What type of classical lit have you been reading?
Well I spent some time with a large collection of Poe's poems and other works. I read The Phantom Of The Opera -loved the musical, liked the book better- I have recently finished 1984 and loved it. Last, but not least, I read some Dr. Seuss' Wacky Wedensday - I feel it is a classic- Next I think I might try Dracula.

Do I dare?
I do like what I’ve seen of this forum and I do enjoy words and books and the reading of them.
So why not.
I didn't read much when I was in school and being a slow reader I'm still catching up.
I love books…I even read them sometimes. Always looking in thrift shops and flea markets. Anything that catches my eye…
…Even some obscure out of print book by an unknown author found in an old bookshop and you’re drawn in by the first few lines or the unusual artwork on the cover. So many worlds to discover and so many ways to get hooked…
I like poetry but I'm no intellectual I just enjoy the words/language/imagery, what it does to me inside.
Some authors that stay with me....
George Orwell, Dostoyevsky, Dylan Thomas, Wordsworth, Christina Rossetti. So many more but those are the standouts.
I admire Alexander Solzhenitsyn… Cancer Ward was a tough read but worth it.
Oh, and John Le Carre, thanks for Smiley (and for the cold!!).
I enjoy different cultures and meeting people from the far corners.
India has a special place in my heart.
Let’s hope that this is not just a flash in the pan. Only time and my resolve will tell!
Looking forward to more.

Hello All;
I have stumbled onto this forum in my never-ending search for beautiful poetry and interesting reading online. My user name is "Sojourner". I'm 59, male, and as my profile indicates, my non-cyber name is James.
My interests and "first love" tends to run toward 19 century poetry and visual art - but not always or exclusively, as I also very much like a lot of contemporary work as well. I have done quite a lot of painting myself on and off over the years since my early 20's. (My avatar is a painting of mine dating from 1974). I sometimes write poetry when my better judgement takes a backseat to the need to create a verse and/or express a passing notion... But I will do my best not to inflict it upon the unsuspecting and innocence here. I hope to find lots of delightful prose and poetry to read, and can't wait to see what treasures await me on this forum.
regards,
Sojourner

The last book I read was Cormac McCarthy's The Road, and it was pretty harrowing but ultimately very satisfying. I'd love to start a discussion about it.

Hi Satori;
Just joined the forum myself, but wanted to mention that Cormac McCarthy is one of my favorite writers as well. I can't discuss "The Road" with you because I didn't know it was out, and thus haven't read it yet. (I'm assuming it is a new release). McCarthy won me over with "Suttree", "All the Pretty Horses", "The Crossing", and "Cities of the Plains"... "The Crossing" being my most favorite of them all, I think.
Anyway, Thank you for the heads up regarding "The Road". I'll be on the look out for it.
regards,
Sojourner

Hi out there. I'm also new to the forums- I came across the website looking for some additional poiuntf of view for the seminar I was preparing on Heart of Darkness and liked the look of things.

I'm 17, from just outside of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I love reading and writing (I suppose that's kind of redundant), as well as other stuff. I have a pretty varied taste in authors, so I'm hoping to hear many a point of view on a little bit of everything. That, and I love a good arguement, sorry, siscussion, and what better is there to discuss than literature?

Lokking forward to hearing from everyone.

Hello everyone. I'm from the DC area although currently in school elsewhere. I study biochemistry for the sake of practicality and enjoy it however my passion is literature.
My favorite authors are Charlotte Bronte, Alexander Dumas, Jane Austen, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Louisa May Alcott and the list goes on. I love to read and write, I play trombone and piano, I knit and I'm learning Irish Dance.
I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Hey, I am an almost 18 year old who is in a constant battle of childhood vs. youth vs. the approaching adulthood. In a sense I am all three, you'll catch me coming back from a party and turning on chipndales rescue rangers followed by a biography of JFK. An odd combination but its fun. I'll be attending university this fall (u of t likely) majoring in something science related (not confident enough to declare yet). That's all I'll say for now. I can't disclose any more personal information as if my friends found out that I am on here um, well, lets just say they are typical literature-hating teenagers.

Hey =]]

Well I'm UK based, and am a sporty person. In my spare time, I mainly exercise/compete my and other peoples horses, but I do go running in the mornings.
I used to ride pillion on a motorbike, but an accident a year ago halted that [I haven't been allowed back on]. I dislocated my collar bone [sternoclavicular joint], knee, and have been having shoulder, hip, knee, back and neck problems since. Thus why I run - it keeps my knee slightly more in shape xD
I took my GCSE options, and chose French, drama, textiles and history, on top of the basic subjects [math, english, sciences etc]
I intend to study Forensic Pathology at university, with a gap year to focus on my riding.
I hope to be selected for the olympics [we can all dream, right?] but will settle for Europeans.

That's all about me really, any more questions, ask =]
xx

Hi!
I have no idea what to write about myself....ummm... I'm very sarcastic and I have a whole buncha hobbies. To name a few I like reading (never without a good book), art (I keep a drawing pad and pencils in my purse), writing (oh the joy!), dancing ( I want to do ballroom dancing... oh how I wish *sigh*), annoying friends with my constant talking, and reading (did I mention that already?). I LOVE horses and hiking but ever since I moved to Cali I have been unable to either ride horses or go hiking )^:
I'm a high school student and plan to become a middle school art teacher when I get older. I was born and raised in California up till about three and a half years ago when I moved to Kentucky for three years and found out that I am a country girl in heart. I moved back to Cali this year before school started ( literally a day before freshman orientation, a week before school started) and found that am definitely not a city girl. I love rolling hill and ride spaces and hat being able to touch the next door neighbors house when I reach out my window. Well, anywho, that's pretty much me in a nutshell.
Oh yah ,I came here on a friends recommendation and am a complete newbie. (^:

Hey Everyone!
I'm new to the forums part of this site, although I have been using the literature part of this site for quite some time. Well, about me.... I'm Canadian(you may not know this, but we actually do NOT live in igloos and I don't have a polar bear as a pet...), and I joined because I wanted some advice on books to read. Another reason I joined is because I want to meet others with a passion for the written word, like me! Most people around me don't take me(a highschool student) seriously when I talk about this subject, and they laugh when I express my disgust over only getting to read around 3 books a week because of my busy schedule. They do not understand that this is important to me, and everyone makes time for the things that are important to them!!!
Well i won't bore you with any more details of my otherwise boring life!

Just thought I'd say hello and thanks for putting together a literature forum. Who'd have thought the internet could be so interesting! Here's my brief introduction:

I'm a Londoner but live in rural west Wales, and enjoy most forms of literature. I write some poetry and short stories, and non-fiction articles, and I'm currently researching a phd in English Renaissance poetry at the University of Wales, looking particularly into the sonnet and it's representation of the self and consciousness.

I also have interests in Milton, the English Victorian novel, and the Romantic period, particulalry Blake and Wordsworth.

Hope to make some contributions to our discussions.

Hi, I'm new to the literature network; I enjoyed taking the quizzes and reading a few of the posts. I'm looking forward to some interesting conversations. My avatar is a sternwheeler because I am obsessed with the history of Western Canada {my home and native land]. In particular the history of the era of rail construction, and during this period sternwheelers played a huge role.
I love reading, of course or I wouldn't be here.

Hi! Lyn, older than I wish I was, Scottish living in England. I love early sci fi, the classics, poetry. I went to uni in Scotland and studied Scottish Literature and pscyhology. I'm really interested when the two topics meet, so love psychological novels. No-one around me reads..... I need someone to talk to about books so was totally chuffed when I found this site!

DID SOMEONE SAY SCI-FI?! Even better, early sci fi.

Aw, I know how you feel about feeling left out because no one around you reads. In fact, probably most of us can empathize with you. Well, this is Lit Net, so you won't feel left out here!

So, all in all, hello and welcome!

Hi. I'm Joey, also from that infamous land of corn, Indiana. I can empathize with you as well, Lyn. No one that I am around outside of my lit. classes reads as I do. It can be kind of depressing. I'm reading Blake and Wordsworth right now, but I prefer early modern novels. Also classical Greek and Roman along with some Germanic folklore. Thanx for the forum!

Its so good to find folks that sympathise. One of my work collegues said to me the other day, 'What you actually go home, pick up a book and read poems for fun????' in an incredulous tone of voice. Yes, yes I do. Am slightly scared that someone thinks that's weird. Forums like these are good because there's bound to be someone who's read at least one of the books I witter on about. Currently reading Valis by Phillip K Dick. I've recently been converted to the wonders of sciffy, having been a die hard classicist before. I didn't realise how diverse the genre was. I love anything that messes with me head and makes me think.

Early sci-fi? How early is early sci-fi?

Even if you like Dostoevsky more than Le Guin (which is sacrilege in my world :|), welcome aboard. :) There are few novels trippier than Dick's stuff and Valis is probably the trippiest of 'em all.

Ray Bradbury. :)

Lyn

I'll definitely have a look at Bradbury again. By early I just mean I tried to start with the 'classics' whatever they might be. So HG Wells, Huxley. I love the scifi masterworks series, Fahrenheit 451, Behold the man, Dancers at the end of time, Man Plus, Flowers for Algernon, More than Human, Shrinking Man, I am Legend, PKD, etc. I haven't tried Arthur C Clarke yet, should I bother? Sorry bout Dostoevsky. Tis the fault of my indoctrination by my hideously prejudiced education. And I read the Double which is just weirdly brilliant. Im trying to broaden me horizons. Got any more recommendations of classic, decent, scifi?

Lyn,

Sure, I happen to love sci-fi and the more sf fans, the merrier.

Frederik Pohl's 'Gateway,' Hal Clement's 'Mission of Gravity,' Frank Herbert's 'Dune,' Arthur C. Clarke's '2001: A Space Odyssey', 'Rendezvous with Rama,' and 'Childhood's End,' Ursula Le Guin's 'The Left Hand of Darkness,' and 'The Dispossessed,' Robert Silverberg's 'Dying Inside,' and 'The Book of Skulls,' George Stewart's 'Earth Abides,' John Wyndham's 'The Day of the Triffids,' and 'The Chrysalids,' Walter M. Miller's 'A Canticle for Leibowitz,' Alfred Bester's 'The Stars My Destination,' and Thomas Disch's 'Camp Concentration,' are all excellent novels in their own way.

As far as short stories go, and it can be argued that a well written sf short story is often more effective and spectecular than a full blown novel, anything by James P. Tiptree, Cordwainer Smith, Clifford Simak, Theodore Sturgeon and Harlan Ellison's early is worth reading. The first two and Sturgeon is particular are unrivalled in the craft of short story IMO.
Some less well known, but almost equally good in many cases, names are Tom Reamy, Norman Spinard, Jack Vance, Fritz Leiber and Brian Aldiss.

If I were asked to recommend one, and only one, sf author I'd put up Le Guin's name.

Ruth?

Hi, my name's Ruth, I'm 16, land live in Reading (40miles from London in England)

I'm quite intimadated by the amount of posts on here, but I'm glad aswell! I was looking for a literature forum and this came up on Google

Ohh, where to start about me...Well, I'm in 6th Form at school, taking Englsih Literature, Theatre Studies, Economics and History for my AS levels. I'm also currently attempting to decide what on earth to do at university!

I love reading, and after my exceptionall inspiring teacher for GCSE, adore Hardy. I also love Orwell, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Terry Pratchett and various other books and authors. Poetry isn't so much my cup of tea, but I adore Havisham by Carrol Ann Duffy, Prayer Before Birth by Louis MacNeice and the T.S.Eliot that I've read. I love going to the theatre-Shakespeare, Brect, Physical theatre pieces, musicals, anything!

Aside from that I also love music; I've had singing lesons for years, sing in a county choir, help run a samba band at school and listen to most genres, though I particaully love Antony and the Johnsons, Kate Bush, Evanescence, Biffy Clyro, System of a Down and Peer Gynt By Greig.

I also play rugby, both for Reading U17's and Berkshire, and belong to an amateur theatre, where we're doing Calamity Jane this year.

The thing which gets to me most is the state of the world; I hate how mush the human race has done to destroy it, and how even now it might be too late to halt the damage. I suppose reading might be considered a form of escapism for me...

I'd love to get really involved on this forum, as you all seem like really interesting people, and just generally I love discussing things I've read and getting tips for items to add to my frowing list of 'want to read'.

Oh, and I apologise in advance for my atrocious spelling-I will try to keep it in check!

Hello everyone, Happy Tuesday!

This is my first time on this site, so let me introduce myself.

I am 22 years old, originally from Romania, moved to Florida when I was a little girl, now I reside in Las Vegas. I feel in love with the classics when I first read Plato in the 6th grade. I am working towards a degree in History and hope to get a Masters in Literature.

Looking forward to reading more on the posts.

My name is Debbie,
I am a mom of four children ages 17, 15 (twins) and a 12 year old. I have been married to the world's best husband for over 18 years. I love to read, and my favorites are the mostly the 19th century authors such as Alcott, Stowe, Tolstoy, Anthony Trollope, Jane Austen, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and the list goes on. I have my own personal library of over 300 books-all of which I intend to read if I keep at it! I also like to cook, paint (when I can!) and look for clearance racks at the stores... :yawnb: I don't go anywhere where I will be sitting for long without a book!"As for George Washington's fortunate lack of children, if he has none to give him pain, then he has none to give him pleasure..." Hello everyone. I was pointed in this direction by a very pushy bulletin at the top of every page that reminded me of my posting neglect. If only I had such a bulletin to follow me in the real world, reminding me to pay bills, take out the garbage, call my mother, and pay attention to boys...

Anyway, my name is Amanda. 'Anda is a nickname I earned a few years ago after my friends grew tired of coming up with qualifiers for the multitudes of Amandas that kept cropping up in the 90s (being 5'8", "Big Amanda" had to be avoided at all costs).

I am 25, and I have lived in 20 homes. Apparently I inherited my parents' wanderlust; most of my adult life has been devoted to working only hard enough to earn travel money and to meet future couch-surfing sponsors. I try to visit a new place in the United States and a new country abroad every year. So far I've been to Ireland, England, Italy, Israel, Spain, Wales, Colorado, California, Louisiana, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania.

I started college in 1999, studying Graphic Design. As a student I was successful. As a happy person, I was completely miserable. After two years I left, and in the four years that followed, I moved around in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island, working for Greenpeace and summer camps. Two years ago I returned to school as a Literature major. I graduate in May. I'm gagging for the cap and gown.

After graduation I'm quitting my job, packing up my house, and moving to Argentina to be an English teacher for a year. I need a break before I continue my education god-knows-where. There just hasn't been time to get through the Norton Anthologies, take the GREs, get my TEFL certification, ace the subject GREs, complete my 16 credits, and get through my 40-hour work week, while maintaining my social life and my travel habit.

But the future awaits. And it looks bright from here.

03-07-2007, 09:33 AM
I'm Petra Wiggin. For those of you who have read Orson Scott Card, you will get my name. For those who haven't, I'll explain if you want. Um . . . I love to read. Like, LOVE, to read. I have read everyday since I was nine, and before that I would pretend I read everyday. I have read everything from the Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot to Les Miserables by Victor Hugo (the condensed version, something about cutting out the parts where he spends fifteen pages mooning over the sunset). I love to write as well, though that comes much harder. I have been trying to write a book since I was nine, and have only gotten to the eleventh chapter -- once. It is hard. I don't think that, or aspire to, write the "American Masterpiece",but I don't want to write a book I do not love. Does that sound strange? And besides, I like almost every genre, so I can't decide what I want to write.
Mhmmm, anything else . . .
Ilove movies as well. Almost all kinds ecxept horror, hard-core war, and porn;) I love fantasy, sci-fi, and classic/period movies, especially when it is all combined.
I have very strong opinions. I'm not afraid ti say them. But I do not likehurting people with my opinions, though I don't mind offending them. I know, just a little paradoxical.
Thats all I'm going to say for now. Nice to meet you guys, and I hope I can become an integeral part of this community. Write to you later . . . bye!:alien:

Currently reading The Innocent by Harlen Coben and love it. Pretty good, almost finished with it. What's your favorite book Dave from California?

1984, Frankenstein, and Brave New World are excellent books. Newer books I really enjoyed were Brooks' World War Z. But I can't truly say and I would probably rank lower on mileage than most on this site.

M.R. James and H.P. Lovecraft are old standbyes and personal favorites.

Hello to all. Started to make my first post in the general section, but I saw the suggestion for intros ... so here I am.

Favorites - I always seem to end up back where I started, which was grabbing books off shelves in my Dad's collections, sticking mostly to "manly adventures in the wild." - London, Kipling, Service, Scott, plus "pulp" stuff like R.E. Howard, MacLain, etc.

Back into Reading - After many years of being "too busy to read," I'm trying to relocate that kid who used to read so much he'd walk home from school reading a book and walking at the same time. I'm not that bad anymore, but my latest gig is trying to chip away at some of the "great book lists" or "top 100 lists."

I just got done with ... Wuthering Heights, Light in August
Now I'm reading ... Anna Karenina, with Ivanhoe on deck (unless he gets replaced by your April book of the month ...)

Other hobbies & work - I edit and write for a living at present. I'm in Iraq and spend about half of my day editing and re-working/writing award narratives for my fellow Marines (Bronze Stars and other commendation medals ...).

That's me! Ma'asalam ...

Hi,
Am a 24 yr old writer living in new delhi, india. just got this job in this town. thats right, am in a new town after a rather idylic childhood in goa. frankly, am a little inundated by the density of the threads posted here. dunno if im feeling like polishing my two cents right now. most of what i read was in my inglis bachelors. then i did some freewheel travelling and a few albums later, i was here. tell you the truth, i'm more interested in original writing and than discussing what happened to others. originality is not new, or so i believe. just that the numbers have their own identity besides their individuality. so i struggle on against the onslaught of life, idea and emotion (l.i.e) driven by some pecularities of my own.

Hi Blue. Welcome !

Dont be confused, you just need to figure out which area you want to focus on. If you have a story to tell there's a forum for it, similarly for poetry, religion and philisophy, or some discussion on specific author, there is a whole lot of books that are availabel online for reading, and if you want some light chat, there's the General chat forum. There is a Book Club too, when you can see which is the current read. There are discussions on that book, etc. You can start your own thread or you can also take part in and existing one if you want to contribute to the main theme of the topic. There's a lot that you can do here.

Just browse around and feel comfortable. :)

Btw, I am from Delhi too :D :D

A few quick jottings about myself. 29-year-old, Danish, writing thesis on Margaret Atwood - primarily focussing on her 2003 dystopia "Oryx and Crake".

I hope I will get to discuss all and sundry stuff with a lot of interesting people with winding and inquisitive minds.

I would also like start off by quoting Lewis Hyde from his book "The Gift" (p. 252) - a quote to encourage both people doing critical detective work and people writing literature:

”In a Hermetic mood we will make a hundred intellectual connections only to find, when we check them with a less restless god [e.g. Apollo], that ninety-nine of them are useless”.

Give it up for Hermes.

Hello everyone, I stumbled across this forum a while ago and have decided to finally show the courtesy of registering :D

I've recently gotten back into the pleasure of reading, after somewhat of an abstinance from any good literature (I can only claim I was possessed by the devil himself, shame on me.. ) but alas, I've found my senses and come running back once more.. so I've a lot of catching up to do and being but a mere young'un at seventeen I've already found so many great books I'm dying to get my teeth into, but am lacking the sufficent time to get through 'um all!
Gladly up for the task though and consequently you'll find me with my head stuck in a book at almost every spare moment, ahh it is good indeed to be back.

Currently reading Wuthering Heights, Crime and Punishment, The Red and the Black (almost finished this one now) and as if I haven't overloaded myself already.. a little slice of some Thoreau and Emerson :)

Oh, and while I'm at it.. a very happy humpday to you all, my fellow bookwormies.

Obviously, like so many of you here, I like reading and am trying to find more time to read. Currently, I'm reading The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and C.S. Hello everyone. I've been checking out these forums for quite sometime and finally decided to register. I'm currently living in Lansing, MI but hoping to move far, far away once i finish my undergrad. I havent had much time to read anything but textbooks and the occaisional ethnography for class since highschool but id like to get back into it. Fav authors would probably Bierce and Stapledon, but that has been known to change depending on my mood.

I'm also big on films. I used to be a film major for about a year so I know a ton of really obscure artistic/independent/foreign/silent movies. Done some photography as well. Somehow this has officially become the longest introduction i have ever given for myself, so i shall end it promptly.

I look forward to meeting you all.

Hi Everyone

Just a quick greeting to all of you:thumbs_up

I have just finished reading 'A Tale of Two Cities' by Charles Dickens and have started 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte. Both are wonderful.

So far in 2007 I have read...

Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion

Jean-Jacques Rousseau - Discourse on the Origin of Inequality

Jean-Jacques Rousseau - Reveries of the Solitary Walker

Henry David Thoreau - Civil Disobedience

Gandhi - Autobiography

Charles Dickens - A Tale of Two Cities

Does anyone else feel that they have so much to read but on so little time?:bawling:

Absolutely, and along with too little time also too little cash. The books I am mostly seeking are often aren't in print anymore and rarely offered in the local libraries and if they are they're dubiously missing from the shelves.

And the internet is a powerful opiate for timewasting. Some one please pry me from this accursed thing.

So hi, my names Jade.
I've been searching for a decent poetry forum for ever. Ok, thats a lie. I've only been looking tonight, but I went through a million different sites, so that counts as forever. Anyway, so came accross this one. It looks pretty cool. Only browsed for a second, but I managed to find my way around easily, which was not the case with the others :p Got lost pretty easily on other sites.

Um. I write poetry, and stories. The stories I usually keep to myself though.
But yeah.
Forgive me, but I might not be so active. I'll try my best though. :D

I dont read poetry books much.. Or ever infact. I dont really read poetry, but I try giving feed sometimes.
Anyway, thats me, for now.
Got any questions, just ask. :)

Hello to all. I have been posting like crazy for the last few days, enjoying this forum very much. This is the coolest place, so full of information, wit, interesting posts, nice helpful people, the list goes on.

My writer's name is Karalynne Ducharme, though this is not to imply that I have done any publishing, etc. That is just the name that I go by on the 'net. I use Kiz_Paws cuz I thought it was a catchy take on my real name, and the paws thing is, naturally, a reflection of my absolute love for animals.

My avatar is that of Jean Harlow. I chose that because my hubby and I went to a costume party once and I dressed up in the style of Harlow, and I really loved it. What a glamor style back then...

I play piano, at a moderate to advanced level, depending on the day (grrr!). I really love the Ballades of Chopin, but as well, his Nocturnes and Waltz.

I am a softy -- if I hear touching music, you will see a tear in my eye. If someone is downtrodden, their story grips my heart and I want to fight for them. I get quite caught up in movies, even though I try to just be a spectatre (sp).

I have a love for languages, English is my first language, but I am not too shabby in French, and I have taken a year of Icelandic studies (still suck at that, mind you, lol!)

I am a health-nut, as proclaimed by my family, and try to keep an eye on my diet (though I do worship the cacao plant, lol).

I am married and because I often feel that my better half doesn't understand my thought processes, I refer to him as the Linear Thinker. We have this joke about it, and perhaps it is a little snide of me, but anyhow, he's ying and I'm yang in this chapter of life...

I would love to post a picture of me and my pup, Pepper, but I have not grasped the how-to's yet ... don't worry, it will come. But a mental image? Well, I am 5'3", petite in build, and have blonde hair. I laugh a lot, cuz they say that laughing will make you live longer (and it is a whole lot more fun to go through life this way).

Pepper is a miniature schnauzer, all black, with perky ears and a nubbed tail (dang those breeders and this clipping business...). She never leaves my side when I am at home, which can be annoying when I attempt to pretend that I can cook (another story, lol). Despite this fact, when I try to cuddle my dog, she is aloof and standoffish -- as far as dogs behave this way.... I don't know why she is like this, and I steal hugs and kisses from her anyhow. But it is funny because when I pick her up off the ground (an absolutely forbidden thing for her to endure in her way of thinking), when I place her back on the ground, I have to 'pay her' by means of a carrot coin (that is the 'treat' that she gets, because too many dog treats make dogs chubby, which means a shorter life, and all that jazz). I have never met a dog that quite has the same expectations for apples and carrots that mine has.

All right, I am off on the pet tangent, sorry! Hope that this intro gives some insight into my world, thanks for this opportunity!

Karalynne (Kiz_paws)

i guess it's only proper that i put something here....but i'm horrible at introductions.

i'm from the northshore, massachusetts. i moved to paris a little over a year ago to further my studies. my french is still terrible. i'm not sure how long i'll continue to stay in paris because i feel like i'm maxing out on what it has to offer at the moment. i'm dreaming of england instead.

i basically have a split personality when it comes to literature - i love the classics and their poetic, flowery sentences (henry james, bronte sisters, dickens, etc) but i also love the harsh, minimalist styles of contemporary writers (palahniuk, vonnegut, salinger, etc). it totally depends on what mood i'm in. i'm also beginning to get introduced to literature from the beat era which i find interesting as well (although really depressing after reading it consecutively for awhile).

hmmm...what else to reveal? i spend a lot of time browsing in the dozen or so little english bookstores here and i buy way too many books than i could ever have time to read. i go to the theater frequently, although since my french is still horrific, i can't understand what they're saying half the time. i love classic movies from the golden hollywood period up to the 60s. in my "spare time" (haha), i play around with cameras and attempt to do some photography. i also paint but i'm not too good at that either.

i'm glad to have found this forum because you all seem to be a great group of people. i'm looking forward to discussing books (and other things) with everyone. if anyone lives nearby (or in the UK) and wants to get together for coffee or tea, i'll up be up for that. well, i'll be visiting the UK sometime this year i think so it'll be nice to meet people from there.

Hello Booksandtea! It was nice to meet you, and look forward to having great conversations with you and everyone else. You and I share a love for Wilde and Hesse, though for Wilde, I have only yet read The Portrait of Dorian Grey.
What was your favorite Hesse novel? (I can never decide between The Steppenwolf or Siddhartha) Presently I am reading Pictor's Metamorphoses and Other Fantasies and will get to The Glass Bead Game. (hmm, you can easily see which author I idolize, lol)

Anyhow take care, and fear not for the French language, it will come quickly because you are very immersed in it (I am jealous, but in a good way). :)

Hello, Lit Lovers!
I'm new here and will be sharing my experience with new authors, etc. Haven't read many classic books in my 51 years, but am looking forward to "settling down" and learning from all of you. A friend recently read my book manuscript I'm working on, and suggested I should become familiar with Tolstoy's short stories. Well, I did a search for him online and found your forum! So, if anyone has experience with dear Leo and wants to recommend a place for me to start, lemme know, okay?

For now, thanks for being there, and I look forward to reading and posting here from time to time!

Blessings!

Hello everyone,
Discovered the site a while back but only recently noticed the forums. Currently living in the UK, desperate to travel and see the world. Love reading - as I suppose does everyone else here - although I have a very haphazard way about it in that I'll devour book after book for a while, and then read nothing at all sometimes... My favourite writers are Edith Wharton, George Eliot, Louisa May Alcott, J. D. Salinger, John Steinbeck, Albert Camus, Joseph Heller, E. M. Forester, Haruki Maurakami, Tennessee Williams, Henrik Ibsen and Arthur Miller. I also like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jane Austen, P. G. Wodehouse, Henry Miller, Graham Greene, Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, etc., etc.
So many books I have yet to read and not sure how I will ever get through them all!

I just recently discovered Miss Juliette Faraone, a fabulously talented young girl who one day will recognized.

See for yourself;

"What is Truth"

He speaks from depths that none have seen.
None come this far, the calm serene.

The peace that greets all at the gate,
The want and hope to meet one's fate.

For more than truth has he to gain.
Forsakes his own for victory's pain.

To bear the burden of grim defeat,
Would you think life be near so sweet?

Or dare one man in realms below
Think of death as life's mere foe?

For beyond that rightly simple ruse,
There stands in deep and dank sinews

A greater peace than life could find;
Unlock the mysteries of the mind.

Slowly now, take the reaper's hand,
and step into a better land.

Traipse just once through this abyss.
Fear no wrath; seek only bliss.

One needs look up to hear, he thought,
Of what was ill and what was wrought.

To gather oneself together again
The doer must be only inches from vain.

For prejudice comes as tolerance goes,
Misusing one's mind strikes fatal blows.

Wipes out mankind and lingers not.
Strikes the deed from the boiling pot,

The vat of instances, ne'er do wells
Shall think of love as hatred swells;

Its chamber filled, its torch unmasked,
Glory-spun and beauty-basked.

Do to me as the latter may heed.
Again, to traipse is not misdeed.

This is my own, from a few days ago;

The Word Friend

When I think of you, I think of the word friend

Because you are real, never having to pretend

Never discarding me like I was the next trend

Whenever I get into trouble, you always defend

When I need some help, a hand you will lend

You speak in a way, never having to condescend

Not ever using words I can't really comprehend

You know what it takes for my feelings to mend

You don't need to say sorry to make an amend

Throughout everything that we've had to contend

I know you're there, your strength will never bend

When my heart is low with no more to extend

You take my hand and to the heavens we'll ascend

You give me your strength as both our spirits blend

Gently and slowly, together both of us descend

I'm so very happy that you chose me to befriend

I know that you'll be with me until the very end

Thank You, Friend

I'm Sam, from Australia... How I long to leave this place.
Anyway, I'm the Shakespearey / Oscar Wilde type (Shakespearey?) and I joined to expand my diminutive knowledge of literature.. and perhaps to hear suggestions of great reads, so on. I also may be secretly hoping that some of this intelligence and eloquence may rub off on me.

Hi everybody.
I just joined this forum and excited to read the discussions. Some of my favorite books are Sun Also Rises, 100 Years of Solitude, Wuthering Heights, To Kill a Mockingbird, Jesus' Son, to name a few. I am about to start reading Brothers Karamazov this week.

Greetings! :)

Just want to say hi! and that I'm happy to be here!

Coincidentally, I've started the Brothers Karamazov and am finding it to
be quite interesting. In fact, I like Russian literature very much.

I still have sooo much to read. However, I'm happy to be a member here
so I can receive some insight on many great works; insight I would
never be able to receive on my own.

Take care folks and ciao for now! ;)

Hello everyone,
My name's Susana, I'm 17 (18 in fifteen days, actually), born and living in Lisboa, Portugal.
At the moment I am really into portuguese poetry (to name a few: Fernando Pessoa, Nuno Júdice, António Ramos Rosa, Al Berto, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen).

Now, favourite books (the hardest part)... I'll just name some books which I had real pleasure reading, don't really like to pick "all time favourites" - at least not at my age, when I still have so much to read...

1984 - George Orwell
The Perfume - Patrick Süskind
The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Milan Kundera
The Waves - Virginia Woolf
The Process - Franz Kafka

(Short Stories and stuff)
Three Stories and a Reflection - Patrick Süskind
White Nights - Fyodor Dostoevsky
The Pit and the Pendulum - Edgar Allan Poe
London - Virginia Woolf

:)

Hello :)
My name's Heike. I've already made a few posts here but I figured I should stop hiding in the shadows!

I'm not sure how much I stack up age-wise here (I'm 17). I'm going to New York University in the fall.

I am sure I share a passion with everyone here for reading. I'm reading The Brothers Karamazov right now, and plan on starting Anna Karenina soon (Russian kick anyone?). I also love poetry--T.S. Eliot and e.e. cummings are among my favorites. I can't possibly make a list of my favorite books though! You'll just have to get to know the millions of them one at a time ;]

I loved the Brothers Karamazov. In fact, I would call it one of my favorite books...however there are many books on that list :p Welcome the forums anyway! I am just back on the forums after a long absence and it's good to be back. I'm hoping that I will be able to drop by more often now that I am not so busy. Again welcome to the forums and happy reading!;)

Hello everyone. I've finally gathered the courage to post here! :P Surprisingly, my real name is Laurette, I'm a 19 year old South African. I'm rather into English literature at the moment. All those 19th century authors, ya know? ;)

I can't for the life of me say who's my favourite author, or book. I'm pretty con-committal, I guess. I find it rather restrictive to have to decide on a favourite. (Can't even decide on a style... ) Although, at the moment at least, my favourite poem is Ulysses by Alfred Lord Tennyson. There's such a wonderful energy to it!

Hey Khanyi! It's so good to see another South African here! Yay!

Hello, My name is Theodore (the real one) lots of people call me dore, so I figured what's the most beautiful word in the English language?...Cellar door (ok, that's two words, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but humor me) or Cellar Dore.
So I am Cellar Dore, but you can call me Dore if you like.

Oh, hello up there, I just read Brothers Karamazov a couple months ago--great book.
I had to read a couple reviews/commentaries (that's actually how I came across this cite!) on it to really appreciate its true depth--especially on chapters like the Grand Inquisitor--I didn't realize some of the deeper metaphors until after I had read it.

See you all around.

Dore

Hello, Mr. Dore! Glad to have you here. :) That's a very interesting story you have there about your username.

I haven't read much of the Russian classics yet, I'm too much into Dickens and classic sci-fi right now! I have read Crime and Punishment, though. Excellent book. My dad says that the sci-fi classics aren't worth reading. Well a big >: p to him. This isn't the place to talk about that, however.

Anyways, welcome to all!

It's so interesting how many people have read Crime and Punishment and haven't read Brothers Karamazov, which is better, in my opinion; and in many others also.

Hello, everybody! :p

I'm not a native speaker either, but I've been studying English for several years. I'm from Brazil, and my mother tongue is Portuguese.

I love literature, and that's why I'm here. Two of my favorite books are Pride and Prejudice and Lord of the Rings. I also like some Brazilian writers (Machado de Assis and José de Alencar, for example), but I think most of you have never heard of them.

Actually, when it comes to books, I like reading all kinds of things, from classics to best-sellers. :D

Good Evening. I am a student who is critical of America's public schools, yet continues his memberships at these establishments. I just refound this site after, having used the information on it to write a report on Macbeth, returned to find that I could read entire books on here. I like the pseudonym Dante Wodehouse because it shows two completely opposite authors who both are really cool. I like my anonymity and retaining modesty ("Who likes a braggart, however honest they be?" I say to myself), so I will say nothing more about myself.

Hello All, I am of course new to the Forum. I happen to have found this web-site a couple of days ago, looking for information on Jack London. I had just finished Sea Wolf earlier this week and was looking for more of his work. I decided to start reading Mutiny of the Elsinore, and finished it in 2 days. I am excited about reading more!!!!!!

Hello

Introductions have always been difficult for me, I don't know what to put or how to organize it. I afraid of sounding dumb or making grammatical and syntactic mistakes. Truth is that I am not a good at writing, I had never been (probably will never be). My thing is painting. Still, below it, are books. I adore reading. I read everything, from graffiti in public toilets (it's pretty cool) to advertisements on the street. I am currently very attracted by the 19 century, Becquer, Poe and Tolstoy (specially the first one).

My other passion are films (I considered once in becoming a film director), lately Chinese cinema, Music ( Chopin and Queen) and languages. I started a month ago mandarin.

I could add a few more things..but I'm tired. I hope to meet people that share my love for books like I do( In fact...thats the reason why i joined this forum, because the people I know hate reading) and I guess I'll you all around. Bye.

Hi,

After too many years of unfulfilling office work I decided to return to school to follow what I am passionate about - literature. I found this site looking to confirm some poetry analysis.

For a person who loves words, finding the right ones to talk about myself is a bit tough.

I love this idea of a totally bookish forum.

Hello all! I am a 15 year old high school student. I just joined yesterday and I don't know where to begin. As you can probably tell from my username, I love British literature! I also enjoy reading philosophy, fantasy, and science fiction. I am an all around bibliophile, however (lol I should have to say most people on here are). I enjoy reading in English and French and I hope to be proficient enough in Latin/Greek, so as to read in those languages. I love listening to Classical music, Jazz, and Broadway music and I have been playing the violin for about 7 years and piano for about 2 years. I also love dancing, singing, and acting and playing chess! I hope this suffices as an introduction, and I hope to start posting soon. Nice to meet you all! P.S. I enjoy maths and sciences, too.

Hullo. I'm 14-years-old and a freshman who just found this website the day before yesterday. I enjoy writing poetry and recently began writing on my first book 'Pyro'. I enjoy English, literature, and dusty volumes of old, old books. I'm into japanese culture (read: anime + manga) for some reason. I'm cuban/american and speak both french and spanish. I love singing (even thought i can't,) acting and playing the guitar. Chess is cool too, but my hobby is book collecting. I hope to meet more new people who share my interests too!

I hope this a good enought introduction and nice to meet y'all!!!!

I have a private library of books that I have collected that i have read and want to read. My collection consists of about 1500 titles, some are rare books. I plan on donating my books, which I have bought with my own money, to public libraries and other community and charitable causes, once my collection reaches 10,000 or more.

Bakiryu
04-08-2007, 08:48 PM
Gasps! You plan on donating your books?! *faints in horror*

(Sobs, I wish i counted as a charitable cause). I've only managed to collect 700 hundred books in the three years I've been in this country. (dirt poor, nods, nods.)
