Random? Alright! So this is going to be one of those long, rambling, stream-of-conscience Sancho-posts that doesn’t really have a point. It may have something to do with child brain development. I don’t know.

Yeah, so anyway, lately my neighbors have been kind of down on me about my yard. They think I’m bringing property values down around here. “Frankie-the-Yankee” from across the street has this “putting-green” lawn (which is the standard) and I have more of an “ecosystem” at my house. Well, I’m out there yesterday with one of those hose-end sprayers trying to feed the flowers and kill the weeds and keep everybody’s property value from tanking due to my lack of horticultural acumen.

Sure enough, the neighborhood urchins start showing up. I have this dog, “Maggie,” and the kids really dig her. So they’re all out there in my yard playing Frisbee, riding the dog, and trying not to get bitten. My next door neighbor, “Umbear,” arrives and immediately takes an interest in my fertilizing technique. (Umbear is around 6 years old, she is Korean, but she learned to talk in Georgia, so she sounds like a cracker)

Um: “Hey meester Sancho, what’cha doin’?”

For some strange reason, I like to talk to children as though they are adults. I don’t think that they resent me for this.

Sanch: “I’m trying to kill the weeds and feed the flowers and keep everybody’s property values from tanking due to my lack of agricultural acumen. I bought this sprayer contraption for 12.95 at the Home Depot today, Umbear”

Um: “What’s that green stuff?”

Sanch: “That’s ‘Miracle Grow,’ it’s high in nitrogen so it helps to green-up stuff real quick and it makes guys like me think that we’ve got a real green thumb when actually we’re just screwing up the environment with this crap”

Um: “Umm”

Sanch: “Yeah, Umbear you know, plants need to eat just like you and me, so that’s what I’m doing; I’m feeding these flowers.”

Um: “Phew! That stuff stinks.”

I’m thinking, - What the hell is she talking about? Well, I look down, and right next to her little pink sandal is a great big-ole wet dog turd.

Sanch: “Umbear, this plant food has no smell. What stinks is that big pile of dog crap that you’re standing next to.”

Um: “Uwe, Maggie made this?”

Sanch: (proudly) “Yep. In fact, there are piles of dog crap all over my yard.”

Um: “where?”

Sanch: “You tell me, Umbear”

By this time, the rest of the neighborhood deck-apes have caught on to the game and are running around my yard on some weird sort of a scavenger hunt for dog turds. - “Here’s one! Here’s one! Here’s one over here. Jeeesus Christ, they’re everywhere!”

Well, last weekend we had a block party in my ‘hood and I was in charge of drinks (go figure). The theme was tropical so I was making a bunch of those Rum-based boat drinks. Anyway, it involved simulated coconut cups and little paper umbrellas. I had several packages of those tooth-pick umbrellas left over.

I said, “Hey kids, when you find one – stick one of these umbrellas in it.” – I’m thinking - that’ll make ‘em easier to find, and I won’t have to just chop ‘em up with the lawn mower this time. In pretty short order my yard was looking like a Tiki garden.

Well naturally, ‘bout that time, my wife drives up in her car on her way home from work. I can see her confusion as she slows down, rolls down the window, looks out at all of the multicolored paper umbrellas sticking out of dog turds in our yard. She gives me one of those, “Sancho, you putz” looks and says, “I’m not even going to ask.”

What!?

So, that’s my random thought for the day.

hehe Sancho that's a crack up I can just picture your yards with tons of little umbrellas sticking out of dog poo. May i suggest wearing a grass skirt when you "collect " the umbrellas.

Actually i just wanted to post to see how my new avatar looks.

Ajoe, lets say that if I had a doctor and would ever let that doctor near me that doctor would say you suffer from AB, Acute Bitterness, and if your not careful it will escalate to CB, Cronic Bitterness and there's no turning back after that. My sunny smile throws people off.

Sancho

Ah yes, the ubiquitous “they,” they’re every where, those guys. (don't think it'll happen, but never say, "never.")

Thank You, amuse. Happiness can be contagious and reading your post made me happy.

Papaya, I dig the new avatar and I’d’ve worn a grass skirt if I’d’ve thought of it, but I wound up wearing a festive aloha shirt instead. I was going to just leave ‘em there for awhile because the little nippers seemed proud of their work. But I had to take action because, unbeknownst to me, the bambino brigade had escalated their assault to a neighborhood wide campaign. So with heavy heart, and bucket and shovel in hand, I had to follow their path of destruction yesterday. I was somewhat responsible after all.

Sancho, that was truly wonderful. well written, expressive, and very vivid imagery. i can almost smell the dog turds, and i get to see the umbrellas sticking out at various angles all over the yard. i also really liked the way you described the childs diction and voice. i know this was not supposed to be taken as a sample of writing, but as a random thought. however, I think that if you cant write your thoughts, well...you know. i like your narrative style, is what im saying. i read this to my son, who thought it pretty funny, he was still laughing when he left for school

simon

VBM is right about your sense of dialog Sancho. Your random thought has no dull or confusing points, is funny and eloquent. It is a viniette.

And (think of many expetives) "they" better get their act together, while I try furiously to get married to a Canadian. I sent out emails last night to all the guys I knew from University asking them to marry me, somehow I don't think any of them will say yes.

Good thing he didn’t have a friend named “Sean.”

A similar thing happened to me, but worse. When I first came to the U.S., the guy sitting next to me in class was named Sean. I knew how his name was spelled, but I thought I kept hearing other people calling him something like "Shawn," so because I wasn't sure, whenever I needed to call him, I called him Hey instead until I eventually learned that English is such a mess up language where spelling do not determine pronunciation.

Also, I used to pronounce Shea "She-a" instead of "Shay." :D

i was on "Radio Times". and, may i add, also massively inept. :p (hours on the phone do nothing for talk-show intelligence.)
anyway, Karen Jay Fowler was discussing her new book, The Jane Austen Book Club and i mentioned that in an on-line format, one doesn't need to worry about gender or hanging out having gossip and high tea with fuddy-duddy old ladies smelling like talc and guys don't have any compunction 'bout contributing. (ok, so there was no mention of talc, food was cited as a great reason to do it person [:D] and it sounded much worse than that.) also mentioned we're discussing notre dame, and have p&p as an option for next month.

but! there i was, in the bathroom because the horns were braying - traffic on the one way street outside was not moving over 1 mph/kph (i don't even live downtown) - and i thought, well hell, why am i protecting her radio listeners from the world outside? what if i were on I-95 and there was plenty of real traffic, or an ambulance?
and what if i were pregnant and had to end the call abruptly: "Excuse me gals, my water just broke."

why doesn't anything real happen on the radio??! :(
why didn't i say that? :D

em, you're right. Of course Wilde wrote about Italy's Ravenna, not about me.

After reading that poem I think Ravenna was not so unimportant as Koa told.
Adieu, Ravenna!
Adieu! Adieu! yon silver lamp, the moon,
Which turns our midnight into perfect noon,
Doth surely light thy towers, guarding well
Where Dante sleeps, where Byron loved to dwell.

Ravenna inspired O.Wilde to write whole poem about it ( "O much-loved city!) This and the names of Dante and Byron already make it more important.

Doesn't George Bush waffle! Although I don't live in America, we seem in England to get to hear a lot of his speeches..cos he does speech an awful lot doesn't he...and on and on and on! Do you have 'hankies' in America?

Ravana,
Banu is a totally awesome name. very original. i explained my son's name on the "character thread" and the reasons why he hates it, but basically because his dad named him after himself, and their relationship is not good. and there are a lot of nicknames to be taken from it as well...anyhow, i support his choice to change his name, because i had nothing to do with the original choice. however, if i had had an opportunity to have some input into his name, and had given it much thought and planning, i would expect him to wait till he was old enough to decide. the problem with names is that they partially define who you are, and when you have a tiny infant, you have no idea who they are....it makes it tough. i sometimes wonder how our names affect our behaviour and our own definitions of self....hmmm...maybe a new thread?

emily655321
06-12-2004, 11:40 PM
Absolutely.

I think Banu is a lovely name too, btw. It sounds exotic, because it isn't a common sound to hear in English. As with any name, though, whether that's good or bad depends on the feelings of the person named. I think it sounds elegant and mysterious. :)

No I don't mean your choice is a pity, I mean the admin's refusal to consider contemporary political discussion is a pity - even within the context of lit. After all, if you can't discuss Thoreau's "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience" in the current political climate, with a new draft potentially coming, what's the point?

Oh well.

emily655321
06-13-2004, 02:08 AM
We get away with plenty of [not-so]subtle jibes here and there, since as far as I've seen Fool (a.k.a. I'mthefoolonthehill) is the only conservative within earshot. ;) (just take a read through "[OCD] Haiku Thread Compiled" in Personal Poetry). But as a general rule, I think it does help to preserve civility within the forums. Discussing the politics of civil disobedience in reference to Thoreau would come under "except relating to lit." But, for instance, a General Chat thread of "For or Against the War" would most definitely NOT.

Hey I never meant to lead to the political..talking about George Bush..I dont understand American politics anyway - but I reckon Mr Bush is good at telling bedtime stories..have the kids asleep in no time, and everyone else. I really am surprised that discussing religion is allowed on here (though I am glad that it is) when politics isn't allowed because in my experience people can get as heated..and perhaps even more heated discussing religion as they do discussing politics. I've found the worst places for argument are Christian discussion lists. I avoid them now as I find many people have closed minds not given to considering other points of view or even allowing them. Perhaps political discussion gets to be the same? Does any one know any good, friendly places for general discussion on the internet?

Sorry you didn't understand me Amuse - I didn't realise I was being obscure. I simply meant President Bush's voice would send the kids plus everyone else to sleep. Haven't read any other threads concerning religion versus politics..but not that interested anyway, it was just a thought that occured to me. The posts on the subject must have been before I joined.

emily655321
06-13-2004, 08:54 PM
With the current political climate being as volatile as it is, mentioning Bush in any context is an invitation to passionate debate, and I agree fully that recent politics have nothing to do with literature or personal insight, and should therefore be kept out of the forum.

Religious texts, on the other hand, are a major part of the literary history of all cultures. Therefore, the discussion of religion can be very interesting and valuable --providing, of course, that the debate adheres to the subject of a specific religious text or passage, and doesn't veer off into moral crusades or feelings/intent of personal offense. And that it stays in the Religious Texts forum, so as not to provoke those who don't wish to take part.

I think Admin and the members here together have done remarkably well at maintaining an atmosphere of tolerance and respect. Certainly far beyond the petty bickerings of all other boards I've encountered.

I wasn't commenting on Bush's politics of which I know nothing..nor anything of the current political climate in America...merely on Mr Bush's boring voice and long speeches.

I think that there is very little difference between the merits or otherwise of discussing politics or religion and both are valuable in the context of history...and in fact are inseparable expecially in Britain where the church and state have been linked since time immemorial. It would be impossible to discuss the religious differences between protestand and catholic fraternities and the contention it brings in Northern Ireland without reference to politics and it's political history. These are extremely complex and it would be impossible to discuss any history of Northern Ireland without reference to both. But anyway...this thread looked like fun and was fun but this is getting serious...

Does this mean you have three cats Ajoe...your cat, it's sister and it's kitten? But anyway..we only think we own cats..they know better. Cats are clever, cunning, arrogant, cruel - soft eyed, affectionate, dependent and extremely lovable for some strange reason.

I've never been anywhere more humid than Florida. Last weekend I played my harp for an outdoor wedding about an hour after it rained. I was so glad it was a very short wedding. My fingers kept sticking to the strings! Good rule of thumb for Florida outdoor weddings, March is probably the best month!

I remember the ten days of summer that I spent in Paris. I drank bottle after bottle of water and rarely had to go to the bathroom. But it was still more barable than the humidity of Florida!

I'm old fashioned but I still like to see the titles underlined, then a simple "by line."

The older I get, (and Chriiiiist I'm gettin' old) the more I think that Pigs are way too smart to be eaten. My neighbor keeps pigs. Chester Whites, I think - a misnomer in this neck of the woods since they're mostly red from the red clay around here. I like to go over and visit them from time to time. They wag their curly little tails when they see me. Their radar dish ears independently search back and forth for a signal. Anyhow, I don't think that I can eat bacon anymore.

officially, according to the Modern Language Association, we are to cite the name of the book in italics (or underlined, if hand written) and if it is a short story, or work in a bigger work, such as a poem from an anthology, it should be in quotes. the author is first name last. for example,
"The Sonne Rising"
-Donne, John
but of course, that was the last time i looked; they change their rules at least once a week, so who knows what they want us to do now!

Did it hurt? Stupid question i know, what I mean is: was it worth the pain?

People ask me all the time if my eyebrow piercing hurts. If it hurt would I be walking around with it?????

verybaddmom
07-06-2004, 09:48 AM
well, honestly the piercing itself was a breeze, sort of like if you took really long fingernails and pinched your tongue as hard as you can (doesnt actually hurt as much as it sounds like it would)
however...that said, today it is crazy sore...like someone punched me in the tongue. so, i think i will talk very little today...and just suck on some ice. i dumped some oatmeal down my throat today, literally...a little bit on a spoon, head back, mouth wide open...scrape oatmeal off spoon, hope it drops into throat (if not, push it there with finger)...nummy

and to answer your question...yes, worth it. i cant wait to see my boyfriends face when he sees it. will make it all worth while (hes on a training course, in Ontario for a month.)

poor papaya...i think that if you are skilled at what you do, then the hiring process should be more hinged upon that, rather than if you have body art that is not technically "mainstream". the thing is, piercings are becoming more and more common, to the point of almost being a cultural thing, and piercings have been accepted in various cultures without shame or punishment for centuries. i suppose that its our stiff conservative 'business' ideals that hold back progress in the area of self expression, but...still..

goodness no, emily. no peroxide and no listerine. you wouldnt use peroxide even on a non-oral piercing..EVER. for all my body piercings i used just neutrogena soap to clean with twice a day, and saltwater solution soaks slightly more often.
for my current piercing, i use a sea salt solution and i rinse everytime i put anything in my mouth (including a cigarette) and that, my dear, is it. i brush my teeth just like normal now, and i suck on a lot of ice chips to keep the swelling down (popsicles are a pain cause the top bead really is in the way, and it really doesnt feel good to bump it)
i ate dinner tonight too....im on a roll!

lol...nice sancho!

i realized tonight that one of my biggest pet peeves is pharmacutical companies advertising on tv, especially before their products have been approved for use. all you get is: "if you think fledexherine (or whatever *insert unpronouncable name here*) might be right for you, call your doctor", or worse yet they give you some random images and then a name of a product. no information to be had.
i dont know though if that is worse than the ones where they say "blah blah may not be right for everyone. may cause skin rash, heart attacks, gout, ulcers, bleeding gums, excessive gas, the plague, etc..do not use if currently alive or breathing."
drug companies.... :rage:
ahhh. okay....rant over, i think.

Online image storage, so you can post pics instead of attachments. Tinypic is great for things like the puffin heads and your avatar, cause you don't have to save them in an online album; you can save the address if you want, or never see it again. Only it's not good for personal pics, because if it happens to be posted on a page that gets a lot of hits, they put the pic on a list of "top viewed pics" on their site. I forgot to tell you about them; I just found them recently.

My random thought: while watching the news I keep wondering what the journalist who's reading the news is thinking... I'd die to know what they're actually thinking when they announce things in such a neutral, 'imposed' (???random word) tone... when they tell that a woman has been "horribly killed and made into pieces by her son" with almost the same voice they use to announce the adverts... They have something in mind, and they dont show it... Or when they mess a word and have to repeat it twice before getting it, or when they cough and apologise, or when there are technical problems and they'd probably like to scream but they have to smile and be sorry... I want to read their minds!!!!!! Should we open a thread about this? :D

Well, I can't think of anything else right now, but since I'm just going into college I want to actually study something I'm interested in, not just "Secondary School Education". Know what I mean? I'd rather study the subjects I would teach than the subject of how to teach. Is it possible to go on to graduate studies in education without having an undergraduate degree in education?

Plus, I don't know if I would be any good as a teacher. Any other ideas, just to keep my options open?

verybaddmom
07-22-2004, 10:41 PM
oh definitely. you should look into it where you are, but here, i can complete my BA (major in English) and then do my grad studies in education, and come out of it fully qualified to teach high school. i would prefer to teach college, myself, and i would be qualified, but it seems that (in BC, Canada anyways) the colleges are hiring more and more phd's to teach, even where a master's would be sufficient.
the thing about teaching is that you can sort of pick your students (to a certain degree). see, I would totally suck teaching small children, or even kids my son's age (he's 12) but high school? not so much. ya know? so needless to say, i will NOT be doing my education degree in elementary ed.....
