Hi. Question # 1- In the first chapter of the book, what did the author mean about his brothers "being born on their backs with their hands in their trouser pockets"?
HOw did his parents die and his other siblings? Did they die young? Pip never got to see his parents, how was he able to describe how his parents looked? Thanks.

Newby here, and don't have a clue what book you are refering to, but anybody born on their back with their hands in their pockets would be someone that's more than just lazy. That praticular individual would be so lazy they wouldn't take their hands out of their pockets long enough to put food in their mouth.

Here goes nothing. I am new to this sight. Found it while studying for the CSET exam to get my English teaching credential. I have a BA in Journalism which I thought would somehow make me qualified. While in college (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth) I did have to take lit classes, but mostly I learned to get a good story and write - not really delve into the finer points of the classics. Boy, am I overwhelmed!

Hi,

I am fairly new to this forum, though this is not my first post as I have been really digging the song title game and posting there a lot. But, I thought I should formally introduce myself here and say hello to everyone.

I joined this forum because once long ago I was a literature student, and I am trying to get back into that mindset. It's weird, but I can't remember enough to participate outright in the discussions on literature, but I have enjoyed reading the posts. All I can remember from my school days is really enjoying The Lady of Shalot (I ended up writing two papers on that one and there is a good recording of it by Loreena McKennitt) so that is where I got my name here. I also liked William Blake. :) I see some really interesting poeple and posts on the forum and I am glad I stumbled accross this one.

Hi, everybody!

It's the first day i'm on this great website which allows me to meet so many friends here. Thank Pensive!

I'm from China. I'm a postgraduate majoring in linguistics, but i start to prepare for GRE in the hope that i could study in U.S.A. after my graduation. I like sci-fiction, romance stories and Robert Frost's poems. I keep reading because it can open another world and a different kind of culture to me; also it enhances my English gradually and helps me think in English instead of Chinese.

Weeping Willow, hi, i'm happily surprised when i know you are from Israel. I was a volunteer for the World Choir Games held in Xiamen China during Jul.16-Jul.26, 2006. I served as a translator and tour guide for LACHAN Jewish Chamber Choir. The Choir members are Jewish but live in Canada. We have had a great time together. This experience makes me feel intimate to Israel, Jewish people and Canada. ^^ My registered name "Keter" is given by the Choir Conductor which is a Hebrew name meaning "crown". All in all, it's glad to say hello to you on here.

Anyway, i'm so happy to meet you here. :p

As you can see, I'm very new to this forum, I stumbled across it one day and thought it was great, so, here I am. :D

Of course I have to say that I love to read. Right now I'm really keen on Austen and the all three of the Bronte sisters. I read P&P and I absolutley LOVED it. I also enjoy mystery, (Agatha Christie is a guilty pleasure), fantasy and the odd sci-fi. I come from a very musical family, so I play piano, sing and am learning to play violin. I am also a lover of all sorts of music from classical to rock and almost all things in between. I draw and act.

It feels kind of wierd to read all the things that others have posted and know there really isn't anything exciting for me to post, but I guess I'll just have to wait.

hello.
i actually just stumbled across this site tonight while doing a little research on one of my favorite books/stories of all time: The Phantom of the Opera. After looking for a little bit on the site, i decided to join.

so yeah...an introduction...

i'm sixteen going on seventeen in a few months, and a high school senior (go class of '07!). I'm most definately in love with books (my fave genre is fantasy) and consider myself a total bookworm.

a few of my passions...
1) reading. definately. i never understand it when people are all like, "ugh, i have to do reading for homework..." in a tone of disgust. It makes me sad! :bawling:
2) writing. oh man...you have no idea... one of my aspirations in life is to become published at least once. my favorite thing to write is Phantom of the Opera fanfiction and fanfiction in general (if you're into that sort of thing, feel free to look me up on www.fanfiction.net ;my penname is dark-hearted rose), but i do have a few originals in the works, and some average poetry as well.
3) music. i like to consider myself rather musically inclined...i might not be very good, but hey, it's there, hiding... anyway, i love listening and playing music (the good kind...:D ); it's a big part of my life. i play piano, violin, a little cello, a few guitar chords, and can get a noise out of a clarinet, and my voice is pretty good...not spectacular, or anything, but not hideous either.

so that's a little bit about me...can't wait to see what these forums have to offer!

Your Obedient Servant,
Lavender

HI all!

I stumbled across this forum when searching information about Irish authors for my contemporary Irish lit class. Even though I did not find the info I was looking for I liked what I saw and got stuck here for hours :D
I was in awe of this place and all of you like-minded, interesting, witty and intelligent people, so you gave me no choice but to join in...

So here comes a quick intro:

I'm Serafina, living in the far northern corner of Europe. I'm a grad student majoring in history, but I have also ventured the realms of literature, art history, political science, media studies and now film and television studies, my new passion.

I passionately love literature, although I haven't had time to read fiction for years. I'm just now starting again, trying to find my way through all these incredible classics. My favorite poet is W.H. Auden, although I'm so new to poetry I still find it pretty hard to read. I love Austen, Bronte sisters, Dickens, Hugo, Steinbeck, Hemingway, Greene, Wilde and Orwell, among others. These were just the first one that sprung to my mind... My fave contemporary is John Irving.

I'm also a movie buff with a stark passion for film noir and French new wave (and '50s melodramas as a quilty pleasure). Oh, and I simply couln't live without music. I listen to quite a wide range of music; pretty much anything from Lady Day to Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, the Smiths, Tom Waits to Death Cab for Cutie and Coldplay. Besides pop and blues I also listen to classical when I have the mood for it.

Ok, that's probably enough, will start exploring this awesome forum and stop bugging you guys for now :D:D :D

Welcome to all newbies!! You WILL enjoy LitNet, we promise you.

Lavender -- sounds like we have a great deal in common. It's nice to meet a fellow writer longing to be an author. I've got a little anecdote...

I was sitting in the library when a pair of secondary school students met at a table near mine. Their conversation ran along the stereotypical teenage fare, but somewhere in there, I heard "Ugh, I hate reading" in reference to school. In a library. The irony was palpable -- all I could do not to walk over and slap Oxford English on to the table.

Hi,

Here via a search for Chekhov short stories (which, by the way, isn't really typical of my reading habits...).

But I'm a literature glutton and rather indiscriminate, will read just about anything that catches my eye. Fave authors include Truman Capote, Iain Banks, Clive Barker, Tom Wolfe, Virgil, Steven Saylor, Alexander Kielland, Raymond Carver, Sarah Waters, Sylvian Hamilton... Right, should stop somewhere.

I'm Norwegian and read English in addition to Scandinavian languages, and wish my French and German were good enough for reading beyond school textbooks. I have a degree in literature, specifically hypertext literature (electronic and otherwise), and since I certainly don't mind reading on screen I let out an embarrassing little squeal of delight when I came upon the author index here.

Glad to be here, hope you won't mind having me :)

Schokokeks,
Thanks for the huge huggy! :)
It turns out that today I went out browsing and saw a different book on the Black Dahlia, by Donald H. Wolfe, The Black Dahlia Files,(2005), a fact-crime book which really claims to solve it, right down to the name of the killer and his accomplices. It also claims to discount the solution in the previous book I was aware of, and it is clearly going to provide more facts than the movie I saw yesterday. It sounds like I am getting sucked in to becoming an amateur expert on the case. After I read the book, that is, which will be who knows when? :(

Hello everyone,

I graduated with a BA in literature and technical communication in December '05. Well, as some of you may be able to relate to, I'm sorely in need of literary stimulation! I miss my lectures and essays - in fact, I miss college in general. So, here I am, at a literary forum, the first I've joined.

I'm an INTP in MBTI, which stands for Myers-Brigg Type Instrument. I took a class on personality theory in college, and I read Jung's personality theories in depth. MBTI is an offshoot of Jung's personality theory.

The British Romantic and Modern literary eras are my personal favorites; if I go to graduate school, chances are I will concentrate on either Romanticism or Modernism. Alternately, I might concentrate on technical communication, since I need to eat. ;)

Hi! I'm new here.

My name is Madeline, I'm an American university student.

I'm taking this year off to earn money and travel in SE Asia with Thich Nhat Hanh.

I love Modernism and post-Modernism to a degree that is truly stupid. Literature, visual art, theater, music -- all of it, I adore.

Right now I'm reading Lolita for the first time, which is a thrilling experience.

I love travel, the french language, avocadoes, and amatuer photography.

:) Excited to be here.

Big Al
10-01-2006, 02:52 PM
Hello everybody. My name is Adam, but I am known as Big Al to many of my friends. I live in a small town in Illinois, where I attend high school as a sophomore. I am a straight A student, and I am considered very intelligent for my age, though modesty forbids me from having an opinion on the matter.

I try to be a pretty nice and friendly guy, though I will admit to having streaks of cynicism, skepticism and sarcasm. I am pretty laid-back, I am adamently individualistic, and I am an intellectual free-thinker.

As far as my interests go, I love (and have a lot of knowledge in) great modern literature, fine, artistic cinema, rock music mostly from the 60s and 70s (or the "glory years" as I call them), writing (I am currently taking a writing class), and Fighting Illini basketball, which I obsessively follow and invest a tremendous amount of emotion.

Anyway, to give you a somewhat more specific picture of my interests, here are some my favorite:

Authors - Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Mark Twain, George Orwell, Ursula Le Guin, Hunter S. Thompson, John Steinbeck, Edgar Allen Poe and J.R.R. Tolkien (sometime in the near future I anticipate immersing myself in the works of Ernest Hemingway, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and Thomas Pynchon).

Filmmakers - Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Orson Welles, Ingmar Bergman, Luis Bunuel, Carl Theodore Dreyer, Federico Fellini, Martin Scorsese, Akira Kurosawa, Andrei Tarkovsky and Jean-Luc Godard.

Bands - The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, The Doors, Ween, Yes, The Clash, Van Halen, AC/DC, The Stooges, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, The Ramones, The Flaming Lips, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and John Lennon.

TV Shows - Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Simpsons, Penn and Teller: Bull****!, Twin Peaks, Fawlty Towers, South Park, Mr. Show, Mad TV and Chappelle's Show.

Well, that's about it. Any questions?

I have been in the claws of the Real Life demon lately and when I get that demon back into its cage I'll start moseying around. Fortunately the demons should only be temporary (burdensome paperwork). I definitely hope we can get to discussing your and my two favorites. I've read about half of VN's novels, most recently King, Queen, Knave, and have only recently discovered Virgina Woolf, reading your namesake of course. Looking forward to reading more of both some time soon. Is there a preferred venue here on the site for discussion? I really havn't looked around yet.

I love to read novels - reading is my escape from everyday life. I don't currently have a lot of people with which to discuss the books that I am reading, so I was very excited to find this site. I am currently reading "This Book Will Save Your Life" by AM Homes, my first novel by Homes but probably not my last.

I love the narration in it, too, even though we're having some trouble finding people who want to do it.
I just finished [U]1984:thumbs_up and am very pleased. I absolutely loved it and want to read Animal Farm. I'm reading To Kill a Mockingbird right now.

:) Greetings, I'm a new member. I was an English major at Columbia University (BA) class of 67, and received an MFA in theater arts from the short-lived theater program there.

I've been a professional actor all my adult life. I was privileged to be a part of New York Shakespeare Festival's Shakespeare in the Park productions of Henry IV parts i and ii (with Stacy Keach as Falstaff and Sam Waterston as Prince Hal). And one or two years later, the combined productions of Henry VI, i, ii, iii and Richard III (with Donald Madden as Richard). The Henrys were combined into two evenings and Richard III the third evening. I was among the corps of actors who comprised the "ensemble", meaning I had more costume changes than lines!

Hi I came upon this site in hopes of finding out more information on Animal Farm for school.
So I'm currently in high school and my interests are reading, writing, listening to music, movies, hanging out with friends...
Hahaha right now I'm just depressed about my low essay/multi paragraph marks. I was in regular English last year but this year I went into Honours after my last year's teacher put me in. The teacher I have now is notorious anyone whose had her will gasp if you reveal you have her. She's specific (standards) in what she wants and even though I'm pained everytime my papers are returned (my solid C! "^^ ) I've sort of stayed in the class even though so many people transferred out (there was not enough seats or desks for people the first day and just yesterday the teacher commented I'm glad the class has gotten smaller, it's about 20 or maybe 15 people now) I'm not sure if it's because I'm too lazy to go get my schedule changed this late in the year or if it's because I want to try and improve my essay writing which I've always thought sucked and made no sense.

Hello!
Just stopping by to introduce myself as suggested.
So, a little bit about myself:
My book friends say I'm a classic lit nerd who doesn't appreciate 'modern fiction' (modern being anytime after 1960, so I guess that's post modern). It's not true, though, because I do appreciate modern fiction, I just feel like there are SO many excellent books that I need to read before I get to the modern stuff. And I have to admit that I really enjoy the agonizing process of trying to comprehend a difficult or obscure passage and I LOVE footnotes. Still, in the past year I have made a definite effort to read more modern stuff, and I have succeeded...sort of.
Book I'm always reading: Don Quixote by Cervantes (various translations)
Book I'm starting: One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch by Solzhenitsyn (translator: ...I've got to look...)
Book I just finished: Middlesex by Eugenides
Book I'm in the middle of but probably will never get back to (though I can hope): Swann's Way by Proust, Anna Karinina by Tolstoy
Books I'm in the middle of but will never finish: anything by Dostoevsky who I try every year to read and never succeed, Wicked by Maguire
Authors I'm not old enough for (i.e. can't appreciate yet): Dickens, Austen.
Favorite books (in no particular order): Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace (hooray for footnotes!), Middlemarch by Eliot, Don Quixote by Cervantes, The Master and Margarita by Bulgakov, Heart of a Dog by Bulgakov, Sentimental Education by Flaubert, The Sin of Father Mouret by Zola, and many, MANY MORE!

Right now, I'm in a self-imposed exile from my real life (i.e. living in a place I really don't enjoy so that I can live rent-free and save money to rejoin my life) after a thoroughly enjoyable 4 month extended vacation from working in theatre. I'm thrilled to find this forum so I can try to keep my brain active! I hope that I will be able to contribute to what seems like a lively community.
--ceemarguerite
PS I tend to use very long, disjointed sentences. I hope that won't be too annoying!

Introduction: I'm an artist and a mom who homeschools because she gets to learn the history she hated when she was young. I'm currently on a poetry kick (Dante, Keats, Adrienne Rich, Donald Hall) but also am reading a lot of Jung and associated writers (Hollis, Hillman). Am trying to make time for Arthur Miller, Proust, and Shaw. I'm a dancer (modern), writer, painter (oils) and video artist.

I found this forum a week ago and only now am posting -- from the threads I've read, you all seem to be nice people and that's more than encouraging for me to post an introduction. I've never participated in any online forum before and always feel quite timid or uncertain to join one.

Well, introducing myself then: I'm Iris (but of course you can call me by my username, whichever is okay), a soon to be 23 years old girl (I say girl because I still feel like a teenage most of the time ¬¬) that is only a semester and a half away from obtaining her technician in Industrial Design diploma and plans to study Graphic Design after that. *cross fingers*

I can safely say that the greatest love of my life is (and probably will forever be) Art. That's sort of my nemesis as well: my biggest frustration is the fact I'm not a talented artist or an expert for that matter. All the things I don't know, still need to learn or just can't grasp -- ARGH. But I guess that's life, no one knows all even if only about a particular subject... right? :alien:

I like to learn (not to study though :() and subjects like Anthropology, Sociology, Languages, Psychology, History etc are very interesting to me and I would love to learn more and more about each.

Another noteworthy fact about me is that I'm very random eclectic; music wise especially. I can go from Frank Sinatra to Joy Division, for example. xD As for literature, I'm a classics lover. I adore childrens lit for some reason I'm still not entirely sure -- my best guess is the fantastic nature of the majority of them for I enjoy fantasy and sci-fi as well.

I love to have a laugh and chat -- feel free to contact me to have a chat if I'm online and you happen to be bored. I like soccer, volleyball and F1 although I fail at all three (ha!), dancing, listening to music, playing with animals, and, wow!, reading. The last one you didn't see it coming, confess it. :D

Mm, I guess that's enough for an intro post. I would just like to add that I hope to be a good member of this forum and since English isn't my native language, feel free to correct me if I ever misspell or use a word out of context -- I'll be grateful for that rather than angry or hurt. ;)

That's it. Have a nice day! o/

Hello to everyone!

My name is Stefan, I am 25 years old, and I am from Romania.

I graduated Biology at Bucharest State Univesity and now I`m studying Philology, with an English major, at "Stephan the Greate" University. I am a big reader, and I love both British and American writers and poets. I wrote a fiew essays and articles for local papers, but I do not dare to concider myself a writer.

Literature is my greatest passion, from fiction to poetry and from Homer to modern writers. I love good music and mountain trips, from rock climbing to camping under the bare sky.

I love this site and I have greate concideration for all the people here, coming to get their literary "fix" for the day, and talk about what they read, enlightening or seeking light.

I am very glad to be here, I hope to feel at home among you and, maybe make a fiew friends.

All the best!

I am a devout Southern Baptist, high school student who likes to write, and listen to classical music. My favorite books are anything by William Shakespeare, Agatha Christie, and most other classics, but I don't care for modern teen and adult books unless they are scientifically, religiously, or historically based. I volunteer at the local library. I would love to become a librarian or literature professor. I am a member of a chess club and a book club.

Alan Moore is cool too

Great idea, Pensive!

As for me, I like music (and singing), reading (although I haven't been able to a lot lately), writing, and history. Particularly, I like musicals at the moment, and writing poetry. Most of the year, I play soccer, even though for a quarter of the year, it's snowing (or just really cold). I live on the East Coast, though it doesn't snow a whole lot here. We pretty much survive the winter on minimal snow days, if any at all, though last year we had about two and a half or three feet of snow fall. My favorite books range about as far as my music genres, which is about anything, as long as it's good. Right now, though, I'm in a "Good Omens"-mood, by Teri Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, which was a fantastic book.
I think I may have said this somewhere else on this forum, but I love languages. I'm taking Latin and Classical Greek this year in school and trying to learn a bit of Spanish and German on my own (though it's not going too well). When I finish with Latin, though, I'll be changing to the otherside of the Eurasian continent and maybe pick up some Korean (my grandmother is from Seoul).
I love photography, too. Some things, especially in every day life, can be so beautiful if you can catch them at the right moment. Speaking of which, there is a used roll of film sitting on my desk right now. Hmm, I should probably get it developed some time soon.
Anyway, that's me in a nut-shell in this moment. Can't wait to learn more about you guys out there!

I totally stumbled on this site this am at work looking googling an author on vampire books. I went ahead and signed on not really looking much further. But now I am sitting at Mayo in Rochester, MN in a clinic waiting room waiting on my husband's appointment and using their internet! I have been navigating around and trying to figure out how to post my intro and finally here it is!

About me: married, no children, live in Minnesota, work as a director of a national home care agency. I read to escape reality of day to day issues, escape the endless political commercials on TV and anything that remotely resembles my job! LOL No really, when I have the time and I certainly wish I had more, I love to read. My favs are Sci-Fi Fantasy, which my mom introduced me to 30 years ago. I could always find her curled up in a chair reading. My husband and I raise and breed AKC Boxers and Bulldogs. Currently we have one on the "show road" competing for his championship.

I know from the threads I have been reading that I don't have the Lit background most of you have, but I love reading what you all write. Hopefully I will be able to contribute in the future meaningfully, but for now I will enjoy reading the interesting forum threads!

I'm a huge music fan and like everything except gheto rap.

tuscangirl,
Welcome. I am new here also. I started back to school late, at 35. I was enrolled as a full-timestudent, worked full-time as a municipal employee and a had a part-time job to get two of my children started in college. Whipped is the best word! I have since retired from my municiple job and now teach school. I enjoy almost every minute of it. It was worth the struggle. You can achieve only what you set out to do.

Always remeber, one step at a time.

Hello...

I am not usually very good at introducing myself (I'm shy!) but I joined the forum a year ago, posted once, and then got so busy I wasn't able to return. I'm not the post-and-leave kind of girl so I thought I would drop back in and redeem myself a little.

A little about me, hmmm. Well, I am a married mom of three kiddos. I have a background as a health care provider but I have been working at home full time for two years writing. I have written one novel and plotted a second but took some time off from that to co-write a screenplay with my husband. Movies are not my "field" but I really had a lot of fun doing it and we have just gotten an agent and have begun the submission process, so it's very exciting. We are planning two more screenplays within a year.

In addition to writing I have been teaching myself web design and I own a very successful internet riddling gaming site with more than 300 levels. I also started the first web based real time team scavenger hunt, which requires members from all over the world solve a riddle to discover their target then physically go take a digital picture of that target with a team sign. It will have been open for a year this coming December and it's a lot of fun. Each game has it's own busy forum and thanks to great moderators I don't have to be there constantly anymore.

I don't have a lot of time to post, but I like to read what others have to say, so you might see me lurking around from time to time. I usually pipe up here and there. I think that just about sums me up. Nice to meet all of you.

How are you sweetheart?
It seems so unreal to be back here and I feel so happy, I am afraid I may wake up and find this a dream. :p
I am back home, which is great, and as my moral improves, I believe my health will recover along with it.
The Doctors allowed me to spend some time every day (if I feel ok) without the ventilator, so that I can interact with you. :D

Thanks for the compliment. It just seemed to work out that way. Having a good job is very important, unless you're independently wealthy.

Let me lay out some of the options. If you major in lit you'll either be a teacher or do something totally unrelated to literature. If you want to be a teacher, fine; if not, then what did the lit degree amount to? If you get a degree in computers, work may be completely different than school (like it was for me in engineering) and you might like it and be happy; if it's still boring then you made a bad choice. While a job does not have to be the love of your life, you have to be happy at a job. You are there 8 or so hours a day, one third of your life. I happened to get a good job and then went back at took up what I enjoyed, more as a hobby than anything else. Virgil, I agree with you about job verses hobby. If you do something 'day in and day out', you start to see it as work and work can be all monotomy. Better to reserve the things you like best outside the workplace. Not many people love their jobs, unforunately. I was one of them, being stuck in a position not entirely what I had gone to college for. I hated reading at a young age, but that was because they made us read certain novels in high school. I like to pick my own! Now I love reading and pursuing certain authors. BTW, Virgil, I can't seem to find the Shakespeare thread where the active discussion of Hamlet is taking place. Can you clue me in? I will go there later on. Also, I will try to write something to introduce myself on this thread. Who ever started it - great idea!

There is no creativity in the education of engineering.

 :bawling: :flare:

I don't know you personally, but the rest of your post seems friendly enough. However, (above) seems a bit over the wall. It is true that the abuse of the results of engineering have much to be desired, but the education of any discipline is a tribute to the creative elements it professes. I would not be far afield saying that the wonders of today's discoveries of the unknowns which remained a source of superstitions in our past, are a product of the creativity which comes from intelligent application of engineering principles taught by engineering education. I will concede that the abuse of this or any knowledge about power and energy, is an atricious moral transgression against the respect our delicate environment deserves. After all, who are we that can make no more that an hundred years or so of life on a planet that has an approximate age of 4 billion years more or less. :crash:

I'm a grumpy old man with too much to give and an axe to grind. If the world is going to hell, I don't want any credit for helping it to do so. Not because I'm not guilty of contributing, but because it's not my heart's desire to see it go that way. For over 60 years I have seen more to praise than to curse, but the cursing is quickly gaining, depending on experience, of course. May the goodness of what life has to offer you lay in your path, while what you owe for it has already gone another way.

If your saying that the world has been greatly improved by the application of engineering, well I definitely agree with you. Perhaps my statement was a little over the top. There is no reason why engineering education cannot be creative. However, I must say that it was not my experience. Let me also say that I found a disconnect between what is taught in engneering schools and real life engineering jobs. But that was 22 years ago. I believe they have improved somewhat since, at least around me.

I miss you and I hope I can come here more after the application.

Hi All...

I'm pretty new here, but I have contributed to some of the Shakespeare's Hamlet discussion on the "Ghost" thread and so I have had the chance to "meet" Virgil and some others.

My names Arlene, I'm 59, married, and I have always been a voracious reader of just about everything. I've been a professional stage director and dramaturg in the NYC/NJ area for over 20 years, and my passions are New Play Development - I work in close collaboration with several playwrights in the development and production of their new plays and musicals - and Shakespeare. With the exception of some high school plays, I didn't get into theatre until I was 34 when I "accidently" ended up getting an Associate degree in theatre arts and started acting, stage managing and directing in community theatre as an increasingly intense hobby for over 10 years. At that point I had the good fortune to Assistant Direct and Stage Manage for a wonderful NY director who encouraged me to ge into directing professionally and eventually became my mentor and a dear friend.

I've always loved Shakespeare, but recently I've become more passionate in my study of his work, and several years ago I was thrilled to be accepted to study for an MA in "Shakespeare & Theatre" in a wonderfully innovative part-time program at The Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon, UK. I had my first class there last summer and am currently working on my next two classes through long-distance learning. This coming summer I will return to Stratford to take my final class and then begin work on my dissertation, which will focus on an alternative approach to the roles of Ophelia and Gertrude in Hamlet, exploring the reinterpretation of both characters as more active participants in the actions of the play than are traditionally presented, particularly in their relationships with Hamlet, Claudius and each other. Hopefully, it will include a full production of Hamlet that I will direct. This has been a dream of mine for years, but I never believed I could actually do it... Apparently being a cockeyed optimist pays off, because here I am, living my dream!

I'm happy to be here and to meet you all and, hopefully, to get the chance to contribute to some good, passionate, but friendly discussions.

Hi Toni! Thanks for the welcome.

I know that you don't want to hear this, but you are young yet and have lots of time to work on making your dreams come true. I'm convinced that if you want something enough you can make your dreams come true. Sometimes not in the way you originally thought you wanted them, but sometimes in ways that turn out to be much better. Remember, I didn't start working on my dream until I was much older than you. It's amazing how much your dreams change throughout your life. At 16 I wanted to be a veterinarian! In college I studied to be a medical technologist and actually got my degree in that and worked in the field for about a year. Then I was a wife and stay-at-home-Mom for years. Then I was a Tupperware Lady. Then, while I was studying theatre and doing community theatre I did silk flower design and even had my own store! It wasn't until I was past 45 that I realized how important theatre and directing was in my life and that it was really what I had been moving toward all my life.

Acting professionally is one of the most difficult careers there is. But if you have talent and are willing to work really hard, to study to learn the skills you will need and have passion, determination and perseverence, you too may have a chance to follow your dreams and to feel the joy of seeing them come true. Taking acting workshops is a great start for you. I hope you have a wonderful time with them.

Hi. Just thought I would add something to this thread.

I've posted on this website before, but I've never seen this thread.

I get the feeling I'm not going to sound as impressive as everyone else, but I'll press on. I live in Australia. I have played the piano since I was ten, and the violin for a bit less. I've done year 12 Italian, but I wouldn't boast of being a hugely fluent speaker.

I love the music of Mozart (Happy 250th Mozart!). I also like Rachmaninov, Schubert, Ravel, Saint-Saens and I would have to say I cannot live without "The Lark Ascending" by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

I really enjoy reading (obviously), and while I haven't read just about every book in English Classical literature, I figure I have many years yet to do that. I like the works of Jane Austen, Anne Bronte, P.G. Wodehouse (though I haven't read much of his yet), Oscar Wilde, and Henrik Ibsen. I have other favourite books, but these are just some authors I thought of. There are about a thousand other books I have not yet read (or have started but never got round to finishing), and I hope you can all offer me a few recommendations.

I'm a new member and I'd like to read about the American literature in depth because I'm not American . I'm Arabic and I read a lot of the arabic literature , and some of the American too . Recently I came to America to study . I've been living at the pacific ocean caost for about 6 months , specificly in Oregon State . So , that's why I want to read more and more about America . I read a little bit about how the American essence came into being , but the most important for me is to know about the literature history and who were the most famous writers in the American history .
