Jester went and got mail for the library :P Jester sees that classes may be boring and offered no usefull information to anthropology and instead has been focusing on gathering sleep since insomnia struck again last night. jester is desperatly tired but if sleeps now she'll be up all night like last night which is not good but bound to happen becuase writing makes her hyper and overactive and wide awake despite having lain in bed for two hours after the story first took shape. Anyone else suffers from hyperactivity caused by writing like Jester? Make her think she should write in the monrin instead of the evening but that's when she gets the urge to write....

i just had this horrible revelation today: if you divide 22 by 7 you get 3.14, specifically 3.142857, with the 142857 repeated endlessly. my instructor confirmed this and asked me where i got 3.14159. well, grampa was a math teacher. he was like, "22/7 is pi. It is 3.14" i know this. but 3.142857 is not pi, so where did 3.14159 etc. come from??? *bewildered emoticon.* you see how i spend class time? :D
Taliesin
11-10-2004, 02:33 PM
Well, you cannot express pi as q/p, where q and p are full numbers. 22/7 is about pi.
3,141...... you can get it from a lots of places.
For example, draw straight parallel lines at a paper with the distance between two lines is 2n. Take needle which's length is n. Drop it on the paper manymany times. The relationship between the times when the needle touches a line and when it does not, should be pi.
Also there was somewhere smth like (1-1/3+1/5-1/7....)*4=pi
We don't remember if the things are accurate, but they're something like that.

SPEAKING OF PI... Oh boy in math today... we ... like x^3 + x^2 +5x + 3 =f(x).... or something close to that... and on (0, infinity) and then....
we swung it around 360 degrees... and found the area of that shape... (there was an assymptote it approached at 0) anyways... the answer was pi units cubed.
it was cool.
... yes... i just said that math was cool. don't shoot me. I usually get headaches at around 8:30 because of my morning Calculus class.

Thanskgiving falls on the last Thursday in November. The pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving:
The Pilgrims were not in good condition. They were
living in dirt-covered shelters, there was a shortage of
food, and nearly half of them had died during the winter.
They obviously needed help and the two men were a welcome
sight. Squanto, who probably knew more English than any
other Indian in North America at that time, decided to stay
with the Pilgrims for the next few months and teach them
how to survive in this new place. He brought them deer meat
and beaver skins. He taught them how to cultivate corn and
other new vegetables and how to build Indian-style houses.
He pointed out poisonous plants and showed how other plants
could be used as medicine. He explained how to dig and cook
clams, how to get sap from the maple trees, use fish for
fertilizer, and dozens of other skills needed for their
survival.
By the time fall arrived things were going much better
for the Pilgrims, thanks to the help they had received. The
corn they planted had grown well. There was enough food to
last the winter. They were living comfortably in their
Indian-style wigwams and had also managed to build one
European-style building out of squared logs. This was their
church. They were now in better health, and they knew more
about surviving in this new land. The Pilgrims decided to
have a thanksgiving feast to celebrate their good fortune.
They had observed thanksgiving feasts in November as
religious obligations in England for many years before
coming to the New World.

Thanksgiving has become more about being thankful for the good things in your life than a celebration of the pilgrims coming here. Sometimes there is the ironic comments but not many. But I can't really speak for the native American point of view.

Stanislaw and subterranean, and a few others ... I think you are being quite disrespectful and irrational at this point, with your distasteful siglines and sensationalising tactics to disrupt the harmony of these forums.
I hope it's not turning any newbies off when they first join.
I'm glad I'm not the only one here who has *no* issue whatsoever with the moderation of these forums.
Why don't you start your own forum?
Have no rules whatsoever, let people post whatever they want, let them run havoc through threads, flooding, hikacking and basically running things their own way.
Of course you will let them do that right? ;)
I guarantee you, that someone, somewhere, at some point, somehow, will end up pissing you off. You can't please everyone all the time.
I have yet to come across a forum of any signifigant traffic that does *not* have Mods or an Administrator who oversees and controls things to some extent.
I'm sorry you're so upset about all of this, does it also have anything to do with your quest to get a `Homework Requests' thread? because those bother you so much too?
Maybe it's time for some to step away from the comp and go outside and get a breath of fresh air :D

I hope that we can restrict our complaints to Private Messages, be they valid or not, until desperate action needs to be taken... and so far... i see no need for desperate action...

Ok, new random thought before I go, while vainly trying to respond to sub's quiz a while back (I forgot to copy and paste before I hit send and was bumped off), I was reminded of my Froggy Christmas CD (the most embarassing one I have). I put it on today for fun because it's rather cute, especially with the frogs singing Blue Christmas. My birds went crazy! They loved it! Now I feel I dug a hole, that I'll have to put that CD on every once in a while to make them happy. All I wanted was a mindless study break! :santasmil :p

ostracize: (coming from the Greek word ostrakon) to banish from a group, society, etc.
from Webster's New World Dictionary
"After 488 B.C., the Athenians began to make use of an instrument devised to protect the citizenry against overly ambitious politicians. Called ostracism, this practice enabled the members of the assembly to write on a broken pottery fragment (ostrakon) the name of the person they most disliked or considered most harmful to the polis. Frequently, this was a person whose policy, approved at first by the assembly, had failed. A person who received a majority (if at least six thousand votes were cast) was exiled for ten years, although the practical Athenians often recalled a man from exile if they needed him."

If someone has hurt you or you dislike them enough to wish to erase them from your memory, it will actually be very difficult to do so. Simply because they affect you strongly and strong feelings and people who cause them are hard to ignore.
Good luck!

i want to have a rest. i would like the world to stop for a moment (and everyone could have his/her rest also.. pretending that we are all stopped or 'paused')
bosses, then, would become more like normal human beings (lol, hope there are no many bosses round here :goof: ) and we could take care of our feelings for one short moment, dont worrying by trivial things like 'i have to correct these exams, or i have to write the analysis for the customer..'

I'm a pretty easy going guy. I like people. I'd like to consider myself fun-loving; a nice dude to be around.
But when I get some breakfast at the cafeteria, and I am enjoying my food, is it really necessary to walk into my cubicle to ask what I am having, while you lean over my shoulder and smell what I am eating?
…Like you've never seen or smelt a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich before.
C'mon people. Have some manners. It's just not polite.
This happens to me quite frequently. Next time it does occur, I am going to start barking. Rabid-like. Ferociously. I am going to crouch in a fetal position on my chair, with my sandwich in hand and egg yolk running down my chin. And I am going to bark and snap at anyone who comes close.
And the people around my office will begin to call me Cro-Magnon Man! And I will be satisfied.

There are so many little things that depress a bit so that together they make up a frustration.
First, We cannot go to countryside for winter solstice/christmas. Grandma broke her hip and is therefore in the city with us and We cannot go to the countryside. No forests. No knee-deep snow. No silent snow-covered meadows. City.
Second, this awful plastic shopping holiday which you feel extremely intensely when you're in the city.
Third, We have grown up. We do not believe in Christmas anymore. No anxiousness. Just tediousity, knowledge and pain.
Fourth, We are telling this stuff here like a stupid whining six-year-old.

So I stopped using hair gel like a couple of years ago. But I was recently informed that my hair is thin, and that I do not need to use conditioner because it makes it look flat. So I started using this really nice hair cream that Santa brought me a few Xmas'es back. I have been putting a little in my hair after each shower, instead of using conditioner. It moisturizes and strengthens my hair. Well, this morning, I used the last of this hair cream, which I have had for years. And I do not know where to buy some more.

Rhetorical, I know, but.
One may feel bad the first day of the new year, but at the end of the year they'll feel great again after the next party, only to feel bad the next year. Only to continue the cycle.
Though I've personally yet to experience any useful new years celebrations. heh

What qualifies a new year celebration (or any celebration, really) as useful?

Oh yeah, indeed. Especially when you get tired and sleepy during sitting an exam for example, now that's not a good time for getting rid of one's insomnia.

I'm taking care of my buddy's dog while he's away. It's a little pug named Chloe. She's so cute, and so sweet. One acquiantance of mine asked if the name pug orginated from a combo of the words, pup and pig. I thought it sounded right on. Can anyone verify this?
Anyway, my random thought of the day is this...
When dogs are kind of relaxing, and they hear funny noises, I love how they let out like this muffled, under-the-breath bark. It's not a full bark, and they sense something odd is taking place, but it's like they don't have the energy to go nuts.
Also, I let Chloe sleep in my bed, although that is not usually what she is allowed to do. Don't tell!

"The Pug is stubby and muscular with a wide chest, straight, very strong front legs and well-muscled hind legs. They receive their name "Pug" from the Latin word that means "clenched fist". To communicate with humans Pugs make a grunting nasal noise, somewhat like a pig. Being snuggled down at your feet snoring or being close to you, but unobtrusive, are some of Pugs' favorite activities. Pugs are a dog who tends to make people smile because they are convinced of their own importance. Pugs are adaptable, sociable and good-natured. "

The exams are closer and closer and the only thing I've been doing recently is larning. Pholosophy, theory of literature, English literature, English history and culture... The worst of all, however, are weird words we need to learn: marsupial, hypotenuse, shallot... Where will I use words like that?

the cooks julienned the shallots and cut the potatoes into right triangles, then on the hypotenuse (a hypotenuse cut? - lol) as the guests (who were waiting very patiently for their first course - leek potato soup) gathered at the door to see the noisy kitty outside, only to find that they were staring at a marsupial. many of course thought that it was a huge mouse, when in reality it was an opossum.
