GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Folks you might not expect to find paying homage to the world's best-known writer of Western novels were mingling with the Western buffs and old-timers here at the annual Zane Grey's West Society convention last weekend.

People like Joe Wheeler, for example. A retired English professor, author and fellow at the Center for the New West in Denver, Mr. Wheeler can accurately be described as an intellectual. But he's also a Zane Grey fan and, as far as he's concerned, that's not a contradiction.
