Hello to anyone who happens upon this post!
I am an English Lit graduate who, fingers crossed, will be continuing the journey of literary studies in graduate school this coming fall. I love books, words, and everything that falls in between those two very large and encompassing categories. I have a passion for poetry, philosophy, and postmodern lit, as well non-bookish things including coffee, cooking, and fashion. I also enjoy the classics, mythology, religious studies (my minor), and everything I study is through the lens of the philosophy of language. I'm more of a lurker, but I might engage in a discussion I feel qualified to contribute to. I look forward to reading posts from current and past users over content that intrigues my literary dilettantism.

Hello, I like reading a novel ever now and would sure love to talk and discuss theme, structure, and characters. Favorite type books range from fantasy, and a little bit of science fiction that are usually very plot focus or center around two main characters with a deep relationship.
So far I have finish reading Martian Chronicles from Ray Bradbury, and I am currently reading Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut.

Hi.. I'm Jeremy, or at least that's what people say.
I'm fairly basic - I like to write short stories('micro-mini's' I like to call them), I also am mainly into songwriting and home recording. The stuff I make is a lil odd-ball, I guess.. Here's a link to some song stuffs www.soundclick.com/j3r3my - But I like films, especially old b-movies - youtube is a wonderland of such things. Right now I'm reading David Wong's "This Book Is Full Of Spiders"(just a lot of fun).. Oh yeah, I use a lot of ellipsisessess.. Probably a sign of my mental state - type two Bipolar with a twist of Social Anxiety Disorder.. but everybody has a diagnosis. As far as work goes - I'm a plant man: I know where the plants will grow. But I'm old(43). I can remember back as far as 1980 or so. But I do read a graphic novel or comic compilation from time to time - did Hellboy week before last - illustrations were great, but it promised more than it actually gave. I like long walks on the beach too..NO, REALLY.

Hello
I joined this forum in 2006 or thereabouts. It is now 2017. I have not logged in here in a while. I somehow remembered my log in. It's a good thing too because the email address associated with this account is long gone. I mostly posted in games back then. I joined the LitNet forum because I was an English major, but I am probably the most literature-ignorant person that ever signed up for this site. Also, I remember being quite internet-ignorant as well - some things don't change. Um, I've been hanging out on reddit here lately. I remember back in the day, forum posting used to be fun. Then Facebook happened. Facebook is a big steaming pile now. Started watching youtube. Got depressed with all the mean people there...seriously, people just type the meanest comments. And some of the people put these videos up that are so...strange. They really just shouldn't sometimes. So here I am revisiting this site while I'm up late with insomnia, revisiting the past. You can't ever go back though. Anyway, here I am reintroducing myself. Not sure if I'll be around much to entertain (or irritate) people with drunk posts or not. We'll see how it goes. Hola people.

Hello everyone
I am new to this forum, and actually stumbled on this website by chance, looking for a place to be able to post some stories I have on my laptop with which I don't know what to do. Hopefully, upon posting said stories, I will get some reactions and commentaries that would improve my abilities to write even further.
My peudonym is Rocket_Sam, and while it does not have any implication with my real name, it is a pseudonym I have kept for a long time and to which I have become strongly attached. As told by my birthdate, I am 18 years old. Being new, I don't know where I stand in this forum age-wise. I write and talk fluently in three languages (French, Spanish and English) and enjoy writing a lot.
In the past, many people have told me I have a very good lexical capability when it comes to writing and that I write very well. I hope those things are true.
It is a pleasure for me to join this forum and I hope I may be able to play a larger role in this forum in the future.

Hi everybody!
So glad to have found this forum. It's nice to have a place to discuss literature. :) I really love to read, and I've recently changed the way I commute to work (instead of driving I now catch the train) and have a lot more time to read (yay me!). My favorite genre is probably science fiction, but I've been trying to make my way through some of the classics, too. I also love mystery and suspense, and if the romance is done just right I'll take a little of that in my literature, too.
When I'm not immersed in another world by way of a book, I'm working in Human Resources at my company. It's not the most exciting job, but I like it. I love food, beer, getting introduced to new music, and movies.
Cheers! :)

Hi,
I am Rebecca, living in the Middle East. I have homeschooled my five children and in the process also worked on my own education. I am slowly working through some classics using the Roman Roads Media Western Culture series for guidance, along wth a few other resources. I am currently reading the Iliad for the second time.
I have not found anyone in my real life who are interested in reading and/or discussing the great books, so I am happy to find this discussion group.

Hi I'm Ally and I'll try not to bore you,
I'm a student (waitress on the weekend, dark humorist on the full time) and obviously I love literature. I have the kind of wanderlust that can be satisfied, with the right book. My favourite book is Fahrenheit 451 because in my opinion, any author who writes portraying such a strong love for books, speaking from characters with such disdain towards them, is incredible.
Feel free to message me, I'm always up for a conversation or a debate.
I want an adventure.

Dear fellow members I was born just to the west of London shortly after the second world war. Like most Britons at the time we were very poor. Food rationing continued for some time after the war right up to 1954 just after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. I was five years old before I saw a sweet or a bar of chocolate but we sometimes had biscuits. There was a friend of our family who was an Author and he told me once that if a story was told well it could be about absolutely anything and still be a joy to read. When I retired a short while ago I decided to write a book. It will be a pleasure to share my efforts with others.

Hi, I'm Alexandra. I used to have an account here back in 2006ish (username: bysshe). Since then I've finished school, done a degree in English Literature at Oxford, moved to Rome, and written two novels!
I was partly inspired to move to Rome by my love of Keats and Shelley, and I'm still a huge fan of Romantic poetry. I love 19th century literature in general, but I'm trying to read more contemporary literature these days.
My novel "In Exile" is about Dionysus being re-born in Rome in the 20th century and creating a new teenage following. A link (https://unbound.com/books/in-exile), for anyone who likes books about Rome/Greek mythology/teenage girls joining cults and going crazy
Looking forward to finding people with similar interests. :)

Hi All -
I just joined this group mainly to get answers to questions regarding books I've read in the past. I've read a lot, so much so that I can't remember everything I've ready and I have that annoying habit of recalling a part of a story or tiny detail that relates to whatever I'm doing at the moment, but am often unable recall the title or author of the aforementioned story.
That's me in a nutshell! Have a great day!

Um hi. I'm kind of intimidated by how talented everyone else on this site is so here goes I guess.
I'm a college student without a creative bone in my body. I love reading novels and poetry but I am sadly unable to create anything meaningful myself. I've always felt as if I was missing something when it comes to creative writing. Everyone tells me that I write well and things like that, but that only applies to argumentative or analytical essays, which only require an appreciation of literature, not an ability to synthesize it for yourself. I've heard that the best way to grow as a writer is to share your work with people who are more knowledgeable and experienced than you and learn from their work and feedback, hence why I am here. None of my friends care about any of this, so I figured this was my best option. Happy to make your acquaintance!

Hi, I am Alex. I'm sifting through here for comments and observations that I may find interesting, I suppose in general that's what the internet is for. I'm sceptical of social media and suffer from a great amount of anxiety over posting so I'm trying to work up my confidence in my ability to converse and in my own writing/criticisms as I go. My research is in Literature and Digital culture currently working on my dissertation which revolves around the duality of Utilitarian/Dandy as oppositional but not mutually exclusive polarities of characterisation in metamodernism, I'm currently looking at Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke. I'm a great fan of the ostentatious and exuberant so I find a lot of contemporary pieces a bit mundane, I want to be excited and enthralled so don't expect me to read anything relating to the humdrum of existence. Although, I have grudgingly read Ulysses.

02-07-2018, 06:18 PM
I'm thialfi, a name so obscure in literature that I've been able to use it in forums without any qualifiers. Just for the heck of it, I'll put in my bid for Forum Elder at 82, though I probably won't win. My late parents were the only members of their families to graduate from college, my mother with a B.A. in English and my father with a B.A. in Journalism. With that background, I of course became.............an engineer. However, I had the advantage of my mother's home library to pick through while growing up, and also lived four blocks from a New York Public Library branch in a day when the streets were safe. Between them, I read a lot of classics and science-fiction.

Good Afternoon fellow members! I am (Obviously) new here :). The name is Rebecca, I am a 46-year-old mother of 4 grown kids. I have mostly been a stay-at-home mom (hardest yet most rewarding 'job' I've ever had!). My older three kiddos are between the ages of 21 and 26 and all in college fulltime, minus my eldest son whom is married now! My last born (whom is 20 yrs old) is a Marine (on his way to being shipped out over seas... YES I am terrified.. but I AM PROUD! :)...)
I have spent most of my life (when not parenting) creating art, experimenting with photography and writing poetry as well as short stories. Right now I'm working on a Sim 4 based chapter story accumpanied by art I've created through Sims snapshots :). I haven't looked around this forum much yet so I'm not aware wether we can add photo's to our stories or not... if not I'll prob. stick to posting poetry :). I really look forward to meeting new people and reading new material!
... let the adventure begin :)

Hi everyone! Just found this place and can't believe it's taken me this long! My name is Pat and I'm a 19 year old college student from Ann Arbor, Michigan. I mostly enjoy reading fantasy/sci-fi stuff, but I'm also a huge fan of the specific way some writers (see: Steinbeck) portray realistic fiction settings. Right now I'm reading Cannery Row which is terrific and I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for something somewhat short to read. I also own two cats and am a big fan of cats in general. This seems like a great community and I can't wait to become a part of it.

My name is Oscar and I was born and raised in Ireland. My parents are German but they always spoke English at home. My main focus is English poetry which I study in Dublin. I also have an interest in German poetry however. In the English language I find myself returning to Spenser, Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Yeats, Kavanagh and Heaney. In French to English translation novelists such as Celine rather. Homer and Virgil are obvious influences and I would like to learn more about pre-Socratic philosophy as well as Plato and Aristotle. For this reason I am a member of my university's Classics Society. Erasmus is a possibility at my university and if by that time my German language proficiency is of a high standard then perhaps I could learn Middle High German in Germany. Aside from that there is a masters at my university where you learn to translate literature and I particularly find medieval translation interesting. I am eighteen years old.

Welcome to the site, Oscar. I wish I knew more about the pre-Socratics, too. They seem so remote, yet they influenced Nietzsche, who was so important to modern thought. Good luck with your studies and again welcome. :)

Greetings fellow writer enthusiasts...I'm a screenwriter and producer and I'm here on the hunt for great stories as well as advice. I recently built a short story website and am wanting to showcase great stories. I've populated the site with my own stuff and the stories of a few friends. But I'm hoping to gather some more support here. My site is not just for short stories though, but also for screenwriters looking for awesome story ideas. Short stories can very efficiently encapsulate a great idea that can either be converted directly into a short film or expanded into a full feature. And that is the ultimate purpose of my site. What do you guys think of this idea? If you like it, please check out my site and feel free to submit a story. https://www.story2script.com/

Hello everyone.
It's a late cold night here and it's my first time here so thought I'd say hi before doing anything else.
I'm from Iran and 25 (getting old). I'm a bit of an OCD case so I always get stuck with what to say and introductions give me a pint anxiety :D
I once studied engineering but found my calling in literature. I studied English literature in college and got a B.A. I'm making the effort to continue with this major.
In fact I have done a little bit of everything from nursing to weaving and translation.
I'm in love with arts and creating things. Trying to pursue many arts simultaneously such as painting and crafts.
I also have a passion for writing, especially poetry.
I'm looking forward to learn a lot in here and meet as many cool people.

Hello!
I am Isabella; I live in America and am on the brink of entering university. I recently got back into seriously reading after many months of being a disinterested, occasional reader (mostly for classes); it feels good to dive into literature again of my own accord, and I am enthused. I can enjoy anything, any genre, from classic to contemporary, as long as the writing is good, though I am a bit uninformed when it comes to mystery, or science fiction.
Would really love to make some friends and have interesting discussions.

Hello, I came upon this website by chance as I was searching for information about a novel called Blind Windows that was allegedly the inspiration for Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I'm a huge duMaurier fan and I came across an interesting post about the interpretations of the story and the (un?)reliability of the narrator. I've written fan fiction about Rebecca and I did put a different twist on things, so I was interested to explore other readers' perceptions. I know Daphne DuMaurier admired strong women and as Rebecca was clearly her 'own woman' I thought the author must have some measure of empathy with this.

I am the story maker but due to the channel being fairly new, My work has not yet been featured.
I hope that you enjoy my stories (mostly snippets and ideas) and i appreciate all criticism
We Gamsers all have different stories
I am from the state of Alaska, and am very uncomfortable with this lower US heat
I let my brain do the thinking, and entertain myself with my own stories
I always find that in the stories i make just for entertainment, I always put myself inside.
And just a warning, my stories can get a bit intense, i think my brain has a few issues with "nice, warm and bubbly"
I hope this gets me enough recognition to get my stories featured on the big channel.
thank you and have a great day.

Hello all! My name's Jonathan, I'm an English teacher and avid reader, thank you for having me be a part of your community :)
I am so excited to be here, I live in the middle of nowhere so it is really hard to find someone to talk to about literature. I work as a school counselor and I think that my passion and love for books and reading even scares the English teachers. I love classic literature, YA, fantasy, and as a guilty pleasure I really enjoy fan fiction. I don't have many hobbies but I do have three almost adult kids that I love doing things with which include hiking, camping, and going to museums. I am not a great fan of technology so we will have to see how this goes.

I am trying to grow my collection of antiquarian books the old fashioned way, by digging through small used bookstores to find the gems at the bottom. My budget prevents me from buying them all, but I am getting some nice old hardback collectors editions that I enjoy reading.I hope to find people on here that understand the joys of not just opening up a new book, but opening up an old one that smells nice and musty.

Welcome, DM. Yes, musty old books are wonderful, and like most antiquarian bibliophiles, I've got a picturesque bookcase full of them. Some of them belonged to my ancient father and (wonderfully) still smell of the pipe tobacco he smoked in the 50s and 60s. However, the older I get (I'm getting old now), the clearer it becomes to me that it was always the ideas the authors expressed that mattered to me and that quaint old books--while nice in their way--aren't particularly important. With that in mind (and since you mention your budget), let me recommend the Project Gutenberg website where virtually any English language classic is available to download for free. (The wall seems to be the drawing of Micky Mouse by Walt Disney--the authoritarian philistines make sure public sector ends there). But you want musty old books. I know, I know.

Welcome, Leea. I'm from the American Northeast, but I spent my boyhood summers in the Midwest (not Illinois but rural Iowa) so I ended up a little of both. In fact, I have a great nostalgia for being in "the middle of nowhere". As far as technology goes, I don't think you've got much to worry about here. But be a little patient with the site. We are a small, loyal, remnant of a once large literature site which was more or less drained dry by Twitter, Facebook, etc. Sometimes things get slow here (even the moderators don't turn up very often), but we still have great conversations. I look forward talking to you. :)

Hello all... After looking over the various threads I can say I'm happy to have found this forum. I live in North Idaho and am semi retired. I do write and have published on Amazon with some success. I've become very frustrated with finding new, "living" authors to read. I pick up five books a week from the local library (following leads from The Guardian, NYTs) and rarely want to finish any of the books, which leads me to my trusty bookshelf (Nabokov, Waugh, Dickens, Wodehouse, Amis(s), Mcewan, Hemingway, Murdock, Austen). Anyway, I love reading other people's insights to great literature.

Hello, my name is Raymond. I'm a casual reader since my work takes a lot of my time. I've read a lot of YA before but I think that was just a phase. I've read most of the classics as well. I love poetry and translated Japanese novel mostly by Haruki Murakami and Banana Yoshimoto. Right now, I'm having a hard time looking for some good new titles to read. I kinda need some recommendation because it feels like new releases are an acquired taste for me and I don't want to spend a good amount of money for something that I wouldn't enjoy.Glad I found this community.

Welcome, CB. If you haven't tried him already, you may want to consider Kazuo Ishiguro. His novels are usually thought-provoking and seldom long (if work is an issue these days). If you are a 20-something, I would recommend Never Let Me Go. If you are older, read The Remains of the Day. I prefer that one, but it is a novel about people my age while Never Let Me Go is mostly about students. If you read it, though, just get a copy and read it. Don't ask around or look into it online or watch the movie because there is an important denouement that you don't want to know about beforehand. If you already know, don't worry about it, but of course the book is better without the spoiler. If you are looking for recent authors, I sympathize. Check out my reviews in the Review a Book thread. You may find something you're interested in. But generally speaking I think current writing (or at least publishing) is in a crisis.
What authors or titles would you recommend?

Hello. I am Kabby. I am reengaging my literary self after a strange kind of hiatus that may have been the result of getting hit in the head a few time too many. No, I am not an athlete, just active doing things on slippery surfaces. I wish for a relearning at what seems like the beginning of the 3rd turning of my life. I have not engaged anyone at a very literate level for quite a while. My mom used to be my muse, then a dear friend, but both are now gone from my life.
I was just noticing that the poster above mentioned "The Remains of the Day." I recently reread that, and was thrilled that I did. I have a greater understanding of the politics in Great Britain prior to WW2 than I did the first time I read it. I thank you Bum for the recommendations, and will look for a new read. I am currently read/listening to the Golum and the Jinni. I am enjoying it quite a bit.
The Golden fur boy has just brought me a ball, and I can't say no to this charmer. TTYL.

Welcome to the site, Kabby. I'm glad you liked Remains of the Day. If you get a chance, feel free to leave your comments in the Review a Book forum. I'd love to hear your ideas. By a strange coincidence, I have taken some hard knocks to the head in my time, too. Who knows, maybe concussion is causally related to an interest in literature. :)

Hi, I'm James. I tried this once, but I guess my post got lost.
I decided to get serious about my writing career last year. I published my first novel last May, and it got a glowing, starred Kirkus review and was named to their Best of 2018 list. So I figured, "Hey, I guess I'm pretty good at this. I should keep going."
I live a very blue-collar existence. I don't have many friends interested in writing - or reading, for that matter. Though they are really supportive, I tend to compartmentalize my life as a writer. I don't talk about it a lot, and I figure that probably hinders my progress to a degree.
Anyway, hope I find my groove here. I've never posted to a message board before, so forgive me if I'm behind the curve.

Hi, I'm really not that good at introductions if truth be known. The reason why I am on here, to be honest, is to get feedback on stories that I am writing. If you want to have blood shooting out of your eyes, I got great news for you. My writing and grammar is so bad, that I will have that need covered for you. So please feel free to say hello and ask any questions you feel like asking. (I'm much better of answering questions about myself than what I am about telling myself. I know a disaster in the making.)

Welcome gray. If your grammar is bad, try writing in the voice of a character who has bad grammar. You could be the next Mark Twain. On the other hand, I'm not sure you're going to find many people interested in being your editor here. But post a story--who knows? :)

Hopefully my grammar isn't that bad that I need an editor. I usually read it out loud several times before it gets published. I more looking for ideas and suggestions.

Hi All,
First time I have joined any type of forum. I’m from Melbourne, Australia and obviously love reading and literature. Although I am a 55 year old secondary school teacher, my subjects are Chemistry, Biology and General Science and I have nothing to do with the teaching of literature or English nor did I study either of these subjects at uni.
In the past twelve months I have cut back my workload and have began to pursue other interests (the teaching profession can be totally consuming) such as the captivating pleasure of reading novels. This year I have joined two book clubs and now I am entering into the cyber world of literature. One book club focuses on classics and the other on contemporary fiction. Although I still have a full time teaching schedule, I follow the DEAR time approach “Drop Everything And Read time”.
Just in case your wondering why MRI - this is my timetable code at work based on my initials which most people immediately think of “Magnetic Resonance Imaging” ie. MRI Scans but I prefer “Mindful Reading Imaging”. Why the image of the bull? This is a homage to Spanish background.

I guess things have changed quite a bit here. I have been noticing some threads required moderator's approval and looking at the forum traffic, wondering if there's still actually person/people moderating this place. Just wondering if couple of posts I made ever made online or just virtually stuck there in a long queue of to be approved posts :)

Hi. Returnee here. Have tried to register a new account several times over the past two months. I need a new account because my old email address used with 'em onty' was thoroughly compromised. I'm only taking a punt on logging in with this old account because whenever I try to register an account it says something along the lines of, "Cheers, now wait for a moderator to approve your new account". Which not only never happens, but when I try to log in with the new email address later, it isn't even recognised that I *tried* to set up an account.
Any advice welcome. I would like to get back into posting threads and comments. But I need someone to approve a new member account before I will do that.
Ta
P.S. Even navigating around with this old account, I keep getting logged out every other page change. I have to fill my log-in details again. Like now, I just tried to submit this post but I have gotten, "The following errors occurred with your submission. You do not have permission to perform this action. Please refresh the page and login before trying again". Presumably when I reload the page I will be logged out for some reason, I will log back in, and will attempt to post again. What's going on with Online-Literature?

Hi,all
This forum has a chronic software problem that affects also several of the current users. Depending on when you log in, you are automatically logged out. Than you must log in again.
Here, some suggestions from another thread:
"If you are able to log in, you are probably being logged out automatically.
If you are logged out, try logging in directly on the thread, where you want to post.
If you are outside US, try logging in with VPN on. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn´t.
If nothing of this helps, try logging in and posting at a different time
and always save your post somewhere else until you have posted them."
If nothing works, contact Logos (mod) or Admin.
Good luck!

Hi Logos. I tried to respond to the private message you sent me, but according to the PM menu nothing has been sent...
I wasn't saying anything that couldn't be published so I'm copying it below.
Thanks Logos.
I would like a new account ideally, one without a link to the old one (so new username, new email address and not linked to the old threads and posts).
I appreciate new accounts are outside of your control.
Is there an admin email address I can contact to to request a new account be activated?
Thanks
