Perceptive fans of Zane Grey may have noted similarities between Ed Hill's guest column on Mason District Park's dog park and Grey's tales of the Wild West. To hear Hill tell it, there once was a peaceful community of ranchers on the open range who, by virtue of settling there first, believed they held dominion over the land for as far as the eye could see. Then suddenly, into this idyllic setting came a horde of homesteaders and their animals, intent on staking a claim to a parcel of the territory, thus destroying the community, its inhabitants and the great outdoors.
