546-491 B.C.: Persian rule of Greek cities in Asia Minor. Persian king:
Darius. 490 B.C.: Athenian general, Miltiades, defeats Persians invading
Greek mainland in battle of Marathon. 480-479 B.C.: Athens defeats Persians
in naval battle of Salamis (480 B.C). Persian king: Xerxes. 479 B.C.:
Remaining Persian troops defeated.
Results:
(1) The successful defeats of the Persians made Athens the most powerful
and important city in Greece. (2) Fear of Persians led to Panhellenic unity:
