that's very cool. i often wondered where that slang came from, in fact that is written down as one of the things i wanted to ask the etymologist guy....very good observation.

LOL actually, that may be so. But my AP English dude told us (when we read The Sun Also Rises *puke*) that it was brought back from France by the WWI soldiers. Because the French slang for hookers was "les poules" -- chickens.

LoL. Well, I think the word "chicks" went through the same phase as the word "hoe" is now. Which some people use to describe all women. Which isn't nice. But I guess that's why "chick" is a traditionally guy thing to say. I think with the whole beat/rock'n'roll scene it started to mean just "girl."

simon
05-05-2004, 02:42 AM
I have only heard women referred to as chicks or hoes in movies.

papayahed
05-05-2004, 09:11 AM
I refer to women as chicks but usually only when I'm talking to friends and I am woman.

And back in the day my friends and I were gonna form a rock band that was antithetical to New Kids on the Block (that dates me doesn't it?) called New hoes in the 'hood.

i have a tendency to refer to women as chicks on occasion. but to me a chick is a specific type of female. as was mentioned earlier (in this thread or another, i dont remember) there are women who are obsessed with makeup and shopping and really girly girl activities...they are chicks to me. something nice to look at, but with little substance. (and yes women look at women too)

papayahed
05-05-2004, 01:21 PM
I always think women who smack their gum as "chicks"

How come there really aren't that many names for guys?

verybaddmom
05-05-2004, 01:30 PM
well, the most common one where i live is not flattering and sounds alot like chicks.....
but you are right, i think. there are way less nickname-type handles for men....
hmmmmm...
perhaps we should make some up, in the name of equality for the sexes.

I greet the women I know, "hey chick", but I only hang out with 'cool chicks', not the catty, vile or vicious kind.

I can think of several names to call men, but they wouldn't be allowed here. Anyway, I adore men and wouldn't call them any bad names.

verybaddmom
05-05-2004, 11:12 PM
shhh...lara...didnt you hear? we are not allowed to discuss slang chicks on this thread. it is ONLY for random thoughts. the forum police will force us back on track....

Oh, thanks verybadmom! I had a look at that link and got relief. I'm walking here with fear that someone can laugh at my English. The fact that it's forbidden here made me glad. Thanks to ADMIN and to others who put up with mistakes of foreigners

emily655321
05-08-2004, 08:48 AM
Hehe Yeah, Kik wasn't laughing at their English, though, Ravana. There are plenty of people here for whom English isn't their first language, but no one (I don't anyway) thinks twice about it. We're all just here talking and having fun. :D Don't worry about it.

ravana
05-08-2004, 11:15 AM
Thanks, em! I don't know the reason but you seemed me a little abrupt, so hearing this from you is really great for me.

verybaddmom
05-08-2004, 11:23 AM
Ravana, Em's sense of humor is fast and at times dry, but always to be taken with a grain of salt. her heart is big and warm and always kind (so far as i can see), so never ever take her comments as a personal poke in the ribs. there is little offense to be taken here, as i think that everyone here is accepting and friendly. if there is a comment made that can be taken in more than one way, take it in the nicest possible way. subtleties, sarcasm and dry wit abound here....

as far as language barriers..there are none: if you are not understood someone will ask for clarification. for the most part i hear the posts as though they are spoken, and for fun i like to add little accents. having people from all backgrounds adds a depth to this forum that is missing on many others.

ravana

Oh, I almost forgot my random thought. Okay, two random thoughts.

BAD: She renegged, the witch! AAAGGHHH!!! *levels several small cities* Last week I called to follow up on my application for like the fifth time, and the manager said, "Oh, great! We need people. How soon would you be able to start? Call me next Sunday and we'll have the schedules all worked out." So I called today and she said, "Oh, thanks Emily. We don't need a new person right now, but we'll be hanging on to your name, all right?" And I very sweetly said, "Okay, that's fine. Thanks. Bye."   I'm so angry. So I don't have a job after all. She definitely led me to believe I was starting, like THIS WEEK.

GOOD: Small children in church usually suck, especially due to their utter lack of volume control. But it kind of made my day this time. :D I was late to go over the psalm with the organist, so I was hurrying down to the church. There was an old lady and like a 4-year-old girl, the old lady said "hi," I said "hi," I hurried past them. When I was about five feet past the little girl said loudly to her grandma, "She's pretty." Grandma was like, a little embarrassed, "Yes, she is, isn't she?"
:D :D :D :D :D

Random thought: Why do you always have to run to catch the ice cream man? Is he not paying attention? Is it part of the experience? Being older than 10 I'd rather calmly approach the truck and order my ice cream, maybe I'm supposed to go to the store now to get it, but there's little amusment in that approach to quench my sweettooth.

papayahed
05-10-2004, 01:47 PM
It's our primal tendency to hunt for food. It's an accomplishment to run down prey (in this case ice cream) on the street rather than go into the store and see shelves lined with "prey" ...

emily655321
05-10-2004, 02:10 PM
Nah, it's because ice cream man is a menial, hot, part-time summer job and he gets paid whether he stops or not. He'd prefer not to have to deal with swarms of children trying to make up their mind and shouting at him all at once.

I was wondering, where did "stiff upper lip" come from?

emily655321
05-10-2004, 04:09 PM
Yeah I knew about the rule of thumb. I think that used to be part of American law too, until the 19th c. or something.

It means you look serious; your lip isn't bent in a smile or a frown. I believe.

Shea
05-10-2004, 04:16 PM

This may seem like a stupid question, but is everybody here literature majors or doing something in that field?

emily655321
05-10-2004, 04:59 PM
That's a good question. I'm gonna go for visual art of some kind, but if the school had majors/minors, I'd say I'm minoring in literature. I find it to be more interesting, but art just happens to come most easily. Even if I'm uninspired I can pick something from life. Not many people would pay just to read a description of a street scene or something.

(am doing in-depth flash cards for muscles, and my text is missing three - three i tell you! - that the anatomy coloring book has. and i'm only on musk-els of the face.)

emily655321
05-11-2004, 01:34 PM
Yeah, during the anatomy part of my Psychology class he always asked us to identify the thalamus. But almost no diagrams included it. There were two in the text book and apparently it was there somewhere in the brain cross-section transparency, but I couldn't decide which thing it was. The two diagrams in the same book showed it in two different places! But he always asked us to identify it on quizzes and tests and I don't think I ever got it right. (I still only know that it's one of the little dark lobes under the hypothalamus.)

mmph.
my text is missing the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, the levator anguli oris, and the nasalis. they're shown in diagrams, but nothing!'s written about the origins, insertions, actions, et ceteras.
glug.
um, the hypothalumus is under the thalamus. like hypoglycemics are under the weather. ;)
don't take that last bit literally, anyone! :D

ooh. that is so cool Joe. imagine your bum might be warmed right now by the residual heat left from mine! lol
its so neat that we really have no idea where we all are in the big scope of things. i was talking to my bf about this forum a bit over the last week, as he really had NO idea how much time i spend on it (long distance relationships make things like that easier to miss) and he was stunned when i told him. and btw, he thought we were all geeks. i defended us for a while, and then came to the conclusion that maybe he's right, but who cares...we are smart geeks. anyhow, i was trying to explain that feeling of comraderie that i feel on here; how i was helped along with my writers block, how i can share virtually everything i might think and not be judged etc. and its really difficult to explain to someone that is not a part of it. really kind of cool. makes me feel like part of a secret society (that i can take with me when i move!)

What is the difference between weeds & flowers?

emily655321

weeds are anything you didn't plant that you don't want to grow. Flowers can be weeds.

simon
05-13-2004, 05:45 PM
And then there are invasive plants...

emily655321
05-13-2004, 05:47 PM
You mean the ones that latch onto your arm and grow into your skin and throw roots into your marrow and live off of your organs until your insides grow into a massive tangle of vines and your skin puffs out and rips off leaving you a giant plant monster?

Yeah, those suck.

simon
05-13-2004, 05:51 PM
That is exactly why I never leave the house, my appearance seems to cause many ailments such as fainting, screaming, and the parental instinct of child protection, meaning the useless arm fling, as though that would save a child from an oncoming car crash or my abrasive looks.
But I have enjoyed my planty looks, they are constantly growing and I like change.

simon

In the event of it being from Mission Impossible I'm sure it was an idea inspired by the James Bond genius. And it would certainly save me all that time digging my bomb shelter, although I still might persue that, and just read letters on the sly in my delivery van with the mini camera.
