FRIGID, brittle yet perfectly formed, Hedda Gabler has something of the fjord icicle about her. She is one of those women whom beauty has made hard.

Most men will have been chilled by one in their time: the school or office pinup, aloof yet direct, bossy but bored, born with the power to control yet lacking much soul of their own.

London's latest Hedda Gabler is an actress called Eve Best.

She makes the role so entirely her own that it is hard to know how anyone can ever follow it.
