An Enemy Of The People

Introduction:

Ibsen was motivated to write this play by the universal condemnation of
his previous effort Ghosts by both conservative and liberal forces. Ibsen
maintained an outward calm, and gradually his anger and resentment at the
critics changed into a rather caustic humor. To defend his own position he
wrote An Enemy of the People within one year instead of the usual two. The
play deals with a rather bumbling but well-intentioned reformer, Dr.
Stockmann, who becomes a mouthpiece for some of Ibsen's own ideas.
