those bagless ones seem pretty cool! But they are expensive right? Dyson by far the best brand.

My last two have been bagless but they were not Dyson. The Dyson models are ridiculously expensive and, in my experience, no matter how much money you pay, a vacuum does not last more than three years so I usually opt for a non-flashy reputable brand (like Hoover, Samsung etc).

Dont worry! I dont think forking out rediculous amounts of money for the best brand is always the best idea. sometimes cheaper models last longer and you get your moneys worth out of them. My mams had the same Nilfisk for about 15 years.

I've had a Kenmore for about 4 years now. It's healthy enough for the time being. The only issue I have is that it needs a belt, but other than that all is well. I know my mom had the same brand for around 10 years, and she never had issues other than new belts, filters, etc. I know that mine has been used and abused, and it is still cleaning up dog hair like a pro :)

Whats with that! I mean, my mam has also had the same microwave since i was about five also. She also had a cooker and a washing machine for about ten years and after they were replaced, suddenly she was replacing them more frequantly. I think products just get crappier the more they are mass marketed.

They do I'm afraid. My husband explained it all to me in tech terms regarding the electronic components, but all I really understood is that they're crap . Things are made to be disposable. I remember my first cell phone, and the darn thing would still work like a charm if there was a service provider for it. My new shiny one will maybe make it the full two years before I'm due for another one. Disposable is the name of the game any more, but if they're made to just be thrown away it just seems awful that they charge as much as they do. $800 for a washer isn't bad if it will make it 10 years, but when it only lasts for 5... Then it isn't too much of a deal at all.

I have a motorola razor phone. its probably about 5 years old. I've had a couple of phones since that have lasted a year, year and a half. my sister had one of the old nokia 3210? phones and she had it for two years, my mam had it for two years, then i had it for a year and i think someone else still has it. must be at least 9 years old now. They really know how to make money. Build a not so trusty phone and people will buy a new one quicker.

My parents' first washing machine and fridge were Siemens and they lasted for 19 years, I think?

I think part of the problem is that these days the labour is so expensive (and the prices of the new ones are lower) that if you call a technician to fix your broken machine, it costs almost as much as a new one - especially if they replace a part. So, most people opt for a new one rather than having a "mended" machine.

Electronics... now heres something I can talk about!! ^_^

We had a microwave that we'd had for about 10 years it was awesome... I melted it by cooking a jacket potato in it for 45 minutes! We also had a very old kettle, about 8 years? I managed to get the wire hooked around the hob of the oven, went to make some soup... burnt through the wire. Electrical fire FTL! ... As for our hoover... I never touched that, Probs why our dyson made it to about 6/7 years before it bust!

Luckily my fiance's dad can fix anything! His tv blew up, actually smoked... if you look in it now, theres some missing parts which have been replaced by wire, lego and blu-tac. Tv works great now!

04-16-2010, 04:15 AM
I suppose I should promote a Dyson - we made parts for them and my last ever dispatch from the factory before we closed down was a completion of one of their orders. But - the model I actually owned did not actually last very long. I can't say I used it as frequently as Scher but it did battle with dog and cat hairs - but then, I expect a vac to do that as par for the course.

I have a Vax bagless model now: it was chosen for its light weight rather than its cleaning ability - no dogs or cats now but I was staggering about on two sticks at the time and needed something that would move with minimum effort. It is however as good as anything I've had previously. I've decided on cheap and cheerful for both vacs and washing machines - if I'm going to have to fork out for both within five years, as I've had to with both expensive and cheap models, then minimum outlay each time is for me. My toaster cost £3.45 four years ago - I shall not mind binning it when the time comes but at the moment it's going strong!

I can still only use an upright vac model - which type do you prefer - upright or cylinder?

How about those vacuums that also wash the carpets? I saw a Vax (I think?) which was around £100. Are they good?

Well, he may think they look silly but the man who is here doing my decorating for me has one in the back of his van and he is nothing if not fussy about cleaning up after himself, so he must think they work and are good value for money. (Yes, he is a Treasure.)

They used to make electronic appliances that were good and reliable, but that's not very profitable, so they've given up the habit.

My parents still have the microwave oven they bought when my older brother was born (its 25th birthday isn't that far away), and it's working as good as new despite its old age.

By the way, I never understood how people break their cell phones so easily. I've had three cell phones in 7 years, but both my old ones were still working fine when I changed them for a newer model. My first one was Nokia 5110, old already when I got it (it was huge compared to those 3310 and 3330 models everyone else had at that time), so I got a new one two years later. Then I got my recent one when I graduated from upper secondary school three years ago, and there hasn't been any problems with it at all, it doesn't even look worn.

Anyway, this vacuum cleaner conversation isn't really my thing. I can participate with saying that yes, I own one, and yes, it's been fine, but I think it's lonely and feels like I'm neglecting it

 I do all the things to a phone that you shouldn't do:D I drop them and run them through the washing machine. I let the kids play with them and forget to pull them out of the car in the hot summer sun. I'm just not good at caring for them, but then I run on the assumption that I get a new one every two years anyway, so no real point in worrying over it. I'm normally ready for one by the time my contract is up anyway. I love gadgets, and after two years the technology is changed enough that I am ready for a new toy.

Now, if only I could get my husband talked into the new computer that I want.

Spring has come very early it seems, and that means that my typical one month of swollen eyes will be two or three :( I would love to say I have a miracle cure to get rid of them, but I'm afraid that I just grin and bear it with the help of antihistamines. No bread, no pasta, no oatmeal, no cake, no cookies, no pizza, not much anything! There's wheat even in chicken nuggets, meatballs and some sausages. I mean - what the heck am I supposed to eat?

I can eat pop corn, but don't like it that much. And it's hardly a way to substitute proper breakfast...

I've now started to eat boiled eggs for snacks, but I can only eat about two per day or I'll get slightly nauseous... Don't know why, according to the tests I'm not allergic to eggs.

But really, a grain-free diet when one is also allergic to most fruit, vegetable and nuts and doesn't tolerate much spices either sure makes life complicated. And having to double check the ingredients list for every single product before purchasing when you go to grocery shopping gets really tiresome. Though after a while you find those few things you can still eat and it gets easier.

Also I've noticed that rice-based products don't keep hunger away that well, I'm constantly hungry nowadays.

Any good ideas how to keep ones thoughts from straying to all the forbidden yummy food?

I guess with time one gets used to not eating all the good things. I'm already finding this diet a bit easier, even if I'm still almost constantly hungry :p Really, if I for some reason had to diet for losing weight, I don't know what I'd do, as this diet is already hard enough with that kind of aspect considered  (Don't understand why I'm not losing any weight despite being constantly hungry, by the way. I also have IBS. I stopped eating red meat; but then I was tired all the time. I finally gave into really lean meats slowly, only such as filet mignon (I know it's expensive) and lean sirlon burger occasionally. I can't eat anything fried or fatty either, such as prime rib; I actually will vomit if I eat that. I also try to stay away from what I call harsh fiber. I have found I can tolerate oats better than than wheat even though I have been tested for wheat allergies and celiac's disease. I can hardly eat vegatables anymore - don't get me near a bean. I can basically eat these cooked or raw - spinach, aspargus, carrots, potatoes. My diet gets pretty boring. I try to spice things up, without using spice at all, but rather fresh grown or dried herbs. I can't eat onions either or immediately I am having severe stomach cramps. I can actually eat a small piece of raw but cooked for me is deadly. I can no longer eat salad, unless I have raw vegatables and a little raw spinach - forget lettuce. Recently, I am also trying to cut out anything at all processed - I sometimes will eat a Stouffers frozen meal but I think the additives can't really be good for one and those are loaded with sodium as well.

I also eat yogart everyday and take a few acidophilis tablets. Not really sure if those work that well. My IBS dr gave me a sample of something with probotics he claims does work much better but it's $40. dollars a month, so forget about me buying that.

Niamh, a few questions; what do you consider to be the soluable fiber? I have read online some about it but don't know that much. I always want to learn more and get tips that will help.

I think some of the diet is individual and what you find bothers you or triggers your symptoms. I have had this for a long time so I had time to test various foods before I came to the conclusion of what works for me and what doesn't. I am far from well on that score but I have other ailments adding to the mix in the same area - abdominal; so that complicates the matter. I am on a low acid diet for that condition but I didn't really know that would help IBS as well.

She's actually full blown allergic to it as I found when I tried her on the lactose free milk. She'll start having respiratory symptoms like nasal allergies if she gets too much. I try to still allow her to have a little since I'm hoping exposure will eventually win out, but I can only let her have 2-3 servings a week if I don't want to worry about her breathing at night :( I normally save it for things she would otherwise miss out on like real ice cream :D

Soya Kaas cheese (Mozzarella) isn't bad. I like that it melts really well which a lot of them don't. The only issue I have is that the other varieties don't taste much like what they say they are. The mozzarella is pretty close. I also try to find things made with coconut milk. She seems to prefer the taste, but since most of the non dairy foods out there are for adults choosing not to eat dairy everything is lacking in sweetness for her. She likes yogurt, but the non dairy kind is just too sour.

I've jokingly told my mom that I will start a business one day selling foods specifically for kids with food allergies  The market is sorely lacking in that area, and while it is a small population you can almost guarantee repeat business if the product is good ;) Now all I need is start up capital

Ladies,

Sorry for the interruption, but I need some fashion advice from you.

So, what do you think of a jeans & sport coat (no tie) look? Something similar to what's depicted here:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_rE4SDGCxsjI/Sgx44GPZrpI/AAAAAAAAAP4/_0ctVyLE50k/s320/best+dressed.jpg

And, if time or temperament allow, these follow up questions: (1) how "formal" is this set up? Is this a "wear to work" get up? After hours? Date night?

Gracias

Thanks: couple of occasions, actually. Work wear (I have several sport coats) and a night out with the Mrs. . . . It's so hard to "dress up" to go out with the cloths that you usually wear for work. How uninspiring. . . .

I have to take a probiotic. It's called Align. It helps. Problem is I forget to take it and it's one of those things you're supposed to do on a regular basis...

But when I take it like I am supposed to, I feel better. Normal to some degree.

ShalotThat's the one - Align. I don't know how expensive it is where you live; but it's rather expensive here. But you say it really works? I wish my dr would offer me more samples.

Thanks Niamh for that site. I will check it out now. I hope I find something to help me. It's so complicated; because I have the chronic bladder disease too (non bacterial condition) and the past year I have had recurring infections, as well. Some days I don't know where the pain is coming from. Anything which will help me is appreciated.

Align works for me. I did try a Philips brand Probiotic that so did not work AT ALL. I couldn't leave the house that day if you know what I'm saying...
So far, it's the only thing that has worked and this thing is so annoying that I will pay for it - it's about $30 - $35 per month around here. I could think of ways I'd rather spend that money but I also like feeling normal.

Thanks, Shalot. Thats good to know. Problem for me with spending the additional money on this suppliment is that I buy other suppliments I need for my chronic bladder condition and also this year the Medicare heath insurance plan is horrid - several of my drugs are no longer covered and therefore they are costing me plenty....over a dollar per pill. I am talking of pills I need 2 and even 6 times a day (one is half the strenght over the counter than the generic prescription drug). It's getting harder to make ends meet but I will definitely consider trying the Align since you gave it such a favorable report.

Niamh, the list of allowable soluble fiber foods is nearly all the things I can eat, too. Thanks for posting that; it backed up my own theories on what I could safely eat. I think I had seen that website before, ages ago and took note of which were soluable but oddly enough, mostly I have gone by trial and error. I just get so bored with my diet. I can eat some meat now such as very lean filet mignon; but mostly I have to keep it to a minimum. I get a little tired of chicken. I like fish, but it's so hard here to get it fresh. Is that they case there also in Ireland? Just curious.

Niamh, is the furniture nice? I've been thinking of ordering a sectional type seating, but it is quite expensive and I still need to buy their covers for it. The thing that I like is that I can invest in the furniture once, and if my tastes change in five years, all I need to do is buy maybe a new cover and not a whole new set. I've seen a good couch last 15 years before it was really broken down, and I would love something so durable. Too much is made to be disposable now, but I really don't want to spend a few thousand dollars on furniture every five to eight years.

That's pretty much what I thought since I wear skinny jeans to work a lot  I had looked at some of the other "bootie" type ones that are so popular at the moment, and I just couldn't see me wearing them. The black ones were much more something that you would expect to see me in.

Charm - I don't really like the platform, but I'll confess that it makes a bit more comfy on my feet after wearing them all day.

But if you drop something into the toilet and don't fish it out, what do you do? Just flush it and really really hope that the pipes won't get blocked?

--

I don't care that much about shoes. Sure it's nice to have a few pairs of pretty heels, but they are so uncomfortable if you have to walk any longer distances. I have a really expensive pair of shoes that are the best I've ever had. They are like a lighter version of hiking shoes, simple black and so comfortable to walk in. After getting used to those even a kilometre in normal flats hurts, not to talk about high-heeled shoes...

But at a party it's sure nice to wear a pretty pair of strappy heels :)

Jewelry I like. I almost never leave home without a necklace, I feel kind of naked without one.

Okay, with diamonds they might actually be worth quite a lot, but why on earth should one put real diamonds on a pair of shoes? Surely some cheaper or even fake gem would have worked the same... No one's going to take a closer look at them anyway.

What about dresses? Now the winter is over and it's getting warm again, so one can actually go out in a dress without freezing to death.

I bought a lovely new casual dress last week - as anyone who has looked at my profile page could guess, it's in my favourite colour, blue with some white in it. I couldn't find a photo of the dress on H&M's website, so I took a photo of my own. Sorry about the bad quality, I only have a webcam...

I am always dropping toilet paper rolls into the toilet. I swing around and catch hold of them on the holder. What a mess it is to fish those out - they definitely won't go down with a flush. Toilet paper here is not cheap either.

I recently dropped a watch in some dirt and decided to rinse it off. It was just a fashion watch with a white band. Still I liked it and kept it by my bedside; used it as a clock. I woke up and it was probably 4, but my watch said 2. I went to bed after 2 - what the heck? I then noticed all the little numbers must have been glued on and they all fell off inside the watch. I had to laugh. I have washed off my Timex watches many times and they survived, even if they got a mist or moisture in them. I think a few even went through the washer and dryer....the watch that keeps on ticking....

Hope your pretty watch is ok, Niamh. I really love that design. No way, *C*C would I fish anything out of a porta potty - yuk!

Annamirah, that dress is so cute...you look great in it. I love dresses myself. I can't wait to wear my sundresses again - so comfortable in the summer.

Pretty dress, annamariah - you look good in it.

Love those gypsy skirts, JW, especially that wine colour.

I am trying not to buy any summer clothes - I keep a 'travel wardrobe' for trips to warmer climes, everything in shades of blue so it all matches and cuts down on the packing. I've had my 'summer' holiday for this year (Egypt in February) so I really do not need anything this year and 'summer' is a relative term in wet Wales - but my favourite catalogue people have a new panel dress (very flattering on us Junoesque ladies) and I do like it so much......

I like that peasant skirt but I've seen some peasant skirts that are just downright dowdy so you have to be careful. The one in the picture is cool. i don't own a peasant skirt myself because I haven't seen any around here that are cool when I'm in the market for a skirt like that. It seems like everytime I go out with the intention of buying a peasant skirt, they all look more hillbillly than gypsy peasant so I don't buy them. Maybe it's just because the stores here suck.

Oh, and I bought another Maxi dress this week - I LOVE it. But since I am real short I had to get it out of the petite section and they only had a few patterns and I managed to get the last one in my size that I could actually wear. They had about 5 different patterns/prints of Maxi dresses in the petite section at this store but 3 of them had these padded boob tops that do not work out with my frame. And then the other print looked like something Ms. Roper would have worn. It was a hideous hot pink, black, orange and white flowery ugly fugly thing with a big flowery gemstone on the top :ack2: It's probably better that they didn't have more patterns because I would have ended up with five maxi dresses instead of 1. It's no fair though - in the section of the store for "normal" sized people, they always have more to choose from. It's no fair. It's discrimination against the short.

But the one I got is some green and black trippy pattern that you could get lost in. I wore it to work and had to wear a sweater shrug thing over it because of the boob factor and with the sweater it made me look like i had a big butt though the way the lines went. Man I am rambling rambling and nobody cares.

I guess the point of all this is that it's really hard to find decent clothes. You get something and it should work, but if it's cut wrong or something it just doesn't wear right.

Annamariah
04-29-2010, 08:57 AM
Shalot - I can sympathetize, it IS hard to find decent clothes if you are shorter than average, have bigger boobs than average, have shorter midriff than average and so on. Cute dress Anna, and Juniper, I love that skirt. I've been fancying the full length sundresses that I've seen around here, but they are not made for girls with as big a cup size as me. Mkhockenberry: The first one is definitely out for anyone with a big cup size - an extra frill on the top sure adds volume... I like the blue dress :) I'm sure it would look great, V-shaped neckline is much more flattering than the frill of the first dress.

Just to add a guy's POV, I think that the peasant skirt is very attractive.
(rushing out quickly now)

Niamh: Too bad :( I hate it when I see a nice piece of clothing somewhere but am in a hurry or too tired to try it on, and then when I return later it's gone.

Mkhockenberry: The first one is definitely out for anyone with a big cup size - an extra frill on the top sure adds volume... I like the blue dress :) I'm sure it would look great, V-shaped neckline is much more flattering than the frill of the first dress.

about that top dress - how does anyone wear those big boobed or not? They look they'd just slide right down or else you'd be pulling it up all day. Clothes have to be functional as well. That's what bugs me about some of the things they sell.

I agree with you about that you don't want to spend all the time correcting your clothing, or you won't feel comfortable, and if you're not comfortable, you don't look good no matter how nice clothes you are wearing.

Strapless tops don't necessarily need any help staying in place, if the "neckline" is tight enough, because then breasts help keeping the garment up. Wearing a belt helps too. I have one self-made tube top, and I haven't had any problems staying inside it (haven't even had to wear a belt to keep it from sliding down) :p

I thought the same about the top one :) It's cute, but not for me. I'm less worried about accentuating things, and far more worried about indecent exposure

Shalot - I've never had issues keeping something strapless up, but anything with a defined "space" for your breast is sure to cause issues. I have the same problem with wrap dresses and even sleeved peasant tops.

The bottom two should work. I also like the belted t-shirt dresses that are so popular at the moment. I think I just like dresses in general for warm weather. I'm not much into shorts, so they're how I stay cool in 90 + degree weather.

I never fit into any clothes that have a certain shape either... For example buttoned blouses: If they fit on the waist, I can't button the top part because my chest simply won't fit in. If they fit on the chest, I look like I'm pregnant or something. Also if they fit on the waist, my shoulders probably look a bit hunched, because I have a too short midriff for most shirts and jackets! And a fitted dress that fits both at the top and the bottom is certain to have extra wrinkles on my waist because of said short midriff :p So a dress or a top that only fits right below the breasts is often the best solution for me. An empire style waist, I mean :)

 I keep wondering who it is that they make clothes for. My issue is always the breasts. I'm a 34 D, and they're high set as well. A normal V neck on something can be darn near obscene on me. Button down shirts are on my list of things to not even consider. I'll agree that the empire waist normally works best, but it certainly gets boring to wear. It is also a bit hard to find at the moment when the wrap look or crossed V in the front are so popular

Niamh - I'm dead set on it now, because that dress is really great. I'm going to go try the maxi, and hopefully the front isn't too low. I just wish they had more than blue. Normally I'll pick up 2-3 of something I like in different colors. I'm super picky about how things fit, so I tend to buy it in all the colors they offer :D

Well, if it makes you guys feel any better, those of us at the opposite end of the spectrum have problems too! Most clothes that fit the stomach and waist are too big around the chest. And it's very difficult to fit anything that's in any way gathered or shaped already. Know what I mean? Again, the winner is the empire waist, especially if it sort of flows out below, because it fits and emphasizes the chest without having to perfectly fit anywhere else.

Even worse than the top issue though is the bottom. I'm sort of disproportionate, so anything that fits my hips and thighs is way too big around my waist. Low-waisted pants are the only things that fit because they don't go up high enough to be too big for my waist.

Dresses like the ones you guys have put up ics of would make me look like I have no body haha

ick, she looks like the walking dead. That has to be totally unhealthy and I find nothing at all attractive about her body. It's disgusting looking.

I have the same problem, but backwards to most of you. I am more pear shaped now, so shirts or tops that fit me around the shoulders and breast won't button at the waist and hips. I gained way too much weight in the past 5 yrs. I do like the high waisted sundresses, because I can always layer over them a cute cardigan sweater or shirt unbuttoned and they hide my fat rolls. I like the one above with the ruffle on the breast. My upper body size is not large (in some things I can still wear a small) and so it adds a bit, which I can always use. They don't ever fall down on me; usually the elastic is pretty tight. Luckily at my age my shoulders and neck are still pretty smooth, so I can go strapless but I prefer the dress that Niamh posted with the tie for security. I have always thought halter dresses were very sexy and flatterin, too. They look good layered with a shirt or a jacket. I have very narrow shoulders so they help make my shoulders look a little broader.

I think it is interesting that we've all cited the same style as fitting and looking best, but there isn't more of that style out there. Why, if the raised (empire) waistline looks best on so many of us, do we not have more of those styles?

That's a good point. You might be right. Where I live (East Coast, USA) I have seen quite a number of highwaist dresses out. I saw many at the Target store the other day for summer. I am waiting for them to go onsale. Last year, I got quite a few of the longer ones on clearance. They are way too long for me so I plan on cutting them off knee length and I think I may have enough fabric to make a skirt from the bottom half. You can't beat that when I paid as little as 5.00 a dress. I just saw a Penny's folder and there were some high waisted dresses in there and some high waist tops. I hope they stay around a little while because my mid section has gotten unflattering. Forgot all those cute little knit tops with spandex in them for this year. I better walk and get back in shape.

I am a huge fan of the peasant skirt:

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/519X2T1JPEL._SS500_.jpg

I own three of them; one red, one green, one pink and white.

I love peasants skirts, too. This one is really pretty; nice to have all 3 colors. I used to wear them all the time. I need to lose wt!!! :cryin: I have a dozen of these skirts and I would losen the waists but not sure they will still look good with my added pounds. I won't give them away though. I like them because they are casual and yet can be dressy too....very versatile.

papaya, don't think about your new top looking like an Easter basket, although that is funny. Enjoy wearing it. I once was checking out of a store and the young woman waiting on me said her mother had a dress like I was buying and she called it her 'potato sack dress'. I thought - thanks a lot for telling me that. At anyrate, when I wore this linen dress, I got compliments. I took it in last year and now it doesn't fit me...figures...I should have left well enough alone.

Annamariah, Yes - they say you pay for quality; not that Timex watches are very expensive. However, my experience with them is that they do keep ticking no matter what you do to them. Usually the band wears out first, but it still tells perfect time.

mkhockenberry - I would prefer my curves as well to that model.

Eeeew, that picture is nasty. You can see her sternum.

I'm really lucky, my momma's really tiny and my dad's huge so I'm right in the middle. Medium height, medium waist, medium bust. It's boring, but convenient... everything fits me. I have this friend though that has the exact proportions as a pear. She's teeny tiny up to about her diaphram, then she balloons right out. She's almost perfectly round down to her knees, then her calves and feet are itty bitty. It's the strangest thing. I know another girl who's a twig, and 6'4". I have no idea how either of them find clothing.

Interestingly to me, I was talking to my husband about that picture. Keep in mind I'm the polar opposite of all the girls he's ever dated. I'm short all of 5'2'', curvy, and while I certainly don't consider myself fat I'm not skinny really either. He, and all the other guys I've ever asked, assure me that they really do prefer that. I'm 159 cm (5'2.3") tall and have a cupsize 70D (32D) - not a good combination in terms of fitting in to the clothes that are designed for people 15 cm taller than I am but who weight 10 kilograms less... And I'm not fat! Not skinny, but normal weight, my waist is narrow enough. As I've already said, it's hard to find tops that fit, and it's even harder to find decent jeans or other trousers. First of all, they are always too long, and I'm usually too lazy to shorten them myself... Secondly, if they fit on my thigs, they are too tight on my bottom, and if my bottom looks good in them, they are usually far too loose on the tighs. And I know lots of short, curvy girls and women like me, why can't they make clothes for us? :willy_nilly:

JuniperWoolf: Wow, so there is at least one among us who doesn't have difficulties in finding clothes that fit :D

Niamh: I also often wear a wide-ish belt with an empire waist, otherwise it often doesn't look as flattering. Because of my breasts the empire waist often rises a bit too high without a belt (obviously the tops I've bought have been designed for a flatter chest) and makes me look like I'm pregnant :p

Niamh
05-01-2010, 12:52 PM
Hey you and me are the same height! I so know how you feel! I've had the pregnant look too many times. try being short with 36D chest and not being exactly skinny. Currently size 12-14 but closer to the 14 than the 12. (not sure what that is in Euro size or American sizes.) I always have to buy bigger on top and it sometimes results in my looking... eh... bulky.

Annamariah
05-01-2010, 01:09 PM
I usually by my clothes from H&M, mostly size 36 (size 10 in GB, size 6 in the US), but for trousers I often need 38. When it comes to buttoned down blouses my waist fits in size 34, so I often buy those, as there's no hope I could button the shirt above the waist anyway until size 38 or 40, which would simply make me look shapeless. A simple tank top worn underneath the buttoned down blouse solves the problem :D (Though sometimes it would be nice to have a blouse you can button all the way up to the neck...) So it seems I come in several different sizes - one for my lower half, another for my waist and a third one for my chest :p

Niamh

I'd just button below the bust and wear a cami underneath. It adds shape and size to the bust area. :) Its a pain in the bum for me to get shirts for work that fit so i dont. I hate the tent like flow i end up with.

Where, oh where are these blazers with sleeves that are too long? I can't believe there is such a garment - I am longing for a Useful Blazer to see me through the summer but all the sleeves are two to three inches above my wrist. It was ever thus. It isn't even as if 5'10" is all that tall these days.

Clothes manufacturers have got the message about trousers - I can get trousers long enough these days but they don't seem to have cottoned on to the fact that if you have long legs you are quite likely to have long arms too.

Those pretty maxi dresses would come way above my ankles - the panel dress I still fancy is shown in the catalogue as a long dress on the models but previous purchases tell me it will come half way down my calves which I find a comfortable length.

Niamh

my local department store now caters suits for short and tall people. Its great! I can get suit jackets that fit! One of the clothes stores in town, A-Wear, has jeans that come in four lengths, 27", 29", 31" and 33". 29" is my leg. I've friends who are 27". It never made sense to me that for years the clothes were are all messured for average height of about 5'5" with leg size 31", especially seeing as in Ireland, I AM average height. We are a nation of shortys.

No problem here. Always right. As long as I go to H&M for blazers because size 36 in Europe is actually too big. It fits, but 34 is better. But that is only in H&M as they cater for teenagers too... 36 is normally the smallest in all other shops. Though the rest of my clothing is fine...

Although, I have a problem with the back of trousers in the waist area... Most people would complain too tight, but I have always a piece of fabric that is too much is seems... It's not that bad, but anyway, I have had it since I was a teenager. No matter how long my mother and I looked, there was just no pair of trousers that didn't have it. I guess I'll have to gain fat on my back? ;)

Oh, yes, I can actually moan about this: has anybody with small breasts also noticed that tops and dresses are always made for people with bigger ones and that you then have two bags under your armpits? This has really become a problem in Germany now... Women seem to be too 'breasty' and so, Hunkemöller for nighties, no-no. To H&M again. There they might know about teenagers whose breasts are not yet grown to their full size. Shame that I am my full size at a grand A :D.

Mind you, living in a country where the usual woman is at least size 38 is great! In the sales in shops like Pro Mod you get a big choice, better than in Belgium where I come from. And your shoes are equally cheap :D. Though there is nothin for me in Marks and Spencer... They starts at 38 :(. I am 'petite' so to say...

I find I can't wear anything button down for that reason Niamh. I've been having luck with some of the drapey tops that are popular at the moment. This one works great, my only complaint is that I must wear a tank top under it. the neck hole is huge and it is forever falling off my shoulder. It's simply not made for someone as all around tiny as me, and since I didn't buy in the petite section, the shirt isn't sized to accommodate my smaller frame. I like it enough, that I've been considering getting the other color of the same top I only have the puple/gray one at the moment, but I think I'll get the blue/green one as well:)

 That they do. Any department store has someone capable of helping you. The only problem that I find is the ones that fit properly for larger sizes are very expensive. I love to buy at Victoria's Secret, but at 50-60 dollars a bra, I can't afford to do it very often. They fit amazing, though, and they're like the Cadillac of bras.

The truth is that finding a right size is almost impossible. Okay, I know that in special underwear shops one could find bras with a perfect fit, but I can't afford to pay that much for a bra! In normal shops there just isn't enough sizes that have big enough cups and small enough circumference. Most of my bras are size 70C, and it is not the right size. 70D is better, but they are nearly impossible to find, and what I would really need would be a 65D or 65DD. I've NEVER found that size anywhere... (30D or 30DD) I also often find that the straps are too long even when on the shortest setting. That much I could fix myself, however, if I wasn't so damn lazy...

What is the 70 in the 70D size? Is that USA sizing or somewhere else?

There is only 1 store in town that sells my size and their best selection is in the "expensive" bra section.

As far as comfort goes, Wacoal is the best I've ever tried. There could be better, but I remember just being amazed the first time I tried one of those. Victoria's Secret doesn't hold a candle. Or at least it didn't. I can't even go to VS anymore. When I was younger, they had things I could wear, but I think that store cators to teens and young adults --- especially that PINK stuff they have. I'd feel really stupid walking around in a pair of sweatpants that said PINK on the butt of them.

T-SHIRT bras are a wardrobe staple in my opinion, but again, the size range on those is limited. The affordable T-Shirt Bra that comes in my size runs small and there is no buy a size up for me in that particular style. So, I spent $70 on the only other T-Shirt Bra they had - Le Mystery or something. It's awesome for comfort and is actually cute, rather than matronly which seems to be the most appropriate adjective for the majority of bras in my size and price range. If I want something functional and cute I will have to pay and pay and pay for it. More clothing size discrimination. :(

Shalot - T-shirt bra??? I'm not familiar with what that even looks like, and knowing me it is something I own  Maybe not if they're that expensive, but it wouldn't surprise me. I'll have to check out that brand. I'm pretty picky about buying bras, and I certainly hate being uncomfortable all day. I just want them to be pretty even if no one else seeing them.

I'm thinking 70D is UK sizing. 70 being centimeters around the rib cage?

Has anyone tried the backless bra? It's something like this

http://www.iheartluxe.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/maidenform-backless-bra.jpg

I've heard that it is fine for bustier girls, but I've never quite gotten up the nerve to try it on.

Annamariah

Yes, 70 is centimetres. I guess it's 32 in inches? They say you should not buy a bra if you can wear it on the tightest setting, which means that all my 70C or 70D bras are too large for me. But it is impossible to find a 65D anywhere!

T-shirt bra is one with smooth cups, no lace or seams so that it gives you a smooth silhoutte under a tight top.

I haven't seen that kind of backless bra. It looks like the straps might fall of your shoulders any moment causing a major underwear disaster... If you'll try one, tell me how it works :D

Niamh

70D is not UK size! Its European. :D I'd feel sorry for anyone if it was!

I actually own a strapless, backless bra. :D

It's also called a spare tire :wink5:

Thats what we call it here. and love handles. :D

You mean like Unique Bra that stays on with some gel or something?

http://piruetti.workspace6.smilehouse.com/filemanager/productpics/2311picture1Upload.jpg

I just can't believe it would give anywhere near enough support for my breasts, I mean where would it get that support?

Niamh

Annamariah
05-05-2010, 06:16 PM
A friend of mine has one too and she said it was really difficult to get on properly.

I guess it would works better with people with small breasts that don't need that much support. With a tight top they should give enough support and a smooth silhouette for women whose breasts aren't that big.

kiki1982
05-06-2010, 05:26 AM
Yup, I think the 70 in 70D or so gives you the centimetres measured just under you breasts. The D would then be the cup size.

But I think in France they measure on you niples (round your back of course), so their centimetres are a little bit more for eventually the same size. England measures in inches below the breast I thought.

Fortunately now there are these really handy all-over-Europe or the-world chains of shops like Hunkemöller where they have all possible sizes on their labels. Otherwise what a problem

Only ever tried a strapless bra and one with a plastic back that closed at the front (so there was no lock on your back for a tight top). The strapless one used to fall down, and I don't have that big a cup size (A), so for women with large breasts that have started to hang, no-no. The one with the plastic back was alright until it gets really hot and then your skin starts to get uncomfortable because it can't breathe under the plastic.

The only real thing that would help for support and that would be strapless would be a corset because it has other means of support, but then under a tight top... I think the men would rather like it... :p

The muffin top. You know what a Scottish comedienne once called it? 'Cake top', 'because it [was] slightly bigger than a muffin top'. I like it :D. Haven't really got one though.

Niamh
05-06-2010, 06:11 AM
In UK and Ireland its inches messured below bust line to determine the size (ie 36inches) and around the bust to determine the cup. (ie D)

Hello, everybody! Finally made it here! Hope you don't mind me jumping into the conversation.

Bras....I hate them! I usually do without, even though I risk getting National Geographic twins. The most comfortable bra I ever had was one that hooked in the front. My problem, though, is that my chest gets larger (the area below my breasts)--perhaps because I do work out--but my twins don't. And then the hooks often get ruined and pinch me! I only wear them when I go to school and when I do aerobics--I'm not big, but the jiggling is painful. I've been meaning to check out this store that helps you find the right bra just for you.

Then I get those little flaps of skin around that area. I'm glad I don't live in the witch hunting times. They used to burn people for having those. They thought those little flaps were extra nipples used to nurse familiars. I know there is such a thing as a third nipple--but they talked about nipples being found around the waist or underneath the breast...so I'm assuming they met these things. Imagine--being burned for something that is caused by chafing of tight fitting clothes!

Today I finally had the courage to go to a lingerie specialty shop. It's not like there was much selection either, but at least there were a few bras my size, whereas in other places there aren't any. I bought two basic balconette bras, black and beige, size 65E (that would be 30E. OMG, E cup. Not D, not DD, but E! :eek2:) No more bra muffin top for me! :p I got the cheapest bras in the shop, only 25 euros apiece. The pretty ones would have cost 80 euros... perhaps later when I feel rich :D

Niamh

30E? wait... as in uk size? you can get bras smaller than 32a? thats news to me!

Annamariah
05-06-2010, 06:18 PM
Yup, UK size 30E. Apparently they exist, but I've never seen anything size 65 (or 30) in normal shops unless it has been AA or A cup size, B at most. Which is really stupid, as there are lots of skinny women out there. I'm not skinny and 70 (or 32) is too large for me!

A yeah, swim suit season . I don't like it, and not because I am fat and I don't look like anything in a bikini, actually I am quite fit to be seen if I may say so myself :D, but because I absolutely ABHOR swimming, beaches and things like that. In fact, last time I bought a new bikini it was for a hen night and then I didn't go because I was not going to stuff myself in a bikini and go into a sauna. In fact, I can't remember when was the last time I went swimming actually... It must have been, let's have a look, 8 years ago. :)

I like peasant skirts too. Do provençal skirts also apply? I have a real one :).

Warning: the following is a serious question.

Alright, I'll be frank. I have a friend who keeps being beaten up by her boyfriend, and then she keeps going back to him. I know that the reason why she keeps going back is because she's lived with him for so long and really has nowhere else to go, but she insists that she "loves him" and blah blah blah. He won't even let her out of the house except to go to work (which is where I see her), and that means that she pretty much has no friends. Even I'm really more of an aquantance. I don't want to be mean to her, but after the third time that she's come to work with bruises on her face and a limp, I'm tired of comforting her. Should I be tough with her, or should I keep doing the whole "it'll be okay" routine?

Juniper, I know how you feel. In high school, one of my closest friends was dating a guy that smacked her around and completely controlled her life. It got to the point where she wouldn't even make eye contact with me in the halls anymore. One day a friend saw her bf push her down in the middle of the street, and still she denied that he was doing anything wrong to her. We tried several approaches with her, and nothing worked. The most difficult part is watching them go through this, and knowing that the only way they'll ever leave is if they finally realize they're being hurt for themselves.

Be honest with her- don't tell her it's going to be okay, because she needs to understand that he's not going to change. At the same time, tough love isn't a great option either because you run the risk that she'll cut you out of her life for "not supporting her". I always found that "you deserve better" is a good line. I'd advise not to keep putting him down, but build her up to help her see that she's worth more than how he treats her. She needs to see herself as deserving real love- and hopefully she'll see that that is not what she's getting.

Thanks C*C, I tried the "you could do better" approach, and it seemed to go over really well. I even pointed out some of the nicer regular customers that we get and told her about my boyfriend Dave, just so that she'd know that not all men are voilent douchebags. I'm going to keep hammering away at this tactic, I think I could get her to leave that guy and move back in with her mom in B.C., she's responding well to me and seems to have had enough.

Anywho, on a lighter note, I'm dying my hair a nice natural red next week. I'm going for a Nicole Kidman in Practical Magic kind of look:

That is a damn fine question. I think it's because women with curls try too hard. We brush and blow dry and flat iron and and put so much stuff in it that it doesn't know what to do with itself.

Woe, calamity and disaster - my favourite mail-order clothes supplier is going out of business. :bawling: I knew I should have bought that dress when I saw it back in the spring. However.... they have a 50% off Sale - so I have stocked up on my favourite trousers, a black pair and a navy pair - oh, alright, I bought some in the spring but where am I going to find such comfortable and properly fitting trousers again? And they had these lovely lightweight jacket/tops, just the job for travelling, light as air and crease resistant, so I bought a blue one. And a red one - BOGOF? But they didn't have any dresses that I liked in my size or I'd have been indulging in those as well.

I know right? What is it about shoes? .....and handbags?

I guess it has got something to do with the fact that it's much easier to find right size of shoes than clothes that fit, and with handbags it's even easier - the same one fits all women no matter what size they are.

Then again, I have never been one to shop handbags and rarely find a pair of shoes I really want to buy. Perhaps I'm not a real woman after all. All the Internet tests say I have a male brain :D

I finally found a maxi dress that is the right lengt for me (meaning that it's probably meant to come down to one's mid-calves). It's from H&M (like most of my clothes), it has dark blue striped print, each stripe being different print. It goes fine with the belt I bought with that last blue dress I posted a picture of :)

Oh, I find clothes no problem! However, now I am really getting thin: 34! I couldn't believe it (the scales had been in Belgium while I was in Germany for the last 2 years). I went to C&A and couldn't find trousers in my size for the summer. So, went to the children's department where even size 164 (my height in cm) was too big. I had to buy 158. So, a pair of long trousers for a child went to be knee-high for me :). Great pair though.

Oh, yes and I have a problem with finding dresses and tops in Germany since I have moved here. Women all seem to have big boobies in this place. The only really safe shop is H&M because they cater for teenagers with smaller ones than the average adult woman here... That said, though, fortunately there are now the multi-national places like ProMod. Imagine before... But it's great, because in the sales, I have choice by the truck-load!

Haha, Niamh, I really find that funny. It's kind of cute, buttercup yellow. I really hate, I do'nt know, nothing really. I suppose I hate anything that is unidentified. Red needs to be red, not a flimsy attempt. But I think everything is nice as long as it suits the person. That is the real problem I find.

I am really difficult with shoes. They should be comfortable, not too narrow, not too special, because they should be worn for other occasions as well or just every day, no too high-heeled, etc etc. I rarely buy shoes that I don't wear after, but therefore they should be of the right colour and style. I drive my hubby mad. Sandals too. They can be bling-bling, but only in one colour and comfy, nice-looking (no Roman sandals for me, because I look like an elephant).

Oh, yes, and everything should be cheap as well. I hate spending money like 100 euro or more on shoes. 50 is the most I will spend. Fortunately, Germany still has reasonable shoes.

Not very big, it's just a close-up shot. It's about an inch long and not heavy at all.

Fair enough, I kind of prefer going sans earrings on the daily. I know a lot of women are like that. Although there is always that friend who has the craziest tea pot/Halloween/Christmas/chandelier earrings and can pretty much always get away with them.

I almost never wear earrings (and never the dangling type)... Feel like I am carrying tons of weight.

So, I cleaned some soot with my vacuum and now it won't work :-/

Why're you doing the vacuuming? Leave that to the menfolk who also need to make me a sandwich! Rawr! Not.... I just finished steam cleaning the carpets... bleh.

Did you open it up and...erm... clean it out? What cleans a vacuum? Sorry I can't be more helpful.
