Approximately 75 years ago, I don't recall the exact year, I witnessed the following event:
When William Wrigley Jr. wished to publicize Catalina Island, where the Chicago Cubs were holding spring training and where there were the best fishing facilities in the world -- like the Tuna Club of which Zane Grey was a charter member -- he then offered $25,000 for a swimming event between Catalina and Long Beach.
My brother, Joseph Murphy, a patent attorney and chemical engineer employed by Shell Oil Company, was participating in this swimming event, along with other swimming events up the coast.
