Hi everyone. As of the moment, I'm the newest member in this community. :D

I'm an English teacher and have traveled almost all of Asia teaching English. I love what I'm doing for it makes me happy and I have the opportunity to experience other culture as well.

Hello!

And Hi Kate - I'm also a middle aged woman who has discovered literature. I like the look, the feel, and the smell of books, and I am mesmerized by the beauty of the language of the classics.

I am working my way through Alexandre Dumas' work at the moment.

But one thing aside - I am researching (for a surprise Christmas gift) the rest of an old English children's nursery rhyme/game that starts something like this:

Here come I, stiff as a stump,
Selling my blacking for a penny a lump.

It goes on to hush the children, and warn them to behave, or do as their told.

Anyone know this?

Thanks for being available everybody - this is a wonderfule site.

Hello everyone. Glad that I actually found a site like this. I am keen in literature, which is apparently quite detested in my area, Singapore. I have read 1984 by Orwell, Simulacra And Simulation by Baudrillard, Brave New World by Huxley, and currently reading The Brothers Karamazov by Doetoevsky. Took me half a month plus to reach the 300 page milestone. Man my concentration span is really short. Many of my friends do not read books like this, stuck with their game books and normal novels, which I quote Orwell "prolefeed" hehe. Oh yeah, and I'm 14 this year. Its hard to find peers that are close to me to talk about literature you know. Anyways, I am really glad and excited that I've found such an online community which will benefit my knowledge for years to come O_O (again, I shall state, I AM 14, nothing to brag though, just feel that I'm a little young hehehehe)

I googled 'til my fingers bled and only found the three lines you refer to.

I wonder how you came across it in the first place, and what the signifigance is, but that would be the part of the conversation where my wife would kick me under the table (which I know is a sign to shut up though I'm often unclear as to why) and later tell me to mind my own business. :D

Hi, I am thrilled to have just found this site and registered on it!

Christine,

Here come I, stiff as a stump, selling my blacking a penny a lump.
I don't know this rhyme, but I can reference its meaning for you.

There's piece called 'Humorous Fancy' by Deering or Dering from 1610, which is made up of the street cries of those hawking their goods and trades. I have a collection of some songs from Shakespeare's plays and from him his time. 'Cryes of London' is a song a I know that derives from the text above.

'Buy any black, buy any black...will you buy any blacking, maids?'

Blacking was a substance used like shoe polish, for boots to keep them black.

I don't know the exact source of your poem, but at least I could shed some light on its meaning. Hope it helps. Really interesting.

Hello Skull Farmer,

(Don't know the reference, if there is one).

Thanks for trying! I'm trying to find it because I work with a woman whose grandmother immigrated here to the States as a young woman, and taught it to her when she was a young girl, and she would dearly like to hold on to some pieces of her heritage. The rest of her family that would know or remember have passed. So, I was going to find it and surprise her and make a miniature script of the poem/rhyme as a Christmas ornament for her, but the only reference I find on line that has it, requires membership:

Google search:
links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0015-587X(19320930)43%3A3%3C249%3ASNOTFO%3E2.0.CO...
Website:
http://www.jstor.org/pss/1256121

I am neither an educator nor a member of any university group that has a membership to the above, so I'm not allowed in to search the database.

But, I do really thank you so very much for trying, and please let your wife know you certainly don't deserve a kick (not this time, anyway!).

Hi Irtress!

Great site, isn't it?

Thanks so much for your help. I'm not sure where to go with this now, if anywhere. But perhaps someone else will read this and have something to add.

Very interesting research you quoted. Your collection sounds fascinating.

I'll keep an eye out, and thanks again for your help.

Hello!

My real name is Nicole. I'm not entirely sure how I found this site...I think I started googling sites about literature and stumbled onto this site not long ago. I just decided to take some time and register on the boards because I absolutely love talking about literature. I try to read a variety of books, and joined an online book club last year through my local university to get more exposure to recently released books I might not otherwise read.

I graduated with a master's in public policy a little over 2 years ago and in tandem with building a career I've probably spent just as much time immersing myself into literature. That first year after being out of college was a tough transition and I started reading books left and right and as much as I wanted to discuss some of the works I was reading, my friends and co-workers could only take so much ;). I'm also very interested in writing and had the opportunity to participate in a literature project with a California university earlier this year. Since then I've started taking a few writing workshops and courses, and I hope to further cultivate my writing.

Aside from reading and writing, I have a lot of other interests... music, art, comedy, podcasts, tv, watching football, travel, walking aimlessly during my lunch hour at work ;p, etc...I just try to enjoy each day as best I can.

Well, this introduction is long enough. Look forward to being a part of this community.

I made my way here, bounding through space, much as Nicole my predecessor did, linked by rogue key-typings to this position. To make a short matter long, I followed Yeats here to the stand where he left his mask and then was intrigued by this meeting-ground of minds.

A minute ago I was writing erotica, and a few minutes before that typing words into Endnote for a PhD.

Lots of literature exists in digital spaces, but I love to cuddle a book before bedtime. If its good enough, I need not sleep. Books I have liked in the recent past have been : Kurt Vonnegut 'Slaughterhouse Five', Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island' and 'Kidnapped'. I also like fantasy, thrillers (like Hannibal- which is so much more fun than the movei based on it) , and Chinese 'roving errant' fiction (by Jin Yong). I used to like Anne Rice a great deal, but her writing ceased to be addictive for me after 'Lestat'.

Pleased it be to meet you all and may your halls be finely decked with folly!

I found the next two lines! Nice quest, by the way.

Here I come as stiff as a stump,
Selling my blacking a penny a lump,
You must neither laugh nor smile,
But say right down "I will"

The same player then proceeds to ask a number of nonsensical questions with the object of making the other players laugh. As soon as one of them does so, the game is over.

Hello all,

I'm a guy on break from the university for a year or so more while I sort through what I want to do with the rest of my life. Found this site while looking for a short story that I had read a handful of years ago but can't find anywhere and thought it looked like a great community.

I was a runner and idealist in my younger years. Now I'm just me and playfully exploring all the wonderful ups and downs of that understanding :)

Love to be active; running, swimming, fencing, parkour, and every sport I've ever been so lucky as to have played. Which reminds me that I'm still looking for some people that would be up for a game of rarajupari ('foot throwing'), haha.

I like to read but have been limited in how much I can do of that lately with time constraints from work. Plan to make up some time over the holidays.

Anyways, figure this isn't nearly as long as some but it will suffice as my introduction. Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Amos :D

:) I have always loved to read. It's my window to the world. I am currently reading "Gathering Blue" by Lois Lowry. I met her a couple of weeks ago when she gave a book talk at our town. Our community college presented a musical of her book. It was great! Following the performance the audience was able to ask questions of the author, the playwright, and the song writers. That was fantastic!

Hey guys, I'm Drew and obviously I'm a reader.
I don't have one favorite author, but I go through phases where I attempt to read everything one particular author has written. Right now it's David Foster Wallace. Before that it was Roth. Before that there was a period of just trying to read everything with no one particular obsession. And before that it was Bret Easton Ellis (ugh), who came after Palahniuk (ugh) and Vonnegut (whom* I still enjoy).
I don't have one favorite book. Possibly Swann's Way but of course that's not a full novel. Starting to read Great Expectations has me thinking this could become not only my favorite Dickens but a number one favorite of all time, though I of course haven't finished it yet. I'm a pretty big fan and defender of all those standard high school English books I was supposed to "get over" like Catcher in the Rye and The Great Gatsby.
The story of my life right now is that while I always feel like I read more than the people around me in my life. Usually in a small crowd I am considered "the literatue expert", but this doesn't feel right because deep down I know I haven't even come close to a proper sampling of all the literature there is to step into out there. I hope this forum will help me challenge myself to read more, and to know what to read, in what order, etc.

*Proper use? Don't want to sound like a pseudointellectual but at the same time I'm not sure if that's correct.

Hello everybody,

I hope you’re all doing well.

I live in Brazil and I’m a graduate student in Arts. I came here by chance, and what a happy chance it was, because one of the topics here led me to the amazing novel I’m reading now (“The blind Owl” by Sadegh Hedayat) .

I’m a fan of medieval literature (though by no means an erudite on the matter), as well of the Romantic and Symbolist movements.

Nice to meet all of you!

Greetings to all voracious readers,
First, thank you to the project creators and managers for making this site and providing an opportunity to discuss the power of literature with people across the world..

I am a recent high school graduate and intending to do a bachelor of biomedical science or psychology. Having a great extent of interest in the human brain/mind, become a neuroscientist, neuropsychologist or anything along the line would be the greatest accomplishment for me yet.

Back to literature, I am looking forwards to the a great experience of connecting with serious readers, sharing invaluable insights and ideas that most people may miss in a timeless novel.

My name is Seow It Sze. I always wanted to be a writer but work took me away for more than 50 years. Yes I am quite old. I have however kept up a lively interest in Literature but again most of it was read in my youth. I have read Homer, Goethe, Charles Dickens and Russian writers, my favorite Leo Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. I tell you that my worldview underwent a change when I read The Brothers Karamozov. I was also influenced by the Bible and the Qur'an. I became a Muslim in mid life and Tolstoy's Haji Murad rang deep bells in my soul.

I've never used a forum before, and I don't ordinarily like talking to people, but this seems like a place in which I can meet ones worth meeting. I started out reading out of a need for peers. I found the interests of everyone around me idiotic and childish, and Sartre was the first person I found I was capable of identifying with. My current tastes include, among Sartre, Witkacy, Kafka, Beckett, Genet, Hesse, Pessoa, Kiekegaard and just recently Dostoevsky. I've read only little bits of Tolstoy, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, J. K. Huysmans and Eugene Ionesco, but I enjoy them as well.

Hello all!:)
I'm new here and really excited of finding this forum as I'm interested in literature very much and actually I'm studying English language and literature at university.
I started learning English at the age of 12 at school but actually the education system is so disorganized in teaching language here at schools and doesn't hep at all since it's mostly focused on grammar and I believe this is almost the worst way to approach a new language.
Painting is my other passion beside literature and i'm especially interested in digital painting.I enjoy music too, almost any kind of music except heavy metal and this sort of noisy musics I say.
hmmm well I forgot to say that I'm 20 and Persian;)

12-29-2008, 02:22 PM
Hey, I'm Darkflare. To keep myself enigmatic, and because I'm rather lazy, I'm not telling you anything else. I'll tantalisingly reveal however, that I play guitar and am in lower sixth form. Tell me what you think of the following story and I may reveal more about myself. Maybe.

The dusty brown path continued in a straight line towards the mountains;
which towered impressively over the surrounding countryside. A simplistic rail fence encompassed the path, and alienated it from the luscious green grassland which stretched out far towards the blue horizon, completely embracing the little village I had recently exited. A small village on the outskirts of nowhere, behind some generic mountains. The perfect place for the king of this not-so-fine country to hide his greatest treasure. The treasure which not so coincedently, happened to have found new residence within my pocket.

I strode brisquely, but not too brisquely away from the soon to be in panic village. I casually admired the blue cloudless sky and the smug sun, whilst considering how best to spend my new found spoils. I wore all black, from my fingerless gloves to my large black collar, right down to my black leather boots. My long brown scruffy hair effectively covered the top half of my face, while my black and white bandana covered the bottom half. Suspicious? Maybe. Warranting of curiousity? Not if I remained outwardly aggressive. The cowardly, backwards villagers would not approach that which may bite.

Screams and shouts erupted from the village behind me. A little sooner than I expected, but still, I was a good few hundred metres away. I casually placed my hands in my pockets and glanced behind me. Apparently I wasn't far enough. I ceased any pretence of innocence and sprinted at the kind of speed only I could run. Kicking up dust with my arms punching the air in front of me. The armoured guards I had neglected to account for rapidly became specks in the panorama behind me. I could just see their shocked faces. I smiled. They shouted. My eyes widened in surprise.

"Vampire!!!" They screamed.

Hey :]

Well, i'm Lima, and i absolutely love, love, love books. I go through stages of needing to read certain genres and completely going off other books for a long time and vice versa.

I think my favourite novels all tend to have certain things in common, most are set in America during the 40's - 60's. Of course i don't look for novels that have that in common, it just seems to be a general trait my books share. I love fantasy and sci fi novels, and novels about supernatural things - but they're a guilty pleasure of mine because some of them are so trashy (verging on goosebumps stuff)

And right now i'm reading The Sound and the Fury :]

Hello, new face saying hi. Er... what do you want to know? I have pretensions to being a writer myself (bet I'm not alone there!), love Shostakovich and my son (no, not in that order!) and I'm funny. I think.

Alright, I'll settle down. I found this place by accident when looking for somewhere to read Paradise Lost online (can't find my copy and am too skint to buy a new one at present.) It looks like a fantastic place but I haven't even begun to explore it yet, thought I'd follow the suggestion to say hello first.

The profile set up asks you for your favourite author, and all I could write was: Er...
How are you supposed to answer that? For today I think I'll go with Steinbeck because I may only have read three of his books but all three were fantastic pieces of work. But that'll change tomorrow. By the way, I'm aware my grammar is awful. I do it on purpose to present a more conversational style of writing, I feel that it allows readers to get to know me better. would be interesting to get some feedback on that as a matter of fact.

Anyway, my eyes hurt now so that's it for the moment. Nice to meet you all!

I could go on to write a series of books just about these experiences alone but will spare you in these early days :) Happy new year (or at least a peaceful new year...) to you all, Janine.

Reading is better than living. Hate to say it, but somehow books just aren't quite so hard and all. There's so much beauty and love and danger that isn't really dangerous in the least, unless you're reading H.P. Lovecraft and are in danger of being sucked into an alternate and very slimy dimension.

But as long as you stay away from that guy, you'll be okay, readingwise. More people get killed in auto accidents than ever hurt themselves reading a book.

I'm delighted to find this forum. I had to go join some forums since my web guy said I had to do that get my site ranked better for search engines. But it turns out that it's a great opportunity. I've looked over some of the postings already and am majorly jazzed to get the idears flowin.

My hobbies are Photoshop and writing and editing and now, apparently, posting in forums online. I'm a fantasy author, but a closet literature freak. Worship Shakespeare and the word he rode in on.

Not so overly fond of modern artistic endeavor, however. It's just too goldurn artistic for me. I take my art straight please, only when it happens accidently, in the pursuit of communication.

Words, words, words,

Maletbon

I just realized I never *formally* introduced myself here. Hello, my name is Jacob (obviously), I am a high school student from Ontario, Canada. Reading, video games, listening to music and writing are my main hobbies. I'm a sedentary person as you can tell. I snowboard in the winter, but that's about it.

I've always been eager to hone my craft of writing and learn about literature. I came to this site to do those two things. I don't really learn much about literature in school, or as much as I'd like. Not to sound like some sort of elitist, but the public education system is so dumbed down that it is not about learning anything anymore. The ideals of liberal education are absent from the public schools. "Teacher gives sheet, student completes sheet, student hands in" is the mentality. So I do most of my learning on my own, and hopefully I can from this site.

I'd like to be a writer someday, or perhaps an English professor. I want to devote my life to reading and writing, and as long as I have enough finances to just get by I will be happy. I'm probably going to major in either English or journalism in university. I like this thread, because it's the only time I can get away with talking about myself and not alienate other people. Unless I already have. Well, if you're still reading this, I probably haven't alienated you. And if you stopped reading, then we'll never know then, shall we. Anyways, that's all.

Hello there, everyone. I'm a quiet girl from northern England and stumbled upon this site quite by accident while doing research for Eng Lit homework. Pretty soon, research was forgotten and I was lost in the forums.

My two great loves are literature and music, and when not playing viola, I'm probably reading. I'll read just about anything, really, though I draw the line at the more obscure, experimental modern books. I love Jane Austen and Persuasion is my favourite, though it's closely followed by the Lord of the Rings trilogy, hence the picture. I'm also a bit of a Shakespeare obsessive, hence the name. Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and Henry V are a few particular favourites. The soundtrack to my life is mostly classical, particularly Beethoven and Elgar, and just about anything by Bach is great fun to play.

I'll avoid mentioning anything from the "real world", as my love of literature is mostly for the sake of escapism. What better than forgetting about coursework deadlines and rubbish weather for a few hours with a good book?

I'd love to be an author one day, though if that doesn't work out, a career in academia doing something English-related sounds good. Thanks for reading.

Hi, name's Ammie. I came across this site today, and liked what I saw. Can't say I'm much for posting, but I will when there is a topic that arouses my interest, and opinions. I currently have no favorite book, for I love all books that I finish. As for favorite authors, well I'm at a loss for one as well. As for a brief summary on my personality, let's just say that I'm complicated, and not too keen on talking about myself, but love finding out about others.

Hi all.

This is my first post to say Hi. I am from England and currently studying for a degree in English Literature, so you will probally see me here a lot. Judging by the age poll, I fall into the older category and so can be classed as a "mature student." (That only applies to my age) A few years ago I decided a change in career was in order and became a teacher. I currently teach English language whilst at the samee time am in my second year at Uni, as I want to expand my teaching capacity. Apart from reading my biggest passion is keeping fish. I have a salt water tank, a tropical tank, a goldfish tank and a Koi pond. Due to mine and my wife's strange nature we shunned the option of living in a house and bought a boat, which we live on in central London.

I think that's enough of an introduction for now. More later

Hello All,
I must say that I am excited to find a forum of this sort; considering that I am an avid reader as well as a writer. I am extremely interested in existentialism and would consider myself an existentialist, but I despise labels. I am also interested in the "Beat Generation" writers, namely William Burroughs, as well as Oscar Wilde, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Søren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche. I believe this introduction shall suffice, good day all.

Hello all! This is my first day, so I'm a little nervous... I love to read, but I've had trouble finding others who like to read. Isn't that odd? I live in a rural area, so there really aren't any reading groups. The local library activities are geared toward kids, so that's not really an option. I live 50 miles from the closest bookstore, so you can see my dilemma. I do have a friend that reads, but she doesn't keep her books which confuses me because I horde books. Currently, I'm reading Twilight. My 16 year old niece gave it to me for Christmas. She loves the series, and it thrills me that she's reading. Although she picked up the reading habit in detention... So, I guess being tardy every other day isn't a bad thing. I host a Monday morning talk show called, ADM. So, if you've ever run through my mind on the first day of the work week, you've probably heard it. It usually runs 7:30 to 8:00 during my commute. On occasion, special guests are featured. This week it was Elvis. He works at the Louisville Slugger factory, which I find interesting. I asked him why, but we were interupted by an Amish buggy making a right-hand turn. Well, I've rambled on enough. It's about time to run home, throw on every purple-colored article of clothing that I own and head to the ballgame. Wish us luck!

I’m Tony Jefferson, a relative newcomer to sharing my work with the world. I’ve been writing for about 16 years now.

I feel with each day that i write i get more insight into who i am and as i discover myself, hopefully i can help others express themselves. I love writing, it’s one of my passions, my other being massage.

As i’ve said before i am a soldier currently serving for the second time in Iraq. I will post a few journals about my time over here, hopefully by doing this people will start to understand, if only a little, the life of a soldier in Iraq.

More than just poetry, i will start to branch out into other things such as short stories and other things. For now, i just want to bare a piece of my soul to the world and help others discover themseves through poetic expression.

A little background on me. I was born and raised in Pine Bluff, Arkansas a little town in the southeastern part of the state. I come from humble begginings, but that didn’t stop me from going after my dreams and achieveing a few goals.

I love all forms of art, poetry is my thing, but i have an appreciation for art, music, and other forms of poetic expression.

I'm a Filipino, presently working in Kuwait "in the service" of the filipinos here.
I'm a wanderer when it comes to religion, born Catholic, then JW, then Kabbalah, Theosophy, Satanism, Islam. I'm not a good writer. My talent is to 'grab' other people's ideas bit-by-bit and mixed it to create a new one, but I never present it as my own. I am not trying to plagiarize anyones' splended ideas. For me Plagiarism is copying one man's work, but copying the works of many is RESEARCH.

Though my major has nothing to do with literature (I've fallen into the crack of Biotechnology, and health research) history, languages, and literature were my very first loves that never left my heart. I'm an avid reader, and I'll give practically any book, poem, short story, etc. a chance.

I decided I wanted to join a forum that let me be a geek. :-)

Hey Y'all! I'm a 48 year old otherwise educated person who has read almost no literature. As a kid, I thought I liked to read but the truth was I'd just sit with a book and stare at the page reading the same words over and over. I got through HS with cliff notes and college without taking a single lit course. It wasn't until a few years ago when I was finally diagnosed with ADHD that I found out what I thought was mild dyslexia was vastly improved by taking one silly little pill. What a lot of time I've wasted! So, I decided to try and start catching up on the world's great literature. I started with Moby Dick, which was intriguing but didn't strike me as something that should be called 'great'. In trying to understand it better, I found your forum. Lots of well thought out entries. I've never participated in something like this but am looking forward to it. I think I'll try to finish Dante's Inferno next. I started it a few years ago when my daughter took a HS course on it, but I couldn't keep up. Any other suggestions?

Other than that im a mere 14 years of age, struggling through the rest of my legally required education, and the only thing i have ever really had a passion for in school is literature. Now whenever anybody asks, i tell them i want to be a writer to keep them hushed. I have my doubts, my freinds say the phrase "crash and burn" comes to mind when i talk of my future career, mind you, they've always been supportive....:bawling:

All Hail -one new member crawls out from under a stone, somewhere in England, to found out what the rest of the world reads. We in this sceptred Isle tend to be a bit conservative, and the education system stills drills Shakespeare, Bacon, Chaucer, Dickens, Anthony Trollope and a few other classical English writers. The thought of doing Steinbeck, say, at school would have aged teachers swooning in the clas-room, then throwing themselves under a passing double-deck bus.
I have been brought up with a lot of the great Welsh writers, starting obviously with the Mabinogion, a catalogue of very early Celtic writings, then later poets like Dylan Thomas, Idris Davis, Housman and others. Much of Welsh literature is still produced in Welsh, which is the oldest European language, a matter of much pride in Wales.
I try and write myself, but having seen the thread about the worst writer in the world, stop searching, lads and lasses, I'm here!! I am also a photographer, working mostly with local stuff in the City where I live, Sheffield.
I love Rugby Union Football, speaking Welsh, and I collenct different translations if the Bible, my oldest dating from 1641. I have some in German, Russian and Obviously Welsh.
I'm looking forward to learnig lots from this Forum, and hopefully expanding my horizons beyond the North Sea. Thanks for the welcome

Anyways, I look forward to having great discussions,

Hi there. I'm from Canada, Montreal to be exact, and I'm a classics student by love of it, rather than for grades. I am retired and taking regular undergrad Classics classes, but not for credit. I was an English teacher at a junior college here for 32 years, and I taught the Odyssey and Greek myth in my course. It's nice these days to sit with the students for a change and learn Roman literature. I am currently reading the Aeneid, and find it very much like the Odyssey and the Iliad, especially in the way that Virgil borrows many of Homer's ideas on things. For example, he has Venus clean up the recently-shipwrecked and therefore messy Aeneus before he meets Dido; Homer had Athena do the same thing for Odysseus after he was shipwrecked and about to meet people.

I have to confess that much as I love Steinbeck, he makes me feel uncomfortable a lot of the time, so I don't read as much of it as I should. I think that it's too close to reality to be treated as fiction, even if it is. (Sounds a bit convoluted, that, but I hope you know what I mean). As I get older, now 54, I'm getting more into poetry. It won't be long before I'm wearing flowing clothes, carrying a daffodil and quoting huge chunks of "The Ballad of Reading Gaol".

First of all, welcome to the forum! And I can understand what you mean by 'feeling uncomfortable' while reading Steinbeck's works. But I don't see why anything close to reality shouldn't be treated as fiction. Fantasy, no. But fiction, yes.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this site. I've always enjoyed writing poetry and prose and have recently been writing alot of short one to three page stories. I was looking for a place online to begin publishing them so I started a blogspot blog called "Created Writings" where I've been publishing my literature. I also looked around for a place where I could share my work and find work by other authors and this seemed like the site which was most relevant to my concerns.

I'm looking forward to spending some time on this site.

This seems like a good place to talk to others about the written world. It's wild to have forums like this to talk to other people who actually read and even like to talk about it. This should be a good experience. It's nice to be with your own kind sometimes.

Hi everyone.
"There must be a place where people who read lots of books gather, right?", that's what I thought. Well, I came on this forum (after I stumbled upon it) to find out how do different people (who read books) look on life in general, and maybe to exchange couple of words with them.

Hey, I just joined today because I wanted to find a place where I could discuss the novel The Great Gatsby. I'm a junior in High School, a member of the dreaded IB program, and a big fan of English, consequently :)

I really joined because I wanted to get some feedback on an essay I wrote. If anybody would be interested, please let me know. Thank you!!!

Well...

I enjoy classics, like Sherlock Holmes and such. Unfortunately, many of the people I know do not. It's sad to see such wonderful writing be lost to a culture of pop music and slang. Many of the people I know do not even like to read. There are to many electronic distractions in this world. but I am not suggesting that I don't like the concept of electronics. There is information to be found on them, it is easier to write.

I am fond of music. Classical, (some) jazz, and musicals. I just dislike modern music. I was brought up that way.

I'm Alex from Romania. I've always loved reading, but this is the first time I've registered to a literature forum.
I read mostly classics, but I can enjoy almost any novel, really.
I love films too.
I'm not much of a poetry reader though.
I study foreign languages at Uni: English, Spanish and Russian. I've also studied French for a few years in school, but can't remember much of it, unfortunately.

Hello everybody, It's nice that we are getting so many new forum members who share with us their precious views. There should be a place to introduce yourself and say hi; and this is it. :D Come on and tell us about yourself. :D What are your hobbies? What are your favourite books? And also share with us everything else you would like to tell us about yourself. Have a nice time browing the wonderful world of books and book-worms! :)

Whilst Googling for an image of Jules Verne for my computer I came across this and thought I should join as I also have an interest in Alexandre Dumas (and you can probably guess which book I am most interested in). Most people online say they got interested in an author due to a stage play, a film or even a television series. I seem to be the only one who got interested by means of a cartoon series animated by the Japanese, made by the Spanish and whose lead character was voiced by the person who did the voice for He-Man in 2002!

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law!

Hello everybody,

At the moment I'm doing a big study of the tarot and kabbalah. I bumped into this forum and I noticed that the topics go a bit deeper than the Dutch forums I visited until now. I'm from Holland and writing a book in Dutch about Tarot and Kabbalah because in the Netherlands there's nothing written that's really good for people that are interested in the subject(s ).

Of course my book is heavily influenced by the Book of Thoth from Aleister Crowley (of which I'm very fond as you may notice). The book of Thoth is the best book about the Thoth Tarot obviously, but I'm busy to write the very deep meanings in the book in a more easy-to-read style without losing the depth of the words of Aleister Crowley. Quite a job I must say. A very helpful book to maken the symbolism easier understandable is The Qabalistic Tarot of Robert Wang. So, I'm making great progress thanks to those two masterpieces.
The only things I keep staring at is the infinite meanings of the symbolism in the cards. It's easy to name them or to add a proper meaning to them, but before you find the right words to keep it 'simple' without making the mistake to profanize the sacred symbolism... that's not easy. Even if you feel the symbols, it's not that you know them... and vice versa.

So, the reason for me to join this forum is for getting a little help with the tarot cards and hopefully give help if there are any questions about the tarot. Of course I'm looking forward getting to know you all and who knows which other subjects I stumble into on this forum.

Love is the Law, love under will,

Walter

Hi everyone,

I'm new here (ya... I know its pretty self-explanatory if im posting here). I myself am not a big reader. I joined mainly because I need some help picking out poetry to read for a contest (see my thread: http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?p=668440#post668440). Anyway, if I end up enjoying this and you have good ideas maybe I will become more active here.

(So basically since I don't read much I can't answer the questions about my favorite book/author and so on)

I would really appreciate it if you could read my thread and post suggestions. Thanks!

I don't bite....Well I promise not to leave any visible marks anyway!!! A dreamer with the soul of a poet, the heart of a lover; a strolling minstral and gentle heart out of context with the bitter and cruel world he no longer understands nor cares to, and man should be somewhere else, who wants to be somewhere else, who will be somewhere else with God's grace.

My faves are Shakespeare, Dickens, Trollope, Poe, all the classics really. Love detective books and poetry, especailly the romantics -Byron, Keats, Wordsworth, Shelly, Blake and all the other guys in the band. Also Bill Bryson, a true anglophile. Things that make me think, with political or social comment.

My hobbies and interests include: Raeding, Writing, Cars, Racing, Photography, Football, Rugby, Cricket, La belle femme, what do you expect I'm a man! Music in many forms and Old Movies.

I've come here to occasionally put some of my scribblings out there, mainly poetry. It's not to find any kind of acceptance, what comes out of me is usually highly personal but it would be nice to know it's somewhere :)

I Am a man, of controversy brewed
a gentleman, in times where manners skewed
Born, of love, under the southern sun
where death forever lives, sorrow never undone

I live in hope,
though grief has been my share
a lover of those who hate me
an end to those who bait me
the heart i touch will never know despair

To top it all I know my bane
that modesty is not mine
to that, myself i answer; oh shut-up you pain

Hello! I stumbled across this place while looking up some Shakespeare thingums... looks quite interesting.

I'm doing a degree in English Literature (God help me, I'm a finalist), which I hope to turn into a masters, and then a doctorate. I specialise in Medieval Literature, but really like anything, apart from modern stuff (Evelyn Waugh was the last great writer, as far as I am concerned).

I'm currently reading Kormaks saga, some very random (but very enjoyable) Anglo-Norman hagiography, and The Merchant of Venice for something a little bit different.

Umm, so I am semi-studying to become a teacher of the High School English persuasion. I felt ill prepared leaving high school and entering college so I thought perhaps I should become a teacher to help point students who would usually not care about anything after high school towards something better in their life. I also believe in the power of words and writing, I use it as a therapy and believe if students can get in touch with their creativity in any way, it will make a better world...I don't know.

I also figured being a teacher would allow me to travel in the summer time and work on writing and possibly any novels that I may want to write.

OhReally?

Yes... I'd go on this website a lot... so I want to write in forums too! My name is Mira, I'm going to finish my IGCSEs in a few months (I'm scared :s) then I'm going to do A-Level, go to college, get a good job, and earn some money.
And once I have enough funds I'm going to start a reading campaign to improve adult literacy rates throughout the world (it's 27% in Mali! In 2008!) putting to better use the second-hand books that people usually throw away. And then I'll make a research centre that discovers better ways to build wheelchairs and other facilities for disabled people, and also expanding their options for leisure and social activities, and then if I have time I'll start classes teaching children philosophy and political subjects, raising awareness to the world around them. But I need to pass my IGCSEs first. :)

hi to you all
i was just reading the first posts and i believe this place suits me.
let me introduce myself...
i'm in high school with great attachment to writings but i still dont know what i'll study in college, i was thinking in social comunications or something like that.
Tennis is one of my biggest hobbies, i simply love it! i can watch a match the long itcan take and especially if Djokovic and Federer are playing.
I love to read and now i realize i need to read more if i want to write; the bad news are that in my hometown there are no book stores at least none where i can get good stuff.i've been searching for books on line. i'm reading persuasion of jane austen riht now on line. it is kind of tedious though to print it everyday, anyway...
On the other hand i enjoy of music (alternative, soft rock, pop), photography, and singing i simply love to sing...i love to stare at heavens and landscapes, i considermyself like a ecstatic person :)

i didnt think i would write this much hehehe

I stumbled across this forum while doing a web search on commentary on Virgil's Eclogues for my Latin 102 class. I still haven't located exactly what I'm looking for but I think finding this site was serendipitous. It looks like I'm going to learn a lot here. I also hope to make new friends.

I'll stop back in once I get my assignment finished for Monday's class.

Hi all~ came across this site when looking for resources for the uni/college students who visit my blog. I am looking forward to taking part in conversations and helping out where I can as well as learning from others.

I love love reading though I tend to get caught up in textbooks sometimes. My resolution for this year was to relax with more novels and to write more (I enjoy creative writing).

Currently I am writing a free PDF download to help students to study better at uni/college.

I live in tropical north Queensland in the city of Cairns in Australia. My jobs tend to be casual so that I can also work from home, so I demonstrate coffee machines; am a carer for a man who is paraplegic; empty bins in offices in the evenings and in-between all this I tutor online~ phew.

This is definitly the year to maintain organisation and to persevere in achieving one's goals~ as the credit crunch has not affected my minimalist lifestyle as yet, I want to contribute to helping others achieving their goals.

Hello there! I am super excited to have joined this forum! I just stumbled across this website when I was looking stuff up about existentialism. This place will definitely be a great resource for me in the future. I plan to major in Comparative Literature and I am so excited! Most every area of learning fascinates me and basically my dream is to go to St. John's college one day because it is the best liberal arts college ever. Right now I am a senior in high school but in addition to completing high school, I am finishing my associates degree which I hope to have by May. It's pretty tough but totally worth it. Enough of my narcissism.
Peace to all, I am looking forward to some great stuff!

Hi there,
i'm a newbie here, too. My name is Claudia and i'm from Austria, so German is my first language but i try to read as much as possible in english as i like the language. i don't have any preferences in genres but i really love Stephen King, Sophie Kinsella, Patricia Cornwell, Charles Dickens, Charles Bukowski and a lot more. Besides reading i love doing things with my dog, for example jogging and agility. You are welcome to critizise my english skills as i'm always glad to learn from native speakers. if there are any questions to my person/dog/reading/ please do not hesitate to ask =)

Aloha Everyone,

Just came across this website last night for the first time which has done nothing but feed my addiction. I was up until the wee hours and now have yet another list of "must have" books. Oh sure, I could go to my local library but I learned early on in life that libraries expect their books to be returned, and that's where we run into trouble. When I was just a wee little reader my mother was constantly dragging book after book after book out from under my bed which were 2-3, even 6 months overdue. Of course the library would send notices. "Please return our books" but I denied having ever checked them out. "I don't know what they're talking about, those are crazy people". I like to consider myself an honest person but have been known to lie, steal and cheat for a really good book.

As for the type of books I enjoy, I'm all over the map. My collection of books includes mostly non-fiction history or historical fiction but I read everything I can get my hands on. I've recently had to switch breakfast cereals because I've been over and over everything Frosted Flakes has to tell me.

I'm a coffee farmer in Kona, Hawaii. I have a 5 acre farm with about 4000 coffee trees, 40 or so Macadamia nut trees, many banana trees, some pineapple, papaya and avocado. It's a lot of work but I'm perpetually wired. I had always thought having a vineyard would be good but I doubt seriously I'd get any work done being drunk all day long. I came here from Chicago about 5 years ago and have been happily playing in the dirt ever since. I will be making a move back to the windy city in the next year as my mother is just now starting to miss me and would like me closer. I thought certainly I'd have at least 10 years before she noticed I was even gone but apparently not. For the time being however, I'm up to my ears in beans. Harvest season has just ended so I have a little more free time and what better to do with free time than read, which is how I found you, my new best friends! So it's very nice to meet you all!

Hello everyone.

I am new to anything like this. I watched "Lost in Austen" and it has given me a renewed interrest of how wonderful Pride and Prejudice is. I am green in many areas but by being a part of this forum I am looking forward to learning more and gaining more interrest!!. I love the old values of those times and just love the romance of it all. I love craft work and just starting to look at Macbeth, although I am also very green on the works of Shakespear. There is so much bad news in the world I like to escape to the lovely world of Jane Austen and her wonderful characters in her books. Looking forward to taking part in these forums, and hoping I can add some input also. :)

I came across this site while doing a google search of E. P. Oppenheim, some of whose novel I have recently read. I am a middle aged man, not retired, an avid reader, and have a non scholarly interest in the period from the eighties through WWI: golden age detective fiction and thrillers, bolt action rifles, boy scouting, anarchism, terrorism, Saki, Stevenson, Kipling, Wodehouse (to make a start).

Hello to all,

My name is Robin, but my screen name is Totoro because I love the Japanese film: My neighbor Totoro. (Its a classic watch it if you haven't!)
Lets see....

I love film and anything to do with it, photography, etc. I also love art. I paint and draw. My favorite artist is Salvador Dali. His paintings always make me think about things on a deeper level which is why I love his work so much.
I also love to read, and will read basically anything I get my hands on, including big textbooks and encyclopedias that no one else cares about.

I can't honestly say I have a favorite book above all the others, because there are just too many to like. But some of my favorites include:

-A Scanner Darkly by Phillip K Dick
-1984 by George Orwell
-To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
-The Magicians Nephew by CS Lewis
-Anything by Andrew Lang or the Grimm Brothers.
-Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

I also have a fondness for children's literature. One in particular is
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault

And another beloved pastime is archery. :D

I just joined this network a few minutes ago. I got into fiction recently after having only been interested in non-fiction for most of my life. I especially enjoy Anton Chekhov and George Orwell. Reading "The Lady and the Dog" by Chekhov convinced me that there is a mysterious value to reading fiction that I had never known existed. I have a blog about topics that interest me and I'd like to make the URL my signature in order to hopefully drive some traffic there. Can anyone tell me how to make add a signature to my posts?

Hello everyone,

I have literally just joined this forum after a 'Yahoo' search and liked the look of it. I have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember and am prepared to give most genres a try. Some of the books that I have recently read are:

'Keeping the World Away' by Margaret Forster
'The Secret River' by Kate Grenville
'The Lieutenant' by Kate Grenville
'Engleby' by Sebastian Faulks
'Restless' by William Boyd

As well as reading I also enjoy languages, theatre, music and walking.

I'm very much looking forward to meeting some of you around the forum.:)

Hi everybody!
I love literature very much, books have been my best friend since... since I was near 4 years old. So, in this forum I want to discuss different books with other people. Most of all I like to read novels and Russian poems.
I am from Russia and I am sorry of my, maybe sometimes, bad english)

Hello!Even though I live in the southern neighbor of Russia, I think I can feel how precious your language and literature is!
