Hi all - this looks like a very cool and interesting site. I teach English Literature and Language to students aged 15-18 at a co-ed state high school (we call them colleges) in a small town in a rural area of the North Island of New Zealand. I am an avid reader off all sorts of things... I couldn't possibly name a favourite book or author.

looking forward to getting to know some people here :thumbs_up

Hello all!

I stumbled onto this website while doing some research for a class I am teaching in the fall. I know, I know... its a bit nerdy doing research for fall already but I enjoy what I do.

The class is called Religion and Literature and I am researching Dracula right now... any research advice would be greatly appreciated. Here are the other texts I am using (again... any comments or resources are welcomed):

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Dracula by Bram Stoker
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

I'm excited about being a part of the forum... but I'm a technophobe and still learning my way around... so please be patient.

Thanks!

Sorry no fancy avatar just Eccles.

I have been reading more and more American novels and works of late and being a distance away don't really know what other authors would appeal. More recent reads would be Niffeneger, Franzen, Kerouac. I have been quite taken with Franzen's worried style and I'm open to any ideas of a similar genre.

Eccles is where I'm from originally, a little town in Greater Manchester.

I came across this site after recieving a letter from the International Library of Poetry aka poetry.com...a scam of course. Researching a bit I came across this site and like what I see. I'm looking for magazines, etc that will take poetry submissions...I want to be part of a poetry/writers forum and post some of my work here. Oh, I know, I'll post the poem that I got the letter from poetry.com about! Thanks! Chris

Greetings!
I just happened upon this site looking up JM Barrie...
What an interesting site it appears to be.
I am very much into reading anything by CS Lewis, he is among one of my all time favourites. Right now I am reading Letters of CS Lewis, Peter & Wendy and The Order of the Phoenix (my kids like me to read Harry Potter to them). I like mystery's, fantasy and some sci-fi.
I also like to write, have been doing that since I was kid. I usually write on the fantasy side of things.
I look forward to posting more on here:)

Greetings everyone,
I have been watching the conversations, and noted how so many users have great relationships with the others and I was getting a little wistful until I saw this thread, so I will try to introduce myself and make some new friends.
My user name, as you may have guessed, is from T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland" and my motto, "Noli me tangere" from Wyatt's "Whoso list to hunt" - I believe these bookend me nicely. I have an MA in English literature, with an emphasis in comparative lit. . .my favorite areas are Renaissance lit and Modernist poetry, although I rarely meet a piece of poetry or prose I don't like (Ulysses being the major exception!) :brow:
I have many interests and hobbies. In addition to working as a labor consultant, I teach ballroom dancing, specializing in International Latin style. I also ride horses competitively in dressage events. I have a 17 year old Thoroughbred named Alexander the Great and a 2 year old Rhinelander named Eurythmic that is waiting to take over Alex's job when he retires. I also have a 22 year old Thoroughbred that I retired from jumping competitions. I also participate in local theatre/opera, play a smashing game of tennis, downhill ski, and spend any leisure time (ha ha) fly fishing for trout.
I love the forum, as I have not had an outlet to discuss what I read for a long time. My significant other is starting to hide under the bed at the mere mention of "deconstruction," and heaven forbid I mention the name Umberto Eco! Poor little chemist/physicist!!
I look forward to chatting with you all soon-

Hyacinth Girl, I wanted to tell you I love the Vermeer avatar. Good to welcome someone who also has an interest in Renaissance lit. I'm a Grad student specializing in the English Renaissance, with the occasional jaunt into continental lit (esp. Italy and France). What languages did you do your comparative work in? By the way, if you're interested, the poem of the week this week in the "poems, poets and poetry" sectioin of the forums is Milton's "When I consider how my light is spent," so given your interest in Renaissance verse you might to stop by and throw in your two cents. We always like to welcome newbies into the discussion. :)

Hyacinth Girl-- Sounds like you did some interesting stuff with the comparative lit. angle. I've always found comparative studies appealing. What Spanish writers were you working with? I haven't had as much experience with Spanish texts in the Renaissance, as I have Italian because I've never really studied the Spanish language. I did write a chapter on Garcilaso in my thesis from a few years back though, mostly because a grad. student in the department where I was had done some wonderful translations of his sonnets.
I'm actually working on a couple of papers on Shakespeare right now. The one I'm writing at the moment is on ekphrasis in relation to the Rape of Lucrece and Venus and Adonis. The other paper is on The Tempest, and focuses on the masque presented by Prospero toward the end of the play. Look forward to seeing you 'round the forums.

Vada, I recently heard Lake Isle of Innisfree recited by Yeats (I think that's what he recited). "But Yeats is dead!" you say. There is a new CD called Poetry on Record: 98 Poets Read Their Work, 1888-2006, that I heard about on Terry Gross's Fresh Air, and Yeats was one of the selections. He sounded like a schoolmaster threatening to paddle an errant student. The show was Billy Collins and Poetry on Record (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5411340).

Hi,
My name's Natashia. My mom was reading war and peace when she was pregnant. And so it stuck.
I love to read! I come from a book loving family and so I started very young.
I was reading Raymond Feist at 10. I didn't quite understand everything but i loved it anyway. And so started my love affair with Fantasy and sci-fi.
I was raised on childrens classics like Anne of green Gables, Girl of the Limberlost, Little Princess, Secret Garden etc.
Umm I love to sing, run, teach, garden, cook. I'm currently teaching myself Remedial Massage, Aromatherapy, and Natural remedies.
I am waiting with bated breath and much stress to find out whether I've been accepted into Uni!!! If I have then I will be studying Primary Education (little people teaching) or Psychology. I haven't quite decided, but i really should hurry up!
I hate introducing myself on these things. I feel as though i should have a model of myself on a revolving platform while i stand in front with a megaphone saying "Step right up, look at this wonderful young lady. She can cook clean, and is in general just perfect!"
I'm not normally this blond, I am in fact usually a restrained and tasteful young lady. But it is 3am here and i had a bad day!
So to those I haven't managed to scare off...
I LOVE LUCKY CHARMS!!!!!
Sincerely,
Tasha

Hello everyone!

My name is Leah, i'm a 16 year old High School student in Dundee, (in Scotland) and i love books! My favourite genres have to be "classics" and fantasy but i generally read anything which appeals to me.

I love poetry - especially Sylvia Plath and William Blake. I do write, however it is mainly fantasy which i deal in: i like having no restrictions in my writing whatsoever, and fantasy is an effective medium to achieve that.

My favourite book...that's a hard one: I love so many. But, regarding Classics, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte or The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald have both had major effects on my perceptions of the world we live in, and the world that once was. For this reason, they will always have a special place in my heart. (sounds far too cheesy, i know :p)

I like learning, in any way. I love anything to do with Biology or languages, and i REALLY love French - or should i say, J'adore francais beaucoup! :p

Sportswise, i dont do a lot of that sort of stuff; Not really a fan. My Dad is a personal trainer though, so i do know the ins and outs of that general field. I do pilates daily (apart from Sunday, but not for religious reasons :) )

My favourite singer has to be vintage Whitney Houston. Such an emotive voice, but such a shame looking now at the wreckage she has become.

Fave TV show...possibly Desperate housewives. I like its unpredictability; and some of the characters are truly exceptional AKA Bree Van De Kamp.

So, there you go. A little bit about me. :)

If there is anything else you want to know, please ask!

xxx

Hello,

I just found this forum today. I am an avid reader and have been for a number of years. In fact some might label me a bibliophile. My wife and i together have filled our living spaces in our home with books. I have many books at various stages of being read on any given day, and i switch between them as the mood fits me. I will confess that i've completely read maybe a quarter and partially read maybe another quarter of my books. I tend to acquire books and then not read them until some time later. I collect Folio Society and Easton Press books. I do try to stick to the policy that i won't buy a book unless i intend to read it. I recieved my M.A. in Humanities from Louisiana State University in '96 and currently live in Belgium.

I'm currently actively reading (meaning i read out of them at least once a week):

1. "Milton: Complete Poems and Major Prose." Last night i was working through his essay "Christian Doctrine." This book is a massive tome and will take time to get through. I've only recently acquired it.

2. Johan Huizinga's "The Autumn of the Middle Ages." This work is a lovely read and beautifully translated into English. Provides a vivid description of life and attitudes during the Middle-Ages.

3. Antony Beevor's "Stalingrad." This is a riveting work for those interested in WWII eastern front history. It has the punch of von Mellenthin's "Panzer Battles" and might not be as intense as Guy Sajer's "The Forgotten Soldier."

4. I've been working on Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Friend: A Series of Essays to Aid in the Formation of Fixed Principles in Politics, Morals, and Religion." This is a wonderful collection of Coleridge's writing. His discussions are thought provoking indeed. I just read his Essay IV on arrogance. Great stuff!

5. I've been working through contemporary essayist William Gass's "A Temple of Texts" which is also very thought provoking. His list of the 50 greatest literary works of all time is very interesting indeed.

As i'm a student of Islam and the Middle-East as well, i am currently carefully reading, Robert Hoyland's "Seeing Islam as Others Saw It" which is a very interesting analysis drawing on 7th century Christian, Zoroastrian, Jewish, and Muslim sources about how non-Muslims reacted to the Muslim invasions of Sasanian/Byzantine areas as well as how they interacted with Muslims. Also i've been working on Maria Rosa Menocal's "The Ornament Of The World" which is a lovely work discussing the culture of tolerance that did exist in Andalusia during the reign of the Umayadds over southern Spain. I also read excerpts from works by numerous Muslim intellectuals throughout my average week.

Rudyard Kipling's dictum that "East is East and West is West and never the Twain shall meet" is one that i actively try to work against in my writing and discussion.

Hello,

My wife and i together have filled our living spaces in our home with books. I have many books at various stages of being read on any given day, and i switch between them as the mood fits me. I will confess that i've completely read maybe a quarter and partially read maybe another quarter of my books. I tend to acquire books and then not read them until some time later.
Ulysses, that sounds just like me. Welcome to lit net. That is an impressive reading list and somewhere on my bookshelves lies The Autumn of the Middle Ages only slightly read. I hope you will share your learning here and enter our discussions.

Hey, everyone! Just started a blog on myspace.com about George Orwell's "1984" but I'm interested in the literature of "oppressed" societies and individuals, both historical and fiction. Hope to hear from you guys . . . be well!

The "wolfram" in my email comes from Wolfram von Eschenbach, author of "Parsifal" which was later adapted by German composer Richard Wagner for his opera of the same name.

I already have introduced myself in a different thread, but not really formally, as in, not written about my interests.

reading is a hobby that I have pursued (off and on though), I am a very slow reader. I usually take a lot of time finishing a book. I particularly like reading novels written by authors of Indian origin. Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth if one of the books that I enjoyed reading, these authors have Indian characters and often I can relate to some character of the book. I have a small collections of books (some gifted by my brother), most of them are by Indian authors.

Besides that, I am a commerce graduate, but at the end of my graduation I was saturated with all the money matters that I just didnt want to continue with that, so entered into the world of computers and did my postgraduation in computers. I have changed two prefessions, earlier I was into Content Writing, where I had to read articles from books, magazines, newspapers and prepare short summary for people to read on the Internet, then I shifted into computers, now I have to test softwares. Being destructive is my motto these days (it helps in my profession)

You must be wondering what a techie is dong in a literary society like this one. But the truth is that I do like reading books.

I am into sports also, pursuing some game keeps me alive.

I love reading, I really love it.

I'm happy to register in this forum, 'cause it's so amazing to learn what people all over the world read, to find someone in another corner of the world with the same interests and to exchange opinions, give advice, raceive advice, express your feelings and emotions.

I have a problem with reading. Sometimes I don't remember whether I've read a particular book or no. I mean you ask me "Did you rid this or that?" and I tell you "I don't remember". Or I remember that I read it once, but Ii don't remember what the book was about or what was the ending... IMPRESSIONS stay in my memory. I'm sad about this teat of mine, sometimes I think "What's the reason to read, if I don't remember anything...." I don't know how to fix this problem... Nevertheless, I feel that reading enriches my personality and makes me know the world around me. I love people and reading makes me sure that all people are worth to be loved.

I hope to find driends here.

And I hope you'll advise me a couple of good books to read ;)

Welcome

Wolfram--So are you a Wagner fan too, or just into Eschenbach? Welcome to lit. net. and hope you like it here.

Literaturerocks--Always good to welcome a fellow Dante fan. The Divina Commedia is indeed a very cool work  (especially cool--downright frozen--when you get down to that last circle of the inferno ;)). It's one you'll probably relish coming back to many times over in the course of your life.

Madhuri--Always good to see someone taking an interest in literature as something outside their field. There are actually a good number of "techies" who enjoy discussing lit here, so you should fit right in.

Harmonica--Everyone who reads a lot forgets some things. One thing you might like doing is keeping a "book journal" where you jot down a few main characters, highlights of the plot, and a few favorite quotes after you read a book (I knew someone who even had a rating system of one to four stars for the books they read to remember if the book was worth recommending). If you keep it on computer you'll be able to keep it alphabatized and that way you'll always be able to go back and refresh your memory about the books you've already read.

Hello all,

I am new to the forum and just reading some of the posts, I am happily surprised by how well read everyone is. I've never had the oppertunity to talk to people who are interested in the books I absolutely love. By far Thomas Hardy is my favourite author.

Other than reading literature, I love studying history, politics, and philosophy.

Hey Black Rose, welcome to the forum. I read Thomas Hardy's A Mayor Of Casterbridge a year ago and really liked it a lot but unfortunately never got oppertunity to read any other work by him. Now, you have reminded me of him, I guess that I will try his works someday.

Oh, interesting, I also like to study History and have a slight interest in politics but never discuss politics in the forum, as it is not allowed. Politics remind me of a Urdu Proverb:

Jab paida hua siasatdan to shaitan ne kaha
lo aaj mein bhi sahib-e-oolad ho gaya

I've been here for some time, as you can see by the post count. I never really dropped over to say much about myself because I came here in the first place to find people who might come to like me for just who I am, the Mad Poet, the guy with the weird accents and quick to make jokes and laugh. I've lost some friends on the forum, friends I miss very much. But a forum must have rules and structure or it will collapse like a deck of cards in the wind. Life goes on. Many I called friend come on the chat line and leave as soon as they see that I alone am available. It hurts, yes, but I am not the man to lie in the road and whine. I am not like the rest of you in so many ways. For many of you, I could be your parent, yet I talk to you as an equal, not as if I were above you. I am a Christian and I do not change with the blowing of the wind, or when someone disagrees. But I call the Atheist friend and mean it; I reach out to people of other faiths and try to find common ground. This is my way and my philosophy. You know not what type of hell I face daily, and I know little of yours. But the blood in your veins is red as mine, and it is possible that we could save each other’s lives. Why then fight over trifles? God bless from the Dragon.

I'm Jim and it's nice to meet you all. I truly believe that there is nothing better than a rainy day and a cup of tea and a cat in your lap and a good book. I found this site while researching a quote from R. D. Laing, from The Politics Of Experience. It's here and I recommend it highly. The man has a genuinely beautiful mind.
The other reason I'm here flabberdegazzing at you is that there was an argument in progress upon which I stumbled, and to my shame I do not remember who was involved, but it was about the impossibility of God creating itself, and I thought that this utterly misses the point: which is that either God exists or it doesn't, and if it does, this could be a problem. I do not understand why it is anathema to the mind that God might be a few beads short of a rosary. Those who believe that there is some sort of a something or other out there tend to assume that that something is sane. I offer the evidence of the world as it is in refutation. I believe that God exists and I fear deeply that God is a squirrel that can't find its nuts.

I'm going nowhere unless I'm asked to leave, and then I'll tip me 'at, say I've 'ad a jolly time 'ere, and exit stage right with no rancor. One of the first things I learned in life is "Always find out who the boss is." That way, you do what is within the guidelines, and you have less trouble. And in the end, there can only be one final say. Learn that lesson and you learn life pretty well. ;)

Hello!

My name is Elly, I'm a full-time event planner at GATech and attend school full-time at Georgia State University where I am working on my second degree in Literary Studies. The plan is to continue on into a Master's in Japanese Literature and a PhD in Comparative Literature. I'll be in school forever and I'll love every second of it.

My favourite books are widespread. I love post-modern Japanese literature but I'm not too fond over the classics. I'm mostly interested in the rapid change of literature around the world post-WWII. My favourite authors are most likely Haruki Murakami and David Foster Wallace. There are millions of authors I could list and I love them all the same.

Apart from reading I absolutely love spending time with my pets. I have 3 cats and soon to add a dog into the picture (a Silken Windhound named Love). I live in the city and have a total weakness for the park, water, and beer festivals (I absolutely go crazy for beer festivals in the park with free water). I also love to ride my bike everywhere...between my boyfriend and I we have four bicycles. I'm actually getting rid of my car this month...it costs me a fortune and I don't even use it!

Ah, and last but not least... I found this site while bored at work and researching Freud.

I know, I had read that somewhere and I did reread the beginning but while we know what becomes of Hal, how did he get that way? Are we to assume it was drug use or did he have some kind of breakdown? And who was that person in the apartment waiting for his dealer? And most importantly...what happened to Don Gately? I started a thread about it on the general board but no one seemed to be able to answer my questions...if you have the answers, check it out...please (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17621)! Hi, I am new here. I googled this site looking for information on O. Henry. When I was in high school I read a short story that I believe was by O. Henry. I often wish I had this story or knew how to obtain it. I have asked many people about it but know one seems familiar with it. This story was about a man who was in prison and dis-connected from his family of origin. What I remember most vividly about the story is that the woman was seeking her estranged son and found who she thought might be her son in prison. The young man brought to talk to her looked familiar to her- he was beligerent and denied that he was her son. He finally convinces her that he is not her sonand is not worthy to be called her son so the woman stands up to leave very dejected - the young man maintains his stance until she is out the door and then he rushes to it and cries after the mother he just turned away. IT was a very touching story. I was reading the book Think and Grow Rich and Napoleon Hill mentions O. Henry and his time spent in prison which is where he discovered his true writing talent. So it is possible the story I read was auto-biographical - even though O. Henry's mother died when he was young. If anyone know of this story and how I might obtain a copy of it. I would extremely grateful.
Thanks

Hello Madhuri,
Thanks for your interest...
I am sorry at first to reply late, but I was busy...
Egypt is known to the world for its Pyramids and Sphinx, and its Pharonic Culture. Now, we live in a much modernised country; and still retain our heritage.
All I can say at the moment about Egypt is that the language its citizens speak is Arabic, its main religion is Islam (and there are Christians as well) and its population is about 76 millions. Its climate used to be moderate both at summer and winter; but for the last few years it grew very hot in summer -- winds coming from India!
That is some of what I have in mind now... Should you find it good, tell me; and you can ask for more! :thumbs_up

That sound's interesting. I once tried learning Urdu, and thought of getting a self-learning book, but when I browsed through I realised it is a tough language. In India, Muslims usually speak Urdu (in Northern India especially) and they do learn Arabic for reading Koran. Maybe you can help me learn a few Arabic words or Urdu (if you know ofcourse). Would help me learn how to write "Ashraf" in Arabic?

Hi. I am an educator from England in the United Kingdom. I teach English to teens and love it so much that I like to get involved in literature even when I am not at work. I read all the time and feel incomplete without a book in my bag. I also write bits and bobs myself although I don't attempt to get anything except teaching materials published. I'm a fairly happy person. The international flavour of this forum looks good to me and the age mix too. It seems a really welcoming place. :)

Hey people I still don't know how to use this thing properly yet so I guess the correct place to start is at the begining... well that's not entirely true if you're a book lover but hey nevermind. I'm starrie, just found this site mooching around the internet and thought I'd give it a go. Hope we can find lots to talk about. I can't really say I have a favourite book or author or even time period because I like so much. I'm studying a degree in English and Philosophy and that's about it. Not much to tell right now but I'm sure I'll start talking lots as time goes on. Hope to speak to you all soon.

Well Madhuri,
First, I apologise again for replying late -- it is a habit, you know!
I do not know Urdu. I had a friend who knew how to speak Urdu, for he had Indian origins; but I do not.
I do not know what you mean by helping you learn how to write "Ashraf" in Arabic... Is it the Arabic word meaning "the most honourable"? Or you mean something else?
J'attends ta reponse! ;)

Hello :)

I was prompted to make my first post here, so erm, here i am!

A bit about myself? Well, i'm from London, I'm still at school! (feeling a little young...) but that doesn't mean i don't enjoy classic literature, because believe me I do. I'm studying Great Expectations at the moment, which is the main reaon I'm here, this site is very useful for helping me with my essay! I also study geography, german, drama, art, maths and science, of which i enjoy drama the most!

I'm also very into music. I play several instruments: piano, trumpet and guitar. All very different instruments! I enjoy listening to music immensly, mainly rock, but can vary depending on mood! I LOVE going to gigs! I'd not survive living anywhere without such a vast number of gig venues as London! Also - I love playing gigs with a band i play bass for, The Primes.

Thank you for the welcome! Much appreciated :)

Hey Everyone,

My name is Kenneth Matheson, and i live in Nova Scotia Canada. I am entering my first year of university in the fall with dreams of becoming an art historian. I enjoy classical literature the most, but i am a fan to most types. I try to keep an open mind and be open to new ideas, and opinions. I love all types of music, and artwork.

I love this site i think it is a great idea to have all these books online for everyone to discover. I myself have discovered quite a few books here that have moved up to become some of my favorites.

Hi everybody,

yesterday I became a member of this forum , which seems to be very interesting (though I hadn't and have the time at the moment to get into ist as much as I would like to). It was too late to introduce myself, it is as late as well tonight (I am living in GErmany) but I guess I have t start somehow.

So, Virgil, you've got company. I am even older than you though also being born in 1961. Am I right that we are the dinosaurs of this forum?

I love reading more than anyrhing else. Even more than watching sports, i. e. soccer (too sad, that the worldcup has ended a fortnight ago). Originally after finishing school in 1980 I made an apprenticeship and became a bookseller. Then in 1983 I studied German, English and American literature and got an M. A. degree. And nowadays I am working as a fre lance editor, spending most of the year on one project, writing texts on hotels and restaurants for a guide.

That are merely the first things which came to my mid. Of course my life has some more facettes than just written. Similiar to Madhuri I feel a bit shy writing for the first time here (not in my native language) but do hope to fit in and learn much more about you.

That's it for now
a nice weekend for all of you out there

Hi, everyone! Wow! What an array of characters for a novel are represented here!

I'm Robert :brow: and joining you brings as much joy as being handed a new toy!

I'm a retired high school Literature teacher, which should tell you SOMETHING
about why I joined you. I didn't come here to take any tests, however, so please refrain from asking the TOUGH questions - my memory doesn't always serve me well.

Three children, all grown; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. I love spectator sports, great literature, and classical music by most composers who lived prior to the 1970s. Favorite composers: Jean Sibelius and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Favorite authors: J. R. R. Tolkien and Charles Dickens, representing a rather broad spectrum, don't you think?

But enough about me. I am looking forward to many happy hours spent on this website and to the absolutely fascinating discussions which I know will come.

Hi everybody!
I just joined this forum yesterday and I'm already over the moon. I'm seventeen years old and I've been in love with books for as long as I can remember. I'm from Germany originally but I have spent the last ten years of my life in Lebanon, where I learned English, French and Arabic. A couple of weeks ago I had to leave the country because a war broke out and right now I'm staying with my family in Austria. But enough about that. As soon as I could understand enough English I started to read like crazy. I soon progressed from simple kids' stories to timeless classics. I love Charles Dickens and Jane Austen and of course Shakespeare. But my favourite poems would have to be by Wordsworth. I just love his theme of nature. All my lit education has been self-taught, since our school only teaches English for dummies.
Other than reading, I also like to go to the movies, listen to music, dance, and sometimes paint. Oh and since I'm staying in Vienna now and seeking to brush up on my German, I was wondering if any of you could recommend a good Austrian/German writer. I don't really know anyone (English is my first love). That's all I can think of right now, and thanks Pensive for starting this thread. I'm still finding my way around.

Oh, I almost forgot. You wanted to know what type of books I like, right? Well, the classics, of course, fantasy (LOVE LOVE LOVE) and some sci-fi, historical novels, mythology, fairy tales (H.C.Anderson, Grimms, etc), biographies, detective stories, poems, plays, and anything else I can get my hands on!

Hello everyone!

I've known and loved the Literature Network page for quite some time but I haven't brought up the courage to join this forum - until now.
Wendy isn't my real name (unfortunately, because I realy like it :D ) and I've never been to Neverland. I live a rather boring life in Austria where I'm a student at university. In 4 years (and I'm hoping it's only going to be those 4 years) I'm going to be an interpreter *wohoo*

As for literature, I'm a big fan of the classics but the biggest part of my heart belongs to fantasy literature. You know, the must-have-reads like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and, my current favourite, A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin.
My favourite classics would be... well, everything by Jane Austen (except for Persuasion), Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Oscar Wilde's plays (plus Dorian Gray) and North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell.

Whew, that was a big introduction. I guess I'll go explore this forum a bit now. :)

Good afternoon, everyone. I'm here to see what people are saying about stuff. As for introductions, I'm a student of English and literature. Perhaps a student of English Literature, but my head is being turned more and more to American writers--not to the exclusion of Russian and French and what-not writers, or the expatriates like Eliot and Pound and Joyce (three of my favorites.) Well, I read, and that's what I do--and I do other things, like work at a library and volunteer at another library. That's what I do.
Anyway, I will optimistically say that I look forward to having more questions than answers.

I was introduced to Yeats as a schoolboy and have loved his poetry ever since. I live in Dublin, the city where Yeats was born. This year we have a Yeats Exhibition in the city and I have already spent several hours engrossed in it. See details in www.nli.ie . The exhibition will go on for three years.I studied Latin at school and still read it a little. Also I really like Shakespeare. I was fortunate as a teenager to have a cousin who managed a hotel in Stratford on Avon and I saw many Shakespearean plays but it is his sonnets I really enjoy. Dublin has been an English-speaking city for 800 years and has a wonderful literary tradition.Seamus Heaney, another of our poets and like Yeats a Nobel prizewinner, lives here. I have a modest knowledge of Irish, the historical language of Ireland beyond the Pale-i.e. that part of the country outside a fence built around Dublin hundreds of years ago. Irish has some lovely poems too.

on finger faults ( I still use a pen rather than a word processor)
Right ho,thats the intro done ,lets hope it ends up in the right place and doesnt mess with the threads of somebody's precious tapestry.

I'm half sick of shadows and all that.

Hi, my name is Antonia Anthony.. i have recently just graduated from university.. i live in London, England by the way... i studied Criminology and i absolutely love to read. I love Classics and i must confess i do love the romance books as well but please dont judge me to harshly!! I love Shakespeare, not just because his plays and sonnets are amazing but what makes him amazing to me, is the way he uses words, he is amazing at wordplay.. but for all my reading i am an absolutely bad speller...so forgive me if i dont spell to well on. I play the violin.. i have been playing since i was 12 and i am 22 now. I love music.. my two favourite books are by Chinua Achebe.. "Things fall apart" and "The Arrow of God". He presents Old Africa in a way that forces your imagination to take you there, whether, you the reader, wishes to go or not. I love movies as well because, if done well, can be excellent visual books.I love movies which has witty and clever dialogue, like Guy Ritchie's "Snatch". I too get facinated by random stuff and i am full of random information.

I actually joined this site as a way to post my poems somewhere. I had them on MySpace, but they apparently have a waiver stating they can do whatever they want with anything posted there, and I don't like that. So, I posted some poetry on www.online-poetry.com, the poetry extension of the Literature Network.

Nice to meet you! Can't wait to see the works of the many incredible writers on this site!! ;) :D

Hello people... I have just registered although I've been aware of this site's existence for quite a while; Only now I felt like being part of this community and joining in intellectual discussions you seem to have :D
I have graduated from high school an official literature nerd, a year ago, and now I'm hoping to get accepted into university to study English Language and Literature...
I consider myself a big fan of reading... and art in general. I enjoy reading anything at all from literature to philosophy to psychology... I've had the pleasure and privilege of studying 3 of Shakespeare's plays during high school, I think the man is a literary genius.
Anyway I don't want to bore anyone, so, just a quick intro and hello
=)

Hello! I am a new member from Bloomington, IN. I'm currently an undergrad @ IU and found this site while "working" at a local financial institution. Yeah, so "work" is a strong word, and I really don't do any save what I do in class. I read constantly, and am currently reading "Notes from the Underground" by F. Dostoyevsky, "Sea and Sardinia" by D.H. Lawrence, and a J. Swift collection of short stories. When I'm not at work or school or engrossed with one book or another, I spend time making good use of my Netflix subscription, making good use of the company of my girlfriend, playing racquetball, and when I'm free of time demands and constraints, I like to write and listen to music. Fresh endeavours this year include riding my bike to work and school in lieu of using my car, recycling paper, cans and bottles, cultivating a few lilies, and I will begin brewing beer this week.

Wow. I'm a pretty shy guy, and that's most I've written about myself...ever, so now its on to either the boards or those author bios: I love it!

Hello.

I have been posting here for a couple of weeks, and it has just occurred to me that I have not really introduced myself. I just got out of high school, having been elected by my peers to be awarded the "Unanimously Unique" award, from which you might reasonably surmise that I am the supreme nerd of the Class of 2006. I have been reading, and loving, a good deal of Henry James lately, for a "3x1" project (three novels by one author) for one of my senior English classes, and so have fashioned a username after His Awesomeness. I really like the discussions on this site, and have actually just discovered all of the PAM games (my mother's name, incidentally), which are all great fun. I look forward to many a happy post with you all!

This is all a little strange - I have signed up in a web forum for years and I've never been involved in one specifically for literary discussion so I'm quite excited.

I'm Hna, I'm 17 and live in England. I currently study English Literature, History and French and am intending to study History and Literature at Uni next year.

I look forward to posting with you all and seeing what you all have to say.

:D
