Hello,
I've been poking around several fascinating posts, so I decided to register.

Introduction I guess?
Well, here goes.
I'm new here (very). Just joined today as a matter of fact, and thought I should probably introduce myself before charging in and posting, though I'm sure that's fun too.
My name is Jessica, though I much prefer Jessi. I am a High School Student, and I enjoy reading, writing, and especially creating my own characters, which I often like to base off of people I know or other characters I admire.
I also play club basketball, so I'm busy an awful lot.
Oh. And I am have just started writing a fantasy novel (In case I haven't said it earlier, I practically breath fantasy.), though I am only at about 90,000 words so far. Getting there.
I LOVE puzzles and picking out small details that others miss, which is why I enjoy riddles so much.
Usually I'm sarcastic and quite . . . jolly . . . to say the least, but when I am in the process of participating in something I love, I can become extremely serious.
Anyhoo, that's about all there is to me.
Oh! I almost forgot. I love Robert Jordan and am currently reading his Wheel of Time series.
Now THAT'S all about there is to me. Been looking around and love this site, hope to spend a lot of time here. =]

I am 30 years old.. wow.. where did it go? I have a wonderful husband and 2 great kids that I absolutely unconditionally love with all of my being.
I LOVE reading and writing.. and if I wouldn't have gotten pregnant right out of high school I would have done something in college to support that. Instead I started working to provide for my family, and only had time for the occasional book and writing a quick poem..... well until 6 months ago...
I was paralyzed from the waist down in april, and aside from my sons Football practice and therapy, I have alot of time on my hands (or sitting on my butt :). So I am writing again.. and enjoying it. I wallow in my own self pity from time to time... but for the most part I am a pretty positive person and believe that me getting paralyzed got me back to me... writing....So here I am, trying to write the poem that is in my heart, and the story that has been juggling around in my head for years. . . I hope that this forum is what I need, just a little more added to my open time. Haha. I look forward to listening to your thoughts and ideas, and maybe making a few friends along the way..
That sums it all up really.
Well, there is also that my prefered genre is sci-fi/fantasy.
Here's a little anecdote: I just read The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut today and am now reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Considering that one is far left wing, and the other far right, I just found it kind of surprising that both made equal amounts of sense to me.
I hope that means I'm open minded, and not that I'm an apathetic sheeple.
One last thing, I guess, I'm, uh... well I also enjoy playing music, hopefully I can turn it into a living someday.

Hey, I'm Kaj, I'm an English major and I love literature. Right now I'm really into Haruki Murakami, Richard Yates, and Proust. I love traveling and getting out, but the idea of a life spent going to the beach and reading book doesn't sound like hell to me, or even purgatory. Hoping I'll have the patience and attention span to make it through the Old King James someday

Hey everybody, I'm Alex! I'm a high school student, and I'm really into fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and stuff like that. Well. I guess that's it. I'll be posting some stories in the previously mentioned genres, so if you're into that kind of stuff keep an eye open. Cool.

I'm new to these forums as a participant, although I have been lurking about reading the threads for quite awhile. I have to say I thoroughly enjoy the discussions here.
My reading preferences lean towards classics, sci fi, fantasy, horror and historical fiction. I've recently begun working my way through the 1001 Books to Read Before you Die, with a few modifications; I saw that there is a top 100 list suggested by members of this site and am glad to see that the two lists mirror each other. Maybe I can work a bit on both ;)
I look forward to speaking with you all.

Hi hi! I am excited to get reading some of your stories. This should be a lot of fun. I can't wait to play more on here. I'll be posting my first story today. Kinda the beginning to a series that is always evolving. XD Thanks for reading this! Oh and I guess my style of writing tends to be kinda fantasy, sometimes horror side.

Hi there
so ...I'm Lady Disdain. Obviously not my real name, but you can call me that here =}
I like reading. Yup, huge revelation. To be more specific...I like reading anything that's worthwhile. Often you don't find this out until you actually start reading books, I know. Lately, I've gotten into this bad habit of leaving off books when I'm only halfway - that's mostly the YA genre, though. A lot of the paranomral crap which have been published off Twilight's backs make me do that. Which is why I don't read them anymore. Not to say that there aren't good YA books out there - there totally are; Libba Bray and David Levithan are two of my favorite YA authors, they sure know how to write, something which a lot of YA authors don't seem to know. Oh, and Melina Marchetta. She rocks my wooly socks. Otherwise I read historical fiction - huge Jane Austen fan, trying to finish Mansfield Park, the last books out of hers for me to read. Also love Jane Eyre. I love classics - the idea that certains books have had been able to stand the test of time, to me, is amazing. It is my dream that I also write something like that. This is why I love Shakespeare - I think he was a genius.
I also love satires - anything that makes fun of people, our habits, our pop culture. So if you know of any books that do this, pls recommend some :) I also love thrillers, mind-bending novels, things that look into the darker side of humanity - things like Poe's. I love Mr. Poe. A lot of my writing is similar to his - or is inspired by his, I should say. Let's not get too presumptuous.
I love Beatrice off Much Ado About Nothing - hence my user name.
I am a student doing a science and arts degree - torn between love of english and reluctance to rely on an english degree alone. Plus some other, boring factors. But embarking on this English degree has introduced me to a lot of new literature.
I have a long list of classics that I wish to finish before I die. The one I recently finished was A Tale of Two Cities which pissed me off to no end. Well, actually, the character, Lucy Manette pissed me off to no end. Sydeny Carton, I love you.
I can be classified as the girl who doesn't love Mr. Darcy, but Mr. Rochester. He's the official bad boy of literature. Drool.
I can also be classified as a mild feminist - not one of the angry ones (mostly). I hate double standards. I hate hypocrisy, though it abounds.
I will read anything except science fiction. But I probably shouldn't shun them, but we humans always do what we shouldn't so I am, of course, off the hook. Yes? =)
I am insanely bored at the moment which is why the length of this intro is proportionally and insanely long. Sorry about that. If you were bored enough, you have managed to read till these last few lines. Hope to see you ppl around.

I am a musician and composer who reads a lot of fiction. Among my favorite authors are William Gaddis (which you might have guessed from my screen name), Cormac McCarthy, David Mitchell, Dostoyevsky, and Hugo. I'm not sure what this forum is all about but think it is worth looking into. That's all for now.

Hello, I am glad to find this site and meet some new friends. I am a 51 year old female, married, have 5 children ages 9-19, work full time, and live in Israel. A couple of years ago my kids got big enough that I finally had a little bit of free time, so I resumed my old and beloved hobby: reading. My passion now is the British classics, although I will occassionally read something newer if it is clean and well done.
I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, but (sorry to offend anyone) I found it very boring work. I didn't major in English because I prefered math, but I always loved to write poetry. I wrote a book a few years ago about my spiritual experiences. When I had one friend read it, she said she loved it. That was gratifying, but still no one will publish it.
My recent excursion into the British classics started with everything I could get my hands by Arthur Conan Doyle (there is a lot more than Sherlock Holmes). After that I added various other authors like Austen, Bronte, Gaskell, to name a few. I have collected a lot of books in the hopes that someday I will have more time to read! I have also recently discovered sites where you can read or listen to all kinds of books for free.
I recently read Travels in the Interior of Africa, a true and fascinating story of a British adventurer in the 1700's. The latest book I read is Ruth by Elizabeth Gaskell. That was a gut wrenching, unforgettable tale, as captivating as The Count of Monte Cristo (at least for me). If anyone has read Ruth and wants to talk about it, please write to me because I have so many questions about WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY they each did what they did!!!!! It was such a thought provoking story! I only wish they each could have found happiness with each other!!!!! I suppose that was not the point of the story though.
I am not a professional writer, so please don't be too harsh with me - when I have time I do try to write correctly. Actually, I spent some years as a volunteer editor/proofreader.
I look forward to participating here when I have time. Blessings to everyone.

Hi, glad to be here and looking forward to learning something new. My name is Dan, from the Rochester, NY area.
My dad always tried to get me to read as a kid. Never really did with a few exceptions. Mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and some horror. About ten years ago I read an article by a world war II bomber pilot and was instantly interested in reading more like it. I started buying books about the bomber war over Europe, mostly first-hand accounts. Then I started buying history books on the same subject. I eventally began reading about the air war in the Pacific as well and even some other forces accounts such as the navy. I have read about 200 such books. Between these I also read a few early-American history books.
I was in the USAF and got into Stephen King and Clive Barker. Recently, at the library, I was searching for a new air war book when I came across Clive's Mr. B. Gone. I checked it out and remembered how much I enjoyed reading him before (20 years before...). So, I now have purchased most of his works and more of Stephen King's for the upcoming winter. Apparently I needed a break from reading pilots memoirs and history.
Currently I am almost done with Barker's Imajica.
Anyway, I do like to read; more so as I have aged. Any recommendations similar to Barker would be appreciated!

Hello everyone! Nice to be here, um, yeah!
(I know, my username sounds like a robot, doesn't it? But since I'm on an iPad, I figured it would be cool. Anyway..)
Yeah, I'm young and whatnot, but I'm perfectly capable of functioning on a literary website!
I doubt this is important, but I'm Chinese and Irish. And my hair hates me.
I live in Carlsbad, California, and I love reading - though- my love has been drowned in the attempt at reading Ulysses by James Joyce. My English teacher was talking about its immense difficulty to read. I was intrigued, though, and picked it up. He laughed at first, it's been nearly a month and he's stopped laughing.
Um, I'm planning to work for Blizzard Entertainment when I'm older.. (yes, I play World of Warcraft). I guess you could say I'm a little young to have decided what I might spend my life doing. You never know.
So I suppose that's it.

Hi guys, I've been a member of this forum a while but not posted anything yet so I thought I'd start by saying hello.
About me, basically my name is Robin, I am a 2008 graduate of Bath Spa University (BA (Hons) Psychology and English 2/1). My modules at uni were in Gothic, Poetry, Literary Theory, Shakespeare and Literature and the Environment (Ecocriticism). I've a feeling I've missed one out somewhere, but never mind.
I've always been interested in literature, ever since I first saw 'Oliver' on tv as a child, although I suspected my early reading of 'A Christmas Carol' also helped. I've always had a romantic streak and also been quite empathic, and something of the sadness in Dickens novels really got me I think. That feeling stays with me to this day, and I just love it when there's a new Dickens dramatisation out on tv (Andrew Davies is the king of these at present in my opinion - watching 'Little Dorritt' again on DVD).
Besides Dickens I also like Wuthering Heights, Tess of the D'Urbevilles, all things Gothic, Shelley, Keats, Shakespeare.... well loads of stuff really, but those works are perhaps my favourites.
Starting to ramble, so thats it for now.
Ciao.

First of all I would just like to say how glad I am that I finally found a site such as this.
So here's some info on me: I live in Sweden, absolutely love reading and sometimes writing too. My mom's german and father's swedish (not that it really matters), and I know both languages. My interests, besides reading, are hiking, fishing, camping and other outdoresy stuff. I simply love nature.
In short I'm really too be here, cheers!

Hello, everyone. [: So far, the intros have been tough to beat, but I really hope to try my best with this!
My name is... Ely Massacre. =P I am 18 years old, and some-odd months. This type of thing, posting stories in a forum [or just using a forum] is pretty new to me. So I hope you guys can be patient when I post! Sorry if I screw anything up, just say, "Ely, babe, blah blah blah".
My favorite thing to do is write. My hand has been moving across paper since before pre-school, and I've been reading for about that long as well. I don't really have a favorite book [though I posted one on my "About me", simply to post something there]. Currently, I've been following Christopher Pike and Richelle Mead. They write the best [modern] vampire books yet. No, I am not a Twilight fan. In any way. :/ GTFTO. Other than writing and reading, painting is another passion of mine. My first works to be submitted into [next year's] art show is of a picture my mother took. I might post it, once my teacher returns my painting to me! At this very moment, I'm watching comedy central. Not really on my personal "T.V. Guide", but it's a Saturday. What are you really going to find on television! Favorite shows include: Spongebob [I'm dead serious], aaaall the Nick classics [RIP ):], as well as CSI and watching paranormal investigations with my family.

Hello, all. This is Madame speaking, obviously, and I'm glad to be here. Since the beginning of time, my hobby and passion has been writing, and I hope to one day-probably in the next few minutes, honest, haha- spread my talents onto you all. Ooh, that sounded narcissistic, but hopefully, you understand what I mean. I'm not going to write a long paragragh about myself, for whatever I have to say, it will be expressed in my writing. I'm just going to hope that you read what I have to say, and that you critique me without mercy.

Today was the first day I decided that if I am lost in plain sight, then I can find me if I listen with my eyes closed..new place in my journey.
I have never read much poetry, mostly high school stuff. Today I layed on my bed watching T.V., "GI Jane" all the time thinking I should get dressed and do something constructive, I found my self giving in to "not feeling well" and going back to bed...then all at once I found myself looking for more about the poem at the end...."Self-Pity". I discovered that I can take the first step and will continue to pray for the next...Thank you Trixi

Bonjour tout le monde!!
I give up pretending to be french wouldn't last very long anyway... So ive been revealed as a English speaker masquarading as a frenchie. Not a good start i fear.
I joined today after much pondering over whether it is the right idea or not. I have joined a lot of forums before and never contributed so I'm hoping that this is where that all changes (I wouldn't hold out guys and gals).
Confession first. My grammer is bad and so is my spelling. Im not apologising for it only establishing a mutal agreement between me and the grammer nazis. I dont think someone should feel 'banned' from using certain words and phrases because of it's difficult to spell or you don't think you've written the sentance correctly. So no 'down-on-my-knees' apology here.
As i believe everyone is on this forum I get excited by literature and writing. I wont elaborate. To find out more see the posts that I will post in the future.
I've written too much already. I planned only a short blast of introducing. Nevermind
Goodbye for now world... See you further down the path

Hi, I've decided to become one of those people that post in forums. Which is good and bad.
Good: I can express various pent-up thoughts and emotions.
Bad: Those that enjoy the human language will see me harm it with multiple misspellings, misapplied comma's and run-on sentences.

Hi,
I'm new to this blog. I'd thought it would be fun to join an elitist group who discuss literature and post thoughtful things about it. I'm actually a bit stumped as to how I make a post on my blog and as simple as the FAQ section is, I'm technologically inept.
The catalyst to my joining of this community is essentially the dismal mark which i received for a short story that I wrote, thus I would like to seek validation elsewhere.
If anybody could possibly shed some light on how to post on the blog feature or even pm some of the stories, it would be immensely and inexplicably appreciated. If somebody would also like to read my "modern fairytale" [which is relatively short] just drop me a line.
Lee Black.

Yes, I am brand new to the site and looking forward to reading many posts. Favorite books was one suggestion to include in our introductions. They certainly change over time, don't they? So many of mine are British: Wodehouse, Dickens, Thirkell, Durrell, Martin Gilbert. I'm getting in to African lit now and read as much non-fiction as I can fit in--almost all of it about nature and wildlife.
Not a movie goer. Should I be ashamed to admit that?
Music--Elvis Costello, The Pogues, the Clash, some Jackson Browne, the Black Keys, the Radiators from Space, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Handel. The list goes on.
Hello again to everyone. This could be a pleasant learning experience.

Oh wow. I thought 'Hey, I'd like to read all of these.' Then I noticed how many pages there are. I may yet get to reading all these introductions, which look interesting in their own right, but certainly not tonight.
On to my own Intro. My name...well my pen name, is Nayeri Wolf. This came from a character of mine ages ago. Let's see. I'm currently in school to get my Bachelor's in Education (though I'm still on my second semester). I'm an avid reader, as well as a would be author. I am known in the fanfic worlds, but I've yet to finish a book of my own. Favorite books are hard to place. I like pretty much all of them. There are some I've never been able to get into, however, despite being classics. I could very well go on forever, but I don't wish to bore anyone with my self-introduction.

Hi,
I'm Chloe. I'm currently in Canada but am moving to New Zealand at the end of October. I love to read and would love nothing more than to sit and read all day long (if at all possible!) and I'd probably read all night too! (have done so many a time!).
Dream job would obviously be one in which I could read books! Thinking of doing a Library Science degree :) Although currently working in the health care field.
Can't really think what else to write, I'm not good with this type of thing!
Look forward to meeting new people on here!

10/25/10 dear people, my name is david burkenroad. I have been an attorney since 1983 and a sole practitioner since 1997. I am also a writer, who has written a historical article on a southern california topic (which was published) and unpublished nonfiction and fiction. I have few hobbies, reading, bicycling, swimming. I like to work, and i consider work enjoyable. I have also raised three children, who are now in college or working after going to college. I am interested in many things. Among them is that i think that the protestant martin luther allowed the growth of capitalism, in europe and great britain, after he broke with the catholic church and its prohibition of charging interest. Capitalism continued to break the power of the church, which was based on land, not work (industry, commerce). I am also intersted in ways to reduce the effect of global-warming gases.

Hello, my name is Roptat Lenz, pronounced Ropetyat lence, and I have been writing for quite some time. I am a 17 year old International Baccalaureate student, and I love creative outlets such as poetry, writing, and music. I began wriing at age 3, when I learned to read, and I have not stopped since- however, in the intervening years, I have dramatically improved my skills, and I have attained the paid position of staff writer on many websites.
My preferred outlet for literary creativity is the short story, closely followed by the roleplay. My standards for English are very high, and I have been referred to as "The Anglic Nazi," and "Old fuss and feathers." I hope my stay here will be enjoyable, and I hope to contribute in every way possible.

Bonjour, I recently decided to join this forum, after many weeks of viewing the posts. I am in high school and looking at colleges with nursing programs. My favorite pasttime, of course, is reading, especially Dickens, C. S. Lewis, Tolkien, and Chesterton. As I sometimes have difficulty understanding such authors as Dostoyevsky and Hawthorne, I greatly look forward to viewing and participating in the discussions. Au revoir.

Yes, I've finally surrendered to my nerdiness for literature--for who would fardels bear, to grunt and sweat in a primitive scholarly environment, the sustenance of which being mostly tasteless young adult novels, but that the dread of something succeeding apathy, the very much discovered country from whose bourne every pimply traveler returns, frightens the will and makes us rather bear those ills we have than skip to others we know not of? Thus, conscience doth make conformist cowards of us all, and thus the native hue of astounding resolution is sickled o'er with the pale cast of childish and sometimes adult fantasy, and enterprises of great pith and moment with this regard their currents turn awry, and lose the name of reckless action.
TL;DR: I love literature so I decided to join this forum.

I am a new member to this forum. I am re-reading Anthony Trollope's Barsetshire novels. In The Small House At Allington (1864) he is writing about people dining together. He says that the diners could not speak freely until the "the door was tiled, and the servants were gone." Does anybody out there know the meaning of the phrase "the door was tiled"?

Hi, I'm in high school. I love to write, read, draw, and act. I usually write what I call fragments or short stories that are between 100-1500 words. Someday I want to write a full book but I haven't gotten around to it. I'm a very bad procrastinator and I get distracted by things way to easily. If I start on a fragment I don't work on anything else until it is finished. I'm always behind in school but hopefully that will change. I have a theater group that I act with and I love very much. My family and friends mean a lot to me. I also like a lot of random things like butterflies, pennies, socks, hats, note books, pencils, curly hair, smiling people, hugs, my nose, paper, and carrots. That's me. :seeya:

Hi everyone, I'm new today, and found this site on google while looking for a short story that I read while taking my credential classes back in the 70's. The name of the story is "Smilin Dan". It was in a school reading enrichment book published by SRA, (Science Research Associates) now run by Mc Graw Hill. It was about a sheriff who has to kill his son, to protect the jail house from a town lynching. Great story. The kids and I wrote words to a ballad that I composed for them, and we sung it in class, bit I never made a copy of the sing. I've always been a miss for that. Please help me find the story, or the reading book with the story collection that includes this one. Thanks.

Hello to all!
It's been too long since I read something truly engrossing! I like historical novels (Colleen Mccullough's "Masters of Rome" series) but have been smitten with fantasy since first reading LOTR when I was very young. My absolute favorite authors are Weis and Hickman, I love all of their books (although I was somewhat disappointed with the ending of "The Death Gate Cycle"), I thoroughly enjoyed the first several "Wheel of Time" books, but the series started to get weighed down with characters and political intrigue; I stopped ready after the 10th book and vowed not to continue until the series ended; I'm hoping that Brandon Sanderson will do justice to end the series. Oh, and of course, "Harry Potter", which I considered very enjoyable light reading. I've read many others, but those are my favorites. Is there anyone who has similar tastes that can recommend similar fantasy author's? Greatly appreciate it. Hope you all have an extraordinary day!

Love the idea of posting and sharing thoughts and ideas on literature and poetry. I would appreciate any suggestions of great stuff you have read recently!

Hi, all! Just stumbled across this site while helping my daughter with her 'Othello' paper. Literature is one of my three favorite things in life. Hope to have some great discussions and meet like minded folks.
My favorite genre is fantasy aka LOTR, but I read all sorts of books. Just finished reading Catcher in the Rye for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. It was easy to read but captured the universal angst of the modern teen.
To- Robinhood3000: Shiny signature! Keep Serenity flying! Browncoats forever!!!
Hi, noticed that you have some of the same tastes in fantasy books as me. I read some of the Wheel of Time books, but they did seem a little bogged down to me as well. The Amber Chronicles by Roger Zelazny are a very good 'light read'. Don't have to think too hard but they are loads of fun. If you want something heavier, have you ever tried The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson? They are not for everyone, but I personally love them. Unlike most popular fiction, Donaldson writes on a college level. His characters and plots are very real and intense. It might take a while to get into them, but they are almost on par with LOTR in my opinion. Hope this helps. Good reading.

Hi,
The name I use is a combination of my first and last name (first three letters of each). I'm 17 and currently a senior in high school. My hobbies include theater (acting), writing, music (bass guitar, flute, percussion, and a little piano), gaming, and visual arts (favorite mediums=charcoal and printmaking). At the moment I'm planning on pursuing a degree in either art education, theater, or graphic design. I love literature (obviously), and am often found sitting in Borders for hours.

This really isn't an introduction I was actually writing something on something else I saw and just copied and pasted this here. Well I am happy to join this network. I hope my visits will be enriching and will help me to develop a greater love for literature and all it has to offer. I haven't really read a book in a long because school work takes up so much time but if there is anything that you would like to suggest I am open to suggestions. The seasons come and go like today's trends they are here today gone next week. Funny isn't it, what they call a passing cloud. It is literall a cloud passing over head like all others but this one decides to bring rain with him. I truly love descriptions about nature and trees and fauna and flora so I guess this includes 'The Seasons'. All in all hi, how's it going, How's the weather or season ha ha ha. I may have enter the wrong place so please forgive me if this has nothing to do with the subject.

HELLO,everybody, i am so called Chinese guy, and i cannot find many people around me who does english reading, now people even seldom reads. But I still cling to the fath that man needs reading to save his soul because one's phiscal (allow me to use this ugly term) relationships, or we say, real relationships, could not give substantial mental support to satisfy peoples' desire to utter himself and communicate with others, espcailly in our current society, in which we always feel sunk in solitude.
recently i am reading around ANNA KARENINA translated by Maude, i hope somebody can just talk with me over something that we read in common.

Hello everyone. I'm new (first post!). I'm excited to start reading and discussing books with everyone, and getting to know this group. I'm 26, and recently graduated from Utah State in Composite Biological Teaching. I'm not a teacher yet, but hopefully I can find a good local position for the coming year. I also just got married on Nov. 6th, and am starting a new adventure with married life.
My first date with my husband was actually "supposed" to be a chance to pick out the first book we wanted to read for a book club between the two of us. We did end up picking a book, and reading it (like...halfway). I really just wanted an excuse to see him a bunch...so, that fizzled out pretty quickly when we both realized we were much more interested in each other than books.
But, now that I've sealed the deal with him, I think it's about time I try my hand at a real book club. It does sound fun :)

However, I look forward to checking out the site and reading new poets and writers.

My brain is dangerously aware that we are all involved in a thus far unsolvable mystery. I'm a socialist girl and I like it. I'm an atheist/vegetarian/artist/actress/writer. My sense of humor is like Sarah Silverman's, but with almost zero jokes about excrement. I am far too attractive to have normal relationships with anyone in the real world, so I am here.
I love quality cinema and I love mocking horrible movies. I like to play pretend a little too much. I hope no one makes the mistake of taking me too seriously, because SHUT UP! Really though, I am sweetness and light.
My secret reason for being here: I followed a boy.
Welcome to knowing me, and congratulations! ;)

Hey
I'm an English lit graduate. To be honest I have never been interested in literature until collage. I was just interested in foreign languages. But now I love reading. It forces you to overthink everything about life and try to solve this eternal mystery. Ironically my other hobby is drumming and I absolutely don't want anything on my mind other than the noises of the skins I'm beating while performing.
Also English is not my native language. Turkish is.
Nice to meet you.

Hi,
Im a Irish-Luxembourgish and a student. I've lived in France and Luxembourg but never in an Enlgish speaking country but english is stil my first language. I'm not really interested in literature, in fact being dyslexic I avoid literature. However recently a couple of friends and my girlfriend have somehow bullied me into trying to write poetry because I apperantly talk poetically or talk "in poems" as they put. Seeing as I'm not at all sure this is in anyway my thing I doubt I'll be here long, but anyway . . .
I think thats about it.

I am a newcomer to the site and needing distraction this week I have immersed myself in Goethe , reading both The Sorrows of Young Werther ( for which there are already many threads I notice) and Elective Affinities for which there is scant discussion on any internet forum. I have picked up Goethe for the first time ever I am ashamed to say. I have been under the weather and my lethargy (coupled with the snow outside and difficulty in moving out of the village) have allowed me to read greatly and to really appreciate the wisdom of the German Romantic writing back in 1770-1800s. He draws metaphysical conclusions which he reaches through observing people during his Journey Through Life and emphasises the vital richness of personal experiences in shaping our world views. His conclusions are timeless, observing some people are driven professionally and physically to build and to work, to acquire reputation and personal position, whereas others are driven emotionally and spiritually with sensuous experiences paramount in their schemes of life , and vital to their very existence, and for whom material possessions are an irrelevance.
While his first novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther, featured a hero driven by unrequited love to suicide, the eponymous hero of his second novel, Wilhelm Meister, undergoes a journey of self-realization. Try this for a wonderful metaphor for life : All the world lies before us, like a vast quarry before the architect. He does not deserve the name if he does not compose with these accidental natural materials an image whose source is in his mind, and if he does not do it with the greatest possible economy, solidity, and perfection. All that we find outside of us, nay, within us, is object-matter; but deep within us lives also a power capable of giving an ideal form to this matter. This creative power allows us no rest till we have produced that ideal form in one or the other way, either without us in finished works or in our own life."
If you haven't tried Goethe I can recommend him unreservedly - timeless and engaging narratives.

In undergrad I was torn between lit and engineering, at least at first. I wound up taking six years for my undergrad diploma, combining english lit classes with engineering. I wound up graduating with over two hundred credits, a rediculously inefficient amount.
Well, don't feel bad, I took me fifteen years to get my BA, though part of that interval was spent in the military and part working.
With formal training in both lit and engineering you may see things differently than many people, which could be advantageous if you can figure out what to do with it. You can look at it as straddling a fence or building a bridge, your call. The application of knowledge is not restricted by fields of study.

Hello community! And Merry Christmas!
(Oh, it's alright, I'm politically incorrect.)
I'm new to this site and I saw the invitation to Start Here!
So, I promptly responded to someone else's post and now
here I am with my intro. In brief, I enjoy writing, woodworking,
playing guitar and trying to keep up with advances in science and technology.
I also enjoy hearing other peoples ideas and perspectives,
so thanks for inviting me.

I'm not really interested in literature, in fact being dyslexic I avoid literature. However recently a couple of friends and my girlfriend have somehow bullied me into trying to write poetry because I apperantly talk poetically or talk "in poems" as they put.
I have worked with kids who were challanged when it came to learning. I learned some interesting things about myself from these kids. Each of us has ways in which we learn. In my case, I am a very visual learner. I read things and pick them up quickly. But it had always bothered me that I had such a poor memory for names. It became a problem when I was I was in high school. In a social situation I was usually introduced to other people verbally, "Leo, this is Voluptua Smith, Voluptua, this is Leo." "Oh, Hi!" "Hi, nice to meet you." And within twelve seconds of meeting this beautiful girl, I had no clue as to what her name was! "?#%@&!"
However, I discovered, if she had a nametag, no problem! Cool! But I couldn't expect every good looking girl or anybody else, for that matter to put on nametags, outside of special events. But then I realized that I could meet someone and as soon as I heard their name I could picture it written out... on paper... or, on the wall in spray paint! Whatever! When I did this I was usually able to remember their name.
In your case, it's the written word that's a problem. So what can you do?
One way around that is, if you're on your computer, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Accessibility, Narrator and you can have an adjustable narrator voice read whatever is on the screen to you, out loud. This might be one way to get around your dyslexia and not have it limit your involvement with literature. Try it out. You can do the same in reverse using windows voice dictation to speak what you want to say to people on the internet, rather than having to type it.
As for your poetic tendancies, I write poetry and I believe that doing that is a very good exercise for the mind. I would do it anyway, but I've realized that when you compose poetry you are coordinating your creative and analytical faculties; you're getting your right brain and left brain to work together on a project! That's something Einstein was very good at.

Hello!
I am a newbie here, like many. In fact, this is my first time posting in any kind of forum. Kind of surprising (to me, anyway), because I spent four recent years of my life attending online college to acquire my bachelor's degree in communication. Maybe I just got onlined out.
I joined this forum after investigating several similar sites because it looked friendly, and I have a question I will ask as soon as I find the appropriate place to post such a thing. I am encouraged to see a wide diversity in your ranks, both in age and experience.
I love reading. That's about all I need to say on that, I suppose. :)

Hi everyone, I'm Seaturtle.
I'm originally from South-West England, but currently stranded on the edge of the Sahara, in an interesting but rather book-less place, hence I've come here to get my fix of book-love.
I'm a life-long book addict, and love reading all sorts of books; the more wide ranging the better. Everything from the 'classics' to the occasional 'trashy' blockbuster, I'll give anything a go. All the better to learn about this strange and wonderful world of ours.
Anyway, pleased to make your acquaintance, and I look forward to communicating with all you literature-lovers out there.

Hello! I live in the United States, and English is my first language, though I'm trying to teach myself Russian (not working out too well haha). I'm an avid reader, when I can get my hands on a decent books, and I love to write. My current project is a fiction/science-fiction novel that I've been working on for at least two years now.
So... um... yeah. XD Nice to be here.

01-02-2011, 07:50 PM
I am an American living in West Africa, and one thing from America that I really miss is the library! I was excited to find this website. I graduated with a B.A. in Bible/ Theology and certification in elementary education. I love teaching children, but one of my passions is 19th century literature. I speak both English and French, and am working on learning one of the local African dialects.
I don't have as much time for reading, writing, or internet surfing as I would like to, as I am a mother of two boys, ages 7 months and 3 years. But I am married to a wonderful man who loves long discussions about religion and philosophy, and helps to stimulate my intellect beyond the level of my Nick Jr.-loving preschooler.
I hate picking User names, but I chose ThereisTruth because I believe that the common American mentality that you can decide for yourself what is real is completely illogical and dangerous. Certain questions in life fall under the category of opinions, but for others there are right and wrong answers. Don't worry--I am not a hateful, attacking type of person in regard to my beliefs. But I do like to get into honest, logical discussions about questions in life that really matter. I am always interested to find out what other people believe and why. I like to think through issues carefully and look at all the angles of a question to see if my belief really holds up or if it needs to be changed.

01-04-2011, 08:30 AM
Hi, I'm Rocket. I'm an 18 year old A Level student from England majoring in English Literature. I am also a keen thespian, so no surprise that my favourite playwright is Shakespeare. I often go to The Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford Upon Avon to see Shakespeare's plays and I have also participated in acting workshops there. I am currently doing an Extended Project as part of my A level studies on the relevance of Shakespeare for young people in the 21st century. I have created a questionnaire to find out young people's perceptions of Shakespeare; unfortunately, the feedback I have received so far indicates that young people do not seem to be aware of the relevance of Shakespeare's plays in our society today. This makes me sad because, in my opinion, Shakespeare is as relevant today as he was 400 years ago and I want to share that knowledge with all the young people whose lives could be enriched by becoming aware of the depth of insight into human nature and wealth of wisdom in the works of Shakespeare. I would be very grateful if any of you have ideas about how Shakespeare could be made more interesting or seem more relevant for young people. Many thanks and happy new year to you all. Hello everyone! My name is Mark. I'm a 38 year old bookworm living in Burlington, Ontario. I've been a hardcore reader since my early teens. Up until a few years ago, my interests were primarily in Greco-Roman literature, though I'm now much more interested in more contemporary literature. Right now, I'm working my way through the great books of Joyce, Kafka, and Beckett. I'm also quite interested in classical and contemporary Japanese literature. I look forward to getting to know everyone better!

I'm Marina from Spain, hello everyone.
I love reading -obviously, and I have joined this forum to meet new people and have interesting exchanges of ideas and opinions on books, authors or any subject for that matter.
I enjoy reading classics as well as current authors and I can enjoy the occasional blockbuster as well.
Hello to all of you.
I am a disabled Vietnam veteran. My wife and I live on a forty-acre ranch in Colorado. We have five horses, a pony, a donkey, fourteen sheep, and two cats. These mammals are our family.
For many years I have been studying and researching the Kethib (letter-text) of the Hebrew Garden of Eden narrative (Gen. 2:4 thru 3:24) found in the Masoretic Hebrew Tanak (a.k.a. Old Testament). In the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas (36:22 thru 25), “five trees in paradise”, there is a direct reference to the Hebrew Garden of Eden narrative. It is my hope to explore, examine, and discuss these two ancient texts with those on this forum who are interested.
I look forward to our interaction,

Hey everyone. Fresh meat.
I was getting a bit bored of the other forums I whore so I searched and found you lot. I'm halfway through my first novel--a satire and commentary on how the digital age has desensitised a socially-hungry culture... or something like that and add in a stalking ex, some contracted nasties, a guy called Cabbage who sells his PC and moves to Wolverhampton to live with a single mother he met the week before on some site (maybe it's called findadaddy.com), add in some more stuff but yeah, I'm rambling.
Sorry.
In short I just wanted to have somewhere to talk about books and writing when I'm not actually writing. My authors of choice: Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, Hunter S. Thompson, Nick Hornby, and a bit Of Stephen King (my gateway author). I like drinking; I drink. I'm supposed to be getting married soon but I just need to get this book finished beforehand because I really can't take my mind of it and I don't want to be saying 'The end' instead of 'I do'.
This'll do anyway. As you might have noticed, I have a knack for ze waffle. See you on the boards.

Hey, I'm new here and I joined just for the fun of writing! :D (Should there be any other reason to join a place like this?!).
I'm not a terribly amazing writer because I was never influenced by when I was young, my mums side of the family are all amazing at art, each better at a different thing, so I just kind of fell into place with that and didn't care much for English or any other subject than art whilst I was in school (which makes me sad now when I think back). But even without putting all of my effort in I was still average or above in my studies. Anyway, when I did my A levels in 6th form I was just drawn to English Language and Literature and I fell in love instantly. I think that the fact I grew up without writing as an active part of my life is why I now love it as much as I do.
Moving on, my goals that I hope to achieve from joining this site are to be inspired to write, post my work and receive as much feedback as possible so that I can grow into a better writer :)
Thanks guys! :D

Hey Everyone-- I'm an American high schooler. I don't watch a lot of TV, but I do enjoy sitting down to an occasional thriller. I spend a lot of time reading and writing, as well as practicing music.
When it comes to listening music-- i'm really into soundtracks. Batman, Alice in Wonderland, Last of the Mohicans...(*sigh*). Rock-- not so much, only when I'm in the right mood;)
I'm obsessed with classics. I'm in the middle of Plato's Republic right now....fun stuff...
peace out y'all;)

Hello there all. I'm 2ndSerpentarius because someone always gets the First Serpentarius, so I have to settle for being the Second Serpentarius. Oh well.
I haven't read a good book in a loooong time. I pretty much stopped reading books when I became a teenager and started playing video games/watching television/posting on the internet nonstop. It's too bad too since I used to love reading books when I was young. But various media I've recently encountered have convinced me to resume reading books again. I wasn't sure what books I'd like to start reading so I registered here specifically for recommendations and I shall post a formal request very soon. Thank you very much.

Well ... to findout if I have this system right ... G'day to all who might read and reflect here and if -- as I am -- you are possibly interested in some discussions from time to time about selected aspects of writing fiction -- as I was upon discovering this site -- searching as I was ... insights into Nabokov and his novel "Lolita" ... then (flow of conscious just now) we might well stimulate each and others thinking from time to time, even create a small community of kindred souls from places everywhere. Thus, this Aussie girl (a little bit published) would love to hear from you. Cheers....

Just wanted to introduce myself to everyone.
I am a British woman currently living in Nova Scotia with my Husband. I Have two children and two stepchildren the eldest of which is 21 and the youngest is 16.
I have written poetry for myself since i was a child, but I have never had anything published, I have never been a member of any forums before so I am a complete newcomer to all of this.
Having been a cook for many years in a family run pub in the U.K. I now find myself at a loose end, not yet having a job here in N.S.
My favourite book of all time is George Orwell's 1984, I first read this book when I was in school and got completely sucked into it's dark oppressive world. I could smell the dust covered objects and feel the faded peeling wallpaper in Winston and Juliette's secret room.
I recently read Jean Paul satre's Nausea, it had a similar effect on me, I felt as if I were there sitting in the cafe with Antoine, seeing it through his eyes.
I do like various other authors too, from Ian M. Banks, Clive Barker and James Herbert to Shakespear, shelley and H.G.Wells . Anyway, Thats a bit about me.I am looking forward to being a part of this community and making my very first post.
I think that this can be as simple or complicated as we each make it to be as is life. I would love to hear why you read literature and why you feel others should too.

Okay It is my turn. Hahaha.I just joined and I think I am ready to give a quick introduction of myself. It is very tough for me. I think I am very hard to understand.I do not like something for always. Even my music teacher thinks so too. Lol. I am doing my Master degree in English Literature and also doing degree course in Japanese language. I like Japanese "anime" and that is for ever. I wonder why this never changes? I like to walk in open lonely roads in a sunny day of winter. I like Roses especially the white one. And hmmm...... I like to read books and I write short stories when I am free. I am always late to catch the bus when going to classes. My friend hate me for that and I get usually scolded for that too from her. But I never learn. I have very few friends and I have one and only best friend called Risa. Ok and I like to draw too{nothing special}.I like the line "To be or not to be" from Hamlet. God knows why? That is all from me. Hope I did not bore anyone and made him or her to fell in sleep in the desk.

Hello All,
I am a lover of language, words, and literature. But I joined The Literature Network because I was trying to get some opinions to help me in deciding how to reduce the number of books in my collection. I've been lugging around a huge library of very large and old books for what seems to be a few centuries from country to country. These books are falling apart now with age. I have to get rid of at least one of my Complete Works of Chaucer, Complete Works of Shakespeare, etc. The problem is - which one(s). So I thought those more up on the latest research in the field could advise me.
I live in a very humid environment without such niceties as air conditioning or dehumidifiers. There are many critters here that eat books. I can't protect them any more. I live on a small pension in a rain forest in Costa Rica.
I hate just throwing books away. It feels criminal. But nobody wants old books in less than good condition and especially here, nobody seems to want old books in English. Any suggestions? There are no local public libraries. :confused5:

Books which have been our long-time companions would certainly have imparted to us what they want to tell to this world and posterity. It is good to record the noteworthy things in them in good uniform-sized diaries, especially beautiful passages, burning sentences, immortal utterances, memorable remarks, etc, so that some one from the coming generation who accidentally stumbles upon our diaries would be tempted to read those books in original. That is what we can do to those immortal creations. No one will ever again go through those thumbed up volumes. So go ahead and burn them, give them a decent burial after preserving their real content. And keep the gems with you, which can be easily read while lying cozily. Feel relaxed to bear less burden. Always remember to buy standard size, light weight paperbacks in future. I carry this out often.

By reading a book, we get the experience of a writer who has gone through a full life. When we have gone through a hundred books, we have actually gone through the experiences of a hundred lives, which we otherwise can not do in our short life span. That is how reading books makes us wise and that is why literature is important.

I'm a lover of literature. Often its about Buddhism, learning as the Dalai Lama said to "be happy." I am taking a course now: "Awakening Joy," which is all about inclining your mind to a state of well-being, joy, happiness or whatever you want to call that great feeling of love and joy that comes over you when you are gazing at the water while sitting on the beach, walking with you dog down a quiet street in winter, streching into downward facing dog and balancing in tree pose, enjoying a bowl of sweet potato soup by the fire with family, and in sum, enjoying the richness life offers if we are present enough to experience it that way and remember that feeling.

My name is Alisson and I joined this forum because I would love to get some critics on my writing since my family and friends do not care whatsoever about poetry, which makes them the least supportive or helpful critics. I would accept bad and good critics as long as they're honest and constructive because I am here looking to improve and become better. Also, I want to come in touch with more people that can actually see the real beauty behind writing and its importance not only for the individual's sanity but also for the soul, mind and heart itself.
Hope you have a wonderful evening.

I am Saeran. I am not much for talking about myself so I will keep this short. I am a teacher and my favorite age of students are 10 and 11 year old children. My favorite subjects to teach are science and writing. I personally love to read, write and draw. I have only begun writing in the past two years and it consumes me once I start a story. I am excited about meeting others here, reading their stories and getting feedback on mine.

Hey guys! I'm in high school and am just beginning to realize how much I adore literature. I decided to come here to talk to people with that same passion. I'm looking forward to some awesome conversations.
I like everything from Dune to Death of a Salesman, Life of Pi to Machiavelli in Hell, Ten Days that Shook the World to Antigone. I love to play the saxophone, and my musical tastes range from Coldplay to Coltrane to Train to Mumford and Sons to the Decemberists. To name a few. I also enjoy Role-Playing Games, whether on the computer or with pencil and paper. I have yet to find a subject I've learned in school that I dislike.
Things I DO dislike: the perpetuation of ignorance, cruelty, stubbornness.
So that's me. As best as I can get it.

Hello, My name is Shila (Shy La) and I am in my mid 30's, single and living in Texas. I enjoy reading almost everything! However my reason for joining this forum was to get some help looking for a book. I have no idea what the name of the book is. Its been over 15 years since i read it and for some reason i have been wanting to re-read it lately. There is a whole store there but that is another post. By lately i mean for at least a couple of years now i have been searching. Because I cant remember the name or the author of the book, it has been a struggle. I am hoping that this is the place where I may get a clue! :)
I look forward to meeting new personalities while i am here.

I am new and just thought I would introduce myself. I love all kinds of literature and am so glad I came by this site a few months ago.
Well, as if you could not tell my favorite book is Jane Eyre. Though I love many authors such as Dickens, Austen and Irving to me Charlotte Bronte really captured it all in Jane Eyre. It has mystery, romance, a bit of adventure and a gothic atmosphere all rolled into one.
I was a nanny and teacher for a number of years but for now I am a stay at home mom until I go back to work soon. I would love to be a writer though I fear I don't have the talent for it, so for now I stick to reading every chance I get.
I look forward to browsing the forums and if you would like to know a little more about me you can check out my profile and I also have a myspace page.
Have a happy day!:seeya:

I thought I would jump on as I have recently been consuming all things Shakespeare after an inspirational trip to Stratford Uopn Avon for my second wedding anniversary.
Literature was never something I cared about in school as it was taught with no passion or enthusiasm and so it felt like another one of those "never gonna use it subjects" but now after many wasted years my eyes are opening to the wonders of language.
Hopefully I will enjoy being here but be warned I am barely educated to GCSE level so if my foot lands in my mouth go easy on me.

I have, according to some people, the most boring hobbies on the planet, embroidery and making beaded jewelry.

My sister took English and American literature at uni and always asked my opinions on what ever she was Reading, which iswhat first made me interested in poetry. I also love design and am taking graphics and classics at school. I'm a tomboy, I don't do the whole makeup and hair fiasco bu am more the agony aunt of the friend group. Hello everyone! I am from India and have been a member for a few months now, but what with work and other interruptions, haven't had the chance to post anything yet.
I am huge fan of PG Wodehouse and spy / detective fiction. Am currently on a classics-reading spree (if you can call half a dozen books a year a "spree"!) Well, I have been a voracious reader through school and college, but haven't had much time since I've started working.
My reading goal for this year is to complete at least 24 books (12 fiction and 12 non-fiction) from the hundreds of unread books I new own.
I hope that the Literature Network will provide just the right motivation for me to achieve this goal! Hope to have some interesting discussions here!
Cheers,
Brouhoho.

Hello!
I live in Mexico City. Although English is not my mother's tongue, I read books in this language.
As for Turgenev, do yourself a favor, drop whatever you are doing now (drop her on the matress) and buy "The Essential Turgenev", by Elizabeth Cheresh Allen. You will find "The Diary of a Superfluous Man", "A Nest of Gentry", "Rudin", "First Love" and, of course, "Fathers and Sons", plus an excellent introduction. Publisher is Northwester University Press.

Hello everyone,
I just registered today and I cannot wait to get involved with this forum. I am a student studying English Education and I have a passion for literature. My favorite author is Hemingway even though I have many other favorite authors. I absolutely love American Literature from the 20th century and I am also falling in love with British Literature. I don't have a favorite time period with British Literature because I love it all like Beowulf, Chaucer, Shakespeare, etc.
Some of my hobbies consist of reading, writing, studying, and working with children :)

Hi all, I'm so fresh in the house,& hope to contribute meaningfully as well as benefit bountifully. Love you all!
I just signed up, after finding this forum online, while searching for interesting sites that are discussing and sharing opinions about literature.
My name is Tina and I am German, though I read classics like Austen, Dickens etc. in English, since I prefer the original version.
I've been always a book worm, starting already when I could barely read a book by myself. I had the luck that even without having much money at home, we always had alot of books. Later I was a very regular visitor to all public libraries that I could reach with my bicycle. Now in my mid-thirties, I think my love for books can be considered hopeless. ;o)
I am looking forward, to read about your opinions and every now and then throwing in my own 2 cents.
Regards,
Tina

Hello :) I'm a third Language & Lit student. Love discussing books. Um, favourite author is a hard one, it depends what book I'm involved in at the time! I guess an all time favourite is Terry Pratchett as far as authors go, he never fails to entertain. My favourite book, is White Oleander by Janet Fitch, I adore the petry and emotion in that novel. But it's hard to say that's what defines my interests, because I honestly will read anything and enjoy a wide spectrum of authors, topics, writing styles etc. I'm South African, and after these last two years of studying I'm amazed at the home grown talent, I can only hope to follow in their footsteps some day. Not really sure what else to say, besides the fact that I am most certainly not on this forum to get anybody to do my "homework" for me. I'm a correspondence student, so my success depends entirely on my own skill and motivation, so no sneaky shortcuts for me. But I would love to get some perspectives on the books I'm doing, it's the only downside to correspondence, very little interaction. Anyway, that's me in a very thin nutshell :)

Ahoy!
I halted my search for a quality literary forum some time ago and stumbled upon this just recently! Essentially I'm just gawking for some ersatz interaction regarding special literary topics that happen to be outside the realm of my friends and peers. I've simply come to soak up the collective enlightenment and dig on some wordiness and opinions from what appears to be an active and erudite bunch.
Bon Voyage!

Greetings from the middle of...nowhere.
Some call it Missouri, I've got other, rather subjective terms for my isolated location at the time being.
Regardless, I'm over here because I enjoy writing, but do you know how hard it is to get someone to read your stuff?
I.E. You have something to write about, you had a nightmare, but it'd be a brilliant short story. So, you write it, but your friends/family read it and are upset that you have such negative thoughts inside your mind...or at least subconcious [by the way, my spelling is dead awful].
I.E. You have a brilliant, romantic, realistic dream. You've got to write about it, don't use names, but know it'd be smashing on paper. You have your significant other read it; they look at you, thinking they were the one in the dream [naturally you're terrified to tell them that it wasn't...].
Those kind of situations are what bring me to the table. I'm not a profound writer, professional poet, or linguistic legend.
I just want to feedback from other people.

I am a teacher, a reader, a writer. I get the sense that I am much, much older than the rest of you. I am 69, and retired from a career much of which was teaching literature at the post-secondary (university) level. Of course I love to read. I miss teaching.
Although I love to read good light stuff, what I know is classic literature in English, French, and Latin.
I write friction, essays, and some poetry. I live in the country and do some light farming.
If I can be of help to any of the younger folks here--and that's what I've done all my adult life--please let me know.

Hi, I’m Rianti. I’m supposed to be graduated from university this semester but unfortunately I’m not. I got stuck in my thesis proposal and it was rejected once. Now, I’m trying hard to make it (again). I am Indonesian and certainly English is not my first language. But, I was always interested to learn English language. It is the reason that now I am an undergraduate student majoring in English Literature. I hope I can improve better understanding in literary works by joining this forum and the most important one is to get my undergraduate degree as soon as possible. Of course, I would like to say many thanks to everyone here for sharing their ideas and thoughts. It means a lot. Thank you. I think that’s all for my introduction. Hope u don’t mind with my ‘beautiful’ English. =)

Was seeking information regarding what constitutes good writing when I came across this site. I wanted to send information to a friend who questioned what is considered good writing, and he felt no one should judge. Of course if we don't make judgements, then we would have trouble deciding what or who to spend our time with. I love what I consider literary fiction, and have eclectic taste, and have few friends who share my reading interests. One guide for me is reading book jackets, and any recommendation by authors that I already admire is a good heads up, although no guarantee. I seldom like best sellers. I listen to public radio, and Selected Shorts is valuable to me, and gives me a heads up on authors. Ditto on such collections as The Best American Short Stories and O'Henry Awards, Grant, Ploughshare, and The New Yorker. Some short-story writers have written good novels. I can't think of any author that is consistently excellent. A few authors I enjoy reading every few years. I'm going to assemble a list of my favorite books and authors and post here later. I also love The New Yorker's Fiction Podcast, with discussions before and after the readings. I'm in my late 60s and have been an avid reader since age 10, and of course tastes and interests change over the years. Although I've mostly talked here about short stories, a taste I developed in childhood when good fiction was published in popular magazines, I relish getting absorbed in a good novel, and am hungry for one right now and starting to panic that I haven't come across anything interesting lately. The most recent was "The Wrestling Season" by Sharon Shehee Stark.

Hi, I must admit that this is the first forum that I have ever joined. Well, I guess to introduce myself . . . I am a recently minted Ph.D. now teaching in a small community college in the MidWest. For my doctorate, I focused on early modern literature and feminist theory. My love for the Renaissance started back during my first survey of renaissance literature course when I was an undergrad. The professor was amazing, taking a new historist approach by interweaving the social and cultural upheaval of the period with literature that came out of it. For me, it was never that I really enjoyed the aesthetic experience of reading literature. Rather I loved the complexity and subtly of the poetry, prose, and plays of the English Renaissance. Anyway, I spent my doctoral studies exmaining the writing of Francis Bacon, hence my handle, and rejection of the new science by John Donne, Andrew Marvell, John Wilmot. To make a long story short, I moved from the East coast, started teaching, and have a book coming out with Palgrave MacMillan based on my dissertation.
With a work that I just devoted nearly five years of my life over with now, I am bit lost, trying to find a new direction and possibly a new writing project. Lately, I have been reading postmodern criticism of science and some random modern fiction. I just finished reading Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco - the Da Vinci Code for intelligent people.
My partner, who is incredibly active on another forum, suggest I get an "Internet life." So here I am. Can't wait to join in on the fun.

This happens to be one of the first forums I have ever joined and am willing to participate in. As the clichéd greeting goes, "Hi".
To someone who is very interested in literature, I myself am very ignorant with it. Not that I don't want to read, but I am just living in a world where dwelling in the company of books is not a very good option. I still need to deal with a lot of things-- especially keeping my mind productive, putting my mind at work, and learning to make money using my skills (since I feel clumsy when dealing with businesses and resources). But books have been in my company ever since I was a child, only that I am reluctant with embracing popular, classical, and canonical texts.
I am a Language and Literature major, undergraduate, and well, I am very weird. Weird not because I am eccentric or that I prefer unique things, but once again, it is because I am... just different. I don't easily embrace things, trust issues probably. My mind may not be as wacky and creative as most people are, but I am full of practical knowledge and insights that has proven useful in my survival.
The world outside is not a very warm place for minds like us to flourish. I may have not much of a social life, but the very important thing is that I still have not lost the knack for interacting with people. That skill, after all, is essential.
I am not a trivia-minded person, but I sure like insights and ideas. Hope that will help in this "discursive space"

Just discovered this forum today. I recently finished The Metamorphosis and wanted to know what other people thought of the novel, Googled it, and a response from this forum came up. Sounds like my kind of place. I'm currently reading A Tale of Two Cities and The Outline of History. I've always been an avid reader, but this year I've started reading a lot of the classics: 1984, War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, Common Sense, Anthem and The Fountainhead. Still, I have always been drawn to the works of Dean Koontz and Stephen King.
I'm 32, married, and a recent graduate of UCF with a Master's in Public Administration who works at a nonprofit. I love reading and video gaming.

I like to keep in touch with young minds and join in discussions of controversial topics, and I’m doing a short course on English Literature so that’s what I’m doing in this forum.
I think a forum like this is a good place to talk about things honestly, without having to regurgitate the opinions of your senior lecturer or spout what all the guides and notes say about something. If you can’t take Chaucer at any price you should be able to say so, though you should be at least prepared to listen to somebody who thinks C. is the bee’s knees.
(Why is it that everyone I’ve met who hated Chaucer was a female?)
I’ll never forget the time long ago when I wrote a poem and the head of the English department analysed it in front of a huge room full of students. He read things into it that I wouldn’t have dreamed of, but of course I wasn’t about to embarrass the bloke –and risk getting lower grades! So, when asked about an interpretation I tended to nod weakly in assent. Tell me there are other devout cowards out there.
At the moment I’m reading "Tom Jones" and finding Henry Fielding a lot funnier that I’d realised.
Until next time, hooroo from Oz.

Nobody I know reads like I do. My sister haas a phd and reads James Patterson!? Geez! i am planning to start Infinite Jest by David Stewart Wallawe this week (waiting on Amazon), anybody read it? Any thoughts? The reviews are sort of confusing. It appears to ba a book that is hard to read but you just can't stop reading it. Sounds like my kind of thing.
Pardon my typos! How Freudian.

Hello! I just joined this forum yesterday in search of some interesting discussion as a book-lover and as a college sophomore majoring in English. I'm 19 years old and I live in Florida. :)
Well, I love pretty much all genres of literature and film, but I am extremely picky about what I read (I have high standards). It's a little disappointing to me that we can't discuss politics and other topics that could be interesting because it might "offend" someone else. I don't believe in censorship, especially if what you have to say is important and contributes to intellectual discussion. Always question authority, as well as the people around you. It's not as if everything in politics is completely vulgar. xD
Anyway, I'm still looking forward to being a part of this great forum, and getting better grades as well! Have a nice day.
