Background:

What other plays were presented with the Antigone and what prizes it won
are unknown. The story of Antigone's attempt to bury her brother's body in
defiance of Creon's orders is not recorded in extant epic or lyric material.
The earliest known account is in Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes. Other
incidents in Sophocles' Antigone almost certainly his own innovations are the
use of Ismene for character contrast to Antigone, the introduction of
Teiresias to foretell the consequences of Creon's decision, and the presence
of Haemon, ...
