning to curl up and be fed

As I ponder what a masterless life would be like
I only wonder what lies behind
The half-empty jar of Hellman’s mayo
Or the lone frozen longneck lying on its side
Maybe I’ll drink it later
When I think no one is looking
Or maybe I will wait till tomorrow after I cut the lawn

As I wait
For good fortune
To appear like some magic tidbit
Or the stray catch of a lotto number
Like I did a few months ago

Old Nicky’s old ears twitch
At the sounds
Of my last hangover
He groans
And wooden shuffling
Down the hallway
Towards the sounds of vacuous chatter
In the background of my ever playing
TV portraying once again the pains and sorrows
Of yet another neglected spouse

His cold nose wrinkles
Recoils at the unseen molecules of yesterday’s perspiration
And beer-battered
Flesh who’s smells are oozing
Through stifling air

He looks up, at the kitchen entrance
Me, a familiar figure wavering once more after
Another night long battle with a bottle of Stoli’s
I keep in freezer
In case you ever stop by
But
Since you never do
I felt it was a waste

He, that old dog, who have been put down long ago
I just don’t have the heart
He watches

My once wiry frame now doubled over
Wondering where my life went and what ever happen to
The glam-punk rock star I always wanted to be

And a half-digested volley from
The remnants of a late night greasy diner breakfast spews
Onto the dirty vinyl floor
Now I have to mop it

Now I am older and a little fatter then perhaps I should be
I waddle across the room
As he sniffs at the yellow and brown slurry
Once the contents of my stomach
His headlamp eyes reflect
Lit with hunger

Tilts his head
Toward me, the pitiful man
With a wrinkled canine brow
Humbly pleading

"Is it okay, now?"

His tail
Wagging with indifferent gratitude

Hello everyone. I just registered and am looking forward to some good literary discussions.

My name is Jessica, and books are something of which I cannot get enough. My favorite is 19th century Russian literature: Dostoevsky, Gogol, Tolstoy, Goncharov, etc. I also like history and philosophy. I write poetry and would someday soon like to branch out from that.

I also enjoy music (heavy metal, classical, Danny Elfman, classic rock), photography, vegetarianism, learning, cooking, baking, aromatherapy, collecting autographs, and travel.

I look forward to getting to know you all.

Cheers,
Jessica

HELLO EVERYBODY!!!!

I'm actually not so new...but i never got to introducing myself to the forum...so this is my chance

My name is Aldana, I'm from Argentina and I live in a small town south of a province from "el interior"...that would be other than Buenos Aires... Whenever you mention Argentina to people abroad, they immediately think of B.A, but there's sooooo much more to Argentina than just Buenos Aires.

Every province has its own magic...and even if mine is not so wonderful (because we were not graced with gorgeous landscapes or cosmopolitan cities) there's still lots to feel proud of!!! ;) Our capital city -Santa Fe- is really well known for its "alfajores santafesinos" kind of a mini cake filled with "dulce de leche" :D yummy!!!! And Rosario...the craddle of our national flag...and home of the greatest culture in our country. Most of the best musicians, writers and actors are from Rosario. It's a beautiful city filled with magic.

My own town has some magic of its own. It's situated south of Santa Fe province and is called " Venado Tuerto" (the town of the one-eyed deer...that would be the translation :p) The legend tells that in the times of the indian raids...there was this little deer, injured by one indian arrow...that would come to the outskirts of the village every time there was danger of an invation, to warn people of the coming dangers...

Well, that's a bit of history from this whereabouts...I didn't really say anything about me, I now realise...;)

I can tell you I'm 27 and engaged to be married in October...After 11 years of "dating" it's finally my hour!! :D

I'm an english "language and literature" teacher (that would be the correct tittle) and I love what I do...especially when it comes to literature (hence my subscription to this forum :D )

I love pretty much everything except doing sports (that would make me kind of a geek, right?) Reading is between my outmost favorites, but I also enjoy music, cooking, crafts and watching films and sit-coms ...i'm a huge fun of those...especially old classics like The nanny, Mad about You, Seindfeld and Friends...but the new ones are also great (Lost and Heroes amongs my favs)

Well, i now realise I have extended myself quite a lot and I wouldn't like to bore you to death....

It's great to be part of this amazing site

Welcome to all the newbies...(I guess that includes me, right? ;) )

Hello everyone! I stumbled on this place in my search for another poetry site. One that I used to belong to was disbanded. I've been doing this awhile so I like to see all types of poetry, especially different than mine. I don't know that I have a favorite poet, I keep finding new favorites, the last was Jane Mead.

I'm happy to meet all of you.

I am so glad to have found this forum! I dabble in writing and will post frequently, however I am truly moved and amazed at the poetry of others.

In short, I live in Peoria, Arizona (where it is 112 degrees right now - good time to stay inside and write poetry), I am a divorced mother of two teenage boys with whom I live with, as well as my Great Dane Phoebe and Tory the Black Lab. My day job is working as an Exec Asst for the City, but my passion is art. I draw, paint and make glass beads which I design jewelry with. I am also a psychic and read cards professionally. I also send out a "Gratitude" e-mail weekly to people that subscribe - it is a blurb on my musings of some subject that I am grateful for. I have always felt the need to put my feelings down on paper and I acknowledge and respect the power of the written/spoken word. Words have the power to destroy or heal; invite sadness or joy; and by expressing our thoughts we change a moment in time.

So I am looking forward to reading everyone's work - in a small way it helps me to stay connected to my fellow man by peeking into a part of their world.

Hi, My name is Aaron Disney..(bet you couldn't have guessed that huh?) -

I live in Southern Indiana. I have a 1 and a half year old boy and a wife (Mistie). I work in a plastics factory, and that's pretty much me.

Well, I'm not as seasoned as probably 99% on here at the literature thing. I am a Christian and a Sunday School teacher, so most of my reading has been of the Biblical sort. I've read the Bible through 3 times and I've read several commentaries and such (not necessarily all through).

But I began my first fiction book (since Paddington the Bear as a child) last December. It was "The Hobbit" by Tolkein. I followed that up with "The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy" - also Tolkein. I got the taste for it and decided to go to the library and seek our something I wanted to read. I was drawn to Dickens' David Copperfield. Since then - I've spent the whole year on my new hobby.....Dickens!
I've read Copperfield, Great Expectations, Bleak House, A Christmas Carol, Nicholas Nickleby, Oliver Twist, The Old Curiosity Shop, A Tale of Two Cities, and Hard Times all in 7 months.

Hopefully I'll learn a few things about Dickens and others from listening to you on here.

Hello. I decided to introduce myself before I get on with posting. Here it goes:

I'm am a male sixteen year old with many hobbies and interests. They include sports (ice hockey, soccer, track & field), reading (the classics for the most part), and learning. I occasionally play tabletop wargames to pass the time.

My favorite book is The Hunchback of Notre Dame (also known as Notre-Dame de Paris). Of course, this is subject to change. Currently, I am reading Les Miserables which is a very good book. As some may be able to tell, Hugo is my favorite author at the moment. I think myself as an omnivorous reader, because of my interests that stretch far beyond the realm of fiction. I read anything that has to do with literature, philosophy, and history (military history especially).

Well that's it for now. See you in the forums!

I have been re-reading Howard's End and woke up an hour ago, dreaming in it; and since there's no getting back to sleep, thought to 'google' it, found this site, and joined. A constant and obsessive reader, I'm mostly solitary in this occupation: living on a small island, there's lots of time for reading. I share my house with my two youngest children -- girls, 20 and 11, two cats -- Sushi & Sasha, and Pippin (a puppy). Other things I do are playing guitar & learning to play the harp -- classical guitar and folk, since I'm a child of the 70's (I mean, I was a teenager then) -- and celtic stuff on the harp, because I love it. I've earned an MA in English, taught several years as an adjunct and have been finishing up another MA in history. I should have started a Ph.D. in history a few years ago, but postponed it since I'm plagued by 'incompletes'! I read all kinds of books: classics, urban fantasy, fantasy, mystery. I read poetry as well and adore Shakespeare. Of course, I am writing a novel (two, actually), although I seem to think about it writing more than doing it. Now, I think I'm sleepy enough to get back to sleep. 'night.

Hello all. Officially new here today, but been creeping around the fringes for a couple weeks. Still haven't figured out how to navigate my way through all the forums. LOL!

I'm originally from NW Ontario, Canada....but for now homebase is near London, England, where I'm studying for a BSc in Social Anthropology. I waited till my kids were all grown up and gone before venturing into the world of academia, so it's all still new and very exciting to me. Off for the summer now, and looking forward to lots of museum-going and art gallery-viewing. London has a truly amazing collection of such things. :)

Books and music are my continual companions. Currently I have bookmarks in Dickens' Little Dorrit (going slow....actually a virtual bookmark, cuz I'm reading it on my PalmPilot); and Graham Greene's Brighton Rock (cuz I'm planning a quick day trip to Brighton soon); also have taken bites out of several books on medical anthropology, but I'll try not to bore you with any of those scary details. *grin*

My music tastes are all over the map.... Scanning quickly through my list from today I can see Shania Twain, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Enya, and Diana Krall, just for starters.

Well, I'm off to see if I can get lost in another section of the Network. See y'all!... *waves*

Unfortunately I overlooked this portion of the forum when I first joined. At any rate, I'm 20 years old, and I'm an avid reader and attempting to be an actor in Kansas City. I read a lot of Japanese literature, but don't limit myself to any one country. I'm currently reading "The Ruined Map" by Kobo Abe, and I just finished "Thousand Cranes" by Yasunari Kawabata. Hi all, just like to introduce myself.

I'll go by the name "Vertrauen" because I think my real name is so uninteresting. I'm a 20 year old girl from Germany who loves, loves to read and would be very glad to discuss literature of any sort. I like the novel the most out of all literary genres, but I also enjoy poetry and some drama. I especially like the old Germanic epics such as the Nibelungenlied and the Ring cycle of Wagner. English and Irish literature are a passion of mine as well. And yes, I love Lord of the Rings and Narnia, though I wouldn't say they're my favorite books. I'm working toward a career in journalism (I live in the US now), and have a very adventurous spirit :) I would love to discuss literature with other literary junkies out there, so that's why I joined.

My name is Megan, and I am so excited to be here. I've loved reading my whole life. I've just started the English Lit program at my college, so now I read even more. I also work at a library, so I am around books all the time. I'm so happy to find a message board full of people like me.

Hi, everybody!! Welcome to all the newbies!!

Hello! When I first joined I meant to introduce myself but didn't know where to do it. But now I've found the place.
My (fake) name is Annabel Lee, and I live in the Mid Eastern US, but my heart is with the ocean.
Hobbies (or what I love): reading, writing, music, and traveling.

For starters I'm a very passionate and expressive person. I express myself mostly through writing and music.
Since I express myself through writing, I wish I could do more of it. But for some reason I can't write whenever I want, I have to be particularly inspired about something. I can't just sit down and make myself write a poem.

I love music!!! No matter what I'm doing, I always have music in the back ground. I could probably write a book about my life, and write the soundtrack to go with it.

When it comes to reading I read mostly poetry; my favorite poets being William Wordsworth, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allen Poe, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning... just to name a few. And I try to read as many novels as I can. My favorite books would be Moonrakers Bride, The Count Of Monte Cristo, Pride And Prejudice, Tregaron's Daughter, and The Three Musketeers... just to name a few.

And when it comes to traveling, all I can say is that I wish I could do more of it. I'm a seafarer, living in a landlocked world, surrounded by grass (unless I go to a nasty lake).

Well I think that covers just about everything. Oh wait, I also love studying History and Geography.

HI!

For now I'll go by the name of Beatrix because really, old fashioned English names make me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. I think I may be one of the younger members here (just from what I've read) so apologies if I say something incredibly idiotic. When I find a good fantasy Novel I'll re read it 50 times, however, as there seem to be very few of them out there in the world I usually pick one up read half of it and hide it under my bed in the vain hope that the black hole under there that steals my socks will do the crappy excuse for literature the same courtesy.

When I can't find decent Science fiction or Fantasy novels I usually read, Jane Austen because I'm a teenaged girl and that's what we do. I'm also currently trudging through Les Miserables which has moments of plotted character based happiness and equal amounts of long winded historically based drudgery and because I've been given millions of lectures I'm stubbornly reading the historical bits.

Oh well that's all I really have to say.

Tata!

Hi I'm Elizabeth

I've just joined primarily to talk about Wuthering Heights as I have had an on-again off-again obsession with it since I was little. I was also lucky enough to study it at 3 times during my education as it was on the syllabus for GCSEs (taken at 16), A-Levels (taken at 18) and the first year of my degree (first year taken at 20). It's time to do it again (I'm 34) and this time I'm thinking of doing something creative with it.

So far I have read Juliet Barker's excellent and lengthy biography of the Brontes and next I am going to watch the 90s film, then I shall start reading the novel whilst creating artworks based on it. This time I have no deadlines or exams so it's more fun and I can go down any avenue I want. :)

Apart from that I mainly read science fiction and detective novels as I consider that I paid my dues reading high lit during my education years and rarely feel the need to read anything else. However I have recently started reading the odd poem and enjoying it for the first time. I recommend the London Underground Poem collections as shown in this link http://www.britishcouncil.org/arts-literature-poems-on-the-underground.htm

Hi Caspian! I am sure many like Austen but I have seriously seen some teenaged girls hating Pride and Prejudice as well! :p Oh no, I am not one of them though. Mr. Bennet and Elizabeth Bennet's wit made the novel very interesting I think alongside with some other characters. :D
