Hello everyone. This is my first post. I'm not generally a "forum person" but after watching the movie The Jane Austen Book Club, I decided it might be fun to have some people to discuss books (among other things) with. Sorry for ending that sentence with a preposition - I know there must be some English teachers lurking around here who just are vehemently furrowing their brows right about now. The movie wasn't that great and I'm not a Jane Austen zealot but I do love to read and I am a bit of a bibliophile (yes, I obsess over the actual books themselves, not just the content) so I figured - why not join a literature forum?

P.S. I'm moving to New York City in about a month and I can't wait to start making my way through the countless number of second-hand bookshops there. Anyone from NYC have any recommendations on where to go?

Hi! I am a new member and am so happy to have finally joined the literature network! After my senior year of high school, I am planning on going on to college to become an English teacher. I LOVE literature.

Since this is a literature website and since it was asked, I will tell some of my favorite authors, though it is so hard to choose a few. I love John Steinbeck, Sinclair Lewis, Herman Melville, basically any early twentieth or late eighteenth century American author. I also have read some of Charles Dickens and Daniel Defoe and really enjoyed them. I must admit, I am not as well read as I hope to be, but I am getting there.

If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear from you! Thanks!

Sarida :)

Hi everyone,

I, too, am new to this whole liturature/thread thing. I was an English major in college and now that I'm not in school, I miss all the conversations on literature. I'm finally getting back to one of my first loves: reading and writing. I wanted to be an author when I was in second grade and I still do, but I need to find focus and not be afraid to get out there with my writing. ,

Right now I'm enjoying social comedies like E.M. Forster's A Room with a View and Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I'm looking forward to having some good chats about all sorts of books. :)

46 going on 86 (health issues).........married (more than once --- sigh)....... mother to six kids, 3 of whom we adopted 2 years ago..... "used to be" a lot of things I ain't any more (Christian, lawyer, philosophy grad student, optimist, pessimist) but still one thing I've been forever: an addict of the printed page. Love great lit but will settle for the back of a cereal box if necessary.

Hi everyone. So this isn't actually my first post, at least not tonight, but I thought I'd come by to say hi. I originally joined to use the site in conjunction with my class. We use it for class discussion on books, but I really love literature so I'm glad I joined. Can't wait to post some more about great literature.

Hi -- I'm a newbie. There, I said it. Now that that's out of the way, I just discovered the forum and I'm excited to find a place to talk with others of similar interests. My Bachelor of Arts degree is in English Lit, and my favorite period was the Romantic. Big fan of Byron, also Shelly & Keats, as well as Mary Shelly, who wrote 'Frankenstein' after a nigh of ghost stories. The original purpose of the story was a meditation on what it is to be human, but it makes a very good scary story, as well.
About me. I have been around a lot. Born in North Carolina, I was raised in Houton, Texas, and consider myself a Texan. Military at seventeen, stationed at the big US Navy Submarine Base, New London, Connecticut, then with the US Air Force in France, Italy, the Florida panhandle, Washington state and finally, Vietnam. My military job was photojournalist, so my experience in Vietnam was quite different from most. I was good at what I did, and after a few months, my boss knew I had no fear of going out to tricky places and situations to find and develop a story, so he let me operate pretty much on my own. I got into some very nasty situations, but I always knew I could get out on the next helicopter, which gave me more bravery than was smart. After eighteen months, tho, I didn't even get a hangnail. It's all a matter of luck, and mine has always been good. Although I was enlisted, everybody wanted to be friends with the newspaper guy, in hopes of getting their name in the paper. I did a lot of flying (right seat, for those of you who know) and wore a flight suit with no rank insignia but my air crew member wings, and was usually entertained in the Officer's Club with the pilots I flew with.
After the military, I began college right away, finishing my BA in English in three years, then spending another semester to convert a minor in Art to a major, and finished a BFA at three and a half years, total. My art specialty was photography, and in my first semester of taking a photography class, when my professor found I was the only one who knew how to use the darkroom equipment, he left the class to me, and I taught it for a year as a teaching assistant. That was my senior year. In my junior year, i was a teaching assistant in what we called Dumbell English, a class for those who were accepted to the University, but pretty much lacked the ability to write a simple, declarative sentence in English, or, presumably, in any other language, as well.
Graduating, I tried to find a job in Journalism, but was completely unable to, despite my experience. I drifted around for a while, even worked in a convenience store, midnight shift, in Key West. Three years out of college, though, I got a good job with a major corporation, Dun & Bradstreet. I'm sure most of you have never heard of them and that's fine, but they are a Fortune 200 company. After a year with them, I was selected as a Management Candidate, and after two years altogether, was promoted to District Manager in Minnepolis, Minnesota. Eighteen months there, and I was transferred to Los Angeles, California. I met and married my wife in Minnesota, and we lived in LA for the next sixteen years. She began doing well with her company, and we were transferred to New Jersey for three years, Norfolk, Virginia (about my favorite place to live) for only one year, Hartford, Connecticut for seven l o n g years, and since April, we have lived in Phoenix, Arizona.
Well, I love to fly, although i have never taken lessons or gotten a license, many of the pilots I flew with in the service gave me tips, and let me fly the aircraft on my own for a while. I have been taught to do aerobatics (trick flying) in some of what were then the hottest aircraft in the world.
I still love photography, altho with the digital age, everything is different. Well, the basics of framing a picture and what makes a good one are the same, but the process is totally different, and it doesn't matter that I know how to use the darkroom now. I can't yet afford Photoshop, so I'm kinda stuck. I have figured a work-around, but I won't go into all that here.
I guess that's it. On a personal note, I have been married to my lovely wife for 28 years tomorrow, and this was the best of three marriages I've had. I'm anxious to make friends and correspond with whomever might be interested. Back to literature for a moment, in modern stuff I love Steven King. I was entrhralled for years by his 'Gunslinger' series, and also Gore Vidal. Currently on my nightstand are 'The Portable Faulkner,' a Penguin Classics collection of his works, 'The best Poems of the English Language,' which I dip into for one or two whenever the mood hits me, 'Salt, A World History,' about a spice which I overuse, and I find it fascinating. Deep breath. "Lady MacBeth,' a fictional history of the woman at the evil heart of one of Shakespeare's finest (well, weren't they all?), 'Into Thick Air' an account of a man who bicycled to the lowest point on six continents. That's Death Valley in the US at 282 feet below sea level, and the shore of the Dead Sea in the Middle East, at l,350 feet below, the lowest place on earth. I am ashamed to admit it, but I am not sure what country that's in, and I haven't gotten to that section in the book yet to learn. Last but not least, 'The Cactus Eaters,' an account of a couple who hiked the Pacific Coast Trail from Mexico to Canada. I am reading all of these, and pick one as the spirit strikes me.
That's it. Now you can say you know me.

But wait, there's more . . .

Reply to cute little car. As to your concern over sentences ending with prepositions, Winsoton Churchill was called on that in a news conference during the war. He quickly reponded that he "didn't care for criticism on that level, that it was the sort of thing up with which he would not put." Good come back, huh? To the best of my knowledge, he didn't copyright that phrase, so be sure to use it to any critics you might encounter.
Bye.

Thanks, Symphony

From looking around on this page, I see I need a better user name and a much better avatar. Work, work . . .
To be continued . . .

Hey there! I'm Ryan and this would be my first post on what seems to be a beautifully-made forum about a thing I love; literature. Thus, the name, right. Well anyway, I love to write and I kind of like to read.(only on a good day) I'm a big Vonnegut fan. I like his style and his books are hilariously demented. So, let's clap it up for KV. See you guys on my next post.

Greetings my new anonymous online community. Thank you for the warm welcome. I stumbled upon this site while doing a bit of informal research for a unit I am teaching later in the year. This is my third year teaching seventh grade English at an early college secondary school in Flushing, Queens, NY. We have a partnership with Queens College, a city university located in the community. Our goal is to give students who normally wouldn't attend college the opportunity to succeed in academia. By the time my students graduate twelfth grade, they will have had the potential to earn 60 college credits. We look to take struggling students, special education students, the first generation that speaks English in their family, and accelerate them so that they take their first college course in ninth grade. We are currently in our fourth year of existence, so the school is sixth grade through ninth; we add a grade each year. I write all my own curriculum and have almost full autonomy in my classroom.

The internet is a great idea for seed ideas. After coming across a lesson on the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame's website comparing Robert Frost's poem "Mending Wall" and Pink Floyd's The Wall, I developed that unit to include a number of original ideas. The last addition was Jean-Paul Sartre's short story, "The Wall". Now that I will be teaching the unit for a third time, I want to continue to expand the unit. This is where I take this post to another thread because I need some suggestions.

Take it slow,
Barry

Hi!

I'm new, reaching here from reading first SF, then more general reading after discovering Women's Press at a book sale. My favorite writers so far include P K Dick, Disch, le Guin, Russ, Maltzberg, Piercy, Dreher, Atwood, Winton, Amos and Firth.

The last two don't write books, as far as I know; Tori Amos makes music and David Firth makes Flash animations. Both are great sources of intricately-crafted original content, which to me is what "literature" is all about :-)

Most of what I read, was written since the 1950s... it's seldom I've read older works by choice; exceptions have been Olive Shriener and Virginia Woolf.

My name is hbrent. I have a Ph.D. in medieval drama, but that is not the point. The point is that all of a sudden in life I have grandchildren, and I am trying to help their parents and teachers get them to read. As part of that project, I am reading some of the books I intend send to them. Early this mornining, suffering from early-onset geriatric insomnia, I awoke at 4 am to finish Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth. The book is a little advanced for my grandson, who is just starting fourth grade, but I look forward to his reading it in about two years. I am now off to find a copy of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Welcome to the Forum, HBrent! :)

I have been reading some children's books recently too and am rather enjoying revisiting all these old favorites.

I think Verne's books might be suitable for early teens.

My nephews and I are trying to follow this list: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2008/01/19/bokidsbooks119.xml

We made a deal that they should complete the list by the time they are 15 (will give them book vouchers if they do). It is rather good and ideal that the list is divided into 3 stages.

Welcome, HBrent. My niece enjoyed Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books, as I did when I was her age. Some of my friends had all the Borrowers books by Mary Norton, and I longed to read them, but didn't get around to it until I was in my 40's. I still enjoyed them! They're about a family of miniature people who live in the spaces under the floorboards of an old house and improvise their needs from bits and pieces that they "borrow" from the normal-sized family who lives in the house.

I'm sure you would love Suzanne Collins' novels.

Hello everyone! My name is Lynn and I'm so happy to have found a online book discussion forum. I have recently graduated in May with my Bachelor's in Secondary Education English. One of the thing I have missed about school is hearing everyone's input on novels I was reading. I love to hear outside perspectives. Although I typically shy away from being an active member of online communities, I'm hoping to find this one pleasing and addictive enough that I will not follow my usual pattern.

I have always enjoyed reading as far back as I can really remember. My addiction began with the Babysitter's Club way back when. I'm currently in the middle of reading Dracula.

Thanks for reading! I know introductions can sometimes be boring and forced.

Pay attention to time is a key element and there are several clues. Important because he ran out of time at the end. The novel spam of time is about three month but it is implicated.
Key elements: beauty, betrayal, ambition, power, Success

I love Carlos Fuentes he presents economic and political problems in a real way. Artemio Cruz is an influential mexican business man. He has made money and he is a powerful figure. In the book, this powerful man is weak and dying. Through, his sickness, he starts looking at his life in retrospect.

Fuentes is unique in his style, sometimes confusing, but he is always deep.In my opinion compared to Carlos some latin writers seems childish or immature.
I like the presence of humbleness and directness in his writing. http://www.online-literature.com/forums/images/smilies/kaioken.gif

Hi,

I am very interested in literature and was curious about any thoughts on Virginia Woolf. When she wrote Mrs. Dalloway do you think she was also implying that she was unsure of her own sexual identity? I would appear that her mind was somewhat androgynous. Furthermore, could you actually say she had the courage to be herself after such a traumatic childhood and tried to relate the inner unhappiness she had felt her entire life not only in just Mrs. Dalloway but in her other writings?

Having attained the personal chronology of three score and ten years, and having no further use of my perfectly good--though slightly worn--birthday, I am most interested in giving my birthday to my grandson, who has the misfortune to be born on November 11, much too close to Christmas.

I would like to use Sam Clemens' letter in which he bequeaths his birthday to a child, but cannot recall the exact words and can't find the reference.

I think, and fondly hope, it's not that Altz thing.
Can anybody help?
Sincerely,
Sam Fox

My aunt is trying to trace back the family tree and see exactly how we are related to Joseph Korzeniowsi. She has come up against all sorts of misinformation as to the direct relationship between her father and Joseph Korzeniowski. Her father ( my grandfather ) was Carol Korzeniowski also from Poland.Does anyone know how to continue this research ?? She has been to the Boston Library and even went as far as to contact a few geneologists as to the connection. She was told as a girl growing up they were related but not really told how.Anyone have any advice as to how she can go about this ?? She has even sent away to Poland for info ,but she did not get any reply. She is very determined as to figure exactly how she and my father are related to Joseph Korzeniowski.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You !!

Hi! My name is Misty, I'm a 29 year old mom of three boys 4 and under!
I LOVE to read (when I get the time)
I was a volunteer at a stable before I got pregnant again...Love horseback riding and can't wait to do it some more.
I also draw a bit.
Right now, I am waiting to see if I've been accepted or not to the U of M (Michigan) I'm trying to get a masters in information science...My DREAM is to work with archives! (my husband thinks I'm nuts...but I think its thrilling)
I love history, I am a major fanatic...WWII...holocaust...are the big ones for me. Although it can never be understood, I still find myself trying to learn everything that I can hoping I can maybe make some sense out of it. (Impossible, I know)
Favorite books are anything by Jane Austen...I adore the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer (very austenish) and any Historical fiction :)
So, there ya have it!
Nice to meet you all!

Hello everyone.

I joined quite some time ago but this is my first post.

I'm reading Jane Eyre at the moment (for the first time) and thought I might come over here and see what the literary types have to say about it.

I've been slowly working my way through the classics and I'm looking forward to good discussion and ideas for further reading.

HI!!...what a great start!

i feel really small on here compared to everyone else. You all talk about having a degree in this and that and i havent even finished my English GCSE's!

I do love English, i admit it hasn't been one of my loves until recently. It shows how much a teacher can inspire you. I've developed a deep love for writing. I've enjoyed writing all my love, it's so relaxing and you can just express all your feelings in a poem or a story. Again i admit i'm not a massive fan of reading. However amazing Shakespeare my be, for me it is boring to read. God i bet you all hate me now. This is why am i here though. I'm hoping most people on here would help me love the language of English more and especially literature as i'm finding it so fasinating (i can't spell) i just want to learn more and more.

Now about me...I'm DANNY! i'm sixteen years old, i live in birmingham. I go to Smith's Wood Sports College. It's a nice place to go to but i'm not very sporty. I'm a muscian and i own two bands. I love my bands more than anything but at the moment there is nothing better than coming home from rehearsals and writing the next chapter of my story :D

I really don't know what to say so if there is anything more just ask :)

I like reading books that are original and provocative (favourite authors being Richard Yates, Raymond Carver, Ernest Hemingway and John Fante) and that is also the effect I strive to get when I write. I have just had a book published called The Wooden Tongue Speaks, which is a collection of short stories and poems.

Hi everyone. I'm new to The Literature Network. I'm a retiree from Ford Motor Company and live in a suburb of Detroit. I studied for a Master's Degree in English Lit at the Univ of Toronto. My grad student advisor was Prof Marshall McLuhan and I took a course in Blake from Northrop Frye. My master's thesis was the literary criticism of Ezra Pound (with whom I corresponded briefly while he was in St Eliz's Hosp in D.C. and I was in the Army, Korean War era--it was he who suggested the Univ/Toronto & McLuhan).
I left Toronto and took U.S. gov't test and was accepted and trained as an Air Traffic Controller in Detroit which I did for five years, then went to work at Ford Motor Company. retiring in 1997. I belong to a Great Books Discussion Group of eight people, and also to a Finnegans Wake Group of four people.
My thanks to anyone who reads this.

A tip, if you have a lengthy thing to say, type it up in NOTEBOOK (the one everyone's computer has) and COPY/PASTE it here. Works like a charm and no more frustration. If you try to post the PASTEd words and it has timed out, well, just log back in and PASTE anew, and its all good! Cheers ~~Kizzo

I'm down at present for several reasons which I don't think proper to discuss here. One of them has to be the fact, however, that my creative output fails to draw the aesthetic attention of people. I do a bit of painting, I write poetry from time to time, I compose music that's experimental mostly. I am student of literature. I don't look bad. I have few friends. But the ones that I do have are genuine. For a long time I thought I was depressed but one day while watching a white feather dance in the sunlight, I discovered that I'm not. I don't smoke. I don't drink. I love the company of open-minded people. I love the smell of old books. I am phlegmatic. I love the country and wish someday I will have a farmhouse. I believe in God and I hope He believes in me (I hope I'm not committing some Christian sin of self-assertion here; only God and I know what I mean, and He tells me He's cool with it!)
I love life.

Hello all! I am a U.S. citizen educated in history and the law. I earn my living as a lobbyist but my true loves are those elements composing the Western classical tradition. Although I would never dare to compare myself to a thinker such as Machiavelli twenty years in the trenches of democracy have led me to empathize greatly with him regarding the refuge of classical antiquity.

"When evening comes, I return home and go to my study. On the threshold I strip naked, taking off my muddy, sweaty workday clothes, and put on the robes of court and palace, and in this graver dress I enter the courts of the ancients and am welcomed by them, and there I taste the food that alone is mine, and for which I was born. And there I make bold to speak to them and ask the motives of their actions, and they, in their humanity reply to me. And for the space of four hours I forget the world, remember no vexation, fear poverty no more, tremble no more at death; I pass indeed into their world." ---Letter to Francesco Vettori

For the last few years I have chosen to spend much of my "real world" time (meaning "after work") in the company of those individuals who, for the most part, ennoble humankind with their ideas and writings rather than those for whom everything is reducible to "eat what you kill". That is not to say that I don't appreciate, and often delve into, the dark side; simply that I find the darker aspects of humanity about as filling as a diet coke. Call me pollyanish but that's how I cope! ;)

That being said, I look forward to meeting you all and making new friends.

A good day to you all

I kinda liked the idea of introducing myself in a forum, as the one flaw I see with the concept is the lack of personality.
Unfortunately, I am a man of few words and won't be able to ravish your minds with neither astonishing originality or flawless vocabulary as some of your fine members already might have done.
As a 89' model norwegian I have inherited both the negative and positive aspects that come with the egocentric norwegian culture, my mind is my own, fortunately.
I study psychology, history and pedagogy, and work part - time at a local bowling alley. I really like it there, my co - workers got this sedated group mentality which makes it hard to move at a quick pace, not saying that I am a laid back guy though, but I'd like to be.

I like to read, I really do.
The way some books create alternative routes, hidden paths, expressways, cozy highways, yeah, I'm tired of constant asfalt.
I won't bother to list authors because it won't tell you a thing, I will tell you though; I like books who make me feel good without concrete evidence, I like feeling confused, disoriented by questions who dig through the layers of my brain until a conclusion knocks me out.
One name hits me though, Haruki Murakami, I get lost in his works one after another without fully understanding why, they just eat me.
I don't really care if people read this or not, this is a type of venting after all, but if you do, and get this "my oh my, this guy just broke through to me" feeling I'll be expecting to hear from you.

Eirik evaluated, pleased to meet you

I am so BAD at sticking around this wonderful place, AAARRRRGGGHHH!!!

Teaching kind of sneaks up on you, ya know? You think you're ready for it, you lesson plan, you make materials, you make tests...and you think now that you've done all that you can relax and sit on the internet and chat it up on LitNet...but noooooo, little did you realize you spent ALL NIGHT doing that stuff and now it's time to iron your clothes and get your butt to school!

Anyways, Hurricane Omar just gave me a nice break from all that (everyone is fine, thank you for asking, it wasn't a bad storm, just enough to cancel school for a few days). I decided during this break to start writing a book of short stories I've always wanted to write, and I realized how much I missed LitNet when I started writing and couldn't stop thinking about the Short Story Contest.

So, I'm hoping that when school starts again on Monday, I'll at least be able to promise myelf that I will spend weekends on LitNet and writing my stories.

Forgive me for being gone for so long? Welcome me back with open arms? (*Clasps hands and closes eyes in prayer*)

Hopefully next year I'll be back in the UK studying English Lit. & Philosophy!
I love all kinds of literature - from American contemporary to Marlowe.
Some of my favourites:
The Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck
1984, Animal Farm, Homage to Catalonia - Orwell (legend!)
The Great Gatsby - Fitzgerald
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson (my idol - and the source of my username)

That'll do for now :)

Hello, everyone!

I'm a young-not-so-young man of the (or des) Brasilian Belles Lettres, graduated in Latin Language & Literature in Rio de Janeiro.

A little time ago, I found a very interesting forum in Portuguese, where one of the moderators mentioned this place. I missed depth in administration, in that forum, so, once I have good experience with forums in English, I decided to drop by, & see if I'll go better here ...

A little about myself, I write, but I don't live of writing, nor intend to. I also intend to learn music, about which I got one (strings), but have to practice and even learn some stronger basis. I like cinema, with some restrictions. In literature, I'm into the Romans, right now, or at least trying to.

Oh, and I simply love a certain toy. It's my main hobby ...

'Lived in Portugal, for a while, and visited London, when very young (13).

I'm from the '70s, maybe I should say.

Little more to say about me, let me know whatever you may be curious.

I'm glad to join,
& I hope I can add to the forum.

This is about it.

See you around,

Librarius qui, you make me feel so much better as I, too, posted a new thread to introduce myself and then couldn't delete it so I'll join your :crash: club!

I'm a real oldie who has lived in Australia for about 30 years and before that mostly England but also Cyprus. I've still got a lot to learn about computer techniques and look forward to dressing up my posting sites as soon as I get the hang of all those instructions., Most impressed by other people's pictures , quotes etc :)

I love reading fiction of all kinds, especially the classics, but I'm also a huge fan of good fantasy and some sci fi. My favourite author far and away is Shakespeare (and Hamlet my favourite play) but I couldn't possibly choose one favourite book there are so many I enjoy.

Very happy to be able to join in the Forum

I found this site when looking for opinions of House of Mirth. (I like it).
Something(s) about myself: Right now Im trying to find myself, I tend to argue theories using laws of nature with friends, I like music because of the former and books have always been there for me.

i stumbled upon this sight awhile back while researching, but did not join til this month.
literature is one of my many passions and i look forward to posting when i can. i enjoy deconstructing novels with others who can help me see things i would miss otherwise.
presently, i'm really bogged down with four major projects, including an aplit one, so i may not post much at first.

Will be feeling my way around.
I'm an American who resides in the U.K. (marriage) and am now writing full-time.
For the past year I've read nothing but crime fiction (was writing in that genre) and am over-dosed on it! Want to get my head around other kinds of fiction.

Hello, my name is James. I am a student of Web Design & Development at the University of the West of England.

I occasionally enjoy prose, but recently most of my reading time has been consumed by non-fiction textbooks relating to programming, web development and design principles.

I registered at this site because I am seeking information about the book Erewhon by Samuel Butler. If you have read this book, please send me a private message so that I may provide you with more information!

Thanks in advance,
James.

Hey everyone, it's the Cheshire Cat *evil laugh* Anyway, I'm a bit of a bookworm who somehow stumbled upon these forums, but I swear, even though I'm a nerd, I'm a cool nerd. :D When I'm not reading a good book (usually in bed), I like eating, cooking (albeit unsuccessfully), socializing, working out, arguing (in a friendly way), and all that jazz. And my favourite book? Catcher in the Rye ftw!

Well hopefully that intro sufficed. Look forward to meeting y'all! :)

Hi I'm Steve from Edinburgh. Need some help from out there. Read a book a number of years ago, can't remember name or writer.
Quick synopsis - Old aristocrat living on large estate and into maps and tunnels big time. Has a network of tunnels under his estate. Old man is losing the plot and on his way out. Travels to Edinburgh at one point and learns of treppanning (sorry for spelling - holes in head stuff). Ends with old man dying and something about his brothers death when he was born. Very funny but very dark and sad book. Please can someone help with this as it's driving me crazy

Great idea, Pensive!

As for me, I like music (and singing), reading (although I haven't been able to a lot lately), writing, and history. Particularly, I like musicals at the moment, and writing poetry. Most of the year, I play soccer, even though for a quarter of the year, it's snowing (or just really cold). I live on the East Coast, though it doesn't snow a whole lot here. We pretty much survive the winter on minimal snow days, if any at all, though last year we had about two and a half or three feet of snow fall. My favorite books range about as far as my music genres, which is about anything, as long as it's good. Right now, though, I'm in a "Good Omens"-mood, by Teri Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, which was a fantastic book.
I think I may have said this somewhere else on this forum, but I love languages. I'm taking Latin and Classical Greek this year in school and trying to learn a bit of Spanish and German on my own (though it's not going too well). When I finish with Latin, though, I'll be changing to the otherside of the Eurasian continent and maybe pick up some Korean (my grandmother is from Seoul).
I love photography, too. Some things, especially in every day life, can be so beautiful if you can catch them at the right moment. Speaking of which, there is a used roll of film sitting on my desk right now. Hmm, I should probably get it developed some time soon.
Anyway, that's me in a nut-shell in this moment. Can't wait to learn more about you guys out there!

Hello Everyone,:wave::wave::wave:

As I must return to another project, this is just a brief note to say that I am glad to be among you, and I am looking forward to many years of literature debates and other fun discussions.

My interests include working on my personal websites, writing movies and television reviews, commentaries, poetry, and fiction. I listen to a variety of music, and whenever I can, I attend a good movie, the opera, live classical music performances, and doing digital artwork for web use. The latter is an ongoing learning process that I devote a lot of time in developing it.

I love classical literature and artwork, and it has been said that to attract and hold my attention a man would have to be a writer and 500 or more years of age.

Sorry guys, but after some self-eval, I have come to believe there is much truth in this statement.
;)

Peace.

Ok, so I am bit annoyed because I accidently pressed a wrong button and deleted my lovely and engaging introduction.... so, here it is, less eloquent and shorter.

I am a young English teacher at a high school in VA. Went to IU, planning on getting my masters in literature from George Mason University.

Fav. authors: Kurt Vonnegut, David Sedaris, and 19th century literature (British).

I'm movie buff and enjoy going to concerts (followed Radiohead around the midwest this summer).

Not what I wanted to say exactly, but it will have to do for now. (disclaimer: my sarcasm does not often come through easily on the computer, but it's there).

Hello, my name is John, however as that name was taken I settled on the nom-de-plume Ashurbanipal. I have been on the internet for years and posting on something awful and 7 then 99chan's /lit/.
However, I have never actually joined a forum devoted entirely to the subject of literature; I have high hopes.
I teach English as a second language and have been traveling the world doing this for a few years now. After a short stint in India next month I shall return to Edinburgh and begin work on my Doctorate in English Literature.
I am a huge fan of Proust.

The Author
11-06-2008, 05:39 PM
To introduce myself... Hmmm. For a raging egoist this presents a problem. Whatever I say must be taken with a grain of salt (better yet a whole box). I am 64 years of age and hold multiple degrees; AACS, BSCS, MA(Theo.), BSME, BA (Lit), MA (lit), PhD Lit. I am, without a doubt, over qualified for any type of employment; that is why I am retired and living in Ghana. I grew up in America and served in the military (US Marines, US Army, US Army Reserve, Arizona National Guard). I am the author of the 'Gunny Harold' series of short stories, the short story and script for 'The Creature', and numerous other short stories and books. Most of which have made literature history for being the most unread stories in the world.
This is not a problem for me; I write for MY pleasure, not for the pleasure of some unknown reader. I have been told that my stories are entertaining, and sometimes enlightening. There is an old saying, 'Damned by faint praise.' Well, that, too, is OK with me. I love to read, and to write. I seek knowledge every day of my life.
My philosophy of life is very simplistic. It serves both as my philosophy and my religion: Live every day in such a way that you never intentionally hurt another human being. And when you do (we all make mistakes) try to make amends.
My favorite true story is about the ability to apply knowledge or experience or understanding or common sense and insight. It comes in the form of a converstation that I had with one of my theology/philosophy professors by the name of Brother Joseph. We had spent two hours of class discussion on the wisdom of some of the Greek philosophers; Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, and some others. At the end of the class I went up to Brother Joseph and asked, "Brother, it is easy to see the wisdom in the writings of someone long dead. They have been analyzed and poured over by thousands of philosophers and thinkers. But, Brother, how do I know a wise man when I meet one today?"
Brother Joseph was about sixty-five and had a very cherubic face. With the tonsure of the order, his smile made him seem beatific. He said, "I don't know."
I looked hard at him and then said, "Brother, with all that we have discussed surely you know what to look for in a man to determine if he has wisdom."
He smiled at me again and said, "I don't know."
I said, "Brother, is there anyone that can answer the question for me?"
He smiled again and said, "My boy, you are not listening." He paused and then said again - but this time very slowly, "I... don't... know..." He paused once more and smiled at the look of utter stupidity on my face (I still didn't get it) and then he explained. "The surest sign of a wise man is his willingness to say, 'I don't know.' You see, when he says that, someone teaches him, and he becomes wise."
I always feel it is better to say, "I don't know." And then listen to those who have the knowledge that I lack. Some day I hope that I can say that I am wise.

Hi I am Jake, an eighteen year old male. I feel eighteen years young. One hundred fifty seven thousand eight hundred seventy six hours treading water.
I don't like introductions. It's easier to just show up and stay awhile until it feels the same as where I was.
I don't know why I wrote this. Hey! everyone anyway I don't like being nice. But I think that it's truer to my nature, and hate is truer to my fear. :yawnb: this is wrong, all wrong. a person is like a cavity consistently being filled up; a writer is someone who finds the very act of living strange, as if he can't remove himself from the process; it requires constant analysis and re-evaluation. Ok. hi. see you on the field.

Ok, I know this is a bad introduction, and I think I just shot myself in the foot LOL. Anyways, I'd like to meet new people who are keen on discussing and analysing literary works :) I figure that literary discussions in this forum might help me in my studies as well :P

My name is Nathan, I'm 17, from the UK and in my last year of Sixth form, where I hope to end up in University next year. I'm aiming to study either History & Politics or History and English.
Currently, I take A2 English Literature, second year of my A-level English Literature course and I have to say, it really opened my eyes up to literature.

So far, I studied

Edward's Albee's 'Who's afraid of virginia woolf' - which i found a very interesting play
William Shakespeare 'King Lear' - A story of tragedy which has gave me a love for Shakespearian literature.
A selection of Ted Hughes Poems
and Oscar Wilde's 'Dorian Gray' - A very interesting novel once you get into it.

As of right now I'm studying, an assortment of World War 1 era poetry, (Wilfred Owen, Jessie Pope etc.)
Erich Remarque's 'All quiet on the western front' (A novel I'm strugging with, but I'm sure I'll crack it.)

As for personal reading, I'm in the middle of reading Bret Easton Ellis' 'American Psycho' and George Orwell's '1984'.

I guess thats mostly my literature related introduction.
Glad to become a part of this community.

Hello everybody! just a quick introdsuction from myself here, My name Is Daniel Campbell I am 22 and live in London.
Most of my life I had a poor attitude towards literature like the majority of my peers back then.
I borrowed Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas off my brother about 2 years ago and ever since then I havent stopped reading :)
I have read alot of the contempary classics, and thought I would join this site to see what people could recommend to me.
I am not sure exactly what sort of books I enjoy most, I end up finding an author I like and reading all their stuff which i think works for me.:P
I have read alot of George Orwell and Hunter S thompson and H.G Wells so far but am on the look out for new great writers, hence why I am writing this.
So if you have any books to recommend or just fancy a chat you can add me and go from there.
Thanks for reading- Dan Campbell.;)

Hello everyone. I'm a constant reader and book buying addict. I predominately read fiction and poetry. Right now I'm in the middle of House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, as well as Paris Spleen by Baudelaire. Hopefully this forum will be a conduit for much interesting and valuable discussion.

Hello everyone! I am currently an english student in university. I am really looking forward to joining the LitNet community as i find that most of my classmates have little love of poetry and fell bottom first into the major with little grace or purpose. It is nice to see literature love alive in so many. On page 362 of DH Lawrence's Sons and Lovers right now. Favorite poem is "In a Station at the Metro" by Pound.

Me= Shoesy.
Hi my fellow literary enthusiasts. Joined this site because I want to know some good books that I should read, and find out more about the depth of those which I have already read. I would also like to do better as far as my english texts at school go next year so I'll be adding some threads on those if there aren't already some up. Any help with these books would be excellent.

Thanks guys :)

The oldest in a large family, you'd think I would be outgoing, bossy, and social rather than the private individual I am. I'm a lit lover, been one my whole life. My idea of a good time is a quiet afternoon curled up with Austen or perhaps a captivating new read (but those are hard to come by--better to stick with Austen or Bronte or Faulkner), the telephone turned off and nobody around to interrupt or to need help with this or that. That's a rare day.

Very funny

Sorry Pensive.Im an msn fanatic.
Can anyone tell me why there is a reference to Hyperion & a satyr in Hamlet?
(act 1:scene 2) .....Hyperion to a Satyr, so loving to my mother .....?!
thnkz.
ps:That was hard on me pensive.Im soo used to shortenin:P

Hyperion is godlike...satyr is lustful. Hamlet is asking his mother why she would turn from someone like his deceased father, so superior, into the arms of his brother Claudius, a man Hamlet sees as base, corrupt, and very lustful. In fact, Hamlet seems more obsessed with his mother having sex with Claudius than he is with his father's mother. Notice how much more often Hamlet references incest and lust than he does the actual murder.

I am here today because I am an adult college student struggling with a composition class. To be honest I believe I will not pass. I am an "A" & "B" student but for some reason I get completely choked up when I have to write on certain topics. Right now my assignment is to write a literary analysis on Dylan Thomas' "A Child's Christmas in Wales". I have read this story many times and the only thing I get from it is that Thomas is reflecting on a childhood Christmas and intends to evoke similar memories for the reader. I, however, get stuck on the MANY descriptive words he uses. I do not intend to offend here, but for the life of me I cannot understand how this is a classic short story. Because of my confusion I am hoping to get some insight so I can write this paper.

Hello!

I found this forum while researching for a school project, but got sidetracked at the apparently good community herein.

Sooo... I introduce myself here as an avid science fiction fan who enjoys philosophy.

Recently, I've read the fountainhead, 1984, brave new world, and some other material that has got me thinking about the philosophical dichotomies between collectivism and other forms of human social interaction...

Hello...I'm Sally and I'm looking forward to being a member of your little community. I discovered poetry when my father gave me a book of poems that my late mother wrote in her 20's and I thought that I might "have a go":)

I belong to a local writing group and I am still feeling my way.;)

I'm with you, Sherry. I am also an adult student struggling at finish my writing degree. I have waited a long time to complete it, and for the life of me, I feel over my head in reading and research.:brickwall: Writing usually comes naturally, but now I must be conscious of grammar usage, work citations, and general thesis paper format.

I would be pulling out my hair if I did not keep it short.

Anyway, writing fiction is my passion. But for now, I must work with my professors to get this 57-year old brain of mine to thinking in academic terms of writing. Considering that this is my first semester in more than a decade of absent from campus life, I am hopefully that this transition will end painlessly and that I will have everything together come next semester.:)

Bye for now,

I am glad of this day discovery and this Forum seems to me very familiar even if is the first time that I come in; I hope to arrive to make myself understand, as long as I understand myself.:)

Hello everyone,
from the land of snow and eternal (?) winter. I found this site while googling on something and decided to give it a try, since it seems like an interesting community. Literature being a big part of my university studies and poetry my deepest passion I am looking forward to some lively literary discussions in here.
And yes, I do write poems and keep struggling to organize them into a book. Wish me luck...
(edit: one should never end with three dots)

Hello,

I've been reading on these forums for a few months and figured I might as well register and contribute something if possible.

I'm senior studying English literature at an American public university.

I'm interested in early 20th century American Lit. and Russian Lit.; I'm most familiar with the novel, but I'd like to branch out more in the future. Dostoyevsky, Faulkner, and Kafka are some of my favorite authors.

My laptop battery is about to die though so further introductions will have to wait -

glad to be here,

Hello people, you lively bunch...

I've been lurking here for QUITE a long time (a couple years, actually... and mostly the Personal Poetry section), but I've just now decided to get an account.

I'm kinda crazy and socially awkward, but I'm really a nice person. Promise :)
I enjoy meeting new people and discussing poetry and other forms of literature. So, on the off chance you have even the slightest urge, feel free to contact me!

Anyway, I've got homework. (Silas Marner, yay! Haha.)

Later.

Hi everyone!

I discovered this forum this afternoon, while I was having a break from my studying. I liked it immediately!
I am 23, I'm Italian and I study languages. Since I was 6 (beginning of the primary school) I fell in love for reading, writing and books in general. I was really obsessed with reading, I used to save my few money (when I was like 8 years old I didn't have much money, of course) to buy new books. I've been reading a lot for all my life, and I've read many different kinds of literature. I had to stop reading for some years at the University, but now I am writing my thesis, so I've more time for my own.
What else can I say? I think I said everything... but I can answer to your questions, if you have some :)
Hope my English is not too bad, I stopped doing it 5 years ago and in Italy they don't care that much about teaching languages well. '^__^

Hello,

Kate, here. I'm a middle-aged woman with teenage children. I stumbled across the Lit Network Forums while looking for info on a new translation of [U]Les Miserable[U]. This looks like a good forum, so I signed up, though I won't have much time to devote for a couple of months.

I love reading; it's the single greatest path for personal growth that I know of. I wish I'd had the opportunity to study literature in college, so I now supplement my reading of literature with web articles -- a do-it-yourself course of study.

I'm delighted to see so many young people on this forum -- the rumors of the death of books are greatly exaggerated!

I'm envious of those with skills in multiple languages. I didn't have the chance to learn a second language while growing up, and though I've spent some time trying to learn a couple of Romance languages, my at-home efforts haven't amounted to much. Sooner or later I run out of the time to keep learning and practicing.

Virgil, good to see you're still part of the community. I read your first posting to this thread and enjoyed it, then looked at the posting date and thought, gee, nobody's posted in years. You see, I'm used to forums that post most recent items first. But I caught on, and skipped over [I]many[I] pages to find the most recent, and as I said, was delighted to find you're still here.

Well, I'll pop in from time to time, and hope to contribute more when my currently hectic life slows down a bit. I'll look forward to having a chance to chat with you all.

Hello all :)

I discovered this forum this afternoon while taking a break (aka procastinating) from a paper I should be writing. I'm glad to see that there are actually people out there that enjoy literature as much as I do: I've been getting used to others giving me a pitying look when I tell them I'm studying literature.
Looking forward to getting involved and meeting you!

Hello...I'm Allison...as my name suggests, I'm a angsty poet! I also like to write fictional stories...I'm currently obsessed with the Twilight series and my favorite writer would have to be Emily Dickinson! She's the reason I stumbled into this place, looking up views on her unique poetry! I'm 17 years old and I am a Junior in High School. Despite my angst, I'm cheerful (for the most part) and enjoy friends! I've probably talked too much (I do that often ._.') so I will just leave it as this!

Hello to you literature fans!
Do I really have to tell you what one of my hobbies is? It's English-speaking literature! As a German, I've always found it amazing and interesting how short and simple you can express matters in English whereas you need long sentences to express the same in German (don't get me wrong, I'm very fond of my mother tongue). Moreover, I simply love the stories I read by Anglo-American writers! To share this love with others, I decided to join this literature discussion forum.
So I'm happy to have found this place!

Hello!

I'm not new, really. I lurk for the most part. I haven't been here in a while though so I thought I'd say 'hello'.

Having accomplished what I set out to do in saying hello, I'd also like to say that I'm quite proud of myself for making it ALL the way through "Fun with Dick and Jane". That one was a literary labrynth of complicated thought and dark corners, but yes, I persevered over the course of several years and have finally made it through.

Hello to all you bibliophiles!

I'm a normal-kinda person--sorry, no fascinating life stories here! ;) College student, books-and-music lover, future librarians of America member...:D
I started reading when I was three and never looked back! :)

For the most part, I am addicted to Chesterton, Lewis, Sayers, Tolkien, and British authors in general. I love poetry as well. There's no way I could name all my favorites, but the ones that come to mind are Eliot, Dickinson, and Edward Taylor.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all! Come by sometime--I'd love to talk!
