Hello. I found this cite looking for free online literature. I think I've become attracted to the forums more than anything else. I am also interested in the fact that the Bible is not only available for people to read, but it is also not being ridiculed and/or disparaged 24/7 in the forums. Thanks! (I'm really enjoying your signature, Pensive, can you tell me it's origin?)

Popy--Hi.
Shout Grace--Glad you're enjoying some religious discussions here. It is great having the whole bible so easily searchable right here on this site isn't it?
Letizia--Ciao! Benvenuto al Literature Network. Is there any Italian lit. you're particularly into? I'm a student and specialize in English Medieval and Renaissance literature, but also read some Italian literature, mostly older poetry (like Dante, Petrarca, Ariosto etc.) that fits in with the period I work in (I'm not fluent in the language, but I can get by with a little help from the dictionary). We've got some other people here who like Italian literature and/or know the language and there's at least one native Italian here that I can think of, so there might be interest if you started a thread about your favorite Italian authors. By the way, who's the lady in your avatar? She looks familiar but I can't quite place the artist.

Hi, I'm Malkatoj. (The J is pronounced like a Y.)
I'm new here, and very happy about a real literature forum. The other ones I've found have all been dead. I'm mostly a philosopher, and also quite interested in Shakespeare.

Glad to see all of you! I am a girl grad in Lit in Shandong University, PRC. There is rare Chinese guest in this forum, I guess. I happen to run into this page, and maybe I can make some friends here, so first, I would like to introduce myself.
My English Name
As to my English name, initially, I took the conventional one as “Linda”, but it is so commonplace, as it is easy for every Chinese woman surnamed “Li” or “Lin” to choose “Linda”, so I was resolved to do something different, even original. It has taken me long time to find a satisfactory name, though I had once browse pages of name lists attached to the Oxford dictionary. Before, I was always pondering on this “headache” question as “naming” myself. I think it should represent me and can stand for me.
When we learnt American literature, “Benjamin Franklin” struck me as a successful self-made man. He was a charismatic statesman with foreign affairs maneuver, a physicist, an inventor, a writer. He set up the first library in the early America. His autobiography have inspired the youth all over the world, including me.
On the other hand, as a girl of some ambition, maybe fanciful, I am longing to fly high, to compete with anyone, free from prejudice. I would admit just lose, if it is not because of my sex. I have seen such victims. When I graduated from college, I had collected some enrollment information. It was evident that if a man and woman are on the same footing, the man candidate is rather preferred. Yesterday, a girl Graduate English major told me, some school would rather remain the post vacant until the coming of next-year man student, than a woman. That is the icy cold fact.
Thirdly, “Lin” is my Chinese family name; I respect its authority and all the history it carries on. In the ancient time, the Lins were home to the east coast of China. And since young I know, Lin Zexu was the national hero on the history record in the Opium War against the British invaders.
So I just combine these images together, to make up “freemanlin”.
After a long time, I discovered that some native English speakers are named “freemanlin” and they are man. But I make no change to my name. I hope I can combine the advantage of male with my feminine characters. In the competitive society, I hope I can stand out one day.
It’s a long introduction, thanks for your time!

Ciao Love! I am interested first of all in the XX century Italian literature, Umberto Eco, Italo Calvino, Tommaso Landolfi. But I read classics too.
The lady in my avatar is Maria de' Medici, unfortunately I don't know who is the author.

Hey, my name is Tanis. I just joined this site and am also interested in reading and drawing. I like to write my own poetry and travel. I am involved in Tae Kwon Do and have my 2nd degree black. The winter has got me out of shape though. I will only be around for awhile (living in Minnedosa Manitoba) before I head out to work across Canada for the summer, as a youth counsellor. It is good to meet others like yourself who are interested in some of the same things!!!

IN THE BEGINNING:
The fine soup of the mechanized wonders moved along the skyline, lit pink by the early dawn. Into the distance behind them rolled the endless, never-ending path to the dream of the stones. Back where the dust clouds left in their wake marked their passing; there were the ancient stepping stones. Lore described these stones as silent witnesses to the advent of the tribe. Ever since memory began, the stones were always there, blotting the horizon with their solid presence. It was forbidden to change, mar or take away even the tiniest of flints from the vicinity.
Homebone looked into the small shard of stone he had secreted from the ancient location. It seemed soapy to touch and never seemed to get wet.

Hi, I'm Maida and I'm new to this entire thing. I'm not even sure if I'm doing this right. A little about myself, I'm a high school student. I like reading and writing short stories. I also like indie films, and all types of music. I'm not really a sports fan. Every one here seems super cool. I live in Seattle, Washington and love the rain although it does get annoying after a while. I'm from Bosnia, but my family had to leave about 13 years ago because of the civil war. I've been taking French for five years, and adore the language. Those are the basics.
Hello everyone!
I'm a high school student from Sydney, Australia and i just stumbled across this site as i was looking for some good information about "Heart of Darkness". I'm studying it this year and finding it quite extensive reading (being highly allegorical).
With regards to school (which takes up a lot of my time) I enjoy most of the arts subjects like english, dance, singing, drama and french though i also like science. Outside of school i do dance, play the piano, do singing and socialise with friends. I love SHOPPING!
Anyway, i was hoping that through my HSC years i can get some good tips on my english work and i could hopefully help anyone else with the seemingly limited knowledge that i have or literature.

Maida, I have also started to learn French a few months ago and have learnt only a few words. I wish you a good luck with it. It is really difficult to learn.

The lady in my avatar is Maria de' Medici, unfortunately I don't know who is the author.
Just saw this--Of course! No wonder she looked so familiar, I must have seen that painting at the exhibit of portraits off Maria de Medici they had at the Pitti in Firenze this summer (I was there for a few weeks for study/holiday). That also explains why I couldn't make up my mind whether the subject was French or Italian (her clothing here is a more Northern style, but the painter is obviously Italian, and I thought the sitter was too). Knowing that, my first instinct was to say the artist was Pulzone, and evidently it has been attributed to him but is elsewhere attributed to Ambito di Santo and Tiberio Titi, so I guess you can take your pick. Welcome again to the forums.

Well I'll just introduce myself before I leave off for church. Where do i begin? Well, I just recently joined the literature network because i thought it'd be a fun way to meet people on the net while sharing a little bit about myself and what I like to read. So far it seems like a very nice little site. I'm currently a student, I love music (singing, going to concerts, just listening and playing guitar) and I absolutely adore being on stage wether I'm singing my heart out or I'm acting my very best. I'm polish and I love to learn about different cultures and languages. If you want to learn more about me you can check out my profile anytime :)

Sigerson--Well, it took a little Holmsian detective work to track down "Morte de Sherlock." I was amazed that nothing was coming up in my usual book searches until I realized it's actually a short story (silly me, I mean you put it in quotes and everything--I'm obviously no Sherlock). It was originally published in The Baker Street Journal in 1964 (so if you have access to a university library, or some other source for the journal you might find it there). It was later published in a 1989 anthology entitled Sherlock Holmes by Gas-Lamp, edited by Philip A. Shreffler. The best price online for that book seems to be for a used copy on AbeBooks.com according to an AddAll search here: http://www3.addall.com/New/compare.cgi?dispCurr=USD&id=130698&isbn=0823212211&location=10000&thetime=20060414211535&author=&title=&state=AK
Don't know the answer to your first query. I suppose you'll have to eliminate the impossible and whatever remains, however improbable must be the truth. Given that you're the smarter brother (that is, if your name is reference to the film rather than to the alias used by Holmes in the stories) I'm sure it will be elementary. ;)

Who I am. A woman. Who wrote a book in German. Who will have short stories come out in a few months. Who lives in the South of France. Who loves classical music, mostly chamber music, jazz, rapp, movies, gardening, walking, writing, reading, philosophy, dogs and cats and surely I forget things, like watching nature up close. I don't eat meat anymore. And I'll finish now, because I want to go out now to lie in the sun and read Schopenhauer.
Is this okay?

let me put this through a poem i wrote yesterday(its actually a modern-day cantiga de amigo):
I'm not the One
I'm the Other
I am the difference between
Nor and neither.
I'm not the sun
I am the moon
Mysterious and powerful
I am the moon.
Unspoken words
Surround me here
Unbroken streams of broken dreams
Devour me clear,
And milks me dry
Slow-poisons me
Drives a thousand steaks through my veins
And I...I bleed.
I'm the bleeder
Living my life
Looking across the sea I am
Mother and wife.
Smug in embrace
And coy in kiss
Intuitive in wild energy
Night's apprentice.
But I am you
If you are me
And what is life and who are we
In face of death?

The eastern part of the state is pretty dismal, flat as far as the eye can see and except for shelter belts, not a tree in sight but the western part is a bit more geographically interesting, the Badlands are there and there's even a few hills every now and then. ;) What part of the state is your mother from?
Hi Idril.. North dakota reminded me of Dan brown's book..
Why? I've never read any of his books, does he mention it? When I mention ND, I usually get people asking me about the movie Fargo and inquiring whether people there really talk like that.

Hi, I just registered  My name's Janet, and I'm 14. I live Texas, which, by the way, is just wonderful... one word... heatstoke. Erm... I'm obsessed with computer games, more specifically, Sims. Fanatical reader, too. Once, I was riding my bike home home from school and reading at the same time. Ended up crashing into a car... luckily, a parked car. I wasn't going too fast, so the only one who ended up scarred was me... figures  Anyways, this site looks like fun :) I'm sure I'll enjoy myself

I'm Bandini - I used to post on here, but stopped for no particular reason. I hate re-unions, like some people hate goodbyes, so I decided to post as Chinaski; but then looked at my old avatar, and thought it was more me; then I searched 'Bandini' and saw that somebody was saying that I was a good laugh (or something like that) - so I changed back. I'm that shallow and fickle! So hello to all who knew me before - sorry for the duplicity.

That's on the eastern side of the state, not a particularly pretty place but then again, if you grew up there, I'm sure it has it's own beauty. It's a great college town though, I didn't go to college there, but a lot of my friends did so I ended up spending almost as much time there as I did at my own school.

Hello fellow members. :-)
I am now a member of this group because of a dear friend in San Jose, California who referred me to the book "Siddhartha" by Hesse. Both Marty and myself have been spiritually involved with life since our youth, and since moving to Thailand 3.5 years ago, I have rediscovered Lord Buddha. Marty came to visit me for a whole month in December 2003, and during that month we both had some incredible spritual experiences which changed our lives.
After relaying to Marty about a vision I had the other night in which I could see all of life throughtout the universe as a river, and each lifeform is represented as a swirling current in this Great River. Each "swirl" appears to be separate and independent from the flow, which indicates how each of us forgets we are one-and-the-same with the flow as opposed to separate-and-isolated, making us see life from a selfish perspective where obtaining our own needs is greater than any harm we might cause in its acquirement. Once we "remember" that we came from the Great Flow we can tap into its energy to achieve good for all of Life instead of draining energy from this Life Force for selfish desires.
While I had already "seen" this analogy in many meditations throughout my life, its reappearance the other night was a significant sign that I am moving forward again, and ready to see new signs. Marty recognized this, and told me that maybe I was ready for "Siddhartha" since it is mentioned in this book about the River of Life. I have read MANY books on the Buddha's life and teachings, and this newest endeavor will dovetail with my path.
My life has been, and continues to be, one of incredible adventures, and I am truly blessed to be here living in this moment of time. I also am highly blessed to have friends such as Marty.
I hope to have many wonderful moments in this group, and I send to this forum all my best hopes that each and every one of you experience happiness in abundance. :-)

Hello All,
Well after many months content with simply perusing the forums I decided that even though I am unlikely to participate often I might just sign up in case the rare occassion of my wanting to post presents itself.
First the raw basics; I live in Australia, am 23 years old (as of today), do forty hours of unskilled physical labour a week and read slowly and distractedly whenever, my sleeping duties are not performed simultaneously with my commuting duties; or when the peculiar circumstance arises that I am not exhuasted into ennui by my aforementioned labouring. Other than those simple but all encompassing components of my life I pursue only one other avenue with sufficient enthusiasm to warrant the title of "interest/ hobby," and that is my volunteer work in an Inner Sydney homeless shelter. Although I find many other activities enjoyable I could not say that I engage in them vigourously or frequently without lying gratuitously.
Although not a prolific reader I do thoroughly enjoy the passtime to the limits which my brain can handle. Until recently I have concentrated mainly (but not exclusively) on the 19th century European classics, with my undoubtable favourite author being Leo Tolstoy. I say 'until recently' because as of a fortnight ago I decided to venture into Modernist literature -with the ultimate goal of having a deeper understanding of how all writing in general communicates its messages.
Even though I will infrequently take an active role in discussions I am looking forward to having some contact with a group a people who enjoy and seek to discuss literature as much -and probably more so- than I do.

Hello everyone!
I joined these forums 3 days ago, finally. First I thought I'll just read others' posts but there are so many interesting people here that I decided to register. You know there are not many people I can talk about literature and poetry with in my neighboorhood or university (I'm studying Business Administration, all guys have gone crazy here with maths...).
Anyway, I'm 21. I loved reading since childhood. First it was Mark Twain, then Jack London, then Yaroslav Gashek, then Oscar Wilde and........
My hobbies are:
1. Writing my own short stuff, mostly poems but a few times I made attempts to write short stories.
2. I rarely touch my guitar now, but still, it's been a part of my life too.
3. I did swimming for 3 years back when I was a schoolboy. Also took some amateur boxing lessons for a few months but decided to leave it after I was knocked out by some angry dudes while sparrings.
4. I'm also in love with geography and history. I used to spend hours studying maps and history books.
5. Another hobby is Languages. I love studying languages.
English in not my native language, I started studying it seriously a few years ago. I also speak fluent Azeri (which is my native), fluent Turkish, fluent Russian, have basic skills in German and made a few attepts to learn Latin. (but unfortunately I don't have any skills in Latin, I lack time because of university exams and my graduation diploma work).
Anyway, hope it wasn't too boring.
Nice to meet you all guys :)
Edit: Forgot another hobby. This may sound weird to you but anyway... I love collecting old Postcards. Mostly from early 20th century (1900-1930s). Some I have are unused, but most have interesting messages on the other side. One starts like this: "Mon Cher Andre...." (unfortunately I don't speak French, so I can't remember what it was about) :p

I just finished reading The Three Musketeers and I'm about to start the man in The Iron Mask.
Hmm what else about me? Love to write, but my spelling is horrible, I've been quoted that I couldn't spell my way out of a paper bag...by an english teacher, so I'll have to work on that.....but other than that just find me, I'm likly lurking around somewhere.

Hi, everyone!
I'm going to be a college graduate in just a few days! I have majored in English, and I plan to continue with a PhD and spend the rest of my life teaching and writing. I found this site because my boyfriend, also a huge dork, spends hours per day on forums for comic books, and I figured that I could have as much fun as he does in my respective area of dorkiness. I love Renaissance literature, especially Shakespeare. I am just about to finish my senior thesis on the Christian aspects of Hamlet's revenge. Anyway, I guess I'll keep this short, but I hope that we'll have lots of great discussion!

Hi Idril! I guessed you're a fan of LOTR (I think your name comes from a game... :D ). Have you also read The Silmarillion?
Yes, I have read The Silmarillion, that's actually where my name comes from, she's a significant character in the mythology, largely because of who she marries...but anyway, to put it in LOTR terms, she's Elrond's paternal grandmother and she has pretty feet, just like me, that's why I've always liked her. :D ;)
What game uses that name? Is it Battle of Middle Earth?
yunnie
05-04-2006, 09:11 AM
I've forgotten who was Idril! I remember now, she's also called Celebrindal. The story I like the best in The Silmarillion is the legend of Beren and Luthien and the story of Turin Turambar! [The game which uses that name is the Third Age (RPG on PS2).]

Hello everyone,
I came across this forum while doing some reviewing for my final exams here at the University of the Virgin Islands. I was very, very excited because there are only about 13 English majors here at UVI and most of them don't like to sit around chit chatting about literature...and I kinda do, dork that I am. Anyways, I decided to join and poke about and see what kind of trouble I could get myself into here since it's been a long while since I last appeared on a message board...
I'm blabbering...feel free to shut me up :P
Anyways, I am 20 yrs. old. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, but when my parents divorced my mother decided to take me and my siblings back to her "home," which is St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. I finished high school here on St. Thomas and now I have just finished my sophomore year of college here as well. I have a wonderful boyfriend who refuses to leave this island...so I'm probably going to be here for a while...he's just too good to give up :) I am studying to be an English teacher one day, and I hope I'm half as good as some of the Literature teachers I had...
that's all for now...don't wanna overdo my maiden post ;) I hope to have fun getting to know you all, and that I can keep up with what I've seen so far in here!

Shannanigan-- Hi there. Glad to read your nice introduction. I think you'll enjoy these forums, since everybody here enjoys chitchatting about literature (hardly dorky). Incidently, I was also born and bred in CA (Orange County), but have since transplanted to Chicago. The Virgin Island clime sounds much more hospitable! See you 'round the forums.

Hi everyone
I'm Emeric, I'm 22, I'm still studying and I'm getting a Master's degree in European Affairs in Paris (France). Last year I was in Scotland where I discovered shortbreads (well, that is why I chose this name) and Scotland of course (and it's really a marvellous country).
Well, that's not the point. I'm here now because I love reading since 9 years old. My first book was written by Enid Blyton but I can't remember the title but I assume it's not really important. My first 'real' book was Hector Malot's 'Sans famille'.
My favourite author is Charles Dickens and my favourite book is Great Expectations. I especially like British authors from the 19th century but also Emile Zola.
I think that I've said quite everything. So see you around.

Hi everyone,
I'm Kelly, 15 years old, from VN. I'm studying in a secondary high school and will take an entrance exam to attend the senior high school this June. My hobbies: reading books, magazines and comics (actually, Japanese's comic), drawing, listening to music, designing graphic, watching horror and funny films,...And have your read my title yet? Outsider 4ever...Yup, I'm an outsider in my class and anywhere I've ever been. Therefore, I don't have many friends. I sometimes walk alone in school's break time when my friend is busy with her class duty. Silently, I look at the world around me...People are talking and smiling. Sigh. No one will notice me, a shadow. I want to escape from the reality. I often find another world in novels, books and comics. In this world, I can smile, I can cry, and I feel like that I belong to that world. Have you ever felt like that?

While I would not recommend avoiding reality entirely, as this constitutes insanity, I think that you will find the LitNet to be a pleasant oasis, Kelly.

Hi! I've never been a member of a forum before, but was browsing through and couldn't resist!
Lets see, i'm from Australia and I'm 22.
at 18-19 i travelled around Australia, then got back and started saving to head around the world (albeit with a few delays). I'm SO excited right now because i'm finally flying out for China in less than a month!!!!!
From there i head through Mongolia, Russia and Estonia then onto the UK where i'll work to replenish my funds then who knows where. France, Italy, The Czech Republic and Iceland are my priorities, but i'm not making any plans that far ahead yet.
I plan to go to university eventually and study psycology and sociology, but literature is my main interest.
So whats everybody reading at the moment? I'm nearly finished 'Among The Russians' by Colin Thubron. I found it both informative and incredibly engaging. His latest novel is 'In Siberia', which is also great, but i preferred the former.
I'm thinking of doing the typical thing and taking 'War and Peace' on my travels with me, but i figured it was logical considering i rip through novels so fast, and i adored 'Anna Karenin" (And as you can probably tell i'm in a Russian mood at the moment).
Anyways, thats enough blabbing for now. It's so great to meet you guys and hope to get some awesome correspondance happening!
Lots of love, xoxoxo

This site is very wonderful. It is very nice to see all of you interesting people, And even better to see so many people in love with Literature.
first off, my name isn't Asa Adams, just a Pseudonym, lol names Jamie
I have studied literature for about 9 years now, starting in grade 9, and throughout Highschool. I loved Lit so much that in grade nine i created my highschools first non-educator run book club called the "Pillars of Literature."
We studied the fundamental stepping stones to great Literature. Such things like Homer's Odyessy and Virgil's Aeneid, some of the first known Novels/epics. slowly we moved up the scope to conrads "Heart of Darkness" and Orwells "Animal Farm", and "1984."
After Highschool I enrolled into Trent University. I joint majored with a major in English Lit, and a minor in philosophy. I earned my BA in English Studies, and i achieved my B.ED in Highschool english and philosophy. I am yet to teach, however my love in life is writing. Teaching aside, i love to gather with friends and discuss philosophy, religion, life, and all that jazz.
Two of my good friends opened a bed and breakfast together, and i was hired on as their Gardener. there i lived for a few years Gardening perennials and vegetables, and above all wrote and published a few poems and one short story.
Once again, i am glad to be apart of this great site. looking forward to chating up with you fine people!
Cheers.

Hi there everyone,
I've just joined the forum so I'm popping in here to say hello. I've looked around and it looks like there are heaps of great discussions happening, so I look forward to joining some of them.
By way of introduction, I am a book and reading lover (who never seems to get through her pile of 'to be read' books!) with a wide range of literary interests. No particular favourite genres.
Cheers! :D

Hi Dilettantia, welcome to the forum! (Difficult but lovely screen name)
Thanks Pensive, that's very sweet.
Normally I would probably just use the name Dilettante, but it apparently was already taken in this forum, so I improvised! (But I think I like it too)

Hi!!! I'm kinda new here. I think I already posted something on here, but I can't remember. Here is a bit about me...
I am a hot headed Italian/Irish chick. My mom is my best friend, but I have other friends, of course! I am 16 and my favorite band ever is Apocalyptica. They merged classical music with metal. My other favorite bands are the Beatles, Nirvana and R.E.M.. I used to write a lot of poetry. Not so much anymore, though. Right now I am working on a story, but I haven't came up with a name yet. I would like to give a summary, but am too lazy! :p If you wanna know about it or read it, PM me. It's about vampires...not cuz I am obsessed with vampires like some people but cuz they make good characters for stories because they are so flexible. My favorite color is pink and I'm a pisces. Check out my myspace (http://www.myspace.com/bendystrawsrock) <---- click on that! Well...that's all I can think of! Oh, look at my profile too! It's cool!

Hallo every one,
I am new and hopefully more than temporaily here... I have just seen this page today, so none of you people know me (yet, I think??)..
I must admit that I would have love spending hours at this forum during my teens... It was during the time were I lived life only for reading books, but also a time where didn't have anyone to share all the beautiful experiences with... Today my world looks a bit diffrent - literature is now something I enjoy whenever I can...
but a bit about myself..
I am a 21 years old girl from Denmark... I got my passion for books through my wonderful grandmother (the old lady educated herself by reading great poets... her house is fill with books, and whenever she buys new books she hides them somewhere secret.. she does that because my rational Grandfather believes that she spend too much money on books...
She get her satisfaction in the end, when she can answers my grandfather questions with a "no I had that one for ages")
Presently I am a student, at what you might compare to college... but the danish school system is quite unique.. so can't really explain it in an easy way..
Besides that I have spend some years play artist.. attending artschools both in Denmark and abroad...
I think I want to spend my future on studying 'religion humanities' as a way to work with immigration..
My master plan is to help open up for a lot of cultural differencies within the local society (you lot have probably heard of "the danish cartoons" and know that it is needed in world of globalsation)
am looking forward to getting to know you... but more importantly your ideas and point of views
love..
