Most theatergoers are familiar with the myth of Oedipus through Sophocles' Oedipus Rex. But the Roman playwright Seneca's effort, though lacking the poignancy of Sophocles' tale, is also viscerally engaging. Adapted and translated by Ted Hughes, Seneca's Oedipus is a dark, foreboding affair full of bloody images and ominous symbols.
