My name is Jim, I have just joined LNF primarily because my wife and I have a trip planned in August to the outer islands of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. While traveling we would like to read some good historical fiction set in these climes. I enjoy reading Wilbur Smith and Ken Follet. If you know of anything that might help us identify with the people and the times they have lived through in this Celtic and seaward part of our world. Please let me know. We love to use our Kindles, so if you know of down-loadable titles that would be great. Thanks! Jim

Hello,
I wanted to give a quick introduction so here goes. I am 36 years of age and have been writing fiction off and on for some time now. During the day I work as a systems administrator in pale, and somber IT office and at night is when I change into (insert favorite superhero here) and all the fun begins.
I'm hoping to get some critiques on some short stories that I plan on posting and improve a bit on my writing skills. I am also looking forward to building relationships with other writers here.
For now I must return to the somber hell that is my office where I shall be flogged until I turn in a TPS report to my 3 boss.

Yo, I'm not very familiar with forums, so I'm not sure if I'm doing this righ--
Oh, who cares...?
My name's Matt (aka Insomniac -- if you can't tell...). I'd like to say hi to everyone who's introduced themselves before me and also to those who've been here prior to this introduction ceremony.
Hi.
I'm from the notorious redneck state of Minnesota -- and I can prove Minnesota's notoriety of redneckness is justified.
Author's Note: This is a rant; there is no need to pay attention to most of the following paragraphs.
I just graduated high school about a month ago. Before I graduated, however, our class (of 2009 BABY!) realized something. We had not been taught grammar. Somehow, in nearly every year that our grade was supposed to have been taught grammar, we missed that important section. Fortunately, are English teacher realized this our senior year. Unfortunately, most of the grade had no idea what grammar was. That entire quarter of school was then devoted to grammar.
Most of my classmates sentences were composed thus, "Me and Billy swam to the pontoon and dived off it and kept doing it because it was fun and it was hot out and someone lost there swimsoot and cried because everyone saw his ****." This is a fictional example but many (and by many I mean most) of the seniors literally wrote similarly to this.
I'm lucky, as I loved to read books and therefore picked up most of my grammatical skills accidentally. Still, I'm unable to differentiate between interjections and conjunctions. Wait, that's a lie. . . ummm, *singing to self* Conjunction junction, what's your function? Bla bla-bla bla and bla-bla-bla... *thinking* Oh yes, conjunctions hook-up sentences...
This proves (in my opinion, anyways) that Minnesota is definitely THE redneck state. Well, there's Wisconsin and those **** packers...
Oh, my point of this rant was to lead up to me asking you guys to help with any grammatical errors you may find in my stories.
I really want to learn how to better my writing, and grammar is one of my sore spots. Transitions, interjections, pronouns. . . uh, conjunctions. . . um. . . interjections, semicolons. . .
You get the picture. . .
Author's Note: End of rant.
Anyway, I have a few previously written short stories (and short-short stories) that I'll try to post on here sometime. I'll also try to write (uh, type. . .) up some new ones.
What I'm really looking for from you guys as I write -- aside from praise and awe -- is help with grammar, punctuation (colons, semicolons, these things -> -- (dashes? Oh, uh, can I put parentheses within parentheses? (Is that how you spell that? (What's the plural for that? (you get the picture. . . (oops, I keep doing parenthesizing (and again. . . (okay, I'll stop. . . (seriously, I'll stop this time))))))) , and anything else it looks like I need help with.
Actually, I'm a terribly lazy procrastinator so there's a high chance that you guys won't ever see me again. I'm totally serious. It's hard enough to get myself to brush my teeth twice a day. I mean, really. . . twice?
In conclusion (<- haha. . .), that's all.
Thanks guys.

StuRuckus
07-02-2009, 09:37 PM
As far as introductions go, I fear mine will most likely not be the most eloquent, or the longest. I will however, make it straight forward. I have a Bachelors in literature, a degree in computer science, to be direct networking and security information. Therefore I am firmly entrenched in the world between science and conjecture; intrinsic and ethereal. Just a small warning if I ever rant too much regarding something seemingly innocuous. I have spent any time in between working and school, traveling. I have visited great libraries all over the world, and like to think that I am fairly dedicated to the literary world and understanding as much what other people feel about a piece as I myself feel, no matter how varying or diverse. True literary genius will allow for interpretation to the nth degree. Only in our discussion can we keep it alive though, for without debate, some would never recognize the works for what they truly are.
In conclusion, I hope to be a viable and respectful addition to this site. It will be good to make your acquaintances.

I've published a couple of short stories in anthologies and read a lot and play the bass and listen to music and (activity) and (hobby) and (hobby). Sorry, i like John Barth. I like comic books too.
And now I'll borrow StuRuckus' last introduction words because I wouldn't be able to say it better: "In conclusion, I hope to be a viable and respectful addition to this site. It will be good to make your acquaintances."
See ya!

I am and have always been interested in writing. However, I pursued a career in science and then dentistry. I was on the faculty of a large American Helath Sciences center of more than 20 years before leaving with an "early buy out". Now I am in full time private practice and I work with and for former students.
I have always had trouble choosing reading material until about three years ago when I embarked on reading the Modern Library's 100 most Significant English Language Novels of the Twentieth Century. So far I have read about 40.
They are not all good but they do exhibit a wide (and I mean wide) range of writing styles.

My first love was Hector. He is most underrated, at least by my older boys who actually read. I made the mistake of allowing an xbox in my home for the younger two and am ready to pull the plug.
I, myself am older 40's, who lives and breathes horticulture and sports, but find myself seriously undereducated and am considering my options for improving that condition.
I currently live in south central PA, but would consider moving if anyone has any suggestions for a nice cultural college town who welcomes adult students. Actually central PA is close to a lot of cities with art museums and public gardens and the beach if I'll get off my behind and drive, or take the train, which I do, but not often enough.
I am off to find the Dumas thread. Am I correct that he has some obscure adventure serials? I'll find out I guess.
Nice to meet you.

Hi everyone, my name is Toboe here, I am 22 and a life long book lover. I have dabbled in writing poetry, short stories etc. I hope to learn a lot from this forum , and maybe make some friends along the way. My favorite author (right now) is the Japanese Author Haruki Murakami. I love his simple realistic writing tinged with an almost Kafka-esque touch, and his anti-climatic endings are great. I have already posted a short story on this forum and I am hoping some people will read it and comment on it, maybe if you have some writing advice, or just want to tell me what you thought of it. Well, that's all I hope I have a great time here. Peace :)

VampireOutlaw
07-18-2009, 07:54 AM
Hi. (:
I'm currently 25 years old man, and...
I was a lot more of a book worm when I was a kid; read tons of true-story based books and adventure books (one of my favorites were "This Boy's Life" by Tobias Wolf, and one book about a dog named Kazan that was part wolf and through tragic events he finally found himself in the wild... I don't know what it's original neme was...) In my teenage years I read less but when I did read it was either Stephen King or J.R.R Tolkien. Later I got into the Harry Potter series, The Phantom of the Opera, and the newest found love (about a year ago) is The Vampire Chronicles. Of non-fantasy category I don't read much but sometimes...
My favorite books... Absolute number one is The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice, and not only because the fandom is my newest love and vampires have been my lifelong love, but because the book just has everything a story should, especially a vampires that of. And a book about Lestat could not get more in-depth and better than that... and that book made Lestat into my all-time number one favorite fictional character.
Anyways, other favorite books are Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie (Peter Pan has also been close to my heart all my life), The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, a fanfiction story about it (published as a book) by Susan Kay titled "Phantom", Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Of non-fantasy books my absolute favorite is The Deep End of the Ocean.
Past few latest years I've only read books that are the source material to movies I've loved. In other words I'm more of a film freak. What's absurd is that I got into The Vampire Chronicles only after seeing the film Queen of the Damned. But then again it was not the film itself that stirred my interest but what I saw so to say "between the lines". Somehow I saw the adorable, incredibly deep, strong and psychological father-son relationship of Marius and Lestat's and that's why I begun read the books. And was more than happy to learn what I had felt was exactly how it was originally, and to learn all about the reasons why = Lestat's mortal life and psychological developement all in all.
My dearest hobbies are making fan videos, forum roleplaying and writing fanfiction all in all. Drawing fan art is also lots of fun. The Vampire Chronicles are clearly the most and strongest inspiring books and I'm happy I'm talented in video editign and drawing, so I can get the visions out as long as writing fanfiction on them is prohibited- *SIGH*
I'm very, artistic and creative soul and a very, very passionate fan all in all ad especially if I can relate to something on especially personal level. In any case I always, always dig deep and give a good thought or a thousand good thoughts to what I watch/read/see. It makes me happy. And I love to share what I've figured out - in other words I host in-depth fan sites, love discussing the fandoms and I also looove debating. And psychology- now, THAT is the thing I love above all else in life. Well, maybe family comes first.
Then what do I hate?
Ungratefulnnes, when the compiter is being an ***, shallow people who don't even want to get it, and... One thing I strongly oppose is fanfiction slash hysteria - all in all but especially the false homosexual visions on The Vampire Chronicles. Yet I so have nothing against gays.
If someone interested - I reason my opinions and attitudes very in-depth, here, on one of my fan sites (http://hiddenkiss.net/lestatandmarius.php?page=ongays).
To end this post in a good note:
Other things I love are ie; children, animals (especially wolves, dogs and cats), night time, past centuries, hot dogs, summer...
Favorite...
MOVIES: Peter Pan (2003), Young Guns 1 and 2, The Breakfast Club, Queen of the Damned, Interview with the Vampire, any Lindsey Lohan movie, old Star Wars trilogy, LotR trilogy, The Phantom of the Opera (2004)...
TV: LOST, That 70's Show, Monk, Ghost Whisperer, Heroes, Little House on the Prairie, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel...
MUSIC: Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, Elton John, Evanescence, Linkin Park, Skillet, 30 Seconds To Mars, Breaking Benjamin, James Blunt, Green Day, Lifehouse, Snow Patrol... Skillet, Skillet, Skillet, Skillet, endlessly Skillet!!!

Le Dingue
07-18-2009, 10:51 PM
Greetings fellow bookheads!
My name is Dave. I've had the nickname 'Le Dingue' since I was maybe 14 and it's become a sort of internal persona, a kind of main character in the novel I laughably think of as my life!
Does that sound pretentious..? I probably deserve to be called worse things than that. Very occasionally I've been paid great compliments, though without exception these have always surprised me and sometimes left me feeling a little embarrassed.
Anyway, this is me rambling on.
Writing is, for me, a bit like trying to dictate from a radio programme... even writing this insignificant little blurb here.
Somehow thoughts, words and one's ego are all that there is of any continual substance and emotional value as the clocks tick relentlessly.
Smoking yet another cigarette...
God I'm morbid! 44 years old and I'm so pissed off with that, I already think of myself as 45 just to make it worse so that when I re-realise that I'm actually 44 it's just one tiny smidgin less bad!!
If you're young make damn sure you have the best time you possibly can, go like a racehorse for all the slices you can get, absolutely!
That's me anyway, maybe see some of you in the odd thread here and there.

this is the first time i post something on a web. a liitle bit nervous.i don't know whether this might be read and responded. i have recently read some novels in the Norton Anthology of American Literature. as a foreign language learner, i felt i couldn't understand them very well, thoug i really love those writing, say, Winter Dream by F. Scott Fitagerald, Pnin by Vladmir Nabokov, the man who studied Yoga by Norman Mailer, The life you save may be your own by Flannery O'connor, Life Story by John Barth, and many others, which happened to make me feel the people's life in those stories are quite the same as what i witness today in China.Anyhow, i log in in order to get some help from the English native speaker, esp. experts on literature.

Since a lot of reading influences a lot of writing, I guess I'll say that I have a (more recently selective) list of favorite books/authors that include Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club, Choke, etc), JRR Tolkien (the linguistics genius), Anne Rice (some reservations on this but I love her style sometimes), and whatever happens along the way.
By the way, 'indil' means flower in Quenya (elvish by JRR Tolkien), fyi. Not my name

Hey everyone I'm new here so I guess I have to make some sort of introduction - Here it goes I'm 17 running on the fuel of enthusiasm, working hard for a freedom of a kind that would probably never come. I am in a really funky mood right now so if you want to know more you'd have to ask later. : )

Hello literature lovers,
to answer the forum's request I come here with a brief introduction :)
I was born in the Netherlands, but have been roaming the earth for quite some years now. At this moment I am 25 years of age, and back in the capital of my mothercountry. This winter I will be attending the New York Film Academy in New York City, an adventure I am well looking forward too!
My lit-hero is Anaïs Nin, I love her for so many reasons, her words being the most prominent one.
Some of my favorite books are...
Traumnovelle by Arthur Schnitzler
Innocents by Gilbert Adair
In Defense of Sin by John Portmann
Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
Wilderness and The American Night by Jim Morrison ♥
The Most Beautiful Woman in Town by Charles Bukowski
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
The Scent of Your Breath by Melissa P.
On The Road by Jack Kerouac
American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis
I also really love John Wilmot's Poetry and written letters!
I hope to also roam this web forum when I have time, and getting to know interesting other literature lovers!
PS.
I cannot believe I didn't write down Anaïs' works in my favorites list!
Safe to say, I love everything she ever wrote ;)
I just learned of your site today and have not yet had a chance to look around. I imagine that you will learn more about me from any comments I post than anything I may think I know about myself.
...hmm...what I read (I'll jump between Titles and Authors here) anything by Amy Tan, David Baldacci, Vince Flynn, John Mortimer's Rumpole Series, almost anything by Alexander McCall Smith (Ladies No.1 Detective Agency, 54 Scotland Street, Sunday Philosophy Club) series', Charles Dickenson, Les Miserable, Cold Mountain, Snow Falling on Cedars, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Secret Lives of Bees, Poe, Dan Brown, and so many more.
I look forward to learning more about the site and the members.
~L
Mdmsll BB,
I am so glad to see Lolita listed in your favorites list. This is a funny book, so absurd, how anyone can think it is porn, obviously hasn't read it fully.

Hi L, fellow newling ;)
I agree with you, it's taking one part and stretching it, while overlooking the essential ingredients. My theory is that people see in things, the things they wish to see, so when people call Lolita pornography, well, that says a lot about them ;)
Hello mdmsll BB,
Well said!

Hello. My Preferred name is Remii though its nothing like my real name. I always thought you should have two names. the one that your parents give you, which reflects there personality, and the name that you bestow upon yourself, which ultimatly reflects yourself, your soul all compressed into this one name.
I always like to introduce myself with a statement that i hope will effect readers in some way even if it is minute.
i have just finnished yr nine, and I have been thinking more and more about my future. I decided to keep my options open and explore everything. i have started with my favourites including writing. i would welcome ANY advice that anyone has to offer!
I hope you enjoy things that i post.

Hello all. Young and younger.:)
I am a newcomer to this precious site. I am glad to be here. I was reading books since my childhood, even though most of them were fairytales and the stories about adventurers and so on. So when I saw that site for the first time I was overpowered by all these comments, which are good-minded and good-natured mostly.
I hope in the good companionship here.
I should say that my English is not very good.
But I am still working to improve it.
Sometime you can find some bad grammar.:yawnb: :)

Hello! I am probably among the younger members of this site. I am a junior in high school, and I love to write. I have been doing a lot of thinking about what I want to do after college, and writing is a possibility, so I thought I'd find a way to get feedback. Let's face it, asking mom if your story is any good has a slightly biased return.
I also love discussing books, so I will definitely go check out that section of the forum as well.
I look forward to learning more about you all!

Hi everyone!
I am very happy to have come across this website - literature plays an important role in my life primarily because it has allowed me to reflect, keep things in perspective and make sense of various moments and processes experienced during my time in the army but also now at the office. I look forward to get in touch with people that share an interest in US,German and Russian literature.

Hi everyone!
(Oh no, I used the last poster's greeting!)
I am a twenty-year old university student looking for a place to discuss books outside the classroom. This is especially true for the summer, when I have very few people to "talk literature" with. When I found this site I knew I had struck gold -- taken aback by all the enthusiasm, it dawned on me that this is perhaps the number one spot for book-lovers on the web. Sixty thousand members... this place is more populous than my hometown!
I look forward to some engaging discussions (especially over some nice food... as I write this my eyes dart between the screen and my Turkey Pastrami. Apple Cider, anyone?)

To understand who I am read something I have written:
Compare and Contrast Parental vs. Public Entity Responsibilities
Parents who have been laid off are not relieved of their responsibilities. They still have to feed, clothe, and house their families. Those parents cannot say to their children you are now going to have to pay for the privileges that you previously enjoyed at our expense. Public entities should be no different. The concept that public entities should be able to further burden those parents who have been laid off and are desperately trying to make ends meet due to the current economic problems of this nation is insane. This statement applies to public utilities, and to our governmental elements at all levels, city, county, and federal.
That SRP's application for a rate increase application be approved at this time is pure insanity. SRP should be advised to do as all of us who are in the same situation of trying to make ends meet. “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.” Do not lay people off and make the situation worse either. Instead, tell SRP and the government entities to "live within your means." One example would be to cut the wages of all those in the entity still making more than the poverty level by a percentage large enough to eliminate that portion of whatever the entity's shortfall is that the management of the entity report cannot be eliminated by other means. This last one must apply to management in particular, perhaps at an even greater percentage that it does to those at the lower levels. Would not this give management incentive to solve the problems or else suffer a pay cut?
The concept of instituting new fees for services not previously charged for, or increasing the fees or charges for services, at this time is equally insane. Just because some poor sucker's head is under the guillotine is not sufficient reason to drop the blade because you have the power to do so. The more money that is required of those who are in danger of having their houses foreclosed, the more foreclosures will occur. The more foreclosures occur, the more the prices of property will drop. Does not anyone get it? Anytime you increase prices or allow prices to increase, in an economic depression the worse, you make the depression.
While we are at it, tell those senators and congress members to eliminate those special medical benefits that they deny all others. Tell them to give back all raises that they gave themselves in the period of this economic crisis. Why is it that it is acceptable to grant all senators and members of congress unlimited health care at the expense of the state but it is socialism to grant any health care to all the citizens of the state? I am not so much in favor of universal healthcare as I am against the concepts described in the book "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, where "all are equal but some are more equal than others." This is especially true when those who can most afford health care receive it free at the expense of those who cannot afford healthcare.

Hello, everyone. I'm Laura. I have responded to a post and am now introducting myself. I guess I'm one of the older crowd here, too. Unlike Virgil, however, with my age comes little wisdom. I do enjoy reading and have read quite a bit. But I am not a scholar. Currently getting back to one of my favorite authors, Erich Fromm. He was an amazing philosopher. I don't really enjoy talking about myself. I am an observer more than a participant. But I don't want to be completely unsociable either. Now, on to more posts.

Greetings, my name is Cletus and I am an aspiring writer who tends to view the world through a darker glass than most. While not wealthy, I do live in a gated community in California. My hobbies are reading, writing, and outdoor weightlifting. I look forward to sharing views with other literature lovers. I just revisited Pygmalion and it occurred to me that one underlying theme of this outwardly cheery tale actually is the exploits of an aging pedophile. Does anyone else see that?

This seems the perfect forum. I may even start a blog and muse a bit on the feelings that have been evoked during this enduring, tropical summer. Hello to the wide-world of the Literature Network , My name is Megan and I just wanted to properly introduce myself! So here goes it.
I joined the Literature Network for two reasons. The first and foremost being that I love Literature of course and I enjoy meeting and discussing Literature with others who share this delightful addiction. The second reason I joined is I am writing a novel and I hope in time I could get feedback from others who have an eye and an ear for good storytelling.
A couple years back I graduated at ASU with a major in Political Science and a Minor in Social Justice and I was supposed to head back to get my MA, but I opted out instead so I could spend time writing--not the best of career choices but certainly the most fulfilling! Who had time for fettered dissertations when there is creativity bursting at the hands?!
Traveling back a little more, to when I was but a wee minnow, is around the time I learned the enslaving power of words-- ideas that sizzle in the thought space like a slow-cooked meal and escapism to other times and places through wakeful dreams. These are the phenomena that I first discovered after reading the Little House on the Prairie Series in 1st Grade. My first "Chapter Books." It was all uphill from there. I read everything I could get my hands on: The Secret Garden, Robin Hood, Little Women, and the on and on into books for "bigger people."
This lasted until I was about 18. And then, it happened-- the great “switch.” I had begun another love affair, one very different in execution but just as rewarding in outcome. I found the “other” world. The world of Non-fiction! In a flash of an eye I was submerged in Noam Chomsky, Emma Goldman, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Peter Kropotkin, Jean Jacques Rousseau, John Pilger, Frederick Douglas, Mark Twain, Naomi Klein, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Joseph Campbell, Karen Armstrong, Bertrand Russell, Ward Churchill, Burnett Bolloten, and many others.
For awhile I stopped reading fiction completely. Had I lost my long time passion now that there were ‘real’ ideas enlightening me? That there where places and times that had existed without embellishment?! Who needed the world of make-believe?
Well, I did. After a many years of politicks, philosophy, sociology, history, current affairs and the like, I knew there was something missing in my well read world. I enrolled in a Post-Colonial Sci-Fi Literate Course my senior year of college and KaZamm, in a flash of an eye I was back.
So that is a little slice of the Megan pie, I don’t want to dish out the entire meal and overstay my welcome!
So GREETINGS fellow readers!! Befriend me!!

hey there,
...uhmm....not sure what I'm doin' here...anyway, I'll give it a try..!!
I'm Greek, 17 years old.I'm still a high-school student, final round!!In one year from now i'll be going at the university,i wanna be a teacher.I'm often dreaming of becoming a writer or a poet, too,but i know that 'd be pretty difficult...!!
I love reading books in their writer's own language, dislike translations!they make me think they kind of ''annihilate'' the writer's own thought and inspiration...that's the reason i'd like to study and learn many many languages...i can only speak english, german and greek, while i can understand ancient greek and latin,so far...but I love prototypes!!!
i love collecting second-hand, old books;i feel they've got a history, but family and friends feel i'm mad...yeap..!sometimes,having no books to read,i like just staying still and taking my surroundings in.it's not much, but it's relaxing and inspiring...i strongly dislike tv and computers...the latter i need though...!I also like cooking, and i love flowers and gardening...shame i don't have time!!
i started reading english literature recently...wuthering heights simply amazed me; W.Shakespeare 's a genius.my approval isn't something he's interested in,though,i think!!
well, that's all the "interesting" KryStaLitsa
P.S.:forgive my english, there's lack of exercise

hey muhsin, thanks!!!i think i got your point, i'm not sure though...is it about minimalism in writing? about writing wisely but not plenty? if so,you may be right, but i used to think literature allows its funs to go for the "marriage" of both quality and variety!!!the "wisely but not plenty"-thing is probably in better match with journalism, not literature,i think...please correct me if i'm mistaken!!:yawnb: thanks again a lot:wave:

Hello people! :)
Let me see... I'm a college freshman with an elementary education major, a dedicated reader, and an aspiring author. I love to talk about books, and crave the thrill of finishing my own books. Right now I'm praying that I edit my latest manuscript well so I can start sending out those submissions. It's always been my dream to be a published writer. For now though, I'm content to write for pleasure and collect good books to read.
It's so hard to pick a favorite book, especially since I only became addicted to reading a few years ago. Of the books I've read so far, I greatly enjoyed Dracula (Bram Stoker), Watership Down (Richard Adams), Sharpe's Rifles (Bernard Cornwell), and Out of the Silent Planet (C.S. Lewis). As far as nonfiction goes, my most profitable read by far has been the life-changing work The Imitation of Christ by the monk Thomas a'Kempis.

Hey, everyone!
After reading threads on DH Lawrence and Emily Bronte, I decided I'd sign up to online-literature. And now here's my first post: a quick introduction!
I'm still at school, studying Maths, Physics and Latin and plan to go to uni next year to study Maths, so I haven't experienced quite as much of life as some of you or read so many books either!
There are so many authors that I love: I couldn't begin to list them! At the minute I'm reading Women in Love by DH Lawrence. I read The Rainbow earlier this year and loved it so much. DH Lawrence has such an ability to express deep thoughts and ways of thinking!
But I'll save my opinions for the relevant forums. :)

Hello All!
At the beginning of this year, I lost my job and like so many others, I have ended up ina situation where one is left with few choices (as regards to work).
Therefore, I applied to college for entry to the Access to Higher Education for mature students, from which I will hopefully gain the diploma which will give me matriculation to gain entry to University.
I decided to study English, or at least an english related degree.
So, that is the reason for my joining this forum!
Hope to have fun here!

hello all, i just joined tonight. i have been looking for something like this for very long now, and im thinking i found it!
so, anyways, i am a high school student in Corvallis. who loves to write and draw,paint,cook,bike...all that. i love to be with my friends and explore the city(all i can do for now) after school Stella, my best friend, and i plan to hop a train and travel the world. i want to write about some of the crazy things we will see and do! she want to be an artist, and plans to draw and paint plenty of things. after traveling for a few years or so, we want to come back to Oregon and live in Portland, where i will then go to writing collage..(maybe if i can do better in school right now..)
we always talk about this plan and how awesome it will be, we both don't like to be home, for lack of getting along with our family's. so we go and camp out in strange places for the night. very fun to do! :)

I love that I've stumbled onto this place :) I weasled my way through high school w/o reading anything (save for Catcher in the Rye, as the vulgarity drew me in), spent of all my 'book money' in college on booze and stumbled into wine a few years back. Wine has kickstarted my joy for writing, and that joy has finally come full circle to...you know, reading :) I belly-flopped through all of Hemingway's novels last month, and am snorkeling through Vonnegut & Joyce as I type. I'm so appreciative of this board and hope to pull my weight by contributing as much as I can.

Hi My name is Marie. I came across this site while searching for others interpretation "the idiot" by Dostoevsky. I decided to actually join the site because I'm an avid reader and I always try to find how other readers feel about the same books I read.
My all time favorite book is war and peace. The way Tolstoy writes just captures me completely. A few of my other favorite books are:
Anna karenin, the brothers Karamazov, shes come undone, I hope they serve beer in hell, enders game, the world according to garp, the harry potter series, I know this much is true, one flew over the cukoos nest, a clockwork orange and watership down (i named my dog hazel after the main character.)
Right now im reading Saturday by the same author as atonement.
Recently I printed out a list titled 1001 books you must read before you die, and im just reading them one at a time.
I'm 23 and My major is biochemistry with a minor in philosophy.

09-03-2009, 07:53 AM
Greetings,
I am a music writer/researcher deeply involved in a highly controversial book on the life, career and musical reputation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). I am specially interested in the literary relationship between the dominant role of the Jesuit Order prior to 1773 and the rise of the epoch known as the 'Englightenment'. Since, it seems to me from many sources that to some extent the Jesuit Order, despite dominating schools, colleges, publishing, and censorship in the Holy Roman Empire (virtually up until 1773) were definitely pioneers of that later cultural era known as the 'Enlightenment' and that they, after 1773, pursued a secular strategy with Voltaire, Rousseau, Mozart and others up until their restoration in 1814.
The relationships are far too strong to ignore this strong possibility - that, to some extent at least, the rise of the 'Englightenment' was a strategy forumulated by the same Jesuit Order, using, of course, men such Rousseau and Voltaire, Mozart and others.
The links between Englightenment figures such as Baron Grimm (to name only one of dozens) are too great to dismiss this. Grimm being (as you may know) the Paris patron of Mozart during his visit there in 1778.
In short, I am very interested in Mozart and the background to the 'Enlightenment'.
The name of my forthcoming book may speak for itself -
'The Manufacture of Mozart'.
Regards
yanni

Hi there and wellcome
I went briefly thru your posts on Mozart and was pleased with your "consistency" statement on my "Rousseau". I'll try to formulate an answer to your own topic which finds me in agreement, specially the "all manufactured" part.

Hello all,
I have journals of ideas, and my mind is always racing, but have not put everything into full motion...yet. I have some poems that I have completed and a short story. There are at least two novel ideas that I have been serious about for a couple of years now, and I think it is about time. I welcome the chance to view other ideas and I value outside critiques.

I've been lurking a while but decided to join. I have always loved reading but recently have been listening to several classics on audio and really wanted to talk with someone about what I've been "reading". It seems that readers are getting rarer and rarer in our society. When I ask people I know about reading, all I get are blank looks. I've been very active on a hobby type forum and thought I'd look for something similar for literature. This seemed to be the best I found; more active than many. I have an art related undergrad and a masters in accounting (as Monte Python would say "and now for something Completely different"). My reading tastes tend to be classics and sci fi/fantasy. I don't care for romance and I'm ambivalent on mysteries. I do love talking about books and live with a family of reading fanatics - except for the dogs. I live in North Texas (thus my name). Please forgive me as I learn my way around this site, hoping not to step on any toes - or eat any for that matter.

Hello to all of you.
I've accidentally found this forum while browsing the net, looking for information about books. I've peeked at some topics here, and I found them interesting, and I so awfully wanted to reply... I resisted the urge, though. Of course, I will reply in the near future. Or I think so. (:
So - a little about myself. I'm seventeen. My name is Gabriele and I'm from Lithuania. Wonder if anybody knows where it is... (: I live in a smaaall town, so there aren't any cinemas, theatres, clubs or anything. That's one of the reasons why I read so much, I guess.
I started reading even before I learnt to read. I made my grandmother read me something every evening, mostly fairy tales, but my favourite one was a coursebook "Readings for 2nd grade". I admit, I was a strange child. (:
When I started to go to school, I found out that there was a whole library of interesting books, that they had Hugo, and Andersen, and Gaarder, and Lindgren, and Stoun, and Twain, and and and... And then the library became like some kind of a magic place for me.
When I was older, as I recall in 7th grade, I started to write. At first it was only a paragraph or two, but eventually it became bigger and bigger. I write short stories now and I'm quite good at it. It's the way I get all the thoughts from my head and can live like a normal person, not always lost somewhere above the clouds. (:
All in all, I'm very very glad I found this forum, I hope I'll fit in and it will be a lot of fun.
P.S. Sorry for my English, it's not my native language. There might be a lot of mistakes...
P.P.S. It's long. :/

I have a bachelors in English Education and since Masters is not in the cards at the moment, I figured this is the next best thing for now. My favorite books are The Minister's Wooing by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens, The Bloody Chasm by John W. De Forest, The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis and the list goes on and on. William Blake, Milton, and Dante top my favorite poets, I can't even narrow down to a favorite essayist, and I wish Jane Austen had written more since I have already devoured everything she wrote.
With affection to my dear literati!

Uhm. HI EVERYONE!
Well, I'm here because I'm an Eng Lit student and wanted to talk to some like minded people without the constraints of the class room. As well as studying Literature I have also taken Language and Sociology in hopes of doing some concoction of the three and journalism at university in a year.
I come from sunny ole England town, where it's grim up t'North :)
Okay, that's the last time I'll type out my accent, promise!
I enjoy a wide range of books and only wish I could read more. I'm currently reading Oliver Twist and looking forward to starting either Notes on a Scandal or One For My Baby when I'm done. I'm also studying Dracula, Dr Faustus, Macbeth, A Handful of Dust AND Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf this year. So no doubt I'll be back with many a question.
Earlier this year I managed to get my dream student job in Waterstones. However they wanted me to work Saturday and Sunday and I'd never have a day off or get to see my boyfriend/friends/family/myself properly so I quit...then promptly lost my other job. So that was a bit of a knock back.
When I'm not stressing over work and school I enjoy all the typical teenager things. Shopping, cinema, being blind drunk, anything of that nature. As well as occasionally picking up my knitting needles and maybe even getting a nice afternoon on my bike.
Anyway. That was rather boring. But Hi everyone, no doubt I'll get to post plenty of questions and maybe even some answers while I'm here :)

Welcome to te Lit Net forum. I'm sure you will find your visits interesting and informative. Hello folks,
Greece here. It gets rather gloomy in Athens in September, even if the whole nation refuses to accept that summer is finally over and insists on walking around looking at the sky and smiling. You seen that movie, Shawn of the Dead? Remember the opening scene where Londoners walk around looking like zombies, even if they haven't become ones yet? That's Athens. Only, in Edgar Wright's cult creation Londoners don't smile. We smile. Constantly. Irritating, stupid bunch of idiotically smiling zombies.
Maybe it's the olive oil.
I enjoy grumbling.
I also enjoy football, cooking, and surfing the net for porn. I often go to a bar called "Jazz in Jazz" whose owner and bartender is in love with an Argentinian dancer and wants to move to ****in Buenos Ayres. I like good whiskeys, but unfortunately I can only afford mediocre ones.
I'm thankful for the last six months, in which I've been with someone who might very well turn out to be the love of my life. It's a woman. Sorry, if I hadn't specified that my whole post would make me look incredibly gay. Which I'm not. Not that I've got something against gays, it's just that I'm not. If I were I would make sure I have the best time possible, but I'm just not. Alright?
Although my friend Dimitri is indeed gay. Married, but gay. I don't see much of him unfortunately, but I do see quite a bit of three guys I've been close friends with since primary school. My friends are a very important part of my life. We all sit there and drink scotch and smoke and wonder whether Dimitri's wife knows what a faggot her husband is.
I think that's it. I've covered everything about myself and run out of conversation.
This is a great forum to discover, and I'm very glad I'm here. I'm looking forward to contributing.
Best regards,

Well, you know where I live, now. I was born here and have no plans to live anywhere else, although I have traveled a bit. I, like Virgil, am probably older than anyone here...I'll be 50 next summer, and finally at a place in my life where I can pursue a life dream: Teaching Literature and Language Arts! Which is really not so much about me being the teacher as it is a way that I can continue to learn.
I had a tough time thinking of a favorite book. Last year, I presented a paper on the role of the artist in Kerouac and Nietzsche. Yikes! I really enjoyed reading Dharma Bums and plan to read On the Road if I survive this semester of MAT. Right now I have a stack of textbooks jealously staring me down, so I had better sign off. This looks like a great forum!
Thanks....

Hi,
My name's Claire, and I stumbled across this site whilst surfing the net for information on T.S Eliot for a school project .
I like a wide variety of books, things ranging from Alexandre Dumas through to Bret Easton-Ellis and Alex Flinn. I have yet to find a book which will not satisfy me on at least one point (even, God forbid, Twilight -or are we not allowed to talk about that without breaching the rule which states no quibbling over current politics:D-), and hope never to do so.
My favourite authors are deffinately Cecilia Dart-Thornton (The Bitterbynde Series), Louis De Bernieres (Captain Corelli's Mandolin), Fyodor Dostoyevsky (Crime and Punishment etc.), Charles Dickens and T.H White (The Once and Future King), and I highly recommend these to all!!
Some things I really enjoy are reading (big shock), watching Christian bale movies, rock-climbing, tree climbing, horse riding, skiing, writing stories (which I hope may one day be completed and published), clothes shopping .... spending money is a big favourite of mine ...... especially on bale films.......
Anyways; I listen to Short Stack, Tom Felton, Taylor Swift, Huey Lewis and The News (sad, i know), All my favourite musicals (Little Women, Billy Eliot, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, The Little Mermaid.... the list goes on).
I love singing; and my friends and i think I have a brilliant voice, but i've never had an unbiased opinion, we feel the same way about my acting and writing skills ... i get the feeling that a big wake-up-call is waiting for me somewhere down the track, but I will continue to live, totally oblivious of the large possibility that is my inability to sing, act, and write.
That's it for my first post on this site .... hope to meet some other people with the same interests and likes as me!!

Hi, to all!
I am a resident of North Carolina. I enjoy having the mountains and the coast within close proximity of each other, and it seems that this has greatly inspired my writing muses, as well as outlook.
I am in my final year of being a student at a local Early College High School (for those of you who do not know of what I speak, I attend high school and college classes at the same time on my local community college campus, and I will graduate this year with an AA in College Transfer without paying a dime.). When I graduate, I intend to pursue a BA of English, and perhaps go on to complete an MA in English or Counseling, this I have yet to decide.
Literature is a natural high for me, and I enjoy it nearly as much as I enjoy stepping outside in the mornings to take a breath of cool, fresh air and watch the sun rise. It is a wonderful opportunity to be among like-minded individuals on this forum, and I look forward to getting to know you all.

Hi, my name is Gigi and I am from Ohio. I enjoy reading the classics, especially the Brits. I am a huge Jane Austen fan and that is originally what drew me to this site.
I would have to say that my favorite book is Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. I can read it again and again and each time I find something I had previously overlooked.
I write in my spare time and have recently decided to make it a priority. I am taking a few online courses to try and disipline myself. I've the inspiration but not the perspiration.
I have been looking around and I am not exactly sure how this site works, I suppose I should read a few of the guideline posts, huh? Anyway, I really hope to find some like minds on this site and become motivated to get through the stack of books I have always wanted to read.
And that dancing banana is just silly...

Let's see what is important. I am 24, from Texas, and love reading. I write short stories, usually in the horror vein. My reading range is vast and inclusive of almost all genres. I found this place while looking for a place to have intelligent, informative discussion of a literary nature. It seems I have found it.
Virgil, I have to say I love your signature. Byron is an absolute favorite of mine. I think Lady Caroline Lamb's description of him is very accurate.
See you all around the forums.

Hi all!
I'm from Nr. Nottingham in the UK and I found this forum whilst searching for a literary quote. My favourite genres are classics and crime fiction. I am a really big crime fiction reader and love being introduced to new authors. I also enjoy reading children's literature and have recently got interested in illustrators. I'd like to say that I'm an avid writer, but unfortunately I don't seem to have the 'gift.' I would love to learn and improve, though! I enjoy watching adaptations of novels onto the big screen and discussing how will it worked/didn't work. It invariably seems to be the latter! I would love to get out to the threatre more to see some of my favourite plays performed.
Hope to see you all around the forum!

..I had initially become interested when I had chanced upon this neighborhood of blogging comrades and chanced upon a discussion forum about Abbadon. Even though many of the theories were imaginative and interesting, the truth about Abbadon is that, in Revalation, the Angel that is Abbadon is a title, not a name, and that title describes Jesus' power given to him at the appointed time that he received the "keys to life and death itself" in which he now posseses the power to oust Satan from heaven and Satan is now limited to the confines of earth, "possesing great anger, knowing he hath but a short period of time". Jesus also has possesion of the power to eventually destroy both Satan and his demons in Armageddon. Abbadon is not a fallen angel, nor a rogue, but is Jesus come to power and possesing great authority given him by his Father, God (Jehovah... Psalms 83:18) Revalation speaks of this angel casting Satan and his demons out of heaven... so how can he be in cahoots with him? Also, all "rogue" angels in defiance of God are called Demons. The title Abaddon is a description of one of the many offices and abilities the Lord acquired when he took his throne. Also, in Ezekiel, you will find that Satan was once a holy, high-ranking covering cherub, who became Satan in the Garden of Eden because he desired the worship of man.
Hello, I am beno. A newbie in many senses. I am an undergrad student in Puerto Rico currently finishing a B.A. in Second Language Acquisition and another in Literature. Much like Virgil (granted not as radical as the engineer/literature combo) I was torn between the practicality of an Education degree as opposed to the joy of a literature degree so i went for both. Ultimately the amalgamation of both degrees should prove helpful in the classroom. I hope. About my background, I was born with a book in one hand and a pencil in the other. Sadly, this left me with my hands full and i had to pass on other things, namely a grasp on reality. Responsibility. I am the type of person that will disappear with a book, a pen and a pad, not to be seen for a few days. Aloof. I love to debate, playing the devil's advocate so often that Im now on retainer. I enjoy people who truly believe in what they say and defend it.Tactfully. Always up for a discussion. Im proud to say that the t.v. that I bought last September (2008) has yet to see a minute of scheduled programming. I nearly had a heart attack last night when i saw a trailer for Where the Wild Things Are. I try to stay away from television, but randomly; at friend's houses i'll catch a peek. Its never good... I do however watch movies and play video games. People have often mocked me for my hypocrisy (no to tv but yes to games and movies) Movies have somehow retained a resemblance to an artform, and every so often a movie comes along that moves me. As far as video games go, I am a huge fan. Video Games are our last chance to get kids back into literature. (i know im going to catch a lot of flack for this comment but im more than willing to explain myself. Just ask... be nice:nod:) Dont get me wrong... take your kid outside ad give him some books THAT YOU HAVE READ and discuss them with him/her all while maintaining an active lifestyle. Eventually, when you come back home, and he/she is done reading, and tired and bored and hungry and antsy and hovering, dont give him/her the tv remote... give them an RPG (thats a role playing video game, not a missile launcher)
wow... its amazing how eratic and verbose I can be...
in any case I look forward to foruming (lol) with you in a more structured manner, perhaps then Ill make a little more sense. No promises though.

Hello everyone! I'm Michelle and I'm very pleased to have stumbled upon a forum of my interests that appears to be worth it's weight in Zeros and Ones! Let's see... anything about myself worth sharing... I'm 17 years old and have been writing on and off for years. Over time it's become my greatest and most fulfilling passion and I do it nearly all the time. I mainly dabble in novels and short stories, often writing fanfictions of some kind when the dreaded Writer's Block is plaguing me. But I digress, I look forward to my time here on this forum and eagerly anticipate speaking with other literary fans about topics that seem rarely discussed in this day and age. It will be nice getting to speak with a lot of you!

Greetings everybody, I am so happy to be here! My name doesn't matter, I say, because it's pretty ugly, but I am generally called "Cabbage" (>.< ugly surname)
I came here from disappointment from other sites, in desire to find a place where I could find a chance to become a better artist and writer, without changing my profiles all day long!
Personally, I hope you guys won't find me weird or boring, everybody is different on this world.
Anyway, I forgot to tell you more about me.
I come from Constanta, in the south east of Romania, but I do not really like the sunlight (I'M A VAMPIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......................... no way, kidding) and I am 13, studying in 7th grade (here school starts from 6 or 7 years old), and living with my parents. Graduated in boredom; that's what my classmates say about me, but I don't care and act I'm stupid. I am happy-go-lucky but a little introverted, and I WISH I were more independent! Poor wishes! I am bookworm, and love school. My favourite school subjects are maths, physics, English, French, Romanian, biology........ anything but sport :eek2: who the hell invented that?!
I love art and music too, composer: Chopin, band: anything metal/ goth and singer: well, a lot, Mariah Carey, Madonna, and as painters.. marmee! they're so many!!!!!!! You've got to reply though to know my preferences in art and literature!
Thank you for the attention and cheers to you all!

Hey I'm Sam, from UK.
22 years old, and always loved books, but until now was far too lazy to actually take the time out to read extensively.
Les Miserables was the first book I chose to read 'seriously' and actually pay attention to, rather than just reading to send me to sleep on a night :)
It's now my favourite book.
Other than that I love The Brothers Karamazov, anything by Thomas Hardy and Jane Austen. 1984's a favourite as well.
Really into the classics at the moment, but would appreciate some tips for more modern literature that follows my taste for dire and thoughtful prose :)
Mainly like books that focus on society, and how it affects personal relationships and peoples lives.
Now I sound like a bore, so I'll try and redeem myself by saying that i pass my spare time with photography, music, friends and cosy drinking establishments, preferably all at the same time :)

Hi, I'm a fiction writer and podcaster living in Brooklyn, NY with my pet goldfish, Fred. I've been doing some audiobook-style podcasts of public domain literature on my website, and I've been really enjoying re-reading some of these works, many of which I hadn't read since college.
I look forward to participating in some lively discussion here on the forums!

Hello everybody. I’m a British photojournalist and translator. I translate poetry from Spanish into English and vice versa. From French and Italian into English and Spanish. I never use pseudonyms. By now you must have guessed that I have two mother tongues (American Indians would call me a forked tongue).
I have translated a great Salvadoran poet, Roque Dalton, into English (one hundred poems) but due to family squabbling over copyright (he was murdered in 1975, the same year another great poet was murdered: P. P. Pasolini) I am not able to publish the book.
I have also translated other Latin American poets into English but I don’t know if it is possible to publish a book. I look for the way things will turn out spiralling from a chaotic world. I hope this forum will help the interchange of literature from different countries and cultures. I believe that is the purpose of translation.

I just joined to day in my computer class! I'm supposed to be taking notes on new technologies, but this is more interesting. And worthwhile. Anyways, hoping to establish myself as a young dark-fantasy writer, I've already finished my first short story last night.
"Come away, O child"... I remember that poem. It was rather sad.

Hello, I'm a teenager and an aspiring (hopefully!) author. I'm very very artistic and distracted easily by pretty colors and interesting sounds. I absolutely can't wait to share my stories with other people all over the world!
I've started two or three novels but stopped writing all of them at around chapter Five. I am in the middle of writing a story called Flick that's based loosly on my experiences with self-infliction.
Aside from writing, I love to draw, take pictures, listen to music, sing, and pretty much do anything creative. I recently stumbled into the rather confusing world of adult literature and am loving it. I'm participating in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in order to try and actually finish what I start.
I can't wait to read some stories posted by the users here!

HI There
I am new to this forum.... stumbbled on it this afternoon while looking for information on poetry and how to read and understand it.
I am curretnly studying a BA in Communication Science part time as I work during the day full time as an office manager for an Investment company.
I love poetery but i am so clueless when it come ti understanding it and therfore i feel I am missing out on a very special side of literature. One of my subjects in English literature and one aspect of it is reading and deciphering poetry.
Some of my hobboes include reading, scrapbooking sketching etc but these days i find I have not time to allocate to hobbies with work and studying.

Hello!
This is the obligatory introduction post. I am...
a writer, I believe, although unpublished, and I don't anymore write every single day, which I believe to be necessary. I've attended graduate school for classical languages (Latin and Greek). I taught Latin for a year to college students and another year to middle schoolers (11-14 year olds), which was awful.
Now I'm taking courses in English and a fiction workshop, dabbling in freelance copywriting for money, and eating lots of rice.
Authors? Oh, I'm a big fan of Russians. I enjoy the grotesque and black humour in literature as well as "magical realism." Authors I've read or are reading recently whom I loved include Tolstoi (fave), Borges, Gogol, Dostoevski.

Now I am writing a story called "Web" – I hope that it'll come out to be a good one. Came here because I was assigned to make a translation of a poem, which I don't know how to analyze first, I am really good at writing but analyzing is not my thing. Hello everyone. I'm challenged on what to say without saying too much and becoming a bore or a braggart.
I was born in Berlin during the Airlift in 1948. I am the son of a German war refugee and a French Army Captian. My mother brought me to the USA after marrying a US Army soldier. Our first day in the USA was the Fourth of July. I still have the plane ticket. Being an Army brat took me all over the USA and Europe and most especially Alaska where I found the poetry of Robert Service. More recently I have lived in So. California, where my children still live. I am now in Oregon. My life has taken me to many interesting places and people. I enjoy writing poetry but I do not tease myself that it is any good, but I still write it.

Hi! I registered last year but have always been 'spying' on people's posts and have never really posted anything myself. So I'm new here, I guess. Hello all, glad to be a member of a forum again - it's been years since I was a regular poster.
I've always been in love with reading (see my username/4th grade nickname). Growing up in a tiny town in the rural Midwest, books have always been a key factor in my entertainment and imagination. I am on a mission of sorts to read novels acknowledged to be great works of literature, while still enjoying my Nora Roberts collection. I hope to find suggestions on this forum, as my list of great novels from the Modern Library suspiciously contains many books published by the Modern Library and doesn't contain any books written after 1970.
Later.

I enjoyed reading this thread and thought I'd add my bit. Greetings to all; I have been looking for a community like this for a while and was glad to stumble across this site. I'm looking forward to learning from everyone.
As for myself: I have been an avid but highly unorganized reader, home schooled through high school. After a brief foray into university-level piano performance studies, I stepped out of academia for some years, earning a certification in teaching ESL/EFL and working in various music-related positions. Now in my mid-twenties I am beginning to earn a bachelor's degree in English language and literature.
Outside of words I work as a barista and a professional harpist. I am marrying a man soon who is truly above all others. To him I say in Anne Bradstreet's words,
"If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were loved by wife, then thee.
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me, ye women, if you can."
I don't know how much I will be able to post on these boards but I feel privileged to join. Thanks all!

Hello everyone!
I guess I'll take a few minutes to introduce myself. I'm a 22 year old married female, and I just moved to Maryland. I found this site after searching around for a decent forum where people discuss literature on all levels, from serious to just giving opinions. I read a few topics and really thought I could add a little to the place. It seems to be a more verbal group, as suppose to Goodreads or Amazon where most conversations are review-based.
I started reading heavily a few years ago when me and my husband packed up with his immediate family and moved to Georgia. I'm originally from Baltimore, and being so close to the city I read a little but there are so many distractions I never thought seriously about books. But once I moved from the city to the country, I found myself with minimal entertainment, a lot of free time, and not enough things to fill my day. Then I discovered literature.
It's been three years since then and I've read a little from every time period and a wide range of authors. I've decided to return to college and pursue my English degree. I'm looking to get an MLS and eventually become a librarian.
Oh, and I love the Boston Redsox. :D

alright, hi.
my username is actually a moniker i thought of for who is arguably my favourite musican, Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre.
(if you've never heard of them, kindly do yourself a favour and listen. if you have, let's be friends.)
the nickname i (begrudgingly) go by is Mimi; it's disguising an even more undesirable real name.
i can never seem to describe myself in one or two clean sentences, as most seem to be able to, for they are varied, skewed, and more often than not are simply perceived as odd, to some degree. But here, I'll try:
I think in Serbian, speak in English, dream in French, struggle when reading Dostoevsky and Pushkin in Russian, and am learning German with a reckless abandon. I am eternally, inexplicably fascinated and in love with the majestic city of Vienna, rain and monsoons, far too many writers and poets to name, sleeping, the science of dreams, the moon, medicine, psychology, and the stillness and comfortable melancholia that comes with winter.

Hello,
just signed up and this is my first post.
I "attempt" to write poetry and love to read it more and gladly review/comment on others work, however be warned I am not a professional, in fact I am self taught for all the good that's done me. :(
Hope to read many fine works here, and thank you for this place of literate refuge!

Good evening, at least it after midnight where I live. What can I say about myself that would be profound? I guess the truth is always the best option. I am married, I have two children (one who teaches literature to high school students) the other who works at a hospital. My husband and I live in a zoo, no that is not a joke it is a fact. We run a small non profit zoo and somehow my life was brought here to live among the animals. It has enriched me, most likely is responsible for my children being who they are as they were brought up living in a zoo, and is a passion for which I have never grown weary.
Reading the previous posts I have to say I am dismayed at the lack of passion for literature as a university course or career. I love books, any books of any kind. I am a voracious reader and writer and believe that the written word is more powerful than any other art form. It brings our imaginations to life, we form pictures in our minds and travel on a journey with each turn of the page. Without literature both past and future we would be less than we are. Yes, I have a Masters in Science and I am a primatologist but for me the written word can change the world. For the work I do with endangered and exotic species the written word could possibly save a species from extinction. For it is the written word that gives me knowledge, that gives me the opportunity to share my knowledge, but more importantly to share my passion for those animals that struggle to survive. To create awareness of their stories and hope that their stories will not be heard as a history lesson but as a lesson that changed their fate. Okay, I guess I have done more than introduce myself, but you did ask for it :-)

I just finished a graduate program and landed on a nice job here in Houston, Texas. I am very busy trying to settle myself well in the company. But, I read as much as I can in between my projects. My main interest is poetry and read many poems in between my books and while reading a book. I look forward to participating in the forum even when the only thing I could do is reading your posts.

An expeditionary here. Let's clash, contradict, listen, make amends, unite and conquer.
Hoping to know other Scheherazade fans too!
Hi
Ayn rand is my favourite author. I have just finished Waiting for Godot and Dr Faustus.
She's one of my favorite too. =) Funny how I used to be so hesitant to lay my hands on her back back then.

Hi
I have just finished Waiting for Godot and Dr Faustus.
Have you seen its Film version...a masterpiece!!! Certainly it can not be compared to the theatrical performances, but this certainly goes closer...
Oops! Gues I did not introduce my self as in yet.
Hi All,
I am Ebonon, ofcourse its my pen-name and I am writing a novel on this imaginary island called Ebonon. Inlfuenced by Kafka's Noir Magical Realism, I am trying my best to create a new narrative structure and ambience in this one.
See, by now you must have noticed, if given a chance,I can brag about myself to glory. :P
So here I end my brief introduction.

Hello, everyone. This is the first time I have posted on this site. I am eager to begin a new adventure. I am an English teacher in a high school alternative learning environment.
My students are at-risk in many areas and I continue to look for innovative and relevant ways to introduce and teach the literature for the students. I work with World Literature, American Literature and Britsh Literature. I need all the help I can get. So bring it on and forward and all that you have to help me arm my arsenal to make literature a real and heartwarming adventure for my students as it is to me.
