Some random thoughts:

I reached 2000 posts tonight.

I truly became shopping addicted. This is so sad. And it's getting expensive. And for the first time in my life I have too much choice about what to wear - I used to have just enough stuff... And I'm liking stuff which is in fashion and not even cheap...
I'm becoming more and more ordinary, let's face it. In some of my manners, even some of my ideas and tastes... I don't even think that deeply anymore, poems are a forgotten habit... Brain is totally gone. It makes me feel somehow old, somehow immature.

I'm still in doubt about plans for the summer...and even more in doubt about plans for the future in general. If I manage to concentrate on exams and final paper, I'll graduate in November...and then? I dont feel like studying more, but I dont feel like my education is complete...and I still want to travel and do student things, not settle down and get a job that would probably leave me no freedom... I might stop for one year and then start studying again if I feel like it, but starting again at 25 would mean being a student till I'm almost 30, and that makes me feel old. And I dont want to study here, I must find out if there's a way to get financial help to study abroad. Too many things to evaluate, the end of Uni is really a weird step in life, the end of certainties...

Exams, pfff... i'm so pissed off about one exam that is really ruining my plans and will cause me to have to struggle a lot to manage to do all the exams i want to do this session... And it's just an integration of one exam I did in Hungary but for the teacher here it wasnt enough... fair enough, shame that she gave me so much extra work that it ends up in making me work double...

End of randomness.

Wow, I'm sort of the same, Koa. I think I've spent more money on clothes the last three months than the previous three years combined. I also must've bought 200+ books the same past three months, which is also more books than I bought the previous three years combined. Even though most of the books were used and cost 50-cents each, still... (I used to settle with books from the library.)

But I've made some resolution. Now that I have *enough* clothes in my closet and *enough* books to last till my retirement years, the next time I want to spend my money, I should think about the little kids in Africa and send some donations to them instead of wasting my money on things I mostly don't need anyway.

I hear you ajoe... I also think of all my travels and even if I often get things for as cheap as possible (be it journey ticket or a tshirt), it all adds up...

The randomness of today:
The real heat arrived...today was almost like august! Still a spring breeze is blowing so that in the shadow you can survive, but it's a real preview of summer... It makes me wish I am anywhere else... these past weeks have been so pleasant,I was hoping it was going to last a bit more :(

heat? lucky, lucky you!!! it was so frigid today that i became convalescent! trade?

*wonders if that's a bad idea, because someone's gotta have better weather to barter for than either of us! :p

Jay
05-30-2005, 04:01 AM
DEAL!!! I take your frigid weather, you take the 30+C! *packs bags*
(should I tell you that heavy rains are expected from today on? But if it's gonna rain today I'll try my luck with becoming the first female pope :p)

Monica

It was something like 35 degrees today, and it took me over one-and-a-half hour to come back from university. And there were millions of people on the bus. I almost melted :( Next week the exam session sterts and I have 4 exams, one of which lasts 5 hours. I'll die if it doesn't get cooler.

Jay
05-30-2005, 11:29 AM

We are going on our first LARP (live action role play) this saturday.
Weelaaah! We are very excited. We even have solved our clothing and transportation problems. Now there is only IG to think about.

Since the possibility that anyone here is going on the same LARP too is very small, we will give you infoabout our character. If you are taking part of it, don't read any further!Name: Taliesin. It is a celtic LARP. We are playing a bard. Our IG explanation to the name is that our father was also a bard and therefore named his only son after a legendary minstrel.
Age: 20 or 21.
The game focuses on a conflict between Vikings and Celts.
We are serving the king. Very loyal to him. And therefore we have done some things that the king may misunderstand - we have talked to a certain innkeepress and she has revealed her secret - she is gathering information and we are her eyes and ears in the court. To put it simple, we are spying for her. We believe she is up to no good and that someone (we) must know what she is up to. We have told the king about our suspicions, but he thinks that we are being paranoid (and OOG we agre with him)
So we are sortofa double-agent.
Also we hope that a merchant gives us some rare herbs that allow us to see the future. The old witch will be dead soon and we don't know whether her successor will help us perform the rite.
There are so many chances to do something wrong. Say the innkeepress is actually innocent and we are causing confusion. Say that she gives use a secret, but it is a false one andwhen we tell it to the king, they will understand that we were never on their side. Or say they trust us, but then the king finds out and misunderstands...
Or maybe the king is forced to abdictate and they come to power and perhaps they understand that we were never loyal to them...
And the innkeepress has had much much more LARP experience than we. She has a greater probability to outdiplomate us.

The only good thing is that bards have sort of a immunity. Bards are not allowed to be killed. (say when a commander would kill an enemys bard, his own men would kill him in shock)
But actually we are looking forward to it.

Random thought: interesting how different cultures, and/or sub-cultures, especially those connected through music, literature, etc., result in looking much like each other. Yesterday, having forgotten of a big event of an 80's band scheduled to play at a very large venue, I walked nearby toward a public-transit stop from my favorite coffeehouse. I have no intention of offending anyone, as even I like a lot of 80's rock, but never have I encountered so many mullets.

This might involve the p word sorry if it does but I need to vent.

Today I got in trouble during graduation practice for no apparent reason with a bunch of other "guys". We then had to write about what we "did". A friend Adam refused and a teacher got all pissing and it turned into some kind of thing about respect for America's soldiers and that you had to do this or that out of respect and that you had to salute the flag and that kind of stuff. I got to thinking of what the soldiers of the past died for, and I realized that the soldiers from long ago fought and died so we could have the choice to salute the flag or not. To do what you feel like not what is told (in the sense of you have to do this in honor of the soldiers). This pissed me off greatly because that teacher was really not being the one who honored those who died for us, and I dislike hypocrites.

GruesomeBugman
06-03-2005, 09:21 PM
well mostly I'd agree, but in school it's generally accepted to do what you're told, else one could argue that you should do nothing and pass, because you chose to do nothing.

Bongitybongbong
06-03-2005, 09:27 PM

This reminded me of a story I heard in college. It came from a professor, so I have no reason to doubt it. A young man at my high school (years before I attended there, which was roughly 150 years ago) experienced a similar situation at his graduation practice. He decided he didn't need to graduate after all, and the offending teacher was sure he would amount to nothing without his high school diploma. In all the years before and since, no graduate from my high school has ever achieved any sort of notoriety. But our most famous non-graduate is that young man....playwright Sam Shepard.

A question for Mono (obviously everyone can answer):

What do you mean with "health insurance"?
Sorry, I know this term, 'health insurance,' sounds very strange in its literal phrase.
Health insurance works strangely similarly to vehicle insurance or home insurance. Basically, a common person with health insurance pays a base amount of money (usually monthly) for coverage of seeing doctors, nurses, receiving medications or vaccines, and, though costing a little more, covering also visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers.
During any doctor's visit, however, there usually requires a small initial "co-pay," which costs way less than not having health insurance and asking for any health care.

I could not agree more.
As a (hopefully) future nurse, I cannot place more emphasis on maintaining a healthy atmosphere, learning productive coping mechanisms for stress, and, overall, eating healthy over the overwhelmingly in-demand need of psychiatric medication (not, however, doubting those who really need it, of course).

For those who doesn't like being single! ;)

Annoying Things That Couples Say

By Michele Bender

Know how coupled-up folks just looove to make "helpful" remarks to single folk, like "You're just too picky"? Here's how to respond to their most irritating comments.

Sooner or later, it happens to all of us who are free agents. You're hanging out with members of the paired-up set, and you end up on the receiving end of a possibly well-intentioned but most definitely annoying comment about your single status. Sure, you can just seethe in silence. But if you'd like to reply, we're happy to help: Here, some comebacks, courtesy of top relationship experts...and one comedian.

Annoying couple comment #1: "So, how's the single life? Been on any wild and crazy dates lately?"
Shut-them up answer: "Why are you wondering? Looking for a vicarious thrill through me?"

—Dr. Lillian Glass, psychologist and author of Toxic People

Annoying couple comment #2: "There are so many great single people out there—maybe you're being too picky."

Shut-them up answer: "Yeah, you're right. It's just I have these things called standards."

—Matt Iseman, comedian

Annoying couple comment #3: "You can't expect to meet anyone if you aren't getting yourself out there! Have you gone to singles' events? Tried tennis? Talked to a matchmaker or something?"

Shut-them up answer: "You're absolutely right. But it's difficult because I'm shy/busy/fill in the blank, so if you know some single men/women, introduce me!"

—Dr. Lillian Glass

Annoying couple comment #4: "You're so lucky you're single—so much freedom, independence, etc..."

Shut-them up answer: "You're right. We give up a lot when we get married."

—Laurie Puhn, lawyer and author of Instant Persuasion: How to Change Your Words to Change Your Life

Annoying couple comment #5: "You don't need to worry—you're a guy. Men get better-looking when they're older and can have kids at 70."

Shut-them up answer: "Good point. My wife might not even be born yet."

—Matt Iseman

Annoying couple comment #6: "You dog, you! Tell me about your latest exploits."

Shut-them up answer: "Oh, but I can't. They're all X-rated." (Add a smug smile for maximum effect.)

—Gilda Carle, Ph.D., relationship expert and author of Don't Bet on the Prince! How to Have the Man You Want by Betting on Yourself

Annoying couple comment #7: "It's hard being alone during the holidays, isn't it?"

Shut-them up answer: "Yeah, but I save a fortune on presents."

—Matt Iseman

Annoying couple comment #8: "You know, you should've stuck with ___ ( insert name of an ex)."

Shut-them up answer: "I'm not the kind to settle, thanks. I'm waiting for my perfect match, like you did." (Yes, flattery works!)

—Dr. Lillian Glass

Annoying couple comment #9: "Ever get lonely?"

Shut-them up answer: "Yeah, but then I think about being with the same person forever, and the feeling goes away."

—Matt Iseman

Annoying couple comment #10: "It sure must be hard out there as a single person these days, huh?"

Shut-them up answer: "Not. It's actually pretty wonderful—very freeing and empowering."

-Dr. Gilda Carle

Rites are dangerous things to do.
We, for instance, did a rite (ok, had a witch to do it to us) on the celtic-viking larp to see the future, but, alas, the future was dark and we went blind and started hearing voices.

my random thought today was...

...I want to be a man. I've decided a long time ago that in my next life I want to be male... for 2 reasons: one...you can imagine :D, the second is because I costantly wonder about how men feel friendship....I mean friendship between men. But today i was feeling that I was bored of being a woman, and reason like a woman, and not knowing how it really is to be a man and have male friends, and not being good at driving ;) and at technical stuff, and doing things in a more free way because in some cases men are allowed to... Maybe it means that really there is no equality... or more probably it's just my newest paranoia....

Guys really do most things in ease...we feel that if we try we've done good. Male friends usually just hang out, borrow cd's and other things, at times wrestle just for the censored of it, and the guys talk about X-rated stufff...alot. Unless it's for the future (report that will make or break graduating in turn breaking a making it much harder to fend for yourself and future family), it's more relaxed.

Random thought for today - why did my ancestors go so far up north? It´s summer here - the sunniest place in Sweden today has 60,8 degrees F, the coldest 39,2 F.
In southern climates people go to the beach, the men wear little clothing, the sun shines.... Why , oh why did some people in the dawn of time decide to go as far up north as they could, and then stay there?

Dearest Koa,

If you would like to know how it feels like to be a man, you don't need to go the whole nine yards and change your gender... Simply try doing these:

bored of reasoning like a woman >>>>> stop reasoning all together because you know that you have to be right... you are a man after all!

not knowing how it is to have male friends >>>>> grab a beer, grunt, cough, nod, smirk, snicker and make 'uhm, yeah...' sounds while chatting with your friends (scatching unbecoming body parts every 5 mins is good too)

not being good at driving >>>>> stop asking for directions (claim you know a short cut or trying to avoid traffic jams if you get lost), ignore traffic rules whenever you can, shout at people who go at speed limit for not going faster and keep changing lanes in the hope that it might take you wherever you are going 2 minutes quicker.

not being good at technical stuff >>>>> glare at instructions/manuals for 3 minutes and then throw them aside because you know it better (you are a man, remember?) and then spend the next 2 days to assemble a bookshelf (even though the manual claims it should not take more than 45 minutes. What do they know, anyway? Schmucks!)

doing things freely >>>>> disregard the expectations of others from you and assume that you are the centre of the universe and people are simply there to make life easier for you (this would also include social expectations such as showering regularly and being clean over all etc). Also, keep reminding yourself that your needs/wishes are more important than others' so watch that programme on TV rather than calling your friends! They have to understand! You are, after all, a man!

treat your car better than you treat your children.

set up rifts between your mother and your wife and then proclaim "I'm not taking sides."

listen intently to whatever rerun is playing on TV Land while tuning out your wife and children.

Shout at the sporting event playing on TV as if the players can really hear you but make your wife ask you everything three times before you answer.

Remember, life isn't about what's best for your family -- it's all about you! You do what you want and then let your wife clean up the mess.

Never apologize! You're the man!

On the subject of being a man.........

There are some ways that being a man is great (Scher mentioned most of them :D ), but we have social pressures tied to us too.

Firstly, why is generally taken as the man's responsibility to approach the woman? Do you enjoy watching us stumbling over words, trying to sound witty and intelligent, & then make a fool of ourselves?

Why do men have to pay when you go on a date? especially if I eat next to nothing, and the date forces food into her mouth like there is no tomorrow?

Why do you expect us to be able to fix things? Some guys I know cant do a thing, however they pretend to able to to fit society's idea....this is how most DIY projects end up failing (it's not that they dont want to follow the intructions - they in fact cant understand them!)

By the way, Scher missed one thing off her list:
When asked a question ..... never admit to not knowing the answer, this is especially true to when being given directions. Even if you have never heard of the place smile confidently and launch into a rapid speech (using hand gestures) insisting on a lot of left and right turns and approximate distances. If you can use bars or sport arenas as identifying landmarks.

LOL guys, I'm wordless with laughter...

Just a few comments... ihrocks, I dont want to be a man with wife and children... I just want to be a guy in his 20s...so Scher's advice actually fitted better...

Kilted well... I dont know why I assume it's a man who should do the first step (when I'm female that is ;)) but I'm absolutely bored of doing it myself!!! As for paying, well I dotn know but it feels good, at a first date at least...then I'd feel guilty about letting the guy pay at 35th date... (notice my use of the conditional tense).

Sometimes I joke about being a 'manly woman'... I mean, apart from my inability with driving and parking, and my inobservance (so far :D) of Scher's rules, I'm more male than any girl I know... I have to approach boys instead of being approached, I'm not afraid of coming home alone even when it's dark, I travel alone, I go to the toilet alone :D ... But sometimes I see a bunch of boys and I wonder how it'd be to be one of them... it's not so much about equality anyway, but it is really a question of how it feels...

eh-hem!!

Being a man is THIS!!!! being a woman is THAT!!!! Heheheh.....I laugh in your general direction........Ha!!!

You guys (.......hehehe) are completely off of the mark. Sure, there are men (and women) who are not only the template for what the media and social structure dictate as typical gender, but one or two people that each of us knows personally are probably THE idyllic worst examples!!!!

This is what a man really is: thoughtful, kind hearted to the needy and marginalized, generally hard working, fun loving, funny, creative, soft hearted underneath the cool facade, seeking enlightenment because of a need to understand deeper meanings-as a reason to exist, expanding horizons as opportunities present themselves, a bit of a risk taker, lover of poetry-flowers-sunsets-beer-fine wines-good food, continiously widening circle of friends, champion of children, a good cook, hygenic, fixer of ANYTHING needing fixing (at least willing to try), admitter of personal faults, frisbee throwing-golfing-softball-volleyball-playing good sport.....and I will continue if prodded.........

But really, I could be listing qualities of either gender.

And pointing out the extremes of any contrast of view is counterproductive.....it really only enhances and perpetuates the very things we are trying to eradicate on this little blue ball we call home. Except for the most worse examples of humankind, men and women are not all that different from each other. It is only the expounding on the obvious differences, and pointing out what each gender sees as flaws in the other that creates the fog of misunderstanding occasionly disrupting a clear view of each other......

Let the games begin..........

Interesting question, Nightshade. Can a human necessarily perceive objectively, in the first place? Perhaps by perceiving something from multiple perspectives (in an analytical and holistic manner) would get one closer to objectivity, as you asked "be distanced from it," but, as Immanuel Kant and Rene Descartes would reply, the senses have many faults, and as one person would distinguish red and orange, a color-blind person would call them the same. Could one conclude that red and orange have a difference, a color-blind person not have the same quality of perception, or that no difference between any colors exists?
Strange, strange, strange. Oddly, like you, I question the same too often.

80s rule!!!
------------------

why can't I stand the thought of my sort-of-ex having a girlfriend? maybe cos even as much as he liked me i'm too insignificant to find anyone, and as much as i didnt like him that much, he has plenty of girls... i think i lost count... it all boils down to my old companion called envy i guess... it's weird, i havent talked to him for ages and felt better than ever, and just a short conversation about some problems i had with pc left me so depressed... as depressed as when i had him...

it was nice to have a computer genius at my disposal though, i always had someone to solve my problems... i guess i'll learn to do that by myself as well, as i've learnt to do anything without the help of a man (it was a long-distance relationship anyway).

and why there is noone on messenger when you want to talk?

Do you need stalked? I can recommend a few parties if you're shopping for a stalker. :D
