Hello everyone!

I'm a English Major at SDSU.
I absolutely love words -- I have a thing for words or phrases that sound a certain way, for example.
I'm also extremely into any other artistic forms including graphic design (yes! it's an art!) and photography.
I aim to write for a living (as far fetched as that sounds), and play writing seems to be my forte (dialogue is so so much fun!).
I am, after a long enough splash in modern poetry, completely unaware of most basic grammar rules.
I'm very temperamental, so I bet there will be days I'll sound fantastic and others when I will not. At all. :P

I look forward to a great time in these forums!
Yay for lit!!! :D

Hi!

I was invited here by one of your members, HerGuardian. Not really sure why, being a rather salty and seasoned pirate. Though my last name does make an appropriate pun, unintential of course. And I have been told I do write some interesting stories; helps to pass the time on long voyages at sea.

Perhaps I may post one or two. Until then, I look forward to expanding my horizons beyond maps and charts, manifests and crew rosters.

Keep your back to the wind, your powder dry and your crew content.

I work as an instructional aide in a public school and I also work part time in a library. I love it, but it can be detrimental to my health. Hi Lynne, Happy you joined up. I know you will enjoy it here. There are such great people and some are now my best friends; soon you will feel right at home. I will have to work on directing you to some of the threads I think you will enjoy. I know what you mean about 'detrimental to your health' - I can't even make a dent in the last batch of books I purchased from Dover; I haven't been to the library for ages, out of sheer guilt, in not reading these books first. I will get there eventually. Need any help, just ask me on my profile page or in the personal email.

Scheherazade, Thank you for the flattering comment to my friend; I feel quite honored. You know I love it here and probably will be a 'lifer'. I am sure Lynne will enjoy all the benefits, as well, and have a great time on this terrific site. She loves to read and watch plays and movies, so this is definitely the right place to be.

I stumbled across these forums as I was looking for critical commentary about Catch-22, which I'm currently reading- imagine my surprise to find that it is your book club's March selection!

An avid reader in my youth, I found that all the reading requirements in college zapped my desire, and for about a decade thereafter I read books very rarely. Lately I've re-committed to reading classics and discovering contemporary authors. This month I completed Lawrence's "Women in Love" and hope to enjoy a new book every month.

I'm one of those folks who cannot NOT complete a book, even if I hate it, so we'll see how long it takes me to get through Catch-22...:D

Cheers everyone!

My name's Vincent. I'm 19, out of high school, and doing a year of personal studies before going to college to get my B/A in Writing & Literature.
I love reading, I try to do about 100-200 pages a day. My favorite authors are Jack Kerouac, Louis-Ferdinand Celine, Marcel Proust, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Allen Ginsberg, Walt Whitman, Arthur Rimbaud, Dylan Thomas, Henry Miller, Kenneth Rexroth, Aldous Huxley, Friedrich Nietzsche, and William S. Burroughs. Right now I'm reading 'Walden' by Henry David Thoreau.

I came to this forum because I was searching for somewhere to discuss literary things, as none of my friends like to read and I have very little opportunity to talk about it otherwise.

Hello,

I'm originally from warm, sunny Barbados, now living in cold, dreary Dearborn, Michigan. I'm almost twenty-two, studied English Lit. at University, am involved/working in fashion design and marketing of my own line, but still love reading and still make time for it. I consider myself a failed writer because I don't think I have enough imagination, but I still love reading the writings of others.

Some of my favorite authors are Tolstoy, Proust, Chekhov, Lawrence (D.H. and T.E.), Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy, Charles Dickens, P.G. Wodehouse, Edgar Allen Poe, many more.

I love movies, too. Favorite actor is Humphrey Bogart. Favorite actresses are Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Carole Lombard.

I joined because I was looking for a place to discuss literature with others since I'm no longer in school and don't discuss it there.

Welcome MissScarlett, I know we just meet up on the 'Richard II' thread, but it is good to hear a little about you here and meet you formally...welcome to the forum! I am sure you will be a great asset and enjoy it here very much.

I am an avid Lawrence fan - D.H., but I would love to read T.E., as well. A few of us usually have a D.H.Lawrence Short Story thread going monthly; so, when it starts up again, (I am hoping soon), I hope you can join in. You can check out the thread and how many of the stories we have already discussed. I will send you the link, if you need it; I am sure by now the thread has gotten buried and may be several pages back. I will post in it soon to bring it up to date in the listings again. We also, have a similar Chekhov thread. Hope when we start that one up - probably by summer, you can join in as well. Both are a lot of fun and quite enlightening.

I also love Thomas Hardy and have read most of his work, but not much of his poetry, just his novels. Tolstoy is an old favorite of mine, as well. You have good taste in literature and I know you said you love Shakespeare, as well....now that is a fine taste in literature and poetry combined.

I love old movies too. LadyWentworth and I are always posting about them in the movie thread. Again, welcome and enjoy browsing around the place.

HI :D

I have been around this forum for 2 weeks now, or is it 3 already? Not sure - so that would be the first thing to confess: my memory could be better ;). I did not post in this thread straight away as I was a bit in a hurry when I registered and I did not remember it until now.

I am a 23-year old student and I should be done studying by now, but I am a bit of a procrastinator. I know I should snap out of it. Point is, there are just too many nice movies, wonderful books and breathtaking music in this world :). Each one of these can make me dream away and forget what I should be doing for a considerate amount of time.

I choose "Sapphire" as an user name as I like the bright blue colour and it's the stone of the month September - my birthday month. My avatar is the end of a necklace, with some sapphire stones on it and a white stone with the word "WISH" on it in silver. I would like to say "dare to dream", though I am aware of the fact that reality needs to be kept in touch with ;)

I am not a native English speaker, but we have many English movies, TV series and music in the Netherlands so I did kind of grow up in the middle of it - yes, I'm Dutch ;). I do tend to construct my own sentences sometimes though, making perfect sense in my eyes but none in somebody elses. So please let me know when I am babbling about and not saying anything relevant. If you tell me, I can do something about it :D

I came here to talk about literature, as it falls completely outside my line of studying and I thus do not talk about it much. People I know are not interested in talking about books, or at least not in a different manner than "do you like it?" or "you should try this, it is interesting".
I would like to learn how to talk about them in a more "literate" manner. As in being able to recognise themes and styles and stuff like that. I think it will be fun to look at books in a different way than just thinking "nice story".

I am a sucker for details: one sentence in a book, movie or song can make me like the whole of it. In the same way, one bad choice of words can make me forget about the good stuff. I am however quite a positive person and tend to put more significance on the parts I like than on the things I dislike ;)

Well, I could go rambling on but I guess I should not. That is another problem I have: I tend to use many words to get a point across. I like poetry (combination of songs and literature) and admire it when a whole story can be told in a little amount of words.

I also like to just chat, some of you might have seen me in the general chat already ;)

Take care,
Sapphire

Edit I just realized it might be interesting to tell what I read. I just finished "Jude the Obscure" by Tom Hardy. I really liked it, especially as it surprises me every time again that people from former times could think so much like us.
When characters get totally caught up in their feelings and become very emotional I find it hard to connect - though I do think it interesting to read about that I am too down to earth to really get what they are feeling.
I really liked Catch-22 (Joseph Heller) and Ships that Pass in the Night (Beatrice Harraden).

I usually read while travelling, and as that often means walking you can see me wonder about with a book in my hands - crossing busy street and oblivious of the world around me. Somehow, I do not stumble while doing so while I'm quite a clumsy person. I even read while riding a bicycle, though I have to say I only do such on (not that busy) separate bicycle paths as I do not want to run into a car...

Hi everyone. My name is Johnathan, John for short, and I just registered to the site. I joined on impulse after my teacher shared with me a thread talking about a book we are soon to read. I saw a small sample of what this forum has to offer. Everyone throws in their two cents and everyone can benefit from it! I love sharing ideas and perspectives on books that I have read or pretty much anything. I am a junior attending Whittier Technical Vocational Regional High school. I am also an athlete, I have a passion for basketball and meeting new people. I thank whoever started this forum and to my teacher for showing me this wonderful community.

My favorite book I have read so far was 'The kite Runner'. I have not been a big reader my whole life. When in middle school, I was a straight A+ student all the way up to eighth grade. Then when I enrolled in high school things kind of came to a stop. I picked my act up after some time and now I maintain A's and B's, rarely C's. My vocational area lies in the field of Telecommunications (Information Support Services.) I started an Internship with Raytheon IDS. Integrated Defense Systems has much to offer. It is also the most profitable branch of Raytheon as you might know. I specialize in computer hardware and have a strong feel for software as far as installing apps and programs for clients to use on their laptops. I troubleshoot computers when we notice a startup or hardware failure. I like where i am and hope to carry it on with me for the rest of my life.

When Im at home or hanging out with my friends like any person would, I listen to music and play sports. I have a craving for games of different sorts such as RTS, MMORPG, and FPS. Some games I play are Halo 3, Supreme Commander, and World of Warcraft. Music I listen to is heavy metal from bands like As I Lay Dying, Slipknot, Unearth and In Flames. I also have a thing for classic rock! I listen to AC/DC, Guns 'n Roses, ZZ Top and Scorpions. Hip-hop, dance, and house music really get me going.:D

I am hungry for the knowledge and opinions of others. I think well of myself for my age and think I am slightly more mature than other kids of my age. I look forward to meeting everyone and hope I have fun here.

Thanks for reading

I have only written a few poems lately, as a respite from my usual work as a family law lawyer. I enjoy painting in acrylics, especially landscapes from southern Alberta and portraits, singing baroque music, hiking and just being in a forest, especially West Coast forests. Here is my poem:

Forests forever

I'd rather be a mossy patch beneath the cedar tree
than on a rooftop tennis court in Dubai country.
Solomon seals and huckleberry line my forest path
but the beauty is long forgotten by engineers doing math.

Science has measured each plant and species,
chemically explored new genetic possibilities,
so we tinkered and harvested,
we skim the cream of life;
our ordering brains exploit
so we might Survive
and breed
and grow each mother's child.

Maybe eternally our species will grow and recreate
taking more and more and more of precious living space
till the threshold point is reached,
and the balance is tipped,
and biobankruptcy is complete.

Only then as we slowly gasp and fade
into circumstances most forlorn
and pray that a saviour will come to the planet's aid
and remove its crown of circling strangling thorns

2. The dappled cedar canopy alive with exquisite mosses
simply cannot cooexist with corporate profit & losses.
The voices of birds suspended in silencio extremis
resonate in the cool misty forest epidermis
of fern and needle, leaf , vine and trunk

So Summon we, we command thee
the forest stewards of this century,
collectively, governmentally,
Those that know the forest spirit,
Decide now what is greed, then kill it;

Or answer to us,
the collective conscience of all human souls upon this planet
why is was necessary to disturb natures sanctuary,
for the golden egg and profit motive;
the Midas touch will leading us to the ultimate calamity.

The skin of our planet is daily torn away,
and stripped with hyper speed,
not radioactive decay
and ulcerated by our corporate maw,
the tentacles of our appetites grow
to reach and pull and extract unremittingly
the compounds we seek for our comfort, our wars, with no pity
for the interwoven fabric sublime
so nature we leave behind.

But stop,
let us not cause the forest to lose it's strength,
its power, its varied composition
its solitude and latitudinal position.
For the future is long, dark and confused.
And fertility may stop, and our golden age may set,
in a haze and effects of toxic contaminants;
Instead, leave the last few tracts now left in the wild,
and the grasses, jungles, forests and fields,
for our very very distant future human child
who we bless with the seas and the song of the wind
and the fruits of the sweetness of wisdom, but not our sins.

Have we not have enough in our homes, cars and planes
to stop the activity that may be insane?
Therefore, take less each day and share, content to just to be.
Try to limit consumption & harmful technology
so from your grave it can be said
that you had love for the planet.

Thank you for the welcome, Janine. Sons and Lovers has always been one of my favorite novels. I've read some of Lawrence's short stories, but not all. I wish someone would publish a compilation of them.

Marvelous, MissScarlett; so glad to meet up with someone who loves "Sons and Lovers" as I do. Well, it is funny, as the avid fan of Lawrence that I am, the first book that turned me onto the author was not "Sons and Lovers", but rather "Women in Love", which followed it by a few novels. I still love that book the best for some reason but "Sons and Lovers' is only a hair behind now, especially since I realise how autobiographical it is, and also read it twice. I have read about 4 biographies of the author and much more resource material. The thing is when I first tried to read "Sons and Lovers" I could not get into it and then next try I could not put it down. I guess it was my timing. Now I have actually read L's first two novels "The White Peacock" and "The Trespasser". These are hard to find. We, on this site, are planning to read "The Rainbow" and discuss that sometime soon; maybe we can pull that off in the summer. I hope you can join in.

I haven't read all of Tolstoy, either, but I've loved what I've read.

Exactly my sentiments. I guess I have only read some short stories and 'Anna K', but I plan to read more T. I bought a few of his I have been interested in for sometime now. Of course someday I will tackle "War and Peace", but I haven't the patience to do so presently.

Chekhov and Jane Austen are my favorites. I wasn't a big Chekhov fan but now I got into his work from encouragement from another Litnet member and I enjoy and appreciate it very much. I would like to read his plays after the short stories; I recently bought a book of Russian plays. I have one set of short stories of Chekhov's narrated by Kenneth Branagh on a 3 CD set. I love listening to that set.

Yes, I do love Shakespeare, and will try to contribute to the discussion of Richard II, but I'm not Shakespeare expert! LOL Still, it doesn't get much better than the Bard.

Don't worry - believe me, none of us are Shakespeare scholars or experts. We just work our way through them the best we can. Usually we end up learning from each other which is always the beauty of a forum discussion, don't you think?

Oh, Women in Love is a great book! That's another favorite of mine. I haven't read The White Peacock or The Trespasser. I love to read The Rainbow with you and others. I think it would be great for discussion and with Lawrence, there's always so much to discuss. I wish someone would do a collection of all of Lawrence's short stories like they do with other short story writers. I wonder if his novels have eclipsed his short stories in the publishing world?

It's always great to learn from one another. I'm glad I found a forum where people actually love to discuss literature. A lot of them I've participated in deteriorate into mindless chatter or arguing. It's nice to find one where actual discussion is going on.

Oh no Scarlett, you like Lawrence as well? I think you're going to fit in really well. :) Well, we're glad you found us. ;)

What if the ways of the End were near and all things might soon fizzle and fray from the smoldering pain dealt betwixt one and an other?

Don't know where that came from. But seriously, what if?

In any event, here I am. I have arrived at this forum much to my liking as I now finally have a place to vent what I want which won't warrant wan wishes. Or maybe they will. The upshot is that here in this forum I have found a digital litterary corner where I can bask in the words of the great and have, at least, the potentiality of being agreed with. ;)

Hi everybody ! Firstly, I want to tell you that I'm French, so, sorry if I don't write very well. I'm 16 ( 17 on April, 20th ^^) and I learn English since I was in primary school. I'm in high school. I love Literatur. I read since I learnt to read. Literatur is ma life. My favourites author are Jane Austen, Emile Zola, Flaubert...I love sisters Brontës too. I have a lot of favourite books, but I can say that the favourite of favourite is Pride&Prejudice. I'm crazy of Mr Darcy! I've read Pride&Prejudice, Persuasion, Sence&Sensibility, Northanger Abbey of Jane Austen. Mansfield Park's waiting me.
I read sometimes in English. I've read The Jane Austen Book Club and Christmas Tale by Charles Dickens.
I like " classic" book like Hugo's book for instance. I read sometimes literatur youth like Harry Potter by J.K.Rowling.
After high school I would like to study literature. I want to be journalist.
I think I've finished =) So, if you have some questions, I'll answer you.

hello everyone. I will refreain from writing a lengthy introduction. I am a highschool student and i love literature. Writing, reading , plays, all of it. I have loved to read since i was a young child ( im sure many of you consider me child because im a mere senior in highschool and so many of you are well beyond college, so i will be specific and say "young"). However im not much of a performer in the drama department, mainly because many of my best friends are fellow jocks. Yes I am quite the athlete and apparently im a rare breed , do to the athleticism and love for literature. It is for this reason I am greatful for wonderful message boards such as this one because i love to discuss literature and my best friend and fellow captain of the football team hasnt read a book for pleasure since the 5th grade. Im almost certain it was one from the Captain Underpants serie. so thanks.. by the way i just started getting into james joyce and i need a little help. Ive been reading about him because i feel to truely understand an artists work you must understand them as a person, for the most part. thanks everyone.

We had a wonderful discussion on "Women in Love"...I guess it was 2 yrs ago; am I right Virgil? The thread still exists, but must be way back there in the pages by now; sorry you were not around then. I need to copy that discussion as a text file to my HD; first I have to find it. It's my favorite Lawrence book. I read it twice and listened to the audio narration now, nearly twice. I love it. I love the beautiful writing in "The White Peacock" but it is an early work and has it's flaws; however, it's brilliant just the same, because the young Bert Lawrence was brilliant from the start. It is not an easy book to find. "The Trespasser" I read recently. It was really different and the prose was amazingly gorgeous. It felt like a long prose poem. I am surprised that more people do not read that book. I knew the background story of how it came about - the idea taken from a true, a story relayed by his friend Helen concerning her romantic but brief experience with a married man. One of his short stories relates to this novel, so that stimulated my curiosity.
Well, "The Rainbow" will no doubt be the next novel we all do; us Lawrence enthusiasts.

Yes, Virgil, I think we found another person to recruit for the short stories. Lynne50 also likes Lawrence. This is great; always good to find new participants.

It is and we do that. Sometimes we start out with a Lawrence short story and some say they don't like this or that about the story, and by the end of the discussion, how much our perceptions have been altered. It is interesting to see that process and how we all learn from each other. I love the serious discussions we have had on here, too. There are still lots of threads that are 'light' and even pure nonsense, but sometimes sparks of genius do come through and YES, we do actually discuss literature here in quite a number of threads.

hello everybody, :
every thing has a first time, so this is mine here;
I'm from Algeria , I graduated last year in Letters and Foreign Languages( English) ,
I like reading novels , shortstories, but I'm not fond of poetry, I don't know why ( for instance because I've never dealt with one before ) , English is my third language after Arabic (the first ) and French ( as the second ) .
So this is all for now

Hi everyone! Well, firstly, I don't really know how to make an introduction... words currently fail me at this point of time because I just took a dump and then decided to write an introduction here because I'm so random like that. I'd probably go run a few circles later on, but that's not really relevant here, is it?

So anyway, I'm actually migrating from my previous watering hole (heh heh), but I'm getting impatient with that place because of the lack of intellectual stimulation there. It's flooded with kids and I guess I need to grow up a little.

I enjoy a lot of things, from literature to chemistry; so much so that my list would never be an exhaustive one, so instead, I'd rather list the things I do NOT like, but then again, who the heck is so negative in their first introduction?

I hail from a little sunny island in SouthEast Asia called Singapore. I'm currently 21 at point of writing and I'm working as an operations executive.

I just completed my Diploma in Biotechnology last year and am currently just starting to learn about life.

I've been through a lot in my 21 years; most of them bad experiences, but because of my horrible memory, I live on a day-to-day basis.

I'm ADD/ADHD so I tend to be random and unpredictable.

I enjoy writing, music, poetry, philosophizing and psychology. My dream is to be a psychologist and I'm figuring out a way to become one.

I do hope to learn a lot from the community here because I feel this would be a place I would be able to fit in pretty nicely. I'd love a mental challenge every now and then.

Oh btw, I'm an ENTP Choleric Sanguine.

Nice to meet you all and I do hope to make tons of buddies here!

Peace and God bless!

I look forward to share ideas and comments about books with you all

Hi, I stumbled upon this site while looking for some ideas on conducting Creative Writing Workshops for kids. Liked what I saw, and registered myself. If anyone has done this sort of thing before, please share your thoughts. I am basically a fiction writer who has published several short stories and have a novel being serialised on a website. As I believe that most children's natural creativity gets stifled as they grow up, I decided to have some workshops in my house for children aged 8 to 10 yrs. Response has been good - M.

Hi everyone, I am super excited to find this site! I don't know anybody else that actually likes reading books, diregarding chick-lit (does that make anybody else giggle?), in real life.

I have set myself the task of tackling 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die and I want to get more out of the books than just ploughing through them and ticking them off my list.

I am currently working at a wildlife park where I look after the koalas, my day revolves around satisfying the little beasts and trying to stop them from climbing up my leg.

I had been enrolled at uni completing a Bachelor of Applied Science, majoring in Animal Science, but have decided to switch to my other love and applied for a BA majoring in English and Creative Arts. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with any of it, I'm more interested in pleasing myself and then worrying about consequences.

My favourite books: The Last of the Mohicans, Watership Down, The Virgin Suicides, The Magic Faraway Tree :D, The Lord of the Rings ummmm... That's all I can think of for now.

Currently reading: The Picture of Dorian Gray

I'm looking forward to chatting with you all!

P.S. I dig music

Hihi! Here I am, new to this forum! I love books. Give me a book and I'll read it, for sure!

I was always the book beast, sitting against the wall all by myself, escaping into any book that I could get my little hands on! Teachers would scorn me, take my books away! But I'd always sneak them. I'm able to control my book-reading urges now.. Just barely! I have a problem! Bahaha. I'm probably far too broad-minded when it comes to books, not like my dear book beauty!

Oh yeah, and here's my guy, BookBeauty, to tell you all about his deepest passions in the world of literature. Or maybe just to say Hello. :D

Joined yesterday, made a few posts.. Hello, people.:)
What do I read?.. I'm probably different from many people here because actually, I'm getting bad about reading. Nothing seems that interesting to me and I have a habit of starting one book after another until I've got several unfinished books. So perhaps I joined in some hope that being around people who love books and reading would motivate me to read more. I don't seem to have as much patience for books anymore and my eyes get sleepy reading the words sometimes. I want to enjoy reading books more like other people do, but I guess I'm becoming more of a picky reader.
Anyway, hello and I hope I enjoy this place..Thanks.

Are you using a hosting site? I recommend Photobucket. It is so easy to upload to there and you can keep your photos in categories. Name a file before you do upload to it because once you post the URL in here it will not be here should you move that file. You have to use the [IMG] formating in the hosting site - you just copy that one out and past right in the body of this text box. Any problems, let me know.

Welcome to all newbies! Wow, we have had a flood of new people lately - great to see it!:D

I am a bit of a hoarder and have collected all sorts of things over the years, coins, banknotes & books. I started to do a spring clean the other day (even though we are going into winter) and I found a 1st edition 1923 of DH Lawrece's Kangaroo. I have begun to read it but took time out to try and find out a bit more about this book - but I can't seem to find out very much, can anybody help?

Good evening, this being my first few minutes on this site, I am taking it easy with the introductory speech. So perhaps bullitans are going to be more usefull.
1. I was born near a family reservation in NC, and since have moved over 50 times. I have lived up in the mountains,as well on two islands, bundled up in cold weather, and stripped in the tropics, lived in large houses and resided in small appartments.
2. I come from a military family, background being mostly Cherokee but with Russian, and some other euro trash thrown in.
3. The only family in which I speak with is my father/mother who lives his days in Malawi.
4. I have worked at an elementary school as a librarian, a hospital as an Occupational Therapist, a outdoor theater as an actor, an international center as a foreign diplomat, a Cuban restaurant as a server, a Microbrewery, a natural foodstore, and massage therapy.
5. I am a walking oxymoron, I have no idea what my path in life is, I enjoy random events randomly, and let's see...... I am easily amused, rarely awed.

I have just arrived at this site - quite by accident really - the worm-hole was open and the Prophets were out so I visited.
I am at present studying at the Open University - completing an education that was halted in 1952, I applied to study there after being bullied into it by a well loved young friend - who calls me Nain (Welsh for Granny):)
I love to cook - I always cook with wine - sometimes I even add some to the food, fond too much of cooking I carry a little more weight than I should, But I have a love of communication, all sorts of needlework, craftwork, reading.
I have chosen a character from the Peanuts Cartoon series as an Icon I hope it is visible - it should be Woodstock
I watch very little TV but CSIs and occasionally some fantasy (?Merlin)

I am long retired, happily married and enjoy the company of my scattered children and other relatives when we manage a get together.

My great grandfather wrote a number of book(lets) during the period 1880-1920 including the British response to Spain's request for a celebration of the 300th anniversary of the books first publication of Don Quixote. He reports that the first translation was an English one. Interesting.

I wonder if any enthusiast on this site has ever seen the anniversary report?

Hmmm.........

I guess I could lie and say that I'm an interesting person and that I live in a big house and travel all over the world, but I don't really like liars. That being said I kind of decided to stick to my real life, which is about as interesting as the sequel to "Gone With the Wind." I have like I said in my profile a dog named Annie she's a miniature Dash, two Persian cats named Houdini and Misfit, a Beta Fish named Fred, and a hamster named Peanut. I also had a bird named cheese but he kind of died. :( I don’t have a really Interesting life I play soccer at school, love to read (Right now I'm reading Wicked Lovely) and I paint, very well in fact. Another of my hobbies is poetry and I plan to post some of mine on this site. I used to live in Illinois, Missouri, and New York which was bad cause I HATE, HATE,HATE snow and the cold but I now live in Florida which is heaven because it never, never, snows. And that's about it, theirs not much else to say about me except that I am 16 , drive a car, and can barely afford to pay for my gas and Insurance as a Ice Cream Scooper at Baskin Robins which is where I work. So there you go... that's all. So yeah like I said very "Scarlet" like.

Dear everyone,

I'm a Chinese teacher specializing in Translation Studies. I have great interest in introducing classical Chinese poetry into the English world.

It's a great pleasure to be here as I can get in touch with so many poeple. I hope to exchange ideas with you about Chinese poetry and its translation.

As most of you are English natives, I hope to know your genuine ideas.

Thank you.

So, my introduction here will probably be highly inadiquit compared to those of others, but here I go at a first atempt.

I'm not really sure where i'd be as of ages, probably one of the younger people on here, as I am 15.
I was born, and have lived all my life so far in England, however have a fascination with other countries, America being my main focus.
I don't spend as much time reading as I would like, because I can't see, and this means not all books are available in either braille or audio format, but I get by with the books that are available. I use librivox a lot, because, although the books there are old, they provide equal, if not more enjoyment then books written today.

I have strong views on the world, humanity and how we function in societty as a whole. I don't expect people to agree with me, because I'm sure there's many people who I do not agree with. However, I am willing to share my views with people who will tell me there's in return.

I read a wide variety of books. Louisa May Alcott is my favourite author as far as fiction is concerned. There is a charm and appeal to her books that those written today sadly lack.

If I want slightly heavier reading material, that I can devote my focus too for a day I usually choose something like Emerson's essays. I find these interesting, as I can place them in to life, and understand how he wrote them. The topics they concern are a point of curiosity for me.

I have a strong fascination for poetry, I will read any form of poetry if it is presented to me in an agreeable format. I love to write it, however consider my writing inferior to the writing of those poets I love.

I'm willing to try any book, as long as I know that it will be worth my time. If i've never read a book by the particular author concerned, I will try my best to devote time to reading their books, as I believe I can never truly know if I will like a book until I give it a good try.

I have written rather a lot here, and as a first introduction I hope it is not too long and heavy. I'd like to talk to people, so feel free to message me at any time.

Holly.

Hello fellow Literature buffs wherever you are.
My name's Michael, I’m 49 and I live in Plymouth, UK.
This is my first Literature forum and I'm looking forward to many great discussions and posts on the site. I completed my Degree in Literature and Philosophy a good few years ago now. I had a fantastic time, probably enjoying it more because I was a mature student. In a perfect world I would still be there continuing to study now! The good thing about living in Plymouth is that I can take a good book, the dog and a picnic up onto Dartmoor and sit under a tree, or to the beach and sit on the sand in Cornwall. I'm hoping the upside to global warming is a little more sunshine instead of all the rain we seem to get here! My greatest love is my daughter Alexandra, 17 years old, and an avid reader of good literature herself. I also, in my spare time, enjoy rock climbing, mountain biking, little camping expeditions and the usual vices! At the moment I’m reading Doris Lessing’s ‘The Golden Notebook’, a nice easy read after my last one, Elliot’s ‘Middlemarch’. I noticed Doris Lessing’s not on the list of authors here, is the list ever expanded on the site? Well, I think it’s time for a chicken sandwich and a cup of tea in the garden now as the sun is actually shining at the moment! Bye for now, and happy reading everyone. :)

Hi as you can tell from my name I love Jane Austen and really mostly all the classic novels probably because of the language and detailed way they're all written. Anything inspired by or created on the basis of a classic novel and it will become my next obsession for the nect couple of months of my life. However, I dont really like "Frankenstein" and "Dracula" even thought I found the stories vaguely intruiging I didnt connect with any of the characters but now I'm rambling so I'll shut up.

I am also a huge fan of Hiroshige art and any art that is quirky, simple yet effective. I watch alot of period drama's, British comedy and Anime films and I am in love with the theatre.

And I'd just like to say Hi to everyone out there!

I am 63, soon-to-be 64, and am interested in all sorts of reading matter. I was an English Professor for two years while getting my Master's Degree in English (Writing). I especially like the works of Jorge Luis Borges, and the classical works of the Marx-Engels-Lenin-Mao School of Socialism. I am not a communist or a sympathizer with that school of thought, but I am a social-democrat. I look forward to some intellectual stimulation here in any field. Thanks for having me!

Hello everybody, It's nice that we are getting so many new forum members who share with us their precious views. There should be a place to introduce yourself and say hi; and this is it. :D

Come on and tell us about yourself. :D What are your hobbies? What are your favourite books? And also share with us everything else you would like to tell us about yourself.

Have a nice time browing the wonderful world of books and book-worms! :)

I am from Bangalore, India. I am currently doing Masters in English Literature and enjoying it completely. I want to become an author and therefore I think it's important to get the basics right and what better way than knowing how the legendary writers did it. That's why I am here to know more about literature that my course doesn't cover. BTW Pensive, that's my blogname. Although I am Pensieve (got inspired by Harry potter:blush:)

I'm really into horses, although I don't own one of my own currently. I LOVE acting, I've done alot of Shakespeare acting, and hope to continue. I recently competed in the National High School Shakespeare Acting Competition, and made it to semi-finals. I'll definitely be doing it next year again. Right now, with a local teen drama club, I am playing Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream. I am a Jesus-freak, I go to a non-denominational church. I'm homeschooled, and the oldest of five kids. Oh, and my best friend is my Great Dane, Roxy. Thanks!

Hi, my name is Craig, just saying hello. I'm into reading (!!!) I play guitar & bass in a band, I write songs, short stories, poetry(I try!) have 3 sons, I like making up little nuggets of wisdom: "Freedom is relative, to where you are now, in your mind".
Wrote on a toilet wall in Strangeways prison a LONG time ago. I am a recovering heroin addict, been clean for 9 years, I now try to help people who are where I once was. I ran a music workshop for people with special needs for 5 yrs in Sheffield. Unfortunately I had to move back to my home town for personal reasons & I really miss my people. I believe in peace, love & as somebody once said "Mankind's only hope for survival is co-operation" I say "So co-operate or die". As in evolve or become extinct, you know who you are, or rather, you don't! Ha! My tag, "kajacker" is derived from 'ka', meaning spirit or soul, & 'jacker', as in stealer, Soul Stealer! Anyway, enough of my ramblings, I'd be interested to see if anyone comments on this, or not. Love on ya XX

Moshu, did you know the way you spelled magick refers to its Occult status? Aleister Crowley uses it in his 'sexual magick' writings. I only mention it as you are a young Christian, as I am an older follower of His works, & others, I thought you would be interested. I think it is a beautiful way of spelling it, as it adds an air of mysticism. Good fortune on your journey through life. XX

Hi all. :D

I'm Jessie and I'm a college student majoring in Creative Writing. I'm currently working on my first novel and everything is going swimmingly. I have loved reading ever since I was little and writing has been my passion since I was 13. I'm a playwright as well, but I really want to be a novelist. Hopefully, I can get my work published. That would be amazing.

I have a blog. It's http://bookiewriter.blogspot.com! I chronicle my writing my first novel, and other subjects along the way.

Hey.

I'm eighteen and the poster child for literature geeks worldwide. Seriously, I read Shakespeare and Milton for fun. Other than that, I'm an artist, musician (trumpet, guitar, piano, and voice), writer, and actress. I guess you could say I'm pretty well-rounded, artisticly speaking. Other than that, I can't really think of much else to say.

Hi.

...

That's all you get.

>.>

No, I'm Stuart, 18. I study Scottish literature, English literature and History of Art at university.

My main interest aside from reading is music. I play the guitar. I play a lot of jazz/jazzfingerpicking stuff but I'm pretty happy playing most things. That said, i've never really gotten into metal and 'hard rock' and that whole side of music.

I'm also quite interested in art, Jackson Pollock being a particular favourite of mine. Also Rothko and Newman, Monet, Gaugin.

That's the idea of this thread you? hope so

I'll keep this short and sweet!

I'm Scottish and currently studing for my Masters in Literature and Film in Scotland.

The majority of my highschool education took place abroad, mainly Prague and Dubai, so I got the travel bug early on.

I was a professional ballet dancer and danced for several companies throughout Europe, however although I love dance I wanted something more from life, so here I am at Uni!

Music is my second passion in life, I'll listen to anything that's worth listening to, but essentially I'm a proud rocker. I love going to festivals and gigs, and have been lucky enough to meet a few of my musical idols. I'm pretty musical myself, playing piano, clarinet and bass guitar- I attempt to sing!

Literature has always been a part of my life. It can teach you so much about life that you yourself will never experience, plus it sparks and extreme amout of debate which is always great fun. I would have to say that Lolita and Mrs Dalloway are two of my top books, mostly due to the amount of thought they provoke and the conceptions they challenge. I'm also quite a big Graphic Novel fan, perhaps the genre isn't extremely notable, but I love the rawness of it.

I'm quite an arty type I guess, however I'm not one that likes something because I'm told that it's a great piece of art and therefore should find it spectatcular. I adore the 1950's pin up scene and Gil Elvgren. I also have a passion for the art and history of tattooing.

I'm pretty liberal and open-minded with the majority of things and respect people's opinions, however I will not be preached too.

Anyway, I'm bored of writing about myself to be honest, so I'll leave it at that!

Technically, I am a teacher of German and a lecturer in the history of the German language, at a university in the Land of Absurd, as I often call my country (that I actually love), but I am also a big fan of the English-speaking and especially English-writing world, which is why I am here.

Hi. I'm so glad I stumbled on this site. Everyone here sounds interesting I realy wish I could meet people like you out of the cyber world. Well... about me... I love reading(any book as long as its good), I write too and one of my dreams is to publish my own novel. For a person who reads alot I have extremly bad spelling, so bear with me please and meanwhile I'll try to improve.I also love history, music and musicals. What else? Oh I'm in highschool but I'm constantly reminded that I act way older;just today a friend commented that I talk of highschool students like I'm not one of them but a wise mature adult musing on the ways of children. I'm not sure if thats a good thing or not... I gues thats it. Later.

Howdy !

My nom de plume 'tailor STATELY' comes from an anti-spam prompt I came upon when registering on this forum... I kind'a like it. I've also 'borrowed' one of the smilies I've found in your forum that I took a shine to (smilie bashing computer monitor)... Cute!

I live in Cali up in the gold country of the Sierra Nevada Mountain foothills. I love nature, the countryside, and have fond memories of the ocean from my youth - to just about 20 some odd years ago. I yearn for the seashore.

I write poetry, but lack a certain polish from my five-or-so-years at poetry.com. You snicker... I heard you ! LOL, anyway... I'm one of those who whiled the hours away playing the "Poetry in Motion" 'tiles' to form a poem or some such; and plied an occasional Haiku to the æther.

So, I'm here to learn from the ground up ( my Newark High School English teacher, Ms. Korman, would be soooo proud ! ).

I leave you with one of my better "Poetry in Motion" entries as an offering of love:

Enchant Me...

Your very being
a desire for answer

Lament not
your unassailable
mystery

Enchant me with
your dreams

Lucky to have accidentally noted this site...Now I think itz time for an introduction.I have an M.phil in English language and literature and dream of taking a Ph.d in the same...An enthusiastic and energetic individual, with a passion for reading and discussing about literary matters with people with same interest, I am here. my hobbies include definitely reading, then browsing and after all these I love to enjoy the beauty of nature. The turning point in my life was my decision to do my post graduation in literatue after doing my graduation in science. Now realise it as my cup of tea...I prefer to read fictions and biographies. It is enough for now I think...more from me later...:)

Hello,
My name is Robin. I'm from Canada, I'm 21 and I'm female. I'm a student at the University of Alberta, but I'm not in any particular faculty or program yet because I like every subject except for math and I take a long time to decide anything. I'm one of those people who will have a lot of careers and professions before I die, because I can't decide on anything and I'm always discontent. I absolutely hate academic competition.
I don't believe in anyone's god, and I never will. I think its silly to speculate about religion because they all seem dubious.
I read a lot (like everyone here) and I ask a lot of questions. I know that I'd make a better scientist then anything else, but I sometimes find science heartless and far too competitive.
My grammar and vocabulary is usually pretty good, but I often have very poor spelling. Sometimes simple words seem to fall right out of my brain. I forgot how to spell the word "could" last week.
Anywho... I'm glad to have found this site. I used to post on another forum where I made a lot of friends, but one day it stopped existing.

Writing can be an excellent avocation for any active mind. And practical math is something that grows on you once you realize how much you sue it every day -- so don't worry about it as long as you stay in the Humanities and Liberal Arts.
Most of the purpose for academic math is to teach logic and linearity, which is always tough for a mental shotgun to handle. You might take a look at a couple of computer programming classes.

Spelling is important, but once again, not something to worry about in first drafts (draughts) ... and your language structure and grammar are outstanding You will probably find that your spelling becomes less automatic as your vocabulary expands, especially if you are a phonics-trained reader/writer. Most writers become compulsive editors of their own (and other's) work, but this is just part of the process. The biggest "burr under my saddle" is making sure I am saying exactly what I want the reader to "hear."

As to what you are going to do for the rest of your life, the only intelligent mandate is "live." For this the best starting point is answering, thoughtfully,
this question: "If money were no object, what is it I would like to do with my time." If your answer is reading and writing, become a teacher. If you love history, think about cultural anthropology. If you love the outdoors, think about geology or Earth Science. But if they all seem to fit, go back to being a researching writer.

Sorry about the length and intensity of this response, but I just can't quit teaching "outside the box."

Hi! I'm new to forums in general and since reading and writing are my first loves I thought I'd post a hello :) I'm 22 and I'm an English Student graduate who is pursuing creative writing...

Everyone seems so interesting that I might steal them for characters

I like reading everything and am open to suggestions (PS: Virgil, I love Byzantium, one of my favorites)

I'm Canadian and think much Canadian literature is underrated elsewhere, although every country has great fiction and poetry, so I am going to broadcast canadian literature as much as I can!

Its great to see so many students of literature here... learning is life no?

My name's Laura, 20, I'm from Ireland and I'm currently a student of English as part of my BA degree. I'm addicted to reading, the only time I don't have a book in front of me is when I'm online. But I believe that being either or both is something which is between you and God. The problem comes when you are tied to a Christian sect or congregation. Most of these preach that "they" are the only way to salvation.

If either one insists on their exclusivity (which true Buddhists will not because their quest is for the road to enlightenment), run in the other direction. Technically, Buddhism is not a theological philosophy but is much closed to Universalism.

~hello~ my name is melissa and i'm in ninth grade. i dislike capital letters.

i like to read. my favorite writers are james joyce, henry david thoreau, voltaire, virgil, virginia woolf, fyodor dostoevsky, albert camus, kurt vonnegut, john milton, marcel proust, dante alighieri, hermann hesse, a.a. milne, arthur rimbaud, charles baudelaire, jules laforgue, paul verlaine, walt whitman, hart crane, ogden nash, e.e. cummings, william shakespeare, rainer maria rilke, anne sexton, etc. i really really strongly dislike jane austen, ayn rand and robert frost.

Well guess what?
Yeah, I'm a newbie.

I inhabit that bit of rock at the edge of the Gulf Stream called England.
I am 37 Years old....but don't tell everyone please.

I have a very broad range reading spectrum and I read upto 5 different books a day. Each book being located in a different room of my home.
I even have a book in the WC....:lol::lol:

Downstairs I have the Life of Horatio Hornblower and a book by Douglas Reeman.
Upstairs I am reading The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich---which is one massive book--and the English Civil War.

I have been an avid reader since I retired 10 years ago and never seem to tire of new material. I constantly search local flee markets for books and made a great find 5 years ago when I was able to purchase all of Leo Kesslers short war stories at small cost.

I enjoy fiction or non fiction books relating to WW1 and WW2.

I even recently revisited my childhood when I chanced to find some original Ladybird early reading books, that brought back some memories for me I can tell you.

I enjoy reading in general and dependant on my mood enjoy books where I can actually visualise myself as being there in part with the story around me.

Well that is a slice of me.

Verity
06-03-2009, 11:58 PM
Hello, hello!

I must say, I am quite excited to be here- it looks like a great forum.
I have chosen to go by the name Verity whilst here. It's one of my favorite words, and something I strive to reach, in a philosophical sense.
I am seventeen years old and currently reside in the lower portion of the U.S. of A.
My greatest love in life is reading. I love books, I love the stories they have to tell. It is so marvelous that through literature we have voices from the past. People come and people go, but what they write down is permanent. It's wonderful.
Due to all of the above, I have a slightly unhealthy obsession with that heaven known as Half Price Books. I visit that store way more than the average person should.
Currently I am rereading The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. It's my summer project. I also hope to get through some psychology and philosophy texts.
Right. Well, outside of that, I love music (of all sorts), writing (though I must say I am not very good), nature, and movies.

I fear I've babbled on for much to long, so I shall end with that.

Hi, I am a writer, and I am currently writing for the site named estapo in the grotesque section (should be listed in my details as the home site), it is going to be a multi functional portal, but currently they have started from my book.
I am a writer, and this is a story about a man, a psychopath, who believes that he can cure the world with the help of people if they will accept his pain as the instrument of cleansing and will let him pass it on to them.
In the book I'm giving a reader a new look at the world through the eyes of a psycho, a man, for who there are no standards of thinking and there is no other belief except his own pain.

Sincerely Yours,

My favourites writers are: Bulgakov, Tolstoj, Dostoevskij, Doyle, Poe, Rowling and poets like Shakespeare, Wilde, Sepulveda, and many others.

Hi everyone:  this is the first time I have ever posted in any kind of forum. I have read for years but the authors are King, Deaver, Child, Cussler. these appear to be WAY under what the norm is for here. Philosophy is beyond me and Shakespeare is interesting but hard to understand. I am attending college here and really enjoy it. Finally learning to put the words on paper and have them make sense. Take care...

Hi there,
I'm in high school and I am taking a Literature course through the summer. I was given a topic as an introduction to the class, I was wondering if I could get some ideas about the meaning behind the quote. I've heard this quote many times but never really thought of any other meaning to it. The quote is "No man is an island." by John Donne.
I think that no one man can make it on his own, but I hardly think it is 2 page essay worthy! I could be wrong in my thinking.
Anyway thanks in advance for your help.

Disregard the "Help." I figured out how to post without losing my post. :-)

Hi. My name is Sandra. What a fabulous website this is. I just discovered it today. I can't wait to go through it later his evening.

I am Producing Artistic Director for a theater in Manhattan that dedicates itself to the new American playwright. I have 30 interns working at the theater for the summer, 10 of whom are literary interns. They have written short plays and the interns are going to produce a short play festival from those plays.

I also have my own literary not-for-profit which was just formed: Merit Theater and Film Group.
Merit Theater and Film Group, Inc. is a Theater and Film organization that helps theatrical and film artists develop their craft and present their work through developmental activities, readings, and/or full productions. We foster and cultivate personal growth for script writers and other theatre and film artists, which we believe is essential for writing and producing complex, knowledgeable scripts. Such works benefit the local and global community by enhancing self-realization, supporting peace and social justice, and building respect for cultural expression and identity.

One of our projects is the New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest which is accepting scripts through July 31, 2009. (revised from June 30) The contest seeks socially conscious scripts from around the world that not only entertain, but also foster new awareness .

I am an avid animal lover. If anyone knows of any great books about animals, please let me know. Two favorites are: Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog by Ted Kerasote. It's a true story of an amazing dog. Best dog book I have ever read. ... Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand. You will feel like you are on Seabiscuit, riding in the races that made him famous. Ms. Hillenbrand is a great writer. (The book is nothing like the movie.)

I hope to hear from you.

hi, i am not nearly half as interesting as most of those who have already written about themselves. me life has mainly taken me away from my passion of literature, but i read enough to keep it within my life still. i love any kind of book from old classics, such as the illiad which i am currently reading, to modern sci fi and EVERYTHING in between. in books i look for the story that pulls emotion from me, and i have found a few that make me laugh and cry. and those i read over and over. thats all i can really think of ... bye

Hi all - I thought I had posted to this but can't find it - duh! I'm a Creative Writing student, a poet, and I live in New Zealand. I read and write constantly; in fact I don't do much else - you would agree if you could see my house. Oh, I do make stained glass panels as well.

I'm on a sort of spiritual quest, as I think most writers are. And often take the wrong turning - but if I'm there it can't be wrong...I love to learn, and laugh, I enjoy good food and conversation, I drink - not always in moderation - and can be as silly or as serious as anyone else.

I think play is very important in creative work. I think too much, though.

Hope to run across you all while here.

Hi All,

Myself is Yogita and i reside in mumbai, india.I recently come to know about this forum and was very much pleased to know the existence of such wonderful community.Accidently only i come to know about this forum while searching for jane austen book for reading, as again started reading after a long gap of 6-7 years while i was in college.
So far i have read perry mason, charlotte bronte, pride and predudice, monsk who has sold his ferrari, wuthering heights only.
But as thought i do not find wuthering heights too much intresting its rather little boring at times.
could you please suggest some nice authors and books rather ebooks to be start with, i like charlotte bronte very much, it covers all the aspect of a life from isloation, hatred, love, sacrifice and everything , very nice and touchy.

I am really hopeful to encounter many other reading from several authors with all of your support and suggestion.

Thanks
Yogita
