Hi girls!
I'm a little sad today.
Yesterday I saw that the cute, rustic bistro where my fiance and I had our first date has relocated to a major, impersonal, cold, mall foodcourt!
Imagine how upset I was, I called my fiance and told him! I had so hoped to return there again and again...*sigh* my only hope is that the next owner opens a similar establishment, cause I just love the spot...

i hate when things like that happen. One of my all time favourite places to drink tea, read and write was The Winding Stair Cafe that over looked the River liffey. It was a really cool two story cafe that was above a books store (with the same name) and the staircases walls were lined with pages from books and all the walls where floor to celling in old books. They did the best soup ever. Then it shut down and a few years later it was announced that it was reopening and i got excited and i dragged my friend Mel with me who also loved the place. When we got there we were so disapointed because the new owners had turned it into a trendy wine bistro. We walked right back out again.

Sprinks you are too young to put your back out! esopecailly if you are goiung to work in a library, ( everyone at work has devveloped job related back problems :eek2: ) the jkey not to bend when shelving but to crouch, or simply give in and sit on the floor! :D
Niamh
01-25-2009, 09:49 AM
You should crouch regardless. That means you are using your legs and not your back.
sprinks
01-25-2009, 09:54 AM
I have Hypermobile Joint Syndrome - I put everything out in seconds! I sit at the chiropractors and everytime I move I crack, and then I'm told "You're not meant to do that, it's my job!". Yes I've learnt to kneel at work if I know it'll be a bit of a job on the bottom shelves, and I do often end up sitting on the floor doing it :D. I do okay there, and it's actually helping me strengthen up. I did a year and a half or so after my knee ops of physio, and I really shouldn't have stopped, but I did. So doing my job at the library is actually a really good thing :D.
The job helps my confidence too, my condition will pretty much only get worse (my hips are starting to get a lot worse, they crack often now.) so I was worried I'd never be able to manage a real job, because it gets worse each generation and my mum is only in her 30s and is already classified as disabled because of the condition.

Humm no worries sprinksy keep up with libraries ( esp as as far as I can tell australia is the promised land and the frontier of public library invoation) its the twisting that generally is the danger ( oh and pushing and riding on heavy book trollies or spinning them round and round ans stopping them with one hand which ends uup with you being jerked right around, isnt too good for your back , fun yes good no!)
Im in the danger bracket for slipped discs and chronic back pain myself so Ive been thinking about doing some excersise to strengthen my back , also I really need to lose weight, any ideas aanyone?
sprinks
01-25-2009, 10:13 AM
Yeah I got warned about trolley dangers :p, and mostly I just have to watch my wrists, from pushing too many books at once.
Not really, I'd suggest going to a physiotherapist or the like for back strengthening things, because things like that are better off tailored to the individual because they can cause damage if you do ones unsuitable to yourself. I can't do much physical activity due to my HMS, so mostly I just do bike riding (exercise bike though :D), swimming (I had to do hydrotherapy anywho) and walking, mostly with the dog.
Nightshade

Banned from swimming for a year due to the ear :bawling: my mum is a physio but yeah.... cant ride a real bike, cant afford a gym and phobic of dogs :D

you do a lot of walking around anyway nightie. Have you thought of investing in an exercise ball? can get them for a fiver and they can be used to strengthen your back, tone up and correct posture. I use one. They are used in the alexander technique and Palates.
I noticed this week with the aniseed balls, that everytime i felt like a munch (which is when i usually raid my house) i sucked on one of them instead and i didnt eat as much crap! been great. so everytime you fancy a munch suck on an aniseed ball!!! :D

That reminds me a little of a girl I know who was trying to stop biting her nails last year, and so she carried around toothpicks to chew on instead. Which is fine and all, but it was so funny when she'd look at you and say "Would you like a toothpick?".
I'm pretty good at breaking habits if I want. All I have to do is one night think "I must stop biting my nails" and I don't do it again. But then they break and I bite them again. If they didn't break I'd be fine!
Speaking of which, I'm going to paint my nails green and yellow for Australia day :D. Well... maybe just green if I can't find yellow :p
Niamh
01-25-2009, 10:33 AM
Very Patriotic! Although i'd represent yellow more with Oz than green.
sprinks
01-25-2009, 10:36 AM
Yes but I only have fluoro green nailpolish! I'll have to hunt around and see if we have a yellow one. I know we have orange... Hmm... I'll find something :D
That's like how we get people all decked out in either blues and reds or green and golds, it gets all confusing because green and gold are what we recognize best, but our flag is blue, red and white, so stores stock a lot of things in those colours!

Sprinks you are too young to put your back out!
Not really, though. My brother was about 16 when he did it. I can remember when it happened. He was a paperboy. He was outside the house with a friend of his and they were going to deliver his papers together. He dropped one. He bent over to pick it up and that was it. He couldn't stand up. So he had quite a few visits to the chiropractor after that.

When I worked at the bookstore (10 years ago already :eek2:), I always sat on the floor. I even opted to lying down sometimes! I didn't care! :p

I have to agree with the exercise ball. I love mine! :D I do suggest pilates with or without the ball, though. I lost a lot of weight with that alone. I admit to having gained some back now. But that is mainly do to the fact that I haven't been doing any exercising. I've had to quit dance for the moment. I could practice at home, but, like with "regular" working out, I have just been too tired this past year to do much of anything. It seems that whenever I decide to start again, something happens to me physically that will prevent me from doing too much of anything that calls for any real effort from me (right now it is my arm). But I have my mind made up! I want to lose that weight that I have gained and maybe a little extra. So I need to do this religiously again. Some exercise routines call for a little everyday, or every other day. Whichever you would choose, just make sure you have that day or two to rest because that is essential with getting into shape, also.
Oh and another thing i'll add to this is eat slowly.
Yeah, I agree with this, too. But I also try to follow a diet plan. I admit that I don't necessarily watch what I eat as much as when I eat. I don't gorge myself, but if I want a piece of chocolate cake, I am going to have it! :D Anyway, when I lost that weight before (I admit that the way my schedule has been, I haven't been following the plan :(), this is what I did (I read it somewhere):
Breakfast (I generally only eat a bowl of cereal): within an hour of rising
Snack (I make it something light): 3 hours later
Lunch (again, I make it light - if I eat something big, I won't want to eat supper later): 3 hours after that
Supper (I eat whatever I want then): 5 hours later
Snack (again, light): an hour before bed
It worked for me (hopefully it will work again). I also followed my grandmother's doctor's advice that he gave her. Eat what you would normally eat, just cut the portion in half. So it all worked. It is just a matter of keeping up with it. :) Of course, I know everyone is different, but it DID work for me until I messed up! :(

I do walk miles everday, don't I. Excersise ball Ill think about Ive wanted to do pilates for agews but cant fins anywhere to do it. Last time I lost weight I did it by eating lots of smaller meals and cutting out the snacking, and if I got the munchies I did have aniseed balls and chewing gum. I also only ate with chopsticks which sloweed me down then but then I got so good with them I can eat just as fast with chopsticks as with western cutlery  :D

Yeah, for me, it is smaller meals (the cutting the portions in half). I don't eat snack food that much at all (for me, the "snacks" on the list might involve something like crackers or fruit or other "light" things). I eat it but not that much. But you mentioning gum chewing is kind of funny. I was addicted to gum chewing. I would chew gum ALL the time. I even would chew it at work, which was forbidden. But I was so good at hiding the gum that nobody knew I was chewing it. I always said that gum was my cigarette. I was terrible with it. But I think it helped with maintaining my weight. Unfortunately my jaw got so bad with TMJ that I had to go cold turkey with it. :( Too bad, really, because I knew it worked.
Chopsticks could be an option if I didn't have arthritis in my hand. But if I could hold them, I probably would get too good at it, too. ;) Another thing that I heard that someone did once was hold the spoon/fork with the opposite hand. I guess that if you do that, you eat slower automatically. But I would think that you would get used to that, too, eventually. Wouldn't you think so?
One thing about the exercise ball is that it is kind of odd the first time that you sit on it. Prepare yourself. I don't know how it was for Niamh, but I know how it was for me and other people I have seen. It is really just a balance thing. So you have to know that you will definitely be unstable at first. But now I can sit down like I am sitting in a chair. :)

sometimes Clinique products irritate me - they cost a lot and then they're not so great. Like the 3 step skin care set you can buy for like over $30 bucks? Lye soap works as well as that soap, the astringent BURNS my face and the lotion makes me break out. But my roommate in college swore by it. I do like the Clinique Bonuses though - you know where you buy a certain dollar amount of stuff and then you get a free make up bag and a lipstick usually, a brush set, a trial size cleanser or something. And there's usually some eyeshadow in shades that you will never ever wear. I have a collection of bonus eyeshadows upstairs
In fact I have a lot of makeup that I don't really use, but it's there with hte rest of my make-up and I just root past it every morning while I'm getting ready...I can't bring myself to throw it away until I've had it at least 2 years or so.

I totally have the same thing. First, I also love the bonuses. Second, I got more stuffs than I need for every day use. Some of them are from bonuses too, that's why they are like piling up. I'd love to give them away to my friends, but most of them have different skin type and skin shade. And you're also right, Clinique is costly and some products are not worth the money. Say, do you mix products or you just stick with one brand? I use Clinique moisturizer and powder, but I use Murad for sunscreen.
Papaya, perhaps you want to try Body Shop Vitamin E eye cream. I used it everyday for almost a year now and it really reduces fine lines around your eyes. Also, it really helps for puffy eyes. I have sensitive eyes myself and I have no issue using this product.

I love me some samples, last weekend I got a make over and ended up getting a some decent samples now the trick is to try to use them.

Totally not good. Yes, I have, it turned out it was slightly ripped on the inside. Sometimes, it's just a minute scab that's peeled away. But othertimes it can actually be a tear in the fistula. Go to your piercer and get it checked out.
Just to add to the Clinique discussion... I've never used it. I SWEAR by Vichy, which is even MORE expensive ($20 cleanser, $20 toner, and roughly $10 for the moisturiser), but it makes my face look absolutely perfect, and I have pretty terrible skin. :bawling:

Ack, really? That's what I was afraid of...It's my belly button piercing and it just started bleeding the other day so I took the ring out and cleaned everything but when I put the ring back in it didn't seem to go through properly and now it's kinda sore. Not bleeding at all, but I can't pull on it or move it around or anything like I could before. Does it matter that the piercing is over a year old?
p.s. ironically, the Piercer was Stigmata downtown haha

I used to break out from just everything. No matter how expensive.
So I took a course in cosmetology, learned about the ingredients and what they actually do to the skin and I began to make my own.
It was miraculous. And always fresh, chemical free and so nourishing and effective for me at least.
I was not impressed with what I found out about almost all products on the market, one company, well several actually used spermaceti, from whales! Whales, that staggered me. No thankyou. To kill a what for my face is a no no.

Haha may I ask why? I actually really liked them. The guy was really nice and the place was CLEAN. I don't get pierced very often (aka, only a hole in each ear and my belly button), so I doubt I'll be having anything done for a while (though I've considered my nose...), but if I do, I'll check out your guy!
Yeah, it's looking a lot better now. The skin is moving over it more easily and there's no soreness, so I'll just keep cleaning it. Thanks for the advice!!

OK. I admit to being naive about this. I seem to wake up with more and more gray hair everyday. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that I have such dark hair. The gray is very obvious because of this. It isn't even like my hair is gray. It is turning white. I was using this crayon that is meant to touch up roots. That really works well when there is a small amount to cover. Now it is getting harder to do that with because I have these incredibly long white strands that are popping up all the time.
Well, I don't know what to do about dyeing my hair. The only time that I ever did this sort of thing was years ago when I put blonde highlights in my hair. That was it. That was obviously choosing to make parts of my hair lighter and a different color than what it is. I don't want to do that. I love my hair color. I want to keep it this dark. I have nobody to ask about this because I don't know anyone that has dark hair.
So, here is my dilemma. If I could afford it, I would, of course, go to a salon to get it done. But at the moment, that is out of the question. So, I have to give in to the at-home dyes. I don't know what I should do to buy a dye that will keep my hair the same color. Now, say, for example, I wanted a "Golden Brown" color. Say it matched my hair exactly. But on the box it says that it is recommended for someone who has "Dark Brown" hair. Would it not look the same on me? Or, how on the box it will show how hair would look with this particular dye if your hair was both a shade of blonde or brown or even black. After all, it is making the other colors change and would be keeping mine the same. Now, I know anyone could use it. But here is my question. If the color of the dye is pretty much MY color, will it work? Will it basically give the appearance of a color similar to mine (if not exactly the same) or will it change the color of my hair? Basically, if I am hoping to use a dye that will match my exact color just to cover the grays, how much should I trust that the color will match mine, or should I assume that it will end up a different shade?
I hope that made sense. But I really don't know what to do with this. If anybody can help, thanks a lot!!
Niamh

Most hair dyes have a colour guide to compare how the colour will look against certain natural colours. you could hold a piece of your hair against the one closest to your natural colour and see what it will look like.
If you want to keep your hair to its natural colour, get a dye close enough to it.
LadyWentworth
03-12-2009, 06:10 PM
Yeah, I was wondering if it was close enough to my color, would it work and I guess you answered it for me. :) Thank you. :) Now, you just have to wish me luck that my hair will look the way that it does now and it won't turn out orange or something. I would be good for making some sort of mistake like that. :p
Sapphire
03-13-2009, 05:40 AM
On hair deying (I can't believe you would write it as dying as someone told me :eek2:!): I've always deyed my hair myself, but never tried to come near my natural colour. I just plunge some "everlasting" red on it, to find out it only holds for 2 weeks or such  The colour changes after that period of time are interesting :p I guess that is the chance you take when you buy the cheapest in store ...
I hope it works out for you. If your hair is dark brown and you put something dark brown on it, I think the worst that can happen is that it is slightly different than your natural colour. Something would really be amiss if it turned orange ...

Sounds like a great diet :p
It's 2 weeks until my Year 12 Ball, and I was hoping to get rid of some weight before it, and today I weighed myself for the first time in months, and the result wasn't too bad! I was generally around 72-73 kg before, but today I was a little over 71 kg. It's been my aim to get to 65 kg for YEARS now, so it's actually looking like it might be possible!! (After my ops when I was 14 I got to about 80kg, I never want to go there again, not at this age especially.) So if I can get to 70 kg for the ball, I don't care if it doesn't show, 'cause I'll be happy and confident knowing it!
And I have a hair appointment tomorrow, just a quick trim and layering. I'm hoping to get it re-dyed as well, luckily my mum can do that type of thing :). I think I might go dark again for the ball, but then afterwards get it cut shorter and perhaps go back to blonde?
I hope your hair turns out good LW! :)

It's the Australian equivalent of a prom, yeah. We graduate in November. We also have a kind of Year 10 formal, because (back in the day) people could drop out in Year 10 if they so wished (things have changed). So they'd do a "formal" as a kind of ball opportunity for those people, only it was never as big as the ball. We had a Year 10 formal, but the school didn't like it, because they didn't want to encourage to people to think that way, like "Oh I've had a ball type thing, I can get a job and leave school now".

Did you girls know that apparently (and on average), women walk 51 years on heels. Ok, that is not put correctly: from age 12 to age 12 + 51 = 63 women can walk on heels. (http://news.softpedia.com/news/Women-s-Obsession-with-Heels-Lasts-More-than-50-Years-104907.shtml)
Before I read about that research, it never occured to me that there might be a day when I would not be able to walk on heels any more  The thought just never crossed my mind, though it is quite obvious...
I did not start wearing heels untill age 19 or such. I like it and think they can be comfortable: from a principle, I do not wear shoes I can not run on. I would never catch a train if I would do so :D Thus no stilhettos (until now), but 10cm is possible.
I can however imagine that people dislike heels. Every one should follow their own taste.
Enjoy the party to the fullest Sprinks - and when your feet tell you they are done with the heels, just kick them off and keep dancing ;) You can worry about getting them back the next day :)

I like heels but mostly wear them in the evening because during day time there is too much running around. Having said that, in my 20s I used to wear them more often because my job required me "dressing up" and being tip top shape at all times.
Heels sometimes do show an outfit, though.
Annamariah
03-18-2009, 12:13 PM
I wear heels relatively seldom, especially as for the last two years I've had to walk or bicycle to school, and that wouldn't work in high heels :P Even regular flat shoes can be really uncomfortable to walk in for long distances, so I have a pair of really expensive shoes which were literally made for walking. They're really comfortable and frankly the best shoes I've ever had.
I do like heels, though, in parties and other special occasions. I don't own many pairs, but I like those I have. Maybe if I'll get a nice indoor-job somewhere sometime (and don't have to walk several kilometres to get there) I'll start wearing heels more often.
And on Friday I'll have a chance to really dress up, unless the party is cancelled... I should find out today. But it would be really nice to have a chance to wear my best dress I made for my "vanhojen tanssit" ("the dance of the old" - it's the ball for people in their second year of upper secondary school when the oldest class leaves the school to study independently for their matriculation examinations. They second-year-students celebrate becoming the oldest students of the school) I haven't had a chance to wear it ever since, and as the sewing took so much work, it would be a pity if I never got to wear the dress again.

I do wonder though: is this a party for both the oldest class and the second class, or do they celebrate seperate or do the oldest leave to another party place or... Well, I just wonder how it works :)
No, the party is just for the second-year class. First they have a course in which they practise dances like Polonaise, Pas d'Espagne, Tango, Salty Dog Rag, Virginia Reel, Cicapo, Gay Gordons and Viennese Waltz. The actual ball is in the evening and the families and maybe friends of the students watch them performing these dances. The next they they perform the dances again, this time at school so that the younger students get to see them.
The dresses are formal - boys wear tail-coats or tuxedos and girls wear long evening gowns, nowadays often quite modern, but sometimes also old-fashioned ones (which used to be more common earlier).
These photos are from my old school, though two years after the ball I danced in :) The first picture is from Virginia reel, the second one looks like Pas d'Espagne, and the third is Cicapo.

The oldest students leaving the school have their own party called "penkkarit", which is nothing as formal and fancy as the second-year-ball :D I can tell more about it in another post, if anyone's interested.

Ah, I love formality!
Welcome to Finland then  It really was a great day, I looked forward to it for YEARS and I had my dress designed before I even finished comprehensive school :D And the dance course was great fun, too. Three times a week 75 minutes of practising all those formal dances, I loved it.

First, thank you for those pictures and explaining it. :) We did not have a formal party either in our last year of high school, we did have much fun at our examination party though - but it was more like a "normal" party. We just went to a bar with a dance floor :p
Secondly, in high school I would have hated to learn those formal dances (not a great fan of rules ...) - but I do regret sometimes that I am not able to dance properly
Sprinks, as I have never had false nails I have no idea how it feels - I can imagine it is quite awkward though. Try not to break them ;)
Remarkable, you do make me wonder what character :)

I did get a chance to wear my fancy dress yesterday :D I went to this "Finnish Border Guard 90 years" party with my father, who works in the Coast Guard. I worked there in the headquartes too last summer, so I knew some of the people there and had more fun than my mother would have had if she went with my father instead (which she didn't want to do, so I got to go :))
Too bad the photos my mother took before we left look quite horrible  But if I can get any of them to look at least tolerable (I have to at least remove some red eyes, I look pretty scary), I might post it here :)

Annamariah, I had to do this with the eyes just recently; take out the 'red eye'; hope your program is better than mine. I had taken these photos of my grand-daughter who was 9 months old and just crawling. The thing is my son had given me this camera he no longer wanted and I used it for most. When I viewed them my little Brooke looked like an alien. Now my friend, Lily Adams, would like that, hehaha; but really it was quite scary. I reminded me of "Rosemary's Baby" at the end. Needless to say only a few good ones came out ok with that camera. I hope you can correct yours better than I was able to do mine. I would love to see your lovely dress. I bet you looked beautiful. The party sounds like great fun; so nice of your father taking you. I think my son will be this way with his daughter someday. That is really sweet and will be such a wonderful memory for you in the future.
why is is that every time I buy a pair of dress shoes they feel so comfortable when I try them on in the store but when I have to really walk around in them they kill my feet!!!
That has always been the same problem I have had, pussnboots. Let me ask you, do you think they shrink when you put them into your closet?
Heels are murder when you get older. I used to wear them when I was younger and then I made this bad mistake, buying a pair of black dress boots with slightly taller heels, than I had gotten used to in my later years. Ok, so about 3 or 4 yrs back, I went Christmas shopping in them - wrong thing to do! I was at one big mall store, but decided I had to venture into the mall to pick up a gift certificate for my daughter-in-law. I went the wrong direction, then met up with a friend and her daughter and they directed me to the other end of the mall. By the time I walked that distance and back to the anchor store, then to my car, I was nearly a cripple. Needless to say, I was in dire pain the next day and for weeks after. I had a less than perfect holiday that year due to my fashionable boots. I had bad sciatica running down one leg; very painful. In Jan and Feb, I had to go to physical therapy for 6 weeks; let's just say I haven't worn heels since. I may wear a little elevation, but not much. I am terrified of a relapse. It is ashame, because my boots are quite fashionable; they are not stiletto style, but I should have realized they were not for holiday shopping. So, beware all those who wear high heels. They might make your legs look great, but eventually the height will catch up with you and it is not worth the pain in the long run or the damage to your back.

Poor Janine! The things women do for nice shoes..
I pretty much only wear ballet flats, and heels when I'm going out, which are the two worst possible shoe choices for my crappy knees.
This year I bought new winter boots. I decided that a wedge heel would be perfectly appropriate for walking across campus in the snow. They're tall, black suede with a wedge heel, and I love them, and I paid too much for them. Sad note: the zipper on one of them broke yesterday :bawling:

I am with her; wish I could move there; obviously, your country has a sense of style which is classic and lovely nowdays. I love formality, as well. I wondered what happened to that idea here in the USA. My prom was quite nice with gowns and we decorated the hall beautifully with a theme, very romantic; but we did no formal dancing like this. This is very beautiful indeed. It is like a big entertainment. Everyone must take formal dance lessons there. Am I correct?

Now my feet are in worse shape than the time I had the painful leg; I have this painful bone-spur now. I will definitely have to have it operated on soon. It seems only flip-flops are tolerable at this point and if I walk all day in some clogs I own, I am ok while I am wearing them, but literally I can hardly walk (I limp) when I take them off...strange...yes, bring on the sympathy....poor, poor pitifully painful Janine.:bawling: Actually, the sciatica attack was coming from my lower back; the cause of the sciatica was some 'old age' *winching* arthritis that got worse by walking in those silly heels; mine were kind of tall and wedgy, too. I love those boots; darn! :( Sorry about yours, *Classic*...how disappointing. Can you take them back or can you get them repaired at a shoe-maker/repair shop? We used to have one not far from my house and I understand it moved. I should go there myself to have some shoes resoled. I heard on TV this is the trend now; with the recession and funds tight, people are going for shoe and boot repair. I would think they could install a new zipper. Maybe the zipper saved you from leg injury, *Classic*. ;)
My sciatica is pretty good now, but I have to sleep with my left leg propped up on a small pillow and my knee on another small one, which is comfortable but a bit of an annoyance. I have those ballet type shoes, too. I think they are cute and they are basically comfortable. I am down to about one pair, that does not rub my bone-spur. I guess that minor operation is in order soon like I said. eek. I have been putting it off. I guess I might be able to wear my tall boots if I wear them to some place I know I will walk very little and sit mostly. *Classic*, do you have painful knees? You're too young for ailments.

You poor thing! You just can't catch a break, can you? For all the crap you've weathered Janine, I can't even begin to fathom the good things that must be coming your way!
Somehow I doubt the break saved me from injury. I wore them through the heavy snow this winter with no problems. I'm sure my grandmother will be able to put a new zipper in. She is a seamstress after all and has done work on suede riding equipment for me in the past.
I ended up wearing my favourite flats instead, so of course I slipped in the mud and got them all disgusting:(. Yesterday was a charming day
Yes, Janine I do have painful knees (not at the moment though!). I have patella-femoral syndrome, which basically means that my quad muscles aren't strong enough to support all the weight and pressure on my knees, so they get sore. I also have arthritis running in my family (my mother limps when it rains, and my older brother has his knees operated on when he was 20) which has already started taking effect (they get swollen when it rains or there are drastic changes in the weather). Riding horses doesn't really help the situation either...

Hmm... reading the above I think I might start listening to my mother. She is telling me I should by decent shoes or will destroy my back/knees. Somehow I never thought she could be serious :( I guess I am still in the "no way a parent can be right" phase
Sorry to hear about your boots-experience Janine. I hope an operation will not be too much of a bother and help you walk again.
And *Classic*Charm* - I hope your grandma can fix the boots. They sound comfy :)

So much pain being mentioned lately! :( I hope all you lovely ladies start feeling good soon!
A part of my joint condition means bad knee problems, I had 2 lateral retinacular releases because of patella-femoral problems. My physio would always tell me about how the pain I feel in my knees just from walking is equivalent to what a marathon runner feels after a long marathon, or a football player after a long, hard game. I used to have to have acupuncture after the ops just for my knees, trying to get the outside muscles to loosen up. (When I first started physio when I was 13, the inside muscles of my knees would have been dead and useless in a few weeks, I got in just in time!). So although I don't know your exact pain, I sympathise! *hugs for you all* :)
you're not allowed to have fake nails at school Sprinks? How come?
We're not allowed false nails, unnatural hair colours (and when it is a natural hair colour you can only have one colour, with few highlights), we can't wear our hair down or have a long fringe, any hair clips must be the colour of our hair, we can't have overly braided hair (plaits are fine, braids aren't.), we can't wear any jewelry other than one pair of plain sleepers or studs or a plain chain with a cross on it or a watch, we're actually meant to have height restrictions on our heels on our shoes (which are to be black lace-up shoes only), we can't wear makeup of any sort apart from clear lip gloss/balm, and we can have clear nailpolish and that is it.
They like to crush and stifle our creativity :).
I go to a private school, ergo massive reputation to uphold. In winter we are always to be wearing our blazer to and from school, and if a student is caught at the shops or anything, after school, with their shirt out, tie undone, anything like that, they are given detention. However there is one school that actually does have punishments for students that wear their socks too low.

The dance course is optional, but most of the students take it. In my year only two girls missed the whole event (and one of them because she broke her leg), and only one of the boys. Actually many boys take the course two times, because there's usually more girls than boys in upper secondary schools, so girls ask younger boys to be their partners. In our year there were three times as much girls as there were boys, so we had almost all the boys from the first year dancing, as well as some of the older boys and a few guys from comprehensive school, a couple of boyfriends from other schools and even a teacher or two dancing with the girls who didn't get a partner from our own year. Some girls also danced with other girls, and some girls sat out a dance or two so that the rest could borrow their partners :D

How is that even possible? Not the hating grocery shopping part, but the shopping just once or twice a month part... I go to grocery shop twice a week, because milk doesn't stay good for longer than a few days, and it's not exactly something you can put in the freezer like you can do with bread. I don't enjoy grocery shopping either, mostly because I hate carrying all the heavy food back home and all the time I can only imagine "ah, again another five kilograms that are just going to get stuck on my waist for ever"

There are times when I go grocery shopping 2 - 3 times a week because not all the stores have the same items on sale each week. I usually stock up on chicken and fish and then just get the essentials each week if I am running low.

I go once a week, on the weekend, and run to the store once in the middle of the week for milk.

 I was talking entirely about myself.
Picture it: sometime last fall I was in a department store. I turned a corner and there it was: the best purse in the whole wide world.:D I loved this purse, I didn't buy it because it was a little pricey. Then about a week later the department store was having a sale - 30% off all purses!!!:eek: Soooooo I went to pick up my new purse and they were out of the color and style I wanted. I went to the other department store across town and they were out also.:bawling:
At work we have this annual shutdown which requires long hours and is generally pretty stressful. Anyways one sunday while at work I was surfing the net and I found the purse on sale so of course since I shop (and eat) when stressed I ordered it. I got it a few days later but didn't get a chance to play with it until last week (really long hours). I've been carrying it around for about a week and I love it!!:D However, it's purple patent leather and could very easily look like a hooker would own it.

Papayahed, I love purple and purses in purple are great....patent leather would be even more fun. I was just looking through spring folders and saw every color imaginable. I love having various colors. My sister is a 'purple freak' too, and loves to buy purple colored purses and shoes. Hey, I don't think they look like a hooker purse at all. All colors this year seem to be in-style. Enjoy that purse!!! :D So glad you found it and could buy it.:thumbs_up Why of course, don't we all shop off our stress?

In my opinion, all the purses they're selling right now look like hooker purses. It's this eighties fashion resurgence. I saw purple, pink and flourescent yellow acid washed jeans in the stores recently. I'm also seeing girls in leggings and high heels and those boots that are scrunchie...
I'm sure the younger people are reading this and thinking that I'm such an old lady, but to me, these fashions are just regurgitated 80's. Oh, and gold lame leggings...(there's supposed to be an accent on that e in lame but I can't figure out how to do it).
I miss the 90's. I'm a 90's girl all the way.
Oh, and I saw a purse I wanted yesterday. It was $98 so I didn't buy it. But it was Fossil brand so that explains why it was so expensive. It was this canvas messenger bag type purse that with green and pink and yellow designs on it. I wanted it, but I can't spend $98 on purse right now.

I love making my own purses. I have a gold card from my favorite fabric place. So I look for rich rich fabrics from the bin where there are only little amounts left, or from the back where the other season stuff is and is really reduced in price. Only if I definitely fall in love with something current will I pull out the cash.
I like to work a long time on one, first draw it out and then start. That way I can make it out of season along with the coat and such I want for the next year and it is fun. I search forever for just the right beads or whatever or do needlepoint. I love searching on google for clothes and accessories of the Victorian era or medieval and go from there.
At any rate I know I have one of a kind stuff and it kind of fills that need to be creative.
Papaya, every time I see your name I just have to have some kind of melon later. Must, just must.

you can honestly Shalot, I love that name, I totally sucked when I started. But then I just did it by hand while sitting watching teli or whatever when I had a spare moment. The stitches just get better and you find yourself getting really skilled. Oh and you know what is fun as well- go to a thrift shop, a good one with nice clothes at rock bottom prices and find a dress way too big that has gorgeous totally fabulous material that you love in just the right color. Then you take it home , rip it apart with your little seam ripper and place a new pattern you love on it and cut it out. You end up with a dream of a dress or pants or whatever at about one fiftieth what you would pay for it and no one would ever guess.
I grew up rich, left home , and was poor poor poor. But I never lost my taste for nice things even if they were totally off the wall like during my psuedo goth period. And the sitting and creating has helped my nerves a lot. I got some horrifying virus back a while and nearly died. Just like that, one day I was fine, the next thing I remember it was a month later. Needless to say I nearly had to learn to live over and it left me with really freaked out nerves. So this, besides a lot of excercise helps.
Has anyone ever made their own makeup and creams? I was against using animals and such for cosmetics so took a course and learned and was appalled at what is in the usual makeup and creams, etc. So I started my own line and kept them in the fridge since I didnt' use anything to preserve. Little batches at a time.
And wow did I save money and see my skin improve like ninety per cent.
So that is another little adventure I went on. I am just curious I guess.

And ough, that virus sounds like a horror movie! Any idea how you got it? Glad you found a way to get you through (besides the necessary medical attention I presume).
For the make up: is there any information about that online, or a book you could recommend? I think it's a wonderful idea, though I do not like cooking (= not great with recipes) and would like things to work out wonderful the first time I try. I do not know of any courses like that in my area... None payable at least :brickwall:

Homemade Moisturizer - Make your own moisturizer at home
Here are few recipes for making Homemade Moisturizer
If your skin is extremely dry and super-sensitive , here's how to make your own moisturizer:
Mix 1 cup liquid oil, such as avocado almond, with 1/2 cup beeswax.
Place over low heat until the beeswax melts, remove from the heat, and whisk until cool.
Add the content of three capsules of Vitamins E and a few drops of pure essential oil for aroma (lavender, sandalwood, rose, whatever you fancy), pour into a sterile jar, and store in a dark cool place.
Homemade moisturizer for normal skin.
Take a rose water get 1 cup of water and 1/2 cup of fresh rose petals and in a saucepan heat the water and rose petals just until boiling. then cool it and strain out the petals and add glycerin and aloe vera juice. store this in the refrigerator, now your homemade moisturizer is ready to use.
Jojoba homemade moisturizer for normal skin
Ingredients in jojoba homemade moisturizer
6 tablespoons jojoba oil
1 tablespoon vitamin E oil
2 tablespoons grated beeswax
1 tablespoon pure Aloe Vera
2 tablespoons rose water
8 drops sandalwood essential oil, & 4 drops rose essential oil.
Preparation of jojoba homemade moisturizer for normal skin
Combine jojoba oil, vitamin E oil and beeswax in a small bowl.
Place bowl in a shallow pan of boiling water and heat, stirring occasionally until the wax melts. Remove the bowl and let cool to room temperature. It will thicken and become cloudy as it cools.
In a blender or small food processor combine Aloe Vera and rose water. Add the cooled oil and blend on high until it becomes thick and cloudy.
Add sandalwood and rose essential oils and blend mixture into colored glass jar.
Apply a very small amount to your face every evening instead of your usual moisturizer. If you have very dry skin you may wish to use this also in the morning.
Homemade Moisturizer for Oily, acne-prone skin

About my illness,
It was a terrible thing, I still tremble to think of it, and perhaps what I share can protect you.
We were in unseasonable weather, so that a lot of wet and damp began to creep into the house. This was at the end of summer and who bothers with the heat , right?
Well some sort of mould, but not the horrific black mold, just some microscopic stuff gathered here and there. I cleaned it right up but then we all started feeling wierd.
Then a virus hit our city and people started falling by the wayside. Every business has someone ill and the clinics were swamped.
So we should have at that point left and turned the heat way up and that would have done the trick. The dry plus the bleach solution we used would have more than done the trick. but that costs a lot of money. We did stay away a week, but that was not enough and we did not turn the heat way up.
So in addition to catching the scarey virus that was going about, from the China area it was surmised, someone from there carried the virus via plane, and I began to feel rather ill.
But since I dont' have a history of being really ill, I did the usual and carried on.
My family started worrying about me , they could see what I could not. They were terribly ill, but I nursed them through it, and they were fine. I actually went to doctor and was put on antibiotics and seemd to be a little better.
Then about a week after I finished I suddenly collapsed, could not breathe or walk or anything. I remember having waves of fear wash over me, not for me really, but my family needs me still. And so I went over my will, I have had it since a very young mother. And then I prayed fervently and a little after I felt a prompting to look up acid alkalai balance. I could see I was very acidic and illness breeds in that climate of the body like wildfire. So I went very alkaline and miraculously I started to heal most dramatically. I was weak for quite a while but I took one day at a time.
Now I am careful to keep my body sixty per cent alkaline and fourty per cent acid. And I am feeling stronger now. Thank you for asking.
Oh and remember ladies, if melting beeswax you MUST use a double boiler or make one up with two pots. My girlfriend got badly burned by a beeswax incident. And never ever subsitute paraffin, it is deadly horrible to skin.
Also, dont make up large batches unless you are sharing with a bunch of friends, you can all contribute money. And keep it in the fridge. But oh the richness, the wonder of it on your skin. apply , wait thirty seconds and press a tissue lightly against your skin to absorb extra lotion.
If you like, only use it at night and in the morning just put on sunscreen and makeup. You will look so dewey and youthful.
I used to do facials for ladies of advanced age and who were really wrinkly. In days their skin began to improve so dramatically people commented and they felt so good. Remember, deep massage is what strengthens the skin tissue and it eventually binds better to the underlayers and the result is firmer less wrinkled skin. Although I have no wrinkles I noticed a couple on my hands from all that dishwashing and it worked.

Maybe because they make us ourselves feel good? While with good boys you sometimes feel you yourself are being the cause of all trouble... OK, that sounds very egocentric :eek2:
It all depends on the definition of "bad boy" ;) Sometimes the bad attitude is really too much, and I would take a good boy over it any day :)

I'm gonna quote Anne Shirley from Mongomery's 'Anne of Green Gables'
In her discussion with Marilla Cuthbert about Diana Barry's betrothal to Fred Wright, Anne said
"Roly poly Fred Wright?!"
Marilla:"What's wrong with Fred Wright?"
Anne: "Well, nothing. He's just so...GOOD"
Marilla: "Would you want to marry a wicked man?"
Anne: "No. I think I would like it if he could be wicked, but wouldn't"
I think that, in a nutshell, that's most of us ladies.
We like that a guy [I]could[I] be naughty, and perhaps even be a little naughty with us, but not too much...like not bad enough to get in trouble with the law..lol

Girls, why are we cling to the bad boys? Why good ones seem boring...Not here... I like goody-two shoe types (hence my preference of Superman over Batman ;)).
However, I have friends who always end up with guys we could describe as "no good". After many times watching the same thing over and over again, I think it is more to do with the self-confidence level of the girl. I am aware that it is a very superficial remark (a little paperback psychology? ;)) but more confident women usually are more demanding and expectant when it comes to relationships.

bad boys have a certain appeal, but I don't enjoy getting treated like crap. A pseudo-bad boy would be good - someone with a wild side and a sensitive side. Too much sensitivity is also a turn off. I guess it depends on how you define "bad."

Girls, why are we cling to the bad boys? Why good ones seem boring...
Sometimes the good boys can have too much of the feminine in them. They can seem too much like girls.
Good boys can also smother a woman in a relationship. I don't want to be treated badly, so while I can find the bad boys attractive, I married one that more good than bad, but I do need time to myself. Down time from the relationship. Just a few hours a day or a day or two now and then. I don't like constant attention and gifts, or even daily "I love yous." I know he loves me. If he tells me ten times a day, it'd be like he's trying to convince himself.

Good for you! :thumbs_up I have to say though: guys that open doors for me or pull out chairs... they give me the creeps  There is just something in me which makes me wanna run towards the door and get there first, or wonder whether he might draw that chair away from me the moment I try to sit down... Not sure, but for some reason I like to have control over those things myself  I also feel kinda awkward that they are doing such for me and not me for them...
And yes, not too much "I love you" please! My heart will stop every time it is said so unless the guy wants to kill me he should really be careful :p Not sure whether that is a good guy or bad guy thing though - bad guys can be pretty slick with words... And yes, not too much "I love you" please! My heart will stop every time it is said so unless the guy wants to kill me he should really be careful :p :D
I don't have any rules about expressing feelings... Sometimes hearing it makes one feel good and even 10 times a day does not feel enough. Or, if one feels it, why not say it (or if one does not feel it, why feel obliged to say it?)? I usually prefer to be guided by my mood and feelings rather than sticking by so-called rules.

I know now, Virgil, but I've no idea why. You seem pleasant enough to me.
Scheherazade, I don't think good boys are necessarily sissies or mama's boys.
We all have some masculine and feminine in us - animus and anima, and it seems the feminine is prized in both sexes. Men generally (not always) go for the very feminine women. A lot of women love the men who'll take care of the kids, cook, do the laundry, aren't mama's boys, but are nurturing in a way society usually ascribes to females. (Macho men are not nurturing at all, I don't think.)
But sometimes, I think the good guys just seem too much like the girls. Too nurturing can be a turn off to some women. I really don't want a guy buying me flowers every Friday or telling me he loves me ten times a day or cooking my dinner every single night. That makes me feel smothered. I need some space - at times.
I guess I like a basically good boy, with a dash of bad boy in him.
Sapphire
04-18-2009, 06:06 AM
The problem is always in the definition: are good guys sizzies and bad guys brutes? Then I would say "neither", thank you. But that's not all there is to it.
I googled "define: bad boy" and got (besides many songs ;) ) this description
The bad boy, cad or bounder is a male who behaves badly, especially towards women. Being a promiscuous rogue may be as successful a reproductive strategy as being a reliable provider. Women are especially attracted to such bad boys when they are ovulating. According to an article in The Independent, there is a "dark triad" consisting of narcissism, thrill-seeking, and deceitfulness.
The attraction of beautiful women to the "bad boy" archetype is attributed both to his confidence, intriguing mystery, seeming indifference (suggesting an abundance of sexual options) and unavailability, which challenge them to chase him. This contrasts with supplicating men who seem needy and desperate to please, suggesting lower value, and so are less attractive.
The bad boy is a common archetype in romance novels. Erm... that's not really putting the bad boy in a good light, is it?! I do wonder though, why is there an "article" (or some sentences) about "bad boys" but not about "good boys"? :p
Oh, and Scheherazade - you are quite right in saying there should not be rules to follow. :D That is what makes love so exciting, but also quite confusing most of the time ;)

I know now, Virgil, but I've no idea why. You seem pleasant enough to me.
That's precisely why he's dangerous.Gotta' watch these ones!

Thankyou both.
Sapphire, a good thing to do is just boil the water on the stove, remove and put another pot on top and then grate the beeswax. It will still m elt but it won't be on the stove. I too am a clutz sometimes, honestly I don't even know how I do it, but so far I have never hurt myself. :) The cool thing about making your own stuff is you can customize it and see what it does for your skin with little money outlaid.
And you know you can make a nice batch of skin cream without the beeswax at all, it is not imperative to have it. Just make sure you put your stuff in a clearly marked bottle or jar and put into the fridge.
Speaking about clutzyness, I just read this very morning that actor Bill Murray was so terrible yesterday on the golf course that one of his balls he hit sailed across the street and hit a woman sitting in her own yard. how embarrassing, right?
Do any of you have an absolute favorite food or foods that are comforting to you , good times and bad and you just love, love , love?
I am not the grab a chocolate or icecream person, you will laugh when I tell you.
I have no idea why I do this unless it is from all the years of my family members owning restaurants, but if I have the time and am stressed I make chicken, stuffing, yes stuffing, creamy mashed potatoes and salad with homemade dressing. I eat it slowly and have obvious ten million pounds left over for eighty more stressful days. I think it reminds me of my childhood and the special days when we ate that stuff. It is totally time consuming but it is what I do.And then all that washing up. sigh. Why could not I just eat a pizza or a bag of chips which I love? who knows. :)

Thanks for explaining again :) Sounds like you've got quite some experience with cooking - I always try to stay away from that as far as I can  So, needless to say that my comfort food would be pizza ;) My favourite food over all would also be pizza (with salami, cheese and pine apple) any ways, so why not use it as comfort food? :D
Fruit is also grand - you can really put your teeth in an apple and chew full of anger :D

I never thought about the apple thing, how true, I will try it. I usually make bread and knead and knead and knead to punch out the anger and pain. It is great therapy and the bread is oh so light.
What sort of books comfort you, you know the only ones you find you could read a hundred times and never get tired of them?

For me, it's the light stuff, but still well written, like the Alexander McCall Smith Mma Ramotswe series (not so fond of Isabel Dalhousie), the Agatha Christie Miss Marples, even an occasional Inspector Lynley mystery by Elizabeth George. Also Jane Austen because things always work out in those. They are comforting.

lovely, I too like some of those. On a rainy day, snuggled up in something warm and blankety and with a hot cup of wonderful tea I love to read them again, and again and I just sail back to other times that were precious and it is most comforting.

So you're a girl are you , hmmmmmmmmmm, I know how to tell. what is your favorite scent and color of nail and toe polish. And what do you really think of guys.? ;)
Everything is new really.
I love love love this thread, because I don't have to apologize for being very feminine or having feelings like a woman. It is a sanctuary, a tiny internet sanctuary, but one all the same.
When any of you think about the ultimate feminine outfit to wear to a posh dinner, and I do mean posh, what does it look like, and hair and makeup as well.
So for summer what would it look like, or spring or autumn or winter.
I love to visualize that sort of thing, it is so very enjoyable to me when I am taking a break from work or whatever.
Oh, and .............a very sincere welcome Master Chef.

Welcome indeed :D What about some coffee while we're at it? :p

Eugenie, I have no favourite scent, nor a favourite colour nail polish  I know some guys that have pretty strict ideas about that though regarding their girls ;) So I am afraid that won't do as a "girl test" :p. I can not help you on how to dress posh either... I know however that a perfect "comfort book" is all of the the comics on Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Waterspoon. They always make me smile again :D

Sapphire, I totally agree...Calvin and Hobbes gets me laughing in no time, and my stresses melt away..
If I want a lengthier read though, I read a charming and seldom-known novel called 'Charley' by Joan G. Robinson.
It's about a 12 yr old girl who runs away from home, and lives in a hen house in the woods for about 2 weeks!
Which 12 yr old girl hasn't dreamt of running away!!
[of course I would never consider something like that now, nor would I condone it....gosh, I hope there aren't any 12 yr olds reading this thread!!]

I sure couldn't live in a hen house for 2 weeks. Maybe I just need to clean mine out. :)

Ow, that sounds like a wonderful adventure Tournesol :)
I think for books without pictures (:p) I would like to read Terry Pratchett and mostly his books about Discworld. And I can always, always read Truman Capote's "Breakfast at Tiffany's". Always. It kinda blends in my head with the movie though ;)
A hen house... I wouldn't know where to find one

the story 'Charley' is actually set in an English Countryside...of course here in Trinidad, to stay outside at night is suicide - because of the mosquitoes!!!

Well, I got some nasty stings when I was on holiday there... I guess it all depends on the time of year ;) I am pretty sure I would not last long outside when it is freezing or boiling...

You go! I would say they can not disrespect you if you manage to beat them, but I guess they can always find some excuse ... They just feel threatened ;) I bet there are quite a few guys out there who would respect you for it :D Maybe not exactly the moment you beat them though... :p

on the guy thing, i think some women are attracted to bad boys because they see them as a challenge, a conquest if you will. if they get these guys to 'change' for them, that seems to be saying something. it boosts the gals' ego.

04-21-2009, 12:37 PM
hmmm that makes alot of sense...
sapphire... do you think they are jealous when i beat them?
yeah i know that there are a few who do respect me....
the ones who are respectful are true men, if you ask me....
favorite starbucks item? (this is a question for all..." mine is strawberries & cream frappachino

Wow, you're into posting now MasterChief  you know, there is an edit button ;) That way you can add something without making too much posts in a row :)
And as an answer to your question: I guess so. I know that if I am beaten in anything, the moment I am beaten I feel disappointed and wish I was the one to win. I get rid of that feeling pretty soon when it is a not so important match ;) But I guess those guys might jealousy will definitely play a part in it ;) Though I don't think they would be much nicer if you sucked at Halo... not sure what the cause of that would be though... masochism? :p
And favourite StarBucks? We do not really have a StarBucks here, but my favourite coffee is just regular black :D Though I do really enjoy an Irish Coffee every once in a while ;)
@LostPrincess13
Definitely - that will be the attraction for some girls :) I do wonder though - how long will they still want him after they've "changed" him?! Is the change for the better? I guess in some cases...
