Police are putting unruly youngsters through their paces on an eight-week "knight school", to teach them some of the ways of medieval knights. The Lincolnshire scheme has been hailed a success in improving behaviour, so what kind of lessons could knights teach youngsters today?

Knights of old were either virtuous and honest men who lived according to a code of chivalry, or a bunch of marauding looters who were lucky to get a good write up in the history books.

Whatever the reality, are there some values associated with chivalry which could be applied today? We canvassed opinion among medieval experts.

1. Generosity was important. Even though knights were of a certain status in society, with servants and followers, they were expected to be generous in handing out rewards. For example, in battle a knight may take quite a lot of booty but would be expected to distribute that to followers in recognition of their service to him.

Lesson for children today - Share.

2. Mercy is one of the key concepts of chivalry. Fighting with another knight, if one offers defeat then the other should exercise mercy and be gracious in victory. The whole concept of ransoming was based on this. A knight would honour and respect a fellow knight when fighting him or when holding him captive.

Lesson for today - If you get in a tussle and win, go easy on the other kid.

3. Loyalty to the king or the nobles was absolutely crucial. That would mean abiding by the rules and recognising that there's a superior authority and in order to be chivalrous you have to be loyal to the person above you.

Lesson for today - Respect your elders.

4. Exercise power responsibly. They didn't get rid of violence but they tried to limit it to justified causes.

Lesson for children today - Just because you're the biggest in the class, don't throw your weight around.

5. Protect the weak. There's also a sense that the strong should protect the weak who are unable to look after themselves.

Lesson for today - Stand up to bullies and gangs who pick on other children.

6. Justice. Seek always the path of "right", unencumbered by bias or personal interest. Recognize that the sword of justice can be a terrible thing, so it must be tempered by humanity and mercy.

Lesson for today - Fight for what's right.

7. Humility. Value first the contributions of others; do not boast of your own accomplishments, let others do this for you. Tell the deeds of others before your own, according them the renown rightfully earned through virtuous deeds.

Lesson for today - Give credit to your pals.

And a few lessons not to learn...

8. Crusading, which is about fighting for the faith and against those who believe in Islam.

Lesson for today - Respect other religions.

9. Wielding a very sharp implement.

Lesson for today: Don't carry knives.

10. Courtly love, between champions and ladies, which is rather inapplicable to the modern world.

Lesson for today - Don't think the girls will be impressed.

i had an argument with a co-worker today because he made a comment that i called racist. he said that we should hire a *insert random visible minority here* applicant because he would work harder than the average canadian, because he would want to prove himself because he was from a minority group.
is it racist to stereotype and categorize people, even if its in a positive manner? isnt racism harmful? so was his comment harmful?

Question:
is it racist to stereotype and categorize people, even if its in a positive manner? isnt racism harmful? so was his comment harmful?

Well, I would find it harmful if I was (insert choice here) with that kind of comment being said in front of me. I mean, would he say it in front of a person of the race of which he was speaking? I respond to that kind of thing immediately too, speak now think later. But damn, it makes me mad too.
I attacked (verbally only) a young guy in the bar on Halloween who was dressed up like a KKK member, gave him a big speech and made him give me the pillow case he wore on his head. Great for the moment, I felt silly afterwards, I mean, calm down a little, right? Wrong? I never understand, how much do you tolerate as the observer without making people around you scared to speak.

Often, when I was your age, I couldn't stand kids. I changed my mind when I helped my wife raise two of our own. Then it was only other people's kids who got on my nerves. Ha!

By the way, your parents didn't ask to be born, either. Nobody does.

Good luck, Helga! I'm sure you'll make a great mom. I'd give you some advice, but I don't have children myself yet! I know what you mean by good kids and bad kids. They come through my store everyday. I've tried to be very observant of the different parents and why their kids behave the way they do. But I guess I won't really know anything until I have my own.

I eat zuchini squash every week and occasionally yellow summer squash, but today I bought butternut squash for the first time in decades. When I cut it open, I discovered it is mainly a mass of inedible seeds and gunk. The cooking instruction printed on the label was written for aliens from Pluto. How do I cook this damn thing -- or did I buy an ornamental gourd?

HA! Beats Me. I tried making Butternut squash Risotto once and it was a complete disaster. I usually get acorn squash and microwave it. But I do have a recipe that says to half the squash, put it in a cssarole dish face down, put in about a 1/4 - 1/2 inch of water, mix some butter, and brown sugar in the water first and cook. I'm guesing 375? until soft?

Note: I just checked foodnetwork.com and Juan Carlos Cruz says you can microwave for butternut for 10 minutes.

Haven't owned a microwave in ages. Ever since I nuked some food wrapped in aluminum foil and went back in time.

Guess I'll try the regular oven, even though baking doesn't work with zuchini. Turns extremely bitter for some strange reason. Must fry or boil it.

Really? I've never tried baking zucchini, I generally grill mine, ok its really frying but I pretend because I have one of those pans with the bumps to simulate grilling. Let me know how it turns out......I'm intrigued and I may want to revisit the Butternut Squash risotto debacle. Vengence will be mine!

Starr, I bake my Butternut squash at about 350 for about 45 minutes with butter and brown sugar sprinkled liberally on top. the size of the squash will affect cooking time, so check it a few times.

Oh, and of course, scoop out all the seeds before cooking. ;)

Meanwhile, you all remain in my thoughts, and I hope to return fully in approaching time, as I have read a plethora of excellent books that I cannot wait to discuss, including A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold (on a good recommendation from shortysweetp), The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, Critique Of Practical Reason by Immanuel Kant (Kant's shortest and most challenging 'critique'), and I just started Love In The Time Of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

hullo,
just snuck a peek today and thought i should answer Starr. I had to leave because I lost someone to death and was facing four more imminent deaths and I could not cope. I am still exhausted and simply did not have the strength or the means to even share or talk. slowly I am getting better but I didn't know if i would ever come back.
I will try around Christmas, for now just getting all the gifts for my street ministry ready and finishing two childrens books for review by a house is all the strength tht i have for the moment. but i promise that not one of you is away from my thoughts for more than an hour or so.
one thing, i noticed there is a something or other of the year. I am grieved at this for the one thing i love about this forum is the fact that each person is treasured for whatever contribution he or she makes. Voting for someone seems like a popularity contest and makes me think that one now has to strive to be bigger, deeper and loftier in posting than before in order just to keep up., I would have to vote for everyone on this forum and mean it. it is just a thought
love you all, hopefully talk to you all around Christmas.

Because they don't shave their legs?

I don't mind leg hair on women. It's braided armpit hair that really gets to me.

Hairshaving aside ;), I'm about to enter my last week as student  Weird... It's possibly goign to be a busy week with the last preparations (oops...my speech is far from being ready, as graduation here is some kind of exam where I have to talk of the paper I wrote) and with some cultural events going around in the city which I want to attend (African movie festival, I love to get the rare chance to see movies that are not boringly usual Hollywood stuff!). Who knows, I might not be back on the forums until I'm a graduated woman :D (or in other words, an unemplyed who doesnt know what to do of her freedom ;)). Or I might be back here tomorrow or even later today to entertain you with my randomness ;)

LoL. Well, I think the word "chicks" went through the same phase as the word "hoe" is now. Which some people use to describe all women. Which isn't nice. But I guess that's why "chick" is a traditionally guy thing to say. I think with the whole beat/rock'n'roll scene it started to mean just "girl."
Oh, come on. Chick never meant whore. It started in the beatknik era, like cool and hip. Later on many hippy girls called themselves chicks. It's as innocent as the Beatles calling girls birds. I can't stand the word hoe. It was funny when Eddie Murphy first used it on Saturday Night Live comedy skits, but it's not funny anymore.

Yeah, I've never associated "chick" with "Hoe", especially since I often use the term "Chick". I'm thinking I might switch gears and start a 1 woman campaign to bring back the term "Dame" or "Board" or even "Skirt", I'm not sure which, I'm leaning towards "Skirt" though.

Near work there is a large bakery. So, quite often throughout the day the smell for bread baking fills the outside air. I imagine fluffy coissants, nice hearty breads, crusty italian bread ....Today I find out the bakery is attached to a McDonalds distribution center - all the bakery does is make those crap hamburger buns!! OK, and the english muffins but that's not really any consolation.

For many people worrying is not a matter of choice. It's more like a reflex action or personality trait. Of course it doesn't solve a problem in and of itself, but neither does not worrying.

That remind me a mexican saying: "Si tiene solución para que se preocupa y si no tiene solución para que se preocupa".

Is like: If it could be solve for what to worry and if it couldn't be solve for what to worry also.

what is the roots of the word romance and romantic, and what do they actually mean. I mean at one point it meant to tell a story etc. Then we had ROmantic as in the romantic age with byron keats etc etc so what does the word itself literally mean without the afixed meaning? Submarine literally means below sea sub terrain below earth so romance, anyone?

Romance is an old world for novel. (you know, in Estonian, there novel is called "romaan" and short story "novell" which often causes trouble to people)

We think it has something to do with the fact that they started writing books in their native tongues - and the most books at that time were written in countries where Romance languages where the native tongues. (french, italian, spanish, portuguese are the most well-known Romance languages)

I bet doesnt make sense anyway it could have another meaning in Proper/ classic arabic that Im not aware of.

For instance Lawn means colour in classic arabic but in some dilects asking whats your color means how are you.

When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries
And look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possess'd,
Desiring this man's art and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;
For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.
And it made me think of Oscar wilde

Sacriledge. British food is excellent. Toad in the hole, yorkshire pudding, Bangers and mash with onion gravy - all superb.
Okay, I'll bite. What is toad in the hole? (I know what Scottish bangers are -- mystery meat/slaughterhouse floor droppings soaked in saturated fat.)

I tried haggis when I was in Scotland. I'd probably get it again but I would have to share it with someone. I had a difficult time eating the whole thing because it was so heavily spiced. I met a woman there from Canada but who was Scottish. Her family did the Burns Supper every January. She was a big Burns fan and could quote a lot of his poetry. Including this one which of course is a ritual for the Burns Supper. You're actually supposed to talk to the haggis while reciting this.

Address to a Haggis by Robert Burns

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the puddin'-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak yer place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy o' a grace
As lang's my airm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o need,
While thro your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dicht,
An cut you up wi ready slicht,
Trenching your gushing entrails bricht,
Like onie ditch;
And then, Oh what a glorious sicht,
Warm-reekin, rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an strive:
Deil tak the hindmaist, on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
'Bethankit' hums.

Is there that ower his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi perfect sconner,
Looks down wi' sneering, scornfu view
On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him ower his trash,
As feckless as a wither'd rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,
His nieve a nit:
Thro bloody flood or field to dash,
Oh how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his wallie nieve a blade,
He'll make it whissle;
An legs an arms, an heads will sned,
Like taps o thrissle.

Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies:
But, if ye wish her gratefu prayer,
Gie her a Haggis!

My husband's so funny! He's been working on a christmas village complete with mountain range and roads (it's his seasonal hobby). The funny part is that there is a set of 'people' figures that my mom gave me, and there is a new set that he bought to scale for the buildings. I told him that his people look like hobbits and mine look like the race of men!

I have a Chistmas Village I usually put up, I bust out the Christmas Tunes and a little vino and decorate. This year I really have no place to put it, so I guess I'll skip the decorating and do everything else...

On a brigther note a vendor sent a small christmas tree to the guy in the office next to mine. Shopping today I found some small Star Wars ornaments that will be perfect for that tree!!!

Anyway i'm quite sure it has nothing to do with the spanish chicas which just means girls. In spanish there's another word to refer to girls in that way but i can't remember which one is at the momnt, 'cause spanish is full of that kind of words...a really amazing language believe me!!

I see we are back to the origin of the English slang chick for girl.

In American slang there are many other nicknames for women you might find equally offensive: babe, hoochee mama, wet dream, broad, hog (as in trolling for hogs), bimbo, bimbette (young bimbo), baby factory, etc. Guys are hunks, boy toys, muscle heads, walking paychecks, testosterone junkies, etc.

The war between the sexes (as writer James Thurber called it) is revealed in slang language.

Three definitions of the term chick:

Definition:
A young woman, particularly an attractive young woman.

Example:
1) I like Holly -- she's a cool chick!

Etymology:
A 'chick' is literally a young chicken or any baby bird. The use of 'chick' to refer to a young woman comes from 1920s African-American slang.

chick

(Zoology) A young bird.
(specifically) A young chicken.
(slang) A (beautiful) woman.

chick n 1. a female. The term is considered offensive by many females, but is used by other females to describe themselves (e.g. "biker chicks.") female

Something else I learned that I found quite interesting is the fact that "biddy" is also a chicken. As in that old "biddy" ought to mind her own business.

You know, regular exercise is the best and healtiest way to loose weight, and you can still eat the food you like. A temporary diet is usually of little use. When the diet is over the weight often comes back because old eating habbits are taken up again, amongst other reasons.

Regular exercise on the other hand raises the metabolic rate and thus increases the burning of energy. You'll also feel more energetic during the day by doing this. But I am sure you know all of this.

Anyway, temporary diet = bad, regular exercise = good.

A combination of a good (permanent)diet and regular exercise is the best.

LOL love this one :D

Well I actually thought that chick comes from the Spanish chica... but it got a different meaning in English as chica is neutral I suppose, as michela said... you know, semantic sliding or whatever it's called in English (slittamento semantico ;))

The one I've always found too funny is 'bimbo'. That is a word for 'child' in Italian, even a quite sweet one in some contexts. I think I'll never be able to prononuce that in the English sense ;)
