Heyyy all, just registered to this site, looking forward to interesting discussions here and participating in them. My favorite literature is Sub-continental, may be because I belong to this place and plainly showing favoritism - winks. However, I read O. Henry in my last semester (undergrad lit. student) and quite liked his writing style and the way he puts a twist at the end of his stories, a very pleasing tinge. Am I going into literature talk? Ok, I think only saying Hi would suffice for this thread.
Cheers!

Hello everyone! I'm new and I've just signed up to share my ideas and to ask you guys for some help and feedback perhaps! I'm thinking that writing alone isn't the best way, so for an audience to read my stuff, then maybe I can improve what I do write!
I look forward to reading everyone's fiction and I hope you enjoy reading mine too!

Nice to be here.
My Mom died 4 weeks ago and we were best friends AND lived together so I'm feeling rather at odds. Don't know what to do with myself now that I don't have anyone to chat with. We were both avid readers and I'm a writer too. So I thought I would come here and see what everyone else is writing and perhaps have some intelligent conversations. That seems to be lacking at FaceBook. Over at FB it seems like a ticker of information goes by but I never get down to what a person is thinking and feeling. So I'm looking forward to reading what you have to say.

Hello,
I found this site with a search for online reading clubs. After registering I saw the recommendation to make a first post to introduce yourself & it seemed like a good idea. I live in the USA, work full-time & teach classes part time at the local college.
The books that I like to read are philosophical type novels, Dostoevsky, Hesse, Mann, Simone De Beauvoir, etc. Currently I have just started with "The Idiot". Many times I found myself thinking about an idea or a situation from whatever current book I'm reading at the time and I have thoughts of how nice it would be to discuss that. Being in the technology field I don't find people that share my interest in these books & ideas; and my family is not much interested either. Although there have been ample opportunity to discuss "The Jersey Shore" or "The Kardashians" with my kids but I have managed to resist that temptation! I tease them about how those shows kill brain cells & they tease me about my books being for nerds. Actually they are very smart; I still can’t understand how they can watch this. Maybe it’s like a gory car accident.
I am happy to find the site. Hopefully I would like to find a small group to choose a book to read and discuss from beginning to end.

Hi, everyone, I am Zoe. I am not an English speaker. I really like literature but I can’t express my feelings in English fluently after reading because my English is so poor. I always keep silent when I need to speak in public. It makes me go crazy. I try to say more and know more so I come here. I hope I could get some courage and overcome my shortcoming. Thank you.

Hello, everyone. My name's Intelligence, but a lot of people call me Intel for short. I'm in high school, and I spend a lot of my time with some form of art. I greatly enjoy writing and martial arts, but my favorite pastime and art is actually music. I've played the flute and other assorted wind instruments for a long time now. It's worth noting that I enjoy video games as much as the next guy. Dark Souls has got to be my favorite, but I love the Legend of Zelda series dearly. I draw inspiration from many of the games I play to shape my writing and music, which I think creates a pretty nice style that likes to do what it wants rather than what I try to tell it to do. I came here because I wanted to actually develop my writing ability, so I figured having people other than me critique it would be helpful. Maybe this way I'll stop abandoning so many good ideas and continuing with so many bad ones.

Hi, everyone, I just signed up and this is, of course, my first post. My name is Valentina Cano and I am a poet with a brand new chapbook out in the world as of two days ago. It's always awkward to talk about oneself like this but here I go: I am an avid reader and writer, a classical singer, an animal lover who has a lot of pets (including five spoiled snakes) and an amateur quilter. I'm originally from Uruguay but moved to Miami when I was nine and have remained here until now. The Chudney Agency represents my fiction manuscripts and my poetry has appeared in numerous literary magazines.
That's enough about me. I hope to get to know some of you better!

Hi everyone. I have been writing for quite some time, but I've never shared any of my work with anyone. I feel as though it may be time to rememdy that. My favorite contemporary writer is Kurt Vonnegut, but I'm also a huge fan of the classics, such as Robert Louis Stevenson, and Alexandre Dumas.

Hi guys !
I'm French. I'm a second year in English and Japanese at college in Paris. I'll turn 20 in November. I've been studying English for a while now and I really love this language. The first novel I ever read in English was "The other side of truth" by Naidoo when I was a last year at high school and it was for a class (I was in the literary section and we had to pick a speciality and I picked English). As I'm studying English I'm reading some novels for literature classes. But I've recently decided that I should read novels in English as a personal extent now just it be for college but also if I want my English to improve. I started two days ago and I just finished my first novel today ; The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Chbosky which was unexpectedly easy to read. In order to motivate myself to read novels in English, I decided to find a forum about novels and here I am! I apologize in advance if my English sometimes sounds weird.

Hello Everyone,
I'm a teen who's just interested in writing and reading. I don't have the slightest tidbit of talent in writing but I sort of enjoy it nevertheless. I really like Isaac Newton with the little I know about him. Currently I am studying alchemy. I love drawing. And I am learning Latin and hope to spread my language to French and Spanish.
But most importantly, the reason I joined is to learn. I love and am entirely opened to learning knew things. I hope everyone will feel more then welcomed to criticize my work when I post.

Well, the first post I read when comming here to introduce myself was Virgil's, and I was stunned, because he went through a very similar process as the one I am going through.
First things first: I am Brazilian, and though I always loved to read and write, it was always a hobby, never something I wanted to dedicate my life to. When deciding what to do in college, I thought about Letters (as we call the Language and Literature major here in Brazil), but went to engineering. Years and years later, married to a remarkable woman who is taking Letters as her major, by her sugestion, I read "The Devil to Pay in Backlands (O Grande Sertão: Veredas)" by João Guimarães Rosa. And this book stirred something within me, a potential never seized, something asleep since High School... And there, I finally understood what literature was about.
But I followed reading mass "literature" like Bernard Cornwell, A Song of Ice and Fire... Until, this year, once again by my wife's sugestion, I read Jean Paul Sartre's "The Age of Reason". And that slumbering Thing within me, already growing since "The Devil to Pay in Backlands", finally broke free. I wanted to devour true Literature, the work of the great authors, and so I dove into more of João Guimarães Rosa, Clarice Lispector, and other great names of Brazilian Literature.
Now, in less than a month away from my graduation in engineering, I am already set: I will begin college again, but this time in the Letters major! My aim is to gradually change fields, and in some years, teach and research literature. And I already have a course kind of set: Compared Literature.
I am curious to know American Literature in more depth, because, with the exception of Poe, all I have read so far is so... Massified. Maybe I didn't get to read the right authors, but the feeling I have is that American Literature as a whole became comercial, descriptions of the scenes of a Hollywood movie and not Literature per se. I will try Hemingway soon, but in a quick stroll by "For Whom the Bell Tolls", I didn't find that which I look for in a book.
So, I intend to study Compared Literature, focusing on Brazilian x American Literature and in a broader aspect, Latin Languages x German Languages Literature.
Well, so that's is it! I hope to have great discussions here with you guys, and I am sorry if I have offended anyone by my views on American Literature.

I'm new here of course, and somewhat shy at first. I've been a writer for ages but am just now getting my MFA in creative writing at this late stage in my life! And I love it. I've been many things in my life, an accomplished artist when I was younger but then life has its ways of throwing curve balls and I became a successful businesswoman out of necessity, not choice. Now I have the luxury of time to take myself and writing seriously. Loving every minute of the journey!

Hello everyone, as instructed by the site and being programmed to follow instructions implicitly, in compliance with said instructions I am therefore introducing myself. Hi, I'm Robert, and I now find myself being able to do as I've always wanted to do, write and write and write. Now that my children have grown, home, medical insurance, a livable income being provided for, and no longer chained to the vicious cycle of monotonous day to day wage earning, I find myself in the long hoped for period of my life that is considered golden, at the ripe old age of 56, still of sound mind and body, what are the Vegas odds on that? But in this time of blogging Google crazy information overload, information overload of course being an oxymoron, I find myself here, as I was looking for an obscure poem by Aldous Huxley and was directed to your literature rich site, where I struck gold! Hello! I haven't really written anything since leaving school 13 years ago. I used to write short stories obsessively as a child and I'm not entirely sure why I stopped. Anyway, I've decided to have a go at it again, not that I expect to be any good at it, it's just for the enjoyment. My recent attempts have been pretty bad. In fact, really bad. I find myself dozing off just reading some of them back. What I'm looking for is an opinion or two on exactly why they are bad. It's not that I expect to be able to master writing having been away from it for so long, it's just that I believe you get more enjoyment out of anything the more proficent you become. It's strictly a hobby at the moment though. If I improve a great deal, I might start submitting the odd piece to magaines and such, but that's about the limit of my ambition. Glad to be here!

I am an enigma in a geographical area of acute conformity to specific cultural attitudes that baffle me and consequently cause me confusion and resentment. Everyone says Howdy and expects you to reply in a likewise fashion. There are no secrets on the surface everyone appears to be like everyone else; open, honest, practical, earnest, Believing in a Fearful God that they actually see and raise their arms to, simple and just plain folk.
I on the other hand don't speak to strangers and never say Howdy. I have lots of secrets and never admit to seeing anything I don't see but still have a certainty that I will sometime actually see the Images and Visions that others say they see NOW because I truthfully said I did not see them THEN. I still won't be saying Howdy or telling anyone of the Things I expect others to see because now I too see them.

well jayat it certainly sounds like you're a reader are you familure with don gonzalo de berceo? I was wandering around a book store here in new orleans and came across this old book, milagros de nuestra senora ,in the discount section and i started reading it i love it even thou some of it is written in a old spanih dialect i would say?? Please correct me!!
I'm not Jayat but let me add something to his answer. Gonzalo de Berceo is traditionally considered the first writer to be known by his name in Old Spanish. More strictly, he wrote in Old Riojan, a transitional variety between Old Castilian (Spanish proper) and Old Aragonese, using Basque words from time to time as the region spoke Basque in those times too. (Basque is an old language, completely unrelated to the other seven languages of Spain, which are Romance)

Hello there :)
I am absolutely terrible with introductions, but I'll do my best! Here it goes...
My name is Amanda and I currently live in Tunnel Hill, GA, but I will be moving to Atlanta soon.
I am about to start my final year of college where I will be graduating with a B.A. in English and Comparative Literature with a minor in Philosophy. I enjoy reading just about anything, or I should say I at least give most books a chance. I'm also a bit of a writer, mostly short works of fiction, but I am trying to expand that a bit into longer works. I'm a tad shy at first so I don't have much to say at the moment, but I do enjoy talking with people and discussing literature. Feel free to talk to me and ask me questions!
Thank you very much and I hope everyone has a lovely day :biggrin5:

Hi, I'm Negin from Iran, 20 years old, Currently, studying English Literature and I really love it. I also teach English in an Institute. I loved reading books since childhood and I grew up living in the wizardry world of Harry Potter. He was my best friend and I guess is still one of my best friends... You know I live with the books and their characters sometimes....
I enjoy reading books that their events happen in other worlds not the real one such as harry potter, Narnia ...
Among classic works I ADORE Jane Eyre ...If I could choose to bring one of the characters of the stories into real life for my own I think it would be Edward Rochester...
I'm glad to meet new literature lovers here...Nice to meet you all.

Hi! My middle name is jasmine so you can use that. I'm half english half chinese, living in hk, and I have no idea where I'll be next year because my exam results are not out yet. Hopefully I'll be in England.
My favourite book is Brideshead Revisited. I loved the film Badlands. And I love The Lovesong of J Alfred Prufrock. Ulysses was fun but I won't be touching it again any time soon. I recently bought a slim collection of DH lawrence's poetry and I quite like the one about figs. Obviously I have yet to go through it properly. I'm currently into a bit of Dostoyevsky ( too lazy to check the spelling of his name) but I don't know much about the guy. I've read Notes from the Underground, am reading Crime and Punishment. Needless to say, I love to talk about lit, and other subjects too of course.
Hopefully I'll get to join in some good conversations on this forum!

Hello! My name is Hannah and I live in New Jersey, unfortunately. I am a voracious bibliophilic bookworm, much to my mother's dismay, who would rather me be a nurse or a secretary. I love to explore new worlds with my mind, which is why I prefer fantasy over all genres of literature. I detest the Twilight series, and I'm not a fan of the airbrushed cover romance novels. My favorite genres are: (but I'm mostly open to anything)
High/epic/historical fantasy (no science fiction), anything Victorian/Steampunk/medieval based, alternate history, historical romance and fiction, anything about kings/queens/Tudors, anything involving a lot of mythical creatures, fables/fairytales/folklore/mythology, Victorian mysteries, British detective stories, Gothic horror, sea adventures/swashbuckling/nautical & nautical fantasy, parodies of classics, classics, poetry, History (non-fiction) and a genre called "fantasy of manners" Oh, and P.G. Wodehouse type comedy. :D
I love anything steampunk/Victorian, chess, TED talks, my kitten Peaches & Herb, National Geographic magazine, robotics, cream of broccoli soup, blooming jasmine tea, poetry, Blackadder, opera, ballet, and musical theatre, secondhand bookstores, trains, calligraphy, Gilbert & Sullivan, Stephen Fry, Mr. Bean, art history, playing my cello and reading the Sunday paper.
Sorry if this seems long winded. A pleasure to be in this new society of book lovers.

Greetings and salutations one and all. I am a new forum member, and would like to take the opportunity to say hi (waves excitedly!) and introduce myself.
I am a huge fan of science fiction and fantasy prose, and of poetry in all its vast forms. I write poetry and prose, and like to think that I'm okay-ish at it. I tend to write for myself, and if anyone else likes it, that's a real thrill (and icing on the cake).
I am always trying to improve my writing skills, and I look forward to expanding my experience of literature here on this forum. I will write more later, once I've explored the nooks and crannies of this forum a bit more. Toodles.

Thank you for the invitation to introduce myself. I grew up in Southern California and called Disneyland's Haunted Mansion my second home. Perhaps seeing the ghosts waltzing and hearing the music is why I became interested in taking organ lessons when my piano teacher suggested it -- when my legs were long enough to reach the pedals. Music is also special to me because it was the healing power of music (and many prayers) that helped me recover from a serious sledding injury (basal skull fracture & concussion) that "scattered my type" for awhile while I was in junior high.
When I was away at college majoring in organ performance, I found the library to be a welcome haven after hours of practicing music in the basement of the Fine Arts Center. Coming from California, I appreciated the changing seasons outside. Autumn was my favorite, and I found poetry and books about it. I developed an interest in the history behind Halloween, and devoured literature and research on the topic. One treat: I discovered Bobby Burns' "Halloween" poem, and laughed at the characters in the story, which reminded me of Disney's "Icabod Crane and The Headless Horseman."
I would like to have others benefit, as I have, from the combination of music and literature. After researching Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven," I wrote a musical setting for organ and strings for all 18 verses of the poem and recorded it on a CD. My hope was that it might be helpful to teachers and students to better understand the poem with hearing the emotions of the music. I joined this forum to get more ideas and knowledge for future projects. You can read about some of my other projects on my page.
Thanks from a forum newbie.

Hi All!
New to the forum. I graduated with a degree in English about six years ago. I loved the work I did, but I did not stay in academia...I went into Finance. It's a lucrative career, but I've started to miss being able to talk about literature, art, and film without someone saying, "I think you're looking too deep into it" (and then having to hide my horror at their statement).
I hope I have found a community where I can finally discuss meanings that go beyond the surface without alienating myself from everyone in the room, and where "it is what it is" is NOT an acceptable answer!
If so, then I have MISSED you all...deeply...

Hello! I'm Chirpy! Not my real name but close enough. :)
I used to read every book I could get my hands on. Now I read mostly... erm... non-profit fiction written by independent authors on the internet only marginally protected by copy-write laws? Haha I just can't turn a library book in on time to save my life. Being a "friend of the library" (comes with a badge and unwanted emails!) does not save you from fines.
I love word play and symbolism. We will marry.
What else? I have this thing where I can only read certain books in certain places. IOW I won't be finishing LotR until I can get back up to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. I travel a lot, so it could be worse. Better.
I am a writer. Writing is my passion and main life-ruiner. Also the reason I decided to join. I am looking for place to share my writing, receive good crit, and discuss lovely literature things in general. I hope I find a home here. :)

My compliments to both you for working with the deaf and especially to your student for managing honors classes despite her handicap. Working on either side of that fence takes both courage and strength.
That said, are you really doing her a service by avoiding reading a book you need to be helping her with? Any parent and teacher will tell a student looking for shortcuts to actually reading a work that there is no substitute. I think the same message would apply in spades to a teacher. How can you possibly effectively teach a book if you haven't read it?
Animal Farm is very short and could easily be knocked off in an evening if you have time. if it would help you further, maybe your student can get for you the planned reading schedule from her class teacher, so you can read just the chapter(s) in advance for your next meeting with her.
And take heart--at least it isn't War and Peace.

Hello,
I'm Lisa, 29 and married to Hans.
I'm a piercer (in training) and work as a maid for elderly to help them stay in their own home longer by doing their cleaning, groceries and things like that.
I've always wanted to study English, but never had the money for it. I've decided that it no longer matters, and that I'll study without the university, teachers and class mates. I love reading and I like gathering information from several sources to get a clear view.
I'm hoping to find like minded people, that do not consider my favourite books dusty, boring and old-fashioned. I think I succeeded the moment I found this website though! I hope to become a helpful forum member and maybe even find friends here.
Have a good day!

Hello, I'm Ankit. I've been looking for places on the Internet to talk about literary fiction and haven't found anything great yet. I try and use goodreads every now and then, but it's frustrating and I haven't been able to meet new readers easily. I use Quora a lot and it has some great threads about literature and fiction and reading, but it's too dominated by talk about science, startups and Silicon Valley as of now. I'm currently reading Pale Fire and The Age of Innocence. I particularly enjoy 20th century fiction, and American authors like Wallace, Franzen, Eugenides, DeLillo among many others.

Born in Italy in the 70s, I am a Londoner. My great passion is for Literature, Comparative Literature in particular, poetry and epic. If I mentioned my favourite writers you would find very common names in the list: Dante, Milton, Joyce, Vergil, Eliot, Woolf and Dickens...
I am a writer and poet myself, with a couple of books out and a novel to come soon, 'The Road to London'.
I am also a Teacher and Lecturer of English, Latin, Anglo-Saxon, Classical History, History of Art, Philosophy and Ancient Greek.

If you are familiar with the musician G.G. Allin, you will know that he has an album called "Hated in the Nation". Unfortunately, that phrase also applies to my reputation in that horrid place, real life.
It is not uncommon for people to go to the Internet and contact people with like-minded interests as an escape from their surrounding sycophants or detractors. This is my attempt.
That out of the way: I like Joyce, Miller, Nabokov, Orwell, Plato, Nietzsche, and others; I have lurked the site for many seconds and even minutes.
Now there is a tendency I have noted in others, offline and online. There is, depending on their personality (that is the thing that makes you date people, if you didn't know), a certain amount of time that a person will allow my obnoxiousness to linger like a mist around them, before making their displeasure clear. I hope to delay that date with you people.
That's all. Good night, and God help us... in the future.

Well the reason I'm here is to solicit suggestions on who is writing the great literature of the last 20 years. Kinda lost touch with the literary world around '95. I've read and appreciated DF Wallace, J Lethem, J Franzen, J Eugenides, M Lehner. Past heros included Pynchon, Rushdie, Barth, Vonnegut, Richler, Miller,Mailer,Kerouac,Bukowski, Brautigan, J Harrison, McGuane, R Banks. Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks!

Hello all! How do I introduce myself? I'm a book nerd, reading since an early age and never stopped. Voracious but if a book bores me I will easily toss it aside. Subscribe to the Nancy Pearl formula- subtract your age from one hundred and that's how many pages you should give a book. For me I round so that's about 60 or so;) love YA- very underrated and overlooked. Read mainly fiction, love a good juicy character driven novel I can sink my teeth into and chase with a glass (or two) of Chardonnay. Love the classics, beach books and trashy novels. Read for escapism. Am working on a book about my time living/working in the Cayman Islands but fiction is truly stranger than fact.

Hallo. I'm a very new member in here. I am from Indonesia and recently I am falling in love with books! Especially detective story. See you through the screen!
P.S. Please excuse my English. It is my second language. And I hope it won't become an obstacle for you to communicate with me in the future. Thank you for your understanding. C:

I'm not new, but I haven't been active in a long, long time. I'm Kristina, 26 years old from Gothenburg, Sweden. I'm a teacher working in a preschool with a focus on outdoor pedagogy. I've always been a reader of fiction, since I knew how to read. I mainly read classics, general fiction and have developed a fascination for African fiction in the last couple of years. I listen to music a lot, mostly indie and singer/songwriters. Also just moved into a new apartment with my fiancé. That's all for now. Looking forward to trying to be more active agan!

Anyway...since I can't post links here, I updated my profile to include a few things like links to the recent video interview of me which posted on various Gannett news sites, and the first newspaper article about me...I was going to say here that I found this site because one of my poems was read at the Fermanagh Festival in Northern Ireland for Poetry Day (UK) Oct. 3...they read a different poem at a different site in Enniskillen on the hour from 8AM to 8PM...my poem was the last read btw, at the Enniskillen Fire Station by local author Ken Ramsey...I found this site because I wanted to read a couple of the other poems that were read, and they showed up here...still can't post the link...oh well...

Greetings! I am a high school student with an interest in music, cinema, mathematics and literature. I recently ascertained that I vastly prefer poetry and non-fiction over novels and short stories, but I hope that will not restrain my posting too much. My favorite authors are John Milton, William Hazlitt, Vladimir Nabokov and James Joyce.

Hello, everyone...
As you can see my user name is Spring-heeled J (though I could've sworn I registered as that legendary spook/entity of Victorian folklore Spring-heeled Jack, but, what the hey...) and I'm glad to be aboard a site whose members share the same interests as myself. Those interests? Virtually all classic (note the emphasis) literature, both fiction and non. A list of my favorite writers of fiction would include Homer, Virgil, Ovid, Dante, Boccaccio, Chaucer, Cervantes, Rablelais, Milton, Marlowe, Goethe, Dostoevsky, Hardy, Balzac, Hugo, Eliot and Twain. Favorite nonfictionalists would be Herodotus, Thucydides, Cicero, Augustine, Froissart, Voltaire, Gibbon, Burke, von Ranke, Tocqueville, Spengler and Durant. Philosophy-wise my far and away favorite would be Nietzsche.
Once again: I'm happy to be here, and I hope it's going to be a lot of fun,

my name is Susi and I'm from Germany (hopefully that's not a problem). I study literary studies and history and I'm addicted to books, arts and languages. I read a lot of books in English (Neil Gaiman, Julian Barnes, Zadie Smith, Gertrude Stein and so on) and I really like to discuss about literature in english (also to train my english, I don't have a problem to understand, but I'm not pretty well-spoken). So if it's not a problem it would be an honor to take part of this forum.

Hi all - joined here a few months ago at the urging of a Twitter friend - hey ScherLitNet! - time to stop lurking and start posting. Love to read, hope/trying to write. As a child read everything I could from the back of the cereal box to my mother's Good Housekeeping. My tastes are still all over the place - love a good trashy novel, the "classics," YA, history books (British history especially- my geek dream is to read at Oxford for Tudor history), but mainly fiction. Reread The Odyssey, Gone With the Wind and Gatsby every few years. I try not to judge people on their book choices (see my admitted fondness for trash) but if you say that the DaVinci Code or 50 Shades of Gray changed your life...well, I can't promise no internal eyeroll. Love to travel, love love LOVE hockey (Let's Go Deviils!) and adore a good used book sale. Former bookstore/textbook manager looking to get back to the world of words:-)
ETA - Just realized I posted here a few weeks ago - sorry for the double post - the memory apparently ain't quite what it used to be!

Does anyone familiar with any website where i can read good summaries on The biography of Benjamin Franklin and Self-reliance of Emerson?
Calidore
11-19-2013, 04:32 PM
You don't need a summary for Emerson; you can read the whole thing here:
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Essays:_First_Series/Self-Reliance
Benjamin Franklin has numerous biographies. You can read Wikipedia for starters, or you can read the one Franklin wrote himself here:
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/148
Though be advised that American English in the mid-18th century looks and reads somewhat differently from today's.

Hi!!
I was looking for a place where I can discuss the awesome (and not so awesome) books I have read and find recommendations for other ones..... I was hoping to find a network of like-minded people who will participate in interesting discussions about the meanings behind the stories. I have been a bookworm since before I can remember, which admittedly is not very much, but reading is a passion of mine and an intrinsic part of my life and I feel that by my literary analysis skills have faded with time and I hope to revive them...
Looking forward to lots of fruitful discussions and challenging debates,
Nina

Hi everybody. I've lurked around here for about a month or so, but have decided I might jump in the conversation. I've been reading a lot of classics lately, and have enjoyed reading discussions about them. Anyway, looking forward to being part of the community.

Hey! My name is Theo, I'm 14 years old, I come from Romania and I like to read (mostly) crime books, like Aghatha Christie's novels, but I enjoy any genre. Actually, at the moment, I am reading "Suad-burnt alive", a book about the Jordanian women and the horrible way they are treated in.
I also like music, mostly any genre (except the new, commercial type), but especially the '50s ballads. (mostly due to my experience in Mafia II). Oh yeah, I also like videogames. But not the type of videogames that just put a gun in your hand and ask you to shoot a lot of people. I like the "storyful" videogames, the immersive videogames, the videogames that make you feel like you are there.
THANK YOU for the time you took reading this. :D

Hi. I'm trying to figure out where to post for help finding a poem/essay . . . my mother has her 90th birthday soon and won an elocution contest in Binghampton, NY in the 1930's . . . it was "A Skate on the Lake (selected)" about a young girl learning to figure skate when she realizes there is a bear behind her which forces her onto the lake/skates/etc . . we've never been able to locate the story and she cannot remember the author. I thought it would be a nice gift to find prior to her birthday celebration. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!

Kateh! My name's Hwo Thumb, and I'm an amateur, underage writer. Currently I'm working on my first novel, a science fiction piece called Grae. Some of my favorite books are Ender's Game, as well as the shadow series that accompanies it, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Wool, a little known but pretty fantastic 550 page omnibus you can pick up on the kindle store for five bucks.
I love writing anything that comes to mind, but science fiction is my favorite because I can make up my own rules. The two works that I think have influenced my writing style the most are the TV show, Firefly (Which everyone should watch) and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Which everyone should read)

Hello from chilly Scotland!
It is difficult to introduce yourself on the page, I am someone who enjoys reading and writing. I mean writing on paper with a pen, is there anything quite so satisfying as watching the curl of letters across a page?
I am the mother of 3 nearly grown up children and on many occasion books have saved my sanity!
It is nice to meet you all on the page/screen...

Hello, Pensive. Hello, everyone,
I hope you're enjoying the holidays.
Yours seems to be a very interesting community. I can't wait to start reading and following threads, especially the ones about short stories.
Writing short stories is a pastime of mine, but I really have to trick myself into doing it. I promise myself rewards: make fresh pots of coffee, treat myself with butter and chocolate cookies or a glass of red, play my favorite music -well, you know the list. But in the end, I have fun doing it. I wish I had more time -and more discipline- to write.
I read more, though. But, not as much as I'd like to. Life gets in the way, I guess. But I do take any chance I can to visit those wonderful worlds, feelings, sensations and characters I cherish. Sometimes, I just go and visit my most beloved ones, I hope I'm not alone there :smile5:
Thank you for reading this. Hope to get to know you and have a nice time around talking to people who wouldn't use "boring" as an adjective to describe 18th century French poetry

Hello everybody!
I'm glad that I'm here among these virtual characters because I see a great volcano which bursts over and over again. What is so wonderful about this "disaster?" Well, it is the fact that the lava from this volcano is made by stories, human experiences and skilled minds, I guess. I am the same as you, I love to read (especially things related to philosophy, spirituality, science or fiction) and I love to write (I do not know what am I writing.)
So this is me. My name is Gina, I'm 24, currently studying the theory and practice of image (master's degree).
All the best,
G

Just registered to this FORUM! I'm a little shy, so I'll just say that I was searching for something on the internet and fell upon this site.
Just wondering why the work: Tao Te Ching on this site was spelled: Tao Te King . . . Why the change from CH to K ?
Thanks

Hi everyone, my name is Pauline. I recently read a book by an English professor and decided to follow through on an idea I had a while back to read some of the classics I never read in school. Since I don't want to do it just for the sake of saying I did it, I was looking for resources to help me benefit more from reading them - which is how I came upon this site.
I read a lot, a mix of novels and non-fiction. Up through college I generally stuck to "literature" but after college I tried reading some "popular fiction" (I think starting with Dick Francis), and discovered it was not as brain-degrading as I'd thought it would be. I like mysteries (favorites are Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael series and Dorothy Gilman's Mrs. Pollifax books), historical fiction, science fiction/fantasy (I particularly like time travel books), and, well, lots of other stuff. Dean Koontz is my current favorite author. I also like reading about science, history, religion, language, sometimes other topics as long as it's written in an interesting manner (and I don't get far in book even on subjects I like if it's not written in an interesting manner).
Of course, my reading has to fit around work (currently computer admin at a community college), family (married to a pastor, younger son who is still at home is in 8th grade), and church (I lead a Bible study, sing in the choir and play in the handchime choir). But somehow I find time, even though my housework suffers for it.

Hi everybody! So refreshing to join a community that is not oversubscribed. It usually takes me longer to pick my user name, but registering with this forum only took few seconds. Anyhow, about me: I am a book worm. I have read a lot of books, I have written a lot of feature articles, and I am now trying to get my second book published. This one is a romance; my first attempt was a childrens' book which was never published.
I will let you all know how my efforts are going!

I am also learning JAZZ and involved in some NGO work but i really need to give voice to those silent cacophony of my opinions echoing in the coffin of my head so here i am .

My name is cheyrn and I am a bad writer. No, you don't understand. I mean a very bad writer. I think I am not a bad reader though. I am here in case someone will have mercy on me, and show me the errors of my ways.
Actually, my most immediate concern is that people at work usually have no clue what I am saying to them in email. When I have asked people what they think it is that I do that makes my writing so inpenetrable, they have never been direct and honest with me. So, hopefully the problem I have there will appear in the horror I will subject you to, when I post a story and if you choose to read it. Hint: spare yourself, don't read it.
