Hello all, I'm Rena. I hold a Japanese passport, but ethnically I'm a mix of Japan and China. Been living abroad since 6, going to international schools since 4th grade. Yep, I'm a third culture kid

I read a lot of poetry and fiction, but I only write poetry and essays. My favourite poets are E. E. Cummings, Charles Bukowski, Philip Larkin and Sylvia Plath; my favourite novelists are Alan Hollinghurst and Haruki Murakami. Although I haven't read their works extensively, I also really liked what I got so far from Albert Camus and Ray Bradbury. I'm really picky on the voice of the text, which may explain the shortness of this list...
My favourite playwrights are Tennessee Williams, Sarah Kane and, of course, Shakespeare!

Looking forward to all the discussions :)

Okay, well umm.

I'm Steven, an 11th grade student in California. AP classes across the board.

I break dance, and take interest in swimming, basketball, tennis, and anything physical. Sports are just that much fun to play.

I'm just a casual reader, since I don't have much time for reading. But here's a list of what I am reading.

A Tale of Two Cities (for Academic Decathlon).
Mere Christianity (For myself, and class non-fiction choice).
Candide (for myself).
Slaughter-House Five (same as above).

Seeing as how I'm not as well-read as I'd like to be, hopefully I can get some great recommendations for books.

Thanks for letting me join.

Steven.

Hi everyone. I'm new here and i'm terrible with computers XD

I study English Literature in A2 so getting integrated in a website such as this is great for me.

Although I don't know how to get around this website. How would I search for forums on a specific novel?

Thanks!

Hi. I live very close to city streets. I see despair. I question everything. I belong to the desert. I am the Old Dude, the hack. I am the alien here and everywhere I go. If old and ugly is the best disguise, I am invisible. Poetry holds me down and good poetry slams my face into the sidewalk. I'm not saying that that is a good thing, but it is so rare that it is worthy of note. I am only here a short time but it seems like a lifetime. Hack:alien:

I'm 17, from the UK. Just left school, hated it lol have written loads of stories in my short years, but rarely finished them and they've either decayed in my drawers or sat untouched on my computer lol
But, always up for a laugh and this looked like a good place to share, read new things, and have a laugh.

That's about it (: x

Hello all!

I’m 26, and as a child I loved reading! But after leaving school, education books took over and I never got back into reading for fun. After making a conscious effort this year, I’ve fallen back in love with books. At the moment I’m trying to read classics that I should have read, but haven’t, as well as any others that cross my path. I also actively use bookmooch.com, as I live in Japan and buying new English books all the time is too expensive!!

Looking forward to discussing literature with you all!

Hello

I am Neil from the United Kingdom. I'm 49, father of 3, with long term partner, I am currently reading Wizard of the Crow by Ngugi wa Thiong'o and I'm really enjoying it. Those African writers can sure spin a yarn in a way that English writers seem to have lost the art of.

I went to University quite late in life [in my 30's] and that's where I discovered authors like Ngugi and Soyinka, as well as all the important Russian and Indian writers [we actually did a module on Salman Rushdie!]. It was a mind-broadening experience and I'm really glad I did it.

Anyway, that's enough about me. Hello.

Hello,
I am brand new, and please forgive my awkwardness. I just started a new thread, by mistake I think, asking for help finding a poem, and of course now I'm not sure where the "new thread is," amazing how fast one loses things.

Anyway, if you can find it, anyone, I am quoting a partial poem I found in an 18th century old Bible from an old used bookstore, favorite places I find myself in often, and as a retired English HS teacher, I can't pass up trying to figure out who wrote this, and most importantly the entire content of it, I wrote out what I had from a clipping, looks like from a newspaper, or perhaps magazine of that era, and it has a partial "name" of E. LAD, and a partial title of "It IS N....", then it goes on thus:

To aplogize...
To begin....
To admit error....
To be unselfish. (this is the first line where the "paper" didn't tear into the line and you could actually read the entire sentence with the period at the end)
To take advice.
To be charitable.
To be considerate.
To endure success. (I wrote in the thread that I started that I thought this was charming, as in meaning to humbly enjoy success?, or perhaps not make such a big deal out of success but quietly enjoy it?--just a few random thoughts of this line)
To keep on trying.
To avoid mistakes.
To forgive and forget.
To keep out of the rut.
To make the most of a little.
To maintain a high standard.
To recognize the silver lining.
To shoulder a deserved blame.
BUT IT ALWAYS PAYS. (this last line was all in caps.)

So if anyone has ANY idea where I can find its author and the entire poem, and even better if I can find anymore of this person's work, I would be ever so grateful. I find this whole thing pertinent not only in 18th century era but also in today's time in the 21st century, our century and with our world. What does anyone else think?

Thank you.
Constance

My name is Constance and I live in Las Vegas, NV. I am a retired HS English Teacher, among other things these days ;-). I went to college in my early years and then went back at age 50, to get back into teaching again, this time for the public sector, prior to that I taught for corporations. So I graduated at age 54 with a BA in English and a BA in Communication Studies and began again. Now nearly 10 years later, I like to write and volunteer to teach disabled and sick children in hospital etc. It's nice to be in this welcoming place isn't it?

Hi all....
look forward to meeting many like minded people here. so a little bit about myself, I've just graduated medical school, and in 2010 I start my internship. As such, I have a fundemental interest in philosophy, in particular ethics. I'm currently reading the lectures by Aristotle collectively known by his followers as the 'organon' - I have many questions and idea's and would love some discussion. I have also read, quite a bit of galen, hippocrates and socratese. I'm not big on arguements, but revel in discussion and different opinions, so please if you have any interesting discussion topics, invite me to join in, I would love to be involved.
I also love writing, i'm currently writing a series of short story fantasy/thriller (not unlike HP Lovecrafts 'dream cycle'), I'll probably post some on here for criticism. I've also have a novel undergoing editing for publication... very exciting.
Hope to meet some exciting people and have lots of fun.

 Good morning, Forum.

Between this Network and WikiSource I am getting my hot little hands on books I haven't read in years as well as new companions. Right now I am enjoying Bronte's Villette; I'm 4 chapters in and what a remarkable piece of literature it is, what a remarkable person wrote it. If Charlotte Bronte was a champion of anything, it was that all should endeavour to lead as full a life as possible in their own person, because any companionship at all is a chance encounter to be prized among congenial tempraments if for no other reason than it's uncertainty, however brief. Yes, I sneaked a peek to the end. Tragedy by the bucketful, but not a case of 'alone again, naturally', and I don't see her drying up on a sofa like a Madam Clennam (Little Dorrit) dispensing spleen. After all, she has before her bookends, so to speak, a school and a pensionier, and not just work but meaningful fulfillment between them. Must post again when I've got on a bit.

Oh, yes, an introduction. Hello, some more! I'm from Southern California, married, and have fur folk in the garden who have discovered how to navigate the goldfish pond. Busy with oily things, but will take time to go camping. Love the dessert, love the mountain, don't like things too wet. Oh, well. Enough?

Hello, I signed up here a few months ago, but haven't been around much. I love reading, mostly fantasy but also historical fiction. I also love to write, but am just getting started writing seriously after a career as a scientist and teacher. I'm doing National Novel Writers Month, which is quite an experience. I've finished 37,000 words so far. I've written a few short stories and got one flash fiction piece accepted to an online ezine, so I figure it's a start.

Hello everybody, It's nice that we are getting so many new forum members who share with us their precious views. There should be a place to introduce yourself and say hi; and this is it. :D

Come on and tell us about yourself. :D What are your hobbies? What are your favourite books? And also share with us everything else you would like to tell us about yourself.

Have a nice time browing the wonderful world of books and book-worms! :)

Hello everybody,I am Fat Romeo. My English is not fluent,I am from Brazil.
I do not know why I started receiving the messages from this site on my mail-box,but here I am - it seems fine, really.
My favourite books?Let me think..."Ecce Homo" (Nietzsche)"Outsider"(Colin Wilson),"Werther" (Goethe),"Western Cannon" (Harold Bloom),maybe some Dostoievsky and Oscar Wilde.
I must confess I do not read much frequently.Yesterday I was reading Heidegger with care,to understand well, and I did.
Instead of all,I already wrote two little books, which I had to pay to them be released. Both are very insane.
I spend everyday time thinking about life after death, that is my actual "situation" .Atheism prevails on me,but I saw an angel once.I came here to post a question on the religious forum, but I'll leave for tomorrow,'cause I need to sleep.

Hello everyone! This is the first forum that I've been on, but I decided that if I should pick a forum, this one looks like a good place to start.

I'm a junior in high school, and I love to read! and write, and draw....and right now it seems like the majority of my classmates don't appreciate reading (and if they do, they continuously read vapid, shallow things like Twilight or Maximum Ride, or whatever horrible novels people are reading nowadays).

I'm hoping to find other people who appreciate the good, strong literature of the past. Nobody reades Goethe anymore, or DH Lawrence, or Oscar Wilde, etc, I could go on forever. It seems the old writers have been forgotten and replaced by people like JK Rowling and Stephanie Meyer and other people...

I always love discussing the books that I'm reading, but my friends never consider reading the best stuff (they're all hyped up on Wheel of Time, Pendgragon, and The Wizard Heir).

hopefully I can get in a satisfactory amount of discussion here. sorry for such a long intro...

love, Spyri

Hello!
I'm a university student in Kentucky, and although I'm majoring in dietetics, I love reading. Admittedly, what brought me to this forum was doing a search for information on a paper for class, but once I started looking around, I thought to myself "what a great community! Full of people that share my love for all things literary. I'm actually a little embarassed that my first post was asking for input on a paper, having previously sworn never to be "one of those people".
I'm looking forward to the end of the semester because that means free time for reading, and being online which means I can participate here!

I have a deep passion for literature and language particularly literary theory and enjoy reading and writing, but mainly writing essays. I hope to be active on these forums and participate in discussions.

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen. I found this forum through intentional Google searching. I despise vulgarity in all of its forms and hope to find none here. I read for about two hours everyday while on the subway. Despite all the noise often accompanied with bad smell, this is arguably the best part of my day. I enjoy losing myself in a good read, preferably written centuries ago. I feel like an explorer in that person's mind, a person that, hopefully, exceeded my humble self in wisdom and intelligence.

Unlike many of you here, I've only started reading after graduating from High School. I missed out on many adventurous and "coming of age" tales that I should have been reading as a child and a teenager. However, I'm lucky to have "discovered" the world of literature. It has become the most fulfilling aspect of my life, which is otherwise an uneventful combination of work and studies with a topping of disappointment.

My favorite book is 1984, I've read it many times over and at times find myself opening it up on a random page and immediately being intellectually engrossed by it.

I'm 62 and I've been reading for fifty-seven years. For the first twenty my reading was sporadic and varied--I read more or less anything that came into my view. But as I grew older I began to limit my reading to certain authors that seemed to be worthwhile, that is, so-called "serious world writers."

My view is this: We have a certain amount of time in our life. Why waste it on reading mediocre works. Why not read the best.

I have to say that I have been searching for quite awhile for a site that is devoted to literature, and I've found it in this site. In my humble opinion, this is the best site I have found on the entire net.

Hello everybody, I introduced myself elsewhere on this forum but I don't mind doing it again. At this moment I am the newest member of the Literature Network (I hope more will keep coming after me!) My name is Andrew and I live in Rockford, Illinois, some 100 km outside of Chicago. I am married and have two kids, two cats, and a dog. I am 45 years old and have been interested in literature since I learned to read some 40 years ago. I have books all over the house and it drives my wife nuts. My son is 13 and now seems to be becoming a bit more interested in reading (what do you expect from a 13-year-old?? he just doesn't like to read all that much, but he likes his English teacher at school and therefore gets some encouragement at school.) My daughter just turned six and is learning to read in kindergarten. She has checked out some books from the school library and has read them to me!! I am the proudest dad in the world to see her reading! Oh, and my wife loves books too, but our tastes don't overlap at all! That's it. Ask me about my favorite books and I'll talk for hours.

Hi everyone. I am Roger, and I am Belgian. I found this forum whilst searching for a forum to discuss Goethe. As I am not only interested in Goethe, but, to summarize, in what is used to be called the "great classics" (like, apart from Goethe, f.e. Dostojewski, Tolstoi, Camus, Shakespeare, I did not hesitate to register , as I am pretty sure to find more than enough here.

Hello! I'm from Oxford, UK and this is my first post so I thought I'd better stop by and say hello. I'm a big fan of Victorian novels especially sensation novels by M.E Braddon and Wilkie Collins. My favourite book is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte :) I'm looking forward to getting to know some more people and talking about books!

Hello everyone. I came across this site yesterday when I was browsing on-line. I'm English, mid-50s, transplanted to Wales for more than 20 years now, but planning to shift back next year. Total bibliophile - I cannot live without books. Fortunately we live within striking distance of Hay-on-Wye, famous for its bookshops, so make regular visits there and rarely come away empty-handed.

Thomas Hardy is my favourite author, and I love poetry too, especially the Dymock/Georgian poets.

Hello there. I'm Luke and I'm new here! I'm 24 and I've recently got myself back into writing and found this place through a random Google search to try find places with like-minded people to share stories with.
I wrote 2 short stories about a year ago for competitions and then didn't do anymore until recently. Just finished another and am planning my next story, so I'll post some soon for people to read. Will be nice to get some feedback! :)

Hello all-
I've been a member of many writing discussion forums, and though I enjoy them all, I want to branch out and meet some more people.

I began writing my sophomore year of undergrad study. At the time I was seeking a degree in fine arts. For various reasons, I stopped. Then, I fell in with the lit crowd. Since then I've had plenty of stories published. I've studied with some fantastic authors (Peter Rock and Craig Clevenger). And I've been to a couple Association of Writer’s and Writing Programs (AWP) conferences which have allowed me the opportunity to embarrass myself in front of many important people. I'll be going again in April 2010 in Denver. Anyone else?

My first fiction chapbook, called Charactered Pieces (http://www.outsiderwriters.org/publications/caleb-j-rosss-charactered-pieces), was recently released from OW Press. People seem to really like it. I'm happy.

I'm excited to be here.

Hey, Virgil.

I loved the introduction! Thanks for sharing.

I particularly liked your quote... I woke up this morning with a quote on my mind that is somewhat similiar (I think)... the backdrop is with regard to overcoming trauma in life: learn to be your own hero. It's along the lines of self-preservation.

Anyway... take care,

Hi,

I just became a member this evening.

I recently purchased on ebay a leather bound copy of Moby Dick and did a google search to see what people thought of this "classic" that I have never read. I came across this site and forum and decided to join.

I am a former English teacher, but somehow I have missed some of the classics along the way. I intend to read some of the classics of literature, although I am handcuffed by only being fluent in english. I've read most of Shakespeare, although I could certainly see going back and rereading some of those now that I have more experience and perhaps a little wisdom.

I've greatly enjoyed reading many of your posts. It's stimulating conversation, and I intend to learn much here and have some healthy differences of opinion (and some healthy agreement) with many of you.

Now off to update my profile...

Um.. hello.

I stumbled on this forum while I was surfing on net, and was interested in one of the posts.

Well, first, about me. I'm female, with age around 20 plus-or-less, and currently living on Northern Hemisphere (so it's winter here..). And no, my first language is not English, so forgive me if I make grammatical mistakes here and there.

I adore vanilla, as spice or fragrance or flower, and I love literature, hence my nickname's VanillaInk.

Since I like literature, I was immediately attracted and registered as a member once I saw the title of the forum, knowing there are also others with same interest as mine in this forum. I hope to stay around long and enjoy the time I'll spend here with all of you guys!

Hello everyone and nice to meet you all! I just stumbled upon this forum whilst looking for commentary on God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. I am 17 years old and have been a very "heavy" reader since around fifth grade. I like a wide variety of genres and authors, and I am very much looking forward to finding some fantastic recommendations/discussion. I'm generally quite the tentative poster when it comes to these types of forums so please treat me kindly if I ever venture to post alongside any of you!

Personal tidbits:
I am a Minnesota gal, youngest in my family, and currently a senior in Highschool. I have been recently accepted to college (Huzzah!) where I plan on double majoring in English Literature, and (Most Likely) Creative Writing. Alongside that I am going to minor in Japanese Studies. I have been teaching myself Japanese for about 4 years and would someday like to teach English in Japan. :] My other hobbies include sketching, watching Anime, and playing Video Games.

Hi, I am excited to join this forum. I have been missing literature discussions ever since I graduated from college last spring. Most of all, I miss writing about literature.

Writers I truly love whom I have read recently: James Cain, Tao Lin, Raymond Carver, William Blake, Chris Kraus. I look forward to learning more about what I like.

OK, I'll keep this short. Talk later.

Hello! I first read 1984 as a sophmore in high school, back in the last century. Nothing , I believe, has ever had such an impact on my thinking before or since! I see 1984 as the most important novel yet written! Nothing that has transpired in all those years, has really caught me by unawares, because it was all foretold! Anyway, why it took me so long to look for and find this forum, I can't say. Maybe the time was right!

I look forward to spending many long hours with you!

Hello to whoever ends up reading this.
What to say? I'm Leila, I live in Seoul. The why and how behind that aren't important. I can't say that I'm an avid reader, but I do enjoy reading quite a lot. In general, my generation really does not read enough literature, and if I just left it at that, it would be a vast understatement, but I will so it is. When I was a little kid, I loved to read and indeed, I used to read a lot. But in the past few years I've hardly read any books at all. Doing the IB now in Junior year and having to read many novels for IBH English made me realize how much I've missed it. So I've started reading lots more outside of class, and I'm realizing just how much I've missed out on in the past few years of non-reading that I went through. It really pisses me off, I feel like I've been robbed of something vital, though it was my own fault.
I love short stories, I love Albert Camus, and I love coffee. I love theatre, and I love reading plays. I design and build and stage manage; I aspire to direct someday. In my spare time, I draw, paint, work at the theatre at my school, and create stopmotion films. I still don't read enough, but I read much more than I used to, and I'd really like to discuss what I read. The problem is, I don't know anyone in real life who wants to do that. So hopefully I can fulfill that desire here. Oh, the wonders of the internet.

Hi all, Happy New Year. Ancient male (50+); have always read lots and will try all types of book. Will give up at about page 50, occasionally, but usually persevere to end. Top book is Jane Eyre, which I read for first time only a year or two ago, having seen or heard several versions on TV and Radio. A throwaway remark by a friend this summer got me researching Irish History, and a subsequent coincidence has got me writing a novel, my first serious writing for 30 years (If you don't include orders for military operations which are of course serious, but hardly literature!) Bernard Cornwell and Allan Mallinson had better look out.

Hey, nice to meet you.

I'm Amel, a 29 year-old native Indonesian working as an English instructor in Jakarta, Indonesia. I majored in English, with a thesis on a Harry Potter novel. My focus in college was fiction and children's literature. But in the past two years, I've been studying and writing poetry. As I'm leisurely compiling a (hopefully cool) portfolio to apply for an MFA degree, I need to find online friends who also write poems/fiction, or any type of creative writing. We can exchange ideas and comment on each other's works.

I've been reading novels since 1988, and journaling since 1991. Lately I don't read much fiction, but am exploring new poems and poets every single day. My favorite poets are Dorothy Parker, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, and DH Lawrence. The last novel I read was The Little Prince in its English translation. It's very intriguing as children's literature. I love the slow-moving yet thought-provoking narration and conversations.

Message me if you want to correspond. Thankyouuuu~

Here it goes...
I’m a sailor in the US Navy and I occupy myself with a vast assortment of books. I am always looking for some odd, peculiar, or arcane bit of literature. I hope to find people here that are naturally or artificially inclined toward literature and its extension beyond an 8th grade homework assignment.

I am well read enough to hold my own and indeed dominate any discussion with my peers, so I seek out new targets for my poorly articulated and rudimentary forms of expression.

If you didn't need a dictionary, then you're who I'm hoping to find.

The Pilgrim,

Hi. *Glances around* I'm new as of today :D

bjb
01-03-2010, 08:03 PM
I was born and raised in South Vancouver, British Columbia in 1961, 3rd of 4 children, 2 older sisters and our youngest brother. Vancouver was a small, suburb of a small town, with many local conveniences and a strong sense of family and community. My parents are of Scottish and English origin and some of my ancestors settled in America in the late 1800’s. My great-grandfather continued his migrations, settled in South Vancouver, and ran a chicken and pig farm. They often lived in extreme poverty and eventually, this way of life passed as the city grew and they went into trucking.
My father also ended up in a trucking career, as his health did not allow his dream of being a commercial pilot. My mother was traditional, like most Mom’s then, and stayed home with us; eventually she went to work part-time to give us extras. Although they too struggled, it got better over time and we were very loved and satisfied children. We sadly lost father in 1996.
I am single, with no children and have many creative talents. Even with my parents' economic struggles, they somehow managed to give us more. I was a very happy, successful highland dancer and played the Scottish bagpipes. My family was noisy, musical and from the union trades which in our time were often without work and never without tensions. I found myself different even amongst my own, so I too spent many hours alone, my favourite activity being my diary or solitaire. Other favourite times were spent crocheting, walking or spending time by the Pacific Ocean. My favourite family time was always with my nieces and nephews, often reading to them in their early years or taking them for walks.
My future is hopeful of developing my creative talents, especially writing and painting. I hope to retire gracefully with enough money and health for some travel and some pets.

I look forward to meeting everyone - bjb

Hi Virgil, i'm bjb. I just joined today. I am not as well read as most, but have read some of the classics. I'm glad there is someone I can go to on English lit. I studied western historic dance for a while; dances and music of the 15th and 16th century. It was really interesting.

I thought about going into landscape architecture but I don't understand weight. A friend from Australia tried to tell me during a move that the glass table, with brass legs wouldn't hold me, even though it held my heavy T.V. up for years. Of course, I fell through. I told him not to tell me "i told you so" but I laughed so hard that my bum-bum got stuck in the brass support. He couldn't spit the "i told you so" out because he was laughing too hard as well. Best I still to writing, dancing and painting.

See you around the boards - bjb

Hello. I'm here 'cause I like novels. I like to discuss them and just goof off around a bit. I'm currently going through Ulysses by James Joyce for the 3rd time. It's my life's ambition to be able to err, understand it.

Hello all, my name is Maximus and I am simply happy to have found this wonderful forum. I love learning, reading, and hiking. What else does one need in life! I'll keep it short, but I guess everyone posts their favorite book, so i will not be the exception. I know it is probably cliche, but my honest-to-god favorite book is The Grapes of Wrath.

Greetings from the currently freezing state of Maine, I'm 30 years old and obviously this is my first post. I've been passively viewing these forums for at least a year but have just now decided to become an active member. Anyway, currently I'm reading For Whom The Bell Tolls (Hemingway), In Cold Blood (Capote) Ivanhoe (Scott), Essay On Man and Other Poems (Pope), The Autobiography & Other Writings (Benjamin Franklin) and what ever else I find intriguing. The last three novels and one novella that I have read are Moby Dick (Melville), Hard Times (Dickens), House of Meetings (Amis) and The Immoralist (Gide) as well as some short stories by Poe, David Sedaris and various other narrative poems and short stories. If I had to pick a favorite author it would probably be Dickens (A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield, Hard Times, Great Expectations and Oliver Twist are probably the most engrossing novels I've ever had the pleasure to read). I have Bleak House waiting for me but I want to clear my plate of the other novels I'm reading and read the Dickens when I'm not in the midst of a half dozen or so other novels. I'll finish up this post (before I start rambling) by saying that I look forward to sharing ideas and opinions with others who have the same passion.

Just found the site this PM. Not prepared to wax eloquent or otherwise. It is a wonderful site, however, where I don't expect to be driven crazy by ill-uses of personal possessive pronouns. Furthermore, I am hopeful that all with whom I may have exchanges will agree with my own little aphorism: Keep English Plain and Good, with Good, Plain English. Oh, one other thing: “I think it good plain English, without fraud, To call a spade a spade, a bawd a bawd”-John Taylor

A general perusal of literature links led me to this site and it looks fantastic! I currently reside in the climate utopia of Hawaii and my major hobby, other than hiking tropical trails is, of course, reading. I am an ardent fan of British literature, but read pretty much all classical lit. I am currently about to wade into 'Ulysses' for the second time.

And that, as they say, is that. I look forward to hanging out, etc., etc. :)

Hello:

I'll start by saying that I'm new here and new at writing, but I will hopefully be able to post a short story soon. I'm really looking forward to honest critiques and healthy discussion, and from what I've read on this forum so far, it looks like I've come to the right place.

Take care

Hello everybody (I am yet to virtually meet you)

I registered on this forum because I
a) have been deeply in love with English and American literature
b) am currently studying for my university entrance exams and need as much information and experience as possible
c) rarely find people as keen on literature as I am in the real life
d) am not used to making arguments, discussing etc. and I hope this could help me...
e) hope I could be helpful myself later on

Some of my favourite books, writers etc. include F.M.Dostoyevski, Walt Whitman, the Bloomsbury Group + English Modernism, J.P.Sartre, F. Kafka, Zadie Smith, Edna O'Brien, A. de Saint-Exupéry, E.A.Poe (The Sleeper!), J.Keats and many many others.
But most of all..well, if there's another Virginia Woolf freak, feel free to reply... :p

Well...feel free to reply anyway

Hi all! I actually found this place while studying for my exams (my english one in fact), which is probably one of the only positive attributes of studying I've encountered so far. I'm known as the bookworm in my group of friends and I love discussing literature, especially getting titles of books I haven't read yet! I hope to take part in the 'book club' here and probably read some short stories, maybe post some of my own! I used to write fanfiction (for those of you who are aware of the world of fanficiton, it's an intense place :P) but I haven't written a short story in a while.
So that's about it! Feel free to talk to me, I love new friends! :)

PS; You can call me Emma.

hello everybody,
I am writing a book - towards reality- or something similar.
One subject I would like to hear comments on is Global language. I am proposing to call it "Earthish". Based on modern English but including words and expressions from every other language which do not translate precisely enough.
The text would a selection of characters from several languages, chosen for clarity in straight, italic, and reverse italic without dots or tees. There will be no carriage returns. Lines would be written left to right for the first line then alternating right to left, left to right, and so on. words will be separated by midline dots no spaces and paragraphs will have two midline dots. Number separaters will be midline commas (maybe). hyphens will not be necessary, the dot separators will keep the word together.
I know that it might seem very congested with hardly any spacing visible, but it will be very compact and quicker to read and write.
Resting the eyes maybe a problem but we do not know that yet.

Some open mimded comments please.
Cheers Vanon:angel:.

I have loved to read all my life. My favorite authors are Grace S. Richmond, Gene Stratton Porter, Louisa May Alcott, Harold Bell Wright, James Oliver Curwood, and Zane Grey; these are the authors that wrote the books that were my friends as I grew up and I still read them. I enjoy Lilian Jackson Braun, Rita Mae Brown, Susan Wittig Albert and Jan Karon, too. The list goes on and on. I love music, and, at my age, I still take voice lessons and sing for church. Life is good. My mother always told me to furnish my mind by reading good books and I think that she is right.

Hello everyone.
I suppose I should introduce myself. :yawnb:

My name is Sami. First and foremost, I am a musician. Music ignites something in me, it's hard to put into words. I'm more likely to write lyrics than anything else, but initially I'd started out writing poetry and fiction.
I wouldn't say that I'm the most amazing author out there, but I do enjoy getting lost in my own storyline from time to time. I mostly write short stories, a few chapters at most.
Lately I find myself writing without such a simple beginning, middle, and end. More like a page torn out of a book; just a scene, a captured moment.

Anyway, I joined this site because I have one piece that I'd really like opinions on. Constructive criticism is the way to go.

So, thanks for reading this. Hopefully I didn't bore you too much. I'm off to explore the site.

Hallo everybody, politeness and good manners demand that I say hi to you all, which I'll gladly do. My name is Dieter, I am Austrian, not quite so young, not quite so old (37 as a matter of fact) and an eager reader and writer. If you want to know what I'm talking aboout in my work-in-progress novel, check out my weblog (you can find it in my Profile section). Good to be here, good to be with you.
As an Austrian, I'd like to stress the important input of Austrians to World literature. I'd like to praise Joseph Roth, a 20th century writer I like very much for his deep insight into human nature and his sharp analysis of the end of the Habsburg monarchy and the dismantlement of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

Chello everyone! My name is Phil, I just found this website not that long ago and I'm pretty new here but I love it. I started writing when I was 13, a lot of my work got banned from school and got me in constant trouble but it never stopped me. I live in the valley in California and play in a punk rock band here, needless to say I love to write and play music. I dabble in a lot of arts and aside from the written ones I do a lot of drawing. I am an anarchist and a feminist, so I'm very political but I don't hold my beliefs against those of others. I am twenty years old and running out of things to put in my introduction lol.

Hello! I joined this site because, after reading Moby-Dick, I had a strong desire to both read people's interpretations and discuss my own. I came across this site, and seeing that it covered a wide range of literature, I decided that it would be a great place to visit.

It's nice to meet everyone.

Hi

I am dutifully following the request to post an intro . Wasn't a stellar writer in my earlier days. Then I met a girl who had scored 800 in her English SAT. I decided to retake the test to impress her, and scored 800 in the English section.:cornut: I ran to the telephone to tell her the news only to find she had disconnected her phone:incazzato:
Four years later I sent the test results to my old high school headmaster, and presto I got paying work in the writing profession while the letter was en route. Have been writing ever since.
I joined to share a short story -my spoof on the Google Local.

If the smiley icons I put in this piece don't work just use your imagination!

I'm Raabia Hirani, final year student of BS in English Literature at University of Karachi, Pakistan.
At present I'm doing research in sufism/mysticism as result of existentialism in contemporary literature.
I'm easily distracted, mainly because I'm interested in pretty much everything. An ideal life for is one in which there is no road not taken. Which, as I've learnt, is not a very practical approach to life. Well I'm searching and learning. Thats about it

Greetings to everyone.
I live in Kathmandu, Nepal. Most of you never heard of it, as it always has been overshadowed by India. Well, I am currently studying Language and Literature as a subject in my A Levels course. I joined this forum to improve my literary skills and to share my knowledge in context to the literary world. To be honest, I am not as skillful when it comes to writing. My initial plan was to join an RPG forum, but that required spending my precious time reading mangas (which I am no where near crazy about).
I am a huge "MUSIC" fan: I listen to all genres of music and I love reading sci-fi books. I haven't taken Psychology as a subject in my A levels course, but I find myself in the library reading the Psychology textbook. I am keen in making new friends within this forum.

Hi...

Greetings to all u new litterature network fans and lovers out there! :seeya:

My name is Paris and I'm a teacher from London...I love reading anything from poetry to autobiographical works..I also love to write but do so in short bursts (wat I mean is..I'm a lazy writer)..I have chosen the character 'stitch' as my avatar as I feel he represents my personality to some extent..'Stitch' is the name of the genetic experiment 626..a fictional alien originally created to cause chaos across the galaxy..(I sometimes wonder if I myself am a fictional character..as for his ability to cause chaos..(well the less said about that the better)..he is marked by his short temper and mischievous behavior traits that endear him to his friend Lilo..who adopted him as her puppy dog...although I will not admit to being anyone's pet..it has been suggested that that may well be what I need in order to 'find some sanity'..

I am looking forward to some serious conversation..a little humour..debate and insightful reading..(or and some playful fun)... :iamwithstupid:

Hello,

I registered here because I am starting my PhD in English literature in three or four months. For the time being, I am teaching college in an asian country. My school is in a rural area, so I am a bit isolated and have lots of time to read and think, but no one to discuss my ideas with. My subject is tentatively entitled 'Silence in Austen, Eliot and Woolf.' I am interested in the way things are not said in these three authors, and how censure and censorhsip function from regency England to WW2.

Call me Leo.

I should have taken Classics and English Lit when I was at school, my teachers said so, my parents said so, but my friends took science subjects, so I took science subjects. I ended up at the bottom of the sea, in the Navy; literally and spiritually, a pretty low period in my life.

Resurfacing, I realised that I had taken my life in the wrong direction, and there wasn't much chance to go back, as I have four kids; I have to feed their mouths, not my ego. So I have decided to further my literary ambitions in an amateur capacity.

I especially love Ancient Greek material --philosophy is fascinating to me-- but I also love the modern novel.

I hope to make friends here that I can consult for opinions about what I am reading, so that I can annotate with more professionalism, and I intend to take formal qualifications in Latin and Ancient Greek over the next few years so that I may join the esteemed ranks of those who call themselves Classicists.

I love you all.

I'm never sure how to start these things...

Anyway, I stumbled on this site a couple of weeks ago. I was looking up a poem from WWI, and one click led to another. Next thing I knew, I'd found one of my favorite stories from grammar school: The Open Window.

I've been steadily working my way through the list of Saki works, and will move on to reintroduce myself to O Henry.

My hobbies... Well, my husband and I are very "into" self-sufficiency, and "living simply so that others may simply live" (thank you, Elizabeth Seton for saying it so succinctly).

I have a rather large garden, we're working to restore a dilapidated orchard, and we raise chickens, turkeys, ducks, rabbits, and goats.

Old Jeep restoration is a passion of mine. Sewing is fun, reading is better.

So now I'm going to go and answer the question that prompted my joining your membership here, then I will continue reading Saki!

Hello! I stumbled upon this site just this afternoon and thought I'd participate. My favorite authors are brilliant people like C.S.Lewis and J.R.R.Tolkien, but I'll read just about anything.

Hello every one- well am not good at describing my self- I was wondering that may be I could find some interesting discussions at this magical but dirty wired-box and it was fortunate for me to stumble at this site.

I have a BA degree in British literature- though my mouth is not native to that land. I would ardently read what people think about books and only then could I feel the true sense of the book. Yet one thing I hate more than formalism is a critic who writes for the benefit of his own ***.:banghead:

With out a doubt, my beloved writers are the Russians- in their silver age- F. Dostoevsky, N. Gogol, and Chekhov. I cannot deny the talents of D.H Lawrence and Hemingway too.

I'm sixty yo, a professional in the healthcare industry. Don't, please get me
going on it. (I consume it and pay for it just like everyone else.) I spend a lot of time reading, especially since my sons have grown up. I like to garden,
herbs and vegetables, berries. My friends know me as Pavel Dmitrievich.
I live in the NE US. I'm quite glad to feel accompanied by others attached
to literature.

Hello All,
Big O here, from the great state of Tennessee. This looks like a great site. I have always loved literture, though I confess I don't usually read fiction. I'm taking a literature course now, so have of necessity been spending more time with it. Someone caught my ear with a comment about Swift's A Modest Proposal. His brand of satire can be shocking, it takes some getting used to. Pretty ballsy social/political commentary for the era. Swift almost got his neck stretched for that little story. No wonder he was so beloved by his people.
Are you folk familiar with Thurber? I'm getting to read The Secret Life of Walter Mitty for the first time.
Pleasure to be here,
BigO

Bonjour, tout le monde! Je m'appelle Bella Rose!

Hey, I'm BellaRose, and I'm currently working on a paper for the French Revolution likening Madame Guillotine to a monarch in several different ways, with one twist: she united and "equalized" the people of France. I love studying history, especially the French Revolution, and the Romantic Period.
My favorite book as of right now is A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, but I am starting Paradise Lost, so that may become my new favorite.

I'm a classical and romantic music nerd, I'm in two orchestras in which I play the violin, and I do ballet and voice lessons, as well as ice-skating. I aspire to become an opera-singer one day, as well as a Languages teacher for under-privileged students. Currently in my spare time, I like to dissect and analyze poetry by Shakespeare, like his sonnets.

Oh yes, and I ADORE the phantom of the opera in all shapes and forms (or most shapes and forms)

Since I blindly skipped this before, I'm copying and pasting what I said in my intro thread (haha).

---------------------------

So, first of all - a big HELLO to this active community.

After a year of not investing my time in short story writing, I have found myself to be terribly rusty. I'm actually quite disappointed in myself for having temporarily abandoned my dream of short story writing as I didn't have enough time or a willing audience that would critique my work.

Well - having said that, I will initially post my old work (some pieces I've written during my years in high school), and eventually post new pieces around mid-March perhaps? (I also write poetry too!)

Anyway, as for favorite authors, I really do look up to Neil Gaiman for his vivid imagination. Anyone else who shares a similar interest?

hello, everyone, nice to see you here, this is virginia, a newbie for this forum, also for literature. I like reading, but english is not my first language, so it's difficult for me to understand it well. So at present, i just read some fictions which have Chinese version and i've read it before, it could help me understand the English version. I like Jane Austin's work Pride and Prejudice, I was attracted by her languange, so beatiful, elegant and charming. but my favorite book is Gone with the wind, i was admired Scarlett
deeply. Never give up, everything will past and life will go on.

Hello, my name is Shari and I found your site because I have for many years now been on a search for a certain poem that I just can't seem to find anywhere. My Father-in-law recited it to me on his death bed; it was the last words he spoke. It was amazing; he recited this whole long poem from memory when he was literally an hour or so from death. The power poetry has over our souls struck me yet again in my life. My Grandmother recited the Village Black Smith at her last. But Pop's poem I had never heard before which in itself was unusual I was teethed on poetry. I'm hoping someone here can help me identify it; all that I have is the first line. "I dream of a house, with a red top roof, and roses around the door, and a canary to sing in the sunlight, and a golden haired child on the floor".

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and it is a pleasure to meet you even if my search is not fulfilled here I like the site and will visit often.

Hello!
My name is Irina. The purpose of being here is to develop my literary knowledge and of course meet new intersting people.
I'm a high school student, and I'm currently applying to University. English is not my first language, my mother tongue is Russian.
I adore literature since my early childhood. My favourite book character is Holden Caulfield. I suppose each teenager can find some similarities with him.
One of my biggest passions is writing. I write poems mostly, but I'm going to try to write prose either. It was only a hobby, but now I plan to make it a part of my occupation.
Thank you for your attention.
