I am an avid reader living in Hong Kong. I love sharing my reading and getting recommendations from other readers. I read for work, I read for pleasure, I live to read!
My favourite authors are: Jane Austen, Annie Proulx, Ray Bradbury, Anthony Horowitz, William Thackeray, Meg Rosoff, Charles Dickens, Margaret Atwood oh and so many others. My tastes are varied and eclectic; I especially love dystopia, world lit, YA and 'weird': anything different is worth a try - even if I don't enjoy a book I still love comparing notes on it with other readers.

Hello everyone:D , I've been reading the forums here for a couple of weeks and finally decided to join. There really is not a lot to tell you about myself...I'm currently 25 and have had a great love for literature ever since I first learned to read. I wish that I could remember the name of the teacher that gave me the gift of reading, because she helped to open new and exciting worlds for me. My favorite authors include Dostoevsky(whom I have been reading a lot of lately), Tolstoy, Shakespeare, Willa Cather, Homer, Plato, Anais Nin, Tolkien, Ray Bradbury, and honestly the list goes on and on. I am also a huge fan of music and will listen to pretty much anything, but rap(and even that on occasion). My family moved around a lot, when I was younger(and I seem to continue to do so) so my books have always been my best friends. Anyways, I can't think of anything else to really tell you, but I do look forward to getting to know you all better and to any future discourse we may have.:D

Hi, I've just joined up. I love literature and writing. I am currently reading "Sons and Lovers" by DH. Lawrence. I don't know what my favourite book or author is because there are too many to choose from. I live in Australia, married and have 3 teenagers. I'm studying journalism at university and I'll finish at the end of next year.
Cheers.

Hey everyone! I'm Layli, from America via Spain and China. I'm here because a friend (she shall remain unnamed) forced me to register and post some of my poetry. I originally found the "Poetry Post" page, and tried to post a poem, but it doesn't want to cooperate. After I sign in, it still tells me that I have to sign in before I can post any poetry. Any suggestions?

Hi, everyone!
I found this forum a few monthes back but not until today did I decide at last to become a member. I love reading, playing piano and harp, and having fun with my brothers. A few of my favorite authors are: Jane Austen, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Agatha Christie, P.G. Wodehouse, and Charlotte Bronte, among others. I like to write, but am still working on the discipline involved.
I'm looking forward to talking to people who actually like reading!

I am Jane Jane and I live in a sort of half desert, half wooded place. Sometimes calm and peaceful, sometimes noisey, at tourist season.
I am an artist, do illustrations, I am also a free lance writer for magazines and for anything else that I know anything about and pays well!

Welcome to all you new folks, you will love it here! :)
Hello there!
I'm a twenty year old girl from Catalunya (Europe). I'm studying Journalism, Advertising & Communication, I'm in my third year of university. I loooove reading; I have to thank a teacher I had when I was eight years old, who really motivated us to get into literature, and I used to read a book every day by then.
I also love cinema and tv shows, and I write from time to time. I'd love to get a book published one day (who wouldn't?). I practice Judo (I'm brown belt), I'm learning German and I teach English to three people (nothing official, though).
So, that's it. :) I hope to have fun in here!

I'm Joel, and I am a junior at UNC. My majors are English and philosophy, though my real passion is literature. I write some of my own poetry, but as I have no formal training or anything, I'll just say I dabble. My mom got me into reading in the first grade with My Father's Dragon, which is an amazing book for children, and I haven't looked back since.
Oh, and anyone who can tell me where my handle comes from gets bonus points ;)

Hello, everybody :)
I´ve just jumped in, so the first thing to do is introduce myself...
I love reading (obvious :D ) and I was looking for a place to practise some English, so... what a better one than a book forum ? I typed those two words in google and... voila... here I am ;). I´m Spanish so, although I think I have a good English level, be comprehensive if I make mistakes (and please correct me if make a really big one :p  )
I supose I should start telling you about my favourite books or something but I don´t have any favorites really, the list changes constantly...
Currently I´m reading two books: one is "Dragon Memory" by Javier Negrete, a Spanish author, so you probably don´t know about it, and the other is "The day of the ants" by Bernard Werber, not too popular either. The last ones have been "The road" by Cormac McCarthy, "The book thief" by Markus Zusak, and "The fly" -a short story- by George Langelaan.
Lately I´m into Sci-fi, but I read many different novel genres.
And, well, that´s all... I´m going to have a look around to make myself familiar with this place.
See you :)

Welcome, huihuffaker. :) I would love to hear one of your poems. :) As for posting threads, you have to be in the subforum you want to post the thread in (ie. You might just want to visit this thread: "Using the site: A tutorial for newbies." (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23208) It's a lot more clear there because of the use of images.

Hi all,
Just a little hello from me,
I'm 21 in a few weeks (whoop), a third year English Language & Literature student (mainly Literature) at the University of Liverpool, UK (EU Capital of Culture for 2008 could I just add).
I'm a big bookworm and spent a great amount of my younger days reading Science Fiction and Fantasy, I came to University to study "real" books and realised all the best ones are Fantasy of some sort anyway.
The pressures of my course are such that I dont get a chance for a lot of reading off the curriculum (after all you can always read ANOTHER book by that author, its only going to help), but I do enjoy my music and have been teching myself guitar this last year or so. I'm also a fairly proficient fencer (the sword fighting kind, not the garden variety) and am training for the Liverpool Half Marathon in March... at least I will be soon as my exams are over (5 days to go).
Can I also say that this website has been a godsend in the last few years, whenever I've had a quote in my head but couldn't remember the chapter, or I wanted to follow the course of a particular word through a novel, the search feature on this website was resorted to on more occassions than I can count. I'd never write an essay on a book I hadn't read but your website has allowed me to get closer to the text and uncover layers I simply would not have had time to do by doing a detailed re-reading of texts on top of the my normal workload.
Thanks for being there,
Laughablefellow

Hey everyone! Um, I'm new to this site......obviously, and yeah. I live in the east coast of America. Hmm, my favourite book.
I usually like every book I read, and it becomes my favourite, but some of the recent ones that I love.
The Little Prince, Frankenstein, Watchmen, Lolita, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, The Stranger, and No Exit.
My favourite author I'd say is Kurt Vonnegut, my favourite book by him is Time-Quake, with Cat's Cradle as a near second.
I also like reading Freud, which is not fiction, obviously, but yeah. Does that count?
As far as short stories go, I'm not too familiar with many authors, but Woody Allen's short stories and essays are absolutely ace, and well, I idolize the man :).
Books I'm currently reading:
The God of Small Things (I might not continue reading this one)
Watchmen (one more chapter to go!)
Sirens of Titan (for english class :-D)
Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious

hey! im new at this so it has taken me awhile to figure out where to post my poems so if anyone has any advice on how to get the hang of this im all ears. people have told me that my poems are kinda depressing so im sorry if you do not like them. i tend to write a lot when i am emotional so i think that might have something to do with my poems are the way they are.i think the reason i wanted to post my poems was to see what other people thought that werent my close friends. so this will be the test to see if they are really any good so i hope everyone will be honest about them. i honestly dont think that they are all that good but i love to write and i like to be able to express how i feel and i have learned that its the best way i know. so please enjoy :D

hello :)
My name is Briony. I am 17 and currently applying to a number of different Universities to study English Lit (what else!)
I absolutely adore Victorian Lit - the Bröntes are my favourite authors, shortly followed by Gaskell, Hardy, Arthur Conan Doyle and of course Dickens.
Browning & Byron poetry wise. Oh and a bit of Alfred Lord Tennyson.
Apart from English Lit, my other passion is old black and white films from the 1930s-1950s
Give me Laurence Olivier and Ingrid Bergman over Brad Pitt and Reese Witherspoon anyday.
If I could only save 5 things from my burning house, they would be my ancient copy of Jane Eyre, my family (had to put them in there!) my 'Sherlock is my Holmesboy' t-shirt, my Brideshead Revisted DVDs (and my Hitchcock ones too) and my photo albums
I think those are the basics anyway
I already love this community :D

I feel a little inferior to all of you!
I am a student who is absolutely in love with reading all different types of literature. I just finished reading Jane Eyre and absolutely loved it. I have never known a classic like that to be such an easy read-- though that does not mean I don't read and love them. I do!
Like many of the romantic minded, I love Jane Austen's novels. Call me a softie if you will, but they are extremely entertaining. At the moment I'm in the middle of Northanger Abby. It makes me laugh so hard.
My friends and I are trying to compile a list of greatest fictional men, so maybe I'll get around to starting a thread on that topic? If it has not already?:D

Hi everyone,
It's my first time on this site actually...so i'll just tell u a few things about myself. I'm 23, graphic designer and i work at an advertising agency. Well, music and words are the most beautiful things in my life... they take me to places free of lies and deception. I love jogging at night, having a glass of wine outside in the cold while writing a poem or something, boxing... When it comes to music, Muse are my favorite band... and Beethoven is my "guy" at night...his music is very soothing and magical! I think this is it for now... i'll leave you with something i wrote the other night (it was pretty cold:) lol)...
Wounded Soldier
Darkest corner in the room
Walls are closing on my chest
Your shadow’s drifting in the gloom
This striving ache won’t let me rest
Too much, too wrong
Too vain, too long
Your waning echo from the cracking door
Your heavy breathing from the night before
All burned within me as if I was
The wounded soldier who lost the war
Longing moments by your soul
Fighting to stand in a glimpse
And your smiling face on my wall
Is fading colors ever since
Too much, too wrong
Too vain, too long
Your waning echo from the cracking door
Your heavy breathing from the night before
All burned within me as if I was
The wounded soldier who lost the war

Hello there! I've been searching for a Literature forum :) I'm currently at college studying English (combined) Business Studies and Music, and have applied for University to study English Literature and English/Philosophy - not sure what career I'd like to persue, but anything to do with writing.. Or possibly human resources.
I love to read romantic classics (especially Bronte and Jane Austen) and books about cosmology. My favourite poets include John Donne, Emily Bronte, Carl Sandburg, Elinor Wylie, Ella Wilcox, William Wordsworth and Keats. I content myself by writing poems, stories and music and I gain inspiration from nature and travelling.
Looking forward to getting to know everyone! :)

I've already started posting around here out of excitement because I had no idea a place like this existed. Never introducted myself... I'm impulsive haha.
My name is Krystal, I'm 20 years old and I'm a full time student studying literature and having no idea what to do with it. I found it fascinating at an early age, and since then I never stopped. I love Classic and Contemporary novels. I admit I'm not hot for poetry. I love short stories though. My favorite would have to be British Literature. I look forward to getting to know everyone around here. :D

Hello,
my name is Emily and I've been registered for about a month or so, but have only posted about 2 threads. I am an art major with an imaginary english minor. I say imaginary, because this way I can take all the english classes I want without the ones I don't want to take being forced on me. I have attempted to write a book, but it fails over and over again. I mainly write short stories, or analytical essays about life. I have only taken one literature class and it has inspired me greatly! Please read my threads and critique me. I could learn a few, as in a few, I mean many things about writing.
God bless!

I stumbled on this site while searching for books online. I feel like I'm years behind on all the great ideas and discussions - having two teenagers means you don't get much computer time. My "day job" is teaching piano and voice at a local music academy. I'm married to a History prof. Lately I have been on a literary journey into the world of the Alcotts, Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne and the Transcendental Never-Never Land of 19th century New England. I've been particularly interested in discovering if there is something that we in the modern world can still learn from those dusty philosophers. I also am reading a lot of modern Canadian authors - my favourites are Carol Shields, Alice Munro and Anne Marie Macdonald. In my down time, I have to admit to being hooked on creating historically-accurate neighbourhoods on The Sims2 Game and peopling them with my favourite authors.

Isn't time travelling what books are for? As for an invasion, we'll leave that kind of thing to our southern neighbours. Unless you count sending all our good comedians to Hollywood.

Hullo fellow lovers of good literature...I'm very new to this forum and web-site...I just stumbled upon it today. I can't find my way back to a page on which some-one asked who wrote The Portrait Of Dorian Gray. I THINK it was Oscar Wilde, I could be wrong. Same person asked about The Highwayman (one of my favourite poems). It was written by Alfred Noyes.

:D Greetings everyone!
I discovered this site today and was compelled to join. At 43 I am attending a local college in the medical field. Through this I discovered that I am actually not as dumb as I believed! (Probably close though!) I have been reading some of your threads with total reverence to your knowledge of literature. Oh what I would give to take a few classes on the subject. I'm in a small town with limited resources.
I just wanted to say HELLO  to everyone. I may not have much to say in the future for fear of appearing ignorant. If someone could please direct me to some good authors to start my quest for knowledge, I would appreciate it. I'm afraid my only exposure to literature has been Koontz, King, Crichton and etc... Not the most genius of writers, but enjoyable.
I love to write, but do not have the skills or exposure to make it worth a darn!
About me: I am divorced mother of two. I live in southern Michigan and have three cats and a beagle puppy named Lilly. I am attending college to be a medical assistant, but my love has always been for reading and writing.

Hey all, new registered user here, i mainly used this site for a chance to read the classics but have since expanded my interest.
Been reading for enjoyment since i was like 8, things like "Where the Red Fern Grows" stuff like that and into my teens read mostly novels just for entertainment, nothing deep. King, Crighton, Lehane, even some L'mour. haha.
Anyways, im currently looking into poetry and this site has some decent material so I'll be here a bit.
Any suggestions are valuable to me, and and quick explaination Why you recommend a poet/poem would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Wish ya all well.

This is my first post as I am new. I am also fairly new to classic literature.
I've recently started reading all of the books I missed out on from High school
ie...Grapes of Wrath, Lord of the Flies, Catch 22... I'm sure you get the picture. Anyways all very good books even if my reading selections are a bit
"high school" I can't imagine that these books would not be enjoyable for anyone regardless of their repetoir. Anyways any:brickwall suggestions for when I " graduate from high school?"

Allright, so, hey! im a noob here, i just signed up about ten minutes ago. I was just browsing around and somehow ended up here at the LNF, and just had to join. About me, I like to write alot, anything from reviews to essays to music, but mostly poetry, especially in the form of prose. The only thing I cant really write well is fiction, mostly because I totally SUCK at dialogue. As far as music goes, I play guitar, bass, drums, piano, sax (alto and bari), and banjo. yeah, thats right, a banjo (go ahead. laugh. get it out. there ya go! =P ) any-hoo, so yeah, I also paint and do photography, with the latter definitely being my favorite medium. As far as books go, I can get into pretty much anything. I tend to read more non-fiction. Psychology, Social Psychology, Philosophy, History, and Politics make up the bulk of my collection. (yeah, i know the subjects diddnt need to be capitalized, but it looked cool, so i did it. aint i a rebel?). In my personal life, I am an eclectic eccentric and a proud dork. I have done everything in my power to go off the beaten path and build up as many experiences as possible, both great and terrible, but always beautiful. anyways, yeah, I hate writing about myself because I always feel like I'm being self-absorbed or something, so if you want to know more about me, hit up my myspace page myspace.com/crookedcigarette. If you want to add me to your friends list, you are more than welcome, but send me a message first letting me know who you are, because I tend to erase friend requests without looking at them (I get WAY too much spam from porn sites). so yeah, thats it. thats me. how about you? heh

Hello,
I'm starting The New Lifetime Reading Plan by Clifton Fadiman and John S. Major, and I thought it might be nice to find people who've read some of these books. For those who haven't heard of this book, it's a chronological list of 133 authors, beginning with the anonymous composer of The Epic of Gilgamesh and ending with Chinua Achebe, author of Things Fall Apart. Then there's an appendix of a hundred 20th century authors, in case you're still ticking and need more to read.
I'm doubtful of the wisdom of tackling them in order, but I thought it might be as good a way as any to get going. (I think I'll need a new tack by #39: "William Shakespeare, Complete Works".)
So, on to The Epic of Gilgamesh. I have both the Penguin edition, translated by Andrew George, as well as the poetic David Ferry edition, which has gotten positive reviews.

Well, to be honest I am a part of this forum for a class I am taking right now in theory. Basically, we are trying to define literature by the end of the class through readings and experience with literature. I chose this venue to observe literature, and the meaning it seems to have with the idea of translating this into a theory that will hopefully define what literature is.
As for me, I have my undergraduate degree in psychology and literature, and I have returned to school to get my teaching certificate in secondary education, english. One of my favorite authors is Raymond Carver, and among his works, one of my favorite stories is "Tell the Women We're Leaving". I have also been obsessed with East of Eden lately. I try to write poetry and short stories when I have time, although I am a little shy to share any of it. I am excited about being a part of this forum even after I have finished my class requirement. Thanks for reading!

Hi I'm from Sydney, Australia. Im a big literature fan, and am big lover of art and thought in general.
As far as fiction goes I love mystical and philosophical fiction and am allways seeking more. For example Hesse, Voltaire, Brautigan are probably my three favourite authors.
I also love critical and philosophical work and am a big fan of Neitszche, Sartre, Deleuze & Guattari, Michael Hardt, Focault, Derrida.
I suppose I love work of a spiritual nature, and am attracted to works that speak both to the deep recesses of the individual me, and the me which is part of a collective human community. I love that fusion I suppose.
I am also really attracted to beutiful forms of prose, although I don't really mean traditional modes of description, but for an example Richard Brautrigan writes what has been the most beautiful writing I have ever encountered, sentence by sentence. It doesn't seem to matter what he is talking about, its the way he says it... anyway I love it.
If anyone can ever recommend any other authors whos work sits well with my passions as described above, then please be sure to suggest them to me. Don't assume that I have already heard of them, because I probably haven't. I haven't actually read that much.
Im 26 years old and I currently work in bars. I have considered going back to university, but i find that I am more productive in my current mode.
Within 10 years I will begin and for the rest of my life continue to make a comfortable living from the proceeds of my writing.
Thats all I suppose. If there is anyone in Sydney who is into literature as much as I am.. let me know. I am starved of literary companionship LOL!!!!

im new to all of this, and in need of serious help.
ive always had a interest in literature, but i found that that was not enough to get a decent A level. I'm a typical high school student, i love my friends and my sports, but have always enjoyed literature from a young age but never really had such a talent for it. i spend most of my time on the field but would really like to get to know you guys who have a common interest in literature, and also increase my knowledge of poetry and language in general.
i have no idea about how to use this site as it is totally new but il get the hang of it

I've always had a love for the art of the story and the written language, however, it was only when literature was presented to me by two friends of mine when I was 20 that I truly discovered my passion for art and, more specifically, literature. At that time I discovered two authors that changed my life: Ayn Rand and Ralph Waldo Emmerson. At the time, I was going through somewhat of a transitional phase in my life and the works that I read of thiers was extremely helpful to me.
To be honest, I've not read many works by other authors besides F.Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemmingway, and some philosophy arguments by David Hume. I don't really know why, perhaps I'm just afraid to read anything tha possibly won't appeal to me. I've joined this site in hopes that I can find some direction in my reading. I look forward to learning something through this site and I hope that I can find a way to contribute to it someday as well.

Hello.
I registered on here some time ago, and forgot about it. But I visited again to read something about Alsous Huxley's "Crome Yellow".
I am 46 years old, a Goth, and I own a cat, a rabbit, and a large collection of books. I mainly read horror, but I also read a lot of history, historical biography and military history. I also read the occasional mystery, thriller or classic.
My latest reads are a biography of Marie Antoinette, and a book on Orson Welles.
As well as reading, I enjoy having books read out to me. Fortunately there are more and more talking books online than ever before.

My name is Sarah, and I'm currently deciding whether or not this forum is what I was looking for. It doesn't have a discussion for the author or short story which I am currently analyzing; and, therefore, I am still in need of something of that sort. Anyone know of any other forums which are more for college students looking for help/ideas in writing literature analysis essays?

Hello, everybody! I'm an author who's taking the independent route and this forum is a must-read to keep up with what readers and other writers are doing. Literacy needs all the friends it can get, and this site is doing a great job.
Hi! I'm not that new... I've been lurking about a bit, without an account, wondering whether to get one or not... then I stopped coming for a while, and now I am back with an account...

Hi all;
I just stumbled across your site this afternoon and was thrilled to find it!! :thumbs_up I love, love, love books - I'll read almost anything but books with a spiritual bent are what I hunger for the most. I also write and read poetry and am working away slowly on a book about some practices that hopefully help people to live a more spiritual life.
I look forward to getting to know folks over a cup of virtual tea and discussions about books!

Otherwise I have not seen you in any of the book discussion groups. I am trying to get involved in "Dubliners" - it is the March read. Hope I see you soon in one of the discussion groups.

It's nice to be back among people with the love of the art of literature. I have not been among peers since I departed Grand View College in Des Moines, IA to scurry about the country some years ago. In all honesty I haven't "picked up a pen" in over a year and the lack of expression seems to take its toll. In school (English, emphasis on creative writing) I was most apt to succeed in persuasive essay, prose and any sort of stream of conciousness, also comedic short stories with a darker tune.
A bit of a Frostian but not a Hallmarkian, I am interested to browse this site for similar interests and perhaps strike dialogue.
My friends are not much for literature yet I'm not much for scotch on the rocks and pass me down woolen sweaters. Between nature and merry-making (which I define as drinking heavily with fellow heathens maintaining just enough responsibility to pay bills and stay out of jail, and various outdoor music festivals), I've decided to snatch the pen from where it lay, dust her off and begin again.

I just discovered this thread, a fact which sort of introduces me all by itself. In social settings, even virtual ones, I tend to lose my peripheral vision and miss a lot of what's going on around me. I lack the social sort of 'ept,' or whatever it is that you're missing when people say you're inept.
I'm old. I more than like reading. Might be a disorder. I used to read product labels and fine print when nothing else came to hand. The good part is that I read all kinds of stuff while still very young, and continue to read widely, although shallowly.
I also end up hacking about ninety percent out of my posts before I finally post them. My gift to you.
Currently reading:
One Hundred Years of Solitude - Marquez
Simulacra and Simulation - Baudrillard
Really. It's a self-flagellation thing, although 'Solitude' is becoming rather engaging.
Hey, im Thom, reading whatever comes to hand usually, but i have a perticular passion for all things Blake.
Its great to find a place where books and learning are appreciated.

Howdy. I just joined. Received degrees in English and Latin from Univ of Oregon. Likes: Hemingway, Waugh, Phil Dick, Wordsworth, etc., although lately I've been completely immersed in physics/cosmology.
Just finished Pynchon's "The Crying of Lot 49" and am very much hoping some folks out there would be willing to engage in a dialogue/discussion. I'd like to compare notes/ideas.

Bonjour mes amis,
I am Bruce. From Brussels, at the moment, hence the nick. I am moving to France as we (I) speak, and I am also resident in Dar es Salaam for a part of the time.
I am currently reading Americans, for a change, as I realised that some of them can speak and write in English ;) . Never judge a country by it's leader, readers.
For poetry I am a huge fan of Frost, probably because of having to walk my dog in Brussels' forest every day (The woods are lovely, dark and deep). For books I am pretty much omnivorous, as one needs to be when book-shopping in Tanzania. I don't read trashy romances or soft porn, but pretty much anything else is grist to my mill.
My daughter is studying Philosophy and English & American Literature at Kent university, in Canterbury, which sounds irrelevant, but actually leads me into areas I may not otherwise have wandered into.
Anyway. I am glad to make your acquaintance.
Just a quick edit to mention that I don't read hard porn either

Hello everyone, I was recommended to this site by a person at an amateur writing workshop I attended. I have not had the chance to browse through the forum's archives, but I will be sure to soon.
I am a high school-going-on-to-college student. I have been writing since I was 9, getting my start in the exciting and occasionally traumatizing world of fanfiction. I don't know if writing is something I would like to do for a career, but as a hobby it is certainly something I enjoy a lot.

Hello Everyone..
I'm Lana from Jordan..
well, i think we are all here do live and share one world with its fantasy.. this world is called "Literature"..
I'm so interested in reading and comparing Literature in Arabic with other languages. At the moment, I'm working on comparing Arabic with English basically in politeness strategies used in some literary works. Among those works is Pygmalion by G.Brenard Shaw. although it is a short and enjoyable play, it needs alot to be done in analysing it on the base of stylistics..

Hi everyone! I am new to this forum. I'm currently a high school senior who has just gotten rejected to a majority of colleges he applied to. The truth is, I love to read, but I haven't read books (for fun) in a long time, so I've decided to join to "keep up" with literature; I'm a reformed reader! I'm a failure who's procrastinating on his essay. It's almost 5 am. I'm a failure! :(

I've started posting a little, so I thought I might introduce myself... I'm an English teacher, specialized in literature, but I take an interest in various things - arts and humanities in general, I'd say, especially philosophy and literary criticism. I've still got a lot of things to learn and books to read!
I find this forum marvellous, because it's not only about literature, for one thing, and I've already noticed quite a few interesting people! And it's already encouraged me to go and look up a few authors I didn't know!! I don't live in an English-speaking country, so this forum is wonderful to practise my language skills as well. Thanks a lot, therefore.

Hello, my screne name is Serieve, and if you'd like to shorten it, you can. My real name is Krystal. Like that restaurant that serves really tiny but delicious burgers, which I rather wish I had at the moment.
I tend to use a lot of qualifiers in my writing.
And I also tend to use "Anyway" a lot as a subject changer. Just to warn you.
Anyway, I'm just an AP student. I'm in AP Lit and Comp this year. I enjoy it, but I find that I prefer AP Language. If you had asked me last year, I would have guessed Literature was my preference, but that's just not the case, it seems. Surprised myself, a little.
I'm a senior, trying to scrape up enough money to pay for a $31,698 comprehensive fee, for my dream college. Just waiting for some of these scholarship decisions to come it. Writings skills really help with those essays. I brag to myself in private, becuase most of my friends a like "What good is an English Major, except for teaching?" But then they encounter all those applications with required essays, and now look who has the advantage.
That's okay, though. They're doing well enough, as am I.
That was a bit more like random babble than an introduction, but there you have it. >.o

Hi! I'm an american who loves to read! Not especially intelligent, I am quirky and whimsical! . . . my current favorite author is marcus aurelius . . . I'm also a fan of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, C.S. Lewis, and Isaac Asimov . . .
I've read a few books online, but never before ventured into the slightly precarious realm of these blogs (y'all love to talk!).
Liulinxii, welcome!! I was wondering, do you speak cantonese or mandarin? I would like to take a course in chinese, but do not know which is best (I'm a nurse and plan on going to China later this year to provide healthcare services to the rural areas of china). This is, of course, assuming you hail from China!
Welcome aboard, Kwistina  I hope you come here as often as you can. :D I, too, am a fan of Elizabeth Barret Browning. I have a short collection of her poems (Sonnets from the Portuguese and other poems). I wonder which one do you find the best? I personally adore A Curse for a Nation, The Cry of The Children and Cheerfulness Taught by Reason. :)
Good afternoon to those in EST. I just discovered this forum when going a search on book genres. I am currently writing an article for a local newspaper about our booksellers and wanted to get an online list of universal book genres.
This seems like a good place to talk about books and writing, both of which are of great interest to me.
I am recently retired, and this writing gig is free-lance and low paying.
Hope to find my way around the board in the next days and weeks.

Hi.
My name is my own. It's unique, eccentric and unusual... as am I.
I was born and live in Canada but on the American border, my grandmother was English, My hubby is a Scot, my oldest is a french/english bilingual.
I've written short stories about children with special needs, so they can understand what they have, and so can those who are not of literary understanding, or masters of linguistics. I did this out of need. Now for myself, I am trying my hand at a full-length sci-fi type novel. I have 11 pages and the plot thought out...lol. I'm a real newbie at writing, but I'm good, if I can get past my own grammar.
I have excellent computer skills, although I'm a 2 finger typist and look at my keyboard. My spelling is excellent, and it's rare that I reach for spell check or a dictionary, although sometimes my typing is faster than the keyboard can keep up...lol. I'm also dyslexic and rarily will you know it.
My cousin taught me to read about the age of 3, good thing as my mom can barely read. I'm an avid and sometimes a voracious, reader. I was tested twice, first at age 12... and again about 10 yrs ago. Both times I read 240 words per minute, reading every word and comprehending what I read.
I only have a college background, and that's to counsel children and youth, which I have never done. I'm a JK Rowlings... BEFORE she became famous...lol... poor as a pauper.
I have lots of inspiration in my children, grandchildren, friends, clients, neighbours, pets and wildlife. They're all quite a bunch of characters...lol.
~ Shrugs ~ that's me... nice to meet you all!

Hello!
My name's Gilly.
I'm a theatre student in an arts college. Deeply torn between my love for literature, theatre, philosophy and psychology. I thought theatre would encompass all my interests rather beautifully.
Unfortunately, the only arts college on the tiny island of Singapore has a rather lacking literature module, not because of the lecturer, but because of the lack of interest in the module by the students.
So, I found this forum in a desperate attempt to reclaim my sanity and wits. I hope to learn more about literature from the many intellectual arguments presented here.
Stuff i have read and like to read:
Greek Tragedies, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Homer, Iliad, The Oresteia
Shakespeare Comedies, Love Labours Lost, Midsummer Night's, Tragedies, Othello, Macbeth
Poetry, W.E. Henley, Robert Frost, John Donne, T.S. Eliot
Science Fiction, Asimov, StarTrek:Voyager
Philosophy, Aristotle, Plato, Socrates
Plays by Alan Bennett, History Boys, Talking Heads
Current Current Love: W;t, By Margaret Edson

Hi there.
I'm also new...
I'm currently studying literature in Aberdeen, and I'm also interested in philosophy. In particular how the two can come together in literary theory.
My favourite writers include William Blake, both the Shelleys (the romantics in general really), Joyce and Woolf, Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie, Yeats, Milton...I could go on but I wont.
The only thing I'm not keen on literature-wise are the beat poets. Although I haven't read many of their works as whenever I do I don't enjoy it and this doesn't encourage me to continue, so if someone puts forward a good recommendation I'm sure I could be persuaded yet.

Hello everyone
I'm relatively new here. I used to be an avid guest on the forums but traveling took me away from a steady internet connection for a while. Now that I'm somewhat stationary I look forward to getting more involved with Lit.net. I'm currently studying literature and philosophy in upstate New York, but of course they follow me when I'm traveling as well.

Hi all Jislani here...
Just joined today actually, came across this site while searching for A Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu.
This is actually the first Literature Club I've ever joined and I'm excited to be a member. I been browsing theough the forums and have seen so many great recommendations for reading that it's giving me a book list that I don't know how I'll ever finish.

Hello everyone, I've been a 'lurker' (not as sinister as it sounds)here for a while now,and have plucked up the courage to join in. I'm halfway through an Open Uni English Literature degree, the next block doesn't start until September, 19th century literature, so apart from that I work part-time in retail, work part-time as a freellance researcher, and enjoy reading, trying to write, and draw and paint. I like a broad range of book genres, although at the moment I've got a thing for Daphne du Maurier, and have just finished Frenchman's Creek and Jamaica Inn. Well, I'll leave it there, I'm not really one for talking about myself.
Hope to get to know you all better,
Donna

Hi! I'm a high-school homeschooler from the States. Let's see...sometime next week I hope to start learning French by translating Les Miserables from French to English; I would love to learn French fluently but, alas, am poor and have little money to spend on programs for learning it. All that money Mom spent on trying to make us learn Spanish...anyway.
I am an avid reader--I used to like fantasty and other such fluff until about three years ago, when I started reading classic novels. I believe I have found my reading niche there. Some of my favorite books are Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Jane Eyre, Scarlet Pimpernel, etc. Some of my favorite book series are Horatio Hornblower and Scarlet Pimpernel as well.
Other than reading I am also a budding artist, a very amateur horsetrainer, a casual writer, and a multifaceted obsessionalist. I get obsessed quite easily.
The places I would love to visit someday are France, England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and maybe even Wales.
I hope to learn about all of you soon!

Hello all, I'm a (yes, yes, obligatory collective eyeroll) high school girl from Chicagoland. 'Sally Paradise' is an alias derived from Jack Kerouac's alias from On the Road, Sal Paradise. I'm into Beat, among other things, of course.
Anyway, I stumbled across this forum while trying to find the best way to read Nabokov's Pale Fire, and figured it might be moar intellectually stimulating than /b/ or Totse - though I continue to stand by the latter ;) I read everything from Camus to Ginsberg to Dostoevsky to Kesey to.... etc. Occasionally I indulge in space operatic science fiction, like Frank Herbert's Dune, or monumental time-wasters like Rand's Atlas Shrugged.
I also indulge my (most likely foolish) aspirations to become a writer and a poet. In between putting off school work and watching the classics- The Sting, Citizen Kane (I'm what some may call a 'culture-fag'), I work on short stories and poetry. Surrealism has been an influence - and shortcut - lately.
So! I hope I can be a positive contributor and active, engaging member of the forums here.

so nice to find this site. it's a wealth of information for a despot like myself who generally searches old anthologies for a simple answer. poetry is my favorite genre, though i do digest almost all lit. and find i nearly always catch a glimpse of something i hadn't seen before. obviously, i am most influenced by the lake poets ( wordsworth, coleridge, southey). whether mostly from like mindedness or mutual , umm, indulgences i'll say, this is the most lyrical most cadenced for me. sorry ( i hate diatribes, too). anyway, hello, and i hope i can help someone, and they me.

Welcome to lit-net! I'm a newcomer myself
Hello, I'm Jesse, used to be Jesus, but someone wrote Jesse on my birth certificate, well, that's another story, but I'm glad I'm here. I was an avid reader, until I discovered alcohol, drugs, and whatever. But I would like to get back to reading and this place has so many of the books, authors, poets and Poems I read as a youth, I've been reading it for over a year, but today I decided to join up.

Good evening, fellow readers - what a find this site is! I've been reading since I was about four years old which is more years ago than I care to remember and more books ago than I can begin to remember. (But give me a title and I'll tell you in a flash if I've read it.) I read most things but prefer modern novels, get twitchy if I haven't got a book on the go, can't walk past a book-shop and have a shelf of yet-to-be-read books for a rainy day. Will I fit in, do you think??? I'm really looking forward to joining fellow readers (from all parts of the world by the look of it) and exchanging book experiences.
