an end to simplicity has come... as we everlastingly complicate life.
We do not live life anymore; we act as if we do. Or impersonate living... ahh, your one simple (yet profound) thought of the day has made me want to think (or live) beyond similes...

Oh and Zeruiah... I feel you on that. I often wonder that myself. Perhaps because the Internet is so vast and connects so many people from different places...yet the people we encounter in our daily life are such a small part of the whole...or are stuck in some kind of mundane daily existence.

If you got your head knocked in such a fashion that the eyeball popped out of the socket, but was still attached to the optical nerve, would you be able to see forward and down/sideways (or whatever way the ball was looking) at the same time? Or would your brain not be able to comprehend that and just shut down the visual section? How about if you closed the eye still in your head?\\

I am totally going to go and post this in the ask Bakiryu thread too :D

The big bag con.

Ok, so as of May 1st a lot of the supermarkets around here have started charging 5c per bag - they are doing this under the pretense of being being environmentally responsible and encouraging customers to bring their own bags. I might buy this if the charge was only applied to plastic bags, but they charge for paper ones too - also the money is going into the store's backpocket and not to any environmental cause to determine ways to reduce landfill use (bags are recyclable)

I did some quick math and here is the extra revenue the stores are generating, but first some reasoned assumptions:

Average of 4 bags per customer - I am using an arbitary number here, but do not think it is absurd as for every person coming in and only leaving with one bag you can find someone doing a weeks shopping for a family and leaving with 10

Average of 950 customers per day - I work in retail in this town and am very familiar with number of transactions per day, this is a very conservative estimate

so now the figures:

$0.05 x 4 x 950 = $190/day x 365.25 = $69,397.50/year in extra income! Wow!!!

"you do the same as charitable persons do with their old clothes. You give them to the poor. Those rights that appear to be useless in their place are sent abroad, along with medicine and clothes, to people deprived of medicine, clothes and rights. It is in this way . . . that the Rights of Man become the rights of those who have no rights, the rights of bare human beings subjected to inhuman repression and inhuman conditions of existence. They become humanitarian rights, the rights of those who cannot enact them, the victims of the absolute denial of rights. For all this, they are not void. Political names and political places never become merely void. The void is filled by somebody or something else . . . if those who suffer inhuman repression are unable to enact the human rights that are their last recourse, then somebody else has to inherit their rights in order to enact them in their place. This is what is called the 'right to humanitarian interference' - a right that some nations assume to the supposed benefit of victimised populations, and very often against the advice of the humanitarian organisations themselves. The 'right to humanitarian interference' might be described as a sort of 'return to sender': the disused rights that had been sent to the rightless are sent back to the senders."

why do we have to openour throat when you are trying to speak deep?

mono
08-26-2009, 03:48 AM
I had a sore throat for a few days, saw a doctor before it got too bad, since I have always felt prone to respiratory ailments (even since infancy), luckily got on some antibiotics for acute bronchitis. Many of my symptoms disappeared within 36 hours, as expected, but the past few days, I have had no voice; my doctor believes that I may have simultaneously caught a bacterium as well as a virus, and I have ended up with laryngitis, which will subside by itself within a few more days. Fortunately, this virus-bacteria combination has occurred before, when I had quite a bout of tonsilitis years ago, so I never felt panicked, but it certainly takes the fun out of conversing, while the doctor has recommended me for total vocal rest.
It amazes me how little of life actually requires no speech. Certainly, I have not gone out-and-about quite as much, while feeling under the weather, but so much of going to cafes, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. functions on such an exchange basis that I have discovered there exist little to no open communication nor open-ended questions for the customer/consumer to answer; a customer can walk into a grocery store, such as Whole Foods, get what s/he needs (provided one knows where to find the items), then pay for the groceries without uttering a word; on a menu in a restaurant, a customer can point to what one wants, and everything else consists of close-ended questions. Luckily, I frequent many of the same cafes and restaurants, so those places have posed little problems, but I felt very embarrassed when one of the fare inspectors on the commuter trains thought my lack of speech came from not knowing any English, and he tried speaking to me in a myriad of languages before I could explain that I could not speak; perhaps he understood, or he may have thought me deaf.
My random thought of the day, since I have had little ability to communicate it to anyone? The majority of communication rarely exists for mandatory reasons, but more for leisure, convenience, or "passing the time." Sure, I miss speaking, especially when an attractive woman and I kept catching each other's eyes and smiling at each other in the cafe today, but what little speech seems required of us seems surprisingly easy to replace.

I am thinking everything is beautiful and interesting here. Meeting is beautiful and so is parting; taking rest or relaxing is pleasing so is working; reconciling is really nice and so is quarreling; for when you quarrel you will stimulate your nerves and that will excite you, for excitement is what we pine for after doing something in life. Life is beautiful and so is death; for we love life just because death has made life precious; for if there is no death we will be fed up with life. Hunger is sweet and so is food, for we would not devour food without hunger. Soothsaying is good so is abusing and insulting for without one the other does not exist. God is great so is the Devil and it is the idea of Devil the destroyer we have the idea of God the creator. Both of them do not confront the other’ existence, both are in pitch harmony

Though DanielBenoit posted it, I certainly agree with him, and to answer your question, at least in my opinion, Kafka's other novels read quite differently from his Metamorphosis and can seem a bit "heavier." The Trial has somewhat of a powerful ending, yet presented in a very stoic manner, while The Castle, perhaps contributed to from Kafka's death before the novel's completion, has a very uneventful conclusion; somehow, it makes some sense as to what occurs at the end, and certainly adds to the novel's very evident mystery and darkness, but leaves the reader with a lot to digest.

The Tay Bridge Disaster
William Topaz McGonagall

Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay!
Alas! I am very sorry to say
That ninety lives have been taken away
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

'Twas about seven o'clock at night,
And the wind it blew with all its might,
And the rain came pouring down,
And the dark clouds seem'd to frown,
And the Demon of the air seem'd to say-
"I'll blow down the Bridge of Tay."

When the train left Edinburgh
The passengers' hearts were light and felt no sorrow,
But Boreas blew a terrific gale,
Which made their hearts for to quail,
And many of the passengers with fear did say-
"I hope God will send us safe across the Bridge of Tay."

But when the train came near to Wormit Bay,
Boreas he did loud and angry bray,
And shook the central girders of the Bridge of Tay
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

So the train sped on with all its might,
And Bonnie Dundee soon hove in sight,
And the passengers' hearts felt light,
Thinking they would enjoy themselves on the New Year,
With their friends at home they lov'd most dear,
And wish them all a happy New Year.

So the train mov'd slowly along the Bridge of Tay,
Until it was about midway,
Then the central girders with a crash gave way,
And down went the train and passengers into the Tay!
The Storm Fiend did loudly bray,
Because ninety lives had been taken away,
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

As soon as the catastrophe came to be known
The alarm from mouth to mouth was blown,
And the cry rang out all o'er the town,
Good Heavens! the Tay Bridge is blown down,
And a passenger train from Edinburgh,
Which fill'd all the peoples hearts with sorrow,
And made them for to turn pale,
Because none of the passengers were sav'd to tell the tale
How the disaster happen'd on the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

It must have been an awful sight,
To witness in the dusky moonlight,
While the Storm Fiend did laugh, and angry did bray,
Along the Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
Oh! ill-fated Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
I must now conclude my lay
By telling the world fearlessly without the least dismay,
That your central girders would not have given way,
At least many sensible men do say,
Had they been supported on each side with buttresses,
At least many sensible men confesses,
For the stronger we our houses do build,
The less chance we have of being killed.

I wonder if non-aerosol hairsprays are really non-aerosol hairsprays.

I wonder, why do people worry over important issues? Why do they not just consider and resolve them, rather than make life a whole lot HARDER for everyone else?

I think that the fact that I am in such a high number of higher-than-usual-risk-of-suicide groups is both sort of amusing and also sort of creepy.

Remember Taliesin, it's a murder of crows--not a suicide of crows. If you must kill, please....kill others.

'Tis time to take a bow and thank your lucky stars that all, has not turned ugly... I guess I expected to much. It could be worse.

Agreed!

Undoubtedly, we are talking about entirely different things.

It could be worse. Wait... Yes, it could be.

You're in denial though.
I'm just annoying.

I love new socks, they're so springy too bad they don't stay like that throughout the socks life.

Ditto.

Somebody should invent that.

Every one of Stanley Kubrick's films from Dr. Strangelove on deal with violence in one form or another. Whether if it be cosmological, political, sociological, anarachatic, totalitarian, psychological or sexual, violence and its strong ties to human nature is probably the most prominent themes in his films. And like an indifferent pupper-master, he deals with these issues with a total lack of sentimentality or socail commentary and rather presents thing in such an artistic way, that it could be considered cruel. Just as most of Fellini's films were dances of existential wandering and confusion, while Scorsese's films were dances of the streets; Kubrick's films are elegant ballets of depravity.

Ooo, Peter Shaffer. Who will you play? (though I don't remember there being any young ladies your age in the play, though I could be mistaken, it's been so long since I've read it)

Why, oh why? Now I am going to have to change... Grrrrr. Just when I started getting used to things the way they are, I have to do a 360 and do the opposite. Argh!

There is a girl in her early twenties named Jill Mason who plays opposite Alan Strang.

I shouldn't have so much sugar... No... I should have more, so I can create a tolerance to it. Right now, my right leg is moving without my consent. Emm... My throat feels very tight... Nope, it doesn't. My leg isn't stopping.
I know why this is! It is the sugar enhanced energy I call KFC TINGLES!!

Thought 1: Oh I'm so annoying sometimes.

Thought 2: I feel so lonley :( Though I've had one of my special friends to converse with me on msn (thanks rimbaud ;) ) I'm just feeling greatly isolated from life. Somehow I just want to talk with every one of you because there you many interesting and kind people here that I could spend my whole life talking to each one of you for hours and be happy. Idk, I'm weird like that, but there's nothing I love more than a great lengthly conversation. Far too many people in my real life are too shallow. You all are wonderfully interesting, and if you ever want to talk with me (when I'm not busy) my msn adress is [email protected] and I also have a facebook. Work has just seemed to have drained me, and I have a real longing for human contact. (again, thank you rimbaud for talking with me for so long, it's really nice to talk to somebody amongst all of my tiredness.)

Of any of you who want to talk, I can't say that I will be available often, so don't expect much :S

Take the 'Plato' out of Platoism, and the 'phyics' out of metaphysics, and you've got a pretty decent view of philosophy.
