Altadena's Zane Grey is pictured in 1936 after catching a 1,036- pound tiger shark in Australia, a world record. Well before this, Zane Grey had become rich and famous for his Western stories and had made his home in a large adobe house on Mariposa Street in Altadena. Grey was born in 1872 in Zanesville, Ohio, played professional baseball, then completed his education as a dentist. His wife, known as Dolly, facilitated his writing as editor and financial manager and became founding president of an Altadena bank.
