WHEN the original is just about as good as it gets, you'd better have a very good reason for wanting to improve upon it.
Sophocles' "Antigone," the story of a righteous woman disobeying a government she believes to be deeply wrong, is simple, direct and still packs a wallop. That's pretty amazing considering the play, part of the Oedipus cycle, was written in 441 B.C.
Parisian playwright Jean Anouilh chose to adapt the play while Nazis occupied his beloved city in 1944, so Antigone's rebellion seemed especially powerful.
