Haha, dankjewel! :) Are you Dutch/Belgian/otherwise Dutch-speaking yourself?
If I manage to bring class to anything that would be a first in my life.
Neen, ik spreek niet goed Nederlands--only enough to get myself in trouble. Ik ben Amerikaans. It's always interesting to see how close Dutch is to its English cousin, though. If you run into Kiki, she speaks Dutch (and German and French, I think). Welcome again to the site. :)

Hi everyone, A friend recommended I check this place out and so far, his advice has not failed me. I love reading and writing (that should be obvious) as well as lots of outdoorsy activities. I'm a graduate student in physics, which makes a lot of people question my sanity and dedication to writing. But the truth is, I chose physics to be a challenge for myself and didn't really expect to go this far with it. I'll get my degree in a few years and who knows what I'll do then. I like the research but it doesn't leave me a lot of writing time. I've always had grand ambitions, some of which I still plan to accomplish. Two of my ambitions, which I hope to realize before I graduate, are getting my motorcycle license and taking helicopter flight lessons.

Welcome Abnormalalien! :alien::alien::alien: it sounds like you have some interests that could give a valuable sense of authenticity to your fiction (if that is what you want to write). How many other writers know what happens in a physics lab, or helicopter cockpit, or on the back of a Harley? That's bound to be an advantage. In any case, welcome to the site. It's nice to have you here. :)

Hello there. My nick is Tweedledum and I have came across this site accidentally (and I looked for a book forum for quite some time.) I am now reading/writting and do some work here and there. I love to read (obvoius) fiction a lot (magic, fantasy, maybe some dystopian and SF if it is extremely good.) I have yet to built my list on goodreads (that, if I can actually remember all of the books I have read.) Now, I hope I am welcomed.

My real name is Mark and I am a graduate student working on a doctorate in Reading and Literacy. I really like to read all types of books of Classic to Stephen King, but I really like reading Children's literature. I like the historical series like Little House series, Lord of the Rings series, Narnia Chronicles, etc. I have also received a Masters in Education specializing in Children's literature and I am currently trying to find spaces to publish my work. I have also worked as a licensed practical nurse for 13 years where I also worked as an activities assistant working with the geriatric population and as a substitute assistant teacher in a Head Start classroom for a few years. One day I would like to teach a course dealing with Children's literature as a therapeutic mileau.

My favorite books are journey and quest and magical realism oriented: Mosquito Coast, The Jaguar Hunter, One Hundred Years of Solitude, and recently, a fascinating book called "Lamonga: River of the Seven Spirits" that was given to me as a gift.

Hi guys. I wrote enough earlier...not feeling the inspiration. blah blah blah heres one:
I have these ugly qualities. I bury them in the soil and give them sustenance to flourish. I have these beautiful qualities, and I hide them too, because I don't have faith in them. I question their essence because of the shroud that hangs over my neck: the mariner's albatross. Like night and day, I go about my life in a constant state of disharmony, not manic depressive, but with a bipolar and ambivalent idea of self that I only project onto others. It might be stable to accept the luke warm grayness in this black and white world, but I want to embrace the moments of light, and allow them to be magnified by the juxtaposition of darkness. Until that day comes I'll continue to be consumed by both, powerless because of a refusal to embrace nothing but one.
and...
This Chain
Man goes to work,
Puts his clothes on in fear.
He wanders through the day,
And comes home weary of tomorrow.
We sell ourselves so small,
Look into the eyes of a child—
They are infinite.
The world is theirs.
Shoot him down enough,
He becomes a man.
Man is fear
Fear is man
Meet the man without fear
You’ve not met a man.
Some are consumed by the small fears
These people are obviously afraid.
Others need a more trained eye.
They aren’t so easy.
Their fear is masked with success—
Money.
The hypocrisy of religion
Goodness with a side of denial and compartmentalization.
The Shadow always lurks.
Don’t lie!
You’re so afraid.
That’s you running from your fear.
Your protective mechanisms are the very thing you fight,
And I’ve seen sterner stuff.
Look at me,
Rationalizing, analyzing, objectifying,
In the end,
Simply intellectualizing,
The fire that consumes me—
Fear.
Created by man it burns the world over,
Perpetually.
It’s a permanent blemish on our hearts,
The hill won’t break the wheel,
No man is removed.
It has many shades, colors, sizes; is highly individualized and shrouded.
We are contained by cloaked boxes
Some bigger and clunkier than others
But NONE escape the sure weight.
Words to live by: “Just let go of the child inside
He will only be denied
Let in the prince and the plow
Be rid once and for all of the dangerous child” ,
But then be weary of the weeds that seep through the walls
Of the castle.
The king and his subjects master the fire:
The delusion of control.
It cannot be tamed.
The wolf and the lion are all around us
And you can’t let go of the child inside
He sees, hears, and knows.
He waits for our paradigms to atrophy.
We wait to be broken, to awaken to that before,
The interlude is madness, with clowns and balloons.
The bright sun finally breaks our shadow.
But it is too bright for us to see.
Beauty to Men’s minds is incalculable.
Truth to man is love to Bundy—
Blinding at best.
Like the ceiling effect of a drug.
For, Be ye as little children,
Then see the kingdom.
thanks tim

I've been writing novels and short stories for a few years now and am just starting to get into the process of publishing them.

Well, I¡¯m a man or boy¡ªcall me what you choose, sweet peruser¡ªsteeped in literature from childhood; I devour literature as I do the tastiest food imaginable in the world. It was my avarice for reading, I remember, that took me by the hand and brought me in contact with Jewish literature. Before I encountered sacred Jewish fragments, I had perused the Bible much often from Genesis to Revelation. Then my greed for reading, I admit it, broadened so as to include novels¡ªand how I love novels! Well, it was my affection for novels, in its turn, that brought me to this site; I am happy to remain.
I am a high school leaver on my way to a well celebrated university! Why, Oxford of course! I'm fighting in a strenuous duel ever there was and will be in the days of our progeny; I am forearmed beforehand. But against whom am I combating? Against Satan¡ªour common enemy! I know the students in Oxford are mere mortals, children of the most high whose prayers have been heeded. And I see no good reason why, being a man of deep faith and apt to vanish the ancient mountains, I should not get there. The force with me is formidably ¡®The Holy Spirit¡¯!
My hobbies? I seriously love reading and watching movies; and I like going for long walks on foot¡ªbut with a book under my arm.
My name is:
Abraham A. Sylvester.

Wow, what an impressive site! Well-established and still going strong, with a wide range of ages, interests and nationalities represented. I am very happy to have found you.
My name is Kell Willsen and I'm a writer - or rather, a story-teller. I love words, and enjoy the depth and richness of novels and poems, but I have found over the years that different stories suit different media. And so, in order to tell my stories, I am learning about comics, songwriting, stage plays, audio dramas, narrative poetry, oral story-telling, writing for the screen (large and small) and, starting in September this year, game design. And that's just for telling stories - when it comes to enjoying other people's work the possibilities are almost endless. Turns out that there are stories just about everywhere you go.
Ahem... OK, so you may have figured out by now that I like to go off the deep end when it comes to the theory and practice of narrative. Ideas are exciting and up for endless examination, but occasionally I need to shut up and get some work done. Speaking of which...
Bye!
I will most definitely be back.

I've written a couple of short stories that I can't finish. The most recent one, I got an idea from the book, "Beautiful Ruins" and wrote something that has recently happened to me.
I still keep aspiring to be a real writer but I can't find time for school. Online school is not good for me - hence the procrastinator!
I hope I get feedback from you all in a technical point of view. I want my stories to paint a picture, just like everybody else.

Fond memories of driving up HWY 1 in your neck of the woods quite often in the past from Silicon Valley to S. Cruz and north on the way to the City by the Bay. 280 was always faster but unless there were slides I usually took the scenic route. Never stopped, except maybe for gas, but always wanted to stop by the bowling center there.

Hello Janice,
I know a number of writers who start but don't finish their writes. Many people get stuck in the thinking but not doing phase, and that’s not good because your goals won’t magically get completed without you taking action. Believe in yourself and take action....I know easier to say than do; but it shouldn't be. Don't think...just write and go with the flow.

Hello from western Canada! I did my undergrad in sciences but I have always loved arts and literature. Here I am now, mid life and I am really pursuing my passion for poetry, literature, and philosophy. Taking a lot of MOOCs and participating in various online websites that are focused on my passions.
My line of work is a field where art and science meet- wine! I enjoy consuming it from time to time to...hehe.
I am participating in NaPoWriMo and have gotten up to poem 6.
That's all I can think to say about me at this time.

I was born as Talissia but more often go by Lisa and am a 25 year old Louisiana resident (don't tell anyone but I just recently started to love where I've grown up) and have been attempting to spend my off time reading and writing. I've always been a hard time choosing the books Ive read but as I've aged have developed the need for MORE.
Speaking of which, I'm happy to join you here on this forum as a part of my 2013 new years resolutions. :)

Hey everyone. It was recommended to me that I read "How to Read a Book."
In doing so I am developing an intense desire to begin a journey through a western, and hopefully eastern, canon chronologically. I know that's an incredibly huge endeavor and I"m in no rush.
So, I thought it would be right for me to start here.
Thoughts, advice, and considerations greatly appreciated.

Welcome bsquare! I'm a great fan of reading without a rush, as well as Eastern and Western literature. It is a great adventure, and I wish you all the best on it. Reading chronologically is going to take a very long time, though, since there is so much. It can take years sometimes just to read just a handful of some of the older stuff. You might do better to focus on the novel, and work forward from there. Another approach would be to "time travel" by starting with a book from the 21st century, then reading one from the 20th, 19th, 18th, etc. In theory you could get all the way back to Gilgamesh that way. It would be quite a journey. Or you could just read various classics here and there like some of us do. Good luck whichever road you take, and again, welcome to the site. :)

Hi everyone. I am new to the site. I am very interested in literature, specifically those in the western canon. I enjoy reading (and rereading) shakespeare and chaucer, as well as the ancient greek tragedies. Furthermore, I enjoy reading texts on maths and physics (I am currently reading Newton's mathematical principles of natural philosophy and Huygen's treatise on light). I am currently thinking of reading either Goethe's Faust or Don Quixote. I am in middle school but after this summer will go to highschool. Hope to use this site to get insight on any random question on literature I have!

Welcome Xev. Hope it's participation, but enjoy yourself in any case. :)
Hi all, I've had a lifelong hatred for literature and reading in general, mainly because I was too impatient to absorb the material and/or had too short an attention span to appreciate it. Well, after suffering through countless literature/writing courses in my education, I've decided to give it a second try. A little background: classical music (the study and performance of) was the foremost passion of my life, but I've chosen to give it up because of personal reasons and time constraints. So this will be my opportunity to move on to another type of art, an art that is totally strange and frightening to me. Perhaps there were things about literature that I've overlooked, and will now come back to enlighten me.
I am currently reading Dostoevsky's The Idiot and Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon. Why these two books? On a whim, and by chance, these were the first two books I saw while dusting off a few boxes in the garage one day.
Pleasure to be here.
Clopin

Well if you hate reading I definitely would not start with The Idiot.

Perhaps there were things about literature that I've overlooked, and will now come back to enlighten me.
Yeah no kidding. Clopin's right, The Idiot is not a great starting place. The Great Gatsby or Sense and Sensibility or Chekhov's short stories or Alice Munro or lots of others would be better.
The Idiot is not a great starting place.
Why? So far it hasn't been boring me, and I'm about a third of the way in.

04-15-2015, 08:23 AM
Hi Rei! Welcome to the site. Perhaps what you were really hating all those years was having literature like The Idiot crammed down your throat because it was "something that you should read" rather than an emotionally rich (not to say excruciating) experience, and a book one might want to read. It's important to read what you love, and if you are enjoying Dostoyevsky, I recommend that you stick with him. The Brothers Karamazov is even better--his masterpiece, really.
By the way, your name means "of the thing " or "to the thing" in Latin, and could potentially be translated as "to the point." Did you do that on purpose? Or maybe it has something to do with classical music?
In any case, welcome to the site. :)
Lykren
04-15-2015, 10:09 AM
Well, if you like it then keep going! It's just a rather dense, painful text for many readers. But like Pompey said, keep reading Dostoevsky if he speaks to you. Crime and Punishment is a blast.
Rei means zero in Japanese and is the name of a character from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. Is that where your name is from? Who's right, Pompey, me, or neither? :)
Clopin
04-15-2015, 05:29 PM
Why? So far it hasn't been boring me, and I'm about a third of the way in.
Well then you should be fine. A lot of people find The Idiot in particular to be quite boring, I don't but it wouldn't be my first choice with Dosto either.
Crime and Punishment, Catch 22, The Great Gatsby, Jane Eyre, Gogol in general, Kurt Vonnegut in general, Fathers and Sons, Notes from Underground, Ivanov, The Catcher in the Rye, A Hero of Our Time and Watership Down are all books I would recommend someone who hasn't read much.

The Idiot is a primarily existentialist, but beautiful, text examining how Christ would fare in the modern world. So, the narrative isn't as linear or dramatic as Crime and Punishment, none of his other novels are, however it has its own fascinating metaphysical narrative about the spiritual connections and disparities between Myshkin and Roghozin and both of their desires Nastassya. I always recommend it and The Devils/Possessed if they want to read the best Modernist (non-linear) existentialist novels of F.D. Most of them have loved The Idiot, the Devils, not so much.
P.s. Kurosawa's film of The Idiot is brilliant.

Unless you've already seen his works, you have to see John Ford as well. He one of the greatest American directors of all time, if not the greatest, and has been a huge influence on hundreds of directors, including Kurosawa, Lucas, and Scorsese. His best films are: The Searchers, Stagecoach, My Darling Clementine, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, but he has many other greats.

A little about myself: I like marital Arts, Chinese Movies, and Chinese Cooking. I consider myself a Star Wars, Star Trek Geek. I've wanted to write a novel for the longest time. There was always something missing in most movies. That is what novels provide. Thoughts an feeling of the main characters. The goal is to make a TV show or movie out of my novel. I don't know if this is where I am expected to introduce myself and say Hi, but Hi. I came here to learn about choosing a translation of Dante's Comedia Divina as I am about to read it. I have been touched by the serendipity of this place as the first blog I chose, randomly, to read referred to that work.
I do like to express myself with words
I respect "The Word". I do not want to try to describe myself but rather wish to let my words teach you what is important (if there is anything important) about me. I leave you tonight with a quote "desperation often masquerades as faith"

I actually don't much like poetry, but Japanese and German poetry in the original languages is great. I don't know what it is about English, but most of our poetry is not that good (IMHO). As for fiction, Paul Auster, Hermann Hesse, and most hard science fiction (not <shudder> fantasy, except for JRR Tolkien, who was a god)....

Good afternoon, friends, new guy here, completed my profile, feel free to have a look. General question to anyone who cares to respond regarding Emerson and I hope it is not considered 'sacrilegious' (!).....Emerson's writings are in such 'olde English' and I find myself spending a lot more time than would otherwise be necessary in understanding him and his work. Is there extant a 'translation' of his works into 'modern English', such as, for example, the New International Version (NIV) version of the Bible vs. the King James version? Thanks in advance for your kind courtesy in considering this and responding!
Pompey Bum
06-05-2015, 05:31 PM
Welcome Tuck. Please enjoy the site. :)
I'm sure there must be such an abomination, and perhaps some evil spirit here can guide you to it. I urge you, though, to take the time to listen to Emerson's own voice. The NIV and the KJV are both translations; but what you are asking for--however convenient you may find it--is (in my opinion) a dumb down. Courage! You are better than that, I am sure! :)

Hey guys!
So - nice to meet you all!
I'm 23, originally from Brazil - so English is not my first language, sorry in advance for any mistakes -, but I'll be staying a few months in UK. Since the time difference between here and basically all my family and friends is 4 hours, I was hoping to meet some new friends here, so I could not only train my written English, but also chat about books! And this is something I love :D
Some (not so) useful info about me: What I REALLY enjoy about reading is not only the story itself, but also how it's told. I really love to taste the words, to feel and input (when I'm writing) texture and scents. For books, as with music, I prefer dark, dense tones with ugly, sticky, smelly scenes. I love writing and experimenting with words. And with lines, while I'm drawing. And with food, while I'm cooking!
Not sure how to end this, so I'll send a Brazilian hug to everyone ;)

Maybe, but isn't this more like making the step up to a flexible flyer bicycle before moving on to the 10 speed? Emerson wrote in the 19th century. Use a crutch with him and you'll need one for Dickens, Austin, Thackary, Melville, Twain, Poe, and many others; Fielding, Defoe, and Swift are even harder; and then there are Skakespeare and Chaucer. I believe you are retired (me, too! :)) Do you really want to restrict yourself so much at this time of new and expansive freedom? So much of reading really is about hearing that distant voice right there in your noggin.
Good luck with it, whatever you decide. I hope you will stick around and talk with us about it either way. :)

I created a thread introducing myself very briefly, however the very first few posts went in depth, therefore I think I will as well.
I am currently taking a break from the university life after having spent four years in it as a French major, switching to an Art History major, switching to a double-major in Art History and English-American Literature. When I return, I will strictly be studying American Literature.
I have a great passion for Edgar Allan Poe. I can't quite say what draws me to him without sounding sappy and cliché, but I can say that I began reading his works in 3rd grade. I thought his name sounded cool, so I did a report on him, and it was love ever since! I also greatly admire Jane Austen, whom I am DISTANTLY related to, and Thomas Lovell Beddoes. Beddoes' dark poetry is enchanting. I also have an immense adoration for pirates. If the museum of my dreams does not work out, I think I would like to work at a Maritime museum, as museum work was my concentration in Art History.
I have interned at a wonderful museum (you may privately ask if you wish to know further, I just hate publicly displaying in case it comes off as "bragging") and worked in a Special Collections department for a year. There, I found an even deeper love for literature and discovered so many books there, many of which I now own.
I love purchasing rare books and also have an ever growing collection of 19th century photographs. I have multiple tintypes, ambrotypes, CDVs, cabinet cards, yet no daguerreotypes yet. I also LOVE Post Mortem photography, however I have yet to purchase one.
So there's a bit about me. I am passionate about polar bears and wanted to be a zoologist as a child. Then I discovered that I succeed more in the art of creativity rather than science, not to mention that English and Art can be expanded outside of the lines and rules applied to it.
I hope this hasn't been too long-winded and has been a better introduction than before. I look greatly forward to getting to know many of you, as I have enjoyed the people I have met so far!
Did I mention I am a very wordy writer? You've been warned.

Welcome again, if I missed you the first time, Kelly. I saw an exhibit of post mortem photography at the Fogg Museum at Harvard, ah, many moons ago now. I found the photographs historically interesting: severed heads from the Taiping Rebellion, a monastery chapel made from the bones of former monks, the hamburger helper that was left of Mussolini and his moll after Salo fell, and so on. But it it didn't have a gothic "Poe-ish" feeling to me. It was more like hundreds of stories to speculate about, having only seen the last act: sometimes sad, sometimes upsetting, sometimes quite moving.

That is very interesting! I am not familiar with Post Mortem photos outside of deceased figures (animals or people), unless those other items were from a different exhibit within the Post-Mortem exhibit! Fascinating, nevertheless, and that sounds like a fortunate occasion to have attended to.

Heh heh. Monastery chapel, right? Not monetary chapel. :)
There's also a headhunting museum in Taiwan that has some pretty unnerving photographs. It raises the question of what whether to preserve a historical legacy that most people would find upsetting, or to ignore it, or maybe to just sanitize it.

Have you read Krzhizhanovsky's works, Parfington? He was born in the 1880s, was a revolutionary writer of his time (i think) with bizarre, almost dark writing. I own a book of his, although there aren't many out so far because I believe he was banned for a long while and his works are finally being released to the public...I digress, I own a book of his called Autobiography of a Corpse. I think he's worth checking out.

I am somewhat familiar with the game with the same title of one of his novels, but as a writer, no. when it comes to more modern russian literature, I'm not quite interested, however, Russian literature simply feels steeped in deep meditation and the seeming dullness of their climate for most parts of the year affords to them the room to be clear and creative in ways that are lost to the modern world, with sensory overload at every turn. I just enjoy it, I suppose. it's hard to justify it in particular, perhaps I was a Russian in a past life. If I believed in any of that :P

I really enjoyed Dostoyevsky, especially "Crime and Punishment" and "The House of the death". Contemporary literature is something completely different. I have been looking for somnething new to read. "Futu.re" is worth reading. It`s a s-fi, set in distant future but referring to the present political world. By the way, I studied with many Russians and I taught them Polish.

Where to start - I am a friend of KathyCF I have known her for many years. I spend some of my time as a moderator with Kathy on a web site for a specific computer game. I like books that are either fantasy or science fiction. I worked in a book store that is now out of business (not because of me) and managed the Science Fiction, Fantasy and Mystery sections of the store. Currently I take care of two eldery relatives, I call it herding cats. Because they tend to never follow directions, scratch and bite just like cats you do not know do. When I have time I read or ride my bicycle. Like Samercury above I play the violin and love anime. The only Television I watch is Public Broadcasting for the English Mystery Shows and things like Doctor Who and Monty Python.

Cool... Asimov is one of my all time favorites.
Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age: Or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer is an excellent book, actually it's one of the best SF books I've ever read. Strictly speaking The Diamond Age is Science Fiction, but reads almost like a fantasy, sort of a cyberpunk/steampunk/urban fantasy tale. The protagonist is Nell, a young girl who finds herself caught up in events that are spiraling out of control; and an outlawed book created by her father is her only hope.

Not to worry; you were told wrong. It's primarily a discussion site, but you can also post your poems, stories, artwork, and photos.
Since your intro post was successful, you now know how it works. :) Browse the threads, and post where and when you feel like contributing. The people here are both quality and accessible, so don't be intimidated.

Welcome indeed, 9Jan. If you want to post a poem, go to the "forum" page (there's a button to get you there at the upper left of the screen). That will list all the forums the site offers, grouped by category headings. Follow the list down to the category heading "writing," under which you will find the link to a forum called "personal poetry." Click on that link and you will be in the forum. You can start a thread and post your poetry there by clicking on the "post a new thread" link at the upper left of that screen. It sounds complicated, but it's really just a few quick clicks.
You should be aware, though, that some fledgling poets post here because they want merciless criticism in order to improve their work (better we do it for them than the New Yorker). If you don't want that, BE SURE TO SAY SO AT THE TOP OF THE THREAD.
I hope that's helpful. I look forward to seeing your work. :)

Hello - How nice to find you. I'm reading Little Dorrit and wanted to see if anyone was discussing it. My google search "discussion little dorrit" brought me here. I love nonfiction and a variety of classical literature. Was just thinking that Dickens was the first cast member in the Monty Python set, and others, dontcha think? Am having a blast reading Little Dorrit, and thinking there's enough comment in it to qualify as nonfiction in a certain way - like any truly effective satire.

I read 19th century British and American novels and stories for pleasure ?! The very first book I remember reading as a child was `Treasure Island`, so it must have been this that sparked my love for the classic novels. However, it was only in my early twenties that I really began reading with a passion, (I am now 47). My favourite author is Thomas Hardy.

Hello all.
I am a history student from the UK, and to put it simply I love literature. My other interests include astronomy, jazz, metaphysics and learning Spanish.
My favourite writer is Scott Fitzgerald. My favourite books are The Great Gatsby, Lolita, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Secret History, Of Mice and Men and The Virgin Suicides. I am also fond of reading poetry; my favourite poets are Emily Brontë and Ezra Pound. My favourite poem is Ginsberg's Howl. I also read many short stories although I have to say I seldom venture outside of Fitzgerald's vast arsenal.
I have greatly enjoyed the insights found here thus far and I look forward to getting to know others and contributing myself where I am able to :)

My reading is fairly eclectic but I do have a particular interest in the verse novel form - haven't found any relevant discussions on here yet?
I will probably do a lot of reading of other posts over the next several days/weeks, before venturing to make contributions.
I am excited by what I have read so far I am very much looking forward to becoming an active learner and participant in the future.
