Pillars Of Society
Introduction.
Pillars of Society is greatly inferior to Ibsen's later plays, but it
does show the author's concern for social and moral problems. It ranks as the
first and least among Ibsen's social dramas. Written in 1877, it immediately
proved very popular on the Continent, but not until the 1890s and later was
it performed more than a few scattered times in England and America. The plot
of the play follows earlier conventions, for Ibsen devotes more attention to
making the piece logically consistent than to rendering it psychologically
