It is nice to know that there are a lot of people who share the same views as you , I have always been intrigued by words and their power. I would love to be a writer one day and this is my first step towards it. People say that world is becoming a global village and a small place because man has conquered distance and the technology has got us together, but i don't agree to it .I think that we are moving away from each other as is the universe and we don't have much time to actually be there for some one, infact we getting lonelier.:)

Hello all!

I am heard about this forum through another forum.

About me... well, I, like everyone else here, love literature. I love to read all sorts of types of literature, analyze them, and talk about them. I also love writing my own pieces.

I am a high school senior and cannot wait for college. Dance is my life, and everyone will be very aware of that fact as I post more.

I look forward to meeting everyone and hope to contribute well! ^_^

Hi I am a British New Zealander. I have a bachelors of Fine Art and have done a post grad (PGCE) in art and design. So why am I here? I can draw well but, being an art history student in New Zealand I prefer abstract art like Dan Flavins, Frank Stella and photography. I am planning to do some work but it takes time.
Well besides art painting and photography I have a passion for reading. I am reading Sylivia Plath which I stole from the staff room table a few weeks ago.
I work as a supply teacher in outer Essex. I do a lot of supply for English, and languages , French,Spanish and German. Yes and I speak bloody Italian and no ones does it!
English is great to teach. Now I want to get some enrichment for myself. I promised to do the literacy paper at Cambridge University, but cannot find the time but still this job keeps me immersed with the classics and I love all the poetry.and the quotes sometimes stuck on the walls.

Here's one from me:

Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you. - Carl Gustav Jung

If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, weare not really living. Growth demands a temporary surrender of security. It may mean a giving up of familiar but limiting patterns, safe but unrewarding work, values no longer believed in, relationships that have lost their meaning. As Dostoevsky put it, 'Taking a new step, uttering a new word, is what people fear most.' The real fear should be of the opposite course. -Gail Sheehy

Just got registered. I was looking for some inspiration for my classes and decided to hang around for a while. I can relate to what Virgil said in his intro piece. I've got over 200 college hours myself. When I went to college, my life was laid out in front of me. However, the longer I went, the less sure I became about what I wanted to be when I grew up. I finished college with a B.S. (you can interpret that however you want) in Management with a minor in business. I went to work for about a year and then one evening in July I was sitting on Top of the World in Rocky Mountain National Park, watching the sun go down and I realized that what I was doing wasn't very fulfilling. There had to be more to life. I quit my job, moved back to Oklahoma and re-enrolled in school to work off a degree in English and education. I have been aggravated plenty by what goes on in the world of education but I have never looked back and wished different about what I do in the classroom. Do you want to know what is really funny about all this? I've spent the biggest part of my career teaching computers! I've finally found a position where I can have the best of both worlds because not only do I get to teach computers but I get to teach English as well. I know that my bank account will never be very big but I'm rich beyond my wildest dreams when one of my students I haven't seen in ten years gets in touch with me and tells me that I was an important part of their life. Teaching truly is the only profession that allows a person to live forever. Long after buildings and monuments crumble and our own bodies turn to dust, the things that we pass on to our students, not only the lessons but also the advice, is kept alive for the next generation.
Schwapzure I too teach supply teaching I have just joined today. I totally agree with you --teaching is the most rewarding experience I teach a lot of English and have been using this site inspiration.I hope i can meet more like you-- you have said my thought aloud--inspired

I'm just now reading Anne Brontë's Agnes Grey and just today purchased The Life of Charlotte Brontë by Elizabeth Gaskell. I was just surfing around for information on Elizabeth Gaskell when I found your site.

I'm a bookseller for a major chain. I live in Southern California with my husband of 28 (almost 29) years. Our son is a fourth year student at UCLA. I'm first and foremost a bookworm, and I feel I have fairly eclectic taste. It's probably obvious that I love the Brontës and their ilk. (I'm more a fan of Charlotte and Anne than Emily).

some favorite titles:

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff

The Secret of Lost Things by Sheridan Hay

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith

Following the Equator by Mark Twain

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

(I'm sure I'm missing some favorite titles. I love so many books!)

My favorite genres are literature, popular fiction, travel literature, books about books, biography, and mystery.

I think I was born to be a bookseller. I love my job! I even handsell books to friends when I'm not at work, lol!

I'm also an avid Bookcrosser. (If you've not yet heard of bookcrossing.com, check it out!) I am MissTree on Bookcrossing. (If you join, I'd appreciate being listed as the referer.) We are a very fun, eclectic group of people whose main hobby is to spread literacy and good vibes by leaving books (labeled with an identification number) in public spots for people to find. The finder may remain anonymous. The hope is that, whether anonymous or not, the finder will write a journal entry describing his or her experience with the book. It's even better if the finder releases the book in his turn for someone else to find and help the book continue its journey.

I guess that was a pretty long introduction, lol, so I'll stop here.
hi bookseller I like your choice of books

Greetings to you all!:) My English literature teacher gave us the adress to this site and after a while I've decided to join the forum as well.
Well, what can I say about myself? I am a student-in my first year, actually-and I am studying English and Spanish language and literature. I have always loved reading quite a lot and some of my favorite authors are J.R.R. Tolkien- his books are actually one of my biggest passions and I read The Lord of the Rings twice a year- J.K Rowling, Rosemary Sutcliff-although I could not find too many of her books:( -Ray Bradbury and Arthur Conan Doyle. I also spend most of my time writing both poems and short stories as well. I am very glad I have found this site and I am sure I will enjoy myself here.
Once again, greetings!:)

Just signed up today, figured I'd introduce myself. I'm Brad... I'm 17 and in my first year of college. I'm studying what basically equates to English Lit, and I love reading. My favorite authors actually aren't really of the "classic" variety, but nevertheless, are Nick Horny, Kurt Vonnegut, and Anthony Burgess. And George Orwell, but I've only read 1984 and Animal Farm.

My other main interests are in film and music. My favorite film is The Royal Tenenbaums, among many others, and my favorite band is Porcupine Tree, among, again, many others.

Hope to have a fun time here and get to know some intelligent people.

I am an English person, looking to anyone who knows a poem that my Granmother used to receit to my family when we where little...... it is about an Elf that sits on the uppermost shelf of the panty.... he eats all the christmas pudding or cake and is a little worst for wear as it contains brandy. I also have another peom that is called 'Little Nancy knockabout'. It goes Little Nancy knockabout wouldn't wash her face, covered with sutt, mud and marmlade, 'oh what a disgrace'. Until on fine day a coal man can knocking at Nancy's door and said "oh, Nancy for my wife I would adore...... but Nancy screamed and ran away and ordered 20 bars of soap that very same day...

There is lots more (I believe to the latter poem). If anyone has any ideas, please reply.... Thanks

Hi, after what I've read, it's really awesome to join u guys.

o.k, let's begin,

I'm not native English speaker :D. BUT, i love Literature, that's why I'm studying English literatures.......;)
i can remember ur site, from the first beginning in my major, when i was looking 4 some simple, short English Learning definitions, but now I'm looking 4 really good analysis and cool friends, i guess it's here!!:p
i write English poetry, and it was my beginning with English, i have bad and good ones, and it REALLY released my depression.

BUT
My problem, which actually enjoyable one!!!:D is whatever i study or read about capture my mind, then i go searching and looking for every detail that related to that material, so i can give correct point of view about that, and since i become so busy about finding useful info, the exams got close and i still didn't read my printed lost (around the room) papers and researches. e.x the last exam was (Romantic Poetry) , i was reading that papers all the night, and @ 8 a.m when i was supposed to be in the exam room, i was there, in the far corner of the building reviewing the important point and themes of Blake and Wordsworth.
i was late for 15 minutes, and wasted extra 10 minuets to recollect my ideas on the draft sheet, uh:sick: . the time ends up with my last full stop.....:D , i couldn't even review my answers, but come down guys i got really good mark in that exam,:bawling: !!!!!!!
but the doctor said that's great job coz i had the highest mark in my group!!!!:D
and here i go on mostly every exam: Shakespeare, Drama, etc.

i need ur help guys in the make up exams, don't let me down, PLZ.;)

i wish that's enough, trouble explanation, it wasn't just saying: hi.:D
feel free to ask me any thing guys...!:p

Hey, I'm new here. I kind of came about this forum by accident. You see, I was doing a research project on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and I came across this forum. Anyway, I am glad to be here, speaking that this is one of the few places I can talk about books freely. Where I go to school, that isn't really cool and I'm one of the cool kids, so.... Yeah....

I'm not saying that being nerdy isn't cool, actually, I plan on going into a career in theoretical physics, so I am one heck of a nerd.

Anyhow, I just wanted to say hey and tell a little about myself. If there is anything in particular you want to know, feel free to ask. :D

Hi all. I'm Amanda, and although I have a BA in English lit, I haven't really done that much fiction reading as an adult. I'm hoping to change that. In June, I hope to join you on your Greek book of the month discussion.

My turnons include science writing and science fiction, as well as Middle Eastern literature and post WWII American and British fiction. My turnoffs center around the Victorians (even though as a lit major I'm supposed to revere them.)

I started a blog: http://readingalone.blogspot.com for the fiction I'm reading. It will be slow-going for a while, as I have a pile of nf to finish up, but I hope some of you will visit, comment, and enjoy what I've blathered on about.

IRL, I'm a belly dancer with a Moroccan catering service, and I enjoy knitting, spinning poi, and playing World of Warcraft :) My favorite job EVER was as a science editor for a newspaper, and like most readers, I'm writing a novel that may or may not ever be published. I look forward to discussing books with you all!

Hi there! I'm a new member trying to find my way around and looking for a Maupassant short story where the author discovers St Tropez when his train breaks down. I'm in the process of writing an article for a newspaper - my first! Some chance eh!! Anyway, is there anyone out there who can help?

Janine

Welcome Janine11!
Unfortunately, I can't help you with your article, since I am not very well read on Maupassant; however, I do like the author very much and have read some of his short stories. Do you have an idea of the name of the story? I have a compiled book of his work and I might have it included. Also, on this site there are listings of authors - many, many - just maybe, the story is on here in the full text.
I just wanted to say hi, basically and welcome you to this forum. Also, I noticed we have the same user name, spelled the same way, mine minus the 11 of course. Mine is my real name.
Have fun browsing around the site, and hope you get some help with your newspaper article.

Hello!

I hope that everyone is doing well! I only just discovered this place because my British Literature professor told us that we were going to have a cumulative reading quiz for our final, so I decided that I needed some practice matching three sentences to random authors. My search led me here. Simple note about me - I'm a Writing Intensive English major at Marquette University, and I love books so much that I decided to be an English major because I wanted to work with books forever, no matter how un-lucrative that might be. I want to go into publishing after graduation and I want to talk about them all the time. I'm happy to be here!

Hi Janine - thanks for getting back to me. It's my real name too! I found the site with the short stories but was hoping I wouldn't have to read them all! The one's I tried weren't it! I liked what I read so it'll do me no harm.

I very much liked the sentiments expressed in your quotes attached to the lilac - I can almost smell it! Not many people seem to allow one to be wild these days. I mean wild in the free, unfettered sense rather than in the more modern usage of the word, which I am sure is what was meant too.

Well here goes, Maupassant story no. 1.

Hello again, Janine11, You are welcome. That is great; I don't think we have another 'Janine' here, not one that spells it, as we do...it used to be such an unusual spelling and now I see it adopted more and more...in fact, last night I watched credits rolling on a film, and noticed someone on the staff spelled it our way.

You may have misunderstood me, about the D.H. Lawrence short stories, if that is what you are referring to; we start a new one every month, so if you check back in the thread around the 1st of next month, you may see a new story posted. I say this because next month I might be a little slow posting one; I am expecting my first grandchild any day now. I hope it is soon, for mother and baby's sake... 9 months feels like forever. The point is you need not catch up and read all the stories we already read and discussed. No, those are done with; but of course, you can always try reading them later on your own or at your leisure. I recommend them all highly.

Thank you, concerning the quotes. Lawrence wrote so many, that it is hard to pick just one or two. I was actually going to change them, when I changed the photo to these lilacs....so funny, when I see them, I feel I can smell them as well; power of suggestion is strong, isn't it? They are my favorite flower! Before this lilac photo, I had a drawing of a bird's nest with eggs; that fit the one quote well. Before that I had something else...oh yes, a painting by Georgia O'Keefe, who was good friends with Lawrence, and painted "The Lawrence Tree". Lawrence used to sit below the tree and write or sketch. You can find that online, but another Litnetter pointed out to me, mostly all of the ones online, are hung 'upside-down'! Is that a riot, or what? I think I had it in my signature that direction, also. The painting seems to work any direction.

Well here goes, Maupassant story no. 1.

Good luck with your story. I liked any Maupassant story I have read so far. He is a very interesting author.

To all the newbies! Welcome to Lit Net; I know you will all love it here!

Hi. I just joined yesterday, and still getting to know my way around in here, yet very glad to have found such a wonderful community as this is.

I am a senior at the University of Texas in San Antonio. I will have a BA in Education (Interdisciplinary Studies) in less than 14 months. Then, I will have fulfilled my life-long dream of having a good education behind me, as well as teach elementary school.

I am not going to be taking any summer classes this summer. Instead, I plan to emerse myself into literature. My reading and comprehension is not up to where it should be so I plan to read, read oh and read some more.

I hope to meet kindred spirit friends here who also share a passion for reading, and writing. I write fiction to improve my writing skills. I don't write to get published. In fact, I have a hard time sharing my writings with anyone, but I'm getting better at that.

Anyway, hello everyone!

Hi everyone! I am the proud mother of two handsome little boys and my beautiful baby girl. I am a stay-at-home mother, domestic engineer, and full-time online student majoring in psychology. I have 10 classes behind me while juggling a five-year-old, four-year-old, and a two-year-old. We read a lot of books, especially since my five-year-old learned how to read. I live in the country in Pennsylvania, which is beautiful and the best place to raise my children. My husband and I have been together for nine years but soon-to-be ten years, he is the love of my life and supports me in every possible way; he is a hard worker and is proud to be able to have me stay-at-home with the children.
We love the outdoors, my boys are awesome fishermen, they have caught huge walleyes, bass, carp, and bluegills. My husband's passion is fishing and has passed that on to our children. My passion is my children and making sure they have everything they need, not materialistic things. My second passion is school, I am very dedicated in earning my degree because I want to work with children, Child psychologist.
Hi to everyone and I hope we will be chatting soon.

:) Hi everybody I am a new member here ...I want to introduce myself..

First, I have got to know this wonderful site while I was searching for a material for my prose class. Since that time, I determine to be one of this wonderful "warm-book community". And this is what has happened!!

I am 22 years old. My first language is Arabic. I'm working as a Demonstrator. I teach English Literature. I'm now preparing to enroll in an M.A program in English literature-Prose.

I love reading novels very much...I read 3 novels per month. My reading reanging from 18th C's novels to temporary ones. I appreciate ,particularly Comparative Literature.

Romantic novel is a pseudonym, I chose it out of my love to novels.
As for my Signature, it is taken from the international writer Paulo Cohelo's novel" The Zahir". His words really have a strong impact on me,,,because I feel they are very real and tangible.

I do not know what else do you whant to know but I hope you will enjoy my presence here between you..

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to share you my love of " English Literature"

Thank you
Thank you

Hi, nice to meet everybody.

As for me, reading and drawing are my two favorate hobbies. I love horseback riding, but don't get the chance that often. I'm also pretty into computers.

I'm about to start college, and I don't know my major yet. I'm just starting out with gen. eds. I'd like to do something with literature or language, but I've yet to find a career I like. I speak quite a bit of German and I'm considering trying to learn some others...

Um... I love reading. My most recent book obsession is [I]1984[I]. And I have to say, George Orwell is a genious...

Anyway, glad to meet you all!

Hi folks - how's everyone doing? I'm not very well-read, but I'm trying - I'm glad to have found this place! I just finished The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway yesterday (2nd read), a novel that hits closer to home these days than I'd necessarily like, and earlier on today started Robertson Davies' What's Bred To The Bone. Love Davies' writing!

I try to read the classic 'classics', but as well veer off here and there. I don't get a chance to read as often as I'd like, but hey, there's still a lot of life left to live for me, so I'm doing okay. :)

Hello everyone..
There is nothing impressive about me, i do not have a degree in engineering, i am not studying law and i do not plan to become the next Jane Austin..
BUT
I am 15 years old, a lover of books, renowned for my sarcasm and a real thrill seeker. Haven't done much when it comes to seeking thrills but i plan to!!
I've jumped of a 11 metre cliff so far and swam with dolphins (in the ocean not a theme park) about 200 metres from shore. I'm going diving with sharks in December :D woooo
I'm planning on taking three english courses in college
modern world history, religion and philosophy, maths and physics.
I have no idea what i want to be when i grow up..
My best friend is going on foreign exchange in September for a year. She is the most awesome person you will ever meet! When she comes back her parents are moving to Europe for half a year so she is living with me (wicked huh?)
My other best friend is my brother (yeah.. strange huh?) anyway
two days ago he moved to Europe for two years
I've been very depressed about that but now i see he is going to have the time of his life and i should be happy for him (he is 18)
My life is music, really only stuff from the sixties and seventies.. Bob Dylan is my husband *cough* i wish *cough*
The Who rock and so do Simon and Garfunkel.. Rolling Stones too.
My favourite book is Gone with the Wind
second favourite is Pride and Prejudice
my favourite actor is Al Pacino and my favourite movie is Across the Universe.
This is my life.. and i love it.

Thank you for listening to me!!

Bonjour!

I enjoy all kinds of books, from modern literary to speculative fiction. I currently attend a preapprenticeship painting program (not the artsy type, but the house renovator type,) though I will be enlisting in the French Foreign Legion within the next 5 years or so.

If 15 years in the Legion doesn't kill me, I plan to become a novelist after I retire.

My other interests include domesticated rats, drawing, and role-playing games.

Of course, Poe's 'The Raven' was a sensation to read for the first time. I have a collection of his work at home. I am a member of Deviantart.com where I post my work (see my profile). My work explores the subconscious with a hint of horror, dark twists etc. Its not similar to Poe in how it is written.

On the subject of horror, I've never read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein yet and i've just purchased a copy. A.K.A 'The Modern Prometheus'.

Thank you for the warm welcome :D

Hey everyone,

I joined this site because I loved reading as a child and would read anything I could get my hands on. As I got older, the quality of many books appeared to decrease rapidly; I probably just raised my standards of quality. Anyways, what with preparing for rigorous classes, I lost my passion and the time for reading somewhere along the way. I am interested in participating in the book club part of the forum especially.

My favourite authors: Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, sisters Bronte, George Eliot, Honore de Balzac, Stendhal, Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Leo Tolstoy and Mikhail Bulgakov. I like also historical books like Waltari's "The Egyptian" or "I, Claudius" by Robert Graves. My second hobby is watching movie- I'm fond of movie directors like Kubrick, Forman, Lynch, Tarantino and Allen. I hope I'll meet here a lot of people with mutual interests. Hey!

I just found this forum and signed up a few days ago. Great place!

I am from Finland, Helsinki. I love books and reading and do a bit of writing, but not more about that issue, yet..

Hmm, I am 40, single, live in the city center of our beautiful town with my dogs. I work a little bit, but rest of the days I spend among books and writing, and try to travel as much as possible.

I got a lot of favourite books, but " Wild palms" is almost the greatest. As is everything by Ondaatje, just finished " Divisadero" a wonderful read I had with that one.

Ok, now you know something about me.

Have a lovely day!

Hi everyone. I'm already a prolific writer, I've written a few novelettes (though I refer to them as short stories) and am working on a series based on the card game Magic: the Gathering. I find writing a creative (of course) and valuable art form that anyone can enjoy adding to or browsing in.

I like Anime (Japanese cartoons, like my avatar) and playing video games and reading. I'm a high school senior, looking forward to my last year. Though I[m not used to writing stories as short as the ones on this forum, it'll be a new challenge for me to look forward to.

Hello! :) My real name obviously is not gemini20, but of course, that is how you can refer to me on here.....lol. I am pursuing a bachelor degree to be a high school English teacher (I'm in my third year of college, and I have 2 more years to go), but I want to be certified for K-12 grade in teaching English. I am a Christian. I have trusted that Jesus' death on the cross was the payment for my sin (bad things I do) and that trusting only in Jesus' sacrifice on the cross and asking God to save me by trusting in Jesus alone(and not in the works I do, going to church, or baptism) are enough to get me to Heaven after I die. I believe that Jesus rose again (defeating death) after He died and was buried. I realize that this is a literature discussion (and not a religious discussion forum), so literature thoughts are the topics that I will generally stick to in this forum, and I am not going to be hounding people about my religious beliefs since this is not the place for it unless people just want to ask questions about stuff. However, this is an introduction portion so I like to tell people I am a Christian since that is what I want to be remembered for wherever I go. I welcome advice that people might have for me as far as English certification, study, and teaching methods. Thanks!! Hope ya'll have a good day!!! :)

Hi! I'm 20 years old. I am currently studying English Literature as my major in University (2 more years to go), with plans to continue into Grad school. Besides reading and writing, my biggest passion in life is travelling - I've been all over Europe, Africa, and the US. I am a vegan (well, lactose intolerant vegetarian), ballet dancer, scorpio, atheist, Norweigan (family is from there), and runner. I also love fine wine, the outdoors, and spending time with my family. My favorite bands include Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Beatles, and Bob Dylan. My favorite movie is The Godfather (Al Pacino = love). Favorite authors include Shakespeare, Victor Hugo, Chaucer, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot, Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll, and mannnny others. And I pretty love life. Sooo that's me in a nutshell! <3

Heya,

Found this site when I googled "classic literature". A few weeks back I was searching for a forum site just like this, and now I've found the perfect one. =)

So introduction...

I'm turning 17 this June 23rd. I do independent home-study in Hong Kong which is kinda rare. Hopefully, I'll finish high school at the end of this year. I have loved reading ever since I started reading books. But since I started my first year of secondary school, I started to love literature. One of my fav books are Catcher in the Rye, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Notebook, Cannery Row, and quite a lot more. I mostly read classic lately. Although I don't mind any genres.

Currently reading: As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner

Ello, all.

I don't really remember how I found this site, but the first thing I used it for was to read Vanity Fair...I'll be around a lot as I can rarely get to a library and most of the books I'm looking for are on the site.

I'm big on reading but I didn't make the leap from the Teen Fiction section of my local bookstore to the Literature section until sophomore year of high school (which I just finished). I'm on the Academic Team at my school, and I specialize in English, so...I kind of needed to start reading the heavy stuff. :P

I'm in the International Baccalaureate Program, and I like to read, write, draw, dance, and sing. Big on the fine arts. ;) I'm known to be a big grammar nazi, as well.

I guess that's all. I'll see you around!

Hello all my real name is Jonathan, I am from Tx, USA. My hobbies are girls, drums, philosophy, poetry, paintball, video games (in particular Age of Conan), and having intellectual arguments... I first joined this site for poetry reasons but there seems to be a very good basis for people who enjoy philosophy and I have made a transition to the philosophy thread, but I also read up on the poetry thread sometimes. Hit me up if you ever wanna jam out or have any interesting thoughts that may revolutionize western thought as we know it!!!

"These forums were created to promote reading, sharing, and discussion of literature, poetry, philosophy, teaching, religious texts, and writing. ..."

Sounds like a great idea - and so I joined.

I found this site after entering "understanding Ulysses" on the Google page. I am beginning to begin with Ulysses (by Joyce). A search on Wikipedia indicated that one could not begin to understand the Ulysses document (not certain if it is a novel?) unless you have some understanding of Homer's Odyssey (I guess Ulysses is a latinized "Odysseus"). So far, that strategy seems to be working - but I feel that I will get more enjoyment from my efforts if I collaborate with others to understand.

til - later ... Dilettante_I_am

I'm actually not "new" in that sense since I joined about a month ago...I only just activated my account so I can post though. However, prior to and during that month, I read many of the posts of fellow users. I joined this site in the hopes of tracing the origin and author of an older "I am Canadian" poem, if one might call it that. Can anyone assist me with this?

Thank you in advance!

Richarda

I am a Canadian.
I am the Primitive Hunter who first crossed the Bering Istmuth from Asia.
I came seeking game and never knew what I had really found.
I am the lonely explorer who ventured the edges of a new world.
I am the people of coast and plain whose history was forgotten before the invention of history.
I am the Norsemen who sailed beyond Iceland at the time of the Crusades. The men who returned home, not with Saracen plunder, but with stories of a land past the sea.
I am the Renaissance Navigators who came in search of Gold and Empire and who discovered a deeper more difficult wealth.
I am the Priests and peasants uprooted from the old world and replanted in the new as a pledge and a hope.
I am the strip farmers, the trappers, the traders, who pushed back the curtain on this green and untried continent.
I am the men who roamed and mapped and settled. The men who left their sons to the future. And the men who left only their graves.
I am the steady men who sowed and reaped, who built lasting foundations.
I am the impatient men who fought with guns and pens and politics for self determination.
I am the indomitable men who wouldn't be stopped as they hammered together a nation.
I have walked this land, ridden, driven, flown and paddled, across her millions and more millions of miles.
I have blasted her rocks, channeled her waterways, survived her snows.
I have run my hands over her face, searching out the strengths beauties and moods of my country, She is rich, wild, potent.
I came from all the world, and come yet.
I came for freedom, and brought freedom with me.
I came in hope, and brought fulfillment.
I came to exploit and stayed to develop.
I gave myself in barter, for what I sought in measure, as I have made CANADA what she is. She has formed me to her own needs. Her breadth and openness have infused me. Have given me a firmer
step and a further look.
I am not an average Canadian. There are no average Canadians, and this is my country’s glory. It is the surest measure of her freedom to be a nation of individuals. People who are Canadian by nature rather than by decree.
I am a Canadian, and am deeply myself. For this privilege I give thanks to my country. May she never falter. And may she never swagger. May she realize her potential without losing her character. May she have peace, and may she give it. May it always be a proud thing to say. I am a Canadian.

Hi - I'm Carly . . .

I originally came in here because you had JM Coetzee's 'Slow Man' up for January's discussion.

Haven't read any of it yet.

I'll look 'round and see what else you are discussing.

Greetings from sunny Spain,

Just joined this forum as well and am very excited about the whole thing. I found this site by looking for reading lists and was very happy to discover that there were so many people from so many backgrounds meeting here to talk about literature.

I've already joined the book club and am looking forward to reading new books as well as other people's comments and points of view.

As for my reading tastes I consider myself as an eclectic reader and am always keen to read new author, genre and style etc. I just wish I had more time...

Well, I look forward to "reading" all of you.

Hasta pronto :)

Hello Everyone!

This being my first post I thought I should introduce myself to fellow litrature lovers. Being probably one of the youngest members here I admit that I have not alot to say about myself as I've barely started my life. But here goes.

My name is Tammy; short not for Tamara nor Tamsin. It originates from the Hebrew language...meaning the dry fruit; 'dates'. I like to think of my self as sweet.

I am a high school student in my last year studying too many subjects for my own good. Going on soon to study English Lit, Drama and possibly Geography for my A levels pretty soon. People who know me would describe me as outgoing, fun-loving and bright. But those close to me would know that I have a subtle, secret side that some would call "crazy". I am in constant search of a deeper companionship that what I have with most people now.

I am mostly English, though I am not proud to be; having read some on the history of English conquers. I would consider myself as nothing more patriotic than a proud Londoner...loving the experience of such a multi-cultural and diverse society that I am constantly exposed to.

I come from a working class background, single parent family with 4 children. But have not always been so. I have had a hard childhood, which I would rather not go in to. Both my parents have had a youth of being politically active which is probably were I get my wide insight into the world; although they wouldn't be seen within 10 yards of eachother. People are sometimes scared of me, being so young and having so many bursting ideas that I sometimes have to refrain from blurting out; for fear of assasination. < Okay, maybe thats slightly extreme.

I have strong feelings about the coruption of the world, and reading novels is my mental and emotional escape from that reality. Each night I confide in a diary, which someday (long after I no longer exist) will hopefully be read by many and open eyes on unexplainable situations and experiences. Many that I have yet to write. I am a big lover of Shakespeare; having studied throughout my school years the following: Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, Twelth Night, A Midsummer Nights Dream and Othello. My favourate all time book would have to be "The Grapes of Wrath", by John Steinbeck. It was a real eye-opener and I would reccomend it to any individual that is able to be fundamentally and emotionally involved with a book. At the moment for my Enlglish Lit GCSE I'm studying "Of Mice and Men", also by Steinbeck. Another book that I have read twice over now just to get the impact is "1984", by George Owell. I must admit that it is one of the greatest books ever written and had me cracking smiles, raising eyebrows and even weeping tears; it was so distressing. Probably because I read it first when I was just 14 years old and then a year later I read it again, this time able to understand much more; the impact on me was shocking. I've taken an interest to George Orwell and have read the famous "Animal Farm" too. My Geography teacher recommended I read his book about materialistic consumption by men; "Keep The Aspidistra Flying". One of my ideas about the future revolves around the Orwellian type world, which I believe will be empowered by Facebook as Big Brother. Call me crazy if you must, we all have our opinions.

I love almost all types of music, and love to have it playing in the background when doing various activities...including writing. I am a proud lover of Reggae, Drum & Base (although not some of the silly new stuff), Jazz and The Blues catch my heart occasionally, Garage but mostly I am in love with Salsa music and any Middle Eastern music I can heavily relate to. I cannot play any instrument, but wished that I could play the accoustic guitar, it being one of my favourate instruments; I fall in love with anyone who can play it well and tend to listen to them intentley for hours on end.

In a few years time I'm looking to go on a mad one to loads of different countries around the world; unplanned. Thats if I can get the cash! We only live once and I want to make the most of life. If anyone has any reccomendations for countries they have been to that is naturally beautiful and were I can observe a real culture rather than a tourism culture I would be very greatful. I would also be very interested in any fictional books or poems recommened.

Sorry for the essay about myself, but I am a very deep, elaborated person; forgive me. Thanks for taking the time to read it. Peace.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Qimissung, and I've been posting here for about a month. I didn't know about this place until recently. I've mostly been hanging out playing the cinquain chain and the shared haiku games. These can be quite obsessive,I must admit!

I teach English. For the past four years I've taught Freshman English-which can be quite discouraging, and before that English as a Second Language. Next year it's going to be seniors. We shall see how that goes.

I love to read, of course. Lately, mostly mysteries. Old favorites include "The Once and Future King," "Jane Eyre," and "Les Miserables." I also like humor. Enduring favorites of these include Shirley Jackson's "Life Among the Savages" and "Raising Demons;" Sally Benson's "Meet Me in St. Louis," and "The Irish R.M." which is both hysterical and can put you to sleep in a minute. They do a lot of fox-hunting, and one bush looks very like another when your reading about it, after all.

I've enjoyed my month here, and I hope, I really hope, to enjoy many more in the months to come.

Adios, mi amigos.

Hello! I just found this forum, and it seems to be really interesting. A great possibility to discuss what I am reading and have read. I mean, people read different stuff, so with my friends I can't really discuss most of what I'm reading...

Short introduction: I am 22 years old, come from Norway and study Industrial Mathematics. I get the feeling that most of the people here are somehow studying languages or literature, so I guess I will be the guy asking the stupid questions ;)

Hello, I'm Leo or you may call me Leo.
I've often imagined a blueprint of a fascinating literature base, filled with those who shine kindness towards literature. Well, it seems that such a place does indeed exist.
I'm from Virginia, Lynchburg specifically, and it has a tendency to lean towards dullness, but is working for me at the moment.
I love reading, writing, and having conversations with others about literature.
I'm looking forward to meeting some decent people, and sharing some interests. So, feel free to message me.

Hi, I'm new to this site, and sort of new to the whole world of forums. But I thought this could be a cool place to maybe meet some people and also learn a few new things.
I am a moderate reader, who loves the Harry Potter books, and is quite fond of the 'His Dark Materials" books as well. I also have this weird attraction to Shakespeare. I never really liked it back in high school. But ever since I finished I've been trying to find ways to get Shakespeare in my life. So I guess that's the main reason why I'm here, to learn more about the great Bard and also learn how to read the plays on my own.
Anyways, I look forward to discussing with all of you at some point.
Buh-bye

I came across this site when conducting a search. What a pleasant surprise. My compliments.

I am actually on a mission. I recently came across some old books and I am interested in selling or giving them away. After a search on ebay, I realized that the books may not be worth much.

I am now looking at giving them away. Instead of bothering with ebay, and I may use a rather different approach, raffling them away for free on eraffle.com.

Yet, I want to be sure I am not iving away something valuable. I will check this site for guidance. I have a 1904 copy of The Bobbsey Twins. Is it worth selling. I think not.

Look forward to any guidance.

Hi... I am new, duh, and just had a technical question... I got here because I want a place to post and get feedback on my short stories. I found the short story board, but my stuff is longer than most of the posts there... about 5,000 words. Is there a place besides the forum where I should post something I've written? Or is it okay to just have a really long post? Thanks so much,

Caitlin

Hello all!

My name is Nadia but all my friends call me Aidan.
hmm let see, I'm a college student trying to get a degree so that I can take a couple years off and teach english in Japan. From there I would like to travel to neighboring countries, top of the list are Thailand, Tibet, China, Russia, India, and Indonesia. I will decided what to do after that when the time comes.
Now tho I like to occupy my time reading, painting, going to concerts, and hanging out with friends.

My favorite book might be The Count of Monte Cristo or Catcher in the Rye.
favorite movie is either Memento or Fight Club
and favorite bands are Neutral Milk Hotel, Wolf Parade, Interpol, and Joy Division.
I think that might just have to do it.
thank you for your time.

Hey, hey, hey!

I was looking for this section as I just finished subscribing. I don't know why, but it seemed kind of rude to just start posting without saying hi to you all.

I found out about this forum searching for an Al. Dumas forum. I really prefer getting informations from people that have actually read his books, than read articles (of course, it depends, but most articles I find on the internet have a really cold approach of his life and work).

I guess I should say something about myself now, right? Well, first I should tell you that English is not my native language, so please excuse my mistakes.

I have started reading quite recently. Of course, I read a lot of books when I was in school, but just typical adventure novels, a lot of Jules Verne, Agatha Cristie and russian writers. Now that I finally subscribed at the town's library I found myself surrounded by books and, being summer, I spend lots of nights reading (I rarely read during daytime). After reading The Count of Monte Cristo, I started searching other Dumas novels. Also SF became one of my favorite types of literature and I spent a lot of money on Asimov novels. But right now I'm looking to extend my preferences and read a larger range of books. So, I guess I'm in the right place, no?

I guess I'm going to see you around the forum so good-bye for now =)

Rokku~

Hi everyone! I've just found this site and thought it would be nice to participate. I am a 56 yr old man, married, 3 sons and live in Florida.

Actually, I am looking for someone who may recognize some books by the description that follows:

These books were juvenile adventure stories published, I would say around 1925. Mu father had 4 of them. The main characters were two homeless boys who, when travelling by train were involved in a train wreck. They were found by a man who was an inventor/adventurer. The boys, of course, ended up travelling with the inventor and his assistant, a black man who had an interesting way of speaking. On one occasion, on their trip to the north pole, he spoke of an eskimo woman as "misquitomexican woman".

The spelling of eskimo in this book was "eskimaux". (or something like that)

If anyone has any idea as to a title or author, I would appreciate the info.

Thanks

Hello everybody, It's nice that we are getting so many new forum members who share with us their precious views. There should be a place to introduce yourself and say hi; and this is it. :D

Come on and tell us about yourself. :D What are your hobbies? What are your favourite books? And also share with us everything else you would like to tell us about yourself.

Have a nice time browing the wonderful world of books and book-worms! :)

I am new to this website and although some of the discussion on literature is informed and informative, I do take exception to the infantile presentation of the subject matter.
Why the childish logos for example and the silly names contributors use as pseudonyms.
Even allowing for the fact that the website originated in the USA and most of the contributors are students, one would expect more consideration for the great writers who have given us the books we love to read.
After all, you're either serious about literature or not and, if not, why bother to use the website anyway ?
Literature can be fun without being childish, so let's grow up and show it some respect.

Anyway, I hope that I can learn a few things as well as pass a few things on, I have already come across a couple of must read books having just read a few threads. This thing could be dangerous!

Hello everyone, my name is Zach. I am 25 years old and I live in Northwest Florida . I have been married for three years to my amazing wife Savannah, and eight months ago (12/11/07) she gave birth to our first child, Ethan.

I love to read and am an aspiring author. I also enjoy playing and listening to music, watching good TV shows and movies, and playing video games.

I was homeschooled using a Christian Curriculum. Don't get me wrong, I very much prefered it to public schools and I believe I'm better and smarter for being homeschooled, but the literature we were given to read was Christian in theme and therefore very dull and awful to read. I'm now in the process now of catching up the classics that I feel I missed. Does anyone have a list of important books that I could pick up? Or possibly any recommendations of lesser known works? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I just found this site because I was trying to look up something from Orwell's 1984. I do indeed believe that a lot of what Orwell predicted is happening in America today (more about that on that thread) and was really just interested in learning how folks a generation or two or three ago dealt with issues like the ones we hear so much about from the "noose media" today.

I'm a college grad from way back in the 20th century and feel a bit like a dinosaur since all my Computer Engineering experience is so old in computer years. If a horse ages three years for one of ours and a dog seven years, I probably age about 10 years for each calendar year. Or at least what I learned seems to keep getting more and more obsolete. When Windows first came out, I can remember thinking no one would want an interface that insults their intelligence the way Windows' "Draw Me A Picture" interface does. Long live DOS! Well, it's... I mean it WAS... Oh, never mind...

I could tell you all about myself but it wouldn't be as interesting as some of the other posts, so I'll spare you the yawns. Nice to "meet" you all!

hi everybody, i just registered and wanted to say a few words of introduction. i'm german, currently living in berlin, working at uni (philosophy & cultural studies). i've been running a literature blog in german with my short fiction, some experimental web-related stuff and pieces of a novel in progress for a while, and lately i've been feeling like i'd love to try writing in english too. being no native speaker, this is still very much like trying to make yourself at home in a very dark room, but it's also interesting because it makes you think about words in a way you probably wouldn't if they belonged to your mother tongue. anyway, you can find the first results of my attempt to become a bilingual writer on my blog indenselbenfluss.twoday.net (the blog's name means "into the same river"). i'm looking forward to reading the other members' texts here, and i'd appreciate critical comments or any kind of feedback. alright, so...imagine i'm taking a bow now and awkwardly rubbing my palms while leaving the stage with the mic...

I think many persons know me by now. And in fact it is my posts that introduce me better, yet to introduce myself formally is a joy indeed.

I am from Nepal, a country you may know by the great Himalayan ranges, and Mt.Everest, best of all. The birthplace of the Buddha is another thing worth mentioning to identify myself with.

Legends are the makings of Nepal and we live more in legends than in realities. We have more gods than people and more dreams that moments of wakefulness.

Nepal is more of a country of poets, singers, mystics and less of scientists, merchants.

Notwithstanding all that said i am at heart not a Nepali. The fabrics I wear identify me with is Nepali. These are the externals to me. The real me is my writings I outfit myself with to be together with you across many oundaries.

I am Haribol Acharya. And how funnily named!!! Since all of you know my by 'Blaze of glory. A simple lad and all I know is skin deep, and learned from books and all of you through interaction with you.

I was from an agrarian community, a remote part of Nepal. First, if you visit Nepal you will find the country a remote and highly undeveloped place, and when you talk about a remote village of a remote country you can figure out the degree of remoteness.

But now I am in a place with all the amenities a modern city has.

I am a banker by business, and a writer by choice.

My domains of interest?

I am a funny man, simple, easy going, no complex. I can make friends from princes to paupers, and I can feel at home anywhere and with any. Speaking of my interest I am interested in so many things at the same time. I like to be a writer, learn new languages, visit many places, read many classics, read books legends and mythologies. I am interested in businesses. I love gardening, write poems, and play musical instruments, pray, meditate despite the fact that more often than not I present myself as an atheist.

One of my intimate friends, in fact I have many here, is Nikolai. I often cold on and harsh on in words, but not in reality. I believe in spirituality deeply and I am not my words at times. As a writer I fabricate ideas and it is not necessary that I am my words thou at time I am my words too.

My firm and unshaken belief is in you, not in name or a specific identity you wear, a nationality or a degree. No a person that is you beyond the seen.

Why does everyone think teaching is such a horrible career chioce? We all had them, and I'm sure I can't be the only one who appreciated them. The last woman I told I was going to college to teach responded with "It's a thankless job, with no glory in it." Is everyone obsessed with money? We can't all be pharmacists and doctors. This is not the reaction I had anticipated... Since, when did teaching become the wrong thing to do with your life?
