The first time Zane Grey set foot on Catalina Island, he had yet to find his calling as one of the best-known writers and romanticizers of America's rugged Old West.

But by the time he died in 1939, Grey had become not only one of the islands most famous residents, but was at least partially responsible for what has become one of its most enduring symbols: the herd of bison that continue to roam its vast countryside to this day.
