SANTA ANA, Calif. _ The marlin fishing was as hot as one might imagine it being during the days of Zane Grey. In fact, it was too hot.

The 2000 Zane Grey/Cabo Yachts Invitational Marlin Tournament was described as some of the best marlin action ever enjoyed in a tournament off Southern California. Actually, it was too good.

During the two-day event, 45 of the top marlin teams in the West hooked 97 marlin, landing 26 and releasing 35 with the five heaviest weighing from 202 to 226 pounds, an International Gamefish Tournament record.
