I just stumbled across this site today looking for information about Dante. When I was a child, my mother (who has a Phd in English Literature) had a prose version of Dante's Inferno. I don't know if it was for children or not, but I read it as a child. I have the most beautiful memories of reading that book while munching on animal crackers. I desperately want to find that book, but I don't know who the editor was.

It had beautiful black and white pictures (I remember pictures of Francesca and Paolo in the whirlwind, and whichever sinners have their heads on backwards--I think it was the Sodomites, not that I had any idea what that was at 8 years old!-- in particular), and I read it over and over and now would like to share it with my own child.

Does anyone have the faintest clue as to which book I am referring?

Other than reading Dante, I read just about everything I could get my hands on as a kid. I liked Sci fi, Tolkein, CS Lewis, the Bible, Marx (I had a very progressive group of nuns running my grade school) and biographies. Istill like all those genres, but rarely get to read them now.

So, when I grew up (which was a long time ago) I got a Master's in Divininty, and now...I get paid to be Catholic! (I am a Director of Religious Ed)

Most of my reading now is theologically or scripturally based. Sometimes I read trashy modern novels, which I don't think qualify as literature, but I enjoy them to wind down. I read "Shutter Island" (instead of seeing the movie) and "Wiseguys" last week.

Well, I am currently studying to become an Engineer, but something i want to do before i grow out of my creativity is write a novel. I have some pretty crazy dreams and excursions in my imagination.

I speak awkwardly most of the time because my dad (who is an engineer, and he would talk to me like a coworker)...

I hope to learn, improve my writing style, and enjoy some new short stories from this forum.

Hello,

I'm a new member and I thought I might as well introduce myself. I love to read and I've recently taken up writing again.

My all time favorite book would be The Catcher in the Rye. Other favorite books include Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, 1984, and Slaughterhouse-Five. I also love the writings of Henry David Thoreau and enjoy reading about Eastern philosophy.

I am glad that I found this forum and look forward to reading more posts and getting to know the people here.

Howdy newcomers!

This is a great site, and the best way to start enjoying it is to participate in the discussions. You might enjoy the "general literature" forum and "general chat" forum, both of which have a strong and welcoming community.

So start a thread or post a reply.

Oh, and paradoxical: the more Thoreau fans the better, I say!

Hello to you all.

Apart from tapping sounds punctuating the silence as I write these words to be sent from my laptop Notebook PC, the only other noises I can hear are the soft whirring of the computer's internal fan, and the wind breezing through the row of poplar trees across the gully which my small office at the back of our house overlooks.

I am interested in writing that creates word pictures and imparts a sense of progress, thereby transporting the reader into dimensions of the mind that for various reasons, may be either safely familiar or as yet unexplored.

The concept that we each have a definable calling and vocation in life occupies me from time to time and I like to examine what it is that determines how well a person does having found their purpose in life.

Hey everyone,
I come from the sunny island of Singapore...well, a pretty boring place, so there's not much to say about it. I've always been fascinated by the brilliant insights some people give when analysing a text or poem, which is why I was looking for an online literature forum. By the way, researching George Orwell's 1984 brought me here, and it may have been one of the most depressing books I've ever read.

Hello I'm Colby, I stumbled upon this site 4 long years ago for a reason to join but was absent for the longest time. Maybe it's time to recap or refresh on why I came here? I am 24, I graduated back in 2007 High School that makes me like somewhat educated but not quite University, is that alright? Sure it is, I just want to figure out what I want to become and figuring out takes time is all.

I read books that are of thrillers, science fiction, fantasy, some self help books, books on fiction and maybe some non-fiction. It depends on what I want to read, if I want to read about Wicca to reading about other subject I think it's just fine and dandy.

I'm just glad I came across this site and found out how to get back here, have a good day and peace.

You all seem like very interesting people, so I thought I may as well add a little blurb about myself. I'll be honest in admitting that I did not read everyone's posts though...but here it goes!

Very soon I will be graduating from high school and I am enthralled that I will finally be able to study what I want in college. I have already been accepted into the school of my choice and look forward to majoring in Interior Design and minoring in French. I am an avid reader, though not of the classics; I prefer fiction novels and mainly fantasy. My other interests are art and music. I have a broad appreciation for art and enjoy discussing it as well. My hope in joining this forum is to learn more. Also, I figure my received knowledge will come in very handy in school.

There you have it! A short paragraph about myself :)

Hey, I'm Miki!

I love to read everything and am glad I finally found a literature forum not dominated by Twilight fangirls.

I love dystopia novels, like George Orwell and Aldous huxley, and have always been addicted to Jack London. All of his stuff is amazing.

Ad with current literature... meh. Not too into it. There's a couple series I read like Warriors and Maximum Ride and I read individual novels sometimes. But they aren't as good as the classics.

I'm also big on vampires. But UGH I hate Twilight! I like authors like Anne RIce and Bram Stoker.

I can't wait to meet some new lit freaks like me on this board.

Cheers!

Hello, my name is D.S. and I'm an alcoholic... Oh wait, wrong group! Sorry, sorry... do over.

Hello, my name is D.S. and I'm a novelist and poet and joined due to one book but I see that there are all kinds of engaging topics on these boards so good on that. Hmm, what else? I've a novel published with a very small (now defunct, in fact) press and another novel finished that I've query letters out to agents as we speak. (Trying to avoid the small soon-to-be defunct presses this time around :wink5:.) As well, I'm about 50 pages shy of finishing a third novel. I've read my poetry in NYC, Boston, Seattle, Chicago and here at home in Louisville KY among other exotic locales between here and the moon. I'm awaiting yet another notice that I've lost the Yale Younger for the sixth straight year so that's exciting and something to keep me going. I also write essays on varying subjects of whatever interest strikes me although about half of them tend to be about the seventh art. My knowledge base on film, literature and writing are all self-taught through willful exposure to countless films and works of literature and 20,000+ hours of writing. What else? Outside the paradigm of my deleterious enslavement to art I enjoy cooking and riding my bike. That's me in a thousand words or less.

Some favorites of the various mediums are Moby Dick, Lolita, A Confederacy of Dunces, The Great Gatsby, Daemon, Huckleberry Finn, Shelby Foote's Civil War trilogy, Wuthering Heights, The God of Small Things, Life of Pi, H.L. Mencken's The American Language (I'm an amateur lexicographer but more on that later perhaps), Wallace Stevens, Phillip Larkin, Walt Whitman, Anne Sexton, William Carlos Williams, Neruda, Lorca, Dorothy Parker, Fritz Lang's M, Blade Runner, Unforgiven, Nights of Cabiria, Ran, Tron, Casablanca, Touch of Evil and No Country For Old Men (although, ironically, that's the only McCarthy novel I did not enjoy).

I joined to discuss Anna Karenin but I'll save that for the AK message boards.

And I'll leave you all with one of my poems. Not my best poem but a damn good one and one I really enjoy (which is just about all that matters in art):

NIGHT PASSING

The night is in that special way
blacker than her darkest prime
as all the birds asleep
beneath a cloud of hush
and the moon it shines
a pendant about her neck
innocent and white again
over the hill and tree,
the forgotten colors all black,
barkscars of pick and axe.
She is alive and full of age
like the windlifted roof
she leaks into the window
and everywhere she is at ease
across the desk, a lady in lust,
in the chair, over the bed
curled about herself like a cat,
an eye of black, a wing of bat.
There is no place she will not go
where there is nothing
where there is no one
she is there already in waiting
at a cave undiscovered,
a drawer rusted shut,
in the mouth that never opens
on the tongue that feels no breath.
She is the one to whom
the moon was promised
and even yet delivered.
There is no diva but her
no madonna, no mother
in waiting without her.
She is swollen with everything
time suckles from her breasts
the starlightmilk of nipples
gathering in her belly
the child she raises from darkness,
a spider of gold
that eats its lovely mother
and dies in one day
from the guilt.

Alright, I know my hello kind of carried on. I've never been accused of being pithy.

Hello, hello. I am but a drop in the bucket of new members here, I am sure, but why not introduce myself anyway and get a feel for posting on this forum? I'll give the rundown of my favorite literature.

I have differing interests in books - I read children and adult literature alike. My favorite literature remains to be tragic stories, and, admittedly, Young Adult novels. My favorite YA novels include The Perks Of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, just to name a few.

My favorite authors. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (who doesn't enjoy Holmes?), Neil Gaiman (The Graveyard Book and American Gods were my favorites), George Orwell, Edgar Allan Poe, and so on. I won't ramble.

I read a lot of different things, and I particularly enjoy diary/journal stories (Go Ask Alice, Anne Frank, Perks). I sought out this forum as a place to read about reading, to get some good ideas of what to read next, and to find a place for intelligent discussion.

It's nice to meet you all. I'll probably lurk for a while before making any grand posts.

First
I was desperately looking for a book I haven't read yet, and googeling brought me to a thread on this forum. I have never been into forums, but now I give it a shot. I suspect I will be doing more reading than writing.

It happens a lot, that I get a desperate need to read a book that is about something I am living at the moment, or something that has the same kind of breaking movement or atmosphere that I can somehow relate to. Or some book treating any existensial issue I am wresteling with at the moment. And either it is not to be found, or it has not been written yet.

I hope I am going to be able to write some of those stories that I am looking for that does not seem to be anywhere. But actually I would rather find them. Remains to be seen how I will go about doing that on a forum.

Second
I am both working and studying. Literary theory and aesthetical philosophy in the continental tradition is my main focus. I work with pictures. On and off, autonomous. I am a priviliged white middle-class-moving-down completely stereotypical arty woman, impulsively always landing in trouble without quite meaning to. Not quite. I've had a slightly above average interesting life so far. And I've been reading a lot while I was at it. Currently on my feet, not quite landed.

Third
I have: curiosity (killed the cat, luckily still some lives left), enthusiasm, naivity and brains (a very strange combintation, makes life interesting), love and care (I find people likable and loveable almost always, but do not mistake me for a hippie), restlessness.
Some very different authors everyone should try out: Bulgakov, Iain Pears, Steinbeck, Julio Cortazar, Tove Jansson, Arundhati Roy
My favourite philosophers and thinkers: Martin Heidegger, Jaques Derrida, Roland Barthes, Paul Deman, Helen Cixous, Jaques Lacan, W.J.T. Mitchell

That was my idea of an introduction. I will be reading about you now! :)

In the attic of my mind, among the trunks and boxes, there are two guiding, creative principles:

• The flower rises among the rocks and weeds, not because of what it should be, but because of what it wants to be.
• The successful creative life, from moment to moment, is a changing Gestalt with elements that come and go. Gathering the elements is a journey of discovery that begins and ends with one step.

One day I was born, the next day I was 81, from the in-between here are some highlights:

After two years in kindergarten, I've decided to get on with my life. Not knowing the difference, I spoke a mixture of German and English, elided, screwd-up my diction and syntax. But I've learned to translate what the teacher said into what I could understand and do the same for her.

Saturday Night Magazine seller, paper boy, horseradish grinder and bottler, liquor truck driver's helper, cinema usher, library page, Army Photographer, President of the local chapter of an National Honorary Art Fraternity, honor graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and I did much more.

I began as an Industrial Designer for a kitchen cabinet manufacturer located next to a pig farm. Then I moved into the fields of marketing, education, publishing; I advance from a Senior Graphic Designer to a Art Director for McGraw-Hill Magazines, then at 60 got a job for ten years at Loyola Press as Design-Production Manager.

13 years later, and after exhibiting on Canyon Road, Santa Fe, I decided to become a writer because I've read Robinson Davies, Gabriel Carcía Márquez, Mckee's Story Principles.

Hello, I'm Walter. I like old books and contemporary classical music. Other interests include photography, history, typography, skateboarding and doing things for no apparent reason. I have little ideals and even less ambition. To me, reading is a balance between escapism and truth. I generally avoid the extremes of both approaches.

My late parents and grandparents were devoted left-wing communists and they had a lot of wonderful ideas. One of the ideas was: a worker, even the lowest rank, has an obligation to cultivate one´s mind by reading and studying. Most of their ideas I did not abduct, and they are out of fashion anyway, but this one I selected to be taken seriously. I became a forest worker who reads a lot.

English is not my mother´s tongue, it is an odd language called Finnish, and I read Russian and Swedish as well. I left literature written in English aside for years. Recently I came back into this language by reading Irvine Welsh´s novels. So much about uplifting one´s standards... But I am glad I did.

My workmates are not usually readers. Well, in general I chat in the forest with birds, mosquitos, mooses and snakes. So I look for a change to discuss about books and fiction and words and whatever, even though I am far more handy with the chainsaw than I am with the pencil (or pad).

Hello all,
I haven't a soul to discuss books with. Tragic! I am here now, so hopefully you all will be a remedy to me. Outside of the Bible I read about 95% fiction (no jokes please :.)
In my reading I am eternally searching for the perfect fusion of literary merit, interesting plot, and enthralling characters. I read purely for pleasure. If I learn something it is a bonus!

Hi all,

I'm an avid lover of fiction, mock me if you will ;)

I like to read a range of books from more childrens to very gruesome adult. I am a huge fan of Terry Pratchett, Karin Slaughter, Kelley Armstrong. I love the classics and the oldies, I enjoy the works of Washington Irving, Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I love a book that can make me laugh, cry and put it under my pillow in fear!

I love people suggesting me new books :) And am lucky enough to live near an old bookstore, where everything costs less than £3! Its one of those old ones where, if your not careful, you will lose yourself in it :)

I was reading Luke 24:13.................Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem.

Question: After recognizing Christ the two spent the night in Emmaus before going to Jerusalem. Who were the 2 followers of Jesus? One of the followers was Cleopas. Who was the other follower walking with Cleopas to Jerusalem?

Thanks.

There's a "Religious Texts" forum on this site. You might get quicker, more informed, and more enthusiastic responses on that forum. If you go to the home page and glance down you'll can't miss it.

Hello everybody, It's nice that we are getting so many new forum members who share with us their precious views. There should be a place to introduce yourself and say hi; and this is it. :D

Come on and tell us about yourself. :D What are your hobbies? What are your favourite books? And also share with us everything else you would like to tell us about yourself.

Have a nice time browing the wonderful world of books and book-worms! :)

:) I am a high-school student, and I study Extension English as a subject in year eleven. I chose that subject, because, well, I've always enjoyed English, and was moderately good at it (not straight A's, but good enough), but I wanted to advance my studies and excel in the subject. I also love Drama; it's my favorite and best subject, and it's what makes me going throughout the school week.

I LOVE Harry Potter - more so than anything else in the world - and I have loved it since I was seven, when my parents threw me a Harry Potter-themed party. I still want one for my eighteenth. I guess that's the 'inner child' in me; I think a part of me will always believe in magic, fantasy, etc, because it's a form of escapism for me. ;) I also love the LOTR movies, and the film 'LoveActually.' I only like British romedy films, because they're actually funny. However, I also love the T.V. show 'FRIENDS.' That's the only television program I watch. I love books by Jodi Picoult and Stephen King, and adored 'Little Women' by Louisa May-Alcott, and of course, Jane Austen. :hurray:

I've enjoyed writing a mini-autobiography, so I'm going to go and explore the rest of this swell site. :D

Hi everyone

Pleased to find a community of like-minded people who love the written word.

I'm an avid reader - but am only just now discovering the delights of poetry (reading it and trying to write some as well).
My other keen interests are music, the outdoors (the hint's in my user name) and movies.

I'm looking forward to sharing some thoughts with you and hopefully learning more about literature.

Thanks :confused5:

In the fashion of things, ill introduce myself too. I am in my last year of college and i take art, photography, english, literature and political and legal studies along with the compulsory mathmatics which is not a specialty.

I love reading all forms of literature and no doubt i love writting my own pieces. i tend to shy away from publishing my own work due to fear of what others will think and also self doubt which i am wondering how many others also have had self doubt of there own work?

Anyway thankyou Pensive - clever and welcoming idea

Hi, I'm Sérgio! I'm Portuguese, Clinical Psychologist and I'm 37! I entered this site mainly to discuss the Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov! As a curiosity, I have to say that the best book I've ever read was Genesis Revisited - Is Modern Science Catching Up with Ancient Knowledge, by Zecharia Sitchin! I advise everybody this book... it's a must read!

Hello all!

I'm Heather, but I go by a collection of names, ranging from 'brat' to 'auntie', (even though I'm not really an aunt...) and 'Heath' to 'Hekele'. Call me whatever you want, after all 'What's in a name?"

I was born and raised in Michigan, but after high school I ran as far as I could and moved to the furthest reaches of North America, Alaska. I've been here for nearly three years, attending college as an English major, and I have no plans of leaving. I'm in love with it up here.

Even when our 'April showers' are the final snow storms of the year.

I'm an anime nerd, not a fanatic. I play video games, not obsess over them. I play d20-based rpgs, not dress up like an elf every week and honestly believe I'm a level 9 paladin. (I despise paladins...I play druids and warlords.) I gleefully indulge in daydreams, not 'space out'. I write for pleasure, not for personal gain, (though I would embrace a combination of the two.) I'm chubby, and I really, REALLY don't care what others think about it.

I'm an individual. I embrace my individuality. My writing reflects this. Every character I've ever invented has reflected a facet of myself. Even the villains. No human is squeaky clean; we all have a dark side we hide from both ourselves and the world. My greatest flaws are envy and wrath, so most of my villains reflect this. My greatest strengths are my abilities to hope and love, and most of my heroes embody this. I'm also a combination of many other things, and I embrace those shades of my personality as well.

There you go. This is me. I can't wait to meet more people and show them more of that.

Hi Everyone, on this beautiful Spring night. I'm just about to retire from work at the end of this week. And that's wonderful. Poor, but wonderful. And now for the shocking part.....I've never blogged before...and well, I came upon this site trying to research a poem by Alexander Pushkin. I became mesmorized and realized all I've been missing. I used to read the classics and really miss doing so. For light reading I love P.G. Wodehouse...and English Murder mysteries. Of course Christie. I used to read quite a bit of Russian Lit...so, dramatic. And now, maybe more time to do so again. And hopefully, I'll learn something from you. All those great quotes....want to see more and look them up. Sorry, I rambled a bit. Nice to meet you. Margie

“That is one ugly ****ing table”

The other day I was talking to Gabe, a friend of mine, when he casually pointed out that I don’t actually do most of the things I say or propose myself to do. And then I curiously asked “Like what?” and then he went on with a full list of things, chores, suggestions, missions, quests, bets, self improvement, public improvement, writings, speeches, talks and any other action or activity that would simply end in the future without something relevant to talk about. Not to mention that most of the examples were meaningless ****. ‘’Oh and like that time where you said you were going to take your dog to the park and actually didn’t take him because you had to do something else”, or “Like the time when you said you and your family where going to the beach with your cousin for spring break but didn’t go because instead you went to Butt**** Nowhere” and on, and on… So then I started thinking how this guy could recall that much events about my life that I could hardly remember.
So I let my mind drift of from the main of the conversation and went to one of those “dead spots”. The kind when you are mindlessly staring at a table while you are picturing how “X”girl that sits next to you in the classroom would would look naked. This only, of course, if she is hot. ‘Cause forgets thinking about a girl naked if she isn’t hot, in each person’s own definition of the word. And you can go on thinking now about how her skin would feel. And how she might react to your preferences over meaningless **** like floor tile colors; blue over green, green over yellow,” holy **** if I have to choose only between yellow and hazelnut I would definitely go for wood instead”.
And then you think about how would wood look in your kitchen. And then you drift back to “X” girls tits. And now her personality. And now her pussy. And you go on and on interchanging subjects and thoughts and when you least expect it, now you are picturing how “X” girl might be if she was your girlfriend. And how would it be if she married you, and had a life and kids together over the years. And maybe grow old with her next to you to compare the scars of a well lived life, or maybe she and you got divorced mainly because of that fight you would have about her parents.
****, maybe she doesn’t even have parents. And you are still staring with dead eyesight at the ****ing table. And what do you know now you are thinking of “Y” girl’s ***. But before you go on in your thought pattern again. You kind of realize: “Holy **** for how long I have been staring at this ****ing table ”but suddenly your friend or a passerby stranger says“ Hey!” Followed by a “You didn’t answer my question” or “You alright?” “What are you thinking about?”. And then, there I was in my dead spot. When my friend says “What, you thinking about what I said?”. And then I couldn’t for **** remember what was I thinking about.

And all of my thinking happened in approximately five short seconds. But to me it was a lifetime thinking about something that I know I just thought a moment ago before Gabe asked me his question. It’s in my brain down there, I know for sure, and maybe I got a glimpse of it before it went away. I’ll think “Oh yeah something about what would happen if I killed the building’s secretary by accident”.
And then the next day I will try to remember the thought again but the only thing that would come back to me would be “Was it about something Gabe said?” “He asked me a question didn’t him?” And then I’ll go through my day without remembering the event of even thinking about that it took place. When then in about a week or so I will remember about that time when I tried to recall the thought I was pondering while staring at the ****ing table when Gabe asked me a question. And I will simply go “Agh, how important could that have been”. Without realizing that maybe, just maybe, in a way I was about to cure cancer.
But hey, the gorgeous face of that woman I passed while getting to Gabe took some space in my thought pattern and ****ed it up somehow. “Ah, whatever” And then I’ll go back to the answer to Gabe’s question about what was I thinking of.
And I will casually respond “Nah not really”. And then I will simply move on to pointing out that I actually don’t give a **** about what I do or don’t do. And suggested to Gabe that maybe he could spend a little more time finding what **** HE doesn’t do, instead of stalking my every move while those gay thoughts knocked on his cortex. He took my answer as a crude response. And said that I didn’t have to be an *******. Like most of the time, I don’t know if what I say is offensive, or crude, or bold ; or if it is that the people I chat with are too sensitive.
After getting home. This whole thing happened back then. A half hour to reality. A ****ing year for me. I guess relativity is a *****. I moved on to more important things to think about. Like what should I do tonight.

Anyway, for a little bit about me, I'm an amateur writer with little experience but a lot of love for it. I'm probably one of the younger writers on this site. My other passions are soccer and playing the violin. I also love to read, and by the way Agatha Christie is amazing. I've only posted two things on here so far, a short story called "Initiation" and a poem called "the smoker." I'm trying to get them published on The Slam, so any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton! :biggrin5:

Accept this, so late this night, as

Deep within my soul, I have to admit I wanted yet denied

Hi.

I don't know how to partake in communities. Either I have nothing to say, or I am just shy, I don't know which but I do know that I will spend all my life pressing my nose up against a window, envying the sense of togetherness within. I can't ever really join in.

Never mind that negative outburst though, I shall try to participate here and be as happy and jolly as anyone. :) I am just a bit overtaken today by that horrid sense of unbelonging and loneliness.

My favorite author is Dostoevsky, for his amazing insight into the human mind, and for his passion.

Hello everyone, I'm Katharen, but most people call me Kat or Kitty.

I grew up on the west coast of Australia in Perth and I adore it to this day. Now however I'm a college freshman attending school in America, which has captured a place in my heart as well.

My writing tends to reflect the natural discord in my personality and in all people. Every piece of work, my stories, music, and poetry all hold part of me in them. I am the villain and and the innocent child, but show me someone who does not hold the potential for both, and I will show you a liar.

I am the still water on a calm day, and the winds that will call up the raging storm. I am an angel and a demon, a nightmare and a dream. I am all and nothing, I am simply me.

I am a lover of 19th and early 20th century literature. I am in the middle of Middlemarch and loving the cadence Eliot's prose.

I have retired (artist) to having a joy job which is teaching knitting - intricate, lacy, beads - the more complicated the better.

Since retirement, i have decided to read all of the books i never got to in a prior life. Although i find that if i have read a book thirty years ago, i am a different person and relate to the book in an entirely different way. that is assuming i remember it from the first time.

i am also listening to "Learning to Listen to Music" a podcast from Yale, so i am filled with good music and good lit.

Hi all! Greymure (above) referred me to this forum - he said it's an interesting site with a lot of talented writers (I don't know if I fit that description - you'll have to decide that for yourselves). Anyway, my favorite thing to do is talk about writing - it's so much easier than the actual TASK of writing! I look forward to getting to know you all on the boards! (Oh - and my nic is Demeter's Daughter but that wouldn't fit, and Persephone was taken - hence the hideous spelling)

Hi all,

It is exciting to be here and it seems to be a really interesting site. I am here for the main reason that I may be needing this site for my lit studies and I hope someone will give me their views on matters that I may have to raise in my next post. English is my second language and as a mature age student, I feel that English can really twist my mind at times especially when it comes to analysing academic literature questions. Yep, mature age student, with three younger children and have not been back to uni for ages, and with nursing background, literature is totally out of my range. I'm currently studying Arts and currently taking up lit as one of my electives. So please helpppp. I will be posting my question in the appropriate thread in a minute.

Many thanks and it's great 2b here!

Cheers

Hi everybody,
I live in Germany in a village near a town... my favorite authors are amos oz, Khalil Gibran, Shakespeare, Dostovesky, Tolstoy... the list is endless in music, books, poetry....

and what can I say about my hobbies I like reading, living, being with with friends....
My favorite book is The Prophet from Khalil Gibran especially were it says that your children arent your children, all my successes, all my mistakes is compared to my parents but im my own person not them. I have alot from both of them but Im also something new, but this truth is so uncommon, but I wish I could call Khalil Gibran up and ask him what he means with all of that and whats being like to write such a amazing book and to know this things to have words for that I have no words for all of that...
My wishes for the future a being kind, being thoughtful, being present in the moment, every moment, reduces unneccessary stresses and laugh as much as possible... LOVE TO ALL HER IN THIS BOARD.... Take care....

Hi all,

I have been browsing these forums on and off for a few months and have finally become a member. I look forward to becoming more involved and having some great conversations about literature!

I am currently reading several books. A few of them are, "The Sixth Commandment" written by Lawrence Sanders and "The Last Cavalier" written by Alexander Dumas. I am enjoying them both although they are very polar.

I entertain my writing ideas as much as I can but am still a fledgling author trying to learn the basics. Any recommendations concerning how to better myself as a writer or resources I can take advantage of to do so would be great. I've found a few college level writing text books and I have been paging through them to help.

I've noticed that there is some discussion of art here as well; personally, I am a big fan of Renaissance art and Neoclassicism (although nothing beats a top notch discussion of Jean-Michel Basquiat or other modernist). Jacques-Louis David is certainly my favorite painter: his "Oath of the Horatti" is one of the most pleasing paintings both in design and message.

I look forward to chatting with everyone and learning from the community!

My name's Lee, and I hail from Brooklyn, New York, by way of Los Angeles County, California. My interest is the great works of literature, from Homer to Joyce Carol Oates. My knowledge of recent fiction is non-existent, though if a book is original and imaginative 'and' I can relate to it somehow, I'm interested.

Hi lit fans,

I'm just a struggling reader and would-be writer hoping to discuss literary issues with people like who might actually be interested in them. People like that can be hard to find!

Cheers.

So as I sit here sipping on my V8 Infusion (subtle indication of my extreme coolness), I will say first off that none of this information will be earth-shattering. However, most of you will want to know my favorite book or author, and not only do I not have either but I have to longing to discriminate like that! I could tell you who I DO NOT like, but only if you ask.

Let’s get the boring ‘recommended’ stuff out of the way early, shall we? Goals? I’m going to school to be a social worker. Check. My hobbies are for the most part listed above. I’m a little nerdy and like to have fun. My musical taste is eclectic. I’m a lyrical person, and music is important to me. I could go on for days, so we’ll just leave it at that. I will say that I think musical taste is a great indicator of the type of person someone is, to the core.

Martha Stewart is slightly irritating. George Carlin and Demetri Martin are the ****.

Scented candles could make even the room from Saw I a cheerful place to curl up with a book.

I like surprises and spontaneity. I do not like, however, when someone says they have a surprise and taunt you. Cruel and unusual punishment. Keep it a secret until you’re ready to reveal it, por favor.

I twirl my hair when I’m uncomfortable, bored, pissed, or deep in thought. It’s ridiculous.

Kids are awesome.

I prefer fake flowers. Real ones die, which is why they are sent to people who are in the hospital dying or funerals where people are already dead.

I like salty foods. My sweet tooth is undersized and overly sensitive. Ouch! Mexican rocks, especially the free chips and salsa before the meal. Coffee is a staple.

I enjoy writing, when I’m able to get my thoughts in order. As a writer, I despise censorship.

I think mostly in quotes. Song lyrics, good sayings I’ve heard along the road……….

“Girls just wanna have fun.” So, so true. Please don’t be boring. Think, talk, laugh, and have fun; and make me think, talk, laugh, and have fun. For example, some of the items on my list of things to do before I get too old and die: ice skate, bungee jump/skydive, go to a hockey game, roller blade all day, marry my best friend and love of my life, become a mother, take karate classes, ski/snowboard, snorkel, road trip around the U.S., start a charity….the list goes on.

“Be the change you want to see in the world.” I’m a social work major, so it follows that I’m big on volunteering. I feel for people less fortunate than I, and although my life is nowhere near perfect I know that I am lucky. I cry at those damned commercials of the sad little puppies in animal shelters looking for a home. It’s that intense. So probably you should be able to feel compassion as well. I give everything I can and sometimes more. I’ve gone on mission trips, donated blood and money…..And other anonymous deeds that shall not be revealed since the point of the deed is indeed the deed itself, not the recognition. (Record for the most use of the word ‘deed’ in one sentence?)

I'm looking forward to babbling with you! Drink more water. Learn something. Try something new and exciting that’s out of your element. And have an intensely fantastic day.

It’s nice to meet you. =^D

Hi, folks.

New to this forum, but not to forums generally or this site.

I think the site is awesome, although it can be a bit tough to read a book a screen at a time on a BlackJack II (although I've done it with a couple).

Anyway, just a quick hi, hope you're all doing great.

Don't know how much I'll be able to contribute seeing as the majority of the members on this are 15-29 year olds and I have shoes older than that! Been a published author since 1996. Second book was the very first group titles that were published by iUniverse, before everyone and their DOG jumped on the "I'm a published author" print-on-demand vanity press wagon.

Fiction titles: Red Wine for Breakfast and First Class Male - both now under contract with a literary agent. New novel Cry U.N.C.L.E., for those of you who may recall the spy spoof series of the 60's. Erotica, Journey to Dimension Nine 26 short stories. Lots of fun to research.

There are quite a few of us on board rather longer in the tooth than the stats would suggest.

Some kids either drop in for help with their homework or hang around to chat - nothing wrong with that. It's good to see them on a site like this. But on the Personal Poetry and Short Story threads there is a brilliant mix of ancient and ultra-mod. So by all means jump in when you're ready.

I'm really stoked to have found this place. I've only recently begun writing again after a four year military hiatus. I've been going through some of my old notebooks from high school and remembering just how serene and peaceful I used to feel after writing something. I've often dreamed of finding a place like this where fellow writers could review each others' works. And after reading a few posts and the wonderful feedback people have given I think I may have just died and gone to heaven. I am really looking forward to getting some interesting feedback on some of my pieces. Perhaps I will finally gain the insight I need. I'll be posting something soon and I can't wait! Thanks for having me.

I found this site while googling something and 'bam!' it took me here...so I joined about five minutes ago and here I is.
I am a retired Engineer {Senior Field Eng./CNN} and a tardy writer. Retirement is too much fun for me to slow down but I am an avid reader and am on a few sites such as this one. Thinking and learning keeps one young.

I absorb books like Bounty Towels, from most arenas of the publishing world, preferring Nonfiction, Bios, Gnostic writings and great books by great writers and count several known writers amongst my friends.
I am reading a good one now written by someone I met years ago in Ethiopia...'Underworld' by Graham Hancock. He had just finished 'The Sign and the Seal when we met and spent a week together. Awesome guy.

I am a Hermetic Gnostic but I don't let that stop me from most anything I set my mind to {haha, that's cause Hermeticism teaches that one can do anything and it's most true}

I have lived and worked in over forty countries yet am still missing two continents {Antartica and...Australia, of all places to have never gone}

Born near the crossroads {Clarksdale, Miss'ah-sippi}, my early life gave me a good grounding for the hardships of the world and the seeking of Knowledge {Gnosis}. So I got outta there as soon as possible.
I now live alone near Atlanta, Ga. and if I'm not here I'm on my Harley.

Hope I read some stimulating ideas here, I know I will. I usually spend a lot of time sojourning through the posts before I get myself involved so I will be reading all the posts that prick my little ears before making any comments. {unless I read one that I just have to say something about.}

Thank You and I look forward to browsing around a little now and a lot tonight.
Me bike, Pistas Zoe, is calling.

My name is Ein and I'm from Wet TN. I love to read, and happily classify myself as a bibliophile. I am currently working on amassing a very large collection of children's books, everything from Beatrix Potter to Frank L. Baum.
I have a special place in my heart for all books horse related, as I am a equine fanatic; and I'm obessed with Alice in Wonderland (this obession has been rampant since I was about five or six). In addition to reading I'm also into cooking, swimming, and sewing just to name a few hobbies. I look forward to talking with all of you! Hope you all have great days and good nights!

Hello people!

Found this forum, and after a few hours of lurking I realised I'd be stupid to not register. So, here I am, and I'm ready to talk about great literature!

To know a little bit about what I 'dig', my favourite writers are Raymond Carver, Anton Chekhov and Ernest Hemingway. I'm a huge fan of short stories, and I'm just beginning to write my own. Hopefully I'll begin to post some when I deem them worthy.

I'm developing a love for Science Fiction at the moment too, and I seem to be buying at least two SF books a week. I'm currently reading Dune and I can't believe it's a book I've not read before! I really admire Frank Herbert's writing style too, as it's completely active and straight to the point.

Anyway, I'm sure that was a lot of waffle right there, but anyhow, this is my hello message, and I look forward to talking to you all. :)

Hello,
I was excited to find a discussion of literature with such a passionate and involved group! I have recently started volunteering as a grantwriter for with a non-profit literary and arts magazine (same name as the handle if you're interested). I am thrilled with what they do and how they do it, but it has been difficult for me to see how it fits in a larger context since my training is in the sciences, my experience is in the military, and literature, poetry and art are all a bit foreign to me. I'm looking forward to broadening my horizons though!

I read "The Count of Monte Cristo" on a whim a while ago and was absolutely shocked at how captivating the story was. I have a sneaking suspicion that there are more thrilling and thought provoking books out there and I'm am more than content to lurk, learn, and add to my reading list :)

Nice to meet all of you! If you have any titles that need to go on my list, I'd love to hear them.

Dune is an amazing book! I read it in eighth grade for a school project and I don't think I have stopped reading science fiction since. I adore Jo Clayton (a very different style of writing your basic adventure story in the stars) and Spider Robinson (just brilliant), find Larry Niven to be a little methodical if a great idea man, and have recently started on Gene Wolfe's Long Sun Cycle and am really enjoying it.

I should get into science fiction again. I used to do nothing but read science fiction when I was a kid (younger than sixteen or so), but I kind of got out of that when I started reading "respectable" literature. I started raiding my dad's bookshelves, and he had Hemingway, Steinbeck, Aldous Huxley, Chekov, Gogol, and more modern stuff like Pynchon. And for a long time, as an adult, I pretty much stopped reading fiction and stuck to biography, history, popular science, and so on.

So who are the really good science fiction writers today?

I've not read it, but I have this on my list to read:

I saw a favourable review for it in The Guardian, and it sounds really interesting. Quite slipstream too. I haven't heard of the author before either.

Thom - The summer between high school and college I read, went to the beach and went running, and that was all I did. It was the best summer ever - enjoy it! And of course, all those excellent titles you come across you should share them here :) That Kraken book looks fabulous!

MinstrelBard - Just scanning some of the more recent titles on my shelves I'd pick Orson Scott Card (the Ender's Game series, prequels, sequels and spinoffs), Philip K. Dick, Alan Dean Foster. I can't think of the author of Snow Crash, but that is an excellent book as well. There's plenty out there I'd just pick an interesting looking cover and get started :)

Hi Wolf23 - You mentioned military novels... I'm going to leave this here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/jun/12/geoff-dyer-war-reporting In the course of the article he discusses some incredible books. I'd also add On Killing to that list, I don't remember seeing it in there

Hi everyone,

I am here to post one of my poem and I am looking forward to everyone's comments and feedbacks. I love writing but I rarely do so. Because, I feel Iam not good at it. Please pass on your sincere comments so that I can improve. Thank you so much.

Here is the poem:
Title: Life's Lessons!

When did I forget, It was not easy;
When did I forget, It was not fun,
Thought I learned this long time when I hit the mountain and I -
I hurt my knees only to blame to be blind and novice.
But Here I am, Once again - stand like an innocent child;
Simple as she can think, Mountains are way back gone!
Makes her way through the darkest clouds, tired and shattered
Thought she just learned it last time when she cried her heart out,
And secretly places the note in her life's lesson book.
When did I forget, It was not easy;
When did I forget, It was not fun,
When did I forget, It was life and all these are its learnings
And with every passing day, I get better
And with every trip, I get stronger.

Just when I believe I have learned the way to live, life changes and I m left the same as I started off…..... The more the things change, the more I m the same…..... It seems that my life is a constant irony of maturity and regression,..... but my perception of progress is based on the illusion that things out there are going to remain the same and that, at last, I have managed to gain a little control….. But there shall never be means to ends, only means…. And i see myself as means…. I m what I started with, and when it is all done with I shall be all that is left of me!

Theres a part of me that wants to write, a part of me that wants to theorize, a part that wants to teach, a part that want to live, a part that wants to love… To force myself into just a single role, to settle down to be just one thing in life, would kill off significant parts of me…...
rather, I recognize that I live now and only now, and I shall do what I want to do this moment and not what I had decided was the best for me yesterday.

Hello all,

I'm pleased to have found this site and look forward to many interesting discussions. I'd have to say that my three favorite books right now are Finnegans Wake, Tropic of Cancer, and Siddhartha, but I suppose this list is never finite. I am a writer, musician, director, and painter. I studied little in school, opted for a life of travel and squalor, and have never regretted a moment of it. For it is in life - the brutal living of it - that true meaning and mirth can be found.

Anyhoo; it's nice to meet you all.

I'm currently a college student living in a small but wonderful town. I enjoy reading when I have the leisure, walking barefoot through the grass at night, and black coffee. I reckon it to be time I tipped my hat and said hello to my fellow literature lovers.

I'm hoping to meet new people here, as well as discuss literature and hear other people's opinion on the topics I find interesting.
Oh, and my name is Lidija!

Hello everyone,
I am a new member here. This forum is simply terrific!

I'd like to discuss the works of Paul Bowles, who lived and wrote extensively about Tangier and Morocco. I'd like also to get some help about a German book I'm looking for; the book is titled Die Short Stories Von Paul Bowles: 1939-1990, by Elke Stracke-Elbina.

Thanks in advance

Just want to say Hello. Just joined forum.

A little about me:
I love to read classic and contemporary literary fiction, history, and theory, write, and analyze. I prefer books that tackle society with wit and satire: particularly -
The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer
Sense and Sensibility, Austen
The Pickwick Papers, Dickens
The Virgin Suicides, Eugenides
The Emperor’s Children, Messud
The Children’s Book, Byatt

I’ve recently become exceedingly interested in the theories, philosophies, and political/social movements of the late Victorian / early Modern periods. If anyone has any book suggestions, I’d love to hear.

Looking forward to talking books and meeting new “book” friends.

Oh and maybe another about Chekhov's Short Stories :)

Hello.

I've been here a couple of months now but made no introduction when i signed up because I wasn't sure whether I would stick around, but now I've tested the water and found the temperature to be just to my liking!

What do I like reading? Here's a sample:

Fyodor Dostoevsky - Brothers Karamazov (just finished)
Crimethinc Collective - Days of War, Nights of Love (currently reading)
Herman Hesse - Steppenwolf (next on the shelf)

An eclectic mix, I'm sure you'll agree ;)

I am really a novice at blogging. This is the first time I've ever tried so I hope it goes well!

My name is Krissy. I live in the beautiful country of New Zealand with my husband, three children, two dogs, four cats and three chickens.

I came across this website by accident but, as an avid reader, thought it could steer me to some great reading. I have yet to try any of the forums. I promise myself that I will have a good look at home but I have to prise the kids off the computer first!

Any crash course for dummies would be appreciated in assisting me to find my way around and become more involved.

Hi, err, well, erm.

So hello then.

I was looking for references to the D.H. Lawrence piece called 'Self Pity', as I am using it in a presentation and wanted to ensure that I my information was not erroneous.

anyhow... This forum popped up and, after some reading, I decided that this may be a nice place to occasionally visit.

I don't know much about literature, although I am a professional Technical Author (which means I definitely don't know much about literature), but I do love to read and write, and enjoy communicating with like-minded folks.

Be well.

Hello :] I'm not actually new here but it's been so long since I've been on I thought I would reintroduce myself.

My name is Adorerodio (Dio for short), I am female- don't get confused by the name. I just graduated high school and I like to call myself a poet. I frequented, and plan to frequent again, the poetry threads- especially the picture poetry contest. I love to read- no specific genre or author, anything really. Tolkien, John Green (go nerdfighters!), Alcott, Austen, etc etc. I'm going to college to study Elementary Education and become a teacher.

So there you go. I haven't been on because I have been exceptionally busy and I also waste too much time on FB. :]

Maybe I'll see you around! :}

Hello,
I just discovered this site because having arrrived at work, I realized I'd left my ragged old copy of David Copperfield in the car. I'd intended to re-read and re-remember what happened when Aunt Betsey showed up broke & destitute.
It's only my 3rd or 4th time around with this, my favorite book, so I was a bit anxious to keep on with the flow. So I just Googled looking for an on-line text and found myself here.
A very happy discovery!
I'm overjoyed to find a place like this to see the different interpretations of CD's characters and their comparisons to ourselves and each other.
Thank you!

Hi All,

Recently I was in the middle of reading Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain and was so baffled that I sat straight up and said, "Surely there must be a forum for this kind of confusion." This was the first site that came up when I googled forums for literature, and I'm hoping that all of you can help me out.

By the way, I am mad about coffee and dark chocolate and photography, and I have absolutely no idea who my favorite author is. A few of my favorite books are by Walker Percy, Robert Penn Warren, Tolstoy, and Dostoyevsky. And Mann is growing on me.

Hi, I'm thelightofday. I was thinking of Snow Patrol lyrics when I came here. I go to college, and I'll be getting my Associate's in Liberal Arts when I'm done. I'm going to transfer to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for my BFA in Writing, so if I get in, I'll be happy about that.

I like to engage in debate in the most humane, non-degrading way possible. I'll act like a decent person to you no matter how you act towards me--but that doesn't mean you get to walk all over me, either.

I do what I can, and I always try my best no matter what. :)

I'm nineteen years old. I live in the United States, in New Jersey. That's as much geographical info as you're going to get from me. :)

Anyway, this is long enough, so I'm going to explore some more and maybe I'll see more people on the way. :)

Howdy everyone!

I joined the forum to mainly lurk, for I enjoy reading other people's opinions and such; but before I accidentally reply to someone I thought I'd introduce myself.

I'm a student/care-taker who is slowly (slowly) making the way towards a degree in English. I'm looking to teach in high school. My real love is philosophy, mainly hermeneutics (hence the name), but I've always been a reader since I was a kid (mostly the bible and comic books). I tend to be more of a thinker than a reader; I highly enjoy the presence of books more than I do what's in them!

Hello, I'm Kaprekar (that's not my real name) and I am someone who used to read a lot and then got out of the habit when I had my children. I'm now trying to catch up, and re-discover what I used to read, and also read new books. My way back in has been via Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South and another literature forum. My favourite authors include Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope, Elizabeth Gaskell, the Brontes, John Buchan, in more recent years I have been reading some American authors such as John Irving and Michael Chabon. I live in the UK, near London. I am also starting to be interested in reading some historical novelists initially Georgette Heyer and Bernard Cornwell.

I do also like theatre and have been having a go at acting myself by joining a local theatre group. Sadly young children and shortage of funds have made it difficult to go out much to see professional productions, but in the past I used to particularly enjoy trips to Stratford or London to see RSC productions such as a Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest, Julius Caesar, etc. I also love musical theatre.

I am a certified hatha yoga instructor as well. I mostly enjoy reading historical fiction. This summer I took on and just finished War and Peace and loved it! I noticed the book of the month and that seems like an interesting aspect of this site to me. Particularly the current book.

What's up?

I'm 28, from Long Island. I graduated a few years ago with a bachelor's in political science from Coastal Carolina University, in Myrtle Beach. I spent a year teaching English in Korea, and now I'm back in Myrtle. I'm a certified Social Studies teacher, unable to find work, so I'm subbing in the local school district this year.

I'm a fairly voracious reader, both fiction and non. Politics and literature are my two passions, so in terms of non-fiction, my reading tends to coincide with my politics (far to the left of most people). Noam Chomsky is a hero of mine and my favorite contemporary political writer, but I also read people like Matt Taibbi, Glenn Greenwald, Naomi Klein, Howard Zinn... pretty much anyone with views that are considered radical in the context of America in twenty-first century. I'm also a huge fan of the so-called "New Atheists," particularly Hitchens, Harris, and Dawkins.

As for non-fiction, I love existentialist literature and have something of an obsession with Dostoevsky, who is definitely my favorite author of all-time. I am also fascinated by Kafka and Camus. I also love the great satirical writers of the Enlightenment, like Voltaire and Swift. Cormac McCarthy is my favorite living author and really the only one whose new releases I am genuinely excited for.

I live with my girlfriend and I have many friends. Myrtle Beach is not a very cultured city, to say the least, and it's difficult for me to find people to discuss politics or literature with. So I stumbled across this forum. I hope it's lively and enjoyable.

Good to be here; I'll see everyone in the forums!

Hi everyone!

I am 48yrs. old Medical Doctor who happens to love reading. I am from eastern Europe, I speak several languages but my english is pretty rudimental since I've learned it all by my self, when I was a teenager. And believe me, it was a difficult task in those days of my youth when russian was exclusively offered by almost every school in my country.

I am looking forward to becoming a member of this community partly because of my love for literature of any kind written by any author, but mostly because I think that you guys, know little about slavic literature.
I assume that most of you have heard about Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy. Some of you are even familiar with their novels. But lat's face it: How many of you who are not professionally involved in this field, have read anything from , Sholohov, Andric, Solzhenitsyn, Sienkiewicz, Pasternak... and btw. ALL of them are Nobel Prize Laureates in literature.

So my mission is to introduce you to the beautiful and complex slavic soul and to guide you throw the deepness of emotions and feelings which can be, at a first glance, quite confusing but in the same time so honest, warm and genuine.
I hope you will enjoy reading as much as I'll enjoy answering your questions.

Yours Natasha

Hey everyone,

This is my first post, but it's taken me a long time! I've been meaning to join for over a year. I'm a second year uni student getting my major in English Literature whilst getting a Diploma of Buisness/Retail Management through my job.

I haven't read half the books I would like to. I love learning as much as I can about literature - in all its forms. Although I have noticed I tend to prefer classic to contemporary.

I love Harry Potter so much I have actually deluded myself into thinking I'm a wizard (please don't judge me too harshly!)

Oh, and I live in Australia! One of the most beautiful places in the world. Nice to meet everyone!

Hello peoples this is my first time here so might as well say hello.

I have been interested in writing but not sure if i can...so i will introduce myself with this short story if that is ok...then maybe i might attempt to write more....lol

But if the response is negative..maybe i will go and try the X-factor where i am garaunteed a negative response...:)

HUNTED

The Rain was thick like dripping honey poured onto the trees,my heart is racing as i brush more of the thick juice onto my coat.I try desperately to see through the dark dense forest.Moving slowly only to milk the moisture off the leaves as i brush past them. I think to myself why,why am i to be chosen.
Frightened tired, beyond pure exhaustion i know i must move forward,Keep moving i just tell myself.
Stay ahead of the game, looking in all directions, watching for this evil that hunts me.Wanting to be the hunter instead of being the hunted, hoping, so hoping the sun will go down and lead into darkness, knowing if i could just hang on that little bit more.
Soaking from head to toe i press forward through the scratching scraping brush of the deepening forest, the trees and brush posing as the enemy, just as much as being my saviour.Wanting to drown in the drenching moisture that seems to slow the very progress towards freedom. MY blood pulsing through me like a freight train gone wild.
thinking of my family, thinking of this wonderful life i have lived, thinking how could i have wandered onto this path of danger.I ask myself why did i not listen to my heart, knowing i should have just kept moving instead of taking time for a drink.
I srceam from deep within..i fear now for my mere existence.Just as i hear a branch snap against my side as i brush past, the snapping making a defening echo through the dark damp forest. The very weight of the streaming water running from my coat slowing my course, just like trying to escape the monster in a nightmare everything in slow motion.
the fallen trees becoming obstacles of an unsurmountable task.I need rest ...I need to stop...i NEED to hide from my pursurers.
BANG.. i hear a shot echo throughout the forest...i panic and i run...i run as fast as my legs will carry me...the fear suppressing all feelings of pain. I run further and faster than i ever had before...plowing my way through the wall of trees and bush.
scraping and scratching my aching body as i try to esacape the sound. i feel moisture oozing down my sides as i slow down, this is deifferent from the rain.It feels warm and thick like molasses. My legs getting weaker as i seem to be able to move no further.
I crash to the ground, as i stumble over the log strewn forest floor.I see in the dimming light the color red being pasted across my stomach.the color mixing with my soaking coat, translucent as it spreads, knowing that it is spewing from deep within my aching body. My milk of life flowing from me, knowing i am not going to be of this earth for much longer.
I hear the voices of my pursuers getting closer, I hear the laughter and glee in their voices.I am wondering why they could be so horrible in that way as my very life ebbs away from me.
I hear them making sounds of victory of being conquerers of the mighty. The darkness of death chasing me as they approach. I hear them say "This will fill the freezer for a year"
I pass away into the blackness.

ok let me know if i should just quit while i am ahead....lol

Greetings all,

Pleasurable it is to encounter so many fellow avid readers of such refined taste! Although my primary interests lie within the non-fictional subjects of history, science and philosophy, I always enjoy a great classic such as War and Peace and David Copperfield which in many cases, will feature all of the above. I look forward to many enlightened discussions and many more discoveries of a writer's world.

I have a twin that is a blessing.I am single and no children. Life is great! I am in college as an older student that has been a challenge, but worth it all! I love Debbie MComber books, History and plays.

I need an explanation of a Ben Franklin quote: "The best thing to give your enemy is forgiveness; to an opponent tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to a child, a good example; to a father, deference; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; respect to yourself; to all men , charity".

Hi,

I joined this forum today and am already feeling good about it. I teach English A1 in the IB diploma programme in India. I am sure that I will be picking up tons of good ideas from all the members of the forum.

Cheers!

Hello!
I am new to this forum. I am planning a language arts lesson for 12 to 14 year kids on the topic of corporate malfeasance. Actually it's on the topic of the Bhopal Chemical disaster in 1986.

I am searching for a dramatization of that event in either an historical fiction format with characters or in the form of a play with characters. Ideally the literature would be available online.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help you send my way.

C Lindsay

hello everyone I'm troy and I'm introducing myself with this letter.
I am a freshman college student and i am glad to say i find joy in literature. Literature is a medium for me to reach a new world. I can experience the exhileration of ascending mt. Everst or get pulled into the mind of a drug addict on the cold streets of new york city. The spontaneous prose used by jack kerouac is my favorite writing style. This stream of consciousness style really made me yearn for the American dream.
