Hi, my name is Miss Meadowsweet (well, not really, but that's the username I chose). I am from the very northern part of Wisconsin where it is winter for nine months out of the year. There are many cons about living here, but one pro is that the long winters give me a lot of time to think about stories that need to be told, and then to write them, which is what I truly love doing.

I have written three novels. The first two were really just warm-ups, I suppose one could say, but the third I just recently finished, and I believe it may be truly worth getting published, which is what I'm working on at the moment. So basically, I love, love, love writing! And of course, to love writing, I had to first love reading.

I like to read a diverse range of books. I love a lot of the classics and want to read more of them, but I also love a lot of other genres. I get inspired by many things I read and do and see in life and this makes me want to write more. I especially love the outdoors and natural things, and I love digging my hands into the earth.

Right now I am a newspaper reporter for my small local newspaper. I like it, but what I really want to do is become a writer, not just a reporter of the facts. This fall I am hopefully going to be in Virginia going to school for my masters degree in English.

I am so glad to have found this forum and look forward to interacting with y'all!

Hey, Gwynhwyfar, just a quick question: I was wondering if your user-name comes from a book called "The Perilous Gard". There is a fairy-girl in that book named Gwynhfara (not exactly sure of the spelling). I was just wondering because it's one of my favorite books.

Hello all
I have just came across and registered to this forum. I assume I am older than most in here.
I am Greek and live in Piraeus, Greece - something I have tried to change, but with no results so far. In life, I consider myself to be a late bloomer. Professionally, I was a wanderer, not knowing what I wanted to do. A fact that led me to gain experience in a variety of fields. Later, this proved to be a valuable asset in life and professional experience. In mature age I studied Psychology and specialized/ an MSc in Applied Forensic Psychology. Today I work as a drug counsellor/therapist with drug addicted offenders as well as prisoners.
During the last years I developed a wider interest in p[hilosophical issues and a special interest in astrology.

Good evening. (From my side of the world.)

Call me Kate.

I'm new here so I'll make a brief introduction. I'm 19, taking up English. I'm a literature lover especially of classics. I also fancy books of suspense, mystery and the likes. I would love to have an intellectual exchange from everyone in this site. I really welcome diversity in ideas. Also, I'm into literary criticisms and theories so if anyone wants to share thoughts about the matter, I'd gladly appreciate it.

Enjoy reading!

AHOY! It is I, the anti-ego! The timid bearer of wisdom peering in from beyond the socio-gate!
Foreign to any sort of realm such as online forums, I was hoping to meet some like-minded people for the sake of my faith in humanity! I mostly indulge in modernist works for I don't feel the human race has progressed; mentally, ethically, morally, at all.

All I can say for myself is that nothing pleases me more than roaming the country roads of upstate NY in an auto or in my shoes. I fish, I read quite a lot (from Homer to Delillo I say!)

I am a student and certainly will never cease to be so. I am finding it more and more difficult to break the barriers that exist between myself and those who need help in this country. Not in an economic sense, but in an enlightened sense. I believe we are on the brink of cultural revolution, up to the young minds of this technological age to reinstate the importance of the power and potential education holds to the development of the ingenious American citizen.
I hope some folks on here feel the same way.

Remember, we're responsible! Don't feed the beast!

Hi everybody. Thankyou for welcoming me. I'm a 34 year old woman from the UK and love reading. My favourite novels are The Collector by John Fowles, The Patchwork Planet by Anne Tyler, Winnesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson and various crime novels by english authors Mark Billingham and Peter James.
Here's my query that I really hope someone can help me solve. I read a book 5 years ago and cannot remember the title or any character names and vague parts of the plot but enjoyed it and hope to relocate it. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
It was set in London and written in the 60s or 70s. A single man in his 50s or 60s is renting an upstairs lodgings from an old lady. He is strange but non threatening but then a young woman rents one of the downstairs rooms. I think she may be a student. The older man uses every excuse to lure her upstairs, playing records, giving her food but she begins to be unnerved by him. He goes into her room when she is out and becomes enraged when he finds out she has a boyfriend as he thought she was a 'nice girl' I thinkl he kills her in the end. Any ideas???
Thankyou. Charlotte.

Hello everyone!

My name is Cathy and I am from California. I am a single woman in my late 40’s who has recently discovered the joy of writing, thanks to a friend who has encouraged and mentored me for the last several months.

This same friend recommended this site, and I must say, I am quite excited after seeing the feast of writing that is here! There is such variety and a wealth of technical knowledge and discussions and constructive criticism. These are the very things I am seeking in order to accomplish my goal of improving my writing skills.

I am a novice writer of mainly poetry, and have recently decided to venture into short stories as well. Beyond that, I set no limits so I am open to exploring many forms of writing.

I have no formal training, and only my deep desire to connect with other people, through the observation and expression of my thoughts, emotions, and life experiences as depicted by words, to try to capture that human element we all resonate with.

I chose poetry as my first exploration because it is an art form so rich, succinct and acute, in its expression of those human experiences that tie us together - the efficiency of words so exacting right down to the very syllable. On the surface they may seem inadequate when singled out, but when carefully crafted together, as with the artist’s brush, each stroke - each word - can penetrate the armor of the soul. It is those moments of shared human intimacy and vulnerability of the human spirit that I find so nourishing for my own soul.

I look forward to making new friends here, to learn how to improve my skills, and to learn about different forms of writing. I am glad to be here and am eager to get started!

I came on this site looking for something written about Twemlow in Our Mutual Friend

Looking forward to browsing the forums.

I'm a struggling writer who is enjoying the challenge of getting my work out to a wider audience.

Currently have just published on Kindle and am seeing where that takes me.

That's the plan, anyway.

Needed an alternative to the dreaded Facebook since I deleted it. Can't stand all the meaningless of that site and needed a place where I could talk about my actual interests and not be bombarded with boring status updates constantly. Hopefully make new friends too=)

I am presently reading for the 2nd time A Handmaiden's Tale by M. Atwood. I love several other books by her as well. My favorite author is Brian Evenson, but a lot of people don't seem to know who he is. I also adore Flannery O'Connor!

Anyway, have a good weekend!

I taught high school English and drama for many years, 3rd grade for two, and served as an adjunct English professor for two years, as well.

I've also written lots for newspapers, mostly freelance, but for awhile, full-time.

I love literature.

I hate crappy writing.

I am a good editor and article writer, but a poor creative writer.

I love Flannery O'Connor, Leif Enger, William Shakespeare, John Steinbeck, to name a few.

That aside, I would love to get some good reccomendations from people here. I really enjoy science fiction but would never snub a good book so if anyone has a few favorites I'd definately check them out.

Its almost 0100 hours in a remote corner of Assam (in India) from where I am writing this. Came across the site when I was searching for Literature Forums to interact and share views with people who love the written word.

I am an engineer by profession (there are still very few degrees in india which can actually land you a job). But my heart has always beaten for the magic that springs up from words woven so craftfully. I started writing poems ever since I was 6 years old. The themes and the content kept varying as I grew older, also being greatly influenced by some frozen-in-time experiences of my life. Recently, I also started dabbling in short stories-but I understand its a pretty long way for me to travel in this path.

Hope to meet and make new friends here!

I am new to creative writing, but I was a scientific writer/programmer. I liked writing code because it was very functional. Now I like creative writing because I think of it as a function to develop emotion, inspire thought and evoke questions from readers.

I try to follow the standard writing devices I remember from school. I plan on providing lots of sample work or just stories from newspapers or currents I think would be better with exposition or more detail.

Pluss, hearing other people talk about books they really like is inspiring...

On my bedside table right now I have the Pullman-trilogy His Dark Matter, but I'm wanting to re-read The Canterbury Tales afterwards - I once read them on a vacacion years ago.

Hello.I,m from the Netherlands so excuse for the errors in English not beeing a native speaker.

I,m a retired Academy Professor ( History and also Communication ).
I,m following courses ( no lecture duty anymore :) ) in Art History and researching myself.

My life long interest is culture in its widest sence.

I was always interested in the link between Litterature Art and Music.
A kind of totalerlebniss ( free after Wagner )
For instance Arthurian material or other courtly romances the text and the translation in art and music.( ..... , Tennyson, 19 century paintings of the lady of shalott till the song by Laureena Mc.Kennith album: the Visit )

Or the Chanson the Roland ....Orlando Furioso .... till even today in Sicilian folkart

Or the translation of Greek Mythology in Renaissance and Baroque Art( Ovidius and other sources were important as around 1500 printable translations appeared not anymore the Ovide Moralise but the litteral :) translations )
Of course there was the work of Dante Christine the Pisan Chaucer and many others Ovidius was not unknown in the Middle ages .

So in searching for Art i discovered this site with a special section for Art .
So i hope it will be a fruigal contact with this Forum.

Greetings.

I'm AJ. I'm a great lover of books, particularly of the fantasy genre, although I seldom have as much time to read as I would like. I'm also an aspiring author (of fantasy, surprise! surprise!) and my first book is nearing the final stages of editing to be published this summer. That's the plan, anyway.

Even though I'm a slow reader and haven't much time, I do enjoying discussing books which is a rarity where I live. Seems my husband and I are the only two people who read around here. So it's to find a place such as this. I look forward to many interesting conversations :)

05-21-2011, 07:37 PM
Hey guys. Virgo's my pseudonym, but it's all you guys need to know, so I'm Virgo. I'm a sixteen year old lit nerd that loves rock n' roll. I'm actually really new to the classic lit scene, which is really why I joined the site, so any "mentoring" (NOT patronizing, big difference.) is greatly appreciated.
I love to read and write, obviously, mostly mystery and fantasy. Dragons, faeries, magic(k), elves, dwarves, ancient languages, murder, vampires (real ones, not the sparkly kind), you name it. If it's weird, strange or just different, I probably want to read about it.
However, words are only half of life. The other half is music. I'll listen to anything that's actually music, and my list of favorites is insanely long, but if you're bored and really want to know, message me.
I also noticed a spot for submitted stories/poems, though I didn't look at it in much detail, so maybe you'll see some of my stuff up there, maybe not, but keep and eye or two out.

Hello!

I just joined up after going through a few different sites to weigh my options. I chose this forum for a number of reasons, but mainly because it seemed the least hostile.

I am currently deployed in Afghanistan (as a Marine) and I have plenty of time and little to do. When I'm not busy I am usually reading, so I thought getting involved in something like this might be a good way to stay involved in my reading, rather than reading book after book without ever contemplating, and thus ever understanding them.

My favorite author? Couldn't answer that question. You read different authors for different reasons. However, the authors I most often turn back to for pleasure alone would be Oscar Wilde, Nikos Kazantzakis, and Mark Twain.

That is about all I have to offer. I understand that when most people read a book it becomes a mirror, therefore, we rarely see the same thing. However, discussion is rarely counter-productive so I look forward to learning from (and with) all of you.

Hi everyone :) After my two neighbours right upon me, I guess it's my turn to introduce myself.
First of all, I apologize for my English ; being French, English is not my first language, and if there is any mistake left, please forgive me. I do my best, though !

I am 17 years old, I'll turn 18 in December. As I said, I'm French, I was born in South France, grew up in North, live in Paris since I'm 11. I love reading since I'm able to, and got literature-oriented even in my scholarship. This is my last year in Highschool, I study in a Literary "branch" (this is the French system : you mainly have to choose between Sciences, Economics and Literature for your two last years in Highschool), therefore I have a lot of Literature and Philosophy each week ! Starting September, I will study English & Film Studies in King's College London -hopefully !

I can't say who my favourite author is, they are so many ! But I would say that William Shakespeare is my favourite author, for I love him both for his plays, poetry and character, for as I discovered his work, I discovered a whole world -the Elizabethan Era- with which I completely fell in love. I also loveChristopher Marlowe, Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, Charles Lamb, Margaret Mitchell, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Alan Benett, Jane Austen, Scott F. Fitzgerald, and many others.

I love Literature and want to share it with plenty of people ; but the reason why I joined this perticular forum is the language. I can talk in French whenever I want, but I really have an affinity with the English language and authors who write/wrote in English, that I want to talk about Literature in English, or at least try to. It'd be a great experience, especially before going to London for a Literature degree !

I'm really looking forward to talking and exchanging with everyone here, for there are so many things that I would like to learn, read and say ! Thank you in advance !

Hello,
First of all, I am brazilian and my name is Marcelo Niederauer. I love to read since I was a child. So, this forum will be perfect to discuss my interests in Literature.
I can say I am a beginner, because there are a lot of books that I want to read, but I am just 16 years old...
I think some of my favorite authors are Oscar Wilde, William Shakespeare and Victor Hugo.
There are many Brazilian and Portuguese writers who are very good, though.
I enjoy poetry too.
Well, please forgive my mistakes for Portuguese is my mother language, but I swear I will try hard to write correctly.
I can speak Portuguese, English and Spanish, so you can write to me in any of these languages.
I am learning German at school and French at home. I wish I could write with you in these languages too.
I can not forget to say that I love classical music. I know that it isn't the topic of the forum... Just sharing, in case some of you enjoy it too, we could talk about some biographic books of composers, for example.:nopity:

Bye for now. See you!

Hello all.

There is not much to be said about me. I am composed of nothing but facts, really. I'm 18, turning 19 this October. I live on Long Island, and generally sequestered in my room reading. I occasionally work with my father installing auto glass and 'normal' glass though. I read on the way to jobs.

I'm currently on a science-fiction and Albert Camus kick. In all honesty, I can't say how this happened, but I'd easily say that science-fiction is my favorite genre and Camus my favorite author (Wells has to be equal to Camus though.) this undoubtedly will change, but is the current case.

That's it. Not much to look at. The quote, for those interested, can only be attributed to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Note: I misused Carroll's quote. I am the farthest thing from a "great puzzle."

Hi all, I just joined today and came across this forum by accident actually! I was looking for some inspiring poetry for a postmodern essay and came across this forum. I like to write poetry when I feel inspired and thought it might be interesting to get a bit more well read and talk to others who like literature etc.

So anyway, hi everyone I guess!

My favourite book is nonexistent, but I have a few favourites that changed my perspective on life; Catch 22, The Fountainhead, Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Road. Off the top of my head.

I'm currently training to be a psychotherapist so my focus is somewhat split, but I want to kind of keep in touch with the side of me that really enjoys literature.

Hello everyone!
I am happy to join this community, because i am fond of literature. I like different genres, but I need to say that more often I read Science Fiction and Fantasy books. It seems to me that I know this genre well although I am just 24-years old man. And I want to know more.
My favorite authors are Jorge Luis Borges, Hermann Hesse, Stanislaw Lem, Strugatsky brothers, Roger Zelazny (it is obvious, isn't it? Just look at my nickname), Clifford Simak, Ray Bradbury, Gene Wolfe, Erich Maria Remarque and James Herriot.
I am russian and live in Moscow all my life. So I want to apologize for my English. It is very possible that I already done some mistakes. I try to do my best, and my English is improving.
Currently I am working as a cpp programmer and I like my job, but this is not the point.
I want to say why I have decided to join this community in the first place. I like reading, discussing and reviewing the books, but this is not all. When you are reading a book in original, like me, you want discuss it using the same language, not your native one. So I have joined to you.

Yikes... I don't really know how to describe myself because I'm at the point of my life where I really don't have a definite answer to "who I am." I feel like last week I was hell bent on being Ian the Musician, and now I'm giving Ian the writer a whirl.

So ultimately, I hoping through this website and through writing that I will be able to say who I am and where I'm going. But at this point, I'll just have to go with "Hello, I am Ian." Thank you for the opportunity to do so and I look forward to finding new and interesting people!

Hello, My name is Meriem, I am Algerian. I'm studying for the MA degree in Crosscultural studies. I love your forums I have been using the data on these forums since I was an undergraduate student. Now I'm searching for a topic for my thesis, I'm thinking about Algerian literature, Maybe the theme of violence in Algerian literature. But I'm also fascinated by postmodernism as a philosophy and theory!
My user name, Tellem Chaho, is the title of a book containing four short stories written by an Algerian author, Mouloud Maammeri, from the Amazigh area, he wrote about this area and its traditions during the colonial period. The four stories are folk tales told by grand mothers in the Amazigh area (north west Algeria). Tellem Chaho simply means ''Once Upon a Time"
I'm looking forward to contribute into this forum and learn from it :)

Best Regards,

Mimi

Hello all,

I'm Hugh in England.

Too tired to be coherent so here's something haphazard..

Grew up loving Arthur Ransome and CS Lewis. Had a Biggles phase, read lots of science fiction. Don't read SF now, but would always be willing to read Ray Bradbury.

I enjoy studying languages, partly so I can read things I loved in translation, in the original. So I learned Spanish to read Borges, French to read Maigret and italian to read Guareschi (Don Camillo stories) and later 'discovered' the genius of Dante. I have never studied these languages to a high (university) level, but reading was always my strongest discipline.

In English I have fits and starts of reading Dickens, Austen, Hardy, often after watching a tv adaptation. I read detective stories: cadfael, Adam Dalgliesh, Wycliffe. I have an ambition (possibly misguided) to write for children so I read children's novels and poems - Pulman, Rowling etc.

I enjoy telling stories, usually from traditional sources, so I read collections of folktales, fairy stories etc.

That feels like a lot but on the contrary I don't feel I have enough time to read.

Hugh

Hello everyone,

I came across this site while searching for a book club. I am thrilled to find an online community that discusses such a wide variety of literature.

I am from Buffalo, NY but now live near Miami, FL. I am a big fan of Shakespeare, Dickens and Conrad. I have been on a personal journey through the "classics" since high school with stops along the way for historical fiction, history, art history, biographies, psychology and some modern fiction.

I look forward to joining the discussion.

In addition to that let me add a few things. As for me, I like music (and singing), reading (although I haven't been able to a lot lately), writing, and history. Particularly, I like musicals at the moment, and writing poetry. Most of the year, I play soccer, even though for a quarter of the year, it's snowing (or just really cold). I live on the East Coast, though it doesn't snow a whole lot here. We pretty much survive the winter on minimal snow days, if any at all, though last year we had about two and a half or three feet of snow fall. My favorite books range about as far as my music genres, which is about anything, as long as it's good. Right now, though, I'm in a "Good Omens"-mood, by Teri Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, which was a fantastic book.

I also love writing stories, articles, essay. I enjoy good jokes and I also make a few ones. I like to laugh a lot and I also enjoy been alone, especially in a serene environment My favourite places are gardens, good parks, under nice trees, back corners.Am actually an Accountant by profession and have a masters in banking and finance.
I also love to motivate people and love to teach people the sports I play.
I like to share this unpublished poem I wrote last year.

Five rain away

When you are five rain away
It is four pain this way
This life is different
The sun no more current
More than a seasonal thrill
Your sweetness can turn a mill

Give me a pencil to shade your smile
Then I would cast them by the seashore
And no wave can wash them away
Sometimes the moon hides in the night
But not since we took that walk
And comforted the night with our talk

What a country would leave her child to die
No guilt more cruel than that on the innocent
Who can tell how many angels wait at the
Gate to revenge
I stay still though I dance with my feet
You can’t remain low when steaming love
Invades your heart
Each territory I see you pass by
I build a tent to protect
Like a faithful country I tender you
till you come back five rain away

I've been a lifelong reader of good books and Great Books, lately more interested in understanding the background, analysis and interpretation of literature. My studies in university were focused on career needs more than all that interests me, and now that my kids are away at college themselves I've finally got time to dig into those things.

Glad to find a place to poke around in!

In my spare time I play competitive (semi-professional) rugby, I played three professional seasons in Portugal before starting my degree. I sporadically write poetry and am currently seeking publication. My particular literary interests are early-to-mid-20thCentury Irish fiction, American Gothic and Absurdist Dystopian. Her Beauty explains.

You are a queen of beauty, perfect in every way; no man can pass by you without his head turning back. She is spectacular, a beautiful girl, with long, wavy hair. There is absolutely no blemish from the crown of her head to the sole of her feet. There is definitely an extra work done in her body. Her beauty has stolen the heart gentlemen, even when ladies pass by, they commend, how beautiful is her face, and how gorgeous is her look. Her arm and hands are splendidly slender, like the robots of Silicon Valley. Her eyes are so beautiful, commanding men to come, making handsome men to stumble, with extremely beautiful double eye lids. Her body is so flexible like a bamboo, girls are dreaming, this is how I want to be. Her nail polished in brown sugar and the tail end like Swiss cream. She is pretty, what a beauty, her gently smile is fabulous, her laugh is kind of heavenly. I watched her surreptitiously as she walk in styles of an awesome steps; she is an empire of beauty and a sapphire of attraction. I also move closely to gaze, I was kind of scared of gaze abuse but I did get close to survey her true beauty. Her chicks succulent like the best of silk of moth caterpillars. Her face is gorgeous and her sharp nose is awesomely pointed like the slope of Olivet hill of Israel. No one else look like her, pretty lady, no face can be compare to hers. In her bikini, her butt is like the second half of a green calabash on the vine, it is beautiful, like a semi-circle, the other half in the mind of gentlemen, Her teeth are complete, set perfectly right, whiter than snow. Her lips like a gummy bear of the candy shop, her tongue like a gentle river that is not flowing. Never have I seen a beauty like this before in my entire life. Your graceful ear like a golden pendant of Milan, Italy, You are a real beauty, attractive in nature and complete in beauty. Your outstanding shape I desire, your hips I admire, her twin breasts are moderate, perfect in size like big orange of Florida, looking peacefully, laying joyfully on her chest, soft like jelly. There is peace in her breast and harmony on her nipple I imagine, yes pretty sure. Her beauty is making men to die alive, loosing their mind, excuse me, her beauty is truly amazing. Standing out between her head and frame, is her neck like a beautiful ceramic vase of China. She is not too light, neither too dark, she is like a brown sugar of America, pretty lady. The whole world is like a garden and she is the prettiest flower on it. Her solders standing straight and firm like the twin Baobab tree of Madagascar, uniting together in love, beautiful indeed. You look so lovely and beautiful, she can't offend me, I will give her my overflowing pardon, just for gazing at her. When she speaks, her voice is like a sea wave bubble; speak to me one more time. Your eyes are like sun set on the Boulevard of the stars, looking sharp. Men kept on talking about the wonders of her beauty. Her feature declares the perfection of her awesome look. Her face announces what true beauty is all about, looking charm and modest. She is so lovely, and comely, very lovely and beyond comely. Her wavy hair tosses magnificently, silky and curly, shinning like mid day sun. Her legs are beautiful and sexy and straight, too beautiful to describe, too awesome to commend. There are legs but hers legs standout and it’s outstandingly long. She is prim and proper, She appear like a blaze and walk majestically like an angel from heaven, an extreme step I can’t explain, walk it, and walk it like they do in the heavenly. It is as if her beautiful feet never touch the ground. She is beautiful in every understanding and wisdom; she is the analytical example of a beauty. She is like the red rose of summer and standing tall like the tower of England. Among gemstones is the rare and most expensive Alexandrite, but her beauty is costlier than many expensive gemstones combined. When she looks at me I loose my balance. Her hips are extra- ordinarily impeccable, like the woven basket of Sonora Mexico, I desire her hips. Her body perfume, too much to describe but more fragrance and even smells better than perfume of Paris. Her dress is magnificent and colorless like the sea of Jamaica, with lace edges like the rainbow in the sky, my God. If you are the last I saw before going to bed, my dream shall be sweet. I can’t blame her for flaunting; no one knows the secret of her beauty. Only in this world you will find a beauty like this, she has made the world to be outstanding in their understanding of beauty. I commend and compliment, you are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen and she said God is the only beauty maker in heaven and the earth, there is none like Him, and to God be the glory.

Hi,

My name is Danica. I am 19years old and have just recently re-started my love for all books classic! You can even say I love it better than the sci-fi books that my little sister is so deeply in love with. She's always keen to buy books about vampires, werewolves but I tend to stick to the old classics.

I am currently just starting i'm ashamed to say though. My collection of Penguin classics, despite them not being the original books, are quite interesting at very least. I love each and every one of them and you can always find me at the book shops buying every single one I could find. Long story short, I want to own my own books so I can read them over and over and over again without having to worry about return dates.

Anyways, I was born in Samoa but now currently living in Canberra, Australia. I love reading but have never had the time to actually just pick up a book and just enjoy it but is very grateful for the past few months of serenity in my life. Not only that, I am in love with music. As back on the home islands we grow up surrounded by music, I so too am growing up with music in my blood. If I am not busy with what life has to throw at me, I'm either reading or just jamming on my acoustic with the family and just enjoying the day. I love to write, just about anything that come to my mind if I have a piece of paper or am on the laptop I just write down anything and everything.

And for the finale, I just had come across this site after reading Thomas More's Utopia and trying to find a place to talk about it on Google! I saw this link so thought might as well and as it has turned out, it has become my favorite visited place today (:

So, you'll all see some posts from me in the future.

And that's me,

Danica (:

Hi folks
Im looking for a fantasy novel I read years ago...but cannot recall the title. It had an alternate fantasy world that the hero (young man) accessed via a seemly empty house with a guardian - a dancer who grew emensely fat and then was reborn but couldnt escape. she had done some something to end up with such a fate. the book had all sorts of elements - 3 witches who taught him his powers - he is some kind of master magician (Sidhe?) and there are quests in this other world- eventually the magical inhabitants start to cross over into our world. I now have lots of odd recollections...he had red hair and discovered he couldnt eat meat once he took on his powers! I apologise for this very scatter brained description. if any one can recall such a book I would be THRILLED!

I am searching for an answer concerning Daniel DeFoe's Robinson Crusoe.

There is an island 400 miles off the coast of Chile that is advertised

as the place where Alejandro Selkirk was stranded. This is said to be

Robinson Crusoe's Island. But, Robinson Crusoe was stranded off the

coast of Venzuela. Why is this never noted? Has no one read Robinson

Crusoe?

Hello, I'm a 14 year old from Manchester who usually says I'll do my homework, when, in fact I'm reading George Orwell's 1984 or reading I Capture the Castle. From this website I'm hoping to learn about new, books that I haven't read to death yet and learn other peoples opinions on those I have. I'm a huge indie-rock music lover and English Literature/Language and Art being my strong points.

I'm sorry I just copy/pasted this, but I'm not quite sure where I should post this. So here goes.

My name's Elske, I'm from Holland, though I'll be moving to the UK in two months. I'm an English student and I love the written art in all sorts and shapes.
I've just finished reading One Day by David Nicholls and I loved it. I tend to think about novels for ages after having read them and so I decided to sign up here so I can discuss my love for novels instead of bottling it up.

I hope I'll have a good time here!

Hello, my name is Chris, I am an avid reader and lover of critical approaches to literary texts. I have a deep interest in the Victorian Era and an exempla for the contradictory elements of Victorian life from Rapid progress and Nostalgia to political freedom and social constraint. I can't say I have a favorite piece of Literature, but if I had to give a definitive answer it would probably be Hamlet. I also like Virginia Woolf, who is my favorite writer, other stuff in Literature would be World Anglophone, African Diaspora, 20th century drama and Romanticism. I am working on a set of short-stories too. I am glad to be here.

Hello everyone. It's been quite a while since I introduced myself, before my book was published; so I thought I would just pop on here again and tell a little bit about myself. My name is Aileen Stewart and I am the children's author of Fern Valley - A Collection of Short Stories (http://amzn.com/1617395277) written for kids 8-12. You can find me almost anywhere, Face Book, Twitter, Goodreads, Shelfari, Google+, and on my website Fun For Kids (http://aileenw4bobbyg.tripod.com). I am currently working on a sequel to Fern Valley and a few other projects. Have questions about writing? Just find me on one of the aforementioned sites and we'll have a chat ;)

Hullo, all. Wilum Hopfrog Pugmire here.
I am here to dwell with others who love Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, poetry and H. P. Lovecraft. I write weird fiction exclusively as W. H. Pugmire. Last year I became obsess'd with the idea of my death and frantically wrote a bunch of new stuff and assembled various collections. As a result I will have had four books published this year -- insane, since the volumes will have to compete with each other in this age of economic woe. Those who criticize my work usually condemn it as antique and Victorian in tone. I contend that I am striving to write in the voice of High Literature, which is Timeless, but I do love the Yellow Nineties fin-de-siecle, to the point where I had my last book design'd so as to resemble a volume publish'd in Wilde's London, with yellow boards and Beardsley on ye front. (We chose the Beardsley illustration as we felt the gent therein resembled me in drag.) I have just conquer'd a tedious three-month block and am nigh feverishly working on ye next two books. When I grow weary from labor I go to my MrWilum channel at YouTube and promote my books. Being a confirm'd Queer Punk Exhibitionist, I find YouTube rather alluring. What was it that Quentin Crisp said: "Exhibitionism is a drug. You get hooked." Amen. I am happy to be here, although I probably will keep activity to a minimum as I need to get my arse in gear and work. The joy of writing, for me, is in the work. It is the great blessing of my existence.
:iamwithstupid:
(I see that I forgot to turn of ye italics after fin-de-siecle--I'm rather inept with this computer hoodoo...)

Hi People,

I love literature, and it's hard to explain how or why, but all I know is that literature always proves its relevance to real life, and through it there could be an understanding of what real life, sometimes it's like a sponge sucking away your fears and pain, and sometimes it tells you where to be wary and conscious, in all, its relevance runs deep and thick in our lives, and it is hard to let it go just like that, and it's difficult to ignore its relevance to our lives.

Hi everyone,

It doesn't look like people are actually reading this thread anymore, but I usually never get around to actually posting in forums, so here goes:

I'm a high school student and sick of it, I'm really looking forward to getting out of high school and going to university. I love literature and art history, because they both use similar sorts of thinking. I'm currently reading 'Nights at the Circus' by Angela Carter, but my favourite authors are George Orwell and Shakespeare. My favourite books are probably 1984, Down and Out in Paris and London, and Hamlet, but there's so much I haven't read yet, like Dickens and more Shakespeare and everything else. I have a constantly changing list of books that I want to read, I know I won't get to most of them but it means that when I need something to read I can go to that list. This year I have been doing a research project for school about George Orwell, which is due in a couple of weeks. I've done more than I need to but honestly it's so much fun, and I want to make the most of it. It's that project that made me decide that I'd like to study literature at university. I definitely want to do a PhD at some stage, and would like to end up a professor at a university in England someday (I'm from New Zealand).

Hello everyone.
I randomly decided to join a forum about literature today, and this is the address Google gave me.
I am a student, majoring in Social Sciences, and I have been reading full-ime since elementary school. Growing up, I always had problems finding people my age, as engaged in reading as me, so ever since long ago I gave up on discussing reading.
Then suddenly today, I was struck with an idea that I could do that on the Internet, so here I am.
My favorite writers would be Sidney Sheldon, Jack London, Walter Scott, and many more.

Hello Peeps, I've only recently joined the forum. I live near Bath in England. Apart from riding my motorbike and walking my dog Harvey I have been busy writing. If you have read the Mayor of Casterbridge or any Thomas Hardy novels you may be interested in it. It's a parody of Micheal Henchard called 'Henchard The Missing Years'. He lies, cheats and robs his way around America inbetween selling his wife and child and their subsequent return to Casterbridge. You'll find it on Amazon. That's kept me busy recently and I have now started writing a legal textbook.

Hi everyone. I'm 62 years old and do not have a formal education. Because of that I am self conscious to be here among college educated people. I wanted to go to college when younger but lacked confidence in my intellect and didn't have the finances. I have read the classics and enjoy classical music. I am getting along in years but read as much as I can, listen to great music, try to learn more every day, and appreciate the "finer" things in life. I especially enjoy philosophy, history, Thoreau, biographies on the founding fathers of America, landscape paintings and the natural beauty of the fall landscape of New England. I have lots of questions about music and literature so please be patient. I have tried to learn as much as I could on my own but there are so many things I have questions about.

Thank You

Nothing to be self-conscious about. I have only a high school education, and I doubt I'm the only one. I sometimes see depth in discussions that comes from a college education, and that makes me jealous. I also sometimes see a level of pretension and intellectual weenie-waving also fueled by a college education that I don't mind in the least not having picked up.

i love to read. wanna talk about books.

especially want to find out about books that i wouldn't have heard of before. im sick of the usual hyped up novels that appear each month, and the conventional authors that get front page reviews simply because of their name. Ian McEwan comes to mind.

i love raymond carver, thomas hardy, annie proulx, dickens, richard ford, dennis lehane, john mcgahern, william trevor.

Hi everyone,
Im Victoria, plodding on with the completely solitary task of writing a 30,000 word postgraduate dissertation on Urban Gothic literature from 1845-1900. While I am enjoying it, I decided having contact with other literary people live yourselves will probably go a long way to preserve my sanity whilst keeping me on track with the big task Im faced with.
I would mainly love to meet anyone in the same boat as me, or with any fascination concerning Victorian litertature.
Thanks, and nice to meet you all,

I love books, read everything from great literature to cereal boxes. However, the reason for my confusion is that I wanted to ask a question and could not seem to find a way to do that. I live in Florida, but I am a born and bred New Yorker - yes, NY, the city. Manhattan. I am there now and still have a thrill each time I go over the GWB. OK, so I have a great memory and remember plots, characters, etc. However, I am blanking on a story I read a few years ago. Is this the place to ask? Why can I not see where to post this? The story was written by a famous woman (American) author. It is a short story about two orphaned little girls who live with a mean aunt. She has them out on a dreary farm. They have no friends or toys. She gets a puppy and the children are thrilled. But just when the older girl is happy with her new friend, the aunt puts the dog into a school that trains dogs to be ferocious. It is a terribly sad story, but very moving. Any ideas? Can this be posted so that others may answer it? Thanks. Arianne

To begin at the beginning as Byron says. I managed to scrape one A Level in literature and flirted my way into University, and once there I became quite at home. I have gone slightly mad in a Neil Gaiman sort of way because I spent the best part of four years living in a welsh cottage with nothing but books, a parakeet, and a ferret for company. I love the Nineteenth century as it is surely the richest and most diverse for literature. I am a committed Byronist (currently doing my MA dissertation on Lord B and Wilde) and Romanticist in terms of academic study, but I also love the fin de siècle and French influence towards the end of the century, Huysman’s Au Rebours may just be my favourite novel. I also love poetry, especially Baudelaire, but mainly my tastes are very much rooted in the twentieth century. I have a particular passion for Ted Hughes as his poetry forms its own dark vein of English folk horror. I have just finished his Gaudete which transfixed me. I look forward to meeting fellow bibliophiles. And if you recognise my signature, we really ought to be friends.

This is my first post in what appears to be a very interesting blog. My passions are prose, poetry, religion, and philosophy. I really love Shakespeare, T. S. Eliot, and W.H. Auden and quote from them extensively when I post. My most highly recommend novel of late is "The Museum of Innocense" by Orhan Pamuk.

Nice to be part of those with a consuming passion for words....On the eve of India's 64th Independence Day celebrations, let me cite the words of Gandhiji pearls of wisdom about our major sins.."...politics without principles, wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, commerce without morality, science without humanity, and worship without renunciation of ego.."

politics without principles, wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, commerce without morality, science without humanity, and worship without renunciation of ego

At least on the surface, that is quite an apt summary of so many problems around the world today. I do understand that the world and it's issues are very complex, but nonetheless, I like the general sentiment.

Hello, Everyone,
I am new here. The Tiger's Wife brought me to this web site and I am pleased that Tea Obrecht did!
I am a retired English teacher, so that's it as far as age goes!!
I enjoy a good mystery -- not thrillers, particularly -- but a good mystery warms my heart and alerts my brain. Next, I enjoy historical fiction with one of the best I have read is Killer Angels by Shaara. I am not a great fan of non-fiction; however, I thoroughly enjoyed Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I am sure there were more, but that one stays with me.
Currently, I am reading The Imperfectionists. I am enjoying it -- strange, but interesting.

Hello all,

New to this site, found through google. I've decided I want to try and become a writer. I have no real idea how yet but I thought I'd give it a go. I have been toying with the idea for many years and have had a few ideas but never put pen to paper. I don't think I've ever had focus until now.

I've created a website to blog my progress, which is not at lot at this moment in time but keep watching and hopefully it will grow. The blog is only a week or so old and mostly has blog entries about the new web development skills I'm having to get to grips with.

To really kick start my new path in life I thought I better start writing, hence my google search bringing me here.

Shameless plug alert: please visit/bookmark my site if you're interested in how I get on - dare2write.com

No, I'm not trying to be funny. Weirdly enough, that's how I greet most of my friends (the ones who know I'm not as crazy as I seem). Well anyway, let's get on with the introductions shall we...

When we were in college, we had to take an aptitude test to determine exactly what field we would do best in &, ironically enough, I got advertising...& law, but that's irrelevant. Ironic because I think those in the field have to sell their souls to do well & I'm just not the type that can lie with a straight face or sell my own Grandmother to get ahead. So, I settled for trying to improve the quality of the online content we are bombarded with everyday. And (not blowing my own trumpet here on anything) I'm pretty good at what I do although, of late, I've become more & more disinterested in the repetitive rubbish I have to keep editing.

I have a Post Grad in Media & have been working for the past 2 years...so, not a lot of time. I've always been a bit obsessive about books but haven't been able to read anything of note in the last couple of years. I suppose that when you get so bogged down with work that you want to scream at the top of your lungs, you tend to read flakier literature rather than anything too complex. I feel all this flakiness has been slowly bringing down my IQ, which of course does not make me a happy camper. So, I'm doing an M.A. in Literature & working at the same time. Not easy, considering work hours & travel time but I hope I can make it work. I want to be an Editor at a publishing firm before I have one foot in the grave. And I was hoping to ask all you lovely people here to help get me there because I don't know a thing about literature really. Just stumbling along in the dark, hoping for some guidance. Oh, and I'm a quick learner **winks & grins**

Cheerio,
Susan.

New to this forum,

I was searching for free online literature material when I stumbled upon this place which, after spending a whole four hours perusing through, I think is the most awesome site in that field other than Gutenberg.org whose layout is pretty embryonic compared to this one in terms of ease in navigation. I am male, 18 years of age from Kenya, Africa. I chose 'mgemah' (spelled correctly without the 'h') as a user name which means <i> 'one who taps Palm wine' </i> in Kiswahili because that is exactly what I intend to do in this place (the wine here being knowledge, of course). I anticipate to learn a lot from my future interactions (with you) in this forum and also that maybe others will get to learn a thing or two from me too. The other reason why I decided to join is that lately, precisely for the past five months, I have developed a serious liking for literature and writing and I think it would do me some good if I could have some constructive criticisms of my "pieces", which I intend commence posting soon, by people who share the same passion as me.

I look foward to enjoying my stay here.

Thank-you.

Park Twain
09-08-2011, 02:51 PM
Hello!!! I have always loved Mark Twain (although I have not read any of his books to completion:). Besides the fact that I think he is a FOX, I felt a kindred-spirit in him and felt better about myself when I realized he was able to thrive while having a brain like mine. Twain said, "When you appeal to my head, I don't feel it; but when you appeal to my heart, I do feel it."

While I had not yet been diagnosed with ADD, I read a little out of one of his books where he was describing a scene in life: "......." & this is what lead me to this site!!!!!!!!

I need to know what book I got that "....." out of!!! It goes something like this: (I'm paraphrasing:) "re. a perfectly timed schedule of morning ritual where the slightest mishap could throw off his whole day...." ie. two minutes to shave, etc.

Hello everyone,

I stumbled upon this forum when i was looking for an analysis of he poem "Anecdotes for fathers" by William Wordsworth. And I am really glad I did. :)

I can very much relate to "Virgil's" Intro. I just finished my engineering and I am going to start working in an IT company Tata Consultancy Sevices as software engineer next month onwards. But my true love has always been and will always be literature. I read a lot, classics as well as contemporary, prose as well as poetry.
I was also torn between doing what my parents expected of me and what i really truly wanted. In the end I decided that my dad's logic of having a professional degree made sense and so I chose engineering and here I am. I painfully pulled myself through the final year and I have been wondering if it was the right choice. Anyway I intend to do something about my passion for literature. And Virgil, You inspired me.
So like I said I love reading. My last classic was Shakespeare's "Taming of the shrew" which was very difficult to get in print so I had to get an e-book. That brings me to "I hate ebooks!". I think there is nothing better than the feel of a really good hard cover book. :D My last book as such was "Chanakya's Chant" by an Indian author Ashwin Sanghi.
Currently I am reading "Lyrical Ballads and other poems" a collection of poems by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Both of them are my favourite poets. I am still a beginner and sometimes I have problems Inferring the hidden meanings of Poems and thats why I am really glad I found this forum.
I am also a self-taught poet thus the pseudonym, Dpettypoetess.:)
I hope I will be able to understand better the world of literature in which I wish to find a place for myself someday and also be able to contribute as per my capability.

I am just "Floating straight obedient to the stream" aimlessly. I hope I'll make friends here and become a part of the community. I am 18 so I wish to meet other teens here.

This site was near the top of the page when I googled "literature forums." Most people in my regular walk of life don't read much, or don't see it as more than casual entertainment. I started to wonder if I wasn't stunting myself, somehow, by not living in a place where it really mattered. It seems unlikely that I'll find an atmosphere like the one I want in my regular life. I've got an English BA; I'm unemployed; I make myself read history but I don't like to. Lately I've gotten really into Iris Murdoch.

09-22-2011, 01:21 PM
A little about me:

I think Moby Dick is hilarious and laugh out loud everytime I read it. My wife laughs at me for laughing out loud at Moby Dick.

Dostoevsky and Tolstoy are great, but so is Bulgakov. Mark Twain very well may be god. Margaret Atwood is a lion of American literature. Jane Smiley weaves beautiful stories. Kurt Vonnegut has the human raced pegged. Julian Barnes's prose is fantastic. Herta Müller's novels are absolute poetry on page. Jasper Fforde's imagination and wit are off the charts. China Mieville's incredible. Catch 22 is worth two or three readings. Lewis Carroll was a madman, but a brilliant one. I cannot read Kafka's Trial before bed. The Martian Chronicles is better than Fahrenheit 451. Tom Robbins makes me think by making me laugh.

I like to write about my black lab/mutt Tico and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
{edit}

I'm an attorney by training and by necessity, but an author by habit. My novel The Valley of Fire is a dark, humorous look at our inability to understand ourselves.

Cheers,
Brett Cottrell

Share my writing

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I want to share my writing with as many people as possible. Therefore I will publish my latest work as its written. Here is the first instalment. All comments, positive or negative, will be gratefully received.

The Birkeesh dilemma; dreams revisited.

A story that must be told.

Chapter 1

She stopped, swayed, listening for some obscure justification. Was this real, or a dream mocking her complacency. She didn't know, or even care! Only one thought entered her mind, the thought that she had avoided for too long. She feared that step, that ignomous step, not because it might be her last, but because it could end her journey. "Damn , damn damn!, her senses railed, fearing the vortex of despondency. Could one have ever imagined it would be so, she pondered, returning briefly to her time with the others. "What would they do"? "What would they say"? "Did they ever really care?". The vortex grew.

Rain lashed, gusts pillaging earth's autumn bounty. Cold, cold, cold, and heavy, like a pregnant swift. A capricious love indeed. Her mind wandered ,drifting to time within time, then time without time, then back. It was nice. If only Beckett had loved her as she had loved him. Did it have to be so? Perhaps. But it didn't really matter anymore. She had made her bed. Now she would sleep!

I savor the Shakespearean soliloquies of life with wonderment and awe. I have a passion for the subtle and often overlooked spiritual realm. I find inspiration in reflecting, journaling, listening to audio books and reading the written word.

Some of my favorite writers are Charlotte Bronte, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Jane Austen and Victor Hugo. Their narratives have helped me see the sub-currents of human interactions as well as self study. You can say they have also been my mentors in helping me to question convention, the media and consumerism.

I hope to discover one or two kindred spirits here.

Hi guys.

Though I studied an English and Media studies joint degree 8 years ago, I never read again until the last 6 months. I'm an EFL teacher in Madrid, I DJ in my spare time and I decided recently that if I could love cinema and music, why not lit too? So I've been tearing through as much classics as I can (fortunately I shipped a load of my books from Uni over here as well as my records!).

So far I've read:

Emma (Jane Austen)
Mrs Dalloway (Virginia Woolf)
A Tale Of Two Cities (Charles Dickens)
Ulysses (James Joyce)

and I'm now on Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen)

I'm far from the most widely read dude but the plan is to change this and maybe teach lit back in the UK once I've read enough (I've got a long way to go I think). Really enjoying all this so far, especially as I can read them for fun without a course pressuring me to study and analyse them intensively.

I've checked out the brilliant discussions going on on the said titles and I think this forum's the place to be.

Much love!

Eye Am Ona Mishon. Reading is one of my love to do's. I came here wanting to search for a book I read some time ago. can't remember the title or author. It is about a man with two sons. He sets up a boxing match and the winner would be trained in the phamaceutical business and the other would go away. Along the way a woman Maggie (Margret Rhodes ) enters the picture. She is trained and educated in the business by Henry's father. Later on they , Henry and Maggie become atrracted to each other but he marries a more suitable woman whose family owns another phamaceutical company and they marry and merge the two. She becomes his mistress. The wife's mother's name is Evelyn I believe. The brother that lost the fight wants to detstroy the brother that won. He finds a woman who looks like Maggie and goes to work perverting his life and those of the daughter (his niece) Henry has now had by the homely wife he was forced to marry through the arrangement of Henry's father and the woman's mother Evelyn. Maggie Rhodes becomes a big time land developer in what is now Orange County and ends of dying when fire sweeps the hills in Orange County , Ca. I'd love to read this again! It was so romantic and I'm running out of romance and this book could keep me in the game. LOL! Help! Ona
