What is "root beer"? - I've never really been hip to this beverage, it's just some arcane reference in American texts to me. I guess it could be jolly old ginger beer, but root beer could be anything, like parsnips or spuds or mandrake maybe... And yeah, like I'd never heard of a Twinky until Ghost Busters. I asked my Sister in Law what it was, (she's from Indiana) and she said it was a disgusting chemical concoction designed for the corruption of American youth. Well that sorted out my Twinky problem, but what is "root beer"....?
Calidore
08-21-2013, 09:46 AM
Your sister-in-law is technically correct, but as is often the case, Twinkies are as good as they are not good for you.
Root beer is my personal favorite soda, especially the genuine naturally-flavored stuff (as opposed to artificially-flavored mass-market) when I can get some. From Wikipedia:
There are hundreds of root beer brands in the United States, produced in every U.S. state.[1] It is a flavor almost exclusive to North America, yet there are a few brands from other nations around the world, such as the UK, the Philippines, and Thailand where the flavor often varies considerably from the typical North American drink.[2] There is no standardized recipe. The primary ingredient, artificial sassafras flavoring, is complemented with other flavors. Common flavorings are vanilla, wintergreen, cherry tree bark, licorice root, sarsaparilla root, nutmeg, acacia, anise, molasses, cinnamon, clove, and honey.
A similar soft drink, sarsaparilla, was popular in cowboy days, and can still be found in some stores as an alt-soda.
Barq's has 2 major differences from root beer: No head, which root beer has, and caffeine, which no root beer has. It's basically a sort-of-root-beer-flavored cola, and not even very good.

Many thanks for broadening my horizons Calidor. However now I know what root beer is, can you describe to me what sassafras flavoured beer tastes like? :D I know what all the other flavourings taste like, but if they need to make it taste of all that other stuff, it must be pretty bad! :D

I don't like it very much either, for similar reasons. Then again, I prefer using the fact that to using in point of fact. I even find it hard to believe that I wrote it for the first time in my life, but it's just to stand my ground on why I dislike it. It sounds so overly conceited to my ear, as though someone were trying to present themselves as a steadfast scholar all day long. Yech! http://smiles.kolobok.us/standart/bad.gif

Welcome to LitNet dear poet.
My random thought on your poem: your poem has a surrealistic quality that is quite touching. I think of my sister who passed on way before her time quite often: holidays, birthdays, when I see a photo, her "passing day", fb postings by family, etc. Have had way too many passings recently in my life - it's hard not to dwell upon them.

But statistics also show that young boys don't read a lot and many find it even difficult but at the same time our cultural minister was visiting schools telling kids the importance of reading he put this bill before congress and won. politics.

Been thinking about this lately . . . for almost a week.
We need to turn the war machine OFF. . it's a machine, like a refrigerator. . it has a lot of parts, it's larger, but it's still a machine, and it can be turned off. Nothing is impossible - all it takes is for us, collectively, to wake up from it.

Hmm, that's very interesting! I still feel I may have been mistaken - it was only a few bars, and it could have been another song that sounded similar. But you finding an older one with Vivaldi music makes me think it's slightly more likely. . It's so funny, and I have to laugh, because the thought just occurred to me I may have only heard it because I like the song.
In any case, you inspired me to look up an old thread I made about it. . I've always especially loved the second stanza. . It's one of those that seems just as, if not more beautiful, to me now.

Infinite peace is there at the heart of every living entity, and all it takes to reach it is the wish, the desire, the absolute aspiration for attainment, and it is instantly found. There is nothing external, nothing consumption-related to reach it - only the wish for peace, and it's achieved. This infinite peace is within every cell of every from of the universe, every living being and every soul. Because it is there in everything, all are inherently sacred, holy and divine - all that's necessary to regain this sovereignty, this beauty, is the aspiration to reach such peace, and then life becomes beautiful again.

("...ah, but I do wonder how one is ever going to get one's grammar right towards those readers who are moving targets in what they choose to read, and whose level of grammatical understanding is probably less than yours to begin with..." ventured the goblin not sure really, but then adding "...learn grammar yes, but don't lose sight of your readers in the process, where they'll forgive your errors for your individuality there but who will no doubt shy away from anyone who goes marching their writings along the page in some time honoured grammatical goosestep...", and then the goblin smiled, saying "...grammar is like the time in its way, one tells the time when asked, and knows the time for oneself too, but one doesn't keep telling people the time, nor follows that time by the second neither...", yet maybe the goblin wasn't being helpful here so he fell silent hoping that he hadn't offended anyone in his honesty, while the slot for its part was simply hungry and wondered if the goblin had finished the post yet, saying "...goblin, you had to learn to unlearn, leave be and let go lest those years will catch up with you once more, you're younger now...")

Poor tea, Helga, is one of the great disappointments the world has to offer. I say this as an (prepare for the understatement of the year) avid tea drinker. I've learned a few tips and tricks over the years. Only the loose leaf, never the bags; while the expensive stuff may not always be great, as you've tragically learned, it is more often than not the better stuff, because quality costs money; and when you find a brand you like, stick with it.

You talk to the TV. I am glad to read this, as it is a steady habit of mine. I am forever rewriting the show as I'm watching it, because shows generally don't go the way I want them to. I insert lines of dialogue, play along, as it were. I comment to the characters, writers and producers. I keep thinking that when interactive VR comes along, driven by AI that will respond to your wishes and moods on the fly, I will at last find satisfaction. I hope.

Fun fact: In 1896 Nicephorus Glycas, the 80 year old Bishop of Lesbos, dropped dead. As per the traditions of the Greek Orthodox Church, his body was laid out in state in his church for mourners to shuffle past. On the second day of this activity, the faithful were alarmed when the body suddenly sat bolt upright and demanded to know what everyone was staring at. He then continued in his role of bishop for several more years before taking a second, more successful, run at death.

Well said. There's a nod to the Segway in there somewhere, since Dean Kamen intended it to be the next logical evolutionary step from walking. I think they could make a comeback if we were legally allowed to rev them up to full speed and run over much slower pedestrians, with their less evolved bipedal activity. It has a Darwinian logic to it. What do you think?

Actually, if you think about it, that's pretty much how it works. Walking is just a controlled fall; if you don't get the other leg forward quickly enough to prop you up, down you go.

Well the boys down at the gym have started calling me the human tripod. I'm not sure why.
But in all honesty, I'd rather have my balls pounded flat with a wooden mallet than climb on a Segway. That contraption would rob me of a good walk. I feel great when I'm in motion. Everything works better - circulation, respiration, nervous system. My mind works better. I have ideas. I get hornier than usual. I'd rather walk than ride. I'd rather take the stairs than the elevator. I'd rather pedal a bicycle than ride a motorbike. I'd rather paddle a canoe than float in a motorboat.
I love the West African greeting - "How da body." I had a friend from Dakar who would always greet me with - "Aye, Sancho, How da Body?" I'd smile and pat my chest, belly, thighs, and lower legs and reply - "Da body good today."
Keep moving, my friends. You stop, you rust.

Why is it called tourist season if we can't shoot at them?
I went to a bookstore and asked the sales woman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
If a man is standing in the middle of the forest speaking and there is no woman around to hear him . . . is he still wrong?
If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation?
Is there another word for synonym?
Isn't it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do "practice?"
Where do forest rangers go to "get away from it all?"
Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they afraid someone will clean them?

All I need is money. Every problem that I have can be fixed with money. Everything that makes me happy can be paid for with money. There is nothing on this Earth that I could ever want or need that can't be paid for with money. I would be perfectly content with being limited to the limitless power of money and money only. All I need is money.
Money. Only money. And nothing but money. Absolutely nothing else at all whatsoever, except money. FINAL
