When choosing movies, you might have to stoop to our middlebrow, popcorn-chomping level a little, otherwise there's a danger the thread will die simply because we all feel a bit stupid.

I'd never even heard of the last one, and I have a feeling I'll never have heard of this one either.

Satan
03-26-2010, 11:48 AM
Sorry about that. Coming off as some pretentious snob was certainly not on my mind. But I'm sure you have at least heard of this one, for it is based on a well known philosophical novel.

Two more screens:

Sorry about that. Coming off as some pretentious snob was certainly not on my mind.

I don't think that you came over as a pretentious snob. You came over as someone who's just a lot more broadly and deeply informed about film than I am and, if the sheepish silence was anything to go by, than most of the rest of us are. Which is just fine - indeed, admirable.

My point was only that, in terms of this game, a little-known scene from a well-known film is always going to excite more response than a well-known scene from a little-known film.

As to this one - no idea. Er. The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

Point taken. And I wholeheartedly agree with it. It's just that I used to (still do, sometimes) take part in a very similar game at another forum, which, admittedly, is slightly more cinema oriented. I certainly won't be posting shots from Jodorowsky movies here. :alien:

Yes, you were right about Barton Fink. I recommend TULoB, and not only because I admire Binoche and Daniel Day Lewis. There are some differences, but that's expected from a movie adaptation.

Oh yeah. I've always been ready to give up at the first hint of difficulty. There's this big American cultural taboo about quitting. "What are you? A quitter?" But my typically European response to that tends to be, "Well, yeah. No point in failing repeatedly, is there?"

I feel that giving up is a perfectly rational and efficient course in many situations and I recommend it as a useful approach in the portfolio of strategies for dealing with the universe.

Agree. I'm a big fan of the WC Fields approach. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it."

Anyhow, the movie is The White Ribbon. Perhaps Mark should be allowed to post a new scene as a reward for his capitulation.

Yep, sixsmith - though in the UK it was called Pierrepoint. It is of course remembered only by middle-aged Englishmen whose memories stretch all the way back to 2005.
The film premiered at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival[1] and was released in the UK on 7 April 2006.[2] In the United States, it had a limited theatrical release at three screens on 7 June 2007, grossing $21,766. It was released on DVD on 30 October 2007.[3]

Originally commissioned as a television film in 2004,[4] Pierrepoint was not broadcast on ITV until 25 August 2008, when it attracted an estimated audience of 3.6 million.[5]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierrepoint_(film) Regardless of the year it was made, sounds like it was watched only by middle aged British men... Oh, and couple of Australian ones.

I am glad your memory stretches all the way back to 2005, though.

MarkBastable

well yea, but I posted a picture because the previous post guessed it and didn't post a pic.

Possibly the previous poster was not sure that he or she was right - in which case he'd - or, she'd - have been waiting for the person who posted the pic to tell her - or, as it might be, him - that he - or, just as likely, she - had answered correctly, or - equally possibly - incorrectly. (See the erroneous call of The Specialist, below.) People tend to post the next pic at the same time as the answer only when they are totally certain that they've got the previous one right. And you'd have to be pretty confident to do that, because if you were wrong about being right and you posted the next pic in what would be, regrettably but avoidably, error, your name would instantly become a hissing and a byword, you would be considered an unrehabilitatable pariah within the terms of the thread and your stock amongst your LitNet peers would plummet. No one wants to find themselves regarded as plummetting stock, obviously - hence the apparently featureless delays between question, answer, confirmation and subsequent question.

There's a pamphlet available on this subject, that runs for some nineteen closely-formatted pages. I spent ages on it. Send an instant message and five euros to Scheherezade.

Hi Victorianfan,

When you are posting images for this game, it is a good idea to upload the pictures to an image hosting website (with an ambiguous file name). Otherwise anyone quoting you can see the name of the movie. For example, this one is "The Burbs".

Would you like to post anthor image? :)

Hence, I was able to see that the movie was "American Beauty" even though I could not even see the image.
