The Thin Man?
Nope! Sorry papayahed.
It's a well-known 'hard-boiled' detective movie... With all the above clues it shouldn't be too difficult now!
Ok... I give in! Here is another scene from the film.

Quote by Mathor...
This is a relatively easy one.
haha, Mathor...That's easy for you to say. I will have to review the Hitchcock list and figure it out. He had a lot of train scenes in his film. Obviously, this is an early one since it's black and white.
I don't recognise that actor in the forground. He must be a major player, right? Can you give us a hint at least....maybe his first name....?
I bet adwara has it right. I think I was actually thinking of that film, when I posted "Strangers on a Train". If adwara's correct, I love that film!
Mathor
08-07-2009, 04:34 PM
the actor in the picture's name is "Robert"
Janine
08-07-2009, 05:52 PM
the actor in the picture's name is "Robert"
Mathor, It's pesky Janine again! haha....Alright, thanks for that much. Now, is it either Robert Montgomery or Robert Newton? I don't think it looks anything like Robert Cummings, but think he is in one of Hitch's early films, which involved a train or a train wreck. Can't recall the name now. Anyway, is this Robert any of these? If so, you tell me which one? ....I don't ask for much, do I? hahaha
Wild guess - "The Derelicts"....but thought that was an episode on TV and not a film, unless it's a very early film.
Second wild guess: "Saboteur"
Third wild guess is: "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"
This is driving me crazy since I love Hitchcock films!
The 39 Steps, one of Hitchcock's more neglected films. ;)

hahaha....I don't know about that Lynne; I was purely guessing. It seemed to me the film looked a little washed out, so I thought of that movie. I haven't seen it for years. Of course, there has to be tons of other movies with tall ships in them or pirates. Does that guy look like a pirate to you? I wasn't sure.

Yeah I know. It is masterful how Gus van Sant approaches the murders; his camera is so detached and so cruelly indifferent. The way he directs it is van Sant's explanation to the Columbine killings; that there is none, and that violence just happens, and for stupid reasons most of the time.

hahah...I said they were wild guesses! I have no idea what film that is. Is it one of your foreign films or European films? I must admit I am deficient in that realm of film. It's sad, I know. I did however see Blue Velvet back in the day on a large screen. It was great; but I hardly remember a thing about it now. I liked your review very much. Your review on Through a Glass Darkly was also very well written. That film sounds extremely interesting to me. I like films with one on one dialogue and interaction verbally between people. I am not into action films or car chases, etc. I like human relationships best portrayed in films.

Apology accepted...I never win here and was nearly in tears. Anyway, that is the correct title and in the US it was released originally as "Stairway to Heaven"...Powell and Pressburger film - excellent. It is similar to the later "Heaven Can Wait"..I thought that when I was viewing it.

Oh ok...then "If" was the title? Wow, the new one is a riot and also kind of creepy. Are the electric rollers on the guy's head? hahah I say this because I did actually see a old documentary once and a woman would get an electric type perm. I asked my mother about this, since she is 87 and she actually recalled it. Of course, that is no woman and also the guy in the white coat is checking his teeth. I have no idea what film that is. It's the same director as "If..." and the actor in both the photographs recently played that director in a biopic based on a book written by the guy who wrote the screenplays to both movies pictured.
Edit: Actually, I'm not sure the biopic was ever released. But the actor has certainly given filmed lectures about his extensive work with the director.

 Ack. Sorry Janine. I thought i was keeping an eye on this thread and that my post had gone unanswered. But yes you are right. It is a scene from 'That evening sun.' I don't know how i missed your posts. Apologies again.
That ok sixsmith,... eekkk...now I will have to come up with something good, since I won again. I have to tell you that was a stab in the dark for me. I haven't seen the film I don't believe. Now that it took you so long to answer, I guess everyone can be patient for me to get back here with a photo for the next movie. Be back as soon as I find a good one.

ha...I knew I wouldn't trick you, Daniel. Actually, I found the still that way, in b/w. Thought it looked kind of neat. I own a new copy of that movie and need to watch it again soon. It's still in the wrapper and I really like that director's slowpaced and thoughtful films.

Hmmmm, this film was made a while back but couldn't find a proper release since it couldn't secure the music rights, until recently it was re-released and hailed by a great many critics as a masterpiece. (I kept the dates ambiguious so as to shame those who use google :p )
Not much of a hint I suppose.
