Background:
The date of Sophocles' Electra, as well as Euripides', is uncertain. A
great deal of critical writing has debated which play influenced the other,
but no certain sequence has been proved. Sophocles follows the main lines of
Aeschylus' Choephoroe, with the following changes:
1. The role of Electra is greatly expanded.
2. Orestes' nurse does not appear.
3. Chrysothemis and Paedagogus are added.
4. The scene of recognition and reunion is expanded.
