Hello all! I am a 15 year old high school student. I just joined yesterday and I don't know where to begin. As you can probably tell from my username, I love British literature! I also enjoy reading philosophy, fantasy, and science fiction. I am an all around bibliophile, however (lol I should have to say most people on here are). I enjoy reading in English and French and I hope to be proficient enough in Latin/Greek, so as to read in those languages. I love listening to Classical music, Jazz, and Broadway music and I have been playing the violin for about 7 years and piano for about 2 years. I also love dancing, singing, and acting and playing chess! I hope this suffices as an introduction, and I hope to start posting soon. Nice to meet you all! P.S. I enjoy maths and sciences, too.

I'm glad to meet someone my age who has a lot of the same interests on this site. I know this may seem a little childish but have you ever read the boxcar children series? I think there was one or two books about them being in a lighthouse. Who's your favorite Jazz artist.

Hi, I just joined.
I'm taking continuing education classes in the classics. Right now we're reading King Lear and I'm just blown away by it. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar reaction. I lost both of my parents last year, which makes reading it that much more difficult!

Hello,

First off, I have been stuck in high school for over ten years (it seems that I am never allowed to graduate). This sounds like a bad thing; however, unlike many students, I actually get paid to go there, and to be honest, I have grown to enjoy it.

Being a high school English teacher is a major challenge. I take risks every single day, trying out new techniques and methods to motivate and teach my students, but the rewards are beyond measure because I get to watch them leave and do amazing things with their lives.

I have a box of pictures, notes, and letters that I keep on my desk, what I call "my treasure box". Contained within this plain, black box are all the personalities I have encountered over the last decade of teaching. These are lives I have influenced in some small way, and they have influenced me as well. We, my students and I, have what biologists have called a symbiotic relationship. We interact each day with one another giving and receiving energy, life, and knowledge.

Well, I could go on and on, but I won't. I am lucky to have such an interesting occupation.

H'okay. What it do, everyone?
I'm a senior. I like to do art, and I like to act.
I'm fairly decent at both.
Oh, and I like to play video games.
I work and I go to school. It's lame.
I'm all about music.
As for books, I read quite a bit. Only in secret though...I have a reputation to keep up.

Well, along with most of the people who are recently replying, I am a High school senior. I like to read and play video games, but surprisingly even though I like to read, I am not a huge poetry fan. I have tried to get interested, but most of the writing just go way over my head but I am trying to get an understanding for it. I work a lot of the time, so that takes up a big chunk of my day, since I go half days at school. I will post more about me in a later section.

am proud of you Nirome, wish there were more teachers like you. the bad experiences one has at school stay with you a long time, so it's good to know there are people who care about what they do. Even if they are on the other side of the world. I live in Melbourne, it's a beautiful easy place to live. I stumbled across this site by chance, I wanted to talk books, I'm also new to computer conversations. Can't imagine logging up 100 posts let alone thousands like some. I love movies but prefer not to see one done of a favourite book, except perhaps Little Women by Jane Campion it was great. I hope I have my facts right. I'm trying to master German. I studied Fashion Design at Uni, and have worked in the industry since. I need to read more but run out of time. Have started reading Shantaram by Gregory Roberts, which coincidently is about a guy who escapes from jail in Melb. and travels to escape capture. As it's nearly 3" thick might take me awhile. I enjoy all the different points of view here as it encourages to think. Bye for now.:yawnb: it's late....

Hey everyone,

How's it going? Pretty good here. I am currently a high school senior and am so ready to graduate. Although I have no idea of where I am going to attend college. I am tentively planning on majoring in Business Administration.

I like to travel and have been to Europe and to the Caribbean. Those trips helped open my eyes to many things. I actually tried shark while I was in the Caribbean. It was really good and yes it does taste like chicken....but spicier.

Well I gotta go, catch you later.

This darling young Lady (cough* me cough*) Is a High School Senior. My future plans involve college Majoring in Fashion Design and Political Science. I know these are two very different subjects, but of some odd reason I think they are interesting. I may also go into philosophy but I'm not sure. I enjoy reading fantasy and fiction. I don't enjoy and romance novels. (Vomits). I greatly enjoy Dorthy Parker's poetry and also Edgar A. Poe's poetry. I enjoy reading Shakespeare my most loved play has to be A Mid Summer Nights Dream. I enjoy playing video games in my spare time, reading and sewing. I have a "petit ami" for 1 year his name is Jeff. Enough about me, Please.:p

Well, Im supposed to say something about myself but Im not allowed to include my location or my schedual because an ax muderer will surely kill me, and we all know that would be such a tragedy and what not. My name is Amelia..... and I live underground. My intrsests include goats, gymnastics, drama, and science. Im going to college next year and I possitivly cannot wait. I plan on majoring in Radiography. Big R says he is in love with this site, and personally I think he should marry it.
Im a big fan of reading but Im not crazy about poetry. I like it when authors get to the point and while it is suppose to be beautiful and such, I prefer when people state what they really mean instead of dancing around it in a metaphoric manner. Get to the point.
My favorite food is chicken and I like to ride bikes. :)

As per a warning from a certain teacher, I will offer no personal information in this post, in effort to keep the weirdos from abducting me.

No, not really. I must make myself known to the world. What's the worst that can happen?

I'm Zach, also a Senior in high school. To be completely honest, I'm not much of a reader at all, which will strike some people as odd. I LOVE to write, though. Writing has always been a passion of mine and it helps me deal with things in my life that are otherwise very annoying, painful, or just plain dumb. I believe writing is a very important facet in life and if you don't do it, you need to. Now, I'm not claiming I'm a good writer, in fact I'm not. I'm a terribly windy writer who doesn't know when to stop.

Anywho, that's me and my relavance to this forum. Good day to you.

My name is Cordell, but most just call me Walker. My partner Trivette and I spend most of our time busting up drug cartels, driving around in the big Dodge, and playing in the Texas All American Law Enforcement softball league. A day is not complete in less someone gets a roundhouse kick to the face. I spend alot of my time doing physical training and working out with the Total Gym muscle building system. I am currently suing NBC, claiming Law and Order are trademarked names for my left and right legs.

Well to be honest, this is the first time I have ever done anything like this. I have not bought into the whole myspace craze, and I find putting myself out there on the internet to be a terrifying prospect.:bawling: I am not one of those girls that one would consider to be outgoing, in fact I am that shy girl that sits in the front of the class, quietly never bothering anyone, until one day during class discussion suddenly explodes. Leaving everyone wondering "Where did that came from."
But what is life if you don't live a little. So I decided, okay actually I was told that I had to post otherwise my grade will be dropped, besides this website seems to a few steps up from myspace. So if you are a crazy stalker person, please do not come and kill me, for you do, you will completely ruin my trust in the goodness of mankind, not to mention this website.

Hey, I'm Heather. I'm a girl. I am getting ready to leave for college. I am compassionate, a good listener, intelligent, I have a ton of friends, I read ALOT, I am in love with shopping and celebrities. I want to be a Child Advocate Lawyer. It's a social worker with authority. I'm in for the long haul, it will probably take 10-11 years of college but if will be worth it in the end. Eventually I want to own my own law firm so I can make my own hours. I also want to run a rescue dog farm. I LOVE animals. I also am in LOVE with WILL FERRELL! He is a comedic genius! I just about die everytime he comes out with a new movie. If I could marry him, I would in a heartbeat. I go to church, its cool. I also work at a stupid grocery store, where I am a slave. When my friends and I get together, we end up doing stupid things. Like flour-ing and criso-ing people's cars. HAHA. We also like to put plastic silverware in people's yards. I love watching T.V. However, I only watch it for three hours at night. Primetime BABY!! I love Lost, all the CSI's, NCIS, October Road, Grey's Anatomy, Survivor, Desperate Housewives, and some I forgot. So that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Okay, so I'm not going to introduce myself because my "creative" user name is pretty self-explanatory and (hint, hint) its no pseudonym.
I want to remain as elusive and mysterious as possible, so don't expect to read an autobiography.

I am a soon-to-be high school graduate who is looking forward to beginning college life in the fall. I'm not exactly sure about my major yet, but I think that ancient Chinese literature sounds intriguing! NOT! (Sorry if I have offended anyone!) Really, I've been thinking of majoring in Psychology or Biology, and minoring in Spanish. All I know for sure at the moment is that I would like to be a doctor.
In addition, I like long walks on the beach, candlelit dinners, and...Oh, sorry. I forgot that this isn't for my Match.com profile.
HONESTLY, I like hanging out with my friends, listening to my IPOD while excercising, being outdoors when the weather is nice, trying new things (to some extent), and challenging myself. I'm an optimist- I try my best to make the most of the life I've been given. And I hope you don't feel you've wasted yours by reading this. Thanks for your time, and carpe diem!!!

Well what it do. I'm the one and only Tyler Fett. As you can tell i am kind of full of myself but hey there is nothing wrong with liking yourself. Well i love doing sports although i am not the best at some of the sports i do. I run cross country and track and i am preety good at cross country but i rock at track. i also "play" basket. Play is in paranthesis because i don't actually get to play i really just practice basketball and then get in to the games for free and wear the team uniform and get floor seats. It is preety cool but then if you think about it it sucks cause i work my butt of during the week and then i don't play on friday and saturday nights but hey i suck and there is nothing i can do about that. Well most people think i am crazy because i love to run but hey if i can get a college scholarship for it well then i think why not do what i am good at. Seems how there is no chance i am going to get a scholarship for basketball because most schools don't need an allstate bench warmer. well that is preety much me all i really do is play sports, organize JROTC events (because i am the battalion commander which means i am the head of everyone) and go on dates with girls. Most of the time the dates are not with the same girl every week. So my life is preety boring but i enjoy it so PEACE OUT

Well,

To say a little about myself, I've been reading since I was a little kid and I was always into the kind of dark and scary books that dragged you in. As I grew older, I decided that I was going to get into the Stephen King books and ones that were just out of this world and mysterious.

Anyway,
about myself.

Some of my hobbies are skating, books, online games, and stuff like that. I am really into computers at times. I like to build and work with them in my spare time. I've lived in a town that I believe is my own little hell, (Wouldn't you like to know!) lol. Anyway, its one of the smaller places here. I've been here since I was born and sorta grown into it.

I guess from some of the books I read influenced the way I started to become. A goth kid from some people! A Hardcore kid! or even my favorite![ a punk rocker!!! Anyway, as I got into high school, I got a bit worse but then grew out of it fast. I believed it just got old and I faded out of it.

I like to listen to pretty much any kind of music! Only things I can't stand is country, polka, and opera! No offense to anyone! I like to listen to hardcore music a lot. Stuff like: Everytime I Die, Killswitch Engage, In Flames. Then there is the grindcore stuff like Chiodos, Gwen Stacy, and many many more like that.

I spend my time with my friends and girlfriend and I enjoy every bit of it. Those two things matter the most to me! I would do anything for my girlfriend and my friends!

As you start to read some of these you really aren't getting to know "Me", but some of my hobbies and things I like. I guess you can call me a nerd? I guess you could even call me a skater? or Even emo from what this schools "Truth" believes lol...But thats your choice, you pick, label me all you want, I could care less! Labeling is a pathetic way of trying to think the labeler is sooooo much better than the labelee just because they can say their soooo degrading labels! lol

Well here is a bit of me! Please. feel free to comment and I will tell you more. This is just some stuff off the top of my head.

There is a thread you might find interesring Polartucan, called secret identities

And I perhaps one day hope to be known as an author and somewhat philosophical figure but that might be asking too much. :P

Hardcore is a genre consisting of bands like Hatebreed, Bury Your Dead, Throwdown etc..

And Grindcore consists of bands like Napalm Death, Carcass, Nasum, Dying Fetus, Terrorizer etc...
How in the heck did you come to the conclusion that Chiodos is grindcore...?

Nitro-Tech and Cell-Tech being two of my favorite. BSN Products would have to be my second favorite brand of muscle building supplements.

Take it easy on the product endorsements, Mr. Schwarzenegger, which are strictly forbidden under the Forum rules. :( Remember, it's the advertisements on the top and bottom of this website that pay the bills, not the products you are recommending in your thread.

However, if you want to mention how wonderful the folks at Amazon.com are, or glorify the help you received at Enotes.com, knock yourself out.;)

Nirome....i couldn't ask for a better English teacher for E12B. Thank you. this class is actually fun most English classes have made me want to sleep especially first thing in the morning but we do different things and try new things and have lengthy discussions about things that matter to us. Thank you again and have fun.

I live in the Dominican Republic (though I am American) and own a small store for pool supplies. The store isn't so busy, so it gives me lots of time to read. I'm sure I'll find here excellent discussions of books, essays, and short stories.

Hi!

I know this is a silly question *blush* but where is Russia?

Northern Asia and Eastern Europe

Dont listen to Baz, Russia in fact does not exist. Nessie on the other hand is completely real, and a haggis is a meercat like creature that we hunt.

I have many interests, I one day dream of traveling the world as much as I can and pursue a career in archaeology.

This isn't what I would expect the great Caleb to be. xD. I thought you would be a house bum and sit around, not want to leave the house!

Nessie; that's a Rangers fan? Or they are called Lochies?

Hail Hail, the Celts are here,
What the hell do we care,
What the hell do we care,
Hail Hail, the Celts are here,
What the hell do we care now...

For it's a grand old team to play for,
For it's a grand old team to see,
And if you know the history,
Its enough to make your heart go,
Di-de-da-ra,

We don't care what the animals say,
What the hell do we care,
For we only know,
That there's gonna be a show,
And the Glasgow Celtic will be there.

Sure it's the best darn team in Scotland
and the players they are grand,
We support the Celtic
'cos they are the finest in the land we love them.
We'll be there to give the Bhoys a cheer
When the league flag flies,
And the cheers go up 'cos we know the Scottish Cup
is coming home to rest at Paradise.

WayneMan,

Don't forget that you are the "Pentecostal Poet", so suggesting that someone "quit being a douche" and to "quit being a piece of crap" is probably not the best way to lead them to salvation. :argue: Private messages are used to convey messages of this sort or go to "myspace.com" (a place where public displays of stupidity are encouraged). Well I'm new here and i guess I've got nothing to say that i don't say in poetry. I can be so boring even my clothes have trouble sticking around. Words though, now they and i go way back. Sometimes I feel I'm having an affair with words because i can hear music in them that I'm beginning to think might not be there. At least not in my work. But what can you do. I was the sperm that won the race so this is my life and these evenings are my time to write and post. So here goes. I'm a free verser. And rather than choosing the best word i will often choose the truthful one. My styles a bit odd, and sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. I also spell badly and my grandma is worse.
http://www.online-literature.com/forums/images/smilies/yawnb.gif
:yawnb:
This is a poem about from my poetic source to my physical shell. There are some colourful words in there but it's not vulgar and if you find it vulgar then i may have to move on. Here goes.

My Siamese Brother

He is mushroom with out me,
hiding in the dark of his own brooding inertia.

He is good for carrying things;
for typing and placing new paper in the printer.

He breaks from me . . . constantly.
I think he is having an affair with the TV.

He likes Sex, TV, sex, videos,
sex, TV and more videos:
Especially if the videos are to do with sex.

He does my bidding eventually,
once I make his head sore.

He likes what I give him:
as a child marvels over the broken shells
the ocean leaves on its shores.

We are connected by him.
He can exist without me
but only with luck, will I live without him,
or parts of my shedded skin
pressed into the pages, like dull butterflies.

He is wanting to go now.
He hates it when I take up time.

He is my limbs and lungs:
I am his hidden places: his microscope:
his angel simmering in a red devil’s skin.

I am his Siamese twin
I leave a stain of words
To measure my search.

Well, that's a good one, Morlep. Sounds a bit Freudian. Did you read Siegmund Freud before writing your poem?
Can I give it to my students for analysis?

Morlep
04-14-2007, 10:25 AM
Yes you can give it to your students if you tell them i have visual poetry site at threeminutes10.com and a blog their too where i post a new poem daily.

And no, of course i heard of him, but i left school in what I think you American's call grade school.

I just wrote this one. Just now and its in reply to all the sadness i find in some many posted poems. Thank you also for your lovely reply.

Food

My daughter doesn’t hug me
She throws herself at me and knows I’ll catch her
Then feeds on my touch.

My son does it too.
Curls up against me on the couch and presses.

I’ve had this from other people before, and no doubt I ate off my mother
And even my dad.

And then there’s that period where we don’t eat.
Where we move away and starve for some reason that’s not evident.

Some of us never feed again
But choke our souls on the supplements
We convince ourselves are nourishing.

Round here, in the parts of the news that never make the air,
Everybody is killing themselves.

Kids, fathers, mothers, grandmothers, old men who’ve lost their wives, and kids.

Underline kids.

I don’t get it.

I don’t.

But I wish I had more food.

I wish I could pull the blue days down onto a table of touch
And have you sad ones roll in the joy.

‘Cause there is joy.
There is.
And it’s real.
And you can touch it.
And it’s so much more lovely
than the cold.

There really isn't much to say about me. Mostly, I just do school and read in my spare time. Don't hang out with friends, kind of a loser...

For the past few months, I've just read chick lit and other modern creations centered around the romance/drama genre. Lately, though, I've been wanting to become more well-read, so I'm starting in on all the classics, starting (naturally) with Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Admittedly, I started reading it because I'd loved the movie so much (love Kate Winslet) but later discovered just how close the movie was to the book. Emma Thompson did an excellent job keeping true with her screenplay.

Anyway, my hobbies include reading, acting, and singing. I always to the plays at my highschool and some of them happen to be musicals, which is where I developed my singing ability. Acting is really the only way I can just let go and use all my angst and emotion for something constructive and entertaining for other people. And reading, of course, I do all the time because I'm too damn shy to go out with people.

My favorite books include Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen and the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. I don't have a specific favorite genre, but mostly I stick with romances, dramas, and stories geared toward females. Hope to expand my horizon though. Also, I love the Bridget Jones books by Helen Fielding. They're so hilarious and are the reason I sometimes use only the back half of sentences.

I am very glad to be part of the community and hope y'all will give me good book recommendations!:D

Hello, everyone. I joined the Forum because I saw the "Best Short Stories" entries, and I thought it might be fun to list some of mine.

As far as authors, my favorites are classic authors: Faulkner, Guy de Maupassant, Melville, Flaubert, Joseph Conrad, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, and many others.

Hope to find some interesting lists and discussions!

I joined this forum yesterday, since the day has passed and now it's wednesday after a few hours.

I like staying up on nights pondering about life (Just kidding, but I like staying up doing absolutely nothing). I must admit there are very interesting and intelligent people on this forum (I learned so much vocabulary...) and would like to stay as long as possible.

I'm still working on structure, and vocabulary... as you can see it's quite poor!

So welcome me, for I am here to post, learn, and associate! :thumbs_up

It makes me feel bad when people describe themselves like that, although I will be the first to admit I do the same thing. I hope you will like it here and find many new forum friends. :)

everyone!

Brother Isaac

hey,

i'm isaac.

i admittedly despised literature when i was growing up. but coming to college made me grow quickly. i fell in love with ginsberg's 'howl' and it was after i realized how fascinating poetry could be that i became hooked. so here i am now, a student with great hopes for what literature can offer.

i read a lot, but i feel that reading just doesn't cut it. through literature, i can be lifted and supplanted to a different realm, but if i keep these experiences to myself, i find that i have a tough time actually experientally relating to what i read.

so i guess thats why i joined this forum. sort of like an anonymous support group, no faces, no hand gestures, just the purity of language, just speech, and just the flow and release of ideas. if anyone wants to let me know where to even begin here on the forums, please--help would be greatly appreciated.

peace for real,

isaac.

Hi there youngdone. :)

Hi Brother Isaac. You can begin however you like, but based on your statement you might want to read through the poems, poets and poetry (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=8) section. A great many of the members also post their own poetry in the writing/personal poetry (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=14) section.

General literature (the area to discuss authors not found on the author list as well as just general lit discussion.) can be found here (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=4), and you can chat and play games (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=2353) in the general chat (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=10) section.

Hi everyone,

I've made a couple of posts here and I've been really enjoying reading other peoples posts, but I'm yet to introduce myself really.

I'm an English Literature student in New Zealand. I also major in Maori language and Maori studies if that is of any interest to anyone...

After spending my first few (!) years out of High School, getting drunk and falling down a lot, I decided to go to University on a whim, just to learn another language really (Maori). Anyways, one trimester I had a spare time slot to fill so I decided to take an ENG-LIT paper too, and now I'm a essay-loving, poetry-devouring, literature junkie. That's not to say that I never read critically before, or that I never had quasi-intellectual (and often drunken) literary discussions, it's just that I never wrote the essays. But now I do, and I love it.

The ironic thing is, I actually received an automatic scholarship to study English literature after I got 96% or something in my final High School exams (in NZ we call it Bursary??). But at that point in time (age 18), I was convinced that I would never go to University, let alone to study English. No, no. My primary aim was to get drunk and fall down!

That well and truly accomplished, I am now free to be an almost teetotaling (almost...) poetry nut who likes to sing and draw and read. Hiya.

I would put favorite authors, books, poems etc, but there are so many it's ridiculous. Oh well, maybe a few:

Yukio Mishima, David Foster Wallace, E.E. Cummings, T.S. Eliot, Patricia Grace, Anais Nin, Knut Hamsun, Jane Austen, Janet Malcolm, Stevie Smith, Philip Larkin, Rosemary Wells, Tove Janson.

And on and on....

I really like this forum.

I don't know about Maori studies or the language. But, I think I have read a short story on a Maori village (I think the name of the story was also the same). Does this place have hot water springs? The only thing that I remember is the springs with medicinal properties. Do you know of such a short story? Or am I imagining reading it somewhere? Or is it someplace else that has hot water springs?

Oh, I almost forgot...

Hi Madhuri,

Yeah, Maori is the name for the indigenous people and language of New Zealand. We have a lot of thermal pools and springs in NZ, especially in places like Rotorua and Taupo. Maybe that was it?? Apparently they are very therapeutic, but I'm not an expert.

Thanks for the welcome, I'm really enjoying the forums.

As Kiwi Aunty has said, there are literally hundreds of hot water springs and spas around and most would have had a Maori village nearby, in the past, mainly for cooking. The only one nowadays where a village is preserved, is Whakarewarewa, in Rotorua.

Some of the hot springs do have mineral-enriched water which has actual therapeutic benefits, but several are also home to the amoeba which causes amoebic meningitis - a fatal disease.

My next bext interest is theoretical Physics as i had graduated in Physics before entering the Software field. i'm trained in Indian classical dance and music and enjoy almost all forms of Music that i come across. I'm a new member here (thought I've already post twice sorry... )
writing from Milan, Italy.
I generally love reading but what I love the most is reading in English because it helps me in learning new words and keep the language alive and rich (or so I do hope!)
I've started reading in English with light books as Bridget Jones Diary, because I thought they were more at my level, but in the last two years I've moved on British History Books and English Literature Classics.
I'm currently reading Jane Eyre and I'm enjoying it very very much! The plot is so charming and the English of Charlotte Bronte is a pleasure to read.
Beside reading I also love animals (I have 4 cats :)) and nature, when I have the possibility to leave Milan for a while I like to take long walks through woods or national parks.
I love drawing, sewing and go to the cinema :)
and doing the shopping of course! :D

I hope to find friends here to discuss about books and maybe history!
thanks everyone to be here :)

Well, I've been to just about most of the major cities. My family is actually from a town near Avellino. So I've been over a few times. Is New york like a Europewan city? I don't know. It does have lots of culture, but being 8 million people makes it different from any city I know. The shear size of it, and of course the skyscrapers, makes it different. Lot of people of Italian ethnicity here though. :) Like me. :D
